Willow Smith to star in 'Annie' remake?

Is Willow Smith getting ready to whip curly red hair back and forth? Count on it, if her dad Will Smith gets his way.

The superstar is reportedly looking to redo the popular musical "Annie" with his 10-year-old daughter in the lead, reports Variety.

Willow's previous acting experience includes roles in "I Am Legend," "Kit Kittredge: An American Girl," "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa" and "True Jackson, VP" - not to mention that she also has a hit record with last year's single "Whip My Hair."

Reps for the project wouldn't confirm whether the new "Annie" would be set in contemporary times and include original songs, although it's rumored that Jay-Z is working on the music (his 1998 tune "Hard Knock Life" included a chorus from the musical).

This isn't the first time Will has produced movies for his kids. He developed last year's "The Karate Kid" remake for his son Jaden.

Annie is a white red head child not black kid. Not only that i dont think hos kids can even act. The only reason the other movie that his son was in was a big hite was because Jackie was in it not because of Wills son.Yo Smith family get over yourself.

Is her acting skills up to ability. Not what color her skin is.

I think it will be good to try something new but im just so used to seeing Annie as being white with red hair. Kinda like it should be but it may turn out okay. We will have to see. Anyways I love Annie! My fave is the 1999 version but I like some scenes alittle better in the 1982 version. But no matter how the movie turns out, the two Annies I know and love will always be what I want to remember. Both were excellent for the part in their own ways and nothing will change that.

To me this is not a black/white thing, It's a memory thing, a memory of the movie Annie the way I remember it. It was one of my fav movies growing up & now as I get older I see more & more movies getting remade, some are good & some not so much. It sucks cuz remaking movies messes with the memory of the "older version" of it so then you're stuck remembering the movie as it is now & not what it was then... I just think some movies should be left alone! Please don't mess up Annie for me! I LOVE Will Smith & always have but I really can't see his daughter as Annie or anyone else as Annie.

Why!?!?!?!? NOOOO! You CANNOT remake Annie!
we are doing the play at my school. It's set in the 30's, so if Annie is black, it will be SO unbeliveable. And if they change the setting i will be dissapointed, but if they do not use the original songs....I will be MAD! Annie is so great! I'm all for remakes, but nooooo, not Annie. I"m not trying to be racist, and willow actually is a very good singer. But if they change the songs It'll suck!

Okay, I have no problem with movies being remade and more diverse. I actually think its a great thing, i.e. the newer version of Cinderella with Whitney Houston and Brandy. BUT Cinderella was not only a fictional character but an animation. Annie, however was played by an actual person and was so popluar and stood out due to her red hair and freckles. Furthermore, its not about anything negative against black or white people, but about someone fitting the description and charactersitics of why Annie was so well known and how that should be greatly considered when picking the lead role. And not solely because your dad is remaking the movie just so his child can star in it. Im sure that if someone was redoing a movie based a well-known black person...it would be viewed by many as unacceptable if someone white starred it just becasue their "daddy" made it possible.

This is the most stupidest thing I have ever heard of. I mean come on who ever heard of a black Annie. Ever since the very first comic strip came out Annie has been known for her red hair....RED HAIR people!! Besides that fact what exactly is Will Smith teaching his kids? That you don't have to work for anything in this world because daddy will just hand it over to you on a silver platter. Why not make them try out for the part with other hard working actors & actresses? Not cool Will, not cool at all.

I was not aware that India played the role of Annie on Broadway. Good for her. I've seen some of her work and she is very talented. And like JD said some posts here are just ignorant.

Willow will not be the first black actress to portray this character. India Scandrick portayed Annie on broadway, she is the same actress now portraying Nala in the broadway version of Lion King. This character is fictional and open to interpretation, I will leave judgement until I actully see the movie. I am actually hping for an updated version, justifying a remake becuase the classic is one of my favorites and I hope they do not attemt to do this as a period piece.

