Jim Carrey's on his way to 'The Office'Expect the season finale of "The Office" to end on a truly funny note now that Jim Carrey has signed on to appear in the hourlong episode. According to Entertainment Weekly, Carrey will join fellow guest stars Ricky Gervais, Will Arnett, James Spader, Ray Romano and Catherine Tate as candidates who want to take over the job vacated by former Dunder Mifflin office manager Michael Scott (Steve Carell). Though Will Ferrell, who plays Deangelo Vickers, seems to have a lock on the job at the moment, Spader and "Doctor Who" alum Tate are likely to be the most serious contenders to take over for Carell, since all of the other actors are committed to other projects. The season 7 finale of "The Office" airs May 19. Which actor would you like to see manage "The Office"? |

I love jim carrey. His movie is funny and warm, making me regain the confidence of life. you can go to see his newest movie trailer in http://www.wally.tv/ tha's really fantastic.
I read this just for kicks, and all I can get from it is that THE MAN needs to get laid in a bad way.
How about Don Rickles? He is funny and crude and crazy.
@The Man: What do you think about Sarah Silverman in that role?
Jim Carrey is the only actor that is as awesome as Steve Carell, in my eyes. I really really really really hope he gets picked. I will cry tears of joy! I love Steve Carell but I've accepted that he's leaving and if anyone can come the closest to filling his shoes, it's Jim Carrey!
TEAM WILL, ray romano will ruin the show
I'm fine with Jim Cary as long as he doesn't use the forum to proselytize the fabricated attack on vaccinations as a primary cause of autism. I have yet to hear a retraction or apology to any families who followed Cary's advise and withheld vaccinations and eventually contracted the disease that the vaccinations were intended to protect against.
^^^up there stupid.
I can totally see James Spader in the show. He is a wonderful actor who is great at dry humor. I think he could create a character that would allow all the cast members to shine without being so over the top as to make ensemble work impossible; heck he held his own with William Shatner without resorting to chewing all the scenery...no easy task! Both Will Ferrell (as he has already demonstrated) and Jim Carey are so over the top that they would tend to unbalance the show. Spader definitely gets my vote. I doubt this will come to pass because he signed to do a movie the week before The Office announcement, so he too could be out of the running.
Anyone but Gervais. Please.
Of the list provided, I would pick Will Arnett. Arnet would be hilarious as boss, though Ferrell has done a great job so far.
and I love womens fishy bottoms.
molly shannon
Will Ferrel without hesitation
A lot of these ideas are alright.
WIll Ferell seems like a great candidate. While I thought his comedy was good initially (Ex: Step Brothers, Anchorman, ect.), I didn't think he'd be able to fit the spot. Then I saw him in The Other Guys, in which he filled a totally different role and it worked out great. I think Ferell could pull it off.
I like Jim Carrey, but as others have said, I think he's too big of a movie star. Plus, he seems more like a physical comedian, which is too energetic for the role.
Some others I'd like to see try and fill the role would be: Vince Vaughn, Simon Pegg, Kevin James, or even Stephen Colbert/Jon Stewart. The last two are highly unlikely, but I think they can mend that comedic genius to fill the role.
i think it is gonna be todd packer. they sent him to sabre headquarters in tallahassee a few episodes ago and in the last episode they talked about Micheal Scott giving recommendations for him replacement. Who better for him to recommend then his best friend Todd Packer? it just all fits together. I dont think its gonna be a good idea to bring him on as the manager but i could see it happening. He definitely has the Scranton personality.
Simon Pegg-yes. Ricky Gervais and Russel Bland-no. Zach Braff-yes. Packer-yes. Dwight K. Schrute-yes. The Temp-yes. Basically, anyone from the office would be good. Jim Carrey-no. Will Ferrett-no. Spader-yes. Romano, Arnett, Tate-no. Final answer!
Simon Pegg, Ricky Gervais or Russel Brand nuff said.
Dwight would be a good pick. Couple that with the fact that he OWNS the building!
Noooooooo! This is all wrong will and jim carey are not nearly as funny as steve!! You need to keep the old cast together and let rain wilson take over steves spot ! Idiots...
The show can continue without Michael Scott. Michael Scott was not the FIRST regional manager of the Scranton branch and he won't be the last! What about Packer?!? He has a history with the Scranton branch. He's just as clueless and crude as Michael Scott! It would work.
Is Gary Busey still in the mix?
The fact is no one can replace Steve Carrell. The show will suffer when he leaves.
What about the Donald (Trump)? He would be good for one episode, a team of him and Dwight would be epic.
Carrey or Romano-both HILARIOUS~~~~
Here comes the Shark. I expected the Office to bow out gracefully, but now it's just going to be sad. Farrell squeezed in as a fit....but none of these others are going to fit the model. They should have accepted their fate when Steve quit.
Ray Romano? Are you kidding me? The Office was created because of TV being dominated by painfully unfunny shows like Everybody Love Raymond. If they put Romano on The Office, it will be a death blow to the show.
With that being said...hasn't The Office run it's course? Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of the show, but just feel like some sitcoms are worn out (I'll skip naming a few others). Steve Carell gets it, so it would seem the rest of the cast should take their cue as well.
Absolutely right, couldn't have said it better. I can't believe all the stupid ideas people are coming up with. Someone said Conan O'Brien before, I hope they get punched in the face today.
Zach Braff would be BRILLIANT!
Nope, you just failed at life. Zach Braff = opposite of brilliant.
Three words: Jumped the Shark! The Office is done without Carrell, no need to find a replacement for one more season.
I liked James Spader most in "Pretty In Pink".
How about Danny Devito?? I could see the little guy being funny in this.
JJ: You obviously have never seen Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia where DeVito is currently on. The funniest show on TV better than The Office anyway, so why would he leave to a show that's on its way down the toilet?
Catherine Tate is the funniest of the list candidates!
Carrey is ok, but I don't know about him on the office.
I've never seen the show.
Could Dude Shen get a part in the show?
Charlie Sheen would be great in the show.
$1000 says they make Pam boss, they have already given her more responsibility around the office as well as a more dominant authoritative roll. My guess is they end up adding a character but in a different position. I don't know how I would like that though, i also feel the Pam and Jim story line to be lame and it would end up focusing on them far too much.
