Mike Huckabee criticizes Natalie Portman for being pregnant and unwed

One person not cheering recent Oscar winner Natalie Portman? Mike Huckabee.

The Fox News Channel host has criticized the "Black Swan" star for being pregnant and unmarried.

"One of the things that's troubling is that people see a Natalie Portman or some other Hollywood starlet who boasts of, 'Hey look, you know, we're having children, we're not married, but we're having these children,' and they're doing just fine,'" Huckabee told radio host Michael Medved on Monday. "But there aren't really a lot of single moms out there who are making millions of dollars every year for being in a movie."

Huckabee believes Portman is presenting a distorted image with her pregnancy. "Not everybody hires nannies, and caretakers, and nurses," he says. "Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can't get a job, and if it weren't for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care. And that's the story that we're not seeing, and it's unfortunate that we glorify and glamorize the idea of out of children wedlock."

In her best actress acceptance speech, Portman thanked fiancé Benjamin Millepied, "who choreographed the film, and has now given me my most important role of my life." Medved told Huckabee that Millepied "didn't give her the most wonderful gift, which would be a wedding ring! And it just seems to me that sending that kind of message is problematic."

Update, 2:11 p.m.: CNN has received the following statement from Huckabee in regards to his earlier comments about Natalie Portman.

"In a recent media interview about my new book, A Simple Government, I discussed the first chapter, 'The Most Important Form of Government Is a Father, Mother, and Children.' I was asked about Oscar-winner Natalie Portman's out-of-wedlock pregnancy. Natalie is an extraordinary actor, very deserving of her recent Oscar trophy and I am glad she will marry her baby's father," Huckabee said. "However, contrary to what the Hollywood media reported, I did not 'slam' or 'attack' Natalie Portman, nor did I criticize the hardworking single mothers in our country. My comments were about the statistical reality that most single moms are very poor, under-educated, can't get a job, and if it weren't for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death. That's the story that we're not seeing, and it's unfortunate that society often glorifies and glamorizes the idea of having children out of wedlock."

Even as a republican, I completely disagree with this. Natalie Portman works hard for her "millions" and will not be a single mom. She is in love and happy and is a role model for any young woman. If she wants a baby and can afford it then who says she shouldn't have one? Huckabee, keep your mouth shut, you're coming off stupid

My mom is a single parent and not by choice. She always worked hard to provide for my sister and I with little to no outside assistance. She often went without things just so we would be provided for. She did an amazing job raising us: I'm about to graduate with a bachelor's degree and will be attending grad school in the fall and my sister is working towards her associate's degree. This jerk shouldn't lump all single mothers together and definitely not criticize a pregnant woman who has the power to squish him like the bug he is.

  5. Happy proud and successful single mother

First off, being a single parent can be a good thing. Although I may struggle, we manage and my kids are not loved or nurtured any less because their dad is gone. In my case, i got on welfare when i was 29 wks pregnant and was put on bedrest to keep my child alive. And when i got pregnant with my 3rd 4th and 5th child, i didnt get more money, nor did i want it. I wanted my kiddos. They support you in getting educated and working. and if you dont comply you fofeit your aid. i worked into my 5 bedroom house, my car and i'm almost finished with my RN. and my tax $s helped pay back my aid. WE ALL DESERVE THE LOVE A CHILD BRINGS. WE ALL DESERVE TO MAKE SOMEONE OF OURSELVES, AND WE ALL HAVE TO WORK TO MAKE OUR DREAMS COME TRUE. SO PLS DONT JUDGE. ITS JUST NOT FAIR. AND WHY BE SO ANGRY? IT JUST MAKES U LOOK EXTREMELY IGNORANT. U HAVENT WALKED A DAY IN OUR SHOES. AND WITHOUT STRUUGLE SUCCESS DOESNT FEEL SO GOOD. DONT ALL U TOO GOOD FOR UNMARRIED PARENTS AGREE?

If statistically speaking the majority of singles moms "are very poor, uneducated, can't get a job, and if it weren't for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care," do you really think that if these mother's had married first, they'd be less more, more educated, have a job and healthcare? These same mothers would probably be married to men who are poor, uneducated, jobless, and on government assistance of some sort and still have no healthcare. Being married does NOT solve these problems. Education you get from schools, which should lead to better jobs, more money, food on the table and still that doesn't guarantee proper healthcare.

I'm sorry but have to agree with him on this one. It is very sad that today there are a lot of children being born to unmarried parents or those that dont know their other parent (father or mother) that left out of there lives before they were even born. As far as moms being uneducated & so on and so on. I'd have to disagree on that part a little because not all single parents are that way. The bad parents are being more noticed then those who really are ok taking care of their kids on their own. As for Natalie Portman I dont know to much about her personal life nor do I care to much but she is however a good actress and from what I've read so far at least shes trying to make a better life for her child before their baby comes. Hopefully, the Dad of the child is not a loser where they get what they want and skip town. But yea, I get what Mr. Huckabees point is.

Well..nice attempt to clean up the first statement. First single mothers are "uneducated", now we are "under-educated". I wonder why. Maybe because politicians like him stand with their foot on our necks and then look down upon us as if we are another species. They talk about our hardships like they have some concern or sympathy. If it wasn't for minorities, those dirty politicians wouldn't be able to pocket all those incentives and write offs. Bottom line is this, there are single mothers who are educated, like myself, and don't depend on welfare to feed my "starving" kid. When there is a will there is a way. Would it be possible to look over those "statistics" and find a way to motivate and not segregate? I do not appreciate being included with an ignorant stereotype. Sometimes an opinion is better left unsaid, no matter who you are. God does not like ugly. I pray for you. God BLESS.

I disagree. If you are uneducated, and do not have a job, then don't have children. That's the problem with our country. We spend to much money on helping people who don't help themselves. It's very easy to prevent from getting pregnant. Natalie can have 10 children out of wedlock, because SHE will be supporting them, not my tax dollars.

So, when Bristol Palin had a baby out-of-wedlock and as a teen, social conservatives couldn't stop falling over themselves praising Sarah and Todd for being so supportive. Yet when NP or others have babies out-of-wedlock (despite having the financial wherewithal to care for the child unlike BP), all they can say is what a bad example they set.

I guess it's not really the same since NP isn't a fictional character. Either way, both women, both fictional and real, are financially prepared to care for that child. We don't know how much Natalie Portman's SO will care for that baby – he might be a very involved dad and partner for all we know. And marriage does not guarantee good parenthood.

This is oh so familiar "Newt" talk. So sick and tired of high and mighty making blanket statements about women. Still male passive society. As if we women can produce children alone. Women are primarily single mothers because 1 in 3 are victims if domestic violence. Men are more likely to commit crimes and men are more likely to have affairs. Where does that leave a society if women who are mothers? ...statistically Huckabee? But if course it is some actress in Hollywood fault for man's failure to care for his wife and children.