An Annie make over is perfectly reasonable especially given this is a character from a comic strip. Comments about a white man cast as MLK, Malcolm X or remake with all white cast of The Color Purple or Roots just flag the post as ignorant. If the Smiths want to do this good for them. Remakes are not intended to be the same. I wish the Smiths well in this endeavor and hope it does much better in the theaters than the first Annie film....which didn't turn a profit.

And personally I would love to see Jenifer Lewis in the role of Ms Hannigan. That woman is fantastic!

This is a remake of a fictional children's story. Nothing new here. Remakes are done all the time. Makes no difference that a Black child will play Annie. Will & Jay-Z have something most of you posting here do not: vision. Classics are the favorite remakes. Do you realize how many versions of A Christmas Carol there are. Scrooge has been rewritten as Black women twice. Cecily Tyson and Vanessa Williams. Both good films. This isn't meant to be the same movie as already exists. So what if the comic strip depicts a white kid with red hair. The character can be revamped into any nationality or ethnic background. And so what if the Smith kids have joined the family business. This is normal in the entertainment world. many of todays stars have celebrity parents and grandparents. Look at the Douglas family. They've done a film with 3 generations represented. Look at Drew Barrymore. She's great but would she be where she is now if she wasn't a Barrymore? This should not be pulled down into the gutter of racism. This film will do fine and more than likely be as much of a classic as the one done years ago. I'm looking forward to a fresh new updated version of Annie.

I am appalled that here we are in 2011 supposedly in the most progressive nation in the world and people continue to think so backwards on race. And stooping to a level of calling a 10 year old child names. You should be ashamed. I am so thankful I taught my children better than that. And they are teaching their children better than that too. We should be interested in the human race, not skin shade.

At the end of the day its just another movie!!!!!

First off in my opinion i think that willow is a little to small to be acting or so she need more of a kid life I think! but then if I had the money and fame and my kid says daddy I wanna be an actress wouldnt i move heaven and earth to let it be?
Its saddly how america uses any situation to express you racist opression? Whats the point? You are right some roles are fit for some people, brad pitt cant be shaka zulu but then who gives a f*&%# who plays who nowadays? Why no one complained when movies came out using a black president way before obama, saying that president role in movies iss for white people? There is a line really thin between what i want and what i can, many of us want things but cant, others like the Smith family what they want they can have! Its just life. I like them they have made good movies ( didnt like that much W.W.W he should have taken the ROLE OF NEO on MATRIX YES HE WAS OFFERED BUT HE DECLINED!!) Most of you that are on the hater role will end up in movie theather watching it... Its just life.

I get some of the arguments about Willow. However, the "she can't play this part because there are no black redheads" argument is unfounded. In fact, it's very believable for me because I come from a family with 100 percent, out of the womb, black gingers. Freckles and all. I definitely don't wish the child ill. Only time will tell if she's a good actor.

Willow is a child and it is sad that her parents do not see the need for her to get a good education instead of getting her involved in showbusiness. She should be in school like most 10 year old little girls. Her parents have enough money to support the family, so why is she and her brother out there trying to support themselves. They both should be in school and enjoying their childhood.

I think what everyone here seems to be forgetting is that Annie is a FICTIONAL character. You cannot compare Willow Smith playing Annie to a white person playing MLK.

However, my problem is that Will Smith can't come up with any original ideas. He has to keep putting his kids in remakes. That's what bothers me.

It is just a remake people, heck we have no information about what that would actually entail. They may choose to benchmark so-to-speak from the original musical/ movie but put it into todays times. The original storyline was set in the 1920's. I think for this movie to do well with Willow as the lead character they would have to alter the timeframe (to the 70's through current time) but that is just my opinion. The original story was based off the comic strip from the 20's and it is solely based on a red-headed irish orphan. To do a remake and not bomb they really would need to change the storyline up a bit. Whatever they do choose to do, I wish them well on their project!!

I say go for it, but ditch the red curls. Modernize the story – set it in a time and place where Annie could be African-American. If Beyonce could be Dorothy in The Muppets Wizard of Oz, Willow can be Annie – but not the same Annie as Aileen Quinn. Beyonce didn't try to emulate Judy Garland; she was her own version of Dorothy. And Willow can do the same.

