'Idol' Top 3 'in it to win it'

I don't know about you, but I don't think I need to ever hear that phrase again.

I do believe that this is going to be one of the closest "Idol" Top 3 we have ever had. For the most part, really strong performances from super-talented contestants tonight.

After the final performance, I think HaleyΒ  will be out tomorrow night, but I've been wrong before. Your thoughts?

She's out... and nicely set up by the judges last night. They knew Haley couldnt hit the low notes of Alanis. But what other chick could belt out a Zepplin tune like her??

Two miserably ordinary finalists. A million of those out there already.

I think Haley's going to win because she is a performer. The other people just stand their and sing country music. She is a entertainer.

iYou may be right but i hope not, she is my choice to win. I dont think the song the judges pick for her was a good choice for her voice or style and it showed. After all there talk about picking the right music to each contestant i cant figure out why they chose that for her.

I think this is the WORST top 3 to date on Idol! The best people have already been voted off. Its a popularity contest now, i think scotty is about the worst singer on that stage with ZERO talent. If simon cowell was there half of these singers wouldnt have made it this far....just a joke anymore!

For the most part I can understand every country song that is written and sung, much better than the crap you hear from the Heavy Metal that THINK they have what it takes!

Yep, first James then it'll be Haley. this is my last season for the Idol which is truly for country music lovers and teeen watchers who dial hundreds of times for the best looking. First Adam last year then James and probably now Haley. leaving 2 country singer who only sing country. I hate country music, but love Johnny Cash πŸ™‚ good by idol.

Haley is obnoxious, "Scottie" is repulsive, and Lauren is extremely forgettable, but at least she is cute to look at. What a pitiful collection. James was the only one with any charisma! Doesn't matter who wins this year: they will all be forgotten in a month. The winners: James, James, James and Casey all got voted off by unintelligent American teenagers!
Only reason Scotty/A.E. Neuman is still there is because everyone in his trailer park and the Tractor Supply store voted 1,000 times each! He'll be a good act at the Sa'rdee nite all yuh kin eat bar-bee-que!

Hi Steve- I'm just saying that I think the show can be manipulated by the judges and their comments. I think one vote per contestant would be good but ATT makes money on the texts. I know my opinion is but one among many and it's nice to be able to blog about it. Thanks for acknowledgement Steve, I respect your opinion as well.

      Hey Journalgirl,

You're certainly correct that the judges comments might sway the voters, but that isn't tantamount to the vote being manipulated behind the scenes in some nefarious plot by AT&T and 19 Ent. Neither party stands to gain anything by the better or more popular contestants getting eliminated sooner, or worse yet, getting caught fixing the outcome.

Thanks for the civil discourse, sorry to get preachy!

I have been watching AI for years and this season definitely had the best talent pool in years. While I like Haley, I think her personality is what turns me off the most. You can tell she doesn't mean to come across as bratty but she just is. Both Lauren and Scotty are both so young but they have grown throughout the season. At this point the final show will be great no matter which singer goes home tonight. All three are great entertainers and will have the opportunity to get a record deal if they choose to continue to pursue a music career. I think Lauren has the most potential overall based on her voice and personality.

By what rationale do you conclude that it's rigged? Are you aware that it is in the best interest of the producers for the most popular contestant to get the most exposure? You know they make money from the success of the contestants, right? Perhaps you should consider the possibility that your opinion, while completely valid, is but one among many.

But on the contrary they also air the 700 club with pat robertson telling people that all the natural disaster are the result of a growing gay community. And having said that don't act like I'm just making this up. FOX IS THE MOST CONSERVATIVE NETWORK OF ALL! MORE RIGHT OF RIGHT THAN ANY LEFT OF LEFT NETWORK "LOOK IT UP". There is something about Hayley that irks me. I think she's a good singer. She is definitely worth watching as an entertainer. She too in your face for me. I think she would be a good match for broadway. I think Lauren's voice is excellent. It sounds natural to me. Scotty's voice is amazing, but he gets boring fast.

