Jonathan Knight: I was never in the closet

It's no surprise Jonathan Knight wasn't offended when fellow '80s teen idol Tiffany accidentally "outed" him during a recent TV appearance — the New Kids on the Block star says he was never in the closet to begin with.

Now, Knight's speaking out about his sexuality and revealing why he hasn't previously gone public.

“I have never been outed by anyone but myself! I did so almost twenty years ago. I never knew that I would have to do it all over again publicly just because I reunited with NKOTB! I have lived my life very openly and have never hidden the fact that I am gay!" Knight, 42, says in a message posted in the members-only section of the NKOTB blog.

"Apparently the pre-requisite to being a gay public figure is to appear on the cover of a magazine with the caption ‘I am gay.’ I apologize for not doing so if this is what was expected! My belief is that you live your life by example, and not by a caption on a magazine!" he explains.

"If there ever has been any confusion about my sexuality, then you are someone that doesn’t even know me!" Knight adds. "I love living my life being open and honest, but at this time I choose not to discuss my private life any further! My fellow band members don’t discuss their private lives with their loved ones and I don’t feel that just because I am gay, I should have to discuss mine!”

I like him. He seems like a very real, honest, nice person. That's all that really matters. As long as he's not infringing on someone else's rights, he's just fine the way he is. What not so fine are judgemental holier-than-thou sorts who want to rake someone over the coals just for being honest about who they are. They need to mind their own business. If you want to be tolerated, then be tolerant.

"My fellow band members don’t discuss their private lives with their loved ones and I don’t feel that just because I am gay, I should have to discuss mine!” Right there, he made as much ,if not more, of a statement about gay rights than anyone who has ever shouted their cause from a magazine cover. It's about choosing to live one's life on a day to day basis in a manner that is reflective of who someone is as a person – not about who can garner the most attention. Way to go Jonathan! It's nobody's business. We gays love a great role model, but if he chose to be private all this time, that's his business. I have to wonder if he would have been okay going public during the time he was making lots of cash from adoring female fans. That seems against good ethics. It's a shame you know so little about biology and neuropsychology. Of all those who are gay, only rarely is someone born gay. The rest is usually a result of parenting and environment. I've seen the studies that the APA does not wish you to see. But let's continue to ignore the elephant in the room.

It's a shame when someone knows so little about the disorder of delusion, like when someone claims they can read the minds of millions of gays and know they aren't telling the truth about their experiences.

It's a shame that you can only reply with a string of nonsensical phrasing and full of ignorance while trying to imitate my diction. I'm sorry you don't like cold, hard scientific fact. And it's also too bad you don't understand how political the issue is within the APA, more than an objective focus on unbiased science. Not liking the truth does not change the truth of the matter, and that truth is that being "born thay way only accounts for a minute number of the population who ar born that way.

Please tell us the mind-reading techniques you use to read the minds of gays and know what they really experienced in the lives as opposed to what they say. Also, please tell us about the day you decided to become a hetero and what went into your decision. You could also tell us about when you decided to be right or left-handed.

Please tell me if you are familiar with the term projection? Delusional? Mind reading? How about stop acting like a brat and putting words on my mouth? Please tell me whenpedophiles decided to be how they are, or are they just "born that way"? What aout serial killers? As I mentioned earlier, no more false comparisons. Have an understanding of neuropsych, cognitive psych, and analytical psych and biology and I will gladly continue this conversation with you. I was born hetero mainly because this is the natural way of males to be and also I didn't have the etiological environmental influences from my parents. And btw, I could easily become left handed with practice. Ask anyone who has lost their dominant hand. Just admit that you just don't like what I have said and move along. Oh, and good luck arguing with unpoliticized and unbiased science. Only fools think that any one thing is a result of a singular and solitary cause.

Anyone who has ever watched a young left-handed child being forced to write right-handed KNOWS that they have been pre-programmed that way. Pretending it's a simple matter of choice shows no understanding whatsoever. Same for mind-reading when gays say they have had such feelings since they were born and pretending you know different.

