Depp to do cameo in '21 Jump Street' movie

Looks like Johnny Depp is moving back to "21 Jump Street"—the actor is set to make a cameo in the big-screen adaptation of his popular '80s TV series.

As Marquee previously reported, Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum will headline the movie about cops who go undercover as high school students. According to Entertainment Weekly, Depp—who starred on the Fox series with Holly Robinson Peete, Peter DeLuise and Dustin Nguyen—will also play a small role in the film.

Hill, who co-wrote the script, has long said he wanted Depp to be a part of the movie. "Hopefully, he does it," he said back in November. "It would be awesome if he did it."

Though details of Depp's cameo have yet to be revealed, the actor jokingly came up with a scenario for his character, telling EW last year, “Someone will say, ‘Whatever happened to Tom Hanson?’ and they’ll find me somewhere hoarding jars of peanut butter and shaking in my underpants.”

The "21 Jump Street" movie is set to begin shooting in New Orleans this month.

Remakes are not inherently bad or wrong. Jimmy Stewart's version of "The Man Who Knew Too Much," Charlton Heston's version of "The Ten Commandments," Boris Karloff's version of "Frankenstein," and Steve McQueen's "The Magnificent Seven" are all classics - and all remakes of earlier films. Problems develop when a remake is miscast, unfaithful to the original and/or a faded Xerox.

He should have Tim Burton's hair and make-up people do him up right for the cameo.

The only reason anyone will buy a ticket to this remake is to see JD hoarding jars of peanut butter and shaking in his underpants.

I wonder what Whawhawhat is drinking at Milky D(ick)s to make him so grumpy?

21 Jumpstreet (the show) was cheesy (and wonderful) for its time. Not sure how it's tested over the years, but anybody who grew up watching it has to at least give this remake a shot.

Mattk and Really? said it best: the old show wasn't Shakespeare, and it's formula was really a simple one, so there's no reason to judge this remake before it's given its due.

That said, I too would LOVE to see cameos from the old cast members. What else have they got goin on?!

Why not make a Greatest American Hero movie next? Hollywood is becoming washed up with originality. Look at TV nowadays, CSI Miami, CSI Vegas, CSI New York, the many faces of Law & Order, the countless rip offs they feed us daily. It was just a matter of time that movies would become the same. I say bring back Growing Pains with both Brad Pitt and Leo DiCaprio reprising their roles....we know Hollywood has already thought about it.

Someone in Hollywood is likely planning a remake of '80s hit "Purple Rain" starring Justin Bieber as The Kid, the cast of iCarly as the Revolution, Miley Cyrus as Apollonia, and the Jonas Brothers as Morris Day and the Time. Yippee! 🙁

It's a whole lot easier to sit back and criticize others than to actually have the talent to create or revamp anything. Movie makers put out what people will pay for. Period. U want higher quality work, find more people who are interested in it. And yes read a freakin book! On a lighter note, J. Depp still looks so dam good doesnt he? (sigh)

I swear! Hasnt Hollywood heard of the saying 'If it isnt broken, dont fix it'? I agree no remake. An up to date version would be alot better. Otherwise theyll run a good thing into the ground. And why not habe all the stars make a cameo appearence if possible, instead of just Depp? I also agree, its time for Hollywood to come up w/some original work for a change. Well I liked the original show and watched just about every episode. So Ill check out the new version. Keep your fingers crossed!

I think Depp should play the role of the Captain. and instead of a remake should just make it an up to date version. Deluise could be the retired deli owner and Robinson could be a D.A. or something.

Loved 21 Jump Street, was sorry when Depp left, never liked the Grieco replacement. Have enjoyed most of Depp's movies and am glad to see him doing a cameo here. He seems to be a nice person, was very pleased to see him accept his award from the Kid's Choice in person, he was about the only recipient I knew off – my tweens made me watch. Would like to see Holly Robinson and DeLuise too.

The TV series were awesome. I wonder how they are going to make a great movie out of it. It's too bad that Stephen J Canell couldn't be around to see this. Also too bad they won't be filming it in Vancouver – where the original TV series were shot. I hope each character makes a cameo, sort of where are they now.

@James – Bitter much, dude? Have you read the script? Do you know the plot of the movie? I am not one to go all gangbusters on remakes, but I at least have the respect to give it a shot after watching the previews if they look good. And nothing against Jonah Hill, but the series had one Romeo and one SideKick.. Depp was the chick magnet and DeLuise was the comic relief. Same would be here with Tatum as the chick magnet and Hill as the comic relief.

Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum? So, it's a parody? Doesn't anyone have respect for other peoples work anymore? Someone already had this idea, back in the 80's. I wish I knew what it was like to be totally comfortable taking credit for only being mildly creative. "Well, I took a show that already existed, with a plot line that already existed, and then I threw in a few jokes and called it my own". Superbad was the last Jonah Hill film worth watching. Absolutely everything since then has just been a giant cup of garbage juice. There has never been a Channing Tatum film worth watching, so no point searching his IMDB.

I agree. Seems like all remakes these days are just campy parodies of how shows are remembered, not how they actually were. Not all original shows consisted of camp comedy, so why make campy remakes? Oh yeah, because the writers have no original ideas so they have to rely on contrived humor. Yawn.