    May 19, 2011 at 2:23 pm | Report abuse |
  32. Not surprised!

The reason they are so hard on Haley is because the network the show is on is an extremely right wing, conservative network. And rockrs (Haley included) often go against the grain of conservative views. This is also the same reason Sotty and his single octive range get undeserved praises week after week. And Lauren also has been taught (brainwashed from the day she was born) to follow these same conservative views. Hence the uncomfortable feeling saying the word "evil". I love people who are not afraid to think for themselves or outside the box. And Haley definitely Rocks outside the Box of general robots, like Scotty, and Lauren!

      A) FOX - Home of the Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad is conservative??

      B) The top vote getter this season - Has been Scotty. No matter who goes home tonight, Scotty wins thanks to all the girls that think he's "Sooooooooooo cute"

Personally I want Hailey to stay, because she sings better than Lauren and she's more fun to look at πŸ™‚

That's reaching. If politics dictated the judge's comments, they would have heaped a lot of criticism on Adam Lambert.

It's more likely that Haley strikes them as a little disputatious and defiant, and they feel comfortable taking shots at her that would reduce Lauren to tears.

Never thought of it like that but you are Sooo right! Fox has always been that way. they won't push away a cash cow like Home of the Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad, or Glee. Let's all be honest, until the voting on AI is restricted to one vote per number, the results are biased. Also, Randy and Jennifer have consistently criticized Hayley and praised Scotty, Lauren to sway the final two. I wonder how many truly talented individuals, more so than the final three, were turned away at the preliminary auditions to allow air time for the idiots who dress up and sound like crap. To get this far on American Idol has very little to do with talent and much to do with luck.

Haley's gotta stay. She proved the best performer last night. Scotty is the man – great and cute, as for Lauren, she's been wonderful but something just kept her "very safe" last night with the song choices. I wished she would have belted out more powerful notes. I would have to say Scotty and Haley to the finish line, but unfortunately Lauren is proving a little too childish and demonstrating toddler and tiara type of pagentry.

James Durbin was the best of the lot. But Haley was awesome last night. Come on America, She did Zepplin, Fleetwood Mac and Alanis and did them all very well. No one else left could pull off the range that she showed last night. Scotty was good but each one of his songs might as well have been the same song. Lauren was good but had numerous errors. The moment was too big for her. But again, Durbin should've won the whole thing by a landslide. Maybe it's better for him. Now he can sign with which label he wants and for as much as money he can get.

I never watch anything live, so I don't put up with commercials and boring stuff. That said, I listened to all Haley's songs, several of Scott"s, but I don't remember being able to tolerate even one song beyond a few measures, by the other person. I could look on this board and see her name but that would be cheating; there was so little impression I honestly don't recall her name even after so many weeks. Don't get me wrong, seems like a sweet kid with a sweet smile and a sweet voice and a sweet giggle etc, but nothing serious yet. As for Scott, again a really nice kid, though country music isn't my favorite – I just can't get past the weird george bush face he makes all the time. His own face is much nicer, he should keep it.

Haley has them both beat hands down, for talent, grit, performance, and probability of prying money from my hands to buy an album.

I can't watch anything live. I don't watch much of Idol, but I listen. Hard as it is to listen to Haley, I listen. Just because I don't like it, I listen so I can tell you..... It is all subjective. I don't like country, but at least Scotty and Lauren are singing. Haley may be technically correct and talented, but it is lost in the growl. She has her fans and she can make a living, but she won't fill stadiums. Not saying the country kids will, but Haley just isn't what all her die hard fans think she is.

Scotty is just sooo boring and his facial expressions are terrifying. Lauren is just soo fake and usually screws up something in every song but gets lavish praise. Of course, the dumb blonde thing worked for Kellie and Carrie. Haley is far and above the best of this group; not necessarily the best of the top 11. For some reason AI wants a country winner. I agree that country is hot at this time but I'm not sure these two country cuties will do the trick for them.