The absolute bottom line is that women who aren't equipped to care for a child should have any. (teenager or adult) He does have a point MAJORITY not ALL single mothers are struggling and way below poverty level, and STILL continue to have kids to CONTINUE getting government help. That is what REALLY passes me off, the government helps those stupid girls but they don't bat an eye to help an independent woman who wasn't stupid, and DID/DOES use a condom. It sucks that he did pick on Natalie and he shouldn't have, but the fact remains, that is what happens when you live in the public eye. First off, I want to start by saying that I am not a mother, but I was offended by what he said about single mothers being uneducated and poor and all that other stuff. I also have to disagree with him when he says that you should or have to be married to have children or for them to grow up properly. I don't think it really matters either way if a child grows up with married parents or in a single parent household. There can be a child growing up in a household with married parents and they teach the child right and wrong and guide them in the right direction in life and the child can still end up being a criminal. What does that show then? Absolutely nothing. I don't think being a child of a married couple means anything at all. I guess I don't see the point of why he was attacking Natalie or celebrities in a situation similar to hers. You know she is no dumb woman; she went to Harvard and got a degree and like others have stated she is 30 and is successful in her career. I just don't think it should really be that big of an issue that she is pregnant and not married. Last time I checked she is here in America where she has the ability to live her life any way she chooses.

Marriage doesn't nearly speak to the time, commitment, dedication and love that must be given to a child. And here all of us are on his blog casting stones. While we should be worrying about the stones in our lives we left unturned. Instead of judging her for getting pregnant, let's judge her and this man tht help create this child on the way the child is raised! Not on a piece of paper. And let's not forgot most women when dreaming about their lives plans on being a single woman, poor or uneducated. I had quit my job and was waiting on him to send me the money to move and I just never heard from him. I just heard from him about a month ago, wanting to see his son. So lets talk about the dead beat dads that think they don't have to take responsiblity for their actions. And also, I don't fall into the category of being a single mom who is very poor, uneducated and can't get a job. I have a wonderful job with benefits and its a career job. Talk about a stereo type!! He sound self-righteous and judgmental. Is he suggesting that marriage secures a woman's financial future? Such a rarity in our society for a woman to be able to provide for herself? Is it such a rarity that a man might provide for a child and support the mother of his child? Marriage does not guarantee anything... marriage cannot guarantee financial security, a nurturing environment for children, or safety... But a woman whether its Natalie Portman or just a single hard working mom who is able to provide for herself&child I really don't see why this person can't be a mother. He certainly didn't hop onto FOX news to slam bristol Palin or her family when she became a single mother. He wouldn't dare criticize a Republican pregnant girl – I'm sure he congratulated her for keeping the baby.

Oh my gosh, people! Have all of you read the entire interview? Huckabee did not single out Ms. Portman, he was asked about her. While I agree she is a wonderful actress and is very beautiful, she is a role model to young girls. It is no different than the sports stars that are role models to young boys and girls. When somebody becomes a celebrity, they can be become role models, whether they like it or not. I used to be a single mom, due to a divorce. My ex could not keep a job and child support was not high on his list of priorities. The sad part is that he lived with his widowed mother who thought I shouldn't get child support because I lived with my parents. DUH! Mr. Huckabee, as a former government official, has seen some things that the average person may not see, such as the statistics. For all you single moms that commented that you had good incomes and had no problems, good girls! However, that is not the majority. There are those like me, single due to divorce. Then there are the teen moms who are very naive about the responsibilities. I am not saying they should have abortions, go the adoption route or anything like that. Teen girls look up to movie stars and singers, wanting to be like them. Fine but the majority don't have the resources to raise children that these celebrities have. A lot of them think that their boyfriends really love them and are going to have the white picket fence life. That is not reality and neither is Hollywood. There are too many people on government assistance due to this type of belief. It can't be changed because young girls are normally gullible. No one is to blame. Fiance does not mean married, even though married may not be the ideal situation. The bottom line is Mr. Huckabee, like him or not, did not single Ms. Portman out. If you don't like the answer, don't ask the question. And teenage girls will think that if she can make it, they can, too. We wind up paying for it through public assistance. Just like the jocks out there that think they don't need educations because they will go pro. Yeah, right.

Being married does not magically make people great parents. And how many marriages end in divorce?? Just because Huckabee may have been accurate in his statistics, doesn't mean he still wasn't slamming her for being unwed, or being judgmental regardless of whether or not he feels bad now. And if he does feel bad it's only because he can't afford to be cast in a negative light. Perhaps Natalie was supposed to forgo the event all-together, or hide the fact that she was pregnant?? Maybe wear a paper bag over her head in shame, not show her face in public at all?? Tell me, is it better for a child to witness the break down of their parent's marriage, or live in foster care never truly belonging to anyone... rather than be adopted by a family who would truly want them? Perhaps someone should ask some adoptable kids whether they'd rather be part of an unwed or gay family dynamic, or have no family at all. Or maybe ask the kid who's witnessing one drunk parent beat the crap out of his other parent if he's glad that mom and dad stayed together for the "sake of the kids", or if mom made a good choice rushing into marriage specifically because she was suddenly pregnant. How is that morally right? And why doesn't anyone ever spout off rhetoric over those ugly statistics?? Raising kids in or out of wedlock takes the SAME amount of dedication, and perseverance, love, and WORK and simply being married does not in anyway make it any easier. And as for blaming Natalie for being a bad influence – gimme a freaking break already! Parent's really need to stop blaming everyone else for their lack of parenting abilities. If you don't want your children growing up thinking one way or another then TEACH them and guide them and stop letting modern media raise your kids for you. Just because someone is on TV or is a self-proclaimed voice of God, doesn't mean he's right or that he knows what he's talking about.

What huckabee isn't thinking about is all those parents out there who in fact are married and have children and still can't support they're children even then. Usually ending up in divorce. I am someone who is having a kid out of wed lock. Granted my boyfriend and I are still together and plan to stay together but no one is trying glamour up Natalie's pregnancy.... she's pregnant and she keeping the baby and as of now the father plans to stick around. What more does huckabe want, at least she didn't get an abortion.

  69. did u even read the article?

Most of the posters here seem to have missed the point Huckabee is making. Women have freedom to make their own choices however we now have a government assistance program that has suffered budget cuts due to over use as well as economic crisis. Negligent fathers are not held accountable. There are young women who actually plan their family by the public assistance standards. Having worked in this field for years I am sad to say this is what goes on. Shows like teen mom and 16 and pregnant glamorize the teens in crisis and at times the media turns them into the headline of the week. The point Huckabee is trying to make is this is not reality. There are kids growing up on public assistance because of the very choice the parents or single mom made. The ugly truth is that most single unwed parents are not educated, not independently wealthy and have no job skills AND WE ALL feed, dress, house and provide health care for these families with our ever rising taxes while struggling to provide for our own. Huckabee is not judging anyone. He simply made a valid point.

Congratulations to Natalie Postman on her well deserved Oscar and on starting a new family. All these amazing blessings probably have left her breathless and so grateful for all the success she has. So many of us never get to live our dreams but she is. We listen to the media and their negative rederic day in and day out squeezing out our dreams and desires. They tell us how to spend our money, live our lives and that we need 'things' to make a happy home. Money only buys temporary happiness, its fleeting. We forget its a tool to make our lives easier, but we abuse it.

