'Glee' creator feuding with Kings of Leon

Things aren't so harmonious between Kings of Leon and "Glee" creator Ryan Murphy.

In a new interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Murphy says he's miffed at the rockers for refusing to let the cast sing the hit "Use Somebody" on the show.

"F— you, Kings of Leon,” Murphy says in a tirade against the band. "They're self-centered a-—s, and they missed the big picture. They missed that a 7-year-old kid can see someone close to their age singing a Kings of Leon song, which will maybe make them want to join a glee club or pick up a musical instrument. It's like, OK, hate on arts education. You can make fun of 'Glee' all you want, but at its heart, what we really do is turn kids on to music."

And while Kings of Leon drummer Nathan Followill thinks that Murphy should "let it go. See a therapist, get a manicure, buy a new bra. Zip your lip and focus on educating 7 yr olds how to say [expletive]," as he tweeted Wednesday, the group's lead singer Caleb Followill says it's all a misunderstanding. (By the way: Nathan has issued an apology on his Twitter page, saying, "I'm sorry 4 anyone that misconstrued my comments as homophobic or misogynistic. I'm so not that kind of person. I really do apologize.")

"This whole 'Glee' thing is a shock to us. It's gotten out of hand," Caleb told CNN in a statement.

"At the time of the request, we hadn't even seen the show. It came at the end of that record cycle, and we were over promoting ["Use Somebody"]. This was never meant as a slap in the face to 'Glee' or to music education or to fans of the show. We're not sure where the anger is coming from. We just said no to a license for a TV show, which we do a lot."

I don't get Glee....at all. It's like a glorified high school play or musical. They are literally ruining songs left and right. Why would Kings of Leon agree to have their song butchered by a bunch of karaoke hacks? Anybody who truly loves and respects music and musicians would never be inspired by Glee. I don't know what's more dumbfounding to me. That America loves Glee or that America has made Snookie famous. Or maybe it's just that America is full of Snookie's.

And Kings of Leon is an awful band – remember, they bailed on a concert because of birds – real cool and professional to do to your fans.

Ryan Murphy's narcissism is jaw-dropping! Forget that Glee is an awful, AWFUL show, but even if it wasn't, they're not saving lives here – he said that KOL should do it for the kids to make them join a 'Glee' club or pick up a musical instrument?! Reality check buddy – people pick up musical instruments because they are inspired by actual musicians, not by dime-a-dozen karaoke singers who can't do anything original. Dude – get real.

This is the strangest feud I've heard of in a long time. What doesn't make sense is that Ryan Murphy can't let it go. So what if KOL doesn't want you using their song in the show? This is just giving KOL some much needed press. If the song had been used in the show, no one would be saying anything about it.

do do do do do do ....Mary do you want to ? I'll waive my right. KOL is the best. And is the best band since the Beatles and U2. Glee is a dumb show. Caleb, thank you for not letting these idiots kill your beautiful music. You are awesome. Can't wait for the next Album.

  7. Long Live the Kings

This Ryan Murphy obviously doesn't know how to take a hint. Months ago I heard that KOL turned down the offer from Glee. Use Somebody was played to death anyway, and I suggest that Murphy spends a little less time feuding with the Kings and a little more time finding songs he's allowed to cover. KOL will never sell out to Glee.

Glee has had so much buzz around it, and I've tried to watch it several times. Really, I tried to give it a chance. But I wouldn't liken it to "arts education" at all.
I think the real big picture is that Ryan Murphy found an easy formula for a show that makes him a lot of money.
There isn't much artistic integrity or originality in slapping together half-a$$ed plots with shallow characters, and spending the majority of the show time riding the popularity of songs other people wrote.
A few kids might pick up an instrument, but it won't be Glee that teaches them to be creative or inspire them to write THEIR OWN music.

I agree with KOL completly. Let me say this if KOL does not want Glee to use 'use somebody' than so be it. I remember back when Green Day never got paid for when Seinfeld used Time of you life(good riddence).

I completely understand Ryan Murphy's anger and frustration especially when Kings of Leon had already agreed to have Glee cover "Use Somebody". That means that the writers had to go back and redo/edit any story they had that included the use of the song. Although KOL's decison to back out was a bit shady, it's unacceptable for Murphy to react that way. His words were incredibly immature and I hope he issues some kind of apology because his actions directly affect the opinion people have of Glee, its cast, and its creators.

