'Idol' Top 8 gave it their all

There is so much talent this season.

Even the weak links on "Idol" are still pretty entertaining, and I think it's just going to get harder and harder each week to determine who America will be sending home.

This week, we had just about all of the genres represented from jazz to heavy metal, and I won't even begin to speculate who will end up in the bottom three.

All in all, I liked the movie-themed night, though I must admit that a few of the contestants messed me up with their insistence in bucking the mentor's advice. Will that come back and haunt them Thursday night during the results show?

That remains to be seen, and I can't wait. Who did you thing was great in the Top 8 and who did you hate?

Sound off!

My bottom three are Haley, Paul and Scotty. I totally agreed with Randy regarding Haley. Her performance was very karioke & the song wasn't right for her. OK, granted I only caught a little bit of Paul's performance but what I did see was freaky and his outfit was louder than him. Scotty...I mean come on...he sings well but I don't see what is so out-of-the-ordinary with this kid. His whole presentation on stage is so hokey and i'm just not seeing the "wow" factor.

Hayley should stay. She has guts, owns the stage, versatility and is exciting to watch. Lauren may have a better voice bit is not exciting to watch. In a few years she will be dynamite. Jacob may be able to sing but is a horrible performer and his voice is just too womanly. Steffano is okay, but kind of boring. Paul I am sorry to say is very limited in his abilities. Time to go. Scotty is good and their are enough country fans for him to stay even if he doesn't win and he'll still be a star, at least in the south. I think he appeals more to women due to the cuteness factor. Can't wait to see him in a few years when he is more seasoned. Casey still does not have a strong enough performance, no real wow factor, even though he is so talented. James is a great performer nad could possibly be the next Idol. Bottom three:
    Paul, Casey, Jacob.

Jacob's stage presences is HORRIBLE – for a guy – AND womanly...so it just dawned on me...if Pia could have copied Jacob's stage mannerisms, dramatic and womanly, Pia would have won. (except for the outrageous butt and hip thrusting he did the other week – which was ironic given why he changed his song choice that week)

My bottom three choices: James, Paul, Stefano. James needs more experience. Currently he comes off like a high school kid with passion but without the instincts. Paul just hasn't lived up to early potential and his song choice last night was lame and safe. Stefano good voice, but kinda boring.

Casey???? I don't understand why so many people think he's so fabulous! Sure, I give him props for originality and having the guts to do different things BUT, if your going to do that, you had better be technically perfect. He is not by a lot! His vocals were all over the place last night! SOOOOO pitchy and uneven....It's really time he goes! Bottom three....Casey, Paul and Haley

This is all so funny. Casey is by far the least talented of the bunch (is he grunting just because he's constipated or is there something more?) and no matter how he pretends to play the base, he just is pathetic. Here's how the popularity contest will go: The big headed kid with the deep voice will win. HE WEARS THE CROSS EVERY WEEK SO THAT WHEN THE PEOPLE IN iOWA GET OUT OF THEIR MEGACHURCHES ON sUNDAY, THEY KNOW WHO TO MAKE THEIR SIGNS FOR. HE HAS A RANGE SMALLER THAN CHER'S, SO IT DOESN'T TAX THE LISTENING ABILITY OF THE TRAILER PEOPLE DOWN SOUTH. AND THE FAT SQUARE STATE TEA PARTY LADIES CAN;'T WAIT TO THROW THEIR UNDERWEAR AT HIM. AND HE'S SO NONTHREATENINGLY GAWKY THSAT YOUR TWEENAGE DAUGHTER THINKS HE'S CUTE.

Well at least they didn't sing all the other movie songs that have been done everyother season, but no one really impressed me last night.

Paul- "Old Time Rock & Roll" – sounded "off" from the band/sound. More sound problems with AI? Not bad – but I wasn't wowed. There are very few songs that suit Paul's voice – this was on the borderline.

