Kanye West cries during Coachella set

"This is the most important show to me since my mom passed," Kanye West revealed, as a hush fell over the capacity crowd on closing night of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

In the middle of a powerful hits-filled set that also featured cuts off his current album, "My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy," the 33-year-old hip-hop superstar suddenly had a confessional moment.

"When I made the album, I was in a really dark place in my life...losing everything that was dear to me," he told the audience from center stage. "To still love me after everything you've seen me say on TV...to still have fans...I really appreciate you all tonight, because I'm only trying to say and do what's right."

"I'm not the best singer in the world," West continued, before talking about how it was the most authentic way for him to convey his feelings. "So many times I thought about not being here, but you make it all worth it."

If there's one thing Kanye West knows how to do, it's put on a dramatic show. In fact, he started the program by riding a giant mechanical arm high above the crowd. It deposited him on stage, where he was joined by a couple dozen dancers, who helped him illustrate his fall from grace and subsequent "re-birth."

Although artists he's collaborated with - like Rihanna and Katy Perry - had been spotted at Coachella over the weekend, West chose to go the solo route, tearing through his ample arsenal of hits from every phase of his career. He performed 27 songs, including "Jesus Walks," "Love Lockdown," "Heartless," "Gold Digger," "Stronger," and his recent tongue-in-cheek single, "Runaway" (which had the audience singing along to the lyrics, "Let's have a toast for the scumbags").

There were lots of fireworks, and the multitude of ballerinas and avant-garde dancers made the set feel like a piece of performance art at times - purposely discordant and unsettling. But the most poignant moments were when West was on the stage by himself, baring his soul to the full moon, the desert stars and 75,000 or so festival-goers.

His face was wet with tears when he finished his last song, "Hey Mama." Donda West died tragically in 2007 due to complications from cosmetic surgery. She was 58 - a former college professor who was also instrumental in guiding her son's career.

"This show is dedicated to you, Mama," were the last words out of West's mouth before he left the stage.

There was no encore.

Aww poor Kanye sobbing like a little at his concert. Too bad Taylor Swift wasn't there to jump up on stage and mock him.

Kanye West is Very talented, although he comes off arrogant and harsh. He is an amazing artist and even better performer. I caught The Coachella Performance Via WEbcast on Youtube (thanks 5gum) and It was one of the best performances I ever seen and this is coming from a frequent Concert Go-er(Lolla, Coachella, Bonnaroo and Glastobury) He does act like Kid and Brat at times, but He is making himself into an artist that will be talked about for a long time.

Kanye is a great young artist, who needs to really think before he speaks.

I think he means well, but doesn't or can't find or use the correct tone, emotion, or words to get his point across, without sounding like a baffoon.

Kanye should team up with Chris Brown in some skooling on speaking, and actually sounding smart or having a point to get across.

However, we must all remember that although we are not all in the spot-light: we all have areas in our lives that need some correction & maintaining... Yes, it was unfortunate what Happened to Ms. Swift and disturbing to think that Mr. West reacted the way he did. He is not the first perp, unfortunatly there will be more celeb victims. kanye sucks just like most of the non talented so called artists in the rap world. so they can rhyme ebonics and steal music from when mainstream music actually had ppl who could perform live with instruments without singing through a computer to alter their voice. kanye is a bigot also. trying to b some new age malcom x. in history the less civilized races however unfortunate were subjected to slavery NOT just the blacks. and not every white europian race was involved in the slave trade. which i might add wasnt a commando operation where they just went to africa and took them by force. coffee, sugar, and other unknown commodities were used to barter for the unwanted. true their treatment was inhumane and brutal but that was a different time and politics was religion and religion is behind most if not all of conflicts of that time and prior. sorry kanye if im not moved by ur crocodile tears. i dont respect u in the least and ur time in the sun is comming to a close. your nothing special and your political rhetoric will be your downfall. you will be just another mc hammer. Dear Sue: I BELIEVE IN MIRACLES. I have faith that Ryan will wake up, and that all the hard work that Ken is doing in keeping his body in shape will pay off tmloendrusey. God hears our prayers. We don't know His timing or His exact plan. But we can have REAL HOPE. We do have to patiently listen to the lessons He is teaching us while we wait. I have to believe that out of this horrible tragedy good things MUST come. If ONE person who follow Ryan's story decides to back away from a fight instead of give in to their madness and hurt someone. If ONE person facing a brain injury gains some faith because of YOUR faithfulness in working with and loving Ryan. If the new treatments that will start help ONE other person, if ONE person has hope in the face of tragedy because of all that you pour out of your heart, it gives me a piece of joy. You are a spectacular mother setting a perfect example of what Moms do for their children. You are in my prayers every single day. Keep up the fight!

Keep hating on a man who showed a little emotion, real big of you all. Oh yeah, you hate him because he fulfilled his dreams and is living up to his potential while most of you are working 9-5, forgot what your dreams even were, and living to make your boss wealthy while you live check to check. So get some rest, tomorrow will be an early day and you better clock in on time or who knows what your fate may be. As far as Kanye, he'll be sleeping late on a pile of money and, oh yeah, he won't be clocking in unless HE wants to. Now, back to your pathetic lives, wow.

