The White Stripes officially break up

It's the end of the road for Grammy-winning group The White Stripes.

In an announcement on their website Wednesday, the group explained that they've "officially ended and will make no further new recordings or perform live."

The statement says that the dissolution is for a "myriad of reasons," none of which are health-related, due to artistic differences or because the band simply didn't want to soldier on. Instead, the statement says, they're ending things "mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way."

So after 13 years, Meg and Jack White are thanking their fans and looking toward the future.

"Both Meg and Jack hope this decision isn’t met with sorrow by their fans but that it is seen as a positive move done out of respect for the art and music that the band has created," the statement said. "It is also done with the utmost respect to those fans who’ve shared in those creations, with their feelings considered greatly."

Keeping that in mind, the statement continued:

"The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful.”

According to the statement, unreleased live and studio recordings of the White Stripes will still be distributed by Third Man Records.

This makes me so sad. Hope they will come back some day. They never came to Finland and now they newer will... But I really hope for the best for both of them. I love Jack and I love Meg but mostly I love them together, as The White Stipes. Now even Jack is just a musician among musicians.

Hate to hear this, this is one of the better bands over the last ten years. Jack's side projects will tide me over, as all of them are excellent. The only blues guy that Led Zeppelin truly stole from is Robert Johnson. That doesn't mean that they still aren't one of the greatest bands ever, but they got away with that one.

Well in MY humble opinion Led Zeppelin is the best ever to ME. Better put? But if you wanna say they stole jack johnsons music dont forget to also accuse them of stealing from muddy waters as well. To everyone music speaks differently. The sad thing is that things dont last and we are all reminded of our own mortality when these tragedies occur. and rap is alright...country blows from 1989 on...GO PACKERS!!!!!

Everyone has a certain genre of music that speaks to them. It is not always about the technical difficulty, rather the emotions that pour out of whoever is playing or singing. There are artists out there who are technically superior yet their music does nothing for me. Jack White puts a great deal of soul into his music and because of him I have been introduced to even greater music, i.e. Son House. Thank you, Jack White. I look forward to more of your music.

I really have my doubts that many of the critics of The White Stripes have actually listened to them. I challenge you to find another duo that can play as well in a stadium. As for people saying Jack stole his riffs and Zeppelin was the greatest band ever I'd like for you to take a good long look at Robert Johnson and tell me again how original Zeppelin was. Further it seems like everyone is a drummer when it comes time to put down Meg but I've known plenty of you wanna be Neil Peart types that can't play a straight beat for anything.

Agreed. How can you steal blues riffs, anyway? You can straight up steal lyrics, i.e. The Lemon Song, but riffs? People need to know more about infringement and how it pertains to the music industry before spouting off.

I love it when people say stuff like, "Both Meg and Jack hope this decision isn’t met with sorrow by their fans but that it is seen as a positive move done out of respect for the art ... " and think that means jack to fans. I don't care about this band but I know plenty of my favorite bands have broken up and I NEVER thought it was a "good thing."

Just like when a college athlete goes pro before his 4 years are up and says, "I hope nobody is upset with me, but ... " Of course they are! You do them NO good leaving. Doesn't mean we don't understand why they're doing what they're doing but don't expect us to be happy about it.

They'll be back. I've seen bands on "farewell" tours before and they always tour again. Sometimes it's because the money runs dry. Sometimes of boredom. A lot of bands make these types of announcements but don't consider that their future is quite a long time and anything can happen. The only bands that break up for good are from a death of a member or a genuine hatred for one another.

I think they wrote several very creative and enjoyable tunes, but a lot of their songs were disappointing. Reminds me of Phish and their loyal following. For some, they could do no wrong. I felt they pushed the envelope a bit too far (milked it, IMHO), and probably would have left a better mark if they had only released the songs that were truly worthwhile. I never liked the Grateful Dead for the same reason. Guess I picked the wrong decade/century to stop doing drugs. Meg is one heck of a drummer, and despite the plain-Jane appearance, there's just something about her...um, personality.

I think it might be difficult for people to appreciate they're music due to the fact that people rely solely on the radio for music exposure. They are given a small amount of "approved pop culture" music and they are fooled into believing that the music they hear over and over is good. We are told what to like. Most people are missing out on amazing music by listening to pop radio.

To Mark. that had to be THE most RIDICULOUS statement i've ever heard and i live in TEXAS. I could play three notes on a guitar that had more style than anything jack white thought of/"borrowed" for a song. If anybody deserves to be named one of the most stylistic blues guitarists its Paul Waggoner from Between the Buried and Me. Sure you may not like the heavy parts of their music, but i promise if you heard his blues solos you would crap your pants. To jermaine. Rap was never at the top. it never will be, because all those crappy beats youre talking about are just rap beats played by actualy people who know how to write REAL beats. not machines that repeat "bass hihat snare hihat" the entire time. you suck at life and so do 90% of people that rap. the only good ones arent rappers or go by the stagename Atmosphere(who coincidentally has a REAL percussionist...if you know what the word means) and i disagree that led zepplin is the best. wow I can't believe all the negative comments about The White Stripes! I'm assuming the people who are thanking God they've broken up and are dissing Jack's guitar playing as cat scratch mess have never seen them live... Amazing duo! Jack White is a BRILLIANT lyricist who never bowed down to throwing F-bombs in his songs... not that I mind them, but this is music that I play for my newphew and he loves it! Some albums were better than others – White Blood Cells, in my opinion, is definitely a top 10 album of the first decade of 2010 in all genres. Admittedly, Meg wasn't the best drummer (has she heard of other time signatures other than 4/4?) – but what she lacked in talent made up for in charm. And sometimes simple music is great - really and honestly. So much hate for such a talented duo...sad.

Finally someone on here who sounds like they really appreciated the White Stripes. I would love to defend the Stripes against everyone who thinks they own the right to pick apart art like they go to museums and call well-established and recognized artists talentless... but art doesn't have to be judged, or justified.

I love to see the Whites ending a band in such an elegant manner, it's so rare to see and it's a pleasure to think it was on good terms. That makes for a possible reunion between the two in later projects. I'm excited to see what more comes of this.

Anyone who doesn't recognize that Seven Nation Army is one of the greatest guitar songs ever has no taste. The rest was mediocre bur they had one great song. Farewell and so long.

That's where I'm coming from, too. One truly kick-ass song in a library that otherwise leaves me cold. Breaking up? Don't really care.

Best guitar song ever? Dude, it's the same riff played over and over again with a mediocre solo in the middle. Catchy and creative yes, but best? Far from it. I liked the video a lot too. Very trippy.

I'm sorry honey, but did your Mama leave the computer on where you could reach it. Don't use the keyboard – that is for big people.
