James Franco: 'Maybe I'm gay'He's played gay men in the movies "Milk," "Howl" and the upcoming "The Broken Tower," so it's not unexpected that there is constant speculation about James Franco's sexuality. “It’s funny because the way that kind of stuff is talked about on blogs is so black-and-white,” Franco, who is dating actress Ahna O'Reilly, tells Entertainment Weekly. “It’s all cut-and-dry identity politics. ‘Is he straight or is he gay?’ Or, ‘This is your third gay movie — come out already!’ And all based on, gay or straight, based on the idea that your object of affection decides your sexuality.”
The 32-year-old "127 Hours" star – who is also planning a biopic about gay "Rebel Without a Cause" actor Sal Mineo — says the reason he has played so many homosexual characters is simple: They are great roles. "There are lots of other reasons to be interested in gay characters than wanting myself to go out and have sex with guys,” he explains. “I mean, I’ve played a gay man who’s living in the '60s and '70s, a gay man who we depicted in the '50s, and one being in the '20s. And those were all periods when to be gay, at least being gay in public, was much more difficult. Part of what I’m interested in is how these people who were living anti-normative lifestyles contended with opposition." But Franco teases that he also might have another motive: "You know what, maybe I’m just gay.”

James Franco is great eye candy – heck he's very cute – but what this does underscore is that somehow the good looking, even "butch" gay men out there can't somehow play gay parts. That's very sad. What if only black actors played "white" parts (parts where the people were obviously historical figures who were Caucasian)? What if we were back in "Merry 'Ole England" where women couldn't act? Men played women in drag! It's absurd somehow that James Franco deals with the gay moniker because we should encourage actors who are gay to play gay parts, not have straight actors playing the parts because they're challenging.

Seriously, you guys... you're taking this "maybe I'm gay" thing a little too seriously. He's not gay. If you take an objective look at his career, it's clear this man just loves the art of acting. He says he picks good characters and it seems like he likes the "internal conflict" of gay characters. This man has had a string of decent movies, yet unlike a lot of these top actors we see these days, has made some interesting career choices. He went and did a stint on General Hospital a year or two ago, went back to UCLA to study- it's clear this guy just loves what he does, wants to be top-notch and isn't afraid to make a few uncomfortable choices to get there. Hats off... if only all of us could love our careers as much!

This is exactly the kind of tabloid reporting that drives me crazy. To lead with this headline is stupid when after reading the article the main point of it is not at all that he is gay, but that he finds playing these characters who happen to be gay interesting due to their struggle and obstacles that they have faced. I wouldn't care if he were gay, but he clearly isn't... and that was a ironic statement that he made and I am sure the journalist knew this and well it was probably the bosses at CNN who decided to make this the headline. So irritating how journalism in this country distorts everything.

It would seem more likely that he plays gay men in movies because he fits the stereotypical gay "look". It makes him more believable as a gay man to the general public. So in a sense, we put him in gay roles and then accuse him of being gay. or He is gay and thinks this is kinda funny.

I saw you many years ago when you were here filming "Buster and Billy". I lived and grew up about 1.5 miles from the old school where alot of the filming was done.
