'Beastly' star Alex Pettyfer: L.A. is disgusting

Brit actor Alex Pettyfer may have ended his Hollywood career before it began. In an explosive new interview with VMAN, the "Beastly" and "I Am Number Four" star trashes the West coast and gets in a few digs at women as well.

Pettyfer, who reportedly dated "Glee" star Dianna Agron, gloats to the magazine that he got a "Thank you" tattoo just above his crotch "in case I forget to say it."

The actor went on to say that he hates red-carpet galas, explaining, "I really don't give a s-– about any of that. I wish I had some interesting stories about living in L.A., but mostly I just do my work and then go home."

And speaking of L.A., Pettyfer is hardly a fan.

"L.A. is growing on me a little bit but it's still a s-hole," he tells the magazine. "I think it's this insidious pool where nearly everyone lives in fear. Geographically it's fantastic, but socially it's disgusting."

While it remains to be seen how Hollywood will react to his interview, Pettyfer apparently wouldn't mind if his career ended tomorrow.

"Being an actor is like being in prison," he says. "You go, you serve your time, you try and replicate Johnny Depp's career and then you move to Paris."

I think he's another typical B-list actor who's trying to up his cred by making smartass comments. He's not doing it in a very deft way (hating on L.A. hating on acting, hating on everything), so I doubt it's going to work. He sounds a bit desperate to get attention this way, so I think he's going to be a self-fulfilling prophecy.
File his remarks and his relevance under the heading of "Who Cares?".

LA the city itself is gross... I am from S.California, and i tell you unless you live outside LA ( the county and the city) its ghetto.... and the glitz and glam... not there..ok maybe in Beverly Hills and Hollywood, but thats behind the gates than common people are not allowed past...He is right.. and perceptive being from outside LA..Most people who i know who come from out of the county go with dreams and live behind a sheer curtain not realizing they are drowning in the wonderful city of angels!

I live in LA too, and I think his assesment of the social scene is pretty acurate- HOWEVER, what an ungrateful stooge he is for speaking so arrogantly and down to the very thing that pays his bills. Poor inconvenienced actor- "Acting is like being in prison, boo hoo". He should be so lucky to be acting for millions of dollars and not stocking shelves at Ralph's with the rest of his faceless toolbag colleagues. What a dolt.

  8. Hollywood High

Unfortunately, I tend to agree with this guy... my home town of Hollywood HAS turned into a septic tank of people that would cut a throat for a spot in a Burger King commercial these days. In that aspect, it is appalling to me, but as a native of Hollywood (Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital 1954) I remember a kinder, gentler neighborhood growing up. Selma Avenue School is right behind where the Fredericks of Hollywood warehouse used to be. People today complain about the air quality in LA, and I break out in belly laughs. There were days when the students weren't allowed to play outdoors because the air was so bad! Walking home from school down Hollywood Boulevard to Whitley I couldn't take a deep breath, and crossing the street in front of J.J, Newberrys you could hardly see across the street at the Hollywood Market!!!
Being up on the top of Whitley Terrace looking towards downtown, you might be able to see the top of City Hall sticking up through a thick BLACK BAND covering downtown.
You can understand why today I guffaw at folks complaining about smog... compared to the late 50's and early 60's, there AIN'T no more smog here.
Summer nights here are especially beautiful. Back then we used to leave the front and back doors open for the breeze with just a screen door and a cheap latch... but today, the same house on the hill has heavy security doors and thick bars on the windows, a sad testament to the people who have invaded the old idyllic community.
Things went REALLY downhill in Los Angeles when a former Mayor, Tom Bradley, declared LA a refugee city, causing most of Latin America to dump their human dregs into the city. Crime skyrocketed, the murder rate quintupled, and a great place to live was transformed into the cesspool it is today. Even my old High School today looks like a concentration camp.
I bailed out over the hill into the Valley to escape that mess in the '80s, and even here it's turning to crap.
PLEASE, by all means, if you leave LA, take a few dirtbags with you and help clean up LA!

I lived in L.A. for 10 years too long working in television behind the scenes. Totally agree with him. Great place to visit. Terrible place to have a semi-normal, decent life. Lonely and anonymous in a sea of 10 million people – Unless you're rich – then it's probably an entirely different experience.

Like any big city, L.A. is what you make of it. In a city that big, you can meet any kind of person you want. I was raised in Chicago & lived in L.A. for 20 years. I worked in the film business. I have met some really great (kind, honest, intelligent & generous) people who were born & raised in L.A. If you meet unethical, arrogant, self-centered people in L.A., say "good-bye" to them and move on to people who you do like and share common values.

FYI: Much of the bad behavior in L.A. comes from people who are not from L.A. They come from other parts of the nation & world and behave poorly because they have no family members in L.A. to keep their poor behavior in check. They act like idiots for 2 years and then go back to the uptight, repressive place where they grew up. Then they start behaving themselves again because they have to answer to their family there.

