Did you see that coming on 'Idol?'SPOILER ALERT – Tonight's "Idol" blog will reveal who is leaving the competition, so please don't read if you don't want to know. I thought I had it all figured out. I went in to this elimination thinking I knew who we would be sending home tonight. I even had the right brackets when it came to the bottom three. But imagine my surprise when the contestant who was voted off was announced. I feel somewhat sad. Sure Karen wasn't AMAZING last night, but she wasn't nearly as pitchy as some other folks (I'm looking at you Naima). What do you think? Did the right person get sent home tonight? Should the judges have used their save? Sound off! |

I think Thia has such a lovely, unique voice and she should win Idol 2011. If only the producers can select a winning song that will really show off her talent. My fear of her not winning is that she has Asian blood ... Her performance takes on a high when there is minimal music backup. Imagine her singing "O Holy Night" with just a string quartet

I love Karen. I think she's beautiful, talented, and definitely sings better than some people over there. I love her style. Every performance, she had something cute on and I loved how she did her hair. When she was singing the song Hero, I almost started crying. It was amazing. Naima is not bad, but I think people vote for her because she has some crazy dance moves. That's the only thing I like about her. Overall, all of the contestants are talented.

I agree 100% with siren4song. I too, hear enough Spanish all day and have no choice about it on the work front. But in my home, on my time, I do NOT have to listen to it. The show is called 'American Idol', NOT 'Latino Idol'. The first time Karen switched to Spanish, it turned me off right then and there.
I also think she's really not that talented. There was never any 'Big' moments with her – all just so-so in her singing. So either way, America got it right as did the judges in not wasting a save on her.

Casey freaked me out and Jacob was off key, I see Pia, Thia, Durben, Scotty, in the top 4. I don't like Paul his voice is annoying. Casey just scared me when he did Nirvannia, I really don't like Niema she was just pitch, Stefano did better this week compared to last week, yes Durbin is like another version of Adam Lambert but he needs to bring orginality to the plate if he wants to stay.
The bottom three was absolutely correct, and I predicted it. Though I thought Naima was going home...and, in fact, I had Karen as the best of the three, in the end I believe it doesn't matter. All three belonged in the bottom three...all three deserved to go home...none of those three has any chance of winning, and unless they really pull their socks up and improve drastically, Naima and Haley will be in the bottom three again.
Absolutely saw that coming, Her mother cost her the comp. Everytime the camera was pointed at her she was waving the mexican flag. That is the only reason she is gone. I told my wife two weeks ago she would be gone because of that.
Agreed! I work in downtown LA. I hear Spanish all the freakin time. I love how diversity means lack of white people to some of these idiots. Come visit downtown, and you will see an almost all Latino (that means almost all Mexican) city. This chick can sing better than most people walking down the street, but come on, she isn't as talented as the ones left. Oh and I hate the "Latinas are back!" drivel she was always about. Yeah, honey we know you're back. There are over 20 million illegal ones here just like your Madre.

I too was shocked when Naima was sent to the couch. Karen has a beautiful voice and I can still see her going far with it. However, many Americans are tired of pressing 1 for English and I think that's what got Karen sent home. Even though she sounded great in English and in Spanish, I didn't care much for the back and forth in a single song.
I think Karen was very talented, but she pushed the Latino thing too far. It's one thing to be an amazingly talented singer who happens to be latino and it's another to be a Latino who can sing. I don't care if your Chinese, Latino, gay, straight, white, black or martian (Paul), this is a singing show. Naima is probably the only one going out there pushing herself to show all of her talents. She can dance and sing and put on a show. She doesn't just stand there and sing a pretty ballad (Pia & Tia), she works it. Heck, even Steffano worked it harder than Pia! That's a shame too because Pia is probably the most talented of the group as far as singing. I love Scotty too. That kid doesn't need Idol. He's already a country star. And I love Casey. He's the most overall musical talent I think. Good group this year. A lot better than Lee what's his name from last year.
Karen deserved to go a long while ago and shouldn't have made to Hollywood, in my opinion. I think Naima is next. Pia and Lauren are my votes for the win - at the moment.

