What's the verdict on 'Skins'?

MTV’s anticipated new scripted series, “Skins,” premiered last night on the channel – after a nice new episode of “Jersey Shore,” no less – and although it’s been billed as dangerously edgy, critics aren’t so sure it’s living up to its promises.

The series, based on the popular U.K. show of the same name, tells the by now familiar story of foul-mouthed high school teens who spend a lot of time seeking sex and drugs.

But while the Brit version won hearts with its honest approach to the reality of being a teen, the jury’s still out on the U.S. import.

“‘Skins’ (a term for rolling papers) is about a group of blue-collar teens,” the New York Post explains in a review. “But what, in the original version, is a combination of laugh-out-loud funny and scary comes across here as ‘Gossip Girl’ on unemployment.”

Strange, since critics point out that the first episode was awfully reminiscent of the original. The U.K.’s Guardian found the first half-hour to be “a shot-for-shot, beat-for-beat and practically word-for–word doppelganger of the Channel 4 pilot.” The language isn’t as strong, and the “determination to be shocking at all times is absent,” the Guardian notes, but for the most part, “it’s the same show.” Indeed, Time magazine's James Poniewozik cautions that where "Skins" may ultimately falter is in "finding its American voice."

The Los Angeles Times, meanwhile, found "Skins" to be "nothing more than an R-rated teen soap minus any truly resonant characters," adding that the pilot isn't shocking as much as it's "ridiculous."

“Not only do these kids have no homework or extracurricular activities (beyond the above mentioned), school is just a place to smoke and gossip and have occasional run-ins with teachers who are either moronic or mentally unbalanced," the Times' Mary McNamara says in a review. "The parents are no better, acting simply as convenient foils for the kids' angst, anger or narcissism...Subsequent episodes improve — there is small hope for Tea and much hope for Black-D'Elia as an actor — but sadly, not enough."

The show didn't seem to win over Entertainment Weekly's Ken Tucker either.

“Skins” is exactly what you’ve been told it would be, the critic says: “Teens drinking and drugging, staying out all night, fighting with their parents, trying to help a pal lose his virginity, going to z-z-z-z-z… oh, sorry — my head hit the keyboard while I was typing phrases familiar to describe so many ‘daring’ teen shows.”

The critic adds that the show will likely “have a hard time distinguishing its ground-breaking rude-lewd-shamelessness from all the other rude-lewd-shameless shows on TV right now," and "may need a guest appearance by Snooki to add a little authentic crassness to the proceedings.”

But perhaps the purported outlandish behavior of the characters was oversold – Time adds that once you get past the not-so-daring antics, there could be more to love.

“For all its cheekiness and raunch, Skins has more sweetness than snarky teen soaps like ‘Gossip Girl,’” Poniewozik says. "This is the secret of this unsettling, flawed but ambitious show: it wears its heart on its skin."

Did you catch the premiere? If so, what did you think? Will you keep watching?

My question to the people complaining about the crappy US version of the show, is have they *seen* the UK version? It's just the same, if not worse. For everyone that has seen the real Skins knew what they were getting into. Show what the UK version and have a good day!

If I see one more person say "The Uk version is better..."

I get it. I've been a fan since 07. I even loved season 4. But seriously calm down. It is possible to like both series. We haven't even seen it be its own show. Perhaps waiting for episode 2 to judge would be a better idea...

I feel like everyone likes to think Skins is their own show and now there's fear of everyone getting in on the secret. Uh oh you might like something popular!!!

I gave this show a chance, I was like "alright... MTV is back to scripted shows, awesome" also I love the original UK version. Five minutes in I was cringing, from the terrible acting to the actors they picked... it was a disaster. I couldn't find ONE redeemable quality. I'll stick to watching other remakes like Shameless or Being Human, those at least are done WELL.

It was a very poor imitation of the original. It is nearly shot for shot and line for line, but the acting, setting, and timing are all sorts of off. It is the difference between a professional theatre company performing a shakespeare play vs. your local high school. Sure it is the same script, but the show is defined by the talent producing it. It is obvious that MTV's talent is sorely lacking.

