Keith Olbermann is headed to Current TV

On Tuesday, former MSNBC host Keith Olbermann announced that he'll be heading to Current TV to host and executive produce a new primetime nightly news and commentary show.

On top of his hosting and production duties, Olbermann will also serve as Current Media's chief news officer and will have an equity stake in the company, according to a statement.

"Nothing is more vital to a free America than a free media, and nothing is more vital to my concept of a free media than news produced independently of corporate interference," Olbermann said in a statement. Current Media was founded in 2005 by Vice President Al Gore and Joel Hyatt, and is now distributed to more than 75 million households worldwide.

"In Current Media, Al Gore and Joel Hyatt have created the model truth-seeking entity," Olbermann added. "The opportunity to partner with Al, Joel and Mark Rosenthal makes this the most exciting venture in my career."

The news comes shortly after Olbermann parted ways with MSNBC in January, after eight years of working with the network. The 52-year-old had been suspended for two days in November after the website Politico revealed donations had been made to three Democrats seeking federal office.

NBC Universal said at the time that the donations violated a policy requiring employees of the news organization to get permission before any political donations or activities that could be a conflict of interest.

After his suspension, Olbermann gave his viewers an apology for "having subjected you to this unnecessary drama."

He went on, "It's not in my contract that NBC had rules about getting permission for making political donations, even though any rule like that in any company is probably not legal."

In an earlier statement, Olbermann aired his frustration with the way NBC handled the situation, claiming that the company was "inconsistent" when applying its policy and didn't hear his side of the story before suspending him.

"When a website contacted NBC about one of the donations, I immediately volunteered that there were in fact three of them; and contrary to much of the subsequent reporting, I immediately volunteered to explain all this, on-air and off, in the fashion MSNBC desired," Olbermann said.

However, all of that is now old news for Olbermann. His Current TV program is slated to air live on weeknights later this year.

On a conference call Tuesday, Olbermann revealed that the hour-long program "will be for all intents and purposes an improved and stronger and amplified version of the show I just did at my previous network. As for name and other particulars of that, stay tuned," he told reporters.

In terms of his role as a chief news officer, it was explained that Olbermann "will be very conceiving other show ideas and overseeing Current’s coverage of other issues of the day."

Current Media co-founder Gore also clarified that Olbermann will be allowed to make political donations in his new role. "We believe at Current that every citizen has the freedom of speech, and freedom of speech includes being able to donate to your candidate of choice," he said.

To those of you that watch faux news ~ Fox is NOT fair and balanced! There are several news sources across the spectrum that I challenge you to cross reference against before spewing the "facts" you so loudly proclaim as truth. Just because Fox tells you it is the truth, do not assume it is until you've done your homework! Politico and are two that can really open your eyes to what is a larger picture in our nations political arena. Do you believe what you read in tabloids? Because fox news is tabloid tv and should be received as such! The king of tabloids bought a tv station and turned it into the only thing he knew, trash tv!

KO hasn't done anything but point out all the inconsistencies, and hypocrisy the ultra right is forcing down the throats of America. Instead of being a yes man to corporate prigs he chooses to walk his talk. That does nothing but speak volumes of his character.

I have had Keith Sanity withdrawals. Does anyone even know what the Koch brothers are up to? The billionaire brothers
are buying up the gullible so they will be frightened enough to vote against there own best interest and contribute to a horrible situation,(the rich getting much richer), and we ultimately become a poor third world country because they have you believing that the hard working folks who over the century gave us all the 40 hour week, child labor laws, etc. are to blame for this country's economy, unemployment, etc. God help us all, and may Keith be of all the help getting out the
truth to those who seem to relish either in their bought souls, or to those who may be curious what is really going on.
So far, Comcast carries Current TV. We shall watch and see. Mary

I am always surprised by those who keep talking about ratings for FOX News. You do realize that MSNBC is not broadcast by a large number of carriers in Middle America who broadcast FOX. Even my darling parents in Oklahoma watch FOX sometimes because they don't have many other channels available to them. They tell me they only do it when they have to though as it makes them want to throw things at the television. Another reason for country-wide access to broadband internet!