L.A. has great restaurants, awesome live music and beautiful weather & beaches. Gorgeous women too.
But the traffic is annoying as hell.

This English actor is just making noise to get himself publicity. Apparently it worked.

American English differs quite a bit from British English. Although the words are the same, the meanings are different. For example: He's mad! Here he's angry, there, he's crazy. Another- I'm humble. Here, I'm meek, there, I'm poor or of meager means. Ok... LA's disgusting... Here, LA is gross, terrible. There, it frustrates me. So Alex is actually more frustrated with the LA scene than he's calling it a terrible place. He did say it's great geographically, and who can argue this? LA is one of the most beautiful cities in the USA!!!

He's being honest. No need to trash him for it. I absolutely love LA... Geographically- just like Pettyfer, he did mention this, but the way. Socially, LA is another world, just like South Florida is in it's own self-absorbed little world of tanned, well dressed people driving expensive cars under the tall palms and acting as plastic as can be.

i think he's totally hot and i love this brash honestly... however, i completely disagree with his assessment of LA. the entire california coast is the most beautiful visual scenery you can get in the world. LA is full of driven, ambitious and beautiful people who will do whatEVER it takes to get to the top. it breathes old hollywood glamour, houses the top restaurants in the country and is full of world culture. if you can't take the heat of the industry kid, perhaps you should quit acting and move to a small southern town or to the midwest. hey, i'm just speaking the *truth* too.

I live in LA and I love it. It's so pretty here...Griffith Park, the ocean, the creative people, the sunshine, the flowers that are blooming right about now, the jasmine in the night air, the delicious Mexican food, the great underground film theatres, the yoga, the farmers markets and healthy food, the music scene, even the darkness and shallowness of Hollywood and the film industry has an allure of its own. It's not the easiest or most forgiving place to live in, but if you expand your life beyond the red carpet and who is on or off it, this place has a lot to offer. I've been super jaded about LA before because yes, sometimes it feels like people judge you on who you know/where your career is at etc. But all you need to do is figure out who your real friends are and who they aren't (some people are business associates, not friends...people often confuse the two in this town) and move on. Every city has its positives and negatives, and I've lived in a few of the greatest cities in the world...LA is a treasure.

LA is the best city in the USA. If you dont like it move out. Move to Ohio or Iowa and enjoy. If you associate with good people and have a strong network, LA is the best place on earth. Most of these folks may have a little sucess in entertainment but no true friends or real love in their lives. And yes we like to look good in LA, we like to have fun in the sun in LA, and yes we can be a little superficial at times FYI.

I grew up in Los Angeles and I love it and I wouldn't live anywhere else. People who don't like it here, us natives would love nothing more than for you to LEAVE. I don't live in fear because I'm not a moron. Don't like it in this beautiful , interesting, diverse city with the best weather in the world, THEN GET OUT. Live in fear? Why? Do you frequent gangs? Do you buy crack off the street? Ok, then, your fear is justified. Idiots. .

LA is no different than any other big city. New York if full of shallow business and financial jerks who prey on each other to get ahead, in Wash DC it's political jerks, in Miami it's the tourist industry, don't know about Chicago – grain commodities trading jerks? Each town has its specialty. You want sanity in LA, try Pasadena. They've got nice homes, families, CalTech and the Jet Propulsion Lab where science makes history. Yearly there's the Rose Parade. You have to know where to look in each town. London is full of upper crust twits trying to impress each other. They put the Middletons down for having a successful party business but are doing the same thing only more la-de-da.

    1. The guy has been the lead in 2 movies that tanked so bad you forgot them before they opened, so MAY BE he can't get amother "meaningful" job in movies from people with intelligencce. And that has made him bitter.
    2. The guy is "British" – wow, has he ever been to Britain? London is filthy, broken, smelly and really sad. If you wear white socks in London, by 2 PM they are grey and by 6 PM they are black socks! And everything and everyone there looks grey. In LA, you don't usually need socks, so I cannot make direct comparison, but – LA has beaches, sun, happy looking people, wide streets and places that you actually want to go to, so may be the guy should try London to find a real dump. And that will make him more bitter.
    3. Re the tattoo comment. the guy has no class. He's just bitter.
    4. The one thing nobody in LA does is say bad things. They just don't do it (I'm from NY, so we kinda notice this real fast). The LA people, who just include the most important and powerful people in the movie business, will not tolerate this kind of childish outburst, so this guy is toast. He just ended his tiny movie career. He needs to go back to whatever little town in England he came from and become something else, may be a ferret catcher? Cause he looks really bitter.
    5. The guy is not anyone that anyone with a semifunctioning brain would want to hang out with. So he's unemployed, has no chance of employment, does not know how good he had it in LA, and he's bitter.
    6. Who is this guy anyway?

