Oprah Winfrey has a secret sisterOprah Winfrey revealed on her television show Monday morning that she has a half-sister she knew nothing about. The sister, Patricia, had been kept a secret by Oprah's mother who put her up for adoption at birth. "For the most part my life has been an open book," Oprah said. "I thought nothing could surprise me but I was wrong." Winfrey said she chose to make the announcement herself so the media would not exploit it. Her sister, Patricia, spoke about being put up for adoption at birth, spent time in foster care and longed to be reunited with her foster mother. By 17 she was a single mother, Patricia said, and six years later she had another child. When she was 20, she sought out information about her birth mother and then let it go until years later, Patricia said. The agency contacted Patricia in 2007 with the news that her birth mother did not want to meet her on the same day she saw a local news story that had an interview with Oprah's mother which gave her information that matched up with what Patricia knew about her birth family. "We realized that Oprah could be my sister," Patricia said. Winfrey told her audience that it was true that Patricia was her sister. Patricia said she kept her family connection a secret after unsuccessfully trying to reach Oprah's mother, Vernita Lee. Patricia tracked down Winfrey's niece who is the daughter of Oprah's other half-sister. The pair did a DNA test and it was revealed that they were indeed aunt and niece. That started the ball rolling with family members reaching out to Winfrey who eventually confirmed with her mother that the story was true. Winfrey shared with the audience home video of her first meeting with her sister this past Thanksgiving Day when Winfrey and her partner Stedman Graham drove to Milwaukee to finally meet her sister. Winfrey broke down a bit when expressing why she admires her half-sister so much. The talk show host said she has had so many people betray her since she became a celebrity and she was moved by the fact that Patricia kept the story secret. "She never once thought to go to the press," Winfrey said. "She never once thought to sell this story." Ironically, Winfrey also had another half-sister named Patricia who died in 2003. That sister was unable to overcome drug abuse and her resemblance to her new half-sister was noted often. Winfrey said she had placed that sister twice into rehab. "For me, you are Pat on her very best day,” Winfrey said to her new half-sister. “You are who she wanted to be without the drugs.” The pair sat down with their mother, Vernita Lee, and Oprah asked about her feelings learning about and being reunited with Patricia. "I was so shocked to know that she was trying to get in touch with me," Lee said. "When I first heard about her, I wasn't afraid but I was a little leery." Winfrey said she had an epiphany after leaving the meeting at her mother's house: that Lee has been unable to fully embrace her new daughter because she is still carrying the shame of what she had done. "I would like to say to our mother, you can let that shame go," Winfrey said. "You can let that go." Winfrey also said that she had a realization about her deceased sister Pat who had sold the story of Winfrey's out-of-wedlock pregnancy to the tabloids which caused a rift between them. Winfrey said meeting her new half-sister helped her realize that her other sister going to the tabloids was actually beneficial. "For the first time, I realized that was a gift to me," Winfrey said. "It was gift because it released me from my shame." Winfrey asked Patricia what has been the most rewarding part of the journey for her. "Getting my family," she said.

Oprah tries to soften things by saying the mother is ashamed of the stigma of the adoption. The only thing the mother is ashamed of is that her secret is out in public. Shame on you Vernita Lee!!! Oprah gave you enough money over the years for you to bring home your daughter and reveal your secret to her. You owe Oprah a decent apology. Adoption is a good thing when it is done for the best interest of the child. I have always known by reading Oprah's bio that her mother was not a decent woman.

Is the sister a racists as well?
I think this is really Oprah's daughter. Not her sister. The baby she had at 14 and supposedly died at birth. Common sense-why would Oprah's mother have a baby in 1963 and name it Patricia when she already had another daughter alive at the same time, also named Patricia who died in 2003. I think Oprah has paid a few people off to change a few dates, I E. Birth dates. I don't believe that this "sister" was born in 1963, more like 1968. Big money can fix anything.