Gays: "Orientation started at birth and hasn't changed"
Heteros: "Orientation started at birth and hasn't changed. Gays are not telling the truth".

You clearly don't know a thing about neuropsychology or the psyche! Hahaha, watching a child have difficulty because he/she tries to unadeptly write with the other hand is proof that it's pre-programmed? Wow, what a way to overextended generalizations! Bay of course, not surprising since you claim ALL gays are born that way. Very naive. Fact – Writing is not innate with our species, it's a product of culture and learning. We naturallybegin to use one hand more than the other for various things and the more we do it, the more habitual it becomes. Just admit that you don't like what I'be said and move along. This area is my specialization and you are matched. Sorry if I sound arrogant, but this is the truth of the matter.

Kudos to Jonathon for taking it in stride and not slapping his fans in the face with a big hand that leaves a print that says, "I am gay." Thank you for putting the term "Christians" in parentheses. Hopefully it means you are separating those who claim it as an excuse to run others lives, from those of us who see it as a way to try to live OUR OWN lives. We do exist, you know. BTW, Christ never mentioned gays in the New Testament. People who claim they speak for Him regarding gays need to go back and do some reading. My favorite incident, though pathetic, was when I pointed that out to someone and they said "But yeah, He would have if He had known about them, because IT IS WRONG!!!"

It is also rumored Jesus has reddish hair. Yes, Jesus was a Jew who most likely looked like a Jew. Shocking, I know. The tall, blondish, white skinned, bearded man we see represented as Jesus was the creation of medieval artists who used white european males as models for religious art. White people could never relate to images of Jesus that didn't look like they did.

Christians think it's cool to say horrible things about non-Christians, so it's always good for them to hand them back some of their own arrogance. After all, they are perfect images of god, right?

You have a very good point. People seem eager to criticize and bash other people, and they use their own beliefs as an excuse to do just that. Religions do that to each other, atheists do that to religion, and straights do that to gays using various reasons to justify it. I guess its human nature to need to believe our belief is the one true belief. Mine may be for me, but I know I have no right to tell others my truth has to be their truth. I am a Christian who gets bashed by Christians for not doing that. But I judge not, lest I be judged. I don't have to live anyone's life but mine.

@J.Crobuzon – No, I don't claim to be a perfect image of anyone or anything. I'm just myself, in all my imperfections. There are no perfect people, and anyone who tries to shove their own beliefs down anyone else's throat has a problem. And me, I have enough problems, that must be why I avoid having that particular problem. Using God or Christ as a reason to hate or persecute anyone is for cowardly bullies who are in denial of their own imperfections, and unable to face and address their own problems.

God loves us all and He changes not. Sin is different from living and being. Sin is acting against the standards of God, we have all failed at this, but we cannot expect to live in Heaven if we continue in sin and reject the acceptance of Jesus as Lord and Savior. God created us to be fruitful and multiply, male seed and female egg. We need to realize this will never change, so please realize being anything other than what God created us to be is a rejection of Him, His commandments and His purpose. Rejecting God will not allow us to live eternally and peacefully in his Presence.

If you don't care, I pray one day you will! but you have free choice to do anything you like in this world – it just comes with this very high price effect called consequence.

This is off-topic, but what's up with ending every sentence in Knight's quotations with an exclamation point?! As I remember him from TV interviews, Jon Knight had/has a very softspoken public persona. The writer of this article is making him out to be overly emphatic or upset by overusing exclamation points. Gimme a break. His fans made assumptions but he never made it clear to anyone – not that he had . In this day and age we can;t make assumptions.

Well let's see. . . there was the time he tweeted a pic of two guys on top of a wedding cake and said it would be appropriate for him. Or that other time he said his nieces were having their Barbies make out with his old NK action figure and he should have bought them Ken dolls. Or maybe his comments about having crushes on various male celebrities. Those were pretty big hints.

