What's the verdict on 'Skins'?MTV’s anticipated new scripted series, “Skins,” premiered last night on the channel – after a nice new episode of “Jersey Shore,” no less – and although it’s been billed as dangerously edgy, critics aren’t so sure it’s living up to its promises. The series, based on the popular U.K. show of the same name, tells the by now familiar story of foul-mouthed high school teens who spend a lot of time seeking sex and drugs. But while the Brit version won hearts with its honest approach to the reality of being a teen, the jury’s still out on the U.S. import.
“‘Skins’ (a term for rolling papers) is about a group of blue-collar teens,” the New York Post explains in a review. “But what, in the original version, is a combination of laugh-out-loud funny and scary comes across here as ‘Gossip Girl’ on unemployment.” Strange, since critics point out that the first episode was awfully reminiscent of the original. The U.K.’s Guardian found the first half-hour to be “a shot-for-shot, beat-for-beat and practically word-for–word doppelganger of the Channel 4 pilot.” The language isn’t as strong, and the “determination to be shocking at all times is absent,” the Guardian notes, but for the most part, “it’s the same show.” Indeed, Time magazine's James Poniewozik cautions that where "Skins" may ultimately falter is in "finding its American voice." The Los Angeles Times, meanwhile, found "Skins" to be "nothing more than an R-rated teen soap minus any truly resonant characters," adding that the pilot isn't shocking as much as it's "ridiculous." “Not only do these kids have no homework or extracurricular activities (beyond the above mentioned), school is just a place to smoke and gossip and have occasional run-ins with teachers who are either moronic or mentally unbalanced," the Times' Mary McNamara says in a review. "The parents are no better, acting simply as convenient foils for the kids' angst, anger or narcissism...Subsequent episodes improve — there is small hope for Tea and much hope for Black-D'Elia as an actor — but sadly, not enough." The show didn't seem to win over Entertainment Weekly's Ken Tucker either. “Skins” is exactly what you’ve been told it would be, the critic says: “Teens drinking and drugging, staying out all night, fighting with their parents, trying to help a pal lose his virginity, going to z-z-z-z-z… oh, sorry — my head hit the keyboard while I was typing phrases familiar to describe so many ‘daring’ teen shows.” The critic adds that the show will likely “have a hard time distinguishing its ground-breaking rude-lewd-shamelessness from all the other rude-lewd-shameless shows on TV right now," and "may need a guest appearance by Snooki to add a little authentic crassness to the proceedings.” But perhaps the purported outlandish behavior of the characters was oversold – Time adds that once you get past the not-so-daring antics, there could be more to love. “For all its cheekiness and raunch, Skins has more sweetness than snarky teen soaps like ‘Gossip Girl,’” Poniewozik says. "This is the secret of this unsettling, flawed but ambitious show: it wears its heart on its skin." Did you catch the premiere? If so, what did you think? Will you keep watching? |

@ catherine calore well good thing ur discussed and not disgusted cause than some might actually care
Shame on the producers.....It is horrible show. Between Jersey shore and this I am discussed...
Letting these shows on TV starts to become the fire starter for more shows like this!!!! Mtv has to push every issue and they should just stop!!! Find smarter people to come up with better shows!!!! I hope this show TANKS and Mtv as well!!! GET RID OF MTV ALREADY!!!!
This version is of Skins is absolutely horrible.. its a very poor rip of off the Original Version... I mean they did the same thing to the best show on tv TOP GEAR!!! the history channel ripped it off and it sucks
My question to the people complaining about the crappy US version of the show, is have they *seen* the UK version? It's just the same, if not worse. For everyone that has seen the real Skins knew what they were getting into. Show what the UK version and have a good day!
If I see one more person say "The Uk version is better..."
I get it. I've been a fan since 07. I even loved season 4. But seriously calm down. It is possible to like both series. We haven't even seen it be its own show. Perhaps waiting for episode 2 to judge would be a better idea...
I feel like everyone likes to think Skins is their own show and now there's fear of everyone getting in on the secret. Uh oh you might like something popular!!!
So glad i removed MTV from my channel listing when they brought out Jersey Shore.
I gave this show a chance, I was like "alright... MTV is back to scripted shows, awesome" also I love the original UK version. Five minutes in I was cringing, from the terrible acting to the actors they picked... it was a disaster. I couldn't find ONE redeemable quality. I'll stick to watching other remakes like Shameless or Being Human, those at least are done WELL.