CAN JOIN THE PARTY?I BROUGHT WINE!
This show should/could have been canceled 2 years ago. It's not even funny anymore. I really thought with Correll leaving it would just end, NBC is going to run the show into the ground by keeping it around for another season with someone else.
John Cleese?
I stand corrected, a rhino. It was still funnier than hell ! LOL
They should do one season with Ricky Gervais then end the show. How much longer is John Krasinski going to stay? What about the guy that plays Andy? He's way too funny for TV. He has the career Steve Carrell should've had if he didn't make that terrible Evan Almighty.
Pauly shore, would be a good canidate!cause he definately would not be profesional!
Will Ferrell definitely.
the show really sucks.
I don't watch the office. It's stupid, and filled with dumb situations. A total waste of time. I did watch it once and I couldn't stand it. If you have time to watch it, your just being sucked into a sink hole of stupidity.
WHO CARES! The Office needs to go... "Your fired"
A star such as he only comes once a generation.
Talent is really what it is all about.
He is a wonderful talent.
Who has tim to watch TV lol
I think it would be hilarius to see gerard butler on the office.
When I saw Carrey and thought Drew and not Jim. Truthfully, they should put an ensamble actor or a Character actor in the slot. Think Carrell before the office. What they will do is put someone in thats descpicable, but someone who can make you feel sorry for him, like Carrell, and Gervais before him. John C. Reilly would be a great fit. Better than who has been mentioned. Paul Rudd is a good choice, I think the best choice would be Bruce Campbell though.
@nicole look we hav the same name.
James Spader rules, the Office will benefit from his smarmy charm.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fkvadq4VjA
Jim Carey will rock on this show. His boardroom scene in Liar Liar should give you a glimpse of what's he's capable of on this show.
No no...you all have it wrong! The office needs Zach Galifianakis as Michael Scott!!
come on chris rock or kevin james!!!!
No one in America watches Jim Carrey movies or "The Office". This will make "The Office" even less successful than it already has been.
Carey...nah. WAY over the top. Just can't help himself. And he's NOT available...
Spader is the way to go and that's who will get it.
Bill Murray on the Office? I'd watch that, but I doubt it would happen. After all Chevy Chase is on NBC, and those two might meet each other in a hallway and have to go all deathmatch in the studio, lol. Seriously though the racist crap is played out and I'd rather watch Community over the Office at this point
Jim carrey would be an awful idea, he hasn't been funny in years and is simply an overactor in every role.
We love the show and enjoy watching it.
Jason Batemen is a tremendous talent.
Why are all of you so set on jim xcarrey? his humor is for like 12 year old boys. will farrell or bust.
Jason Bateman!
Will Ferrell.... hands down
spader
The Office is perfect for Jim Carey, he's not that great of an octor and I don't believe he's that funny, but for the Office he would be good. Jim Carey is all most 50 so he's washed up in Hollywood he would be makeing more movies but he's not a box office draw. It would be better for him to go TV.
I love this show. It may just be a good thing to bring it all to an end. The show just won't be the same without steve.
Harvey from TMZ should be the boss!!! The office becomes a paparazi company
Dave chappelle would be too funny. That is if he came out of retirement.
The Office needs to be run by Carlos Mencia. DEE-DEE-DEE!!!!!
WHO CARES? I HATE THAT SHOW, LOL
dice clay just might be funny
Great. The Office becomes the 21st century version of Love Boat. Oh, I bet no one can wait for the grasping actors lined up for guest star spots!
I think they blew it completely. Bringing in big names to replace Steve Carell was a terrible idea. I love Will Ferrell but I think he's a bad fit for The Office. I personally think they should have written Jim to be the new manager. He already has a dynamic with the corporate people and the pranks that he has pulled over the years are way more epic than anything that Michael Scott would have done. I think that they are just trying to nail the coffin shut on a big positive note on this one. RIP The Office, we loved you while you were great!
Spader is a hack
You really want together users hooked next season? Rashida Jones as Karen Fillipelli transfers from Urticaria to Scranton. Her character on Parks and Rec is useless. Think of the tension she can cause Pam Jim Andy and the others...
Will Arnett, without a doubt! He was fantastic in Arrested Development and can deliver the quirky/crazy in a sincere way. Would be a perfect fit with the rest of the cast.
Not much to pick from out of those mentioned but probably Tate I would like to see Chevy Chase in that role
Definitely Spader. I think he's the only one who can pull it off. Although I would like to see David Wallace back. I see him as a great straight man to all the antics of the rest of the cast, especially Dwight.
Bill Murray
I am responsible for getting a lot of people hooked on the office...(Taking a bow...lol)...I did panic a little when I heard Steve Carrell was leaving, but there are a couple of people who just might pull it off...I think John Lithgow or William Shatner would have been a dream come true, you know, someone with that back and forth good guy-bad guy in a split second acting, but I do like the idea of his counter-part, Spader. Portia de Rossi would also be a good contender (very good character in Better Off Ted). While I do still love Carrey and Ferell, I think they are better suited for "movie" characters. Which ever direction they go, it has to be someone that can actually keep up with the entire cast. Those guys are naturals. Everyone in those characters seem as though thats exactly who they are for real....Love em'!
Anyone but will, this just isn't his thing. I love his movies but don't cars for him in the office.
@jenjen the truth is supposed to hurt retart!!!!!
Dave chappelle would be way too funny. That is if he came out of retirement.
I would pick Jim Carey for the position!!!! Nyuk nyuk nyuk. 😉
How many times has michael fired an employee and then said "Just kidding." He is doing it to us now. He is not leaving
My vote goes to Will Forte or Bill Hader.
I thought jim carey was funny when I was in the 6th grade, im now 26 and dont see anything funny about the guy. Id rather watch 2 girls 1 cup then watch him. Half the faces he makes wouldnt even make my one year old son laugh. Anyway, I wish George Carlin was still alive, he would have been perfect...m But since hes not, I say Roseanne Barr, I freakin still watch re runs of Roseanne, and still find them funny.
Good riddance to Will Ferrel
Promote from within. Jim
Given that Carrey has probably contributed to the deaths of countless children due to preventable disease as a result of his anti-vaccination campaign, it would be truly irresponsible for The Office to even consider putting him on the show.