Karen has talent but her style of singing and her song choices are just too boring for most people. Can you see a bunch of kids downloading those songs? I can't. The judges were right not to save her since she didn't have a shot at winning. You only save the top 3 or 4 people, not the bottom 4 just because they're nice and can sing.
I have to say that I really am rooting for Naima. Yeah, she didn't do very well, but the truth is that there are other contestants that were just as bad, and in my opinion, perhaps worse. Take Paul; he didn't sing on key, and he looks like a drunken monkey on stage (I can't stand him, and I think that he should go home)or Jacob... He was supposed to do a rock song, but he totally "diva'd" it up, and it didn't sound anything like a rock song. Thia had no passion, and Casey is getting really old with his semi screamy angry songs... Everyone is here for a reason, but I think that Karen got voted off, because, at least in my opinion, the constant switch from English to Spanish got really old really quickly. Don't get me wrong, porque yo hablo Espanol muy bueno, entonces no tiene nada para hacer con la idioma (I speak Spanish really well, so it doesn't have anything o do with the language issue), but she should have done songs in on language. Just English, or just Spanish... she could definitely be a great Spanish artist, but the constant switching was just too much for the American people, myself included.

I don't think J-Lo favors Latinas so much as she sees a kindred spirit. She probably sees some of her early self in Karen. She probably remembers the days when she was trying to break into the business and feels for what Karen is going through. There's nothing wrong with that. I was surprised Karen got sent home. I thought it would have been Haley. I think if Naima doesn't step it quick, (and I mean really quick, like by next week) that she will, and should be gone.
Karen did everything possible to imitate J-Lo – from her hair to her clothes to her singing. She wasn't being herself, and I think that's what ruined it for Karen more than anything else. Even J-Lo gave her a tip to let her heart come out more – that means be authentic.

I will never wrap my arms around anyone playing the race card. And that's what Karen was doing. I hear enough Spanish over the loudspeakers at Home Depot. If she wants to live here she can assimilate into OUR culture. You can call me anything you want. I'm hispanic, but I'm a US Citizen FIRST. Segregate yourselves and you will be segregated. If she doesn't want to speak English here where it's the primary language she can go home. God knows we aren't allowed to live/work in her country unless we know and speak their language. No one else shoves their heritage in everyone's face like the people south of us. They hate us and we hate them. It is what it is. Go on American Idol and sing in Spanish, and we'll make sure you're out in a matter of weeks. Sorry Jennifer Lopez. You can go back home, too, if you like.

I think Naima is the most original "character" on the show. She would add so much personality to the tour, I hope she makes it to the top 10. Picking the next two to leave is very difficult. I just don't know, but Karen was ok to leave. Perhaps Thia and Hailey next. Guys are pretty strong this year, but the Lusk kid's voice gets tiring after a while. I could never listen to an entire album of him.

The bottom three were bad but Paul should be there as well. I can't stand listening to him and watching him bop around the the robot from "Lost in Space" just makes it worse.
All of these Paul haters obviously didn't get to see the original song he performed to get into the top 24. Now THAT is an album I would buy! His performances the last 2 weeks haven't been very strong (I was disappointed), but I want him to stick around because I am super anxious to see what else he does! Casey is wicked talented...didn't care for his Nirvana performance, but give that dude an upright base and I'm a fan all day long! I wasn't a fan of Karen...she just kind of gave me the yawns. I was surprised that Naima didn't go home, but I think her days are limited unless she can pull it together and stay on key. I kind of like Hayley – her voice is unique, but I need to hear her do some bluesy stuff to decide if I really like her. Pia has a beautiful voice, but for some reason she just doesn't do much for me. I really like Scotty – I'd like to hear him do some Randy Travis, and I love Lauren, but she needs to make some better song choices!

She wasn't my top pick for going but I had Niama, Haley or her going figuring it would be Haley.

i think haley should have went home this week. i dont think haley is as good as some of the others and i dont think she knows where she is as an artist. naima, jacob, lauren, and thia can go after... i like casey, pia, scotty, and paul.
who cares...she wouldn't have finished first anyway so she'll go now or in a week or two...there are only three or four we should even be watching....
Scotty needs to go next. All he does is imitate other country singers. He is quite taken with himself and poses for the camera constantly with that "aw sucks" look that he has practiced in front of his mirror for hours!

