Cameron Diaz: Marriage doesn't 'suit our world'

Cameron Diaz is definitely a catch, but don’t try to marry her: the 38-year-old actress tells Maxim magazine that she indeed finds marriage to be a “dying institution.”

“I think we have to make our own rules,” she says. “I don’t think we should live our lives in relationships based off of old traditions that don’t suit our world any longer.”

This isn’t to say she’s against relationships, though. Things with her reported baseball-playing beau Alex Rodriguez are “awesome,” she says, and even offers a little relationship advice.

“I love men more than anything. I want all men to be happy and have rad women in their lives,” Diaz says. “But guys need women who challenge them and don’t let them get away with their s-. Women, conversely, need to not be crazy b-– who blow up when their guys tell them something that scares them.”

Duly noted, Diaz. Her next film "Bad Teacher," co-starring her former boyfriend Justin Timberlake, opens on June 24.

Of course she has to say this. She knows she is with someone that will not be faithful to her and any marriage with him would fail. And thats all the types of guys she picks. A bit arrogant to say marriage doesn't suit our world. You mean marriage does not suit YOUR world, is what she should of said. Then at least that would be honest, rather than speaking for the whole world. But I guess celebs like this are off in their own world. Role models right? I forgot we are supposed to look up to these people. Only good people have alot of money....

  3. a person

Marriage is a journey, not a destination. Getting married does not require therefore that you be perfect, or never make mistakes, or never falter or stray from your stated goals (the oaths of a given marriage), but rather that you be committed to "getting back on the horse" again and again as you pursue the benefits marriage has to offer.

Because marriage is not merely about the societal factors that sometimes get mentioned – stability, family, etc – but also personal growth. I think it is through the many trials of marriage that we suffer and, because of a desire and commitment to care for another person, we become more enlightened as we become more altruistic.

Altruism, true, love for another person, is something which is not natural in life. But because of our capacity to grow and change ourselves – unique upon the earth – it is a human birthright to choose a path which can teach your mind what true love and true giving is – if you so desire.

It is my belief that the best and most natural way of setting oneself on this path (again if one so desires) is through marriage. Where else can one put another's best interests first (truly)? Where else can one experience such incredible pain when another experiences pain, and learn what it means to want happiness and peace for another more than for oneself (truly)? Until you have stood by a person through their darkest hours (such as the loss of their parents), their greatest joys (such as the birth of a child you created together), seen the impact of your own choices on the long-term well-being of another, and crossed the mental line where your desires are distinct from theirs, then you cannot know true love and dedication.

Love is not about passion, or being "in love", or honesty, or faith, or partnership. Love is taking care of another life. Through this path of enlightenment you can achieve transcendence: transcendence beyond your personal thoughts, transcendence beyond your own petty needs, indeed transcendence beyond you as an individual.

This is the great reward: to achieve a new consciousness. Could you be Ghandi, or Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa, by birth? Perhaps some are so lucky, but a state of pure love is available not just for the gifted few, but for all of us, if we wish it, if we commit to it, if we fight for it, if even after failing we choose not to despair but to struggle and to increase our commitment (not decrease it).

To all of you here today I say, marriage is more needed now than ever in the history of man. It is precisely because our callous disregard for others is so prevalent and so great that we need some amongst us to work to obtain a measure of transcendental love and altruistic thinking, especially in our leaders and role models. Perhaps marriage may not seem useful in a life of hedonism, selfishness, and adventure. But you must ask yourself if that is how you truly wish to spend your One Life on this Earth.

If you aren't ready today, or haven't found the right person, or are afraid, best wishes to you. But heed the thoughts that are now in your mind and you can also begin your journey towards enlightenment on earth through love.

How can anyone with a brain take this twit seriously? She and her Hollywood ilk make a mockery of marriage and relationships. Marriage doesn't suit the times? No it doesn't if you are about bed hopping like an Olympic athlete. These sad narcissistic morally void tramps cannot offer anything to a relationship but a fairly young over used body that in a shorter time than they will admit will be shapeless and wrinkled. That is what they fear. They know they have nothing substantial to offer in a marriage in terms of selflessness, honor, loyalty and giving. After all, that is what it takes to make a marriage from both partners. Men will take what they want from her and sooner than she thinks no one but the older has beens and the younger users will even want to be seen with her. A sad case.

I'm a woman in her mid-20's. I hated the idea of marriage. Then I discovered my husband. Not only am I married but I have a newborn. I married him not for money, even though he makes more money that me (but he's also older and has been in the workforce way longer). I married him because I love him and because we both knew we were the only people in the world we wanted to be with–especially since, I'm tooting my own horn, we're both hot, we have hot passion, but we also love being around each other when passion isn't available...So I disagree, on that aspect. Money is a driving factor. I know women who are poor and have never been married because they didn't want to be. And they weren't ugly, they just turned down marriage proposals...

If I'm a celebrity I'm not gettin married until I feel my career is over.

So we end marriage and all start dying faster – that's sounds great! http://www.psychpage.com/family/library/brwaitgalligher.html The benefits of marriage – done right – make it ridiculous to make the statement she made.

