Gaga's 'Born This Way' makes history on iTunes

Lady Gaga has made history with her latest single.

Since its debut last Friday, "Born This Way" has become the fastest-selling single on iTunes, according to a statement. The song became a No. 1 in 23 countries and sold more than 1 million copies in five days.

The track also made history on Billboard. The magazine announced this week that Gaga's "Born This Way" is the Hot 100 chart's 1000th No. 1 in its 52-year history.

"It is a tremendous honor," Gaga told Billboard of the accomplishment. "To be the 1000th no. 1 on Billboard...I would be silly not to say this is the greatest honor of my career."

"I am so humbled and so honored and overwhelmed by the reception to 'Born This Way,' " Gaga went on. "[It] has been so life changing for me as an artist, and between Billboard and the international number ones and the radio numbers...I couldn't be more blessed to have the fans that I have."

Gaga's album "Born This Way" is expected to arrive May 23.

I agree with a lot of people who have commented and what they said about Lady GaGa as it looks like their glam life is really cool and I wanted to say something else that’s cool, acerenting ads for renting apartments in the US acerenting has the newest US condo rental ads and houses for rent in US ads.

  3. Doesnt matter

LadyBoy GagShyt being number one in this many countries just confirms the world has very little class. Oh sure style runs rampant. Videos now, unfortunately, have more influence and pairing a "great video" with a SHYT song seems to rule the day. Keep in mind the majority is usually incorrect...kinda like ObaManure being elected. It was a fluke just as LadyBoy Gaga is.

I guess Gaga haters will now continue to spread hate even more now for current accomplishment. Gaga has nothing to prove to doubters. Do you actually think she cares what people think about her? 1 MILLION sold in 5 days?? #1 in 23 countries? There are tons of fans of her supporting her. She continues her vision as planned.

Music, just like movies and Tv are full of often cliched', re-vamped re-imagined, re-ran, re-imaged,re-invented, and re-gurgitated re-runs of all that's been done before.. nothing is original anymore... nothing.. , with music and movies today.. two words come to mind "COOKIE-CUTTER"

P.S. MJ had his share of crazy getups as well-even still he was an amazing performer. You know you are one of the great ones when everyone tries to copy you and hail you as having been a major influence on their careers.

I wish Gaga would quit trying to blow people's minds with her outlandish getups and pranks and just be a music artist. She is such a copycat. Watch her dance numbers side by side to Michael Jackson's stuff from 30-40 years ago. You will get what I mean. Miss the genius of MJ - his music and lyrics will be timeless. Artists of his caliber come along once in a generation.

Gaga may or may not be an artist, but she is an entertainer. She's a great entertainer, and it pays to be a great entertainer, so why hate on her about it? I don't care for the song, but I'm not going to pretend she's irrelevant. She's huge.

What a terrible song! No one is really listening to it. Everyone loves "Give your Heart to Jesus or He Will See to It that You Burn in Hell for Eternity" much better (or else). Lady Gaga is not pretty; she just looks pretty. She can't sing either, just makes sounds that people think sound good. True believers, who are deaf and blind, do not like listening to her or watching her. I am not jealous, really! God tells me that when I get to heaven (soon, I hope), I will look much prettier. Ya think?

To all the haters who say Lady Gaga ripped off Express Yourself with this song, where was your anger and rage when all the hip hop artists were literally copying and pasting other people's hit songs into their own records? Born This Way does have a familiar beat to it but it there is no copying and pasting going on in this song.....just paying homage to an earlier style of dance music.

I like Madonna. I love GaGa. They have mutual respect, Yes it sounds like Madonna's song. I don't care. I like both songs. GaGa is not for everyone. She's tapped into something alot of people find close-to-heart though. She always leaves me wanting more. She must be successful as an artist because look at everyone talking about her just on this thread. The fact someone gave their energy to post something says alot about this girl. Can't wait to see her in concert in March in Omaha.

  19. GaGa is a fraud

Every single song I hear of hers, I hear where it came from first and who it is being ripped from. Whether the obvious theft of Madonna, Grace Jones, Ace of Bass, Roxette...this woman who admitted she modeled her "career" by studying other people's fame is merely ripping off other people's work and she has a young generation of fans too self involved to recognize the history that has preceded their days on earth.