Yes, its true, some people use religion as an excuse to feel superior and tell other people how they "should" live. But if it wasn't religion, they'd find another reason to boss other people around. Then there are people like me who consider my faith a "personal" choice. That means my choice about me and my life – not a choice about another person or people and their life. My favorite quote to end the holier than thou – ers "Judge not, lest you be judged." Instead of beating people over the head with the Bible, I prefer to open the Book, read it, and apply it to my life. Novel idea, I know, and I am beginning to think it makes me a minority, even among Christians. But judging all of us Christians because of those who mistakenly believe they are Christ Himself, please. We are not all like that.

@Republic the problem is you added (sodomy) that was never in that text. Have you really looked at the definition of sodomy? There can be many interpretations to that text which does not point to sodomy. It's the brainwashing of religion that makes some Christians think that is the one and only correct interpretation. This is why it's been debated and why many churches, pastors and other Christians have gone on record stating ho-mo-s3x-ual-ity is not a sin.

The writer needs to learn proper placement for certain punctuation. This apprears to have written by a 7th grade journalist. Placing an exclamation point at the end of each sentence takes away from its meaning. Oh yeah, and writers subject is gay!

OK, this many celebrities coming out at a time is just too unbelievable! But I guess it's less regrettable down the road than a substance abuse problem. I guess if I were rich and famous and I get a parking ticket, I could try to weasel my way out of it by claiming I'm a lesbian. Not that the judge will knock a few bucks off the fine or anything, but hey, you never know!

I agree that in this new century being gay is a non-issue. Also, the only ones who care are record companies who want to sell to teen girls primarily. Let's leave God, including Jesus, out of this discussion. God doesn't hate, people do.

More proof to females that if the guy is too well mannered, dressed, groomed, spoken, moneyed, etc. etc., then he is gay. I love it. Remember ladies us straight guys are jerks, cheaters, liars, sloppily dressed, with dirty nails and filthy minds because, well..... we are straight. If you want a straight guy we will be at the back of the bar playing pool, staring at the underage girl bending over and wondering how hot it would be to see her french kiss her mom over at the bar.

I think the whole point is that Jesus was God born as man, therefor He didn't think with His smaller head. BTW, Jesus Himself never said one word regarding gays. Any Christian who is so eager to judge another and tell them how to live should rein it in, and try using their own values to run their own life. True. I am a Christian for my benefit, not anyone elses. If anyone had a question, I would try to answer it, but considering the Bible has been around for ages, it's not like its news to anyone. Jesus told people they need to get the log out their own eye before they tell someone else to get the splinter out of theirs. So Jesus' advice to Christians regarding judging others was "Back off!!! Zip it!" People who "cherry pick" quotes from the Bible to make points for or against anything need to learn to read – preferrably silently, and to themselves.

@ Midwest Man: We can't ask Jesus if it's a non-issue. The main reason we can't ask Jesus if it's a non-issue is because Jesus has been dead for 2,000 years. You can't ask dead people questions. Because they're dead. Now, if you'd like to ask a live, real person a question, you can, but you cannot ask dead people questions because they're dead. They do not have the capacity to hear, understand, or speak. Just wanted to clarify.

I think you missed his point entirely. He has been living as an openly gay man for years. He was saying that he didn't feel the need to announce it in a public release. And why should he. Does every actor/performer who is straight go to the celebrity magazines to announce to the world what their preferences are? No. A clear sign that we have moved past intolerance of gays is when those who are famous can do as Knight has done. Which is live his life as an openly gay man without feeling it is necessary to make a news conference about it.

The writer used the exclamation points, not the speaker. Nowadays everybody seems to rely on exclamation points to show happiness in what they write and not appear angry. My guess is the writer wanted to show that Jon was happy and that his words were not angry ones. Moreover, celebrity mags and websites OD on exclamation points. Everything they communicate!!!!!! Please don't blame Jon for that.

Feeniegal and Peter: The parts in quotes are what "Knight, 42, says in a message posted in the members-only section of the NKOTB blog." (Last sentence in third paragraph.) This means he wrote it, exclamation marks and all. Since he is not the one writing THIS article, his words (whether they were originally spoken or written) are represented in quotation marks. The exclamation marks are his, and the quotation marks indicate that.