Lola, did u say something? Wait that was the wind blowing. Let's just dismiss the fact that Jim Carrey is the funniest actor of the past 20 years. Yeh that's bright.
@N....the truth hurts.
Hi,I am from China, welcome to my space.
i vote for charlie sheen. He can save the show.
Both Carey and Ferrell are great. Have both of 'em do the finals! I know...too costly...bu. well worth it! Advertise it well and you'll have millions tune in!
david allen grier
I would love to see James Spader get the job. He's hilarious.
Personally, I think James Spader would be an excellent choice. I positively can't stand Jim Carrey or Will Farrell. I
chose James Spader b/c he was excellent in Boston Legal & like someone has already posted, if he can put up
with William Shatner he can do anything! I'm rooting for you James Spader!
Catherine Tate is hilarious! I would love to see more of her. If you don't know who she is, check out The Catherine Tate Show on Netflix.
hav a episode with all these funny actors takin place at a huge party & mak em say all these funny lines!!!great idea or not?
I think Spader would actually be the best replacement. I doubt he'll get the gig, but he would really be interesting.
Will Arnett. No contest.
Tus nalgas....
Michael cera or david cross would kill it an eat it!
Better yet... this would make a great series finale... dump the office altogether... man what a god awful show.
@jenjen how rude r u?
Will Ferrell = way too predictable and untalented, way over-valued. Jim Carrey = way too self-important. Ray Romano = way too annoying. James Spader = nicely curt and understated.
How about George W. Bush!? LOL...
Hi,
I must say Mr. Carell did a great job as Micheal, it was always fun to see him. I was surprised when I heard he was leaving, but if I have to choose I feel Mr. Carrey would be the best candidate.
I dont want a new bss! I liked Michael Scott.......oh well nothing ventured nothing gained in a new nusiness venture.
Andrew Dice Clay would be the AWESOME for 'The Office'! And anyone who thinks otherwise eats Gerber food!
Murray from flight of the conchords, much better than all this bunch, do it!!!
either way... either way 🙂
Michael Keaton
Gary Cole
Bill Murray
Martin Short
Bill Shatner
Bill murray Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!
Really guys will ferell he is so annoyingly stupid and could not act for anything......& steve carell will definatly be missed... i died from laughter almost every episode!!!!
The Only 2 I would like to see would be Bill Murray or Chris Tucker. While Bill Murray is a pipe dream, Tucker is available and hasnt done anything lately. Can you imagine him with that silly ass grin running the Office.
Jim carrey would be the best replacement for carell ..........will ferell would just ruin it..... And seriously we have to make everything a racial debate:?????????
How about the recently out of work Jon Cryer? In drag.
Danny mcbride
damon waynes would be a good fit. he was great on in living color and my wife and kids
John lithgow is too animated for the show...he is still one of the best! Too bad 3rd rock from the sun didn't have more viewers...one of the best sitcoms...speaking of brilliant sitcoms..everyone should tune into community...I love it!!! Brilliant brilliant original comdedy series...if you haven't tuned in...you should...you won't be sorry..
I'm just spitballing here, but...
What about Tyler Perry? As Madea? Could be pretty awesome.
Please God, if you are listening do not let Jim Carrey anywhere near The Office. Carrey has not been funny in 15 years. He is absolutely horrible. He is not funny nor can he act to save his life.
I've never heard of any of the people on that list. Who's Jim Carrey? Has he been in any movies?
I think Jim Carrey or Ricky Gervais should take over!
I kinda miss Charlie Sheen!
Personally, I can't wait for the series finale, not that I would watch it. What a horrible show.
Paul Rudd would be fun. Kevin James would be interesting. Bobby D would kill it.
BIll Murray anyone?
How about Kelsey Grammar or John Lovitz??
I prefer to see John Krasinski playing the role of Jim Halpert as a manager. I feel he is the right character.
It is amazing to me how many of you idiots can't spell the actors' names correctly. Don't call yourself a fan of someone's work & then misspell their name. You look ridiculous. With that being said, I can't WAIT to see Jim Carrey on "The Office". I've loved Jim's work for over 20yrs, ever since "In Living Color" was on the air. He, Gervais & Arnett are hilarious & will definitely make the season finale a memorable one. And all of you morons saying "The Office" isn't funny need to STFU & maybe actually WATCH the show before criticizing it. This season has been pretty much perfect. Why come on here & make rude comments about a show you can't stand? Find something better to do. /rant
Barack obama
Who cares it always was a stupid show and always will be. It's just the kind of forgettable shtick that overrated actors like will ferral and jim carey would fit into.
Anybody but please not ferrell. No not ferrell. Yuck ferrell is gross.
If it's James Spader, keep him away from Erin and Pam, his behavior around secretaries is questionable at best!
Two words, people: Pauly Shore.
none of the above. Stephen Colbert!!!!
love, love, LOVE Colbert, but he'd never do it...Loves doing his own show too much; would at least
have to rename it "Colbert's Office."
how could anybody not like ray....everybody loves raymond
Cancel the show. Without Carell, it just won't be the same. This season was a wash anyhow. The show has run it's course. Put it to bed.
That sounds like a great line-up for a finale, but it needs to be a SERIES finale. This show already jumped the shark when Pam & Jim finally got together. This show without Steve Carell will just be sad. It IS an ensemble effort, but so much of it relies on how Michael Scott interacts with each character.
do you even know what "jump the shark" means?
do you even know what "jump the shark" means? the wedding was in no way "jumping the shark"
Jim Hamperton for sure. I would like to see him as manager!!!!
He should become a permanent.
Stephen Colbert is the best choice
They may consider Karl Pilkington from An Idiot Abroad...I have not seen anything that funny in years and he's still fresh on peoples mind. Continue on the theme of putting him into uncomfortable positions. Even if karl was not boss on the show he would still be a great addition to the office to mix things up a bit...
Honestly, I'd like to have Steve Carrel back, without him the office isn't the office.
Julia louis-dreyfus...dwight having to report to a woman would be funny.
Ooh, I like this idea!
Or john goodman
Maybe chris rock or kevin james.b/c of k. james when ever i c a mall cop i cud call him paul blart!!!