By the standards sets thus far, Haley, who is by far the best of the three contestants remaining, will go home. All of the best performers are already gone. The semifinals was totally boring and the song choices for all three of them disappointing. Several of the better singers did not even make top 24. The save was used prematurely on Casey (loved him) and it should have been used on Pia (loved her). James had a pretty bad week (loved him) and I think he left prematurely. All three remaining are just not (by far) the best 3 of America. This makes me SURE the votes are not public.

@den mom – Spot on, although sometimes I worry that we're not doing these young artists any favors by throwing them into the reality television meat grinder this early in their careers/lives. Seeing poor little Lauren struggle to maintain her composure up there gets kinda hard. No doubt it's a great opportunity, but at what cost? It is especially hard to read the mean spirited, throwaway comments that anonymous jerks make in forums like this. I am suprised at the way the judges try to sway the vote. Did anyone else notice. Why is it that Scotty and Lauren both were told of the judges pick song in front of a crowd and Haley found out in a car, alone! How about last week when the contestants were doing there video calls home. they only showed a few secs of Haley and went into deep detail of the others. And why did Scottys parents get to tell him how proud they were and the other families were left in the dark?? Things do not seem fair at American Idol this season.

Anastasia is right the songs give to Haley to sing were a lot more dificult than the others. Again the judges are swaying the vote!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Haley is the only one I would vote for. She is the only one with real talent.

The judges have been more critical of Haley, but they've really gone easy on all of them.

Perhaps the producers were protecting Haley from a poor showing in Chicago by shooting her segment In the car.

They did let her bring Dad on stage to perform, (he played quite well actually). That raised her likability factor, a boost she needed after arguing with the judges on several occasions.

Note to future contestants: Study Kellie Pickler's response to all criticism. The endearing thing to do is just smile and apologize. Debating and justifying only makes one look combative and petulant.

Could it be that the judges are doing Hayley a favor by bringing her down a notch so that she can grow into a great star? She won't achieve that without a few public failures - she comes across as narccissistic and willl do much better in the long run IF she looses.

I agree. She's had it out for Haley since the top 10 started. Haley rocked and should win this thing. I like country music but I don't want to listen to either one of them(Scotty or Lauren) on my radio anytime soon!

I totally agree. How can you declare Lauren the winner before hearing Haley sing....especially since YOU picked the song Haley is about to sing. That obviously shows JLo didn't think they picked a good song for Haley. When Simon was around he looked forward to this round to pick a song for the contestants and see how they preformed. JLO is more annoying than Paula ever was and I would like to know why she doesn't like Haley. Steven and Randy both gave her a standing O after the first song, but JLO refused.

      SIMON COME BACK!!!!!!!

Yes agree Anastasia. What JLo said was uncalled for and truly unfair. There is something between the lines that JLo does not like about Haley, and it's not right. JLo should be keeping her own judgemental personal reasons to herself. I sure wish that she was judging differently.

If you get a chance to hear JLo sing live, you'll know what her beef is with Haley. She's a gifted dancer, and an accomplished actress, but she should let her hubby do the singing in the family. Haley's somewhat closed off demeanor probably made JLo think that Haley knows she's the better singer of the two.

    • Steve

@Joe – Haley's style may not appeal to you, but are incorrect in your assertion that she is less talented than the other two is biased by your taste. Talent is a measure of potential, so we can't yet be sure how much of if any of these youngsters have. As far as their current skill level goes, Haley has more power and contol with Lauren in 2nd place. When it comes to market appeal, Scotty's low-end note scooping is idiomatically on the money. He needs to develop his high end and stabilize the long notes, but he would be the easiest of the three to write songs for and market.

Scotty does the male country thing as well as some successful recording artists. The problem is that, from the standpoint of vocal execution, artists like Kenny Chesney have lowered the bar; they perform well and do catchy songs, but scoop all their notes and seldom hold out any long notes. He'll do well in country, but can't handle songs like "She Believes in Me" that require 1/4 notes and longer at mid-tempos.