My review of Lady GaGa's new single, "Born This Way," is no "Bad Romance," but merely a bad knockoff. Sorry Lady Monster, but Madonna did it first. Listen to "Alejandro" then listen to "La Isla Bonita." Listen to "Born This Way" then listen to "Express Yourself." Judge for yourself.

I'm sorry. Since when is a person who dresses up in a meat costume, sits in an egg for three whole days to "incubate", dress as a human condom, not known as mentally unstable? NORMAL celebrities work on becoming famous through their talent. They then take that celebrity status and use it to promote a good cause. She does the opposite. She uses these absurd PR stunts to sell her music. I don't care if she disguises it as standing up for something she believes, its a PR stunt. Obviously it has worked.

Gaga is a very talented person. She has a pretty awesome voice...when she actually uses it. I just don't understand why she keeps wasting her time on things like dressing and or acting as unusual as possible. She does not need to do those things...unlike many pop stars who must rely on the media constantly talking about them I really think she could be successful just using the actual talent she has. Its one thing to be unique...and uniqueness IS something we need...but it is another thing to just say/claim you are unique when you are really just exploiting lesser know cultures/musicians for your own gain (No, I'm not talking about Madonna...) and calling it something new.
    Conclusion:
While talented, she doesn't seem to really wanna use it and while she keeps trying to convince people that she's just being herself...I don't think that's the case anymore...maybe in the beginning, but now in my opinion she is just exploiting the "freak" factor.

There is a difference between being sensationalized and being artistic. Lady Gaga has been hyped up so much and does so much weird that people with little actual knowledge of what art is jump all over it. This is just a phase, anti-Lady Gaga fans. Have hope. Sooner or later, real art will be completely diluted by all of these commercialized phonies.

What has she done for the art world? Has she contributed anything different? No. Has she paved the way for future artists? No. Has she made in impact on people? Yes, because her music is so open to interpretation that anybody can hear her songs and immediately reflect it on their current mood. Kind of like every other artist that plays on a radio. Do some research on real music and understand that this is just over-the-top commercialization.

She's not interesting. She's not groundbreaking. She's not doing anything. I understand the subjectivity of music and art, and this is just one of those cases where "everything is considered art so back off". But, get your head out of your ass and realize what you are doing, please.

GAGA does have a very good voice which we all know Madonna doesn't. Not to take too much away from the material girl but without her backup that voice of hers is very scary. Come on you haters give a listen to both of then and then decide before you start to mouth off.

GAGA is pure awesomeness! Madonna should be honored to have inspired her. But Gaga has far surpassed her artistic accomplishments!! Some of you keep saying how you cannot wait until "she goes away," but the fact is that she will probably still be here when you are gone!

If her music were stunning different thi would be indeed history. Even if I hated it, if it were talking popular music to a new level, I'd applaud it and her. But she isn't Nirvana (the last music act to have such an impact, in my opinion). She is recycled disco via Madonna while wearing old Elton John threads. Worse is she CAN sing and play and instead of creating something new, she does this stuff.

She's going to be one of the biggiest stars of this decade, and anyone who thinks she won't be remembered is just being silly. She's already had more #1s than many singers from decades ago that we still remember. Way more hits than Madonna had in the same amount of time.

Calm down xjdavid. I'm here because CNN is the only site not blocked by my job. As for artists that I dislike more than Gaga? Not really, she's the only artist I don't like who's constantly in the news for no reason. Plus she's pompous. Insanely pompous. Also, I didn't say she ripped anybody off. I said she's trash. Pay attention.

    February 18, 2011 at 6:02 pm | Report abuse |
    • Ed

Somehow I don't think "pompous" is quite the right word. It implies a sense of arrogance. Aside from the spectacle, which I've only read about – I've never seen her perform, Gaga is generally quite humble. Just read any interview with her. Plus, anyone who thinks she isn't a great musician obviously doesn't know a thing about music. The best part of all this is the childish remarks by the haters. It really shows that those who don't like her really don't have the mental or emotional maturity to appreciate quality.

