Jenna Fischer: Why actresses obsess over weight

Be glad you don't have Jenna Fischer's "Office" job.

The star of NBC's hit comedy series tells the March issue of Redbook she believes actresses obsess over their weight because they are required to tell their co-workers their clothing size.

"In a normal job, if you gain or lose a few pounds, it's no big deal," Fischer, 36, explains. "But in my business you have to tell someone so that the next time you go to a fitting, the clothes are the right size."

And that could make one want to hide in her cubicle.

"It's really embarrassing to have to say to your manager, 'I'm now a 6 pant instead of a 4,'" she says. "Emails go out, and they CC the agents: 'Jenna would like everyone to know that she's now a 6 pant.'"

So it's no surprise that Hollywood women are constantly fighting the battle of the bulge, says Fischer.

"This is why actresses obsess about their weight," she says. "It's not a private affair."

What is wrong with some of the creeps writing here, loving the new fat JF!? She is in the entertainment business – not selling sensible shoes. Jenna Fischer's body is as much a part of her job as her voice or anything else and the fact that she is losing her looks and let herself get fat is a problem for her and the show.

For one thing, Jenna and John Krasinski no longer have any chemistry – their "marriage" is not believable when he still l looks fine and she's landed in pre mature middle age with a thud. The token, clumsy references to their children are brutally fake.

These are not the only problems – clearly the writing has collapsed and the show is now a train wreck.....anybody wonder why Carell really left? APPLAUSE!

What I find funniest about all these comments, all the back and forth about how women obsess over weight and how it's all men's fault (or not), is that this lovely actress is a healthy size 6! That's hardly stick thin. It's just right! And a 4 for her probably just means she has to work out a bit more. I'm happiest at a size 8 and certainly if I wanted to be on tv I'd have to get down at least to a 6 - though most likely since I'm short and busty it'd be more like a 4 to look right on camera. Actresses do it for the paycheck. You would too if that was your livelihood.

I never thought of that! I don't care when I have to go up a size, and it doesn't bother me to tell someone I'm a size 8 now instead of a 4 (even though I'd rather be a 4!). But that isn't "sharing" amongst friends. It's insulting and embarrassing to have to go through a change in your dress size that way...they're basically ridiculing the actresses for gaining a couple of pounds. Next thing you know they'll be stripping them down in front of the crew to look for cellulite.

The truth is that whether you are fat, thin a geek or a glam, if you like the person you are are truly beautiful. It's too bad more Americans don't know that fact.

I don't doubt that's she's sincere.....however, let's not lose site of the fact that she's obsessing over the difference between being a 4 and a 6, which is ridiculous. A fan of her's does not exist that will stop being a fan should she decide to be a 6. She is the one putting the undue pressure on herself to be a 4. Further, don't lose site of the fact that the vast majority of women in the US would kill to be a 6. Finally, another quote from the same Redbook article has her offering that her new husband is basically the perfect man. If he's not telling her to be a happy 6 as opposed to a vigilant 4, he's not so perfect afterall.

actually you may be displeased to know not all men have the same taste in women like some like thin or curvey or fat theres even men with a fetish for extremely obese women...some like short or tall, some like the "model type" or the geeky looking ones, or the rocker chick... And if a guy is inlove with you then he wont care what you look like, just that you are who you are 🙂

Yeah i hear ya! Soon summer will be here and we will be seeing the fat cows squeezed into way too tight clothes with their fat hanging out. Please ladies nobody wants to see a fat woman inthight shorts, cut off tops with your fat bellies hanging out. Please cover up so and leave the skin showing for the real ladies that have it going on.

That's just one of the reasons but what about the camera adds 10 lbs on you and also the fact that you just want to look good and wear whatever you want without looking like you just ate a whole farm of animals.

I'll tell you why. Men run the studio system in Hollywood and most of them, I believe, are misogynists. They want actresses who are anorexic and get plastic surgery on every part of their bodies. They don't want to cast women that look like real women. They're idiots and the fact that 98% if the product that comes from Hollywood is garbage proves what idiots these men are.

Yes. It's all men's fault. Specifically white men. They created everything and run everything and do everything important ... so they must be evil.

In case you can't figure it out, that's satire.

Jenna is wrong, or rather, only indirectly correct.

Jenna is a product. People don't pay to see fat actors and actresses, they pay to see thin ones – that's 100% of the story. Consumers speak with their dollars, for whatever it's worth, right or wrong, that's the way it is.

Boocat, it's unfair to blame all men, or even just the men "running the studio system." It's a societal issue. They wouldn't demand that actresses be so thin if it were not what the public wanted to see. If the public started criticizing these women for being the stick figures that so many of them are, the powers-that-be in Hollywood would require them to gain weight. It's all about what sells. I agree with Jenna, though – it would be very difficult not to obcess about your weight in that environment.

i totally agree with you for the most part. Hollywood is run mostly by men but regardless of that Hollywood is obsessed with looks – especially female actor's looks. you don't hear nor see criticism about male actors – men are essentially allowed to age gracefully while women are pushed to be a size 0, dye their hair to keep from going grey and do everything they can to not have lines on their faces. female actors aren't allowed to age gracefully, while male actors are allowed to age gracefully as it makes them seen as "wise" and "mature".

I'll tell you why... because nobody wants to watch fat women on TV or in movies... Has anyone seen Gaby whats her name from precious recently? nope. What about the Nicky whats her name from hairspray? nope See any heavy girls on American Idol this year? Nope That show 'huge', cancelled.

And it's not about being "Anorexic".... it's about being fit. Not every size 4 is anorexic

Thanks to Jenna for being so honest. When actresses go on and on about how they eat so much, rarely work out, etc... it gets annoying. Jenna looks great, size 4 or not!