I hope no one reads this and has their views on marriage influenced by Cameron Diaz. She has a right to her opinion, but has no credentials that make her opinion matter on this topic. She began modeling as a teenager and has been in the entertainment industry ever since. In other words: not the kind of person whose views on life I would care about or take to heart.
Excuse me whilst I step on my pedestal for a moment:
I am married and believe that marriage and family are essential to a stable society, and that the most ideal and responsible situation in which to raise children is in a home with a mom and dad that love them, and each other.
Marriage is hard work, and is not so much about being "in love" with someone else as it is about acting the part. If both parties' goal is to love, serve, and care for one another, then marriage isn't some "old tradition that is not suited for our world", it is the perfect recipe for peace and happiness in a world that always seems to be chasing it.

    May 5, 2011 at 9:32 pm | Report abuse |
    • LillyoV

Yeah – a world where people are trying to be happy, but constantly think of themselves. It's a trick of the mind to tell you to do what YOU want whenever YOU want and you'll be happy – and sadly many of us fall for it and end up with regrets that we try not to think about. A good marriage is better for your health than being single. A good marriage requires that you actually think more about the welfare of someone else (spouse, kids) more than yourself. If it's done right by two people, it is one of the most rewarding things for the mind and body that exists on the planet. Sorry – but it's never wise to knock something when you haven't REALLY tried it.

Cameron is right. Humans are polygamous animals (just like 97% of the animal kingdom). However, we keep trying to hammer the round monogamous peg into the square hole set by nature. I know, I know.... how dare I bring up the obvious! Look at our divorce rate, our infidelity rate, and our single household numbers. I predict in 1,000 years or so, marriage will be looked at as a failed societal experiment. Just my thoughts!

What world is she from? Just cause it doesn't work for her doesn't mean it doesn't work. Maybe she just isn't the kind of girl a guy would want to take home to Mama. When your track record is that you've probably slept with every guy in Hollywierd what's left. One day she'll find herself too old to get laid and wish she would have been a little less provocative. Oh and nasty....

This is because she is fornicating her brains out and is psychologically trying validate it to the public as a new norm lifestyle. Cuz she's given up on a traditional one. Don't give it up on the first night Cameron.

Yet even more so; validate it against her own personal standards from growing up. In other Words.....(DENIAL – The Nile) ain't just a river in Egypt.

Readings all the negative comments, I realize there is a double standard, George Clooney has the same impression on marriage but everyone celebrates his "Eternal Bachelor Status". I'm sure she knows what is best for her. She looks she's happy and having fun.

George was married at least. Her saying that men need a challenge is very sophmoric. Using words like challenging and crazy b– shows she really has no idea what she is talking about. She either dates players or men 10 years+ younger than her. What does she expect.

Not wanting to get married is one thing. Her reasons are silly.

Good point, although I think many people is George Clooney as a rather sad character. Charming, handsome, yes, but also quite rudderless.

FACT: DO NOT BE MISLEAD, THIS KIND OF TALK SPOIL GOOD HABITS.
THE BIBLE SAYS IN THE "LAST DAYS" PEOPLE ARE CAPTIVE TO VARIOUS
UNCLEAN HABITS, THIS PERSON NEEDS TO TELL YOUNG GIRLS ABOUT
S T D – I SAY THESE THINGS, NOT TO DISCOURAGE YOU, BUT TO ADMONISH YOU
AS BELOVED CHILDREN....EVERY IMORAL PERSON HAS "STD". BUT THEY SAY
NOTHING ABOUT IT, THEY JUST GIVE ADVICE TO DECEIVE YOU, THEIR THINKING
IS NOT GODLY BUT IS FROM THEIR FATHER THE "DEVIL".

Sky...Sweetheart. Not ever immoral person has a STD. Anyone could get an STD. You could be married and someone cheats and brings their partner infects their partner with an STD. Is it their partners fault? You are right, in the last days we will see immoral things and silly comments made by refurbished blonde such as Cameron Diaz. But a little advice for you...before you start spitting on the word of God, you better make sure you ain't wagging your finger.

Funny how you only "admonish" young girls to be chaste. I guess it's ok for the boys to be boys... but god forbid women have similar freedom... I bet you think STD's only affect gays and girls.

i just think that if you love someone theyre worth everything, and if a *dumb piece of paper* or *outdated rule* makes that love stronger or makes us happy then theyre worth it, warts n all..a sentiment that clashes with a largely *disposable* culture..

Yes, but George was married at least. Her saying that men need a challenge is very sophmoric. A good real marriage is based on friendship and teamwork. Using words like challenging and crazy b– shows she really has no idea what she is talking about. She either dates players or men 10 years+ younger than her. What does she expect.

Totally agree. Espeically telling is how many of said commenters seem to be middle-aged women. Envy maybe? She gave the best advice I've read in a magazine about relationships. Guys DO need a woman to call them out, but I'd also give almost anything for a woman that doesn't go psycho the moment she hears something she didn't want to.

She always dates players look at the player she is dating now! Who hasn't A-Rod slept with? He goes from one hollywood starlet to another you would think they would learn! You get what you get when you date a guy like that. She will get married one of these days.