Lauren – "Its the Climb" – yes she sounded better than Mylie. But she also sounded "off" from the band. Was she purposely a beat behind the backup singers? (again – sound problem?) Also, not bad, but not wowed.

Stefano – "End of the Road" – bleh – same old boring Stefano – no energy – just a lot of pleading looks when he sings.

Scotty – "Across My Heart" – ENUNUCIATE!! – he faded at the end of EVERY line. besides that it wasn't bad.

Casey – "Nature Boy" – never heard it before. Props to Casey for doing something original and not looking like an idiot like Naima. Very Jazzy – very gutsy. I liked it, but it was so different from the rest of the night, it may cost him. But I hope not.

Haley – "Call Me" – it was okay, nothing special. Agree with Randy that this was the wrong song choice. That song should not be done on Idol, it just doesn't come across well on TV and will always sound like karoke – no matter who sings it.

Jacob – "Bridge Over Troubled Water" – this song was on Glee last week, done in a gospel manner and was 100 times better. Jocab's version was just bleh – and he needs to ENUNCIATE as well!!! You literally couldn't understand about every other line because of his lack of enunciation – which is odd given is overly dramatic facial expressions. And this guy is just to annoying to watch on stage. His stage work is horrible – way too dramatic. He can do local musical theater when he's done on Idol.

James – "Heavy Metal" – bleh. Same metal screeching that he's done every other week. Nothing special with this guy – at all. He just reminds me of the many guys playing air guitar and doing heavy metal karoke after a couple of drinks.

The only people I see making succesfull albums are Casey, Lauren, and Scotty. Casey has some cool originality if can just get the right coach. Lauren has a wide range and I could see her crossing between pop and country – if she gets some good songs. And Scotty will be pure country with that voice – or he'll be a great radio anouncer. Everyone else: Bleh.

I don't know why everyone was so shocked that Pia got the boot. She isn't a performer, she's a singer. Yes she has a good voice, but it's a studio voice. She'll sell records no doubt, but imagine her in concert – boring! If you're going to do a Tina Turner song you don't have to dance like Tina, but at least move to the music. She walked thru it. Remember when Taylor Hicks won? He wasn't the best singer. Kat McPhee and Elliott Yamin who placed 2nd and 3rd had better voices but Taylor had charisma, personality and he owned the staged. People don't realize that there is a visual component. Casey is the most talented, James is good (but a generic Adam Lambert). Bottom 3 should be Stefano, Jacob or Scotty and Haley. Casey is in a league of his own, in the best way possible. That's why Randy said, "I hope America gets it", because most of the viewers have no idea how talented and innovative he is. And he proved he can take any genre from jazz to grunge to r & b and own it and make it interesting. Just like Lambert. I couldn't wait to see what he was going to do each week and that's how I feel about Casey.

When Paul sings, the melody is so distorted that you don't even know what it is he is supposedly singing. And yes, he's real clumsy and does not know how to move on stage. Better he stand still than look like he's having some kind of fit.

Lauren is young and very talented with star potential. (Carrie Underwood like.)
Paul needs to sing softer songs like James Blunt "Beautiful" he is a stylized singer but won't win.
Jacob has great pipes but is too dramatic. Every time he sings I feel like I'm in church. (not matter what song.0
Casey has a cool jazzy sound but needs to ease up on the grunts and focus on a smoother delivery
Haley has to go period. The growling in every song is overdone and she can't hold a note to save her life
Stefano has mad talent. With the right material he will do well.
Scotty – County Crooner – sounds good but has no diversity. He will sell records but he won't last long.
James is a great performer. I did enjoy the softer side of him a couple of weeks ago. Looking for more from him.

Bottom 3 Haley, Paul, Jacob. Haley please go home.

Ok, personally I think Paul sucked. However, I just don't like the voice. Lauren was good, not great. Nothing spectacular there. Stefano may have staved off elimination for another week, amazingly. I'm so sick of Scotty's voice, just personal opinion. Every song sounds the same. I don't really "get" Jazz, but to each their own. Not Casey's best performance. Haley was OK. I thought Jacob was pretty good. Not as spectacular as some think he is. I admit I'm a Rock fan and really liked James' performance. To me, bottom 3 should be Scotty, Paul and Haley.