It's with this mind set that we fail as a nation. We want to scream about morals. Judge people who work hard for the very little they have. Now programs like Planned Parenthood have had their federal funding cut. A place were a mid to low income woman could get condoms, talk about medical care, and plan for the future.

He may not be attacking one hardworking woman but he is telling the women of our country what to do with their bodies. When will men stop trying to 'own' us like property? We vote in this country also, but when it comes to women's issues we're patted on the head and told they know what is best for me.

What is beat for me is to allow me to lake my choices. To have options so that if the inevitable happened, i.e. I became pregnant I would have some place to turn. But as it is the only way a woman with little education can get care is county or goverment help. It becomes a vicious cycle, because choosing to have no insurance or some type of insurance often is what keeps them from getting off assistance, because of the limitations the programs put on them.

So we are punished, yet again for attempting normalcy. Slapped on the wrists for wanting to better ourselves. So its go without and pray we can pay the medical or stay on assistance with little hope of getting off it.

So before a man with millions of dollars tells me about my 'moral' code I want him to consider the facts. Instead of trying to fix America's so called morality issue maybe we need to fix the reality we have now. No healthcare. Children shooting children. Bringing our Troops home! So many issues being grossed over. A true Christian would see the whole picture not just his view. Open up your perspective to see there is so much more than what one rich political figure sees. Ghandi said Be the change you want to be. It starts with us. Not a political figure.

I definitely differ with you, Mike Huckabee. When you singled out Natalie Portman when you could have chosen to approach it differently, like directing your opinions to 'people in the public eye', for example, you did "slam' and 'attack' Natalie Portman, specifically. (You are a public figure and your words are scrutinized and dissected more than those not in the public eye; I'm sure you know that.) Not at all gentlemanly for a 'family values' conservative man, much less compassionate and forgiving – most conservatives profess those are important values. What if she was your daughter, er, or granddaughter (your opinion on this seems to suggest you are from a more ancient time period). How would you feel if somebody singled her out like you did Natalie? And not to mention it was just dumb, politically, to single out an actress so beloved by so many millions. And an actress who has done so many good things in the world.

By the way, I am a single divorced Christian mother (and divorced not by my choice) and yet have enjoyed many years of not being 'poor' nor uneducated, and I know many single mothers who can say the same. My son is successful and a wonderful person. Maybe you should join the group of humanity who are humble instead of self-righteous Christians...and the 21st century.

Now if all goes well married or not, she will have the biggest accomplishment undoubtedly earned as well (being a mother!). I don't see how her decision portrays an 'easy single mother life' when she's worked very hard to get to where she is. Such simplistic views from another blah 'male' politician. If Miss Portman had a miscarriage in Georgia she would be in jail for murder according to their new law.

In Virginia if Miss Portman went to a clinic and was the six patient of the day.....she would be denied her legal right to an abortion….because of another dumb law passed by white men.

If Miss Portman had an abortion the GOPs would be calling her a murder.

Miss Portman is having her baby and is single......and still you are not happy.

Oh, by the way Mickey not all single mothers are ignorant and poor. Many of us have college degrees, professional jobs and take care of our kids without government assistance. Those single mothers who do struggle......what are you and your rich corporate buddies doing for them? Nothing, except paying them minimum wage and no healthcare benefits. The GOP helps no one except the rich. They refuse to give these hard working women educational services…so they can get a better job; healthcare and food.

The illegal wetbacks in VA get more assistance than an honest working, struggling Mother of two.....fighting to keep alive.

Mickey....I want you and your kind to do me a favor – don’t run for office and keep your mouth shut!!!!

Women of the United States of America…….we have to seek out, run and win elections at the local, state and federal levels. Our lives and the lives of our children will not improve until we have an equal vote and say in our government!!!!!!

Natalie Portman is a 29-year-old woman with a Harvard education and a successful career. Regardless of what field that career is in, I support her right to live her life as she chooses. Marriage doesn't work in this country. Most marriages end in divorce, and that's not good for kids either. Women are no longer property. We can do as we choose with our lives and our bodies. If she had gotten pregnant by insemination, I would be saying the same thing. Mike Huckabee seems to think that bullying people into getting married will solve our nations problems, when the truth is that education is what we need. We cut off funding to already over-crowded family planning clinics, and wonder why the poor and uneducated can't seem to make birth control work. We refuse to tell our children what to do if their desires overwhelm them, then wonder why teenagers have babies. Birth control of any form only works if you can afford it and know how to use it. A ring and a piece of paper won't alter the problem at all.

Yes, people are glamorizing the so called celebrities who are having babies out of wetlock,or they are stories of women becoming famous for nothing, except perhaps for having a certain kind of appearance such as the Kardashian sisters, Natalie Portman, etc. Just because they have money doesn’t mean they can ignore the social morals. , being a celebrity does not give anyone exclusive rights to do whatever they want in society, whether it is bad or good. I would prefer to turn my TV off , rather than watching some over-hyped "reality" show with spoiled, non-talented women, or 'movie stars' with no morals
We need to stop glamorizing the pretty-but-useless types and give credit to the real women in the world who are worth admiring. This has nothing to do with politics nor religion but rather family values. Period

It seems to me that we are all forgetting one thing. Jesus taught us to love one another, not to condemn. Whether a woman is a single mom or married or divorced, we should do our best to support her and her child with love because having been there myself, you can't judge someone until you've "walked a mile in their mocassins." I would rather be known for how much I loved an unwed mother or any sinner for that matterthan how I condemned them. The stick in my eye makes it hard to see somebody else's failures.

He's not even comparing apples to apples. Natalie Portman is 29 year old, Ivy League educated woman, obviously making a great amount of money where she can certainly afford to care for a child. The fact of the matter is she is happy about being pregnant and is going to care for her child without financial assistance. What difference does this make in the life and politics of Mike Huckabee? She's taking responsibility for her own life – isn't that he wants from the public? He would be chatising her if she decided not to have the baby.

It baffles me that, no matter what crazy statement one of the conservative politicians or pundits make, many of the average Republicans out there simply accept an apology or lame explanation from the offender. Ask your self how many times per year do you (hopefully a mature adult) has to apologize for saying something untrue or hurtful. Pretty rarely I bet. Yet the talking heads of America seem to be contantly having to explain that they "misspoke", they "did not mean to offend Jewish people", that they "really aren't racist", that they "really don't believe that Obama is a Muslim", that "rifle scope cross-hairs don't signify anything". Time to stand-up and grow-up folks ...or be the joke political party in the US.

Only that serveral conservatives have had to issue a follow-up press release declaring that they are not racists after making an unfortunate public statement. Again... how many normal Americans have had to apologize in the last year for saying something (privately or in public) that sounded racist.

I'm sorry to inform you, however, that even though you might not be a racist, you are in fact a bigot. The use of the word "Muzzie" makes this clear to all.