Michael Ian Black (or anyone from Stella actually)
what about russell brand hes hilarious
WIll Arnett definitely. He has just the right types of characters to make it work (Arrested Development, Lets's Go To Prison). I love Will Ferrell but since SNL he hasn't found a niche, and I think the Vickers character was never designed to last – it is too ridiculous. I've been crossing my fingers for Arnett since I first heard Michael Scott was leaving the office.
How about jackie chan?
Myself I am the best funnyman
I don't get why John Lehr isn't being considered for this role. He truly has that unique quality that commands your full attention like Carrell. He could give the show a much needed shot of adrenaline without bringing the baggage of a more established star. Will Farrell has been LAME.
Not Will Ferrell please, he is so overrated
PLEASE! Anyone but Ferrell
Catherine Tate!!!! America needs to know who she is and how brilliant she is!!!!
Right now I'm feeling about Michael Scott (and thewhole gang, frankly) the way Deangelo feels about Jim and Pam's baby... but I can't stop watching! I must know what happens next! (I guess I'm addicted!) Someone somewhere suggested Darrell as manager, and I LOVE that idea. But I guess it is not to be... <sigh.
David Spade
I would be the best choice
Murray from FOTC would be awesome! He plays the Steve Carell character better than Carell himself does. Please someone from the show read this. That would be the greatest choice.
Jim Carrey is about as funny as cancer, he one dimensional, much like Robin (has herpes) Williams...
John c. McGinley would be the best choice.
Bring in the mighty beard! That cat from hangover would be hilarious.
Afraid to say if Will Ferrell becomes a regular on the Office I won't be watching.
Ed Helms (Andy) should be the new boss. Will Arnett should take Andy's old position.
If all were available, my order would be 1. Ferrell, 2. Gervais, 3. Arnett, 4. Spader, 5. Ramano, (at this point I've stopped watching so the rest of the list doesn't really matter) 6. Carrey, 7. Tate
James Spader makes the most sense if you've seen Boston Legal. It also opens the door for Mr Shatner to visit which could be some weird magic if they can, even for a moment or two, re-ignite the awesome dynamic Spader-Shatner had on Boston Legal.
James Spader – William Shatner
Jim Carrey – Ewan Mcgregors
Michael Douglas – Matt Damon
Daniel Craig – Toby Jones
Charlie Sheen – Jimmy Kimmel
Sean Penn – James Franco
Jake Gyllenhaal – Heath Ledger
Tom Selleck – Kevin Kline
Why not a promotion from within? Sorry of that was mentioned.
Will Ferrell truly, but Jim Carrey will do.
Will arnett! 😀
As a big Will Ferrell fan i've been HUGELY disappointed in his performances on the show so far.
Actually I could see a hilarious dynamic develop between Dwight and Jim Carey.
And please please please bring back Melora Hardin. I was hoping for Rashida Jones' return where she and Jim would reignite their spark haha, but that doesnt look like its gonna happen any time soon
Sadly, the show has gone so far downhill that not even JC himself can bring it back.
None of them. End the show.
I think Michael Emerson (Ben Linus from LOST) would be cool as the boss, or James Callis from Eureka. But Jim Carrey is cool too.
Howie Mandel might be interesting....heck, they could stick anyone on that show and I would be happy!
I would like to see andrew dice clay manage "the office."
Spader all the way!
GO TATE!!!!!!!!
Jim will make the show somewhat watchable. Sorry, I just couldn't ever get into the show very much at all. The original office was alright, but the American version seemed stale to me. Regardless, I think Carrey will provide some good laughs.
I do like the idea of Murray from Flight of the Concords taking Carrells place. He definitely has the gift of thinking himself a genius while really he is a buffoon. That's what "role" they are looking to fill my dear Kate.
I know. I just want them to get it right. I will miss Steve Carrel, whoever the new "boss" turns out to be...
🙁
Murray all the way. That's perfect!
Dear Kate and Vicki
Congrats on being the only two people on the planet who do not recognize Jim Carrey's comical genius.
,
I'm not sayin' he's not funny, it's just I don't think he'd be a good fit for the show, and seriously? I don't care for his style of comedy. Different strokes for different folks, m'dear...
Key to success as the office manager: someone who is an idiot but thinks himself/herself a genius. Will Ferrell and Jim carrey and maybe Spader could pull that off. The others could not.
What abot the lady from my name is earl.
Nancy Nancy Nancy
The racial comments were definitely over the top. There is a message in everything even if you are joking. You can't say things like "blacks can't have respectable jobs" and then dismiss it as a joke. Its cowardly to say the least.
Will Ferrell
Steven Colbert
Bill Murray
The supervisor from Office Space
Rowan Atkinson!
Why are allthe ni**ers hating?
Jimmy fallon!! he would rock the show
Jimmy Fallon. seriously??? is that guys horribly written, more horribly executed TV show still on? i think we can do better than jimmy Fallon.... wed be better of with Bernie " from weekend at Bernies" and least his acting would be looser..
Jimmy Fallon is no good. He's terrible.
I think its going to be an internal promotion in the end-Dwight!He wants the job so bad and the chemistry is already there.
All these names are just to string us along during the transition.
Make dwight the boss
Dwight would work. Promote from within..
Oh, Catherine Tate would be wonderful (and hysterical), but she is committed to a project at the moment. She's currently rehearsing "Much Ado About Nothing" with David Tennant and the show is running until the beginning of September.
Ricky gervais.
I vote for Will Arnett.
bill murray.
Hands down Jim Carrey. Will Farrell does suck! Will Smith?
Will Ferril, now Jim Carrey? They just keep giving me reasons not to watch that show. Can they get anyone more overated, anyone one else who does the same, old, tired, overacted schtick?
Fine then anderson cooper!now what ...shouldn't you be blogging with glenn beck?
And just to be more relevant to the topic on hand, these last few episodes, the scenes that Will Farell appears in are awkward at best, forced more often. Carrey would be even worse. Carell sometimes hogs the camera too much but has a pathos and sense of everyman that makes his inappropriate behavior somehow come off okay and sometimes brilliantly. Carrey and Farell are WAY too used to mugging their way through to pull that off. I could see Spader. Some of the other suggestions like Kevin Nealon (really?) or Chris Rock are just ludicrous. Was there ever a less funny stand up comedian than Chris Rock? The Office hinges on Carell and Rainn Wilson providing a gateway from mundane reality to absurdist fantasy. WIlson is unhinged, but Carell's replacement MUST be able to smoothly move between worlds to continue to make this work.