It was a very poor imitation of the original. It is nearly shot for shot and line for line, but the acting, setting, and timing are all sorts of off. It is the difference between a professional theatre company performing a shakespeare play vs. your local high school. Sure it is the same script, but the show is defined by the talent producing it. It is obvious that MTV's talent is sorely lacking.
I've always thought the real skins–the UK one–to be a remarkable show..not like the silly teenybopperish ones we have here (a la gossip girl, 90210, etc...) but..the second I heard MTV was adapting an American version, I knew how it would turn out. It's simply not possible to take a show that heavy, raw, and edgy and adapt it to a cable friendly American show. The MTV version is crap. If people want to see skins here-find the original series online. Better yet, have a network like HBO or Showtime pick up the original series. This version is an utter disappointment...not to mention, one of the best things about UK Skins has always been the superb casting-these American actors are ABOMINABLE for these roles.
I did not watch this show. I don't watch Jersey Shore (my husband does though). I am not opposed to kids watching things people say are influencing them in a negative way. That is because no matter how hard parents try their kids will watch what they want to watch and do what they want to do when they aren't around. It is our job as parents to teach our children what is right and wrong. Sheltering them from the realities of society isn't the way to go. If your kid want to watch this show, fine. Watch it with them, have a discussion before and after about the show and what these kids do on the show and that it's NOT REAL. I think that many kids today watch crap like Jersey Shore, The Hills, Gossip Girl, etc and think this IS life. Teach your children!!!! And for those of you who say MTV is crap, I agree. Maybe they need to change their name since MTV stands for Music TeleVision and they rarely play music anymore.......
Brittish verision is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better......the American verision is so forced!
Everything MTV does is shallow and pointless...just like the people who watch the shows and allow them to be continued. There wouldn't be this crap on TV unless there was a market for it.
The problem is there are too many N1ggers andJiggaboos on MTV. And now the U.S. is full teenage W1ggers trying to be dumb, ebonic speaking, fried chicken and watermelon eating, crack smoking, white womanRaping, lip flappingJiggaboos.
Pop! Pop!
I thought the show was awful and should not be on MTV for teenager to following the acts of these teenagers.
I agree 100% with tellitlikeitis! Many parents are not structuring their child's life for success. It's not about pleasing and giving whatever you child cries for. It's not even about money. It's about integrity & morals. If parents out here actually have class, their children will know the difference about lfe.
okay all this stuff bout reading and volunteering is dumb. Im 17 I volunteer twice a week at my local hospital, have a job, am on the basketball team at my school, have a 3.8 gpa and in a few months will be enlisting in the marine corps. Would it be a stretch to say that im kind of a parents dream? lol AND even I and all of my fellow honor society members like to have a drink when we can or two.. or 3.. maybe some shots... >.> lol my point being im pretty responsible with my life I dont smoke but know many honor kids who do and do worse than that. In the end its their lives they're going to do as they please stop critizining maybe you parents should have done something productive as well like raise your kids with values.
It's another misguided show with little redeeming value. Sure does not uplift society.
this show sucks. MTV has lost it's calling – and yes, I am pushing 50 but do remember when the channel was worth watching. And I remember doing plenty of drugs and drinking in my youth, so I've been there, done that – but not as it's portrayed on this piece of shi* show. Anyone who thinks this show is worth anything has to be between the ages of 15 and 23. Simply because they don't know any better.
MTV has sucked since it changed to N1gger TV...it should have more shows for people like me, a gay transgender pedophile.
If some of these parents weren't so caught up on what their kids are watching maybe they would see that there is already a deep seeded problem that has zero to do with tv. Stop letting the tv raise your d*mn kids. If you raised your kids right they would be able 2 watch bs like this and know that its wrong and know that kinda pressure isn't something they have 2 cave into. Raise your children to be strong minded & strong willed. Stop babying them up and let them know the realities of life. If you don't. When they get out in the world on they're own the will stand for nothing & fall for anything.
For a network who is airing shows like "teen mom", "I used to be fat", the Docu-series "If you knew me" etc, trying to push young adults, teens and younger teens into understand life and making choices that WILL change their life in one way or another seems like its missing its mark by airing a show like "SKINS." It just seems to be totally misleading as to what their network is trying to act like it stands for. I know what MTV is, was and always has been about, music at one point, but more so, pushing the envelope, it just seems like they were starting to take a powerful social stance and this negates a lot of that.
