Oprah Winfrey Network to air 'Becoming Chaz'OWN's got you, babe! Oprah Winfrey's cable network is planning to air "Becoming Chaz," a documentary about the transformation of Cher and Sonny Bono's daughter Chastity into their son Chaz, Deadline.com reports. Prior to its TV broadcast, the film will make its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 23.
According to Sundance's description of the movie: "Chaz Bono was a male trapped in a female shell for as long as he can remember. Growing up as Sonny and Cher’s adorable golden-haired daughter in a body he felt wasn’t his own was a crucible it took years to transcend. Now, as he undertakes gender reassignment, he’s bravely decided to share the process on camera. "Becoming Chaz invites us along on Chaz’s remarkable journey of transformation. As hormone shots give way to top surgery, down-to-earth, unflappable Chaz beams with a sense of liberation and goes public with his story to put a face on a misunderstood issue. Meanwhile, his gregarious girlfriend grapples with the realities of suddenly living with a man, and it’s clear sex change isn’t solely a physical transition." The movie aims to "reveal the humanity and courage it takes for Chaz to ultimately embrace his true self," Sundance's description continued. "His moving struggle will reverberate profoundly for anyone to whom authenticity matters." An air date for "Becoming Chaz" has not yet been announced.

It is well known that Oprah does not have the highest moral values...certainly with her pro-gay, pro-choice, new-age agenda. And she's very anti-Catholic (or she wouldn't broadcast shows that are in direct conflict to the Church's teachings). Unfortunately, I'm forced to have this channel, but not forced to watch any programming. (Of those of you who miss Discovery Health, FIT TV has taken over the lineup).
What gets me, even though I am against transgender, is that when done properly guys look better than REAL females!!!

I would recommend the book The Wise Heart to everyone posting here. After a lifetime in the Christian church, reading this book changed my life. Now I live in peace daily and truly appreciate life and those around me. Many blessings to all of you.

I agree it may be important to depict the bravery needed to make such a decision but as someone else said, what about the health repercussions of changing your bodies "natural" balance. This isn't about nature vs nurture and "god making mistakes" as someone else said. If didn't make mistakes that a person wouldn't feel so out of place in their own skin. People will watch this for the wrong reasons...to tease, out of curiosity. Some will be for courage and support but they will be the minority. I don't find reality tv entertaining. I think this is more about publicity. I support anyone's decision to change, you have that right to make that choice and bless you for having the courage to make that you. But are you making it public for the right reasons...?

I admit I don't understand how someone could come to such an irreversible decision as to change genders; however, it must have been more painful for her to remain a woman than to go through that much to get it reversed. She no doubt had access to the best doctors and most intense care throughout it all. Not many would have this level of care, so I'm not sure it's appropriate to spotlight it on an "Oprah" show. Then again, I have to wonder why Chaz would want to put it into a movie format to show at Sundance!

There is so much unnatural stuff in this world like using steroids and cigarettes and alcohol and all sorts of drugs like heroin and fertility drugs and botox and implants and half the chemicals you can find in your everday products like detergent and shampoo and even baby wipes and diapers to name a few not too mention metal children's jewelry with lead in it and paints etc. Etc. Whenever I read stories like this I'm angry that there isn't more written about the affects of injecting massive amounts of hormones into your body to become more like the gender that is unnatural. It's extremely dangerous, has a lot of unwanted side affects and it cuts your life short. Whether you think whether this is right or wrong is not the point, but I think it's irresponsible journalism to carry on about how brave Chaz is, how wonderful this is, implicitly encouraging others to follow in his footsteps without spending enough time on the fact that he may be cutting his like short, and that there are a lot of terrible side affects.
And so you've just proved the point, no one would go through this unless it is an very intense issue. He is obviousy more comfortable as the man he is then the female he was born as. Some people will find this to be an interesting and educating film. Others will dwell in their hatred and ignorance of other people and issues that aren't popular. Imagine yourself in the opposite gender body. Of course you either can't or won't as it's easier to judge than it is to try to understand.
I have a friend going through this as well. He is becoming a she after 20 yrs in the military. "She" was married, had a family and was never happy and constantly got in trouble both professionally as well as personally until her journey of self-acknowledgement allowed her to see what the true issues were in her life. Chief among them was being a woman stuck in the wrong body. She never identified herself with men or did "man" things. Now, she's on one of the most difficult journeys that a person can take in reconciling who she is inside with her outward appearance. But she is also happier than I have ever seen her even though her life is much harder now. The transformation reconciles who they are inside with what the rest of us see outside. That's a difficult process not just for her but also for her family and friends. But it has also been a very liberating process for her as well. So before all the haters go bananas on this story, consider how you'd feel if it were you or your child in this position.

I think this is extremely courageous of Chaz to do. There continues to be so much hatred for those who are different and being gay is not someting that othees should judge. I do admit that this transition that Chaz has chosen to take is ..... wow very severe, permanent. I only hope that he will be completely happy, and he must be for all of the effort that he has gone through.
Being gay and being transgender are two entirely different things.
Chaz is sharing his story in hopes of gaining understanding not only for himself but for others in this situation. Similar shows have been broadcast over the past few years.