If your daughter gets pregnant before she's safely out of your house, granted it's a bummer. But don't go trying to blame Natalie Portman, you should have taught your own kid that having chidlren will suck all of the fun out of their life, and they ought to stay child-free as long as possible. How ANYONE could reach the age when the human reproductive cycle begins and NOT have learned that lesson somehow from either parent or the many signs that exist in our world, is a mystery. It's not Natalie Portman's pregancy that is eroding the moral fabric of our society. It's idjits like Mike Huckabee with their self-serving over-simplistic rhetoric esposing conservative family themes, that he tries to pass off as having statistical legitimacy.

No one "celebrates" single motherhood. You think all those single moms WANT to be single moms? The vast majority would greatly prefer to be married, but they've either divorced their husbands, or the father failed to commit, or just plain disappeared, or is a dangerous influence to the child and mother, or just isn't marriage material.

Marriage of the parents isn't always in the child's best interest. Although children of married parents generally to better than single parents, children of single parents do better than children of married parents who hate each other.

In addition to the strong points made by many, Huckabee insults young woman by implying they don't understand the difference between what an award-winning Hollywood actress and an urban teen can afford – but I suspect his intended audience isn't those women because they don't usually vote in large numbers. Nor is his audience the fathers of those unwed mothers. It should be, but he may realize the reasonable thing to say – gratify yourself or use a contraceptive – would alienate the conservatives whose only answer is "abstinence". It's really too bad, because some of his ideas (like moving toward a VAT) are worth discussing.

Same single mother was heralded and lauded amongst right wing conservatives and a "Hero" and a "Role Model". She goes to schools and gives speeches on abstinence. Not one word from 'Ol Huck. Let's remember that up until this particular single mother, most out of wedlock mothers were stereotyped as fat, black, ghetto women on welfare smoking crack with no family values whatsoever. Then this Alaskan girl does it and it's ok? Now this Jewish actress has the nerve to become pregnant while she's engaged? Oh no! The Huck can't stand for that! Some of you are so stuck on protecting Ms. Portman's celebrity that you are clearly missing the point. The point is that many people glamorize single motherhood. (Yes I know that she is engaged so she really isn't a single mother.) Portman was used to add shock value and to get people talking. She was only used because her name is hot right now due to winning an Oscar. Stop being tools of the media! This problem is not new for people to get all bent out of shape over it. There is nothing glamorous about a child being raised without a father. Too many children are born into this world by people without the resources in place to provide for them. This was not an attack on ALL single mothers so all of you with the exceptions need to really get over yourselves. You are part of a bigger group that unfortunately represents you poorly.

Dear Mr Huckabee, the last time I looked America is a free country and not a dictatorship. Also everyone should be responsible for their own actions. It is the lack of responsibility that is ruining this country. Miss Portman is not the problem, it is those who knowingly bring a child into this world when they are not in a financial position to take care of him/her that are the problem. Then what happens is that those who go to work, pay their taxes and wait until being financially stable before having children are punished by the burdens of paying for those who are not responsible. You also seem to forget that many single mothers are in that position by being abandoned by their husbands/boyfriends and not by choice. May be an idea to focus on big business that is ruining this country in pursuit of the mighty dollar.

I dnt know if natalie has ever said she considered herself a role model. Humans were born with god given free will. The advent of the "pill" and Roe vs Wade should not have changed society's perception but it did – in a big way. The problem I find with this situation is to assume that just because someone has enough dollars means they will/are a good or even competent parent. Those poorer income mother's may be just squeeking by but their kids may become more well-adjusted. As is always the case – time will tell.

I understand what he's saying about how most single mothers can't afford to hire a nanny or make all this money. However, not all single mothers are poor or uneducated. I'm a single mother and I have a good job and I'm educated with my Master's degree which I received both my Bachelor's and Master's degrees before I was 27. No I'm not rich and it's very hard being a single mother but my kids are not starving and I'm not on food stamps or Medicaid. My kids and I have Blue Cross Blue Shield health insurance. So yes I see what he's saying but he really just needs to shut up cause if you're going to paint a picture paint the whole picture not half of what you "think" you know about single mothers. If he wants to target someone he should target MTV's I'm 16 & Pregnant, that's what sending out the wrong message about having children out of wedlock not Natalie Portman. Some people love to jump on their high horse when they think they have a point but really he doesn't have a point and he makes no sense! It's 2011 I think having kids unmarried is pretty normal now, and he just proved why he would never be president of NOTHING!

Huckabee should know that not all single moms are on welfare. I have a bachlor's degree in Accounting and a job I've been at for 10 years. I made the mistake of falling for the wrong guy who left when his daughter was 3 weeks old. I say, he loss. And he really did lose out. Would I have liked to have been married? Sure, to the right person. But it doesn't make me a bad person. No I don't have a nanny and we struggle but I wouldn't trade her for the world. And my parents, who I'm sure wish I had met a nice man, got marriend and then had kids, lover her more than words can say. Huckabee go find something else to focus on – there are many other issues in the world that you can "try" to solve.

Mr. Huckabee is a fool. Natalie Portman is a very well educated woman. Despite her financial success and stardom I'm fairly positive that with her Harvard degree she would be fully capable of getting a well paying job. Perhaps most unmarried mothers are poor, I understand that. This is irrelevant, unlike the majority of people, people such as Natalie and "Mr" Huckabee don't have to worry about such trivial things as money. So why then criticize another financially successful person? Because he is an over opinionated dick.

I see a lot of comments stating, in a nutshell, "Huckabee is stupid, because Natalie Portman can support her child." I don't believe Mike Huckabee was criticizing Natalie Portman for not being able to support her child as a single mother. As a matter of fact, he identifies Portman as one who is perfectly able to support a child out of wedlock. He then criticized Hollywood for glorifying single parenthood and out-of-wedlock pregnancy.

I don't think Portman is a good example of how Hollywood is glamorizing single parenthood, though. It's my understanding that she announced her engagement at the same time as her pregnancy.

Another common thing I see in the comments is one along the lines of "I'm a single parent and I do fine, so Huckabee is totally wrong." Once again, I don't believe Huckabee said that every single parent in the United States is poor. So, if you are a single parent who is doing well, financially, that doesn't necessarily disprove Huckabee's statements about many single parents in the US having to survive below the poverty line and being unable to afford the time or money to go to college.

It seems like this article could be twisting Huckabee's statement into an attack on Portman and all women who get pregnant at a young age, or out of wedlock. I know that he is a Christian with strong convictions about these things, but I would still like to see the whole interview. I'm curious about that parts that were left out.

Having said all of that, I'm inclined to agree that Natalie Portman's pregnancy is not like a typical out-of-wedlock pregnancy situation.

Ok I usually don't comment, but this one really ticks me off. First of all I was that "Single Mother" however I was married but he left when times got hard and he couldn’t handle the pressure. However we still stayed legally married for 10 years. I live with my boyfriend now and we don’t share any biological children together but we both have kids from our prior relationships and I don’t call myself a single mother simply because we don’t have that paper or I his last name. We’ve been a blended family for 9 years am I a poor example to my children because I am not married to him. I don’t believe that. I don’t see what difference it makes or how much better it is simply because two people share a single piece of paper. How many couples (unmarried) with children live together? How many couples (unmarried) with children work for a living? Where are the numbers on that? I have a college education a job and I take care of my own as I have done since I had my first child at 18, so Mr. Huckabee what’s your take on that? Many people with no children live this way and mind you all single mothers don’t collect welfare, and all children of single mothers don't live in poverty or starve. Simply because you marry doesn’t grantee you will not become a single parent at some point. You will be a divorced single parent.