But Jim Carrey isn't funny, he's just annoying.
Charlie Sheen would be an awesome replacement. Timing is perfect too.
@ladylike
"NO..............not at all. There's Cheers, Mash, Three's Company, and Seinfeld."
And all of them, without exception, dramatically dropped off in quality after the first few seasons. Just go back and watch them in chronological order on DVD or Tivo or whatever format you prefer, and its obvious. In the past, without the technology to view episodes in fairly short intervals, you might not notice, just like you don't notice someone growing old if you see them everyday. Just a "for instance", I LOVED M*A*S*H growing up. But as I watch reruns, I notice things like they stopped "filming" shows and started taping them. It lost it's poignancy and became more like a play. Same thing happened to Happy Days". It was based in large part on the film "American Graffiti" but in the third or fourth year they started taping it, and to me watching in retrospect, it completely changes the tone.
Dream List of possible candidates:
John Cusack
Ryan Reynolds
Chris Tucker
Rob Lowe
Shia Laboeuf
James Spader
(Of course it doesn't hurt that all of the above are easy on the eyes) 😉
Maybe:
Jon Cryer
Jonathan Silverman
Hell No:
Will Farrell
Charlie Sheen
Jim Carrey
Will Farrell (again hell no)
George Lopez??!! Are you high? That guy last said something funny in the 80s. Carrell's replacement should be Gary Busey, Cloris Leachman, Mike Tyson, Rosie O'Donnell, or perhaps Edward Cullen.
Will Ferrell
http://oventina.webs.com/
george lopez would be kinda nice.
One name not being mentioned is Kevin Nealon. He was the first person I thought of after hearing they were looking for a replacement for Steve. I think his humor fits the show perfectly.
They should put george lopez !
get someone we want!!!!
wow another idiotic freak on the show!!!way to go!!!
I know his name was mentioned above, but I vote for Christopher Walken or Sandra Bullock.
damon waynes or or the boss from just shoot me
I'm saying it. Will Ferrell is not funny on the show.
WHO CARES>>>>
Catherine Tate and Ricky Gervais together? I have never watched The Office before but with definitely watch that episode! I do so hope she gets to say "Do I look bovvered?"
James Spader absolutely. He was beyond excellent in Boston Legal. If he's chosen, I'll start watching this show. Will Ferrell is an idiot. Anything he touches turns to crap. Having him come on board is an easy way for me to stay miles away from this show.
No no no! Jim carrey worst actor EVER! Gervais is the ONLY Michael Scott replacement, after all he is the ORIGINAL!!!! If not make Dwight and Jim co manage we all know that Saber ass runs the show... hmmm I bet we can drop him now though since Erin broke up with him! That was the best break up scene EVER! Epic
I would like to see Labron James or Homer Simpson as a guest star of The Office.
How about Sinbad...he's funny!
I love sinbad.. Yea he would be great!
The office is too amateurish of a role of JC. I personally think the show sucks. They just want a famous actor to boost their ratings. I say get rid of the show. It licks huge donkey nuts.
Bill Shatner!!!!
will arnett, most definitely. he's got that tough-and-stupid-on-the-outside-and-snuggly-on-the-inside thing down.
jim carrey is funny omg i would watch it!!!!!
Bruce McCulloch of KITH. He could do the dbag office mgr character well.
Spader would be an interesting choice! Jim Carrey is....unique? I'm not sure how that would work, though I do think he has a decent range of humor, so I'm sure he could make it work. But I haven't watched anything with Jim Carrey in it since....Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, so what do I know!
Catherine Tate would be amusing, but I've only seen her on her variety show and nothing else :-\
I won't watch the show as long as will ferrel is on it. Ferrel sucks as an actor. I've seen better acting at my brothers middle school plays. I'm fine with anyone other ferrel
Oh look at the melanoma-bait flyover set bashing the Italian. Screw you devolved, malady-prone sissies...we'll still be here when you're worm food.
James Spader hands down.he's hot, quirky, and yes definitely underated as an actor.I would love to see more of him!Throw in some Josh Blue too!
how bout orlando jones, larry miller, kelsy grammer or john lithgow.
I have been reading all of the suggestions for replacements, trying to think of the perfect one (Alec Baldwin, Stephen Colbert, etc) when you suggested the absolutely perfect replacement in your post..."Larry Miller"...watch him in "Best In Show" and the rest of that trilogy.... perfect solution you suggested 🙂
Dawn French (the vicar of Dibley) would be great, or Jennifer Saunders (Ab Fab), Bill Murray, or Catherine Tate.
Danny mcbride!!! Hands down the best choice... Think eastbound and down running the show at Dundee mifflin... And bring his lil midget sidekick too!!
What happened to Paul Reubens? He'd be the reason I'd stay tuned.
I've watched since the beginning. Great cast.
The show was getting tired, however, and Carrell was the reason.
His departure is the best sign for the show's rejuvenation and longevity.
Irish humor is the best! That's what makes Jim so funny. I love the guy.
charlie sheen.
the office sucks anyways. Watch office space the movie
Moon 627. Yea that's crazy , they did listen to u! I saw ur post
please not ray ramano, dont even put him in finale, he is horrible
Agreed. Ray romano has zero talent and should never be on tv again.
Gervais could handle this.
Will Carrey and a Farrell make a Carrell?
Catherine Tate would be phenominal. She is a great comedic actress and would be a perfect addition to thestaff.
I agree! That would be interesting!
Ray Romano!
Heck yeeah! Ray all the way I think he'd be perfect for the role.
I would watch this show if Jim Carrey starred on it. Will Ferrel is not funny
David Cross or Dave Chappelle! ... But of the actors listed definitely Ricky Gervais or Will Arnet.
Was just gonna write that Shart... glad im not the only one that noticed..
Charlie Sheen
This is one of the most STUPID shows on TV. Carell has absolutely no talent. This rates right down there with The Simpsons, Family guy and all those like that.
Someone sucked the comedy emotion from your brain? You need help.
