Lady Gaga's 'Born This Way' video - What's the verdict?

The egg/incubator that carried Lady Gaga as she arrived to the Grammys? Oh, that was only the beginning.

The pop star stretched the rebirth concept even further with her video for “Born This Way,” which premiered Monday. Between the unicorn, the outer-space, kaleidoscopic birthing scenes and that giant pink ponytail juxtaposed against skeleton makeup a la model Rick Genest (also known as Zombie Boy, who appears alongside Gaga in the video), it’s understandable that the reaction has swung from positive to negative and every bit of confused in between.

The just over seven-minutes long clip, which Gaga directed with fashion photographer Nick Knight and choreographer Laurieann Gibson, has got a lot to take in.

It all begins with the “manifesto of mother monster,” with Gaga weaving a tale of creation: “On GOAT, a government owned alien territory in space, a birth of magnificent and magical proportions took place,” she explains. It was the birth of a "new race, a race within the race of humanity, a race which bears no prejudice, no judgment, but boundless freedom.”

Yet at the same time, there was also the birth of evil…so of course Gaga had to break out the big guns.

And then – and only then – do we get to the song and dance segment of this saga.

While Time believes that this video is proof that Gaga is “still so very, very strange,” Entertainment Weekly thinks she could've kicked it up a notch.

"Once...'Born This Way' proper begins, it becomes a much more standard video. Born-again Gaga line-dances in a chain bikini that seems left over from 'Telephone.' Honestly, I’m surprised she didn’t go further with this. Since she’s just been born, shouldn’t she be in her birthday suit? For modesty—if such a thing concerns her—she could be covered in glittery amniotic fluid!"

And then there are the references to source. While Gaga told BBC's Radio 1 that the video's "very inspired by, especially in the beginning, Salvador Dalí and Francis Bacon, the surrealist painters," Rolling Stone also interpreted hints of Madonna and Fritz Lang's "Metropolis."

But perhaps we’re missing the point by trying to understand it, and should simply enjoy it for what it is.

“It's part fantasy, part hopeful reality. It's about the future and the past (especially at clip's end, when Gaga sports Madonna's near-trademarked tooth gap)," MTV observes, "but really, all of that pales in comparison to the sheer spectacle of the thing.”

What did you think of the video?

Wow! I am disgusted with the fact that children and adults look up to this woman and even go as far as idolize her. You can call me sheltered, closed-minded, or even a fanatic christian, but this video is totally anti-christ. Please reevaluate your beliefs if you claim this is in line with christianity.

This video is beautiful! It's full of so many symbols for a better race. I think it's ironic how everyone is judging the video so seriously and so harshly. The whole message Gaga puts out is for us not to judge, but rather accept people for who they are. Born this Way <3.

I think it is sad that society is coming to a point where they are unable to understand the artistic nature of any of Gaga's videos, fashion, songs, etc. They're all symbolic in some nature. I freakin' love when Gaga jerks off to the camera! HELL YES.

Its hilarious to see how people get worked up defending her as if proceeds from her music were gonna come their way. It's a mediocre song that she worked everyone up for, that's all it is. Nothing about the music is new or innovative and the dancing reminds me of the zombies from Thriller. The video reminds me of overworked just comes out FLAT. Inspiration should come from people of character that have truly done selfless acts to change the world......NOT from those looking to become a "Fame Monster".

I am fine of Lady gaga. She is full of inspiration and has been able to create an image that many artists have not been able to. What amazes me about her is she is so young but so mature. I wonder how she gets the ideas to make such complicated yet interesting videos. She surely will be aroung for quite a while..

Some of the ignorance about Gaga is so predictable.. First of all, she is doing a second video to the song and its all for charity.. And second, if maybe for once you opened up your mind, and stopped being a close minded individual, you would realize that she is a million times more sincere than any other artist today! She really cares about her fans, always gives it her all and is extremely talented.. So if you don't like her, you might as well get used to her because she is here to stay, and this is just the beginning!

PS. Without negativity and stupidity, we smart people would have nothing to fight for, so thank you for the motivation! 😉

I am a little disappointed that she seems to be trying to be Madonna though

Video was amazing! Seeing some of these comments make me laugh. Lady GaGais not doing lots of good with her fame. She acts and dresses the way she wants to and is not going to give into society and what they think of her. That's why she's as popular as she ia. Born This Way is a statement of loving yourself for who and what you are. It shouldn't matter what religion, race, or background you come from. .God loves you no matter what. GaGa is trying to bring peace to the world, she may not follow societies standards and guidelines but she is trying to make a difference in this world. Maybe people need to listen to her talk and her philosophy about life and quit judging her for how she dresses and looks. For once there isn't an artist scared of speaking her mind, she is here to stay. GAGA was Born This Way! For all those people who live by the bible, I know it says do no judge others. Well that's exactly what your doing. Quit being hypocrites.