Each week Casey and Paul get worse instead of better. They should not have made the top 50. Though I am not and never have been a heavy metal fan, I thought James did an exceptional job on the Sammy Hagar song and I really enjoyed it. Stefano and Jacob were also very good last night. But of those remaining, Scotty is the best. Nice clear voice and sincere, laid back personality. There are enough kooks in the entertainment industry. Scotty is a much needed and welcome change.

Yet Scotty will appeal mostly to country music fans. He's not the most versatile of the contestants. Scotty can only sing country. On motown night, he did country. He seems like a nice guy but I couldn't sit listening to him for two hours.

I don't understand why you guys bash Paul and Stephano so much, and yet praise other people that constantly do the same type of performances every time they sing. Example you guys cry about Pia being gone, the girl cannot dance, would you really be willing to sit thru one of her concerts for two hours listening to ballads that whole time, and Jacob he looks like he's crying when he sings = Annoying, and please come out of the closet. In my opinion again my personal opinion the last two girls and Casey should be in the bottom three tonight, and I say this about Casey only because last night he did not perform for the youth, which is the majority of the voters, lots of these voters don't know much about Jazz, however one of the girls should go tonight, again my opinion you have the right to your own so please if you have a negative comment about my opinion, why don't you shove it up your Bunhole.

Jimmy Iovine was right on time in telling Jacob to back off the preachy. I don't think for a minute Jacob intended to alienate people but there is no question he came off as arrogant last week. It hurt him badly. Anyone remember Mandisa's downfall on the show?
Scotty has the Granny vote, but should pick a song that people can relate to. He's not standing out anymore.
Stefano has all the little girls swooning. He's way more connected to his performance of a song than to the song itself.
I can't even watch Paul (although I love him on the radio with his band, The Grand Magnolias)
Lauren is the love child of Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson–could win it. She's the most malleable of contestants.
Haley is not picking songs that showcase her stellar vocal–she's buying into the I-gotta-growl-like-Janis thing
James is really talented, and won't win, but may tour with Queen or something.
Casey is the musical technician of the group-props for calling out Esperanza Spalding–but really needs to quit ending every single phrase with a grunt and crazy eyes. Every single phrase.
I hope Jacob survives his "Mandisa Moment"; we'll see after tonight.
My picks for bottom 3: Haley, Paul, Jacob.

I had never watched AI before and was drawn in by the new judges and overall I have loved this season. I couldn't beleive it when I found myself voting for the first time last night. I LOVE Casey and Haley and started to appreciate James last night when he took the risk to do metal. I usually love Paul but was dissappionted with his song choice last night. Pia was incredibly boring and reminded me of Miss America Pagents from the early 90s with even the same song choices. Lauren is boring but there is a place for her as a country Miley Cyrus and she will do well. As much as I can't stand country Scotty is starting to convert me. Bottem three will be Stefano, Jacob, and Paul with Stefano finally going home. Casey, Paul, Haley and James are bringing out a new AI audience and no I am not a teeny bopper but an adult who appreciates good music. Times are changing and playing it safe and cookie cutter aren't going to cut it anymore.

Man, this is a tough one! Nobody was bad, per se. It's going to get harder and harder as weeks go on. Scotty should have stuck to the song suggested by the mentors. I think it would have given him a little variation without straying too far from his comfort zone. He's in danger of having all of his music start to sound alike. "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" was a great choice for Jacob, again, just a little variation without straying too far. I liked Casey doing "Nature Boy" with the upright bass. The judges got it, but I'm not so sure AI's majority young teenage girl audience got it. I think that performance was a little too sophisticated for that audience, and I don't know if that will hurt him or not. (This is coming from a 40 something jazz aficionado, so take what I say with a grain of salt.) I agreed with the judges about Haley's song choice. It really didn't showcase her voice. She's got such a special quality to her voice, and she should play that up. That's her selling point.