It's amazing how steamed the right-wing authoritarians are getting over this. The show sucked, but if it bursts anyone's shortages, conservative bubble, it's worth it.
We need to tell the pro-censorship crowd in the US to sit down and shut up.
A very poor remake of the UK version. The characters are just going through the motions and you do not have a feeling that it is real. The UK version sucked you in. You could identify with the characters.
Its a bunch of kids...how entertaining could it be? Although I wouldnt mind taking that strawberry red haired girl around the block a few times.
If a television network (or any teenager, for that matter) wanted to shock me, put together a show about teenagers who care about themselves and others, who see the value of trying to be the best they can be in something constructive, creative and positive. Showcase teens who want to make their communities better, who respect their parents and have a sincere desire to learn what the world has to offer in terms of art, science, literature, technology, spirituality and philosophy. Now THAT would be shocking enough to watch.
The only thing offensive about this show is the terrible writing/acting. You want to shock us, fine, but try a little harder to get it done.
US television programmers really need to stop trying to remake Brit shows, they got it right the first time, why do it over again? Between this and Syfy's version of Being Human, I'm sad for American television!
They must think ripping those shows off is easier & cheaper than coming up with their own good and original concept...
first the show is kinda whack second its intended for the older audience third everybody in this post is still going to continue watching skins just like jersey shore so quit your crying and negative comments and get back to work
Where are kids like this? I graduated three years ago, I sure as heck didn't do any of this, and even the "bad" kids were too stoned to do anything else BUT smoke their weed.
I mean, yeah, there was the one time we fit ten people into an Escalade and drove it into the ocean, but other than that...
Why did you do that? I find that hilarious. As long as you didn't KILL the people in the car of course.
For all the older generation who find this offensive, remember what your generation was doing in their teen years. Dazed and Confused was a pretty good representation of what it was like to be a teen in the 1970s. Ive heard that from my parents who said they didn't participate in those kind of activities (drugs, drinking, etc) but said it was very much there and happening.
MTV is not the parent, if you're worried about your 13-17 year olds watching this. don't subscribe to MTV, if it bothers you that much you as the parent you should be monitoring what your children watch & listen to. Last time I checked MTV is cable TV channel that you have to pay for, so don't like this... don't pay for it.
What makes the BBC Skins so good is the timing of the characters. Yes some of the stories why funny are to hard as plausible the characters drew you in. Like when the stud who helps his friends lose virginity gets run over by a car and almost dies. I felt that the pain and the humiliation the flip of roles. This version is just crap compared to the original. Just like Top gear that got brought over. They just don't bring the shows over right.
god parents chill OUT blocking its not gonna do much seeing as most kids can either get around that or watch it somewhere else. stop complaining you know its how things are drinkings fun n kids are gonna keep doing it as long as its avaliable... (itll always be avaliable lol) n drugs well those too gettt over it 😛 maybe you shoulda simply raised your kid to know better
The "M" stands for moronic and mainstream. I stop watching MTV when Beavis and Butthead went off, but even then MTV made kids look stupid. Look at my sweet 16. Very disgusting. If I would've talked to my parents like, I would been knock into the middle of next week.
Uk skins 1-3 is amazing check it out. (season 4, not too good)
Us skins, does not seem as edgy And well acted as the original, maybe it needs time.
Icant wait for the movie to come out too! I bet it will be about a girl with aids trying to warn the boy that gave it to her and the whole time everyone is just getting waisted and beating people with skateboards! Original idea by far!!! " Shhh girl, its ok, its just me casper". Lol
What happened to "Hard times of rj burger"?
awful, selling to lowest common denominator...and yes i blocked this show after watching if for 15 mins with my 9th grade daughter....its insulting and common....i am not opposed to watching an edgy show and find they can be a great way to have a good conversation with your kids while watching some edgier stuff, but this crap is just typical flash and a money grab for MTV. Speaking of MTV – it is nothing like it used to be, a total sellout for sure but remember that MTV is a huge global business -= they are ONLY about the money and have no real street cred..Living in the NYC area I know many people that have left working for the network because it was such a factory of hypocrisy and a lousy place to work
The british version in '07 was much better..... I love how MTV can rip off a show and call it "new"
If Skins is a representation of high schoolers today, there is a serious problem. I believe in teens finding who they are and being allowed to make mistakes, but I watched 5 minutes of this show and had to turn it off because of what garbage it was.
