On "The View" today, Barbara Walters, who had a number of interviews with Elizabeth Taylor, opened the show with a few clips from their conversations to honor the Oscar winner, who died on Wednesday at the age of 79.
One in particular, from 1999, showcased Taylor's trademark humor. Walters inquired what the actress wanted on her tombstone, to which she responded, "Here lies Liz. She lived. Wait, no...Here lies Elizabeth. She hated being called Liz. But she lived," she said with a laugh.
"She had a sense of humor so bawdy that I’d say 'really, did that just come out of your mouth?'" "The View's" Whoopi Goldberg recalled. "She was a great broad and a great friend."
Walters agreed that in addition to being a great actress, Taylor could be "very salty," but that's also what everyone loved about her. If you went to her home, Walters recalled, "she had wonderful paintings and jewelry like no one else had. But her life is what no one else had."
Taylor, Walters continued, is like "the last of the movie stars... She was famous for her films, her divorces, her men, her jewelry. She really lived the life she had."