All this talk about Annie originally being white is ridiculous. Anytime Hollywood starts production on a film that requires a black female, they always hire Angelina Jolie who is white. Cleopatra and Ron Pearlman's wife for example were women of color. Keep in mind hollywood is not black or white...it's green. Since Angelina guarantees box office profits she gets these roles, regardless of cinematic integrity. Why shouldn't Willow be allowed to play Annie? Come to think of it most orphans aren't even white...

I just dont like how it seems that thier dad pays for them tot be in all these roles. if they were really interested in pursuing acting or singing, then Will Smith wouldn't need to pay for all this producing. The kids would find roles that suited them better. For example, annie was a poor little orphan girl growing up in the previous century, Willow pulling THAT off owuld be a miracle, because her acting experience is based off of nepotism, not skill. same with her singing, if you can call it that... id ont, but its a matter of personal preference, not age or racial discrimination...

Maybe next Will should play Derek Vineyard from American History X, that would make sense or how about Neil Armstrong in the first moon landing. I have no problem with a black girl playing Annie. What I have a problem with is that it seems that Will & Jada Smith are almost trying to pimp their kids in Hollywood. Will was 17 years old when he started in the music industry professionally. Willow is 10. Jaden is 12. To me, that seems too young to be entering into the real, sometimes cruel world of entertainment. They need to be kids and have a normal childhood. As normal as one can get who's parents are superstars. Just my opinion.

She's not a good actress or a good singer. She only gets the parts she has because of who her parents are. She wouldn't have done the songs without her parents putting up tons of money. Are your parents rich? If so, they you, too, can become an actor and singer. It's about who you know and who you are related to. Sadly, it seems like it is no longer about having talent. When I see Willow and her older brother, I see two VERY smug children.

  67. Ignorance wins again

These comments I'm reading are ridiculous, but I refuse to believe racism still exists in 2011; I think the term is ignorance. For those of you making the comments about making movies with Martin Luther King as a white, you should really reevaluate that statement. MLK is an actual person, Annie is a fictional character. You people (blacks and whites)are acting as if she's an historical figure or something. When a black person play the Role of Elvis or John F. Kennedy, then by all means get mad! Get your pit forks and fire torches and have a riot, but until then there's nothing to worry about. Anyone of any color can be an orphan, not just a curly haired, red headed white girl, I don't understand the uproar. If I'm hearing right, the problem is she doesn't have red hair or curls? My challenge to you all is to get upset about something that really matters because this hostility thats being built up over a fictional character is absurd..I'm disapppointed at the people of America! There's a war going on, and all anyone can worry about is a fictional character. Also the B.E.T comment, yes B.E.T. is a black television station, but I've seen plenty of whites on there, if I recall B.E.T. was airing Justin Bieber first single like crazy. I'm a twenty year old black female, and it kills me to see that people are still just as shallow now as they were several decades ago. The time you spend judging people could be used to do something productive. I grew up watching Annie, know the songs and sung along plenty of times; but I never thought playing her part was limited to a color. If some kids read these comments their dreams would be ruined you're telling them Them that they can't be cinderella, shirley temple, or even hannah montana(whoever they're favorite character is)...because of there color? Ignorance at its best, Icons are always imitated people...The fact that they even would consider remaking Annie should be respected, because I doubt it would be even close to a big money maker so Suck it up people!!!

To bad for their kids. Just because they put a nig in the white house, that does not mean black kids should be in a remake of a movie/play involving a white kid. It would be one thing if they were talented or they went through the ranks in hollywood and were hired on merit and skill rather than nepotism. If they weren't his kin no one on earth would know of their existence and we would be happy. Anyone else find it a little suspect that big daddy will "produces" the movies his kids "act" in. It shouldn't be about race but guess what? It is, like it or not. If he made an original movie with his kid nobody would care. Problem is he's remaking a movie that was about a white girl. Alter that by casting a black girl is asking for it. As MANY people on hear have brought out, the same reaction would be there if race was reversed. That's life, not rasicm. Get over it.