It's okay to raise people's conscious about something but it is obvious that Gaga is just using her gay crusading as a way to get even more famous. If tomorrow everyone stopped caring about gay rights and started being really into freeing North Korea, you can bet she'd follow suit.

As "really" said, nothing wrong with singing a song about a particular issue, but Gaga is basically beating a dead horse with her crusade of "gay rights." It's not sincere nor is it believable; she's just pandering to what is the topic du jour. She forces the "message" way too hard, and it isn't even done in an intelligent way. The song and the music video is simply pop garbage, a sad attempt at trying to be a modern day Express Yourself with a contrived "i support gay rights.equality for all" twist.

Vralbany, I believe you may have fallen prey to the same type of thinking you claim to detest: intolerance! Anyway this reminds me of the George Clinton Mothership phenomenon that swept funk circles in the 70's, with the biggest difference being that Parliament actually had talent! And their only real agenda was "the preservation of the the motivation of the hips!"

mini movie? So Michael Jackson. The song is a rip off of Madonna. No, I don't think it is flattering to steal other peoples ideas. She's no better than Puffy, ripping off 80's artist. If it weren't for Perez Hilton making her famous then she wouldn't be all about the gays. She has sold out and she is using the gays as a platform to make money. If gays want straights to see them as being the then, find a better spokesman, some one the straights can relate too. And quit making being gay a life style, that's like saying it's a choice. That being said, Gaga has lost her stuff, she has jumped the shark with this whole rebirth crap. The song is even worse then Madonna's.

I like all of Lady Gaga's songs and videos, she is a great musician and she makes great videos. Another thing is commenting on some of the other comments, she is a good role model for gays/lesbians because she tells it how it is and she believes in what she is saying, I think there are a lot of people that are jealous. @ Jamie White Middle class men get everything they want they do not need anything else they have equality and they have always had it so not more of the poor poor white middle class men we do not want to hear that crap.... It should be poor White/Black/Hispanic/Mexican/ etc.... Women because women get no respect what so ever so here is my comment. And by the way I love this song and by the way I am not a Lesbian and I still like her and I think she needs to stay around a lot longer.

I used to really enjoy Lady Gaga's songs and music videos, when they were fun and quirky, but nowadays she tries too hard at being "artistic" and "outrageous" in such a predictable, contrived way. Anyone who thinks she is being "innovative" or sincerely trying to send a message about "peace and equality" need to get a grip; she's a gimmick, a character, basically pandering to whatever is "shocking" and "controversial" for the sake of building her ego. If she didn't take herself so seriously, i'd enjoy what she's doing these days, but she's obviously let "fame" get to her head and is starting to become an egomaniac who thinks she's more artistic and profound than she actually is. I miss the old Gaga that was slightly weird and quirky without trying too hard. I also miss the days when her music videos were 4 mins long. Now she's trying to make these unnecessary "short films" that really are just pointless and a whole lot of filler.

I'm not seeing how Gaga is similar to Madonna. I don't like Gaga, but it's tiring seeing people criticizing Gaga for supposedly stealing from Madonna since Madonna is so completely unoriginal.

Madonna began her career stealing from Debbie Harry, then moved on to stealing Marilyn Monroe's look for many years afterwards.

Madonna ripped off Marilyn Monroe's "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend" song and dance routine from the movie "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes," for the 1985 music video "Material Girl." Madonna then posed as Marilyn Monroe for a photo spread once (where she recreated some of Monroe's poses in Monroe's costumes), and she played Marilyn twice for the TV show "Saturday Night Live."

Madonna copied Monroe's dance number from the 1960s movie "Let's Make Love" for a live, televised awards show appearance in the 1990s, and the list goes on and on.

Then Madonna ripped off Marlene Dietrich in TV appearances and photo spreads, she copied Jean Harlow in her "Hollywood" video, posed as Martha Graham for a photo spread at one point, and ripped off lots of other people, too.

Madonna ripped off Horst's photos for her "Vogue" video.

Madonna lost a copyright suit for using imagery based off Bourdin's fashion photos in her "Hollywood" video.