It's a great move for him. He goes from the lowest rated tv,(so-called), news show to a show that nobody except the Gore followers watch! This guy is so far left that even the extreme left hate him. He has been made exec producer..of what. So now he will be able to exercise his right, which he thought he didn't have at msnbc, to develop stuff that nobody will watch. He was lousy at espn. Even worse at msnbc. He has gone from one of the most watch network,(espn), to probably the least watch network. Great advancement Olbe! Keep up the good work! Maybe one day in the far distance future someone will hear about one of your program you developed! It will be so nice never hearing your name again!

Olbermann is frequently denounced as "one-sided" or dogmatic. He does have a clear point of view, but he defends his positions with publicly verifiable facts, unlike the right-wingers who simply invent "facts" and shout down anyone who dares to disagree with them. While it is true that Keith can be rather strident in tone, his is one of very few voices in the American media that is not resolutely right-wing. The airwaves are dominated by the lunatic fringe at Fox, Clear Channel, etc. Murdoch, Disney, Comcast, etc., own the major media outlets. Even MSNBC (soon to be under Comcast), which developed a substantial viewership by broadcasting some progressive programming, decoded to drop their highest rated program. Why? Because Olbermann made three contributions to Democrats? ( Why then is Joe Scarborough still on the air?) So, welcome back, Keith. Your voice is needed. Many of us will be watching and listening.

I consider myself a democrat with relatively far left leaning views, however, I yearn for the sort of objectivity that is supposed to be embraced by journalists so as to report a fair and balanced story void of one's own political stance and opinions. As a liberal and harsh critic of Fox News including but not limited to Bill O'Reilly, Glenn Beck, Hannity...I feel it is my responsibilty to call out people like Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow. Although I often agree with them and rather like Rachel Maddow's work ethic, I feel that their reports are sometimes...if not often...slanted towards their views. Regardless of whether or not their facts are true or not...which they often are to Rachel's is obvious where they stand on the political spectrum. I concede that it is impossible to be completely unbiased, but there should be more of an effort. Viewers/readers should not be able to tell so easily and obviously what one's political affiliations are. When you are an obvious far left or right leaning thinker and people know that, they will never listen to what you say no matter the truth. But I guess it's the world we live in. It seems the only way to make it on primetime is to consistently insult others and make the most outrageous comments you can. The News Business is afterall...a business. But what about us? What about the American people? Don't we deserve some degree of objectivity? I should think so. We shouldn't have to dig so deep to find objective reports. Of course we all need to do our job of cross referencing and using more than one source, but it shouldn't be the job of our news people to try to get you to think the way they do. Give me the news. And if you must give your opinion, then state it as such. Say, "this is what I think." Don't word it in a way to make less knowledgable viewers believe it as fact, because many people won't verify false facts. They take it at face value and maybe that's their own fault, but don't make it so very hard to have an open minded, tolerant society. Stop playing on human emotion and over sensational stories. Let's get it done people. Together. Stop throwing stones. We are all Americans and citizens of the world community and we deserve to disagree in peace and dialogue. Not wars and insults. I love you all. Even you far right white folks 🙂 real talk.

Do agree with you when it comes to NEWS. That is the problem. FOX News lables all of their shows as news. MSNBC is an amalgam with some shows being NBC news based and others more MS (originally Microsoft) based augmenting the NBC news format shows. Beck was on MSNBC, along with the likes of Ann Coulter, John Gibson and others in the past. I do agree that MSNBC is leaning left in its opinion shows but not in their news coverage. Show me the same on Fox.

Why should Olbermann put a conservative on his show?? Self-delusional people(sorry Conservatives...should point that out so not to mislead) wouldn't be able to handle the truth. They are blinded by only what they see as what we all should do. You cannot change conservatives point of view. I have parents that are so conservative it's not even funny and I am liberal. You show me ONE conservative that will actually LISTEN to what the liberals say...then maybe there is hope to have one on KO's show. Conservatives just want to have sheep that blindly follow them anywhere. When I try to talk to my parents about other sides of an issue...oh heck no! They are right and that's that. By the way, for those of you who have asked about Current TV. The easiest way to find that channel is to Google "Current TV" and when their home page displays, select the "Channel Finder" (in small blue font on the far right side) and a pop-up page will display the channels for most cable providers. Unfortunately, it didn't for Verizon (now Frontier), so went to the Frontier Web site and pulled up the channel list for my cable package and found it there. (Channel 192, where I live near Seattle.)

