Whoopi: I was a high-functioning drug addict

While her co-hosts may have criticized Charlie Sheen over a recent report that he's skipping rehab to go back to work, Whoopi Goldberg says she understands the decision. "The View" host revealed Wednesday that she was once a high-functioning drug addict.

"He is an alcoholic, he is a drug user,” Goldberg said of Sheen. “He knows he has a lot of people he’s responsible for. Having been a drug addict, I feel I can say this… I was a functioning drug addict, I showed up for work because I knew a lot of people would be out of work and I wouldn’t get a check that I needed to buy my drugs."

Things got so bad for Goldberg that she became terrified to leave her bed for days because she thought something was under it. She even went to the bathroom in her bed.

"I was so scared. I hit bottom," she said. "I did that a long time ago."

While Goldberg is now "as straight as an arrow," she believes it's up to Sheen — and not his TV producers — to get himself back on track.

"Until Charlie makes the decision that he’s ready and willing to stop doing what he’s doing … he’s not there yet," she said.

I think Whoopi has alot more things to worry about than what Charlie is doing...one look in the mirror in the morning should have concerned her with a plethora of other things, but then again maybe that is what the drugs were for.

One of the great questions to me is why people care what Whoopi Goldberg has to say. What has she done? No, seriously, like, what has she done? She's a semi-talented actor and a decent stand-up comic. That's it. She's made like 1 good movie. She seriously has to be one of the most over-exposed people of all-time.

I hate the term "high-functioning addict"!! For a former addict to use it is irresponsible and misleading. Phrases like this serve to further enable addicts and discourage them from getting help because it's another cop-out. At best, a "high-functioning addict" is in denial, at worst, his/her body is in the process of ceasing to function!! This term was used to describe a family member of mine who was an alcoholic for years. Yes, he had an important job and a family and SEEMED to be holding it all together but that was proved false when his 48 year-old body began to shut-down, he collapsed and never regained consciousness. RIP G.D.H. We love and miss you.

Woopy is right, that's the case with any addiction, even something as small as smoking, unless you decide you need to quit for yourself – not to show people you can, or because of your job, or because of people around – but for yourself, it's never gonna work "for good." You can stop for a while, but if it's not for yourself, it's not gonna last. People can force him to rehab, unless he wants to be there and wants to be "normal" it's all for nothing. And considering his statements about this situation, he thinks there is absolutely nothing wrong with him or his life.

We likely are almost all "highly-functioning addicts." Only we don't realize it because our "drug" of choice isn't illegal. But if tomorrow coffee, Coke, certain TV shows, or what have you, were made illegal, we'd start realizing that we aren't really any freer than many of the very addicts we look down upon.

The difference is that those addicts have to work beneath the table, doing all sorts of things, to feed their habit. Unlike the rest of us, they are constantly having to worry how they will obtain their next hit. Us? We just go down to the story and buy another pack of Coke, or cigarettes, or beer.

Make drugs legal and a lot of this junk will stop–at least the crime. And as for the abusers, well, there will always be abusers, whether the item is legal or illegal. Just look at the people who abuse legal alcohol.

I appreciate Whoopi being so authentic and transparent.

Well, use of the term "high-functioning" is an oxymoron. If there was anything at all high-functioning about Whoopi, she wouldn't have elected to use drugs. While addiction is compelling, the decision to use drugs to begin with is clearly a matter of simple choice.

If a conservative like a Rush Limbaugh gets addicted to prescription drugs due to a medical condition, goes to rehab, shares his experience publically and rehabilitates himself he is branded and ridiculed for life. Then when Whoopi is criticized everyone is a racist, cruel, ignorant and uneducated. Next time one of you Libs start ranting about Limbaugh's addiction to medically prescribed drugs remember the pass you gave Whoopi. I am personally happy for anyone who overcomes addition. Someone earlier posted a question asking why Americans are so racist. It is quite obvious from a lot of the comments that this country is still very much racist. It is an uncomfortable truth. In my opinion this country is still very racist because the racists themselves do not consider themselves racists. They think that their behavior is ok. It's obvious that the goal is to maintain the status quo. Such a shame. Such wasted opportunities. So many lost souls....

