'Three Stooges' to star Johnny Knoxville, Andy Samberg... and Cher?

The search for the perfect Stooges continues.

The Farrelly Brothers plan to shoot their big-screen adaptation of the "Three Stooges" shorts this spring, but have yet to cast the trio. Sean Penn, Benicio Del Toro and Jim Carrey were set to star as Larry, Moe and Curly, respectively. But it looks like both Penn and Carrey dropped out, while Del Toro remains a question mark.

According to the L.A. Times, the Farrellys are now eyeing Johnny Knoxville as a possible Moe with "Saturday Night Live" star Andy Samberg filling in for frizzy-haired Larry.

"We like both of those guys," said Bobby Farrelly. "We always thought Samberg looks a little like he could play Larry. And Knoxville is a real-life stooge. He's a real-life Moe."

Since Carrey abandoned the project ("We never heard from him, but we read it," says Peter Farrelly), there haven't been any serious contenders for Curly. However, the Farrellys say they have found their leading lady for the film: Cher. The Oscar-winning entertainer would play the Mother Superior of an orphanage where the Stooges are dumped at the beginning of the movie and wreak havoc.

"Cher is just the coolest chick ever," Peter said of the star, who made a cameo in their 2003 film "Stuck on You." "It's hard to describe. You meet a lot of celebrities in our business. We're not cowed by many of them. But Cher is bawdy, she's fun, she's cool, she's lived a life, she's got experience, she's humble. It's the humility that struck me the most. She's not really a diva."

As Marquee previously reported, "The Three Stooges" will not be a traditional biopic but a reboot of sorts, featuring three 27-minute shorts filled with slapstick and the Stooges' classic theme songs.

"No matter what we do, some people will not like this movie, just because there are the purists who say 'You shouldn't be remaking it,'" Peter tells the L.A. Times. "Our feeling about it is this: We love the Three Stooges. And the Three Stooges never got the Class A treatment they deserve. They were never Laurel & Hardy, Abbott & Costello or the Marx brothers. They never got movies, and they never got the adulation in their lives that we feel they deserve."

What do you think of the Farrellys' potential casting choices? Tell us in a comment below.

You actually make it appear so easy with your presentation but I to find this matter to be really something that I believe I'd never understand. It sort of feels too complex and very extensive for me. I'm looking ahead in your subsequent put up, I'll try to get the hold of it!

If you cast Knoxville, the movie will bomb. He is not right for any of the stooges. Benicio del Toro was a good choice but if I had my way:

    Jack Black – Moe
    Larry C. Reilley – Larry
    Kyle Gass – Curly

It might feel a bit like Tenacious D and that other guy, but these actors have the right personalities to portray these characters the way that they need to be portrayed. Knoxville just isn't versatile. His personality bleeds into every character he plays.

See how perfect John C. Reilley is for Larry. He is so perfect that I can't even distinguish between the actor and the character. Hope the movie does well but if you don't get the casting right, then you might as well scrap the whole project because you won't accomplish what you are trying to do. Best of luck to the Farrelly's! This is a pretty ambitious project.

ok 1st off sandler has made plenty of good movies after the 90's. For example cloick wit christopher walken and theres grown ups. But all that aside, i dont think its a good idea to replicate the classic shorts. But if i had to decide, then id go adam sandler as moe, chris elliot as larry, and kyle gass as curly. Sorry, kevin james is funny but voice is too deep to replicate wit curly.

Seriously you picked Click and Grown Ups to prove that Adam Sandler is still funny, those are the two worst movies he's ever made. BTW he's never been funny, but back in the 90s he surrounded himself with funny writers, now he's writing and producing his own movies and they are awful.

This is an extremely bad idea for some many obvious reasons. The Three Stooges cannot be replicated in any way. All the choices are simply unexceptable because all of today's actors have no grounding in vaudeville. Kevin James – are you kidding? King of Queens – a great example of just how low humour in the United States has sunk. Just drop the idea and let's go back and enjoy those classic 190 shorts....well, exclude those that include the hopelessly unfunny Joe Besser. Long Live Larry Fine!

I need to say. Really rarely do I eneocntur a weblog that’s each educative and entertaining, and let me tell you, you have got hit the nail on the head. Your thought is excellent; the issue is one thing that not sufficient individuals are speaking intelligently about. I am very glad that I stumbled across this in my seek for one thing regarding this.

Johnny Knoxvill and Andy Samburgh would both be perfect for Moe and Larry. Jonnah Hill would make a great Curry. He got the weight and the voice. All he has to do is shave his head.

"not a traditional biopic"??? No kidding CNN.com. I would no more expect this to be a biopic than I would expect the new spiderman reboot to be a holocaust film or an ancient Roman epic.

I love the Stooges! No one can do it better than them, but I will certainly go and see it, if it has Knoxville and if they cast Kevin James as curly. If not, I won't.

Don't make this movie!! This is a horrendous idea – there is no recreating the original stooges. Their act was honed through vaudeville, even stand-ins in there act didn't work (except for older bro Shemp)

AGREED!!!!!!!!!! Once more Hollywood proves that their creative writing talent has long since dried up and they've nothing left to do but destroy yet more of the original classics!!!

Stooges "never got movies"? They got way too many, but without Curly. ("Swing Time" hardly counts, since they weren't the "stars".)

That said – no, please, don't do this. Leave the boys alone.

Kevin James would do nicely as Curly and Adam Sandler would make a better Moe. Larry is the question.

I dunno, this feels like one of those franchises that no matter how much effort they put into this film, it would still be trash. Not putting down the Stooges, it's just how can possibly write a 2 hour feature film based around them that would do their legacy justice? I just don't see it. If this film comes out, it will be terrible. Mark it.