Keith Olberman NEVER made fun of someones disabilities, such as Rush Limpbag did with Michael J. Fox, he never tells outright opinionated lies such as Glenn Beck did about our President having a "deep-seated hatred of white people". Keith doesn't incite anger and hatred and murder as O'Reilly did with "Tiller the baby killer". Keith just refutes the lies and hypocrisy of the right-wiing scare tactics of the conservative politicians. Keith raised lots of money for free health care clinics around the country this past year. Right-wingers don't like him because he makes you look like the bunch of divisive fanatics that you really are. Al Gore should have been elected our President in 2000 since he won the popular vote, but the Supreme Court didn't want to bother with finishing the recount in Florida. So we got stuck with W. That got us into two wars and nearly a great depression!!! Had Gore been our President we would have been in a much better position than we were in 2008. And whether you believe it or not, global warming is a fact. It doesn't mean the weather will turn all balmy and sunny. It means extreme weather happening all around the world, i.e. Australia, Europe, South America, US.) Warming oceans effect the weather patterns and air currents and create extreme weather. That's just a fact.

I thought Keith was much better when he was just doing sports reporting. Once he moved on to news commentary he became just another of the network blowhards. He is a good example of why they are called "talking heads". I prefer plain, unbiased news reporting and honest commentary by neutral observers OR a fair chance of commentary by opposing points. Unfortunately this is becoming a thing of the past on all television. People are no longer proud to be known as true television journalists, instead they have to market themselves according to how a network V.P. wants them to.

Just in the past several months. She quite literally BEGS right leaning voices to come on – watch her show some time. You can't miss it.

Keith Olberman's show wasn't based much around the interview, and he never endorsed a candidate on air but he did interview Alvin Greene, but that was a bit of a sad moment for the GOP anyway.

As my earlier post pointed out...when you use terms like "libtard", everything you say following it is meaningless. If you feel the need to paint an entire group of people, some of which are certainly as smart or smarter than you, you might want to learn to pose an articulate debate, rather than just insult invisible people. It negates your opinion.

You have quite the head to think anyone read your "earlier post", Fudgie. I certainly did not, nor do I care what your opinion is. There is no "debate"; I'm merely posting that I choose to exercise MY freedoms, just like Olbermann and the other libtards do. If you're uncomfortable with the moniker, tough. If you discount my opinion because I choose to use it, I don't care. I never sought your approval nor tried to change your mind. Frankly, you don't matter to me.

I beg to differ...while this is certainly a step down, going from being an co-anchor on ESPN, to having your own show on MSNBC, that you have control over content was certainly a step up. I'm sure he will be able to do what ever he wants on Current...whether it is a popular network or not...he is making it relevant by going there, as this forum illustrates from the response it's getting. Whether he tanks or keep moving in a direction that allows you more and more control over content, is a good thing. If he can't make it fly...well, we all know what that is.

To equate Glenn Beck – an avowed huckster and obvious dumb-a ss – with Olberman is to equate Curly Howard with Walter Cronkite: there's just no credibility in a guy whose best pronouncements are delivered as he runs on the floor pivoting on his ear shouting "Woo-woo-woo-woo." So Beck and Limbaugh will be moving to public access, as well? It's always humorously pitiful that the cons so often find it necessary to fire a verbal preemptive strike by calling the kettle black, as if to deflect the truth and thus evade responsibility for their hate speech. The real fascist neo-nazi and klan rallies are on Faux News and rightwing fearmonger radio.

One comment indicated Al Gore won the popular vote. Our founding fathers were very careful to protect individual rights when they founded us as a Republic. We are not a democracy as some would think. It is not by a mere majority of votes that one is elected and that was intentional. The method used prevents one or two large states with a huge population from controling an election. Who wants New York and California selecting the President in every election?

I see several comments about Glenn Beck lying. What specifically is he lying about?

I also see comments about how many more conservative talk show host there are compared to left or liberal. Could it be there are a lot more conservatives, How many liberals do you think there are?

    February 8, 2011 at 12:42 pm | Report abuse |
    • Observer

First of all, the majority of the people who voted wanted Gore to be president. Yes, our voting system is intentionally biased so that everyone's vote does not count the same.
You asked about Beck's lying. The easiest example is when he told his sheep at the hypocritically named Restore Honor rally, that he had had George Washington's speech in his hands. It was a blatant lie.