Montoya:Based on my experience with OccupyBoston, you are alsbluteoy right about how COINTELPRO has completely subverted and crippled these movements.Do ya'all wonder why there are no demands yet? They have set it up so that 10% can veto anything and they keep the late night discussions going so freakin' long that 3 hours later (for a simple anti-war / bring our troops home demand'), 70-80% of the crowd has left, such that by then a dozen people are enough to block the motion for absurd procedural reasons.I tried to get involved in the canvassing, to help convince more people to revolt, and they basically censored what I could say: my own reasons for revolt (systematic child molestation, involving even GHW Bush, as evidenced by the banned movie Conspiracy of Silence ) were not acceptable to them: I was only allowed to talk about milquetoast leftist reasons. Can you imagine? A supposedly hard-core protest movement that helps the government censor explosive information. To add insult to injury, I'm told that I need to get the grossly dysfunctional General Assembly to validate my canvassing script, even though others don't need to If that BS assembly can't vote to demand an end to the wars, then they surely can't vote on something more complex like my canvassing script and its related banned movie.Well, I'm not giving up the fight, regardless: I still support OWS and its related sites, just like I support what's left of the legitimate Tea Party movement, but I'll spend my energies fighting this vile system of ours in other projects, since these ones have clearly been set up to fail miserably. I hope that outsiders will treat them with a bit of sympathy and pity: it's not easy dealing with the well coordinated actions of professional counter-insurgents

You think you're awesome- you are.
You think others are awful- they are.
    Your ego is REFRESHING.
Your rock-star persona- something the world has been missing since the 70s.

I can't understand how upset people are at Kanye. ... MJ (someone that i LOVE) quite possibly molested children. Chris Brown beat his girlfriend. R. KELLY peed on a minor! Kanye got drunk and interrupted the least important award show on tv... how is he so awful, again?

and, for the record, GEORGE BUSH DOESN'T CARE ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE!

I like his music, he's a extremely talented artist. He lost his track after his mother death, is obvious he feels the loneliness after the lost of the one person who loves for who you are as a human being not because his money and celebrity status. Is my opinion his past erratic behavior is due to extreme sense of pain and loneliness, he needs to find true love to recover his confidence. Looks like he is on his way to be a better person.

U all are irrelevant idiots. Kanye is an great artist. He's original, lyrically versatile, and his last two albums proves that. Even if your not a Kanye fan you have no right to judge his personal life.None of us can judge his character because none of us know him.People tend to 4get that.We don't know any of these celebs so why judge?

I bet you didn't even watch the VMAs. The rest of your complaints can almost be said of any celebrity. Kanye may have some issues, but he's nowhere near the point where he would even need a "second chance"

You make good points Superhiro. I am not on here to argue for the sake of arguing. I obviously do not like Kanye as a person very much......but believe me, about half of his songs get me out my seat. My problem with him is that he is very disrespectful......and he doesnt seem to have any consequences. And I understand this is a common theme among artists, actors, socialites, reality stars, the wealthy, etc. They think they are invincible. Breaking the law and getting away with it is almost more acceptable in my mind, because like it or not, money controls everything and you can "buy" judges......but when you are a public assh*le, and people still love you......something is wrong. Just trying to promote social order here, Superhiro.

Ok man, I can understand where you're coming from, but what I don't get is why Kanye when there's so many other obvious targets out there? Honestly? Kanye's not that bad. He's outspoken, has no manners and he's arrogant, but at least he doesn't say... beat his girlfriend like Chris Brown. I mean my point is just that there should be like 100 other celebrities on your list to complain about before you actually get to Kanye West.

I agree totally. And they ARE on my list. I just happened to catch this article and thought i would drop a note on it. And just to clarify (not that it matters)......I have a daughter and just wish the most famous people out there, that she will inevitably clutter her room with posters of, were more responsible. High hopes......and I cant even imagine what my southern white dad thought, of my huge Cypress Hill sticker on the back of my windshield when I was 16. Vicious cycle.

I do not really make it a regular habit of doing that. Second, whilst I can easily see the leaps in reason you come up with, I am definitely not confident of just how you seem to connect the ideas which inturn help to make the final result. For now I shall subscribe to your position however trust in the near future you connect the facts better.

No Ash, I am referring to a man who abuses his fame. He calls the leader of his free world a racist, he disrupts live awards shows because he kisses Jay Z's a**, he is a public drunk, he disrespects females, he treats people "lower" than him as if they were dirt, and then he goes on stage and acts as if he cares. He is a spectacular entertainer......but an immature man. We all go through tough times.....and most of us change because of them. Why does he get 20 second chances? Oh thats right.....because he is a pop star.

      April 18, 2011 at 6:23 pm | Report abuse |
    • Ash

Kanye West was going through a tough time due to the recent death of his mother and called off engagement with his fiancé. Going through all that and being a "famous popstar" isn't easy either. As a human, I figuered you would understand that. I'm not making excuses for all of his comments, though. I also don't know what you're referring to when you say "he treats people lower than him" like dirt. And why can't we give him a chance to change? Because he's a famous pop star? I'm just saying, I don't think he is a bad person.