If you want to make a movie adaptation of Little Orphan Annie casting a little girl of color, then go right ahead.

But to cast a little girl of color as THE Little Orphan Annie? It's just... weird. Not hateful or spiteful or anything, but it is odd. People like me who know not just the musical and the movie but ALSO the COMIC are left scratching our heads. I doubt you'd see a modern Little Rascals movie cast with a little white kid as Buckwheat. Fictional characters are who they are, INCLUDING their race. We shouldn't try to rob them of it.

I can't believe all the negative comments on here regarding a little girl playing the part of Anne. That is why it is called "acting". The article did not say anything about it being an original version. Hello, did anyone she "The Wiz". It was an adaptation of the wizard of oz and guess who starred in it? A black lady named Dianna Ross played the role of Dorothy. So, don't get your panties in a bunch over something as trivial as a little black girl "playing" a role. It's not real, people! I've never been called a racist, nor would I ever accept being called one since I never PRE-judge someone based on their race, religion, or place of origin, HOWEVER, I can see how casting a black girl to play a white character can be upsetting because it seems this only goes one way. If perhaps they were to remake a movie based on Fat Albert, or Shaft, or any other black fictional charcater but instead had that role played by any other race, white, asian, etc, the black community would be in an uproar and Al Sharpton would be planning a march. To call someone racist for saying that they think a white fictional character should be played by a white person is actually more racist then anything else.

Ok, so then you're suggesting that she use make up like Robert did AND look white to play the role? Not to mention what you are referencing is a fictional character that was neither traditionally white OR black. The character was created with the sole purpose of Robert putting on make up to LOOK black, like the Waynes brothers did in White Chicks.

Amazing how so many adults lift themselves up by attacking a young child. If you don't want to go to that movie, then don't go. Shakespeare wrote female parts that were played by men. Dianna Ross played Dorothy in Wiz and Brandy played Cinderella. Both of those roles were originally written for "white" girls. Theater is for actors, and good actors can play a myriad of roles. Don't pre-judge the movie, Ms. Smith's performance, or her suitability for the role. The proof will be in the pudding once the film is made and released. At least she has gumption and parents who teach her to reach high.

wow, I shouldn't be shocked to read all of these racist comments but quite frankly I am. It is just beyond sad. All of you who are focusing on race really need to take a good look at yourself and your character. You obviously view the world through a very different lens. Why does someone playing the role of Anne have to have red hair? What if Annie had brown hair in the original, what would your excuse be then? And before you give the lame excuse of "her red hair is iconic" you can just save your breath. You are hiding behind the red hair as an excuse for your racism... plain and simple. Now I honeslty probably wouldn't even see this remake... they have already done a remake of this film and despitle the awesomeness that is Kathy Bates... they will never be able to recreate the magic of the original.

They should just leave this movie alone there is no need to remake Annie. Annie is a classic movie from the 80's and it should stay that way. You can't have Willow Smith playing Annie it's just not going to work. That's like saying; Johnny Deep playing the part of Malcom X? It wouldn't work and it would be ridiculous. Example: remeber when they tried to remake Wizard of Oz and called it the OZ? where did that go? no where. Because they are some movies that you dont remake. If they are going to remake Annie i would vote for Alyson Stoner to play Annie, but that is just my opinion. Willow is a bad choice for Annie

The fact that you have to produce the movie for your little monkies to be in, should be a clue. Here's another clue, how well did "The Afro-Karate Kid" do at the box office? Smith, here's your sign!

All you friggin crybabies yelling racism, please stop it. I'm a HUUUGE Will Smith fan from way back in the day and have always wished the royal Fresh Prince Family well, but this has got to stop. This is Hollywood feeding Hollywood at its finest. The last time I checked, the Karate Kid was a white kid from the suburbs, and Annie was a pale, freckle faced white girl w/ flaming red curly hair. Why do these producers and writers insist on rewriting roles to fit these 2 kids into? I'm sure there will plenty of work out there for them w/o having to reinvent parts for them. I'm going to rewrite Malcolm X starring Jim Carey. I'd also like to see Robin Williams playing MLK. Now that would be something....This is not racism, it's just nonsensical to cast these 2 black kids into classic white roles for the sake of being PC. Next black person that cries racism, I'm going to wet their lips and stick em to the wall....