This issue here is not whether you are married, single, etc. The issue is can you provide well for your kids. Some married people can provide well for them and others cannot. Likewise, some single people can and others cannot. Having said that - Natalie P can provide well for her children and no one should criticize her.

He makes it sound like you should not be a single mom - which is BS. However - as a single mom – you should be a good provider.

There will be many milestones in a child's life that at times you will wish you had the other parent there to share it with. But like a trooper you suppress how you really feel, move forward and don't let it affect your everyday duties. If I could choose a two parent home that would be my first choice, but you make the best out of your situation and try and raise healthy happy well adjusted children ALONE

Yes, but Natalie Portman is not a "single mother". She is not married, but she is not only still very much with the baby's father, they are planning to be married. So that point is moot.

Movie stars like Portman are humans and their lives includes challenging twists like everyone else. No one said that because Portman is famous she needs to live by a "code" to protect any one who follows her from ever making a bad decision. Let's grow up and stop pointing the finger and start working on real problems. I'd like to see Huckabee be more critical about his peers, in both parties, because then maybe some relevant changes could be made.

Apparently some of us are still stuck in the stone ages; women have been having children without being married for a very long time. It's not about "marriage" its about a child being wanted and having loving parents. What Natalie Portman does is none of Mike Huckabees business, maybe he should worry about doing his own job. I also agree with someone who posted abut MTV, they glorify teen pregnancy and idiotic behavior, maybe someone should critize them.

So your saying everyday of your single motherhood has been easy breezy? What are you people reading? You’re not understanding what he wrote. Did he put down single motherhood! No he said it is hard being a single mother for most of the undereducated everyday people out there! I'm a single mom too, with a six figure income and money wasn't the problem, having an extra person there to bare the burdens that was the problem. I'm not a superwoman doing it all myself was not easy. You guys want to sugar coat single motherhood, but woman need to know the raw gritty truth ITS NOT EASY! Sure you will make it, you have no choice, but the road down single motherhood is a bumpy one.

How dare someone like Huckabee and others condescend to people (single mothers) who have more integrity in their little finger than he does in his entire being?!?! And here's a newsflash–Barack Obama was raised by a single mother and guess what? He is President and I am sure you never will be!!! At least I will not be voting for you and I am sure that many, many others will not vote for you either!

What are you offended about and who are you offended for? I'm a single mother and his statement didn't offend me in the least because what he said is truth. ITS HARD DOING IT ALL ON YOUR OWN! Sure we single moms do it all and don’t speak a word of complaint to anyone not even the kids, but late at night when we're running through our long list of "to dos", we feel the burden of responsibility and we fight back the feeling of being overwhelmed. That's the truth of single motherhood and anyone who says different either has a GREAT family support system or are just lying to herself.

There is a HUGE difference between being an unmarried couple having a baby and a single mother raising her child without a father. The latter being significantly more difficult. Natalie Portman's baby will presumably have both parents, and whether they are married at the time of conception is no one elses business.

How can anyone come across as moral and righteous, with all their 'values', and at the same time have no values when it comes to people's healthcare being provided and protected...to value capitalism and big corporate profits, but de-value a persons right to jobs, education, etc. How can someone like him live with himself and justify going to church learning how to live a good life, being giving to others, look out for thy neighbor, and then minutes later argue against the common good when it comes to healthcare, education, jobs, etc.?

She's supports animal rights and she has also supported antipoverty activities. She has traveled to Uganda, Guatemala, and Ecuador as the Ambassador of Hope for FINCA International, an organization that promotes micro-lending to help finance women-owned businesses in developing countries.

Of course Mike Huckabee doesn't find Natalie Portman to be a good role model. Who would want their child to graduate from Harvard. Oh did I mention she's an Oscar winner.

I agree with you marky. Amen. Nearly everyone responding here to huckabees comments are totally off topic and out of context. Truth of the matter is that people DO idolize movie stars, and since countless stars have now got pregnant out of wedlock its gotten to the point where it is glamorized and idealized by people. I also find it ironic that Christians are attacked if they say anything that upsets "popularity" and labeled as "judgmental" when 85% of you on this comment board have been 3x more hateful and judgmental than anything that huckabee said – and it passes as totally justified. What is so horrific about having morals?? What is so awful about being married first?? It is what works the best for the sake of every member in the family. I think everyone knows this deep in their hearts, but pride and guilt doesn't allow us to admit it. So what if he singled out Natalie Portman? He could have said anyone's name. I also am happy to inform everyone that bristol palin tours the country advising girls to abstain and not make the decisions she did. Yall are greatly missing the point.

Huckabee... did you miss something? SHE'S ENGAGED. To the FATHER of that child... so all of a sudden it's a huge moral problem that she's not officially married yet? She's not a single mother. Marriage is for the protection of the family - once you have children, it should become about them first, and self-centered adults make terrible parents.

That is the problem with socity these days we should not be worshipping actors, models, or sports prayers. She is human just like everyone else and has a right to live her life so how she chooses. I do take offense to his comments when he says "Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can't get a job, and if it weren't for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and would not get healthcare." I am a single mother and I am not poor nor uneducated. I don't live on public assistance and my child is not starving. Despite our liberal-minded environment, Huckabee is very right, if not specifically for moral traditions. Financially, wedlock LOWERS your taxes. Wedlock also forces a lot of young parents to become the one thing that our last few generations have consistently pampered them against doing: growing up and learning to cooperate (note how I avoided the term "compromise." I've seen young unmarried parents split apart because one is simply unwilling to overlook small problems or misgivings from their partner, and the fallout stays in place because pride (mistakening interpreted as "dignity") overshadows reason and keeps the resulting single parent locked in a lifetime of poverty. Let's not forget the harm that living without two parents does to children...let's just accept realities. Very few children from single parents will become that superstar that goes to an Ivy League or become some big time entrepreneur – they are much more likely to go jail. As backwards sounding as Huckabee seems, he has some words of wisdom for this generation.

Why doesn't Mike Huckabee blame the men? If these men are so great why aren't the women married to them? Probably in many cases because they don't want to be, probably because these men showed their true colors and the women actually felt they and their children would be BETTER off without the father around all the time. It must be nice for someone like Mike Huckabee to have such a simplistic view of the situation of single mothers. Another man spouting off about what is best for women. Keep judging people–that really makes a great leader. I will not vote for you!

Marriage isn't sacred...no one follows any rules any more and you have a 50% chance of ending up divorced... then you have to pay for a divorce and your more broke then you started off with... every child has 2 parents. just so happens some parents choose to leave.. make it simple and dont get married, waste of money. a relationship is built out of love and respect and if you have that good luck!