She's like Madonna? Maybe, but with a big helping of Bjork. But who cares? At least she's not boring. SOOOO sick of boring pretty people.
Oh yeah, and "Express Yourself" was over 20 years ago. Ever hear Mariah's "Emotions"? Listen to "Best of My Love" by The Emotions. Same song.
Also, Justin Timberlake and Usher = Michael Jackson. How many people ripped Prince off in the 80's? And he started out rippin' off Rick James. Katie Perry rips Gwen Stefani off, who was also ripping off Madonna.
Haters just gotta hate is all. With one album, GaGa's had success that took Madonna a few albums to acquire. AND she writes her own songs and songs for other people. AND she plays. So that makes her even better at being Madonna than Madonna has been in years.

"With one album, GaGa's had success that took Madonna a few albums to acquire. AND she writes her own songs and songs for other people. AND she plays. So that makes her even better at being Madonna than Madonna has been in years."

A few albums? Erm... Madonna's first album was pretty successful despite not being the instant hurricane smash that The Fame was (it had Holiday, Borderline, and Lucky Star, all Billboard hits) and her second album was a smash hit, selling 20 million copies worldwide and a Diamond certification in the US (something I doubt Born This Way will achieve in this day and age of music sales). Britney's Max Martin-produced debut album was more successful than Madonna's first album as well, does that also mean she had a better start?

Madonna also writes and co-writes the larger majority of her own songs. Lucky Star and Burning Up were entirely self-penned. The only album where she wasn't involved with much song writing was Like a Virgin. She also has written songs for Kylie Minogue, Lura Paosini, and Gary Barlow,

As for the piano playing, and Gaga is a good pianist, I fail to see how that makes her better at being Madonna than Madonna has been for years. Madge has never played a piano, and if being able to play a musical instrument well means you are better than Madonna (who is an average guitar player at best), then I guess Justin Bieber has it made as the next Madonna.

I like Gaga, but I always roll my eyes when people say they only started recognizing her talent once they heard her perform whatever hit she had during the year in a piano rendition. I knew Gaga was going to be great the minute I heard Just Dance, it didn't take that piano rendition of Poker Face to make me realize that.

Don't take this the wrong way, I like Gaga, I just felt your reasonings for rating her above Madonna were a bit unfair.

It does? I happen to be fans of both and while I'm not thrilled about this song because it's not quite up to par with her last number ones, it certainly does not sound like Madonna's Express Yourself or Deeper and Deeper as others have compared. I'm sure she does "borrow" a few things here and there; what artist doesn't?

I think the bottom line is Lady Gaga attempts to rap and she does a poor job of it. The song, however, is quite successful because she has a whirlwind of fans that are buying into anything she is selling. That, my friend, is just good marketing. She got you talking about it, didn't she?

I read that Madonna has heard the single and loves it. She said she doesn't understand all the hoopla surrounding it and is a fan of Gagas. If the lady herself says it's not a rip off, than I guess it isn't, right? I think Gaga is just really inspired by Madonna, she has said she is a big fan. Pop music sucks. There is no "great" pop music. Lady Gaga and every other pop star are only popular because of their looks (Britney Spears, Aguilera, N'Sync, etc.). Pop music is music for the sake of showing off the singer. It has next to nothing to do with actual music.

Let's not forget doing research Superhiro. Lady Gaga studied music at Tische in NYU. She has knowledge musically meaning she's not only showing off her voice, but the music she writes. Yes she rights her own music. Instead of being so cynical you should learn how to back yourself up instead. Listen to all her old music before she hit the spotlight, its technically solid. I'm not the biggest Gaga fan, but I understand a performer when I see one, but if haters like you want to hate, go ahead and live in your bubble.

I want to second Realist's reply. And add that Gaga actually was offered a scholarship at the Julliard school when she was 11 or 13 or something for piano performance, but she declined it to pursue a different study track. In musical knowledge and chops, this woman runs circles around most pop performers.

What the hell does all of this nonsense about her piano background have to do with her truly pathetic music career? She's not displaying any skill with what she's doing. The song this article is about isn't even hers. It's a song she stole from a person who used to steal songs. The whole thing is moronic.

I mean, for crying out loud, the 1000th Billboard #1 isn't a damn honour. It's just a number. It means nothing.