I completely agree – Karen shouldn't have gone home. Naima has dropped since her time in Hollywood and am so ready for her to go home. I think what killed Karen's chances with America was the constant bi-lingual singing – I don't think America is ready for that. It was nice when she did it every so often (she did it very well) but it wasn't necessary every week. I know she was just being herself, but you have to break from your shell eventually to show your versatility.
The back-and-forth between languages is ridiculous and pointless. Why stop there? Why not sing a line in English, then Spanish, then Chinese, then French, then Italian...

Karen was horrible, and annoying. Naima is worse, but she will be next. Either way, there's no possible scenario in which either of them would make it much farther.
And JLO was extremely annoying with how badly she wanted to use the save to keep Karen. REALLY? This EARLY on? How DARE you even think of using the save when she was kicked off so EARLY on. If you can't make it into the top 4 or 5... America doesn't want you!
There are only 3 who have what it takes to win: Pia, James and Lauren. The order that the rest go is pretty much irrelevant. Several have nice voices (Thia, Jacob, Haley) but probably won't make it on the radio. Others are interesting (Paul, Casey, Naima) and may find a niche somewhere. Stefano could be a breakout, but I'm still undecided. Scotty is a doll, but he's pretty boring and a clone of a lot of other country singers like Josh Turner.

Casey Abrams should have been thrown off the stage after that God-awful rendition of "Smells Like Teen Spirit"...If Kurt Cobain was alive today,he'd stick a shotgun in his mouth all over again if he saw that.
Totally agree with the bottom three, but wished there was room for Paul in there. Can't wait until he goes! I was kind of hoping it would be Haley that went. I'm not a huge fan of Naima but at least she's more of an entertainer and more interesting that plain Haley and so-so Karen.
I Think that Pia wil win it all. She is the best singer.

I actually thought Karen was good and was just appalled that she was sent home and Naima is still in the competetiion...Naima cant sing at all....Karen was/is so much better than her. Very sad to see her go 🙁

Naima is a hot looking gal. Her eyes are crazy. This is about votes (if it is on the up and up). I thought Allsion Iraheta or Adam should have won a couple years ago...and last year I thought Lee DeWeeze was a complete total joke. One thing bothering me this year is that randy is the only judge with any damn brains or who can tell it like it is. Steven looks like a tired and old Paula. And you thought Paula was stupid.
What a joke... The performances by Naima & Paul the night before were really, really bad. For some of them not to make the bottom 3 last night shows that one can get by with popularity votes. Randy has the cahoonas to say who is "pitchy"....come on JaLo & Steven.... keep up with the program here and stop trying to be everyones friend. Naima & Paul have had two weeks of sub par and very pitchy performances. While I understand Karen would not have been able to keep up with Pia or Jacob in the long run..... she was certainly better than Naima or Paul...

The contestants should be judged by professionals. To leave this potentially career making decision up to the general public is ludicrous. Ninety nine percent of the public have no musical talent and wouldn't know if someone was singing off key or not. So in the end it turns into a popularity contest.
That's why it's called POPular music... about 1% of today's top 40 singers have any legitimate talent. In a country where McDonald's is the most popular food, and the Black Eyed Peas are chosen to perform during halftime, and Charlie Sheen can sell out Radio City Music Hall – twice .... did you really expect for people to vote for talent over popularity?
All this show is about is finding the Best of the Worst.

IN MY OPINION, Naima and Paul really have no talent and since this is a talent show, they should go. Jacob would probably be a more entertaining singer if he didn't think he had to be so loud. It is now apparent how much Simon is missed on this show. I know he was abrasive but he also told the truth about each contestant's "talent". Unfortunately, most people vote not on talent but, like the Vote for the Worst website, want to just mess up the results and keep people on because they're the least talented.

I think this is one of the worst years of IDOL ever. I'm sick and tired already of Jennifer Lopez who just LOVES everyone but doesn't have Paula's quirky personality. Randy is just boring, boring, boring. Steven – well, when does he ever offer any constructive criticism. The show is bore. End it after this season.