Madonna's "Express Yourself" song is a rip off of Charles Wright's 1970s song "Express Yourself."

But I don't see Madonna fans getting upset over any of that, or any of Madonna's other musical or image thefts.

This video is a forced attempt at art. Just like any other forced attempt at art all you get is garbage. You can say she is a leader or responsible for recent spotlight on gay rights but your wrong. She is just a corporate shrill who has no unique talent and lies to everyone. Wake up people what she shows in her videos and performances is not really who she is. She's only pushing gay rights because it's the "in thing." if she came out in the 90's she would been part of the Lilith fair. 80's partying and Africa. Her supposed message of equality is no different than the majoriy of people out there, onl diff is she is trying to capitalize on it.

Madonna's Express Yourself is a rip off of Charles Wright's 1970s song of the same name, Express Yourself, you can check it out on You Tube. And Madonna never ran around in videos acting this weird or looking that weird.

All this hype for a song that is racially insensitive- and a video that continues that legacy. All that Gaga did to tailor to the LBTG community was a waste when one considers the way she handles the issue of race not only in the lyrics but in the video. "Orient" and "Chola" are offensive terms to people of Asian and Spanish/New World descent. Not only did she fail to apologize for her insensitive word choice, she continued to use black models to represent hell in this video and to caste a majority of thin, white dancers which doesn't send the message that race matters at all to Gaga, just that white people can sleep with whoever they want to, oh and the one black guy in the huddle at the end- its okay for him too (guess that's all she learned from the Civil Rights Act). At any rate its a little sad that no one is talking about this aspect of the video- but I guess it was just too weird to get anything else out of it.

Now I don't care one way or the other about g@y people, they can live their lives, get married, make out in the street, I DON'T CARE, and they deserve all that. But Gaga is an opportunist and is using the g@y rights movement to draw attention to herself. If the hip issue du jour were child abuse, that would be her platform. She sickens me.

The gay rights movement has been going strong for 42 years. Gay rights have been a center stage argument since the 80's. Cyndi Lauper was accused of the same (exact) thing twenty years ago.

Gaga has been, from the beginning of her career, inexorably tied to the gays.

May I also add that Gaga has NEVER written a piece of music for this portion of her fanbase. This is the first one. The only one. She has over 40 songwriting credits on songs that have been released to the public. This is the first one with any kind of gay themes ... not to mention ... the song isn't even about the gay community; it merely mentions them .... hmmmmm.

This video is a masterpiece if you really understand it. She doesn't care about looking hot, in fact her statement is the exact opposite: be proud of who you are. Genius concept and beautiful followthrough. EPIC.

I agree with Jon. We are all born and we all have the choice to be ourselves or get sucked into nonsense. You can be
good or just stand there and watch...and do nothing. I remember a poem and the last line was...and then they came for me. I don't think it's about being gay. It's about being a human being that won't stand for anyone..any human being beat
up or hurt in anyway. If you just stand and watch someone being killed or beat are as guilty as the person hurting or killing the person.

Seriously? you think she doesnt care about being 'hot' look at her body, and then look at pictures taken a couple years ago. Shes not as 'soft' you KNOW that she has been working out. Shes not stupid, of course she is going to tell everbody to love themselves and that looks dont matter, but do you think as many people would BELIEVE her if she was so huge blob with chin hair and body odor? Everything she does, she does for a reason, she understands fame; what it takes to get it, and what it takes to keep it. Shes said it a million times, that she is obsessed with the concept of fame, and she honestly feels like she has mastered it. Its all an act now, I used to really like GaGa, (I paid 400+ dollars to meet her at a concert) but it just doesnt feel genuine anymore. "Fame, doin it for the fame, cause we wanna live the life of the rich and famous, fame, doin it for the fame, cause we got a taste for champagne and endless fortune, fame, fame, baby the fame, fame, in it for the fame" – Lady GaGa

The video is absolutely beautiful, just like Gaga and her message of peace and equality. So many people are still confused by the imagery. Emerging from the egg is a simulation of rebirth. She has stated herself that we are born several times in life, not just once. This means that we can be anything we want, and truly embrace ourselves by becoming everything we love. When that happens, we leave behind all of the negativity, and we're able to embrace others and break down the boundaries of prejudice. She's brilliant! I love you, Mother Monster! <3

      Jealous much?

GaGa is on a trajectory to super-stardom, and she has Madonna's blessing. I'm not gay, and I love her!