Lauren has potential but is still quite immature, vocally and emotionally. That's okay for female country artists who write their own stuff (e.g. Taylor Swift and Miranda Lambert). But for the most part, the female country scene is historically dominated by more mature artists (think L. Womack, T. Yearwood, F. Hill). This is because most female Nashville tunes are considerably more demanding than their male counterparts. Carrie Underwood was ready,... Lauren is not.

Haley has significantly more control and power than the other two, but is also stylized to the point of affectation. This is why she us such a polarizing contestant. Those who say she "can't sing" are mistaking their (completely valid) personal taste for an objective assessment of her ability. I agree that she falls back on the growl too often, but the same criticism could be made of James' high notes.

It's anybody's guess who will win. Post-AI, Scotty has the most clear-cut path to a recording career. With the right guidance Lauren could do well. Despite superior fechnical ability, Haley may be the trickiest to find a sweet spot for. With a voice like hers, she ought to play an instrument and write her own tunes. She's attractive but doesn't move well enough to present pop like the women she seems to admire. Perhaps fronting a rock band like Grace Potter and the Noctournals would be the best route for her, but AI seems to churn out "solo" artists more readily.

I love Lauren! She's someone that'll just get better as her voice improves. Haley, I want to like because I'm from a neighboring town, but I get frustrated with her song choices. I love scotty, but the only reason why he's still on is because he is being cheered on by a bunch of 14 yr old girls... I just feel that he's not an American Idol.

If Lauren is so great why has she ducked the power notes on every song she sings. Her performance of the Righteous Brothers fell completely flat...even Jimmy remarked about it. She does not have either the vocal range or confidence to go for the sustained high notes.

Scotty's lame version made me appreciate Kenny Rogers talent even more (before the facelift, of course), the others were passable karaoke. Haley notched another "moment" with most inspired song pick of the night w/Zep & 3 song difficulty level. Judges still seem to have it out for her with wrong pick of Alanis song & Jimmy picking Rhianian is questionable too – both too identified w/artist & not really vocal showcase songs – however, more known songs. Lauren had 3 pretty solid song choices & soaring vocals. Girls in the finale & more versitle singers. Haley picks up James vote & country split sends Scotty home......pleez

No, Don't expect an all-girl finale. Fantasia/DeGarmo was the only female final, in season three.

I thought Haley's choice was brilliant and so was Jimmy Iovine's choice although I would have picked a different song I think she did Rhiannon well and always thought Haley could/should do a Stevie Nicks/Fleetwood Mac song. The judges pushed Haley (which I think was unfair) with the Alanis Morissette song. They didn't push Lauren or Scotty both did predictable songs (all country)

I haven't seen tonights performances yet but someone's gotta defend Haley! She's is way better than the other two and I don't mean to demean the other two because they're really good too. But her performance of "I who have nothing" was one of the best performances of the season. For me only James and Haley have had performances where I've wanted to watch them back again. Both of them have had a couple of bad ones, Haley's "Earth Song" being possibly her worst. But it should've been a Haley/James Finale. If Haley's not in the Finale it will be very boring I predict.

I will defend Haley. Imagine being at a concert, Haley Brings it ALL to the stage. Think of the standing ovations, House of the Rising Sun, I who have Nothing, and the Led Zeppelin performance tonight. Lauren has a truly amazing voice, but Haley delivers chills the the spine. Think how much she has grown this season. She is a professional, she is an Artist, and She is an entertainer. Sorry Lauren, your time will come, It's Haley's time. And her time is right now!