Los Angeles has been ranked the third richest city and fifth most powerful and influential city in the world, behind only New York City in the United States. The Los Angeles combined statistical area (CSA) has a gross metropolitan product (GMP) of $831 billion (as of 2008), making it the third largest economic center in the world, after the Greater Tokyo Area and the New York metropolitan area. s the home base of Hollywood, it is known as the "Entertainment Capital of the World", leading the world in the creation of motion pictures, television production, video games, and recorded music.-----Chew on a brick Pettyfer...maybe we just don't like you....

Alex is right about Los Angeles. His language was strong, but he is correct. I, too, lived in Los Angeles from 2003-2005 but it felt more like 20 years due to all the negative things that happened to me while I was be there. As soon as you leave LAX you go right into Inglewood where I lived during the 2 years I was there. I was threaten by gang members, used by a woman who only purpose was to be the next "Halle Berry," rent for a little studio apartment no bigger than my room at my parents house growing up is at least $1000, had a hard time finding a job, people cussing at me for no apparent reason, etc. I could tell you more, but it would take all day. After a while I think the good Lord was telling me that I had know business In LA, so I moved back to the Virginia. I have not been back there since. The only thing I do miss about LA is my cousin and his family, a special friend and the LA landscape: the nice weather, canyons, beaches and palm trees. Its a resort area in my opinion for celebrites, not for honest everyday working people. If you want to live in LA and if you can afford it, try not to live in Hollywood, Venice Beach,Watts, etc. Live in the outskirts such as Palmdale and Lancaster. I also forgot to mention the traffic. People are much friendlier in San Diego and San Francisco. Thank You for letting this Souhern Gentleman express himself! My everyone stay safe and God Bless!

There are good people everywhere, but in LA, especially the Westside (West of Vermont) All the narcissists, prom kings and queens, applause starved exhibitionists, talented or otherwise from all over the world are drawn into the gravitational pull of the myth we call "Hollywood". They are everywhere. This is a demographic in which most, not all, are working their way to the top with their elbows. I grew-up in this town and most of my neighbors where celebrities and industry professionals; I have consciously tried hard not to become cynical and insincere so I always try to see the goodt in everyone. LA is a big city there is something that can match all personalities and all career types. There is very family oriented/friendly areas of the city and allot of west coast culture. You don’t haft to mix into the upper class (Go to the Hills or beachfront of Malibu beyond upper class) if you don’t want to.

The majority of people there are shallow, pretentious fakes. Outside of that area is where real people with real jobs that aren't based on make-believe live. It ain't Orange County and it's not the Valley. And what has your crap, nowhere city given the world. This Entertainment Section you probably rabidly click to every time you get on the internet? 99% of it's content was created in LA. If it weren't for this town, you wouldn't have your movies nor your television. Sure, there are bad examples of both, but there are also flicks and shows that have made you laugh out loud and cry like a baby. So, suck it losers from nowhere towns where everyone works in the insurance business or any other of the thousands of boring industries out there. When an entire section of CNN online is devoted to whatever it is your city brought to the world, then by all means say something. Otherwise, just thank God for Hollywood, for it has allowed you to escape your otherwise miserable lives. You wouldn't be here at the Marquee Blog otherwise.

You have to understand the culture of that profession. What people fail to realize is that most of the people here are from somewhere else. THEY ARE NOT FROM LA. For all of you who hate LA and live here, my wish for you is that you find another city to live in. LA is what you make it out to be. I live in LA now but before LA I lived in DC, NYC and London. There are things about each city that you can complain about. The diversity here is great, we have lots of museums and other things of culture and the fact that there are so many places within the city that are set aside to enjoy nature is great. I pass by the beach and wetlands on my way to work every day and see ducks, geese and sometimes herons. It seems like some people don't know how to take advantage of the good things this city has to offer. Oh, and everyone lives in fear is not true. The thing is the most Americans think that this country is heaven on earth... But the way it is, most of the people who come over here, after the initial uh! ah!- bedazzlement by the excitement of superficial glitz, they realize that there is so much rottenness in this society, and that it's people are really at disadvantage.

I read once an article written by a Russian ballet dancer, who by coming here had all his dreams dashed. He was successful, but after he 'd seen the kind of life Americans really live, and what kind of society it is, he realized that his life in USSR was much richer and much more meaningful then lives people live here.... and that was even before the "fall " of USSR!
There is so much Americans could learn from other cultures, but Americans are to proud to learn anything from others. The rosy bubble is bursting, Americans!