I've always thought the real skins–the UK one–to be a remarkable show..not like the silly teenybopperish ones we have here (a la gossip girl, 90210, etc...) but..the second I heard MTV was adapting an American version, I knew how it would turn out. It's simply not possible to take a show that heavy, raw, and edgy and adapt it to a cable friendly American show. The MTV version is crap. If people want to see skins here-find the original series online. Better yet, have a network like HBO or Showtime pick up the original series. This version is an utter disappointment...not to mention, one of the best things about UK Skins has always been the superb casting-these American actors are ABOMINABLE for these roles.

I did not watch this show. I don't watch Jersey Shore (my husband does though). I am not opposed to kids watching things people say are influencing them in a negative way. That is because no matter how hard parents try their kids will watch what they want to watch and do what they want to do when they aren't around. It is our job as parents to teach our children what is right and wrong. Sheltering them from the realities of society isn't the way to go. If your kid want to watch this show, fine. Watch it with them, have a discussion before and after about the show and what these kids do on the show and that it's NOT REAL. I think that many kids today watch crap like Jersey Shore, The Hills, Gossip Girl, etc and think this IS life. Teach your children!!!! And for those of you who say MTV is crap, I agree. Maybe they need to change their name since MTV stands for Music TeleVision and they rarely play music anymore.......

I agree 100% with tellitlikeitis! Many parents are not structuring their child's life for success. It's not about pleasing and giving whatever you child cries for. It's not even about money. It's about integrity & morals. If parents out here actually have class, their children will know the difference about lfe.

Would it be a stretch to say that im kind of a parents dream? lol AND even I and all of my fellow honor society members like to have a drink when we can or two.. or 3.. maybe some shots... >.> lol my point being im pretty responsible with my life I dont smoke but know many honor kids who do and do worse than that. In the end its their lives they're going to do as they please stop critizining maybe you parents should have done something productive as well like raise your kids with values.

And I remember doing plenty of drugs and drinking in my youth, so I've been there, done that – but not as it's portrayed on this piece of shi* show. Anyone who thinks this show is worth anything has to be between the ages of 15 and 23. Simply because they don't know any better.

If some of these parents weren't so caught up on what their kids are watching maybe they would see that there is already a deep seeded problem that has zero to do with tv. Stop letting the tv raise your d*mn kids. If you raised your kids right they would be able 2 watch bs like this and know that its wrong and know that kinda pressure isn't something they have 2 cave into. Raise your children to be strong minded & strong willed. Stop babying them up and let them know the realities of life. If you don't. When they get out in the world on they're own the will stand for nothing & fall for anything.

For a network who is airing shows like "teen mom", "I used to be fat", the Docu-series "If you knew me" etc, trying to push young adults, teens and younger teens into understand life and making choices that WILL change their life in one way or another seems like its missing its mark by airing a show like "SKINS." It just seems to be totally misleading as to what their network is trying to act like it stands for. I know what MTV is, was and always has been about, music at one point, but more so, pushing the envelope, it just seems like they were starting to take a powerful social stance and this negates a lot of that.

If a television network (or any teenager, for that matter) wanted to shock me, put together a show about teenagers who care about themselves and others, who see the value of trying to be the best they can be in something constructive, creative and positive. Showcase teens who want to make their communities better, who respect their parents and have a sincere desire to learn what the world has to offer in terms of art, science, literature, technology, spirituality and philosophy. Now THAT would be shocking enough to watch.

For all the older generation who find this offensive, remember what your generation was doing in their teen years. Dazed and Confused was a pretty good representation of what it was like to be a teen in the 1970s. Ive heard that from my parents who said they didn't participate in those kind of activities (drugs, drinking, etc) but said it was very much there and happening.

What makes the BBC Skins so good is the timing of the characters. Yes some of the stories why funny are to hard as plausible the characters drew you in. Like when the stud who helps his friends lose virginity gets run over by a car and almost dies. I felt that the pain and the humiliation the flip of roles. This version is just crap compared to the original. Just like Top gear that got brought over. They just don't bring the shows over right.

If Skins is a representation of high schoolers today, there is a serious problem. I believe in teens finding who they are and being allowed to make mistakes, but I watched 5 minutes of this show and had to turn it off because of what garbage it was.
It's an embarrassment that teens today feel that because they are Gen Y kids that grew up with a cell phone at 5 it makes them mini adults. Your mental capacity still sucks FYI and your decision making is lacking. If TV shows allow you to escape reality, why not watch a fantasy movie or something? Or here's a thought READ A BOOK! I'm 24 and can't believe how ridiculous parent/child relationships are these days. Parents should really learn to parent, and teens need to learn some respect.