LOL, this is all hilarious!! And btw, Jim Carrey was on In Living Color...NOT Mad TV. 😉 Hahahahaha!
It'd be great to have Ricky come on the show as the new boss, and then kill him off in the first episode.
They should hire Josh Blue, that comedian with cerebral palsy that was on Last Comic Standing. That guy is awesome. Carrey would do well, too. I never understood how Will Farrell made it as a comedian. He's not that funny.
Catherine Tate is hilarious! I think she would be perfect for the role. If anyone has seen Doctor Who, she has spunk and great comedic timing.
ohhhhh yah, James Spader
Will Ferrell is going to bring the office to an end....it needs to be jim carrey or my idea Steven Colbert
My vote would be jim carrey. But stephen colbert that is an awesome idea.....like it
Definitely JIM CARREY....He is so funny and awesome.
A long way of say "desperate attempt to halt ratings tailspin."
If you think shouting stupid things loudly is the height of comedy, you should root for Catherine Tate and watch that painful season of "Doctor Who."
Aww I really hoped it would be Ferrell staying on as the new office manager. Honestly I'm not sold on any of those other options except maybe Spader. Hope they choose rught or they will notice the ratings drop very quickly.
Carrey's teeth are too big for any public engagement, so say nothing of television.
Will Arnett would be the best choice, hands down. James Spader?!? Seriously?!?
P. Diddy. Funny as hell in Get Him To The Greek! Or Creed! #TeamCreedDiddy
I actually have been disappointed in Ferrels performance thus far; Carrey will be an awesome addition to the show!!!
seriously ray romano? gross!!! I would love to see a woman in charge, Portia de Rossi is amazing! I vote for her!
No contest...Spader for sure!
Jim Carrey was always at his best when doing comedy. When he gave it up and went psycho for being stapled as a funny man, his career tanked.
Anybody else want to see Murray from Flight of the Conchords as the new Regional Manager?
Ok, Office meeting! Jim? Present. Dwight? Present. Murray? Present!
Oh My God YYEEESSSSS!!! Murray would be AWESOME! "do you know what they call me? they call me ginga-balls...and it's very hurtful. they say "go away ginga-balls. ginga-balls"
Murray! Oh man, thanks for bringing that up. That would be hilarious!
agreeeeeed
That is the best suggestion yet. Holy crap that would be awesome. I would poop a Cornish game hen. "that was Brett...I thought that was your nickname...nooo" Classic.
Murray would be awesome, great pick!
Carey svcks, and hasnt been funny since MAD TV. Somewhere along the way he got the false idea that he is a good actor.
Really MADTV, you need to go back and watch the early 90's cause you just FAILED
Ray Romano would bring in a good crowd if yer lookin for the 80 to 100 year old demographic. Just think of all the adult diaper commercials they could get? Spader can play it anyway they want and still pull it off. Anyone that thinks Jim Carrey isn't funny doesn't know comedy. He has had some bad movies but he didn't write the screen plays which no one can fix after it hits the deadlines. It is physical comedy that he does folks not cerebral . He didn't get paid 20 mill a picture because no one went to see him!
Ray Romano is as funny as a wet fart. He sucks. I don't know why anyone thinks he's funny.
...or better yet Mother Theresa's wet fart.
uhh– the 100 million people that watch him every week.
Jim would be awesome!! But, he's too big of an actor – he would be hilarious!
get Romano out of there, for the love of god. This could have been an awesome lineup... bleh.
They'll probably put Romano in as Carrell's replacement since he's stupid and doesn't have anything going with his career at the moment.
Are you kidding me? Seriously? Romano has a pretty great show on TNT that he's pretty committed to. So yeah, he DOES have something going on in his career atm.
On a side note, since people don't read up the best, Gervais doesn't want a retread of the UK Office, so he is out as the replacement. Will Ferrell is awful to begin with. I don't know much of Spader's work. I would like to see Tate take over.
I'm sorry to see Steve Carell leaving. Neither Carey or Ferrell can replace him.
Carey will bring his (mellowed out) goofiness to the role. His best work was Dumb and Dumberer and then down hill after that.
Will Ferrelll will say alot of nonsense and remind us of how bad he was in Taledega Nights.
They're both aweful. They should put a black guy like Chris Tucker. Now that would be funny.
...or better yet Chris Rock.
I'm with Ted. Portia de Rossi's characer from Better Off Ted was beyond awesome. She would bring the oh-so-hilarious mean that the Office has been missing the past few seasons.
I was going to suggest her as well but you beat me to it. She's awesome!
This would be HORRIBLE. Jim Carrey is an idiot and ruins every movie he is in with over-exaggerated facial controtions and stupid speech patterns. Adding Jim Carrey would wreck The Office.
Watch Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind and then get back to me with that comment again. I guarentee you won't be saying the same thing.
Vicki, I EXTREMELY AGREE with you. I can't stand Jim Carey, and I just don't think I could stand to watch if he was on. I really like the idea of maybe having revolving guest stars in the role. That could be kind of fun. Something for everybody?
I want to see Burt Reynolds as the new boss.
this used to be my favorite comedy, and now it is just flat out of steam. i think it is hard for comedies to make it past 5 seasons. it's been downhill since Jan left, because there has been no way to grab that uncomfortable, dark comedy that set the show apart. like Archie Bunker in All in the Family, the writers felt compelled to make Michael more sympathetic, and then the show got less interesting. the dinner party was the peak.
NO..............not at all. There's Cheers, Mash, Three's Company, and Seinfeld.
Portia de Rossi should be the next boss. If they can reproduce her character from Better Off Ted, then this should would be epic
Danny mcbride would be the best. Probably more affordable too than these big names too.
Will Farrell, hands down. He's made for this part.
Actually Spader would be excellent as a straight-laced boss in the way the black guy Charles was. Carey might dominate the show, i think Will Ferrell might be a better fit.
Incidentally, my favorite episode ever was the Willy Wonka one, the one with the Golden Tickets. hysterical
Just saw that one! Awesome! My fave is the one where they are teaching CPR and Dwight cuts the face off of the dummy and puts it on his own! LMAO!!! Schrute for Prez! Seriously, though, I am a huge Will Ferrell fan, but am kind of leaning towards Spade as the replacement. I think the dynamic between him and Dwight would be a show in itself!!!