It's an embarrassment that teens today feel that because they are Gen Y kids that grew up with a cell phone at 5 it makes them mini adults. Your mental capacity still sucks FYI and your decision making is lacking. If TV shows allow you to escape reality, why not watch a fantasy movie or something? Or here's a thought READ A BOOK! I'm 24 and can't believe how ridiculous parent/child relationships are these days. Parents should really learn to parent, and teens need to learn some respect.
To OAG don't blame MTV and TV for your 16 year olds drug problems maybe you should have been more involved in her life and knew what she was doing and maybe that wouldn't have happened but don't blame MTV for your screw up
I liked the British version much better!!!
Just another crap show on MTV (M for Moron) that will probably be labeled a smash hit even though no one with half a brain watches it. But then, how else is Jersey Shore still on the air?
Heard good things about the UK version so I gave it a shot.
Yeah, not so great.
I want to like it so I tried again. But the acting is terrible. Nothing new, nothing special.
State of va you're sick game of a child in a grave then dig him up an lie about the horning the child an give a cop to fire at some thing running around in the box look how syced you're with you're game y rnt the legs straight out hi guieswell look at them ///
An the hole system is that flashy thing on a cop side an using it more often the perfict balince of trees an city in virginia cale to va like I sayed you're no firend an not my way of life so have fun guies
You can make up a hell of a story an way of life for some one just charge them with exsiv force an they can keep there way of life you know he's over the age of 18 an you're not my way of life or a friend of mine so caryon now with someones eals child a talk about how much fun it is bn god
That's not good when virginia doesn't understand its own state an does nothing but make them heros
What does the "M" in MTV stand for nowadays?
And this show had pretty great ratings. So if you are waiting for this show to get canceled soon, keep holding your breath.
I became a U.K. SKINS fan last year and watched ALL series on netflix, I was shocked at every episode I watched especially series (seasons) 3 & 4. I loved the show it even made me tear at times w/o me noticing until I'd feel a tear down my cheek, that's when you realize it's a good show. I think U.S. verision need it's own story line, the characters need more heart and be a little more comfortable in their roles. But, I know I can't wait to watch the SKINS movies, which is coming out this summer I believe 😀
Just another example of why "Hell is an Awfully Big City" Google it, to find out more.
I thought the show was good. MTV is just a network. If you dont like it dont watch it.END OF STORY! and if your daughter is in rehab that just proves your a bad parent and you shouldt blame television.
Im with ya Aubry!!!
Hollywood has an abysmal history of taking brilliant British shows and turning them into Americanized crap. And somebody thought MTV could pull it off???
After reading these comments I find that everyone hates the new show as well as MTV.But yet you watched it, commercials and all,and will probably tune in next week so they can comment on how much they hate skins again next week.
the previews for the show was so awful I didnt even bother watching. It portrays high school life to be filled with all these drug and beer filled parties which is unrealistic. Its sad when my 13 year old sister asks if thats what parties are really like because mtv thinks that this is the way to party and live your life
I think this show was interesting. Wake up people, kids in high school are doing a lot more then you think.. Doing drugs, drinking, sleeping around with each other.. Yea some parts were little to out there. But its about a group of friends who are committed to each other.. Come on people its young kids acting..cut them a break. I believe this show will open parents eyes and see what most american kids are doing. I come from a middle class town with a lot of money, one of the best high schools in nj. and the teens are doing pretty much everything, but on a lower level. And teens all over the US are experimenting young and young these days. And its sad, but the truth. I'm looking forward watching next week show of SKINS!! I think it will be a eye opener for teens . All you haters, you must be so blinded what teens are doing these days. Just smoke a joint and chill out!!!!!
PARENTS SHOULD KNOW THIS ANYWAY ITS BEEN HAPPENEING SINCE THE 70s!!!!!!! WE DONT NEED PROGRAMMING THE GLORIFY THE FACT THAT ITS COOL. its a fine line that shouldnt be crossed. it happens, let it be, ground your kids when you find the joint in their pocket and move on.
