'House' renewed for season 8

After months of negotiations, Fox officially announced today that "House," one of its longest-running, most popular series, will return for an eighth season in the fall.

“Over the past seven seasons, 'House' has redefined the medical drama and has given us one of television’s most compelling and iconic characters,” said Kevin Reilly, president of entertainment at the network.

So what was the delay in the renewal, after lower-rated series like "Fringe," "Raising Hope" and "American Dad" were all picked up earlier this season?

"House" co-star Lisa Edelstein explained the situation back in February: "There's a whole complicated structure of that in terms of who pays for what when you make a show. Now that the show’s been on for so long, I think NBC [who produces the show] wants Fox to take over the cost of production and Fox doesn't want to take that over, so there's just been some dispute there."

The negotiations went on so long that cast member Robert Sean Leonard even openly spoke about possibly walking away from the show. (Leonard and Omar Epps recently signed on for the new season, Deadline reported last night. Olivia Wilde and Edelstein are both expected to return, as well as the rest of the cast.)

Negotiations like this aren't unusual for long-running hit series. For example, ABC has yet to announce the renewal of "Desperate Housewives" for an eighth season, and Fox only last week renewed "Bones" for a seventh season.

Hugh Laurie reportedly earns $400,000 per episode, which would make him the highest paid drama series actor on TV.

Are you happy to see more of "House?" Do you think it should continue to season 8 and beyond? Share your view below.

I really like the show. It isn't quite as good as it was at first but I still look forward to each episode. I am kind of surprised about the major changes in the cast. What happened to everybody?

I'm glad they're making an 8th season, the ending to the 7th season was awful, I couldn't stand not having a show after that kind of an episode. It was crazy, in a good House kinda way.

Im stoked for House to come back on for Season 8 they deserve to go beyond 8 if they so choose. This franchise is amazing it makes you think, laugh, sit on the edge of your sit, and at times hit House. PEOPLE they made House like that for a reason he's the guy you hate to love, and love to hate. And what makes him not so likeable is the fact that he does what none of us can come to do... Tell everybody how we really feel no matter how he's looked at, and that I admire. So either if you love or hate him or just like to watch the medical cases House is a real nail biter, sittin at your sit, riot of entertainment.

House MD is one of not so many exceptional drama series in every way. It features great acting and deals with deep questions on how society works and the choices people make on every episode. It is not superficial, or violent. It is a show about an exceptional person trying to fit in, in our far from perfect society. It is about a rebel, a person with integrity and principle. Simply a thinking person's show. Wish there were more honest shows like House MD on TV.

How can people comment on this and say House is boring when now they are talking about season 8! Surely by now if you didn't like the way House was working and his amazing mind, you would have stopped watching around season 3!

House is a brilliant show I have only been watching it since February this year and already I am up to Season 5 episode 17, I am amazed by the show and I love it, I've had a sneak peak at season 7 when I was flicking through the channels and came to Sky 1. I'm proud to say I can not wait to get up to season 7 and then finding out there is now a season 8 is just mind blowing to me because I have been addicted to House I must admit.

I personally am hoping for at least 2 more seasons of House. (I don't think shows should be past 10. That's just too much.) I have been watching this show since season 1, and I have enjoyed it immensely. I will say that it can get a bit boring and monotonous at times. I hated the House and Cuddy relationship. Boring. I watch House for the self-destrictivness. Happy House is a huge yawn. (With the exception of his happiness in the Wilson relationship of course!) But as whole, I believe that the writers are doing a great job considering they are now about to go into 8 seasons. The character development is still happening, the relationships are still interesting, the drug addicted House is still fun to watch, and there are still interesting plot twists. It is one of the few things that make my Mondays bearable! The thought of not having a new House episode to look forward to after having it for the past 7 years is kind of sad.

I agree completely, and I've been saying that for years. House dying would be the perfect ending. (Which is how Doyle should have left Sherlock Holmes and not have tried to please his readers.) House should be killed by his obsession, just like Holmes and Moriarty. Just saying.

They need to come up with a cunning plan to change this series up. Its getting stale. I agree that House's epiphanies are getting old. Did you ever notcie that the character Brenda Leigh Johnson on "The Closer" does the same thing? She gets this far away look in her eyes and "bing!" the case is solved !!

Why is it House is the only one who can cure anything? Hes arrogant/rude/egotistical/addicted. He treats all the other Drs like their idiots. And he always has to take credit for everything. The plots have become so unbelievable that we might as well be watching a fairy tale. Noone ever dies. And every disease is some exotic thing that noone has ever heard of. He neefs to lose a patient every now and then. Hes not some miracle worker, just a regular Dr. Add something new and soon before you lose your viewer

What are you talking about? First of all House isn't the only one who cures diseases, and he isn't a miracle worker. If you watch the show then you should know that patients die on this show quite frequently. Plus every disease isn't some kind of exotic thing. Sometimes the diagnosis is something simple that the House merely missed. In addition to that, you need strange cases to make the show interesting.