Spader gets my vote. Quirky, funny...just right!
OMG it must be Jim Carey...he's the best!
Creed for regional manager!
Haha. Damn, if Creed was regional manager he would last one day, he'll come in one day steal everything and leave.
all in favor say 'aye'
'aye'
Ace Ventura: Office Manager!
I'd love to see Will Arnett step into the role. He was amazing in Arrested Development, and I think the character he played in that show George Oscar Bluth could be a flawless transition across sitcom medium. I'd love to see Jim Carrey take it over, but I'm sure he'd take too much of the spotlight off the other characters in the show. I do not want Will Ferrell...loved him on SNL, but just not enough substance or versatility to cover the spectrum of the show.
Yes, give Will Arnett the "GOB" he would be amazing on that show, although he might be a bit too much like Andy.
I've never seen Arested Development but did you ever watch 30 Rock? He's so freaking hilarious. Whenever he's on in my opinion he takes the spotlight...modestly.
Definitely John Lithgow would be the best replacement if they want the show to run a few more seasons. If they just want to end it after next season, perhaps either David Spade or Ted McGinley!
Ted McGinley! Embrace the shark.
Actually the show that could completely pull off the mcginley switch is Community. I could totally see mcginley replacing chevy chase for an episode.
As a fan of the British version I'd love to see Ricky Gervais reprise a role as the office manager! Long live David Brent!!
YES
YES!!!!!!!!! David Brent is almost too much to hope for. 🙂 I miss him!
What about Luke Perry?
A Jim Carrey character seems like the exact right thing to make a Ferrell character hilariously uncomfortable. I don't typically watch that show, but I'd probably watch that.
I like Will Ferrell but he's probably too big of an actor. Spader sounds good tho!
Oh man, Jim Carrey on The Office would be a dream come true. But I'm sure he has bigger projects in the works that will prevent him from being on the show long term.
...didn't hear Chris Rock's name mentioned as a possible replacement or must it be a white actor?
gimme a break....
you are a moron. not everything is about race. and no, i'm not white.
And why must it be a black actor? Grow up!
there are no black in scranton, except for stanley and darryl
Seriously xanatos? WHy does this have to be a racial issue....and anyway...Chris Rock? You seriously think Chris Rock should be considered? ANd I am thinking from the character and show overall...Chris Rock? Get over yourself moron!
Good comment xanantos. These other replies are so critical...............shut up you all.
I think they're looking for someone funny
The network stipulated that it not be a black actor because they did not think they could credibly feature a black person in a respectable job, even a fictional one. However, they stated there would be plenty of openings for blacks in another series: The Prison 😉 (sarcasm!!)
Nancy is a racist. (sarcasm?)
Good Call. Chris Rock would be a great replacement.
adamB. You need to decide whether you are being sarcastic or not. Look up the term first. It implies that you are not accurately representing your sentiments. Anyway, don't strain any neurons over this. You can get back to me when you've had some time to mull it over.
The only plausible black replacement would be J.B. Smoove. But he's already on Curb Your Enthusiasm and the acting would be too similar.
Right...it's always about race...you ever think Chris Rock just isn't funny? Who wants to watch a man complain about racism for a half hour every week? Not me...
All of the choices except Catherine Tate would be safe choices, and would be disastrous for the show. Anyone who have seen The Catherine Tate Show on BBCA would tell you that she would be perfect to take the show in whatever direction it needs to go to get beyond Steve Carrell's leaving. It is always difficult when such a pivotal cast member leaves and trying to replace that person in a similar way has always failed. I hope the producers get it, and hire Catherine Tate because then I'd have a reason to tune in every week.
Of all the names getting batted about, Catherine Tate is my favorite too! Talk about wicked funny!
Jim Carrey is "crazy funny"! In one of the pet detective movies I lmao when the hippo gave "birth" to him! Many other funny movies, also. Can't speak for the office, never watched it. Hope you office watchers get who/what you want !
Wasn't it a Rhino?
Yours is the most inane post in the history of the internet. Congratulations. You win the infinite disdain of anyone reading it.
It was a Rhino. Infinite disdain is reserved for trolls.
I thought John Lithgow was the best choice to replace Steve Carell, untill I heard them say James Spader. He is one of the most gifted actors and completly underrated. I agree with Destonia he will not overpower the rest of the actors he is a perfect choice
Spader.. He is strong enough to come in and add to the show but let the other actors be part of the ensemble.. Cant see that happening with Carrey or Ramano.. And I don't think Ricky Gervais wants to be on US show long-term..
Catherine Tate, without a doubt! talk about shaking things up!
I'd love to see Catherine in that role, but will she be available for taping when she is going to be starring in a play, Much Ado About Nothing, with David Tennant, in England, this June through September?
Totally agree!
"The Catherine Tate Show" is fantastic. Catherine Tate is everything that Tracey Ullman was and could never be.
However, I disagree with you. Bringing Chachi in on Happy Days to pal around with the lifelong bachelor Fonzie, shook things up a bit. Bobby Ewing's death season on "Dallas" turning out to be a dream, shook things up a bit. Catherine Tate on "The Office" would only shake things up in a Shaken Baby Syndrome sort of way and end what we know and love as, "The Office". It wouldn't work.
Forever correct-a-mundo,
-The Man
James Spader is my choice. Most of the others are just too over the top. Spader has just enough "weird" about him to make this a real success.
Please do not put Romano on there. He's not funny at all. I can't stand him. If he gets put on, I will not watch the show.
Totally agree with you. Spader hands down. He can handle being in a scene with anyone and still find a way to make it his own, without stealing anything from anyone. If he can handle William Shatner in Boston Legal, he can handle anything.
Oprah doesnt like Ray because hes white.
As much as I love Spader, all I can see when I try to picture him is Alan Shore or his character from Secretary (Basically Alan Shore x 10). I just can't see his dark+weird humor on The Office. He's just too subtle and perverse. Maybe he can pull it off, but I think he's just too typecast to be a good fit.
I hate Romano.
ABSOLUTELY, James Spader has it all!!!!! He would be the perfect fit.