I agree Haley is by far the best one left on the show... It should have been a Haley/James finale that would have been awesome. If Haley goes home I WONT be watching the finale which will be as boring as Scotty and Lauren are. They have done nothing special all season. yeah they have great voices, but Haley ROCKS! I just love her. If Haley goes home tonight then that's the end of Idol for me (forever)... After the season 8 debacle I didn't watch season 9 and only came back to watch this season because of the new "judges" even though I miss Simon. I think he was the most honest judge they've ever had whether I agreed with him or not he was still honest. Steven and Jennifer love almost everyone except Jennifer is jealous of Haley. Randy is o.k., but I still miss Simon can't wait for XFACTOR!

Scotty was all over it tonight!!!! The Guy is a natural. We will be listening to Scotty's music for a long time.
Sorry to say I cant see that happening for Haley. The growling and raspy voice is starting to wear on my nerves.

Scotty is a one-trick pony. He was boring after the first week.
Haley continues to grow and surprise. She will go far no matter what. Scotty and Lauren will fade away.

Let me start out by saying I really like country music but I dont get the love for Scotty, particularly from the judges. I honestly think 2 of his 3 songs sucked. I miss Simon's honesty instead of this false praise. Haley was the best by far in my book.

Blue, I miss Simon, too. When a performer sings half a song out of key and gets praise from the judges????. Come on.

Sorry but I am just not into growling and rasping into the microphone – Haley please go home. All 3 will most likely get recording contracts regardless of who wins but Lauren needs that career guidance that only the Idol producers can provide a 16 year old talented young girl. She has sooooo much potential and got all of my votes tonight. Scotty will get picked up before next week is out – he does not need to win Idol and Haley should become the lead singer of the Casey Abrams Band. Please VOTE FOR LAUREN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Could not agree more. The growl is forced and over done. I think she has talent and can sing; however, more times than not she over sings. I liked her Led Zepplen and think it was a risky move that helped her out. All three will have good futures from here. I voted for Lauren several times. I fear being able to get in and vote that many times might mean bad news for Lauren tonight!

You people need to clean out your ears. Haley was the best by far. She is much more mature and I imagine she will get some of the voters who had been voting for James. I do not see those voters voting for one of the Hee Haw contestants. Lauren was horrible tonight and you can tell that Randy and Jennifer were giving her false praise. We see how well that worked for James. You also have to realize that the country vote is being split between Scotty and Lauren. I am sure Haley is one of the final 2. Lauren needs to pack her bags.

Totally agree. Hayley is brilliant, creative, and just a special special talent. I know she won't win because of all the "country" love ... but if it were my pick ... Hayley would win AI.

Scotty certainly has a voice ... as does Lauren ... but they're a lot more boring.

really jason? haley is the best? are you def? she might have moments but its too few to have her staying there. at best haley is a karaoke singer. james, kc, jacob and pia is far more talented than her. if you cant see that then you must be in denial terribly.

Yaaay Sylvia.........Scotty has been my favorite from day 1 – it's time for a good old country boy to have a chance – I respected James for his courage and probably, if the background and challenges were counted and not so much emphasis on singing, he would be a real American Idol. He's had a lot to overcome – and did it remarkably – but Scotty? Down with screaming rock!!! and that includes YOU Steven!

So what was up with Haley having her Dad up there with her....and the wind machine? Didn't see anything like that for Scotty or Lauren.....I think she's going home tonight. She was good on the first 2 songs, but even the judges said she was "good on the chorus" on the last one......the chorus does not make the song. She just has too much "tude" for me...

@Eileen – Haley got tongue-tied in the first pre-chorus of "You Oughta Know". The verses were too low for her. Since the choruses were not at the top of her range, I don't know why she didn't take it up a 1/2 step. Odds are the guitarists pushed for a guitar-friendly key, and she caved. Regardless, she still executed better all evening than the other two, even maintaning her composure after taking a header on her first tune.

Letting her dad play and giving her a little breeze hardly makes up for the way Randy and Paula have beaten up on her for weeks.

I'll agree that she needs to work on her interview skills; she comes across cold and detached at times. Just remember that what you perceive to be "tude" may be nervousness, though.