Yea some parts were little to out there. But its about a group of friends who are committed to each other.. Come on people its young kids acting..cut them a break. I believe this show will open parents eyes and see what most american kids are doing. I come from a middle class town with a lot of money, one of the best high schools in nj. and the teens are doing pretty much everything, but on a lower level. And teens all over the US are experimenting young and young these days. And its sad, but the truth. I'm looking forward watching next week show of SKINS!! I think it will be a eye opener for teens . Maybe MTV should go back to airing music videos like their name implies. They had so many great bands and fans loved it. But over time they started leaning toward reality TV like road rules and real world and cared less about the music. All they show now are lame shows like "Skins" and it's pure garbage. It's no wonder bands these days don't want to make music videos anymore because they don't want to associate themselves with a terrible network which has strayed from its original vision. The US adaption was horrible. 1st of all you can't compare 16/17 yr old American and British teens. In England you are out of HS and considered an adult in your A levels (college classes) . How they thought this show would cross the pond without making the American version about college age kids makes no sense. Not to mention the UK version could be a lot more uncensored while still holding substance and not causing controversy because of the ridiculous censorship Americans have.

Wow if stuff happens in the UK like what was portrayed on the show...I WANT TO GO ON VACAY THERE FOR A WEEK!!! WOO YEA lol jk

From the constantly replayed previews, I honestly thought it was going to be cheesy and overdone, but I couldn't help but to be intrigued. It was QUITE unrealistic to U.S standards but who cares?!?! Isn't that why we watch tv sometimes..??..to get away from the real world and have a gasp or a laugh??

And booboo this is the u.s, what else isn't stolen? I thank the UK for creating a show/movie like this so that the u.s. could rob another country of something to let it's citizens indulge in. I'll even look up the UK version when I get a chance.

With all that said I'll continue to watch...:)

MTV is clearly pushing any programming that converts as many young people into losers as possible. They know some kids who watch tv will emulate the Dooshes simply because said Doosh is on tv and therefore "cool". Not sure what made MTV stop playing music. Maybe the music videos were too tame for the MTV producers? The only reason people should watch MTV is for it's comedic value.

The British are some of the most entertaining people on earth, and have given us such great things ( like the chance to declare our independence and beat them at their own game). To call the what you did drives me insane. If I didn't know better I'd say you were French, French Canadian, or just don't know who our allies are.

Bad acting, lame characters and boring plot. This was an exact replica of the British version except it lacked everything this show stood for! British teens live their lives differently than Americans. The things acceptable in the UK are not acceptable in American. You can see that by watching any other show on British television. Not to mention if you have seen the original version of this show, you knew exactly what was going to happen and how. Sure they have a lesbian instead of a gay character but they aren't even attractive enough that you would want to see them hooking up. Why doesn't MTV just play the original version and save themselves the trouble.

"so so so dumb it is so unrealistic "

Opposed to Jersey Shore? I'm probably about the same age as your parents, and since they don't say anything to you I will. Why is Jersey Shore your favorite? Is it because it takes a bunch of stereotypes and perpetuates them? Is it because it's teaching you that you can be wealthy and famous for doing absolutely nothing?

At your age it's time to get off your ass and do something productive. Why don't you tell your parents you would like to volunteer or something? How can you contribute to society, besides following in the steps of Teen Moms and getting pregnant. I have a niece that is 14 and she hates these shows and has never watched them. She also knows how to write a sentence with proper spelling and punctuation. You can not. So stop watching that shyte, get off the computer, and read a book. Then work on how to spell. Parents are so worthless these days, and yours seem to be likewise.

The American version of this show is just tragic...is feels deeply inauthentic, a poorly translated version of a groundbreaking show that was both very funny and very real. Rather than come up with an American version that has the same sensibility (different characters/situations, but the same issues) what has emerged is a semi-slavish copy that feels...well, non-American. There are American voices and American actors (mostly forget-able, with one or two exceptions), but the "characters" are cheesy copies of the originals...whole thing feels and sounds like a cheap re-make of a classic.

It IS possible for British shows to cross the Atlantic and be successful...look at The Office. Still the same sensibility as the original, but perfect in tone for an American audience.