I missed it. I agree, Idol judges are not being judges. Jlo os too afraid to be honest, because she's nice and doesn't want to be labeled the "bad guy"...Steve is not on tour, so this is like a teenage summer camp counselor job for him, so really, Randy is the only seasoned judge on the show, and seems like he's the only one with enough balls to say what's what..whenever that happens....I think there are two good singers on the show. One boy, one girl. But hey, people voted Jennifer Hudson off the show....need i say more? She is a phenomenal singer!! With quite a success story! Paul needs to stop singing like he's got oatmeal mixed with gravel in his throat. It's old, and it might be his signature voice, but it is not good. Not.....Goood. Peace.
My Prediction on the next couple of weeks of who gets evicted next: Naima > Haley > Lauren > Thia >Scotty After they go then it will be harder to decide.

I don't understand this reasoning. Scotty is a very talented singer. Just because you don't like country doesn't mean he can't sing and doesn't deserve to be on the show. There are a lot of singers that only sing one type of music. Would you expect John Mayer, Matt Kearny, John Lengend to suddenly switch to country music? No. Then why shoudl Scotty switch to a different type of music. I don't even like country and I think Scotty is going places.

I must be missing something because I think Jacob Lusk needs to go home. While I agree he has crazy range, I don't believe he is American Idol material. What am I not getting??
You're missing nothing. Jacob is literally distressing to watch and worse to listen to. I have yet to fathom why he gets so much praise for his overly emotive, fleshy and terribly effeminate performances. I would never buy an album from this guy, regardless of the backing he'd get from all those "famous" producers should he win.
I was sad too to see Karen go. It should have been Thia M. She is too young and boring song choices.

Hate to say it but have to agree with you. Most of us (guilty as charged) are holding on to something that was good in the past. But it really bl0ws for the past couple of years and the judges get worse by the minute. This will be it for me.
Naima has been picked by the web site "Vote for the Worst" as their pick and they're asking their followers to vote over and over for her. They are also responsible for Sanjaya and the oriental guy staying on so long. They're sort of like the people who keep introducing viruses and malware so that it is becoming difficult to enjoy the net. By the way, another program, Dial Idol, has picked the winner like seven or eight times shows Jacob, Scotty and Lauren as the top three each week. We'll see.

Wrong. Vote for the Worst has selected Paul McDonald not Naima. They are pushing voting for Paul big time. Dial Idol has predicted a few winners and was really effective at predicting season 9. With the advent of online voting, their predictions this season have not even been close. Just look at their stats the last couple of weeks. Did you bother to look at the web sites that you are quoting?

This show is so over.
It has become so talentless and unimportant that this show has not had any real future for a couple of years now.
Look at the ratings. Granted, it still has more viewers than it really deserves. But even the mindless Fox viewership has dwindled over the years. No need to bring it back for another useless season. Hasn't produced anything halfway decent in years.
Of the three, definitely Naima should've gone. In fact, out of all of them, Naima was second in my mind only to the egregious Paul, who will torment us for who knows long because of the Brainless Teenybopper Factor. (Anyone know if that Vote for the Worst thing is still going? That could partially account for it too, though it hardly explains the judges.)
Karen is much better than Naima. Scotty has a great voice. Jacob is fabulous. The men out-rank the women this year,
but there are a couple of good women. Why so many people have to make so many nasty comments about these
people is beyond me. It is true that probably no one who writes these comments could hold a candle to these kids as
far as singing is concerned, so show some class.

Apparently I'm not hearing the same as the judges and the American public. Karen is definitely better than some. However Naima should't have even made it this far! I wrote off American Idol a few years ago due to the choices. So far looks like I won't be watching in the future.......

