'Idol' debut ratings down

The ratings are in for the first night of season 10 of "American Idol," and things aren't looking up.

TV By The Numbers reports that the initial night of the competition series was down 13 percent overall from last season's debut with an 18 percent drop in the coveted 18 -49 demographic.

In total, 26.1 million average viewers tuned in for the beginning of season 10 versus the 29.945 million who watched the premiere of season 9. That's more than the usual 10 to 15 percent drop in ratings the show has seen previously.

"American Idol" has seen a decrease in its ratings over the years since the all time high of the season finale in 2006.

all you people who refuse to watch this season, have you even tried to check it out? i stopped watching american idol regularly after the 3rd or 4th season, and i checked in every once in awhile int he seasons after. i decided to watch the premiere, just to see what it would be like, and i was more than pleastnaly surprised.

i must say, i LOVE jennifer lopez as a judge. her energy is amazing, and she brings a certain realness that paula or kara lacked, and i liked paula and thought kara was alright. i think she's going to bring a lot to the show. steven tyler is also starting to grow on me, although he does wail a tad too much. i can definitely see the chemistry building witht he new panel of judges, and i sincerely hope people give them a chance this season. as the saying goes, don't knock it til you try it.

No Paula and no Simon, means no need to watch. I stopped watching after they cut Paula.

Liked the new faces on the panel but miss Paula and Symon and their crazy antics even more! Are Richard and Jennifer permanent fixtures or just passing thru?

Steven Tyler is too repulsive to have to look at, so I won't be watching Idol anymore. It won't be any good without Simon
anyhow. It's on its way out.

I stopped really being a big fan of idol a few years back. The show was really beginning to be more about a look instead of talent. I watched last night and fell in love with the format and the new judges. I will definitely be watching to see how this season pans out.