What next? She stars as a daughter and Will as Tevye in Fiddle on the Roof?? I'm sure the Hollywood community would love an anglo-saxon take on The Wiz! "You stole it from us! Why are you making it with a white cast?" they'd say. Smith seems to not have the brain capacity to come up with his own logical films. This is idiotic. I've seen enough of this "PC"ing of Hollywood.

Do you honestly think Will Smith and his family give a crap about any of these black people on here defending them? The last black person Will Smith ever hung out with was Uncle Phil. The Smiths are so far removed from the black community, they lock their doors when they drive through the inner city. Trust me. Stop trying to identify w/ them as being blacks. They are not black. They are animated creations by the white man.

Honestly, it is ridiculous to see that so many people can sit here and say, after what our country has been through to give African Americans their own rights, that an innocent young girl should not do this movie. You are wrong, she has every right to do this if she wants to. Get a hold of yourselves people. She is just a young girl trying to make her mark in the world.

Why are those roles you mentioned reserved exlusively for white actors simply because they were originally done by white men? That is by far one of the most ignorant statements I have heard in a long time... and that is saying something considering the embarrassment of many of these posts. I will never understand the total lact of respect and outright hate that some people possess. Obviously you were raised by racists and taught to think like them. It is unfortunate that you will no doubt pass that hate on to your own children... I only hope that they can see past your ignorance and help shape a positive future for this country and not perpetuate the close mindedness many still spew from their mouths. ok ...Disney did a fantastic live action remake of Cinderella for TV with Brandi as Cinderella and an Asian as the prince...this was truly how the story could be reimagined if they wanted to. Unfortunately the character of ANNIE is a red head child....so not sure how they plan on fudging that.
And Disney also did a better remake of ANNIE for TV use a black actress for the secretary to Oliver Warbucks...and multi ethnic groups for the orphans...but ANNIE was still a red head.
West Side Story is Romeo and Juliet with a different setting. It would be nice if they got creative with the idea and only loosely used the concept of the Annie comics and their characters. Then I might consider it

It would be a terrible mistake to remake the show "Annie". I dont understand the concept of remaking shows that are magical the first time around. All they end up doing is destroying it the second time. As a parent I dont understand why you would push your kids into that pressure so early. Let them be kids. And on another note, Willow's one hit wonder, "Flip Your Hair" or whatever the name was just AWFUL!!! But, I think alot of young singers these days are terrible like Taylor Swift, Britney Spears, among others whom cant hit a note at all. The music just covers it up. I know I got off the track here. Why can't they prepare to be Drs, social workers or lawyers etc.? If I remember Will turned down a scholly to MIT to pursue his dream BUT why not let his kids be kids. Why does every entertainer's kids have to be entertainers (nepotism for the untalented) and she's on the label of a former drug dealer Jay Z? When Willow said "I got my singing talent from my mom" I fell out laughing because Jada CAN'T SING but when J Lo is the measuring stick then she can beat Celion, Whitney etc. hahaha Sadly I don't think these kids will turn out well but I'm praying. Will/Jada aren't living what they preach through their children...sad sad sad I refused to support them on Broadway when they teamed up with Jay Z...tired of the SAME OLD PPL!!!

Hmm. I could have sworn Annie had curly red hair.. and there was another characteristic that differs Annie from Willow that I just can't put my finger on... No to Willow as Annie. Do a casting call and let her deserve the spot, instead of having daddy and mommy do all the string pulling for her.

I don't have anything against the girl, I'm sure she's quite talented.... But, Hollywood, leave this movie alone. Please. I'm sick and tired of movies getting "remade". Movies that don't need to be remade in the first place. Come up with some new ideas, because Annie is a movie that should just be left alone. The lack of imagination in Hollywood is really sad.