House is one of the better shows FOX has to offer, but Hugh Laurie making $400,00 an episode? Its not that good. No wonder NBC doesnt want to p/u the costs any more. They definately need to do something new on the show. Same old plots, just different disease names. That got tiresome after the first cuople of shows, let alone 7 yrs of the same ole, same ole. Change it up some! Were getting bored already!

I think it ran out of steam a few years back. They should at least make the series believable! Watching him tell a couple of the others, who are doctors, to go and bust into someone's house to check and see what is there is so stupid and idiotic! Anybody that believes that goes on in real life needs to go and read some fairy tales and then read where it says they are make believe! One other thing that is so stupid it makes one wonder how it is still on the air. Maybe it stays on because of Lisa or Olivia? When someone comes into the hospital with a problem they immediately go into guessing what is wrong with the person! They keep guessing and pumping or testing this person till he or she either dies or is healed! It's stupid. It's worse that CSI and getting results within 30 mins and solving the case within 24hrs! This show is truly a non-reality show! The diseases they come up with are amazing also. I think they must sit down and read through all the medical fantastic story articles! They have come up with cases that happen once in 100 million people. Nobody is in their hospital for something as common as a broken bone that has problems or a person with the flu that has problems afterwards! However, the biggest problem is "House" himself. Here is a guy who is a total a.r.s.e and has the personality of a bada.r.s.e. skunk. He has no bedside manners. He insults everybody. He has no respect for anybody, but believe everybody should respect and honor him! He goes around in front of everybody in the hospital eating Vicoden as if it were candy! The hospital wouldn't have him there if he did that. He is a Vicoden addict. They act as if that isn't anything important. He eat this and never drink water to wash it down, etc. He might be eating about 15 tabs a day, which amounts to 75mg of oxycodone and 7500mg of acetoaminophen. The 75mg is nothing. The problem is all the acetoaminophen. He would by now have had kidney failure and severe liver damage! They should have at least put him on oxycontin if they were going to have him be an addict with a habit. The writers have really screwed up along with the medical experts they have when it comes to making this guy look like a dope addict. Like CSI, CSI NY,CSI Miami and House they should at least make them believable. We aren't fools. I would never go to a hospital that had some freak like House walking around. Even if I couldn't walk I would at least crawl out of that place and go somewhere that has certified doctors who knew what they were doing and weren't guessing. Sorry for the length, but that stuff burns me up! What happened to quality and pride in one's work!

The unrealistic thing on the show is a doctor who spends time on diagnosis. In the real world, if it looks like the flu, it's the flu. If the patient doesn't respond to treatment for the flu, they are lazy, fat, and not cooperating, but the doctor may be willing to lower himself and stand in the room while the patient complains, again. Why waste time on difficult diagnosis when there are so many easy cases to fix and bill?

You're honestly getting that upset about a TV show? Because that's all it is. It is a fictional storyline. We didn't watch E.R. for the unrealistic medicine, we watched to see George Clooney; just as we watch House for the great cast and witty script. If you want reality TV, go watch Keeping Up With the Kardashians.

I just want to point out that it's a made up television show! If it were completely true to life it would be boring. If House were a super nice doctor like you expect doctors to be he would also be boring. Almost every (non-reality) tv show you has some sort of over-exaggerated, make believe, would never happen that way in real life part somewhere in the story line, and even many reality shows are scripted and planned out in one way or another.
As for your rant about the diseases they have people get on the show, of course they find really weird diseases for people, if it were something common then any doctor in a walk-in clinic could diagnose it, there would be no reason to go to a diagnostician. The whole point of the diagnostics department is because no one else could figure out what was wrong.

They have mixed up the formula some this season. Originally, it was supposed to be CSI where the culprit was an illness, not a person...but then they thought, "What if Sherlock Holmes was a doctor and even funnier?" It is hard when facing 150 episodes to stay original...but y'know they may be able to. CSI has spawned how many years of shows?

You guys are missing the whole concept behind the show, first off, it is a great show. I think Huge Laurie is a great actor, he pulls the character off very well. Dr. Gregory House is an interesting character study. He is often misjudged, everybody thinks he could care less about his patients but throughout the seasons we see a softer side of his character shine through. He finds pleasure in solving medical cases, and he obsesses over his patients, he does what he has to do, whatever it takes. That, in itself, is admirable. His character has progessed throughout the seasons. He's realisitc, he doesn't care what people think of him, he's actually a loveable character at times. He has alot of great qualities about him, and some, not so great. That's what makes an interesting and facisinating character. I hope they get at least 2 more seasons out of Huge Laurie. As for his $400,000.00 every episode, I say he deserves it.