This is just like when US tried to do a version of BBC's show "Coupling". The American version sucked rocks and used the same script and story lines. Big fat FAIL.
i didn't even have to watch the show to figure out it was gonna suck. it's shows like these that give my generation a bad name. just a another reason i don't watch mtv anymore. bring back the days of beavis and butthead, daria, and celebrity deathmatch. mtv hasn't been good since they went off the air. i'll stick to watching tru tv.
Awful show with no show every time American networks try to redo other counties shows fail ugh expect for the office funny show I must say
Maybe MTV should go back to airing music videos like their name implies. They had so many great bands and fans loved it. But over time they started leaning toward reality TV like road rules and real world and cared less about the music. All they show now are lame shows like "Skins" and it's pure garbage. It's no wonder bands these days don't want to make music videos anymore because they don't want to associate themselves with a terrible network which has strayed from its original vision. They are nothing but sellouts who only care about what High School kids find interesting. Screw you MTV!
PARENTS, PLEASE LOVE YOUR CHILDREN AND BE SELECTIVE IN WHAT YOU
ALLOW THEM TO WATCH AT HOME.
well idk bout being good or whatever but im a teen n kan tell all you parents commentin on this– its a pretty accurate picture of almost every hs. kids lives ha sorry to break it to you all.
The US adaption was horrible. 1st of all you can't compare 16/17 yr old American and British teens. In England you are out of HS and considered an adult in your A levels (college classes) . How they thought this show would cross the pond without making the American version about college age kids makes no sense. Not to mention the UK version could be a lot more uncensored while still holding substance and not causing controversy because of the ridiculous censorship Americans have.
This show sounds like a more R-rated version of Degrassi ( a show that is actually worth watching)
Wow if stuff happens in the UK like what was portrayed on the show...I WANT TO GO ON VACAY THERE FOR A WEEK!!! WOO YEA lol jk
From the constantly replayed previews, I honestly thought it was going to be cheesy and overdone, but I couldn't help but to be intrigued. It was QUITE unrealistic to U.S standards but who cares?!?! Isn't that why we watch tv sometimes..??..to get away from the real world and have a gasp or a laugh??
And booboo this is the u.s, what else isn't stolen? I thank the UK for creating a show/movie like this so that the u.s. could rob another country of something to let it's citizens indulge in. I'll even look up the UK version when I get a chance.
With all that said I'll continue to watch...:)
I didnt find the show appealing. also i feel the parents who made negative comments towards mtv as a network should stop blaming or targeting them for what your children decide to watch. do your job as a parent and set some boundaries and limits.
I agree!
So this is the point in which society gotten too...when young kids have no morals, applauded for acting horribly and what's worse is that is dubbed entertainment...23 years old and I don't want people to think we all act like this....I didn't even have to watch the show and just saw the commercial and I knew it was just another bad representation.of my generation,.
Thank you MTV, for supplying the countries' pedofiles with yet another cable tv show to fap to. Fu***n' idiots. And yes, the M in MTV should be dropped completely. Background music doesn't count as actual music.
Remember back in the day when MTV was actually fun and trendy and showed music videos?
Now it's crappy TV shows that do nothing but insult the intelligence.
Besides the fact that the show is way to flashy, it's just crap. I'd rather watch cops.
Agreed.
MTV is clearly pushing any programming that converts as many young people into losers as possible. They know some kids who watch tv will emulate the Dooshes simply because said Doosh is on tv and therefore "cool". Not sure what made MTV stop playing music. Maybe the music videos were too tame for the MTV producers? The only reason people should watch MTV is for it's comedic value.

This show is completely and totally unrealistic, I find it offensive and repulsive. Being a Teen myself I find it to be a misrepresentation for the most part of what today's teens go though. I'm not happy about the example its setting and hope is canceled ASAP in the interest of Public Safety and Morality
And they can watch all the "skins" they want!
Yeah, go away where all the other F***ed up people are stupid liberals
The British are some of the most entertaining people on earth, and have given us such great things ( like the chance to declare our independence and beat them at their own game). To call the what you did drives me insane. If I didn't know better I'd say you were French, French Canadian, or just don't know who our allies are.
Not saying I don't love the French or Quebec, but they are a culture that can REALLY hold a grudge.
I vote liberals move to England!!