Although Peter has a point - that some of the tabloids tend to use exclamation marks to try to convey a sense of giddiness to the reader - he's completely dead-in-the-water wrong about them not being Knight's.

And I wondered the same thing – the only sentence of Knight's that doesn't have an exclamation point is the one where he's quoting an imaginary tabloid headline. (Which is a bit ironic...)

It depends on which Jesus you are referring to. If you are referring to the Jesus who preached love, tolerance, and acceptance (such as parable of let he cast the first stone), then that Jesus would have no issues with a gay/lesbian man or woman. If you're speaking of the Jesus of today's intolerant religious establishiments (btw, I'm a Christian) who judge everyone and use HIS name to justify doing so, then no.

      1. It still floors me that folks are still fascinated with someone who declares/choices to be "Gay."
      2. For those Gay pop stars that are now coming out, after they deceived their female listening public, you denied your orientation, out of selfish and greed. I am not hating, because they are not the first or the last that will do it. I reject anyone’s claim that society made them deny/lie to the public. Can u image the countless gays and lesbians that are simply looking for role models, and not entertainers.
      3. For those that invoke Jesus or God. To the extremist and liberal interpreter of the scripture. Please consider the Holy Scriptures in its full authority. The role of Christians is to love our Lord with all of our heart, and the second command is to love ALL others. We r to pray that ALL r reconciled with God before our final judgment before his throne. I leave it up to God in his judgment and righteousness to judge me, and my brothers or sisters. One of my responsibilities is to pray for the lost, and spread the Gospel.

Remember Jesus is the foundation for Christianity and he taught love and understanding of people, and didnt mention gays

Actually Willie I think you would find plenty of people cheering on a criminal if they were doing something like cheating on their taxes or anything else that 'stuck it to the man'
As for intolerant and getting some standards. I guess it all depends on whether those standards are affecting other people or not but to equate accepting gay with agreeing with crime is a bit silly even as an example.

Yes, a lot of you would love to shroud the truth of the matter in controversy, evidently because you have never read the Bible, or don't believe it. That's your choice. But if you claim to follow the Bible, and believe that Jesus was the Son of God, then you will have to accept what he said about how 'God created them from the beginning, male and female, and that a man would leave his father and mother and stick to his wife'......not his/her significant other. Even your own conscience tells you that it's unnatural, but you can choose to ignore it.

Your argument is weak, at best. In fact, its a pretty elementary one (I would expect something similar from a second grade intellect).

You are not a victim of any crime in this case. No one is harming you, or hurting you. To argue that advocating for human rights (gay rights, in this case) makes us inconsistent is, well, pathetic.

Now, if you feel that someone is being victimized in this process, THEN you might have an argument.

'Even your own conscience tells you that it's unnatural, but you can choose to ignore it.'
Practically everything mankind does is unnatural...wearing clothes is not natural, anything manmade that involves processing of somekind is unnatural. Heck even cooking meat can be considered unnatural.
But I'm going to guess you ignore those unnaturals.

Actually Mixmatch, there is undeniable physical proof that Christ existed. There are actual writings from Kings that have written about Christ for starters. Try doing some reading on the subject before making ignorant comments about things you know nothing about.

      How silly.
Your argument is inane. If we do not tolerate crime then why do we tolerate anything? I'll bite. I find Christians obnoxious. I've always tolerated them in the name of fairness. However, by your argument that would make me a hypocrite.
Your whole argument is that tolerance itself is bad. Have YOU read your bible?

I would assume then that those who never marry are equally wrong in the eyes of Jesus. What about divorce? I think he had something to say about that, didn't he?

Why is this a big deal? It shouldn't be!

You don't see straight people going down the street shouting–Hey, I'm straight! If someone is gay, why should they be required to do so? Just live life. Be yourself. No need to draw attention to your own life if you're too busy living it.

2% of the pop. is gay (according to surveys). So WHY must we be subjected to them and their whining so often in the media?

Yeah, it's a nonissue in this day and age and glad to see most of the positive responses. But, I guess people feel the need to hate someone – if it's not gay people then I guess they will have to turn on the people that like vanilla ice cream! It's about the same thing.