For those bashing James – you've obviously never ever had to deal with someone that has an illness have you??

Pia should never have gone home, but for those of you who can't figure out WHY Paul is still there, go take a gander at VoteforTheWorst.com – they're totally manipulating the votes and in my opinion, should be sued by AI for the vote manipulations. They vote for Paul every week, which is why he's still there. (Next I think they lined up Casey or Stephano to be voted for if Paul goes).

Paul and Casey need to go, and Stephano too. I liked Stephano at first but he's far too predictable – ballads every week, and it's getting boring (as they claimed it was with Pia – but at least she always was on key!)

Casey has the voice, but I'm not a jazz fan in any way, and it annoys me the looks Casey makes with certain songs (as he tries to growl something).

Paul sounded like Rod Stewart and I didn't mind him 'at first' , but he's definitely not top 5 material at all.

Hailey – love her husky voice, but sometimes she's a little shaky or off-key when she's nervous.

Lauren – love love love her voice!

I really like James too but sometimes he's over the top (and starting to sound like Adam Lambert more and more... not the best thing).

Scotty totally makes a country star.

My favorite was Pia, but now I'm routing for Lauren or James.

Hopefully Paul, Casey and Stephano go (for the next 3 weeks!)

I don't think Pia would be pleased to hear her fans putting down the other AI contestants. Don't take it out on the others. Their fans voted like mad and Pia's fans didn't vote enough. Just remember Chris Daughtry and Jennifer Hudson. Their early departures made them more famous after AI. Pia will be one of the contestants that does well after AI.

Scotty is a true talent. Both my teenage daughter and I have downloaded all of his songs and can't wait for his first CD. I haven't watched AI in previous seasons and only tuned in randomly this season as they were selecting the top 13. Then I heard Scotty sing and was floored. Have been watching ever since and voting. "The River" was one of the best performances I have seen. I go back to watch the video often. He seems to really feel the songs he sings and conveys how he feels. Also, as my daughter says, "He is so cute! Those blue eyes...the smile...but mostly, the voice." Haven't heard someone convey emotion in a song as well as Scotty since Elvis did it. Scotty also has Elvis' "little boy charm."

Tonight was amazing filled with the best talent in years. Have to give a shout out to Casey for a risky but truly artful performance. Way to remind us what good music sounds like. However I think my favorite for the night has to go to James. I hate heavy metal like it was the plague but tonight I became a heavy metal fan (only for one night though). He had me jumping up and down like I was watching a concert, I was so sad when he was finished. Also have to say that Lauren slayed that Miley Cyrus song. While I love all the contestants I have to pick a bottom three. Haley because I felt that she was a bit off with the song and really didnt bring it like I know she can. Paul because I think he is now out of his league vocally. Jacob because he has an amazing voice but completely overdoes it. If Jacob would reign it in a bit and work on control and the tender quality of his voice it would make his powerful notes more impressive. Right now I feel like he's missing an opportunity to show off his insane vocal chops.

I've hated the addition of Jimmy Iovine and even more so, will.i.am – they are a waste of airtime, and I cheer when one of the contestants disregards their "help", and goes with the way they feel they need to – isn't that what being a performer is all about? Going with your gut? I know to the Idol producers its all about money – and iTunes downloads – thus the reason for Iovine's presence – but I'd rather the show be about the contestants rather than his huge ego.

I'm just thrilled that "American Idol" is better than it's ever been! Any of the Top 13 contestants this season would have easily won last year. The judges this year are better, though it probably wouldn't hurt for them to offer a little more constructive criticism. But at least they aren't being mean for the sake of being mean. It is honestly anyone's contest to win but I'm thinking Casey isn't doing himself any favors by doing that stand up bass thing. Haley is as cute as can be and her smile and awesome body will help make up for whatever she may lack in her voice. Scotty is going to be a Nashville star. Is there any doubt? James is just totally awesome and should be the leader of a hard rock band. All of the contestants have a chance to win it all!