I have come to the conclusion that some people will always have hate in their hearts. I read all the comments and can't believe the raciest,mean spirited things people have said. I find it interesting that every comment against Oprah receives a "you are jealous of her money" comment. I don't see people ever saying..."you are jealous of her wonderful personality, or great looks or truly inspiring nature, kind soul" etc. Even her followers seem to admit that all she has is money. Money is nice for sure, but some people here have qualities that money doesn't buy. How many people here have donated blood, kidneys, time to help others. No price on that.

Honestly, Opra Winfrey needs to retire. Her show sucks and the people on the show are extremely annoying. Not the guests, but the other idiots. I stopped watching her show a long time ago. This story about her sister was a timely one, anyone notice?
She talks of how IMPORTANT family is and look American she forget about her own... Wow! I honestly I stop watching her show last year, because she is so full of it!!! And she is still with a married MAD-steadman....

Good for Oprah for sharing the story and I hope she and Patricia develop a strong bond. This was not only about finding biological family. It also showed the biological family members accepting of the newly found sister, cousin and niece. If Oprah will open that door how many others may now be willing to do the same. That's the real story. These situations happen in all communities.

19 years ago, my SIL found their brother also given up for adoption at birth. Can I get on Oprah to discuss it. For a few friends it was kinda cool but not so much for the rest of the world. NO ONE CARES

I personally think this is a wonderful thing to happen to Oprah and Patricia. A similar thing happened to me in 2007 and is continuing to get better today. I started looking in 2007 for my birth parents. I had lived many years with "No known blood relatives" I wanted to find my birth father, mother, and siblings. In 2007 I found part of my family in my father's town. My father was deceased, but I found his widow and numerous siblings. Only one refused to meet me, the others have been very caring,thoughtful, friendly and welcomed me into their family. I am the oldest of the children. What a wonderful experience to be connected to my birth family. There is still one missing link!!!! My birth mother, if alive, she just celebrated her 90th birthday. Her name is Twila Elizabeth, I pray every day she is still alive and I will find her before it is too late. It is part of my life I am still missing and I am so happy for Oprah, Patricia and Vernita that they have found each other before it was too late for them... May they enjoy the years that they have together... I hope this will happen for me.. One thing I was interested in finding was medical issues that the birth family had that were similar to mine. I found out many things I battled were things they also battled, that was very helpful. Bless all of you Oprah, I am so happy for you. I love your show and the wonderful things you do for others. I wish you would continue... Thats the way I have tried to live my life, helping others... It got me through the "No Known Blood Relatives Syndrome" Everyone had the possibility of being a relative!!!!! Yesterday's show was wonderful, it really hit me... Brought back the day I found my siblings... Fantastic Experience!!!! The best to you Oprah!!!!

Has anyone wondered why Oprah didn't remember her mom being pregnant with her newest half sister, Patricia? Oprah would have been about 10 years old back then, wouldn't Oprah remember something like that - one minute the mom is pregnant and then the next, there is no baby? From what I understand, Oprah lived with her Mom unti a couple of years after the birth/adoption of Patricia, when Oprah left to go live with her dad, Vernon.

Oprah Winfrey has worked hard to be a success in her estimation of what the world deems is a success. She also appears tohave been searching for herself along with becoming a success. I admire her for that. The fact remains though that she is condoning & glorifying her mother's behavior. I'm a paralegal & everyday I see people like Vernita Lee and Patricia who have had too many children with men they seldom can even find after a baby is born. It's a sad commentary on morals, ethics and principles that this behavior should get any favorable attention because this behavior results in unwanted, abused and neglected children we as a society must care for and must deal with delinquent behavior.

How sad that so many people choose to use a blog like this to be so negative and hateful. You know the saying, "If you can't say something nice....don't say anything." Yes, there are things going on in the world that are much more important, but right now we aren't looking at those headlines, we're looking at info about Oprah, so we must find it interesting on some level – everyone who has commented. Oprah is a celebrity and does make the headlines. So do many other celebrities, many of whom I don't care to know about, but our society has almost demanded information about the private lives of celebrities, and society is getting what the media thinks it wants. I think it was respectful to the newly found sister that Oprah introduced her. They were able to talk openly and honestly about the situation, and I'm happy that they are happy. I don't understand why it has to be anything more than that.