The streets are literarily falling apart due to any lack of maintenance. Businesses are boarded up in prime areas and shutdown. The music industry disappeared many years ago and the film industry shoots in every other state but California for tax incentives. The sidewalks were dirty even in Beverly Hills. I've lived in Los Angeles for more than 60 years. For a long time, i thought it was the center of the known Universe and the greatest place to live in the world. But Pettyfer is right. LA has become so big and such a discombobulated mess that it really isn't a city anymore. It's a patchwork of wealthy communities, dangerous ghettos of poverty, tawdry landmarks, and way too many people. People here live within their own little communities and venture out of them at their own risk. A 30 minute drive in any direction will lead to a world of incredible opulence and wealth, or a street where you could shot in the head and robbed. LA used to be a great place. I know. I lived there. Now, it's just a huge, lumbering, unmanageable monster with roads that are unfit for 4-wheel drive vehicles and people who have lived in the same home for 20 years but don't know a single neighbor. Pettyfer may be a putz, but he's right about LA.

Having lived in San Diego for several years, I can understand what he is saying about LA. The people are rude, obnoxious and downright mean to anyone that doesn't live in the right zip code or drive the right car. I go to LA only when family come to visit and want to be tourists. Otherwise, I avoid it at all costs. Pettyfer is just being honest, and I doubt people won't hire him because he hates LA. Tons of actors and actresses hate LA, but like any other job, you have to go where the work is.

Also, so much diversity has caused this city to have too many barriers. Everything is bilingual - thus, people who speak Spanish are catered to and have no incentive to speak English - they call it progress!>!>!>!> Geez, I'm Spanish and I can see that this city is a tidal wave of illegal immigration and apocolyptic when the big one strikes. I live here because I have a job, otherwise this is not the best place to have kids growing up or just plain live, unless you have lots of money.

Pam – He is spot on, sans the LA-ish tattoo. Shallow, fearful suck-ups looking for fame. I have never met so many self involved arrogant people in my life...and I have traveled all over the world! Shallow LA'ers are moving to Dallas, TX now to reinvigorate their self importance. All they talk about is how important they were in LA and people use them for their position because they know a D list celebrity. Puh-lease!

The queen mother died nearly 10 years ago. Way to show your ignorance of current events.

Seeing some guy who can't find a comb for his messy hair, who can't grow a real beard, who has a tattoo (what tribe is he with?), who has a sewer for a mouth, and who has the vocabulary of a 3rd grader makes me ask, "Who the hell is that piece of human trash to criticize any thing or any place? Go back under the rock you crawled out from under!".

He may have a point, I was recently on the "leftcoast" and found the place to be a bit of a letdown. I have good friends there and enjoy doing things in their company. Enjoy a few of the sights. But overall didn't care for LA as a whole. I prefer Chicago and New York or even Miami for a few days of R&R. Out

His honesty is refreshing, and make all the snide cliche comments about him you want, but in reality L.A. is the breeding ground for ignorant unethical people to feel at home at. Don't get me wrong, not everyone in L.A. is terrible but way to many FAKE smiles and conniving personalities roam the streets taking advantage of one another just to ahead do live there. The worst part of it is we broadcast across the world 24/7.

I grew up in San Marino, and it is a beautiful place, with normal healthy families and a top notch school district. Maybe our friend Alex needs to get out of crappy Hollywood and actually take a look around. Manhattan and Hermosa Beach are great too.

L.A. .. I'll sum it up for you. 5% rich, 35% middle class, and 60% poverty. We stole all this wonderful land from the indigenous people and tried to install an unharmonious system with mother nature. This is what you get for it and it's coming back to you. I think it's ironic humor, I'm part English and part Cherokee so I know first hand from both sides what has taken place.. and this my furry little friends.. is karma.

What a putz. I lived in LA for 12 years. I loved it. I've got a feeling he doesn't know how to go out in LA and have a good time. He is probably responsible for his own misery. LA has a great art and music scene, fantastic food, and lots of cool things to do. It's easy to trash LA. It takes time. It took me 2 years to figure it out. It's a completely unique city. I worked in the entertainment industry and it has it's negatives, but you have to look outside of that to get the full picture. I hung out with the set designers, the studio musicians, the artists. I went to museums. Figured out the bar scene and the music scene. And if you're working at his level there's lots of cool private parties to attend. He's just an ungrateful child.

I find it interesting the article says the star "trashed the West Coast." L.A. is hardly the entire west coast. In fact, it doesn't even really represent Southern California, something many don't realize.

As a longtime L.A. citizen I agree with him 120%. I only live hear for work and if daily copter flights were possible, I'd live elsewhere. In no other city do you encounter such sheer numbers of ego-maniacal a@#&^%$# that operate under the idea that they alone are the only ones who matter. It is a town where a schmuck who delivers pizzas buys $200 shirts simply to "fit-in" or be discovered. It is a town where parents think they don't have to change their lives after the birth of their spawn and that it is up to everyone else to raise their kids.
This list could go on for a long time. LA is the stereotype that many believe it to be. Shallow, self-centered, and culturally retarded.