I am very satisfied with Karen leaving tonight. She should have never been in the top anyway. Kendra should have been the wildcard not Niema. The Spanish to English crap drove me crazy! Niema is next..then Paul..mark my words. Lusk will not be far behind. Although he does have a great voice..he ruins it by screaming and throwing in to much gospal in every song!
One thing that I like about Idol this year is that nasty mean things are not being said to the contestants. Some of you on this blog are simply using it to spew your dislike for a certain ethnicity, manner of dress and even size. Why are you watching Idol?? Does it give you what you think is your opportunity to pull yourself up by pulling someone else down? Do you perhaps think that you get stand up there and belt it out in front of the judges, tv audience and show audience. If you can't say anything nice just shut up or watch another show.
Naima & Karen are both not worthy of being a finalist. This crop is not so good. I like Lauren, Jacob, Casey, James & Stefano but no one really stands out. And I am so not country music, sorry Scotty. You will have a career you deserve it but not as my American Idol

I missed the show tonight, who were the bottom three? I agree that Karen was not all that good, But I think the 15 year old Thia is completely boring!
Agreed. Thia hits flat notes every week. She's too inexperienced for this show. Naima should go, followed by Paul, Stefano, Jacob....They really would have had a more interesting show if they kept Robbie and Julie, two great talents. This is now becoming a weird season. (If Paul wins this – I'm done. Who needs a Rod Stewart wannabe?) Lee's song was dull as was his performance (how did he win AI?), and the opening group number was embarrassingly bad.
I've never heard Thia hit a bum note. Even if she's booted, she'll get picked up by Disney. She's perfect for them.

This is an American television show. Speak AND SING in English! It's great to live in a pluralistic, multi-linguistic society, but public presentations should be in English. Apparently, she was singing to a population that did not (care to?) watch and vote for her. This is the equivalent of me being on France Idol and singing in English. When in Rome...

There is a real beauty to hearing a song sung in Spanish. I am glad Karen sang some songs like that. She just may very well pursue that avenue and become well-known as she progresses and become more famous as a Latina singer than all of the others on AI. She could have a fan base, eventually, that reaches many Latino countries, so on several continents, with the huge Latino population in the world.

Singing in Spanish on AI is ridiculous. I think she's ok, not good but ok. I'm surprised that she even made it this far. When she sang that song "Hero", to be honest I was kind of enjoying it because it's one of my favorite songs.... then, spanish lyrics kicked in.... totally threw me off board (Helloooo? I do not understand Spanish and this is American Idol!). I felt instantly that she was trying to get her votes from Latinos voters. Just like I felt she was trying to impressed JLo when they picked Top 24... And then she kept on signing English then Spanish, it became very very annoying and ridiculous. American Idol should be judged upon true talents... not sucking up behinds to get through...

I never liked her. She had a good voice but she always acted like she loved herself and I didn't like the way she "always" switched between english and spanish. While it is fine to be proud of your cultural heritage, not everyone wants to see it each and every week. I think she overplayed that card.

I'm latina and annoyed that she sings her songs in both Spanish and English. At first it was alright but then week after week It just got a tad routine. She definitely wouldn't win Idol with her english/spanish songs.

Agreed – singing in English and Spanish *was* definitely tiresome for me. I can't understand Spanish, so I never understood the appeal when she did it at first, but thought it was ok, nothing to go home over. The more she did it, the less I cared for her, however. That move, I think, just alienated a lot of people who ended up not voting for her. I hope she didn't get guidance to keep on doing it. I know there are a lot of Spanish speakers in the US, but you also don't want to limit your audience and their votes in a popularity contest.
Additionally, overall the contestants this year are very weak. Who is that producer that gives them all that near-useless advice and the awful mixing of their songs? I miss Simon – they need another judge like him. Someone who knows how to cull the herd and isn't afraid to tell the truth, even if it might hurt someone's feelings.

I feel kind of Bad for Karen. Of the 3 choices in the bottom 3, she was likely the best, but the voters got it right for the bottom 3. Karen had a rough 2 weeks, and she did have weak song choices. The other 2 won't be far behind.

I think it should have been Naima but agree Karen would be next so either way Karen won't be around. I would be curious which judge(s) wanted to keep Karen since Randy said it wasn't unanimous. I'm glad the judges didn't use their save–there are better performers that may need to be kept on by the judges.

Everytime Karen sang I wanted to push on her stomach like an good voice coach would do to get her voice out. It seemed that what she gave was all she had. She never belted out anything to catch your attention or engage the audience. Pretty voice but nothing to build a successful career.

More surprising is that Haley was in the bottom three. Truth is, this is really more than just vocals when you consider who is actually voting and controlling who leaves and who stays, and Haley is hot...like it or not.