Family secrets cause much pain and anger to the innocent. Oprah shared her story and yes it can be earth shattering when it happens to you. If this show opens one door for another person in a similar position as Patricia it was well worth the effort. My husband was never allowed to meet his father & siblings primarily because some of the father's family members thought it would ruin the father's family name. Meanwhile my husband grew up in poverty in an extremely abusive home. Good for Oprah and Patricia for sharing this heart warming story. It is a huge deal.

I don't mean any harm. I like Oprah as well as the next person, but really? What about people losing their homes? What about innocent people/police officers being killed? What about health care for those who have none? So she has a half sister? A lot of people do! It's called today's society! I thought it was something better than that!
My mother found 4 half sisters. They threatened her with legal action if she tried to talk with them again and she had known them their whole lives. They were embarrassed. What I know for sure is that Oprah is a women who really has the best interest of others at heart. No matter how much one may say negative about who she is, the fact remains that she has made a difference in this world in many ways. Her efforts have helped many and for one to say she is selfish and does not care is not a valid statment. It is my hope that we would all view this as a time of change for her and her family and respect the privacy as much as we can as they learn about each other. it does not matter when she knew, she admits she knew and in that has come forward. I applaud her for stepping out and bringing this to light as she has and not allowing something bigger to come of this, as we all knwo secrest are turned into more media news in a negative way than her come forward ever would. So we either hate for her speaking the truth, or we hate for her hiding it, as a human race we can't have it both ways. Then when I turned 34 I found out he was really my brother from another mother. Oprah's mother sat their being interviewed by Oprah like they were just another stranger and guest on her show. Oprah's mom never looked at the daughter she gave up for adoption. Oprah kept saying and why did you give up the baby and the baby this and the baby that. THe baby was sitting there grown up with a name. Oprah's body language was so remote and estranged with her blood relatives she looked quite pained. However with Gayle her BBF she enjoys her presence and it shows. I guess even celebrity Billionaires have dysfunctional familes that they're embarassed by too. Oprah is the one that should be happy to have her new found sister. This lady and her children inspite of all they have gone through, seems to be a Class Act!

Oprah did not have to worry about the media exploiting her story-she did it herself by making the big announcement a few days later . She just had to alert everyone about the impending story. I'm glad she found more family but I'm disappointed she announced it and got ratings out of it.

The announcements on tv have been soooo self-centered. was legally sactioned? The very bothersome thing is that it's all OK now because Oprah has absolved us of our sins and shame. No shame, no sin? What sort of example is this family giving young people by hanging their dirty laundry out to dry on mass media? How are we to measure societal morals?

This is an amazing story. Good for the both of them and their entire family. I watched the show and her sister appears to be an absolute sweetheart. I wish their family the best. And for all the haters on here give credit for where it's due. How can you critize this story? We need a refreshing story from time to time. Most of what the media reports is depressing anyway!

Can't stand the woman personally but have tons of respect for her. She has little talent but a lot of drive and has made herself and her staff rich. I'm glad she found her sibling. who cares if its on TV? It's her show and if youi dont' like it don't watch it. I found my brothers and sisters about five years ago and wouldn't trade that for anything in the world.
I too found I had an older half sister when my father confessed after my mothers' death that "someone might contest the will". I was in my 40's and it completely turned my life into a turmoil as my father blamed my mother for the lack of connection. It took several years of finding and asking virtually all Mom's closest friends to realize my Dad had lied to avoid his responsibility and my mother truly was the gracious and generous woman i had believed her to be. I was able to locate my half sister, connect and develop a relationship with her, introduce her to our siblings and her father. Finally – tho reluctantly – he accepted her as his daughter. Judy (my half-sister) and her mother knew all about "our" family but had made the decision not to cause conflict and had forgiven Dad for his neglect, Interestingly, many members of my father's family also knew about Judy. Both Dad and my half-sister Judy have passed away now, but my life was so blessed in getting to know this brave, honorable, and loving woman. I applaud Oprah's family for the journey they are taking together.