Anyone who saw and was a fan of Spader on Boston Legal should be a fan of him going to The Office. He has the perfect dry comedy talents for that role and clearly can be a solid cog in an ensemble cast based on that show. If not for Shatner's performance in Boston Legal, Spader would have been the star of that show, and that is essentially what Steve Carell had become.
I'm down with Carrey and Ferrell. Spader, not so much. Romano? Nooooooooooooooo!!!!
seriously ? wow ! they took my advice ! check it out – i commented on Will Farrell's performance and said they should make Jim Carey a candidate for the job and here he is. AWESOME 🙂
I saw your post that said that! 🙂
tcaros: Grump grump grump. Grumpy grump grump.
@tcaros Go watch 'I love you Philip Morris.' Jim Carrey is far from washed up.
Ozzy, you'd best go back to tending to your leaky catheter. Sharon's too while you're at it.
Gervais or Spader are better at delivering serious character, edgey comedy, I believe. Carrey's physical comedy is brilliant but he couldn't really use it well here. Same with Ferrell.
I love Jim Carey. He's hillarious.
Careyyyyy! By far
Keep WILLY ...!
Ferell is awesome at what was needed – a funny straight man!
Talented Will
Well Jim Carrey is my favorite actor of all time, but Ferrell and Romano are both funny as well. Spader is cool.
Romano is so annoying. Carey or Ferrell
I saw your post too. Thats awesome!
Jim Carrey would be hilarious!
@The Man
Pretty sure Jim Carey got his major break in....wait for it....an ensemble sketch comedy show called In Living Color. Noth that I think Carey will stay on the show....I just want to point out that your entire premise is flawed.
DREW Carrey. I never considered him until seeing this article thinking Drew Carrey not Jim would be on the Office, I originally thought "genius, hes perfect" but then I saw they were talking about Jim.
It will never happen but Conan Obrien would be amazing as his replacement!
Dear Hjs,
A couple of quick points. "In Living Color" was about 20 years ago. JC's career has evolved just a little bit since then. I assumed we were all familiar with his history. Before "I.L.C." he was in a short lived sitcom called "The Duck Factory". It was really too short lived and too early in his career to judge his talents back then.
One thing is for sure though. That little "wait for it" bit that you threw in there... Man, that was genius. Comedy gold my friend. I'm not sure which I like better. It's a three way tie between how clever it was, how witty it was and how original it was. It's a tough call but I must say – Well done, my man. Well done! I know when I've been jabbed. "Ouch!"
Forever wanting to be as clever as Hjs,
-The Man
The Man
You are obviously more intelligent than I anticipated. I never expected you to pick up on my comedy gold.
While you "assumed we were all familiar with his history", you also said " Jim Carrey is a "spotlight" lead actor. He's not an ensemble cast actor. He would not gel with the rest of the cast as a whole."
These two statements are clearly in disagreement with one another. I understand that my cleverness caught you off guard and you perhaps missed your own contradiction.
Carey is a genius "spotlight" actor and comedian. He was also a genius member of an ensemble cast. I bring up that show, because the previous one you mentioned was not a success, was not what gave him his big break, and not what he is remembered for. You can see pieces of that show in virtually all of his comedy roles. It's his more serious roles (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Truman Show, Man on the Moon) that demonstrate to me why he should not take this role. Not because he could not, which is preposterous, but that he should not. He is simply better than the role. Carell is leaving because he is better than the role. Candidates like Will Ferrel, while funny, are not better than the role. If Will Arnett gets the role, I will have no choice but to no longer watch the show, as his failed TV show is pretty much the extent of his talent already.
Dave chappele would be a good choice too. That is if he came out of retirement.
All of this because Steve Carroll left the show. WOW! That vindicated him how important he is to the shows relevance and now the execs are spending big money to save the show...That's huge!........THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID! Sorry:)
I want to see chris rock.
JIm Carrey is a no-count, untalented actor – his routines are NOT funny. What a loser.
It would be fun to see Zach galifinakis as Michael Scotts replacement but I can imagine how busy someone like him would be with other projects.
Will Ferrell is NOT funny. I repeat: NOT FUNNY.
That is all.
I am officially unclear of what point you’re trying to get across anymore. What I think I can piece together though is that we’re kind of on the same page, however you’re fighting it for some reason. I think, I’m not positive, but I think the reason is that you’re on a quest to “out-do” me here. That’s cool and all but let it be known, you’re in a race all by yourself on this one.
"Jim Carrey is a "spotlight" lead actor. He's not an ensemble cast actor. He would not gel with the rest of the cast as a whole." – How do these statements disagree with one another? They’re pointing out the same thing.
Let me try to dislodge whatever it is that’s jamming up your gears. My basic point is this: Now, in 2011, Jim Carrey of “In Living Color” fame has achieved many accomplishments over his 20+ year career. In that time he has made his undeniable mark in comedy both on screen and television. Whether it was physical comedy or dramatic comedy, he has honed his comedic skills and is truly a great comedic artist. As his career evolved, he has also made a name for himself as a dramatic actor, albeit he sometimes can be lesser known for this work. Regarding his comedy work though, Jim Carrey has, in my opinion, what I would describe as an “all-eyes-on-me” style. It would also be my opinion that this larger than life persona may just be too big for something like “The Office” and it would just not be a good fit.
Forever speaking as slowly and clearly as possible as so I am not misunderstood by some,
-The Man
If Will Ferrell is not funny to someone by the name of "FunnyGirl", then I'm dying to know who is funny to someone named "FunnyGirl".
Forever looking for the funny,
-The Man
@HJS & The Man
Can there ever be an argument about what Jim Carrey can or cannot do? The only thing he can't do, in my opinion, is win an oscar. He's done everything else. Supervillains, everymen, meek, obnoxius, psychotic, and mostly endearing. I don't think he's required to prove anything. The problem might be is that he's being asked to replace a beloved character. But didn't Carell and Carrey already face off in "Bruce Almighty"? He didn't outshine Carell enough to keep Carell from becoming the star of the sequel. The sequel wasn't as succesful and, surely, replacing the most beloved aspect of the American version of "The Office" will also be unlikely to generate the same affection. I mean, regardless of how succesful and loved Ricky Gervais was, even he probably wouldn't get the same response as Carell in America.