Sheesh...people have always had "children out of wedlock" long long before it became the thing for Hollywood stars to do. Besides being married doesn't guarantee anything, my husband left me when my child was less than a yr old and I had to raise her myself w/no support from him or anyone else he didn't even give her emotional support; and we both (daughter and I) turned into successful responsible adults. Marriage is way over-rated.

You both might be successful and responsible, but there are deep rooted issues psychologically that result from being a single parent or the child of a single parent whether its from never getting married, the father leaves, the mother leaves, or divorce or death happens.we ask ourselves why our society has so many problems – the answer lies in the destruction of the family unit. Psychological repercussions are not comparable to how successful or responsible a person is or becomes. and yes, I grew up in a divorced single parent home and struggle with psychological repercussions from that. I'm sorry, but your blinders are on if you're saying there are no problems or issues with being a single parent. Not being married only teaches our children to have commitment problems and just to go around and sleep with whomever you want and have kids and that can be your "family." Sorry but that's not okay.

Most commentators here are missing his point. His point is simply that NP is a very successful but unfortunately unrealistic portrayal of a situation that leaves many women struggling to make ends meet. This isn't an attack on single mothers. He's not saying that you can't be a single mother and successfully raise your children. He is simply saying that if you choose to go this route, expect it to be more difficult than glamorous (and are there REALLY any single parents out there who would refute the reality of this??).

No his point is to make another publicity stunt statement. He has no business – NO BUSINESS – commenting on Ms. Portman's personal life. She is not a poor single mother and the fact that she is pregnant should be celebrated and congratulated, not scorned. He wouldn't comment if she were a man. Consider this – how many Hollywood men who have impregnated women does he point a finger at for having children out of wedlock? How many Hollywood men, or men in general, come under his attack for being a "bad example" to other men out there when they help conceive a child? He is a hypocrite and poorly informed.

If you want to be the best parent (single or married) do so! If you choose to be the "product" of a single parent household, that is a choice you are making. My son does see his dad every other weekend – and he does have both of us. It is a choice that I am making to help him be well rounded, make good decisons, and live happy – all choices we make.

I guess Mike Huckabee doesn't need to look at the US Census Bureau data before issuing a misogynistic rant about motherhood in the United States. But what would I expect from the right? Oh, and Mike, she's not a starlet, she's an Oscar winner. She's an artist. And it's entirely possible that she will love her child as much every other single and married and divorced mother currently residing in the United States. Heaven forbid she actually serve as a role model for responsible behavior for having successfully navigated teen stardom, Harvard University, and her career. No, let's instead label her irresponsible and a blight upon our civilization. Nice touch, Mike.

Oh, and Mike, the US census bureau lists the percentage of children receiving medicaid at 22% and food stamps at 23%. This would seem to indicate that MOST of the single mothers are doing fine for their children. But the truth is seldom convenient to the right, now, is it?

I'm tired of people bashing other people(celebs) "for sending the wrong message for young people". Anyone in the media should not be the role model for children – THE PARENTS ARE!! if you have a child that looks at Miley Cyrus or Natalie Portman as an example on how to live their lives then their parents FAILED! Charles Barkley said this years ago, "I am not a role model for your children." and he's right. The bashing of people smoking on TV or in movies, the crap they put on MTV or anything on TV or film is for entertainment purposes only – not to teach your children to make good choices in life – that's YOUR job as a parent. Children should be looking at the life of their parents as an example of good behavior and if that parent happens to be a single parent then so be it. it should be a lesson on how to handle life when it doesn't go according to plan. If someone CHOOSES to be a single parent then it's their job to teach that child that you can still live a good life and be a good, decent person and be a single parent. If they became a single parent due to a poor decision (no protection) then it's your job to teach your child how to turn that poor decision into having the best life and how to overcome and persevere when life doesn't go exactly how you planned. That's YOUR job – not a celebrity.

Natalie Portman is a 30 year old adult with a good head on her soldiers with a focus on life. She doesn't need to "Dance with the Stars" or to publish a book to gain notoriety.

Bristol Palin graduated with her HS classmates as a teenage mom. It was not easy but she did it with the help of her family. The father of her son is a dead beat dad. Bristol Palin is raising her son on her own and doing a good job. She is providing for her son and is blessed for the opportunities that are out there becasue of her famous mom. The girl has paid a price though because she has been trashed inside/out by everybody.

I grew up in a single parent home and let me tell you IT IS NOT EASY my mom had money and was a hardworking business woman BUT there is nothing I mean nothing that can replace the FATHER figure in a childs life. I still love my dad after all said and done and I wish I spent more time with him . I'm 30 now but I still remember when he left like yesterday. I think its very ignorant to go about stating how your kids are fine let me tell you now, they are not fine. A girls need her father and boy needs his father even if its once a month. So do everything in your power to make that happen and STOP trying to be both parents.

Most women who end up being single mothers don't choose to be that way. Most times, either a mutual separation happens or the man just flat out leaves-which is what you said happened to your family. Then you have a mother who loves her child and does everything she can to fill that gap. Shame on you for not praising your mother for being the parent who stayed by your side. Why is the focus on the mothers who stay and raise their families and not on the men who are not there?

So this is one of the problems that I have with what you said. While it is clear that you still have pain over your father not being around as much as you would have liked please understand that no woman who lives a normal life chooses to be a single mom. It is not something most of us wanted for our children. So don't just assume that we want to play both roles. To assume that a woman hasn't done everything in her power to keep her family together is absurd. Perhaps the father is physically, verbally or emotionally abusive. Maybe he is an alcoholic or addicted to drugs. For me these things didn't even show up until after the baby got here and the pressure was too much for him. Most women are single moms because the dad has nothing positive to bring to the table. So I would rather my children be mad at me than abused by a man who helped create them. Period

Meg......having the memory of a father that is dead and was present in your life probably wont give you the same insecurity of knowing your father is alive and not in your life.....you deal with two different scenarios and can not compare the two , none of which is worse or better. but the insecurity that comes with the latter is what i am talking about.
those saying single mothers can't help it or don't choose i do understand but when you go around BOASTING like some ppl on this thread and stating how your kids are FINE because you have the money and education and so that should be enough is WHAT concerns me. i have seen mothers who for this particular reason either 1) don't tell the father of the children 2)fight with the father so the kids don't see him forgetting completely about the kids . 3) bad mouth the father.
and then go around claiming they are WONDER WOMEN when the kids suffer in silence

If you had a dead beat dad, I'm sorry for you. However, my mother and father divorced when I was very little and he was and still is very much a part of my life. His financial situation is one where he couldn't really contribute much in terms of child support, but the love was still there. My sisters and I turned out much better being raised by my single mother than we would have if our parents stayed together, fighting all the time. Not all single parents fit the same mold, and in this day and age, most children will end up being raised by single parents or unwed parents. This does not mean that both parents don't love them, they are just no longer in love with each other.

This is exactly what huckabee is referring to. So many celebrities have had (and are having) children outside of marriage that it has become normalized. Your comment proves that 100%. Morality is lost whenever a person "does whatever THEY think is okay" because of a selfish desire for pleasure and not thinking of anyone but themselves. And just because someone is successful and makes millions doesn't give them a hall pass to be idolized for their immoral decisions. Everyone is born with a moral compass – its just a matter of who will listen and who will ignore.