I can't wait for this completely shallow and moronic show to get cancelled. I do like a lot of the shows that MTV airs but "Skins" was an EPIC FAIL!!!!! It's exactly like Degrassi just a little more inappropriate. And I'm so sick of seeing the damn commercials for it!!!! Get it together MTV.
I'm very confused. Adults are appalled by the great change that has swept over the youth of US of A, yet it is the same hypocritical group of adults who are satisfied with their children watching such stupid shows. Don't be shocked when your kids end up in jail for their "skins." Completely idiotic.
Hell no that show is stupid above all ide rather barnie dan dat ish they gotta take it off da air no point on having it on....MTV yall r stupid n juz dont get it
The only show that I would ever watch that was adapted from the uk is the office. Not trash!
The UK version felt more real, you love the characters. This one felt empty in comparison. What has me angry is now it looks like BBCA won't be showing the 4th season of the UK skins , for that matter Being Human has been ripped off by the Syfy channel . Two great shows from the UK that I will truly miss on BBCA. Thanks MTV!
The british version is a million times better.
Yes this version may suck but not because of its subject matter but because of its lack luster attempt at originality. To knock the concept of skins you must MUST watch the UK version the first two seasons and even the rest but it was an amazing and truly engaging and endearing soap. Plus it is like sooo safe.
British teens and American teens are totally different.
We can't get away with doing what they do in their society.
It seems utterly ridiculous here, and makes
perfect sense there.
just in that fact alone you can tell the tone of the two countries
UK: Liberal, accepting, diverse
US: Conservative, tolerant, assimilation
I;ll stick to the U.K. version
I totally agree with you on this and as a father of eleven (11) beautiful children , I don't wanted them to think this is the right thing to do once they leave home for college . MTV ! please , please end it and never give another trial .
Yes I also saw this show 15 years ago (in reference to the movie Kids). Rent that movie and don't waste your time with this show.
I remember when MTV showed cutting edge music videos and live performances. I guess that shows my age, and therefore, no longer in MTV's demographic.
I have to say this show was confusing and all over the place and sterotypical but at the same time was so un realistic i did watch the premire
Another pointless show promoting reckless and destructive behavior to young kids...
Its a shame shows have to be shocking and raunchy to be considered entertainment.
The human race is on a swift path to its own suicide...
Found it to be dull. I didn't get drawn in like I thought I would. Wasn't as "shocking" as they made it out to be.
Bad acting, lame characters and boring plot. This was an exact replica of the British version except it lacked everything this show stood for! British teens live their lives differently than Americans. The things acceptable in the UK are not acceptable in American. You can see that by watching any other show on British television. Not to mention if you have seen the original version of this show, you knew exactly what was going to happen and how. Sure they have a lesbian instead of a gay character but they aren't even attractive enough that you would want to see them hooking up. Why doesn't MTV just play the original version and save themselves the trouble.
we cant play the original, PTC and FRC ppl will want it banned.
and even if it wasn't it would be played late late night (oh say within the 12AM-5AM time slot) and all the cursing and partial nudity bleeped and blurred out. thus rendered with mtv skins with half the screen blurred out. sorry we cant do it justice cause of the aforementioned ppl types
-some jamaican-guyanese american guy (who ended up in the unlucky third: 1/3 in canada :D, 1/3 in the uk :D, 1/3 in america T-T
I thought it was hilarious.if you don't relate its probably because you live a boring life, that and you are lame in the sack.
Agreed. Its inappropriate but parents should regulate what their children can watch. Great show and I'll continue to watch
I remember when MTV had original thoughts. Pathetic end to a once-proud station. So pathetic my teenage child won't watch it.
Another pointless show that shows the true ignorance of our youth
So im only 14 and i do watch mtvfor example jersey shore is my favorite and even i find "skins" so so so dumb it is so unrealistic and the commercials annoy me cant wait till it gets canceled
I am the mother of a 14 year old, and he feels exactly the same way (and I am SOOOO sick of the fricking commercials for it). I just don't get who this show is supposed to be targeting. I wish it would hurry up and go away.
"so so so dumb it is so unrealistic "
Opposed to Jersey Shore? I'm probably about the same age as your parents, and since they don't say anything to you I will. Why is Jersey Shore your favorite? Is it because it takes a bunch of stereotypes and perpetuates them? Is it because it's teaching you that you can be wealthy and famous for doing absolutely nothing?