You would think by now, that Will Smith should have figured out that remakes are not his cup of tea. First, he did Wild Wild West, that flopped BIG TIME. Then, he has his son remake the Karate Kid – which I refuse to see (Don't mess with my childhood). Now, he thinks a remake of Anne with his daughter needs to be made. Get over yourself Will.

I am not rascist because I have a african american adopted son...but the industry needs to stop doing that with movies. Some movies don't need to be change because of color. Just because you can doesn't mean you should. Don't do it. It is wrong. Come on...be realistic...can you just think of everyone else. They need to come up with something original. Hey, Robert Rodriguez did a very successful franchise with Spy Kids with not only Hispanic characters but mixed race family as well – they need to take a page out of his book and think original rather than rip off.

I do not blame Will Smith for the exploitation if his children.......I blame his wife.

Jada comes across as a scheming individual who only likes other people with the same skin colour that she has. I have seen her on Tv many times at awards shows – she only stands up when a fellow African American wins or sings.

When a Caucasion Icon is honoured she either sits or stands with an "I don't care about you" slouch – and never claps. She is rude and unmannerly...and she is using her children for her own purposes.

Gee an "Annie' remake, and for about five seconds I had the slightest hope that Hollywood found something new to create a film about. Willow Smith would look kind of funny in Red, curly hair, don't you think? I guess instead of coming up with a new and innovative film with her as the start Hollywood figures they'll make more money revisiting a classic story. But obviously this isn't the first time Will Smith's children were involved in a ridiculous remake of a movie that was made for white actors. Let us not forget about The Karate Kid. Because we all know how likely it is for a young black boy like Jaden Smith to be picked on by Chinese kids.

Well actually g, Annie was based on the comic strip Little Orphan Annie and she had red hair. But that was a cartoon, not a real person so sure the musical could be re-imagined to be a little black girl. I am a huge fan of Will Smith. Jada, not overly excited but shes ok, but the kids....... talented, yes, cute, absolutely, parented right........ who knows. They live in a different world than us, but seriously, Im a classic fan, remaking casablanca would be a sin, remaking the wizard of oz, perish the thought, how about gone with the wind? where is the line? And then, mind you, annie? Its a musical, its been done how many times? Is being black now just a new twist? I guess I just dont understand why hollywood cant seem to come up with something original for her to do. She does have talent, just not as much as her parents tell her. I guess its just getting a little out of hand. Maybe there should be a roots remake, cast all the slaves as white. Bet you would see the s#$% hit the fan. It would be so out of character that no one would even tune in. Or maybe they would watch just to see how bad it could be.

WIlliow is horrible! She was such a joke on the Ryan Seacrest (Dick Clark) News Years celebration. Her lip syncing was so bad I was laughing. She has zero talent as a singer and would never have anyone give her a second look if it were not for her Mother and Father being famous. If Hollywierd is planning to remake "Annie" I hope they at least find someone with talent.

Hollywood isn't remaking "annie" as the article says Will Smith is doing the remake himself just for Willow, there will be no casting call for the role.

It fascinates me that another classic movie (or in this case, movie-musical) is being remade when it doesn't need to be. First, Smith, Jr. takes on Karate Kid. Jackie Chan is no Pat Morita,. nor is Smith, Jr. a Daniel-Son. Secondly, the whole premise of little orphan Annie is a red-headed, curly haired orphan. How WIllow Smith is going to pull that off, well, they'll have to use Avatar-like special effects to make that happen. Please, Mr. Will Smith, stop messing with movies that just don't need a 'do-over.' If you need to re-make something, why not go after movies like RoboCop or bad 80's movies like Ice Pirates?

I always liked and respected WillS for being a hard working, self made man. Seems like he's allowing or pushing his daughter they opposite way. She should focus on school and other learning ways rather than trying to be a "star". The American public is fickle and has little patience for shallow prop ups. She should wait.