And do you really think he had enough time in his FIVE minute interview to list the countless celebs who have had kids without getting married? Hopefully you exercise more logical thinking in your own personal life than what your comment displays.

So Huckabee runs his fat mouth and you want to blame Bristol Palin. Why is the woman always the one getting blamed?

Let's hear what you have to say about Huckabee a former preacher that condems a woman that is pregnant and can take care of her child but Huckaee had not problem forgiving a convited felon and making him eligible for parole. Nine years later the convicted violent felon that was out of jail because of Huckabee killed four people in Oakland, CA.

Where was his ranting and raving when Bristol Palin was preggers?? Very biased and hypocritical... There are plenty of unfit mothers out there, married and all. Just because she is not married does not make her an awful person or an unfit mother in any way. And she's 30, not 16. She has every right to decide if and when she wants to have a child. And she's NOT flaunting it or glorifying it at all. I think she's a perfectly fine young woman to look up to, and it's completely unfair to single her out.

I couldn't find a single article which talked about Huckabee's negative reaction to Bristol Palin's pregnancy. Of course it was controversial, but you really think the Republicans themselves would want to rub salt in the wound by degrading the daughter of the 2008 Vice Presidential Nominee?

I guess my point is that it's not right to single out certain people for the choices they make. He needed to address the topic on a more broad basis, not to name names. The only reason Natalie is being ridiculed is because she's not married, or maybe also because she's wealthy. It's very judgmental to base someone's parenting skills on whether they're married or not.

But that doesn't meant that I'm dirt poor. I know my child is taken care of. I'd rather be broke by spending money on her than throwing it away on junk. What Mr. Huckabee and many others forget to realize is Celebrities of any caliber are not meant to be role models for anyone of any age. They are people just like anyone else. Role models should be Parents, siblings, family members teachers all the people in your lives who should be setting the good examples. He states: "Not everybody hires nannies, and caretakers, and nurses," he says. "Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can't get a job, and if it weren't for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care.
Well my response to that is....then don't get pregnant! It's pretty simple use birth control you can get it free at any clinic. I am so tired of hearing of these single mothers with 5 kids 5 baby daddies and we are paying the bills for them. Believe me my heart goes out to all the Single mothers everywhere who have had their husband or boyfriends either pass away or have an unfortunate accident or a valid hardship those situations I have complete support and sympathy for but some of these women who just don't know how to say NO or don't SIMPLY protect themselves from pregnancy I say enough is enough already if you have 1 child that the state is already paying for and you go and have another then you should have to assume the resposibilty. My parents had 5 children and both worked hard to take care of us no one gave them anything people are getting to used to hand outs in this country not that I would ever want a child to do without food or medical care but there has to be a line drawn some where so the people that do the right thing and work hard aren't always paying for other peoples irresponsibilities. Ok I will get off my soap box for today.

While celebrities are not menat to b role models, they end up in the role because society takes its cues from what's happening in the world. The more visible the activity, the more likely it is to be emulated. And while that showshow stupid people can be, people can be stupid. Natalie Portman should understand that if she wants to keep her private life private, she needs to shut up about it. This story has nothing to do with Bristol Palin. It has to do with Huckabee running his big mouth where it does not belong. Natalie Portman is a grown woman and can take care of herself and her child. Huckabee needs to shut-up.

Sarah Palin raised her daughter to take responsibility for her own action and she did. The girl is raising her son on her own and providing for most of the Childs’s need except for some child support from the dead beat dad.

I don’t see Bristol collecting welfare checks or food stamps or asking for others to provide for her care and the baby’s care.

She has owned up to being a teenage mother and doesn’t recommend it to other teens. She recommends that you don’t get pregnant period until you are ready and can afford to take care of your children yourself.

Look at Goldie Hawn, she's been with Kurt Russel 25 years! and they have a wonderful family unit. It's not about the piece of paper, it's about the love & repesct you have for one another and the child(ren). If Mr. Huckabee is so worried about the poverty of unwed mothers, he should take some of his fortune and pay-it-forward to help them out – it comes bakc ten-fold. BTW my mother was single (until I was older) and we didn't lack for a thing, I had everything I needed. I am a Christian who believes God loves everyone!

He probably understands every part of "fiance", just as the rest of us do. It still only means "we are screwing" and we might get hitched. How many "fiances" have never become husbands?

Here is a better question that your post should have asked. Once he found out that she was pregnant, why not just go ahead and get married? Why the delay? If you are "going to" why not just "do"? That is a much better question than the one you asked

I have absoluetly no love, or even like, for Huckabee, but he is right. All of this glorification of unwed Hollywood women, and I am not only talking about Natalie, but what about the others who make it the "fad" to have babies out of wedlock (including Sarah Palin's daughter), is counter-productive. The danger is that we are normalizing that behaviour by maiking it seem okay and a totally acceptable thing to do. That is an entirely different issue. I agree with you that husband abuse is something that should be addressed. There are also other examples of behavior that Hollywood plays up that should be addressed too, such as glorifying jerks like Charlie Sheen, who are nothing but rebelious kids who were never disciplined by his parents, glorifying women who steal husbands, like Angelina Jolie. But you have to take each bad example one at a time.

The fact is that Natalie, Sarah Palin's daughter, Nicole Richie, Halle Berry, etc are all seiinng bad examples

@George Smith – No one should feel rushed into getting married. There wouldn't even be such a thing as "fiance" or "engaged" if there wasn't a period in between. Every relationship is different, and people do what works best for them, no matter what the reasons may be. So many people feel like they have to get married, especially when they're pregnant, and a lot of times it ends in divorce. Marriage is a HUGE commitment, and when the time is right than so be it, but it's not always the second you fall in love. I actually applaud Natalie and her fiance for waiting. Here's a question for you: What's the point in rushing it??

Please, spare me the defense of Huckabee. He is picking on a young woman for political gain.

Will his unabiding support for marriage lead him to attack Newt "sorry about your cancer honey but I want to divorce you and marry my intern" Gingrich? Nah.

Will he cravenly suck up to Rush Limbaugh who treats marriage like a rental agreement? Of course he will.

This gutless excuse for a candidate could have attacked Bristol Palin for appearing on not one but two reality shows and for writing book all because she is a famous single mom but he doesn't do that because he is afraid of angering Sarah Palin's followers.

He is just taking a cheap shot at a woman who, after finding out she was pregnant, is marrying the baby's father which Republicans like him used to want to encourage via tax breaks.

Unfortunately, though, my daughter does not have the means that Ms. Portman and others have. Natalie Portman is just one of the many celebrities that have chosen this route, and have it appear acceptable to many.