Don't blame KOL if Ryan thought everyone would bow down to him and let him use the song. The song was overplayed plus some karaoke show can't even get trouble the deepness of KOL and a lot of other Rock bands. If anything the is teaching kids that unless you have a beautiful voice and face don't even bother. Kids don't pick up instruments because people are singing. Kings of Leon get doing your thing. I have love all of your albums and the new one is no exception. You shouldn't have to apologise because Ryan is always turning something into a gay rights issue.

Hahahahaha!!! "The deepness of KOL" Both the idiocy and incorrect grammar of this statement have made my day. Sweetie, if you want deep music, you absolutely will not find it on the radio and MTV. Open your mind, little one.

OK,,, First off,,, WHO is this Kings of Leon? How many hits have they have and how long will they be or been relevant ?

Secondly,, Murphy, give it a rest... there are MANY MANY songs out there from bands as big as KOL,,, how about asking Flock of Seagulls if you can sing their two songs?

KOL have been around since 2003. Best album is Aha Shake Heartbreak. Best song is Taper Jean Girls. If you were listening to something other than the Jonas Brothers or Miley Cyrus you'd have heard of them.

Kings have sold over 11 million records world wide. They have multiple grammy's. They headline tours that sell out 65 thousand + seat arenas.

I'm not a big fan (never seen them) and even I understand they are so much more important to the music landscape than Glee will ever be. They'll be around and remembered LONG after Glee is just a footnote. Ryan Murphy is a putz.

First off, I don't listen to any of that teeny bopper crap Jonas, Cyrus or Swift junk, but my music tastes vary all over the map. Secondly,, it was a joke man, I KNOW who KOL are, I've listened to their stuff. However being in existence for 7 years is not what I would call "rooted" into the music industry, there are many many groups that go to the way side after being around longer. And lastly, while I will not call my 46yo self a Gleek, I will say that I watch the show. It's fun and harmless, and not some group of Jersey punks acting like there are no rules to life and showing the world what true lowlifes they are.

  12. Be Quiet

Ryan Murphy needs to get over himself. How DARE anyone not allow their song to be on MY SHOW?!! Like Glee is the end-all-be-all or something? Get real!

It's a C-minus show (at best) and anyone with a brain would keep their songs off of it. Good for KOL, a band which I've always loved, and love even more after reading this.

Ryan Murphy is assuming that Glee is the sole source of getting kids to become more interested in the arts. If his heart is int he right place, he should be donating part of the Glee proceeds to help arts funding in schools that are being cut or look into outreach programs that will work with the cast. Murphy needs to get off his high horse!

Sounds like KOL took the high road, and good for them. Frankly, Murphy's "Let me use your song to promote my show or I'll accuse you of hating on arts education" rant is deeply cynical and narcissistic. The petulant rant against KOL is clearly meant to draw even more attention to his already over-exposed program

I agree. The KOL have the right to choose where and how their songs are played. Who does this Ryan guy think he is???

My opinion of Ryan Murphy has been on the decline for a long time, and I definitely think even less of him now that he's stated that he thinks the world revolves around Glee. And for the record, Use Somebody was sooo overplayed. KOL made the right choice. Murphy's probably just peeved that one of the most popular rock bands right now couldn't give 2 craps about his show. Apparently Slash from Guns N Roses denied them the rights to one of their songs because he thinks Glee sucks, and Murphy got all poopy pants about that too. Slash is allowed to hate Glee. Not everybody is going to worship Ryan Murphy.

    • I respect Slash more now

Yeah- and Ryan Murphy thought that because Slash doesn't like Glee it means that he is "ignorant" and that his career is pretty much over. Why on earth would you think that Slash of all people would be into musical theater? It doesn't make someone a bad person. It's not like Glee is Save the Music- they don't donate their proceeds to charity, something that Slash has actually helped by performing at benefit concerts for Save the Music. Ryan Murphy comes off like a spoiled brat and a bully. Apparently you can only celebrate being different if being different doesn't involve not liking Glee.