You know, I'm not sure who I think will go home tomorrow, but I do agree Lauren has what it takes to be the last female standing – and I hope she sticks around!

Sherri you are absolutely right! It is a pleasure to hear from someone who recognizes true talent!

If Sherri recognized true talent then she wouldn't have picked Lauren to go. She is by far one of the best left.

Wrong on all 3 counts. None of your bottom 3 will be in the bottom 3. Jacob, Casey and Paul are your bottom 3. I admire Casey for sticking to his roots, but Jazz? I've heard better music on an elevator. I like Paul but his voice is weak. Jacob's old church lady following will run out soon.

Really great talent this year. I think they all did well but Casey really blew me away, can't wait to buy his music!

You won't buy it for several reasons: No one ever buys the albums anymore, because no one knows when they've been released. You won't buy it because, as with dozens and dozens of past contestants who also received promises of career gold, you didn't buy their albums either. Everyone just loved B-B-B-Blake Lewis- what's your favorite song from his album? Tamyra Gray? Kimberly Locke? Latoya London? Diana Degarmo? Bo Bice? Katharine McPhee? Melinda Doolittle? Michael Johns? Lee Dewyze? You folks tout these people as stars in the making, and then refuse to support them Post-Idol. We're looking for a Kelly Clarkson here. We're looking for a Carrie Underwood. We're looking for someone the entire world is going to be open to, not just the teenaged girls. Do you really see a world wide Superstar in this group?! I see many great singers, but not a single Star!

Js, I couldnt agree with you more. There have been plenty of great singers out there with loads of talent, personality, looks ect. But none with that little bit of extra to make them a star. I keep watching year after year hoping to see someone that catches my ear only to be disappointed 🙁

This season is by far the my least favorite. Judges are horrible, Steven Tyler reminds me of Paula and is way too old, Randy says the same thing over and over and Jennifer, she is worse than Ellen was last year. They never critize the performers, to much WillIAm, too much Jimmy and way too much staged gimicks (like when they have girls rush the stage). I have watch every season and every episode. This year will be my last. Ryan is now the only one who is entertaining, and that is not a good thing. American Idol is on its way out.

People have been saying American Idol is on it's way out for 8 years; and yet here it is in season 10!!! And if I had a dollar for everytime someone said this is my last time I'm watching AI – I'd be rich as the shows producers!!

I agree about the judges. It's like 3 stages of Paula Abdul up there. Randy is serious, but loving Paula. Jennifer is giddy-sipping-on-the-bubbly Paula, and Steven is whacked out pill poppin Paula – but not one of them has anything bad to say. They think every performance is a show stopping, record making performance, and it just isn't. You NEED that voice that's going to be honest and start telling some of these kids the truth- which is that they are terrible. If they watch a few performances again (Casey, Scotty, Jacob), they won't be as impressed the second time around.

Not watching Idol anymore. Voters don't recognize talent, just hormones. The last few winners are real losers, so don't want to see another nobody win. The real talent is already gone.

I enjoyed all the performances albeit in varying degrees. Casey and James were right on to follow their own instincts; those were the two strongest performances of the night in my book (and I am not generally a metal fan). I liked Haley's performance more than the judges seemed to, and thought she was third best.

There were some strong performances tonight. It's too bad everyone is competing for second place. Even though she's gone and signing her own recording contract, Pia is still head and shoulders above everyone else as a performer, singer AND artist. Congrats to Casey for sticking to his guns. It's too bad it was extremely weak and sounded more like a lounge act. I hope he's in the bottom three and gets booted out, along with Mr. Squinty Eyes (who is a Adam Lambert wanna-be – and that's not meant as a compliment either).
J Lo rocks as a judge. She gives more relevant comments and constructive critiques than Steve Tyler ever thought of doing. What a waste as a judge!