Have you even seen Olbermann's "Countdown"? You can probably go to "Beck-Countdown" on Youtube and you will get your fill.

here's a quote from Beck's own beak: Huffington post (9-3-2010): "After being called on a white lie he told during his Restoring Honor rally, Glenn Beck admitted Thursday that he stretched the truth because he "thought it would be a little easier." (PS that reference came from Google: "Beck lying." There are other references there.)

It's always easier to lie, Glenn, especially for you.

Right. Because news produced with political influence has a much better reputation for integrity. Maybe Current TV can do a special on how hurricanes form and show Al Gore how incredibly stupid his book cover that feature one spinning the wrong way and another sitting on top of the equator made him look.

Well, I sure predicted this one. Right after Olbermann left MSNBC I wrote:

"The Last thing Olbemann is is crazy. He may be temperamental like many artistic types – and Olbermann is definitely a verbal performing artist – but crazy he is not, In fact, his penetrating rants are some of the most rational editorial discourses I've ever experienced. The fact that he constructs and then performs them with a sometimes loosely harnessed emotional intensity borne of conviction and a dedication to human core principles like justice, fair play and honesty only underscores his rationality in the end.

Does he take it over the top on occasion? Sure, but he is rational enough to know when he has and can laugh at himself when confronted with it. When Ben Affleck impersonated Olbermann on Saturday Night Live in a sketch of "Countdown" which hilariously mocked the MSNBC anchor and played him as an exaggerating, pompous cat-owner who speaks like a Shakespearean actor, cuts off his guests and lives with his mother, Obermann aired the segment and did the same with a Jon Stewart segment calling Olbermann out on his tendencies for exaggerated purple prose. Tell it to Shakespeare, the master of purple.

If there is one thing that Olbermann can be accused of its that he elevated rather than cheapened the broadcast news conversation. He also saved MSNBC's ass.

I have no doubt that his irrepressible talents will find new outlets in the near future and the millions of us who admire and see his efforts as essential and even heroic in these days of societal collapse will gladly follow him wherever he decides to perch."

And so I and many, many others have.
By the way, Current TV, though not offered by cable everywhere, is watched by 60-70 million viewers.

Clearly he is either being misleading or is ignorant when he states that his media will be devoid of a corporate interference. Unless he is running a non-profit, where all contributions are made in a blind fashion (unknown contributors) or he is financing Current using his own money, he is no different then NBC or any of the other outlets. From what I can tell, this is a for profit venture so he will have corporate interference or at least the appearance as such. As for media based on the truth. That is simply absurd in the world of politics where most views are based on opinion and lose interpretations of very complex issues. It would be more honest to say that the show will seek the truth in an honest and balanced manner. Something tells me though that he probably believes that slanted media like MSNBC or AOL Huffington Post are his examples of "truth seeking". If that is the case his show will have no more commitment to truth then all of the right wing shows on Fox or left wing shows on MSNBC.

This country needs Keith Olberman. With so many "distorted" facts coming from Fox News and other on the right, we do need some balance. @Sam Some people care about more than money. What does the fact that you don't believe that's possible say about you?

It really is hard to believe this knucklehead liberal is paid money for his misguided thinking and commentary.....not sure why anybody would watch this hateful and bitter and just angry...even the way he rolls up a ball of paper at the end of his silly show, which thankfully was cancelled, and throws it at the camera....come on....who watches this guy? i tried to watch 20 minutes of his show once and could not make it that long....had to turn him off. What is scary to me is that there are voters out there that watch him...not many but there are some. Keith Olberman is an emabarrassment to all of us that see how the country is being destroyed by liberal thinking. The media is as much or more to blame as this type of detached person. is hard to believe this guy and the liberal lying media...they deserve each other.

Whty would anybody watch Keith Olberman on any channel? Why? This detached snobby liberal is so absurd....he, like all liberals, needs to live in the ghetto, or in prison for a month, or get carjacked, or mugged to wake up and face reality.....

It must have taken all he had to smile for this picture! He's such an angry man. He and Gore make a good pair, both of them are nuts.

Keith never suggests that his listeners do their own research and not just believe what he has to say. You might actually want to watch a Glenn Beck show where he encourages you to do your own research and not just believe what he has to say. Keith is so ridiculous with his diatribes that this disenchanted Dem will not watch his new show.