There is no greater treasure on earth than to find family you never knew you had. 2 sisters found me long after we became adults. (1/2 sisters for those of you who measure). I don't measure. The love was immediate and real. and I connected to them just like the other 3 sisters I have. I am happy for both Oprah and her sister.
I'm so glad to know this "prefixed" sister appears to be the right half, not the wrong half, nor just the top, or bottom half; she appears to be the whole thing. My grandsons were upset and crying because they thought Oprah's half-sister had been seriously injured in some way and was "only" half a person.

I think this is not her sister, but her daughter. I heard that the baby survived and has been raised by relatives. If they are about 15 years apart, I would definitely not fall for this "news". The singer, Bobby Darin, found out in his 30's that his older sister was really his mother. Stranger things have happened.

And her half sister that she just recently was reunited with was also named Patricia by the people in foster care where she was placed.

The same thing happened to my mom . After the death of my grandfather she found out she had a half sister. As it turned out her & my aunt had quite a bit in common. My sister & I thought it was great that all of a sudden we had another aunt!

At one point in the article it says that the sister wanted to contact the mother... but the mother didn't want to talk to her. A real nice person, don't you think? Patricia might have gone to the press then. But she did her own detective work to find out that she was a relative. I don't really think too much of Oprah, but I think much less of the mother. She's probably well set because of Oprah, but she was willing to let Patricia rot even after she knew that Patricia had figured it out. Pretty disgusting. Oprah doesn't want to start a family fight, but this is crazy. If I was Patricia I would never want to be in the same room with 'mom'. And why mom didn't come clean after all the years of Oprah's success is almost criminal. Disgusting. I know. I already said that, but it fits.

Personally I find this an interesting human story. I've rarely (maybe 3 or 4 times) watched Oprah's show; the only time I've seen it is in doctor's waiting rooms or some such thing. For those of you who are so sick of her, why read the story or even comment on it? Oprah is a very successful woman with a turbulent history; it's inspiring that she's made so much of her life. May they find joy in finding each other and forming their relationship.
Why does this woman think that everyone needs to know everything going on in her life. Perhaps she can follow examples of billionaires like Warren Buffet and Bill Gates who keep their personal lives to themselves. I'm pretty tired of the constant press about what this woman is doing. She and others like her least realize how completely self serving they come across which in time diminishes their popularity.

I'm shocked at some of the comments people have placed under this report. While I must admit it I was expecting a little more than this, I'm not disappointed with it. With everything going on in the world today its nice to hear some positive things every now and then. What happened to people being happy for one another? In a lot of people's minds, Oprah will be remembered for the Paris store fiasco. It wasn't racism, Oprah; the store was just closed. That's it, that was the entire story, but she played it up for ratings. I lost a lot of respect for her that day.