How exactly is that best for the kid? What's best for the child is stability – in whatever form works for everyone- and to have parents who love them. Not necessarily parents who are married. Unlike, most of the single women in this county, she actually has MONEY.. ha ha ha.. She can easily afford this.. There is no comparison with real people. Besides she could hire probably the nicest guy in the world as a role model someday too. It's doesn't matter when you have this much money.

mostly @A – To single out Natalie Portman as being one of the sole reasons why teen or wedlock pregnancy is being glorified is ridiculous, and THAT'S what he's saying. If he were making a general statement about this topic as a WHOLE and not calling out specific people, then I can understand it, but you can't single out one person, who I feel has nothing to do with teen pregnancy and is in no way flaunting or glorifying this. And Natalie is 30, not 16. She has every right to decide when and if she has a child. And Matt's right, I think she's a great example of a mother, regardless of if she's married or not. There are plenty of unfit parents out there who ARE married.

I think Matt's point is instead of focusing on one irrelevant person, maybe he should go out to speak to high schools and voice his concerns in a more constructive and productive way.

I agree with Huckabee. That is what is wrong with the country now we don't have morals anymore. If we had the morals that our ancestors had, the country would be a lot better. People can smooth it over by every excuse they can find, but the bottom line is we have got to bring good morals back into the country.

Huckabee is so right! Fox is so right to air his opinion! Hooray for judgemental conservatives! Having a child out of wedlock should be wholeheartedly condemned, not celebrated! I am sure Huckabee and Fox have the same message for Bristol Palin....cricket, cricket....

Perhaps you should stop worrying about other people and worry about yourself. Natalie probably has no significance in your life what so ever. So calm down, no one is hurting you. And get real, a normal woman is not going to decide to get pregnant without being married because natalie portman did it. If you are in love and chose to have a child, It shouldn't matter if you are married or not.

Has Huckabee ever critisized Sarah Palin's daughter for being unwed and having a baby? Of course not. She is a fellow Rebublican. At least Natalie Portman is engaged and even if she wasn't, makes enough money to provide very well for her baby. Fair and balanced. Yeah right.

@A the girls on teen mom got pregnant to be on TV long before portman got pregnant. Teen Mom has been around muhc longer than 7ish months. so you can't blame Portman for the girls on Teen Mom.

People...he did not single her out, he was asked specifically about her and commented accordingly. you may not agree with him but it's not like he's on a Natalie portman bashing crusade. He answered a freaking question. READ THE STORY...the problem these days are not repubs or dems it's the public in general either not giving the whole story or reading & not paying attention to the whole story.

@A The problem with your extremely flawed anaology is that Ms. Portman is already engaged. And they will likely be married before or soon after the birth of her child. SO she will likely never, or only for a short time be "a single mother".
Natalie Portman lives in the spotlight, and it's not like she has a reputation of having flings. When she did become pregnant she became engaged to the father of the baby. How about wishing her some happiness insetead of trying to condemn her.

I read some of these replies and I have to ask, "Did you even read this article before you posted?" Mike Huckabee answered a specific question during an interview, did not insult Natalie Portman, or anyone else, and gets blasted because you don't like Republicans, period. I have a daughter who had a child while unmarried, and truthfully, none of my Christian friends turned on her, treated her badly, or have treated the child badly in any way. That doesn't change the fact he wishes every day he had a father, nor does it change how difficult it's been to meet his needs with only us to help. No one seems to recognize what effect our decisions have on the child–the child seems to be the least important person in all of your equations. That's what Mike Huckabee is saying..... He didn't criticize Natalie or any other person. It's also getting old to hear you say no Republican says anything about Bristol Palin; they've said plenty, but you don't listen to the truth, just your own opinion. How about you pay attention to the facts instead of blindly complaining just because another lib did?

What about your grandson's father? He had a choice in staying around as well?

Even if Huckabee wasn't slamming Natalie Portman, he WAS criticizing single mothers in general. Yes, single moms are often poor and rarely in a position to actually raise their children, but what about the fathers? Why must we always harp on young women who get pregnant and the not the men who helped put them in that situation? Trust me, very few people who get pregnant out of wedlock when they're poor and can barely afford to feed themselves do it on purpose. Would you rather they abort? Give up their children for adoption (unless you're white, the chances of your baby being adopted are slim to nill)?

Vintage Lydia, the fact is that she got pregnant using 2 kinds of BC, and he walked straight out the door when he found out she was pregnant. Guys don't always stay around the way we hope they will, and without marriage, the courts can't make them and society doesn't either.

While everyone is singing and dancing about the heroic single moms and how the dads can be around all they want; what about Halle Berry and how she's dragging her baby's father through court just because he wants regular visitation and to be on the birth certificate. I see that all the time; once the baby gets here, Mom thinks it's all hers and every decision is, too. Once again, court would decide, if there was a marriage.

Hey I love Natalie Portman !! No matter what i loved her as Padme. She can Act, she deserved that Oscar for Black Swan. It was a great movie. Whether the public likes it or not she got Pregnant !!!! It happens it's a fact of life. Sometimes u don't expect it. Sometimes life just happens and Sometimes Mr Huck. Even if u are Married your Husband Leaves or Dies that's Life. It Shouldn't matter if u have one parent or 2. Reguardless people get all wrapped up in that "Perfect Family" Setting. When In Reality if u Have 1 Good Parent Thats all u need.

This guy is a complete moron. The child has loving parents that have the means to provide. Who cares if they are married or not married. Since half of marriages fail what exactly is his point? 50% success rate is ok? What he should be preaching is planned parenting. Parenting when you have the means financiAlly and emotionally to deal with raising a child. Marriage has nothing to do with this. False logic.

Here's reality, so his words are truth: Single mothers were twice as likely as their married counterparts to be in financial hardship, despite being twice as likely to be in full-time employment. Both of these factors were independently associated with onset in single mothers. The link between them and onset was via their association with humiliating or entrapping severe life events. Single parents were at a much raised risk of experiencing these events. Onset was also more likely to follow such an event when women had poor self-esteem and lack of support, both of which were more common among single mothers. These risk factors were more frequently found among those in financial hardship. Financial hardship was also related to risk of having a chronic episode (lasting at least a year), of which single parents were also at greater risk. The majority of chronic episodes among single mothers had their origins in prior marital difficulties or widowhood and rates of chronicity reduced with length of time spent in single parenthood. to begin with, since huckabee is a babtist minister, I believe it is a violation of seperation of church and state that he
even run for public office. He has NO business commenting on someone elses life but his own, BUT since he has,
he is now fair game. I'm sure that his "opinion" has something to do with no one wanting to "DO" his own children, I mean look at those obese, ugly prodginy.
Mind your own business mr. huckabee

      @Mike tacoma*
Separation of church and state means that the government can never dictate what religion/denomination you are to practice. To word differently, there will never be one government dictated denomination that all US citizens are forced to practice. It does not mean that God cannot be included in politics, its quite the opposite. This has been taken out of context by the (most often liberal) media to pursue their own agenda. Please reference where the term "wall of separation between church and state" originated from: Thomas Jeffersons letter in response to the Danbury Baptists. The reason why we came to America in the firstplace was to escape religious oppression in England. Not everyone wanted to be a part of the Church of England and Jefferson was assuring the danbury Baptists that this oppression would not happen over here in America. Know your history, because media loves to distort and brainwash. Google me, I'm a history buff and I know I'm correct.