Hollywood could do America a favor by not hiring drug addicts and require them to undergo rehab as a requirement for work. Just like most American workers. Yo-yo rehab for the likes of Charlie Sheen and Lindsay Lohan is now more of a publicity stunt and way to pump up a fading career, than an authentic attempt to get straight. Hollywood studios could have a zero-tolerance policy for actors who need rehab. But they won't do it:: too much money at stake and besides Americans love the phoney drama. Whats funny about all this, is that there is a slew of stars, musicians, actors, etc., that have had this past experience of drug/alcohol addiction. Take Samuel L. Jackson for example. he was a crackhead before his super stardom. but it's too obvious that many judge too quickly ones downfalls through life. selective predjudice is obvious, but it is our weakness that keeps us from coming together as a unified people. I too honestly feel what people are worried about when it comes to this topic, but don't go thinking you're better because you don't/haven't Been through the cycle. nowadays, Kids can pick between a 5 dollar footlong, or a dose of heroin. nancy reagan's "just say no" campaign only motivated kids like i was, to tie plastic ribbons on fence-lining that said "just say no". but she obviously forgot peer pressure in that equation. if our future is within our kids, then teaching them The values of your family,
and society, is way more important, than limiting their learning of reality.

Congratulations on never having been addicted to anything. Telling someone who is going through withdrawal because they're actually trying to kick the habit that they're just trying to refuse responsibility for their actions seems a bit...unfair.

Addiction is a CURABLE mental disease; however, different people react to the disease differently. That's why some people can do a line of coke a few times and never go back and some people end up in prison for stealing in order to purchase more coke.

Those that choose to hold their fellow man in contempt will get a healthy dose of Karma. Elvis Costello said it best – "What's so funny 'bout peace, love and understanding?"

There are white people who are idiots and racist – there are also black people who are racist and stereotype all white people as racist. That is not the case and is a big part of the problem.

I don't always agree with some statements that Whoopi has said on the View. Some statements were way over the top for me. But on this, I want to go on record by telling Whoopi thank you for your honesty. Finding yourself in that state of addition is very difficult. Pulling yourself together is/was hard. I worked and lived at a drug rehab facility for a year as a resident counselor. Whoopi is right that Charlie Sheen is not anywhere near rock bottom. Non-addicts idea of rock bottom is a lot prettier than those in active addiction. I'm glad Whoopi knows enough to remind her coworkers that their condemnation is not going to affect Mr. Sheen at all. It's HIS responsibility and he may very well die before he hits rock bottom. I pray for his and his family that the light will come on before its too late. AND I think the film crew should get severance or something or released from their responsibilities so they can find other work. Not sure of their obligations in this case.

It is apparrent that Ms. Goldberg is an intelligent and articulate human being. She expressed compassion and empathy toward a person who has challenges. It is easy for her to empathasize, having first hhand experience. Until you have walked in one's shoes, how can one pass judgement? Apparently she has a great deal to offer, and that is why she is in the position to do so, and is compensated financially for doing so. With regard to racism, it is an arrogance that typically stems from a person's own insecurities. Itis easy to try to denigrade someone based on race, but at the root of this is a larger demon than that which Ms. Goldber experienced.

We allow our government to embrace immigrants and give them access to welfare and english courses, that we pay for, we allow them to fight to remain in the country (although immigration officials have earmarked them to leave) by using lawyers paid by the people. We allow affirmative action to provide forced opportunities in a system that is built on being better than the guy next to you, or you fail. What does that say to the guy who built his business or opportunities only to have someone who is given the opportunity instead of earning it? Racism and hatred will always be alive because it is what people want.

High functioning is exactly as it sounds. The drugs don't prevent the person from "functioning" or taking care of their day-to-day responsibilities. They can still get up to go to work everyday, they remember to pay their bills, they know how to appear lucid and "with it." Low functioning addicts are the ones we think of as "strung out." Sleep a lot and.or have violent, manic spells, often bouncing from job to job, etc. A lot of it has to do with the type of tolerance the person's system either has, or doesn't have, to the chemicals in the drug.

There are people who become addicts due to medical conditions and have no support network nor the financial means to pull themselves out of their habit. I'm sure that Rush L. had the support network and financial means to drop his habit. The sorry news is that his support network and financial means probably contributed to his habit.

Your agent says you're capable of making everyone around you a few more years of living simply by claiming that your "weak-minded persona" is addicted to a substance? Absolutely ludicrous, this is simply a hatched idea to keep her and her counterparts a little more successful in the long run before she's too old to be taken seriously.