If you could prove any blood relation to Oprah, of course you'd make it known...if only to get some money and position out of the deal. I know it's extremely un-PC to say so, but that's a heck of a family Ms. O comes from. She was born to teen parents, to a mother who had kids with multiple partners and gave them away (Oprah was largely raised by others). Her half sister was a teen parent. Someone in the family impregnated Oprah when she was 14. Oprah is promoted as some great example of success and aspiration for black Americans. I don't see that.
Oprah is a role model precisely because she came through a rough childhood full of ignorance and shame and abuse and made a success of her life in spite of all that. No one is perfect, certainly not Oprah, but admirable? I think so.
So, she is to be condemned for the actions of her so-called family? Oprah is the epitome the American Dream. She came from abject poverty, she survived physical abuse and a dysfunctional family life. I have always thought that Oprah is lesbian and is just waiting for the right moment to let it be known. Lord knows she is very generous with her money giving to charities and supporting people the world over. I'm sure her sister will be well taken care of. What jumps out to me is that Oprah is a Billionaire and I am so surprised that she only paid twice for her sisters re-hab but gives away hundreds of cars to strangers. It just goes to show how we treat our audiances and strangers better than we do our own family. Its nice to have so many people love you especailly when we dont feel it from our own family.I can admit I have treated strangers better and at times still do. I have to catch myself. I dont know why we do it but we do. Something as simple as I may hold the door open for a stranger but walk ahead of my hubby and wait inside, or worse tell my son he can get it his arms not broke. If I had that kind of money my sister would be in rehab every 28 days if she wanted, because (in Oprah's defense now) it is only fro those that want it not those that need it. Oprah didn’t have to do anything for her sister. She’s not obligated to help her sister get clean. She didn’t make her sister do drugs. Besides you don’t know the whole story. It's just possible that the sister who went to rehab didn't want to be clean. We don't know. Just because we want to help someone, doesn't mean that the help will be received or appreicated! I personally feel that much of the dislike for Oprah is due to the fact that she is a woman (very successful) of color and there is still a huge percentage of people who can't handle that! We've still got a long way to go in the country to move past the prejudices that so many have, it shows over and over unfortunately, in words, actions and deeds!

I just recently had the same experence...after 40 years I met my father for the first time, along with two half siblings and a host of aunt's and uncle's I had never known. To say the least it was overwheling, I had mixed feelings about the whole thing but I did record it to capture the event and to find our other siblings. God Bless her and her new family!

Why are so many of you so negative? She started with nothing, could have turned out much differently. She did something with her life, and has helped many others. What have you done with your lives? What about the charities you support? If you don't like her, don't watch. I don't have time or interest to watch, I work during that time. But do admire her.

Although all of us on this earth are related, family ties – be they biological, adoptive, foster or friends – affect us all deeply. Although I love my adoptive family dearly and wouldn't be who I am without them, I can say that finding out about and meeting my biological family in my '40s was the most profound experience of my life. I don't mean to imply that the biological part is in any way more important, but being adopted can be complicated and dealing with the adoption part touches deeply. No matter what Oprah's status as entertainer or whatever, she's sharing with all a deeply personal story. To those of you who are adopted, I hope you find the families you are looking for and that all find good in that connection, to those of you who gave us children, be not afraid of reconnection and let the shame go (if that's what you felt) and to those of you who adopted us, know that we don't love you less because we sought to extend our family.

"A woman's heart is an ocean full of secrets". I don't know who actually made that statement but it is so true. I have lost so many family members due to one reason or another. I would consider it a gift from God to find out I had a sister I had not known about. Everyone has their own way of handling such information and so in this case Oprah has the right to handle this in her own way. Leave it to the media to get people squabbling over which news deserves more press. But, I have to agree this should have been in the Entertainment section exclusively and not included in the same headlines with the 31 lost souls in the Moscow blast, or the 7 police officers shot over the weekend defending this country from the ever increasing battle of firearms getting into the hands of unstable people. Thank God none of the officers died and may he bless those in recovery.

When you are a celebrity, nothing is a secret. So why should Oprah be the one to make this announcement of her half-sister? Would it have been better if some reporter did it and did not report the truth..would it make for better reading? I think not. Hmmm,,, so how did this not come out during the geneology research (aired on PBS) that Henry Gates did on Oprah - tracing her ancestry all the way back to Liberia & slavery? Either the historians were not thorough OR Oprah elected to omit that info during the tv viewing. Always so many secrets with her and always dramatic in order to spin it into a show.
DNA testing is not going to tell you that you have a sister out there somewhere. It'll only tell you where you came from going backwards or match you to people also tested.

Folks, quit pretending not to care. I have never seen Oprah on TV. I saw her in The Color Purple and thought it was a great movie. She is interesting because of her success in a world that made it difficult for a black woman to reach the level she has. I do not pretend not to be curious. I do not actually care one way or another about her personally but a few people in the entertainment business have slightly more interesting lives than others.