No one said anything about child actors until now. Nothing makes these kids so different. Why say that she needs to be quiet and read a book? And you've never seen her act so why say that she's no good or ever will be? You are pathetic. All of you are on this page. Your comments are so hurtful and I hope she is not reading any of these. Would you want someone to say things like this to your kids. Nevermind, you probably say things like this to them yourself. For you adults who are throwing tantrums about a child and lashing out across the internet, if you all had the money, you would be doing the same for your kids too. So stop with the childish comments. People, grow up! Whatever age this girl is, she has way more class than many of you.

For the record, I am white, and I think it is sad that this conversation has degraded into a racist tirade on both sides. But regardless of that, you cannot deny the facts. Casting is about believability, the viewers must believe that the actor or actress IS that character, this is what transports the viewer into the fantasy world the movie creates.

Color has nothing to do with it....unless color prevents the viewer from believing that any particular actor or actress IS their character. For instance, would you be fully swept up into the fantasy world of Uncle Tom's Cabin if they cast Kathy Bates as Harriett Tubman?? I don't think any of us would. What about Matt Damon as Martin Luther King, Jr. I think this is the point that some people are trying to make (minus the racist remarks). Sometimes it may work to replace a traditionally white role with a non-white. Just look at the BBC production "Merlin" and their lead Guinivere - it totally works. But sometimes, it doesn't work.

Orphan Annie IS a liittle white girl with curle red hair! So much so, that even little white girls with blond or brown hair have always had to don a wig and paint their face with freckles to play this part. That IS who Annie is.

What would happen if Martin Luther King was played by an asian? Still a visible minority.....

Just doesn't make sense that to cast an African American as a white red-head. Leave that to the Wayan brothers.

This should not be about race, this should be about a movie and the root of the story. Annie was a white red headed orphan. Period.

The best Cinderella I ever saw was ABC's version with Brandy as Cinderella and a very good cast that was hired because of talent, not color. Annie was also done with Audra Macdonald as the secretary to Victor Garber's Daddy Warbucks and they end up together at the end. Who cares what color someone is if they can sing, dance and act?

Last I checked, Harriet Tubman and Martin Luther King were real people. That's why it would be important to cast people who look like them.
Annie is FICTIONAL character. I think FICTION is free to any interpretation.

@Really- Although Cleopatra was the last Pharaoh of Egypt, she was actually of Greek descent, which is why she is often portrayed the way she is. She was part of a Greek family that ruled over Egypt.

Cleopatra was born in 69 B.C. in Alexandria, Egypt to Pharaoh Ptolemy XII Auletes and his wife Cleopatra V . Yes she was of a bi-racial stock. In America that makes her black.

PS. Most Greeks of that time were also of a bi-racial stock.

I see people both black and white showing their inner racist. And it's sad. Acting is about playing a part, to which any person can play. Regardless of race. Yes Annie was white with freckles, the biggest ginger on the planet, and the most famous. But the question is, in today's society. How many black women do you see in magazine, tv shows, etc. With Red hair... the answer is tons. Anyone can dye their hair it's not an issue. As far as freckles, anyone of any race can have that too. She just isn't white.

Actors over the years have tried several times to break the very same color barrier in part that some people here are trying to put back up. Will Smith himself has gotten traditional Roles that were meant for white actors. I think this is a progressive step. I'm sure people said the same things you guys are saying now about rogers and hammerstein Cinderella remake, which wasn't bad at all. An Asian prince charming is something that we would not have normally seen, but it worked. Even though his parents were black and white.

So stop playing the race game, it's dead and old. There is actually an mutilracial man in the white house which is something I thought i'd never live to see. So Grow up.

Nothing to do with black or white IMHO. However, time will tell if a black "Annie" will work out in this role. Who knows - it may be amazing or it may flop.

What is really bugs me is that that is no little girl. That is a made up product you're looking at right there. That little 10-year-old has as much makeup on a twenty-something out for a night on the town. Sad, sad, sad.

Willow or her brother evidently cannot get an acting job on merit so rich rich rich daddy has to buy or produce movies for his children to do. He doesn't seem to have a problems getting movie deals being black because he is a talented actor.