To all of those comments against Tyler being a jiudge..... I say you are very very wrong. He is the reason I watch this season. From all the blogs I have read, it seems many feel as I do...... great!
Please accept that Simon is gone, Pia is gone and discuss your choices in a civilized (non nasty) fashion.
Bottom three: Paul, Stefano and Jacob.
I enjoy watching James perform, tourette's and all. I love his music choices and his passion.

I really admire and respect Casey for singing the song he felt right about, rather than choosing a safer (and likely more popular with the AI demographic) choice. At the end of the day I felt he wanted to be true to himself and in a little way stick it to the man. I don't think he will get a lot of votes but I thought his song choice and performance were brilliant.

While I didn't see Haley, I'd put the bottom 3 as Casey, Jacob, and Scotty. As a big fan of country music, I can tell all of you non-country fans that Scotty is just awful. He's a carbon copy of every other deep voice out there, and brings nothing new to it- except maybe that "I can't hold my head up straight, so I'll use two hands to hold the mic to keep from falling over" thing he's got going. That's new. Jacob is good, but he's not a stand-out above hundreds of other gospel/soul artists. He's just a copy. Nothing new, nothing unique. Casey is such a bad singer. Growling, and making crazy eyes doesn't sell me on this guy. If there could be a bottom 4, I'd toss in Paul for being terrible. However, I'd rather keep him around to ensure that a few undeserving front-runners get the boot....Like boring, unoriginal, nothing special, sure-I-can-sing-but-I-have-no-personality-Pia. I agree with what that coach guy said last night "everyone is singing to stay, no one is singing to win. I'm a big fan of Idol, but wouldn't buy anyones album from this season.....yet. The rocker guy is good, but it doesn't seem genuine at all. It seems like something he can do, not who he is. It seems like he's forcing this "out there rocker" image on us, without the "out there rocker" personality to back it up. I wonder what type of music he REALLY wants to sing. Again, good voice, but no passion.

Jason – Seriouslly! James has no passion??? Gimme a break; what show are you watching? James is probably the most passionate singer in the group! Not to mention the one who has remained constant and awesome each week! Every single performance is concert worthy!! As for Scotty – carbon copy? Of who? There hasn't been a singer with that tone since Richard Sterban! If you don't know who that is – your not as big a country fan as you think – or you just have no knowledge of countrys history!

I can't stand looking at Jacob another week. Really. His clothes do not fit – who is DRESSING him??? – and he clothes his eyes TOO tight and opens his mouth TOO wide. A little more and I'll be able to see thru his digestive system. And he is a conceited jerk. He can preach all he wants, but he really thinks he's better than everyone – not just musically, either. I was glad Jimmy put him in his place last night. Yeah, preaching to millions of people before you sold one album, not a good idea. So he should go home if for no other reason – for being STUPID.

They ARE all good ... but good enough ? I'm not so sure ...

The judges are so useless – why even bother with their stupid comments – they arent helping anyone. They gave kudos to Casey and James for doing their own thing but when Naima did it they criticised her for it ! Go figure l...

Paul is so cute and fun to watch but his voice wasnt really there last nite

Lauren was very good and she is so sweet – i hope she stays

Casey started out badly (did you hear him cough ?) but ended very well and it was jazzy and fun for a change

Scotty should have sung "Everybodys Talking" a much better song than whatever it was he sang – yuck

Haley is fun to watch like Paul (they both make me smile) but the judges didnt like her song choice – i liked it alot

Stefano sang well but he's always so serious and boring – at least to me...

Jacob is such a drama queen ! He's has a very good voice but I'm tired of his big mouth

James did well again but i cant say i'm a fan of his screaming songs – just doesnt do it for me

Bottom 3 should be Scotty, Stefano, and Jacob

If it were up to me i'd send Scotty home because i really cant stand country music and i dont want to hear him or look at him anymore – enough is enough !