At your age it's time to get off your ass and do something productive. Why don't you tell your parents you would like to volunteer or something? How can you contribute to society, besides following in the steps of Teen Moms and getting pregnant. I have a niece that is 14 and she hates these shows and has never watched them. She also knows how to write a sentence with proper spelling and punctuation. You can not. So stop watching that shyte, get off the computer, and read a book. Then work on how to spell. Parents are so worthless these days, and yours seem to be likewise.
Dear Dee,
Please see my post. Why can't you control what your child is watching? He/she is still a child. Pathetic. I'm so tired of my generation breeding lazy kids that can't think for themselves, nor can the parents.
MTV is a station of hypocrites because they air those "above-the-influence" anti-drug ads and "teen pregnancy is 100% preventable" stuff and then turn around and air shows that glorify exactly the behavior they purport to be against.
Agreed
Agree
i watched the show, and did not like it at all.. why does mtv and other channels think it is okay to have shows like this on when they know kids younger then 17 are watchoing..
No American version can be as good as the UK version. Skins is an awesomely awesome show. I will not be tuning in to the MTV version
Yea. This show reminds me of the old MTV show Undressed. Except worse.
As a parent of a sixteen YEar old daughter who has tried very hard to live this type of lifestyle, put herself through hell on Earth, and is now in rehab, I find this disgusting. I did not think I could dislike MTV more than I already do, but once again they have proved me wrong. RIP music television. MTV may you rot away.. Please.
Agree!!
I agree..
I think it's a terrible show that is
Completely unrealistic and inappropriate for
Kids. Another fine job by MTV when are we going to shut this station down?
you sound like a rep for the Parent Television Council or the Family Research Council.
granted it is no wear as good as the original, the basic elements of teen life are made clear
for some reason I pitch you as some one who was a teenager when carter was president
its a bad show, and a bad network but neither unrealistic or inappropriate. america is so protectionist towards their kids that we are easily some of the most sheltered children of the developed world. lighten up, in any case im pretty sure the show is not pitched toward your age demographic anyway.
Sodom and gormorah at it's best
I am a die hard fan of the UK version... so when I saw the first signs of a possible USA version, I was excited. Having only now seen "extended" commercials for the USA version, I was disappointed to see that they seemed verbatim to the UK version. Maybe MTV would have something here if they came up with their own original story line, but of course – that doesn't happen. Ever. Blah.
The original skins made me cry you loved the characters so much. This just feels empty and shallow. Like most usa shows.
Don't even bother watching it! Stick with the UK version. This version is absolute garbage. The chick that plays "Katy" which is supposed to be "Cassie" is so ridiculous. The reason I liked the UK version was because it was so believable. I am seriously questioning the casting and direction on this....
This is all par for the course ... I am not even going to bother to watch the US "Being Human" (what is the point of these remakes anyway???)
THE ELNGLAND VERSION WAS BETTER
Learn to spell before you comment.
Just what we need, another show about irresponsible young adults to show that nobody has to do anything and life.
I watched it, but I didn't care for it. The characters were not very real or endearing. I also thought the writing was not very well done. I will give it another shot, but this show is not looking good. BTW, I am 23 years old, so I should be able to relate to this, but somehow was not pulled in.
Well it's the same writing as the UK version and that was a big hit. It's just an US adaptation of it that went wrong, like most US adaptations...

I thought this show was interesting 15 years ago, but it was a movie called Kids.
Recycling, awesome.
EXACTLY.......
That movie was awesome also way better than the show skins.
Took the words right out of my mouth. Saw the first five minutes of the "Skins" premier and realized that I had seen the subject matter portrayed ten times more effectively in "Kids".
Totally on the money, Dude.
The American version of this show is just tragic...is feels deeply inauthentic, a poorly translated version of a groundbreaking show that was both very funny and very real. Rather than come up with an American version that has the same sensibility (different characters/situations, but the same issues) what has emerged is a semi-slavish copy that feels...well, non-American. There are American voices and American actors (mostly forget-able, with one or two exceptions), but the "characters" are cheesy copies of the originals...whole thing feels and sounds like a cheap re-make of a classic.
It IS possible for British shows to cross the Atlantic and be successful...look at The Office. Still the same sensibility as the original, but perfect in tone for an American audience.
