Katie Holmes settles with Star Magazine

Star Magazine has issued an apology to Katie Holmes because of a recent headline about the actress.

The actress had filed a multi-million lawsuit against the publication after it recently published an article titled “ADDICTION NIGHTMARE – Katie DRUG SHOCKER! – The Real Reason She Can’t Leave Tom.”

The magazine announces the apology on the cover of its most recent issue.

“In a recent issue of Star, we published headlines about Katie Holmes that could be read to suggest that she was addicted to drugs," reads the apology printed in the issue published on Wednesday.

"Star did not intend to suggest that Ms. Holmes was a drug addict or was undergoing treatment for a drug addiction. Star apologizes to Ms. Holmes for any misperception and will be making a substantial donation to charity on Ms. Holmes’ behalf for any harm that we may have caused.”

Holmes issued a statement which said: “I’m pleased that this lawsuit could be resolved amicably and accept American Media’s apology. With this dispute out of the way, I look forward to once again focusing my attention on my family and career.”

As part of the settlement, Star's parent company, American Media, agreed to make a donation on Holmes behalf to the Dizzy Feet Foundation, which helps underprivileged children pursue their love of dance.

She looks good. She was even hotter when she had the pixie haircut.
Must be starved for attention since her "Jackie O" portrayal got nixed in the US. I mean, c'mon, suing a tabloid?

This is indicative of the blatant lying and misrepsentation that permeates our country. Good for her! Now if we can just get some accountability for the tabloid-caliber lies coming from the likes of Trump, Palin & Company, we can return America to greatness.

Never been a fan of Katie Holmes, she is a wishy washy actress, and by the sounds of things not very good in parenting skills. Sames goes for her husband!

They are not alone in this department though, there is another rather large family that also doesnt seem to know how bring up children.

Keep acting and save as much money as you can Katie. Because everyone knows Tom starts acting strange and then walks away from his marriages after tiring of whatever wife he is married too or girl he is dating at the time. I still think he is closeted.

Americans are affraid and are ashamed of the fact that some people speak with an accent. A Third country or not many of us speak with an accent (PROUDLY SO) because we know more than one language. I Speak and read three. This alone makes me smarter and more culturally developed. Learning/knowing something does not make you "smarter". All people are born with their own, certain intellectual limit. Some have more capacity than others, and sometimes you only find that ability with certain interests or maybe just fate, but it is foolish to assume you're more intelligent for learning something. I fully encourage people to seek education in whatever areas are important and important to them, but it will not make them "smarter".

American educated? Look who's talking! Your punctuation is hideous.... Who places question marks and exclamation points together?

So my guess is you are either a pompous brit or from a lowly 3rd world country.

How are your teeth and your sh#% eating grin?

I will always be proud to live in the best country in the world!

    • ItsDaPoleece

fauxhawk70, placing a question mark immediately before an exclamation mark is more proper than you think. These two punctuation marks have been used together for centuries. In fact, back in the mid-1900s it was proposed that in the event of a writer wanting to express an excited question, they formally introduce a new punctuation mark called an "interrobang." This consisted of the "?" and "!" symbols combined into one mark and sharing the lower point. This was not officially accepted by the body that decides what punctuation and other literary elements become a standard. That decision held that the "?!" shall stay proper.

It's pretty immature and petty to criticize someone for their spelling, grammar, punctuation or typing. An often more useful skill that many people eventually come to realize is effective communication. The person you criticized made his point and you understood it. He achieved the goal of his message. You nitpicked at his punctuation incorrectly and then insulted him, as well as over half the human population on Earth. The only thing you achieved is looking ignorant.

      You are a retard.

@god: Apparently YOUR education level (not you're) isn't spectacular. If you are trying to bash America, why are you on an American website, reading about an American actress, written by an American journalist, that will be read by, you guessed it, Americans? If our education isn't as at a level you seem fit, stick to your (not you're) own country's publications.

Under American law, you can print anything about a celebrity, true or not true, and not be guilty of libel. You can't win a case like Holmes's unless you can prove–truly prove–that the publisher was operating from malice. So Katie may as well accept an apology: that's all she would get, anyway, and maybe not that. Remember Kato Kaelin? One magazine published terrible lies about him. He sued, but he lost because he could not prove malice. He even had to pay the magazine's legal expenses!

      April 28, 2011 at 9:13 am | Report abuse |
    • Tim

Rob, that's not accurate or true. It's more than merely proof of malice. It is the intent to damage someone's standing, finances, etc., knowing full well that it's not true. If they have reasonable proof what they print is true, then it doesn't matter if it affects their career, finances or standing. The other side of the coin, is that it's considered fair game, as the celebrity is assumed to have the attention and pull to tell their side of the story to refute the accusations, so it becomes more of an entertainment piece. Tabloids have been sued and people have won large sums of money. There is a point where they can only go so far, regardless of intent. The burden of proof is on the person suing, but legal issues are too complex to state one way or another in any default manner.

That said, people that libel others and make accusations, knowing it's not true (or yes, doing so out of malice) are more liable by default, because the person they accuse doesn't have the stardom and ability to respond to defend themselves. It's more involved than that, but it's not so cut and dry as you had suggested. That said, it's surprising these tabloids can even exist when they make a living by trashing celebrities (regardless if I feel some might deserve it). It might seem like it's all in good fun, but the lunatics that buy that stuff and read it, are not likely reading it for entertainment and fiction. Anyway, what happened to the good old tabloids that talked about Satan on Earth, space aliens and end of the world stuff? Now it's all boring celebrity gossip, that most people wouldn't care about even if it were true!
