Natalie Portman is pregnant and engaged

So much for that lithe "Black Swan" ballerina body - Natalie Portman is pregnant!

A rep for the 29-year-old Golden Globe nominee confirms to CNN that Portman and choreographer Benjamin Millepied are engaged and expecting their first child together.

French-born dancer Millepied, 33, has performed with the New York City Ballet and was the choreographer for Portman's critically acclaimed thriller "Black Swan." The couple were first romantically linked last New Year's Eve, when they attended a party together in New York City.

Portman has not yet revealed the baby's due date or when the wedding will take place. Stay tuned!

@Annoyed,agree. i read the bible, and im waiting to have children after im married ((and that which leads up to children)) i know society has taken that belief and twisted and pulled and manipulated it. of course, things like this cant really be changed once theyve happened. abortion is an option, but i dont really agree with that either. (please dont trash me because of my opinion). what ever natalie does is her choice. and we should back her up.

It's amusing to me how all opinions are relevant except ones from religious people. I'm not talking about religious nut jobs but people who read from and respect the teachings of the Bible. I don't agree people should have children out of wedlock. I think if more women took the time to establish a real relationship with a man, most marriages wouldn't end in divorce. I wish this couple the best but that does not mean I have to agree with their decisions. In the long run, it isn't me they have to answer to.

    December 28, 2010 at 5:56 am | Report abuse |

So it's the responsibility of a woman to establish a strong relationship? What is the man supposed to be doing? If the marriage fails, it's the woman's fault?

Marriage can be legal and/or spiritual. What does a piece of legal paper have to do with raising a baby? Also what of the couple isn't spiritually inclined? What would be the point of the marriage contract in either case?

Really it's none of your business how they dedicate themselves to each other and their baby. They probably announced the pregnancy to forego any tabloid speculation of the soon to be seen baby bump which is probably more annoying then this speculation, but not by much.

One, she can afford her kid, more than most people in this country can do. Two, no one here knows if they planned the baby or not or if they were engaged prior to the pregnancy. All the article says is they were announced at the same time. Three, it is QUITE easy for birth control to fail. Those of you pretending you're so smart by criticizing her for being pregnant obviously know nothing about that or about whether her dancing changed her cycles (as often does for ballet dancers).

Thought she was better than getting pregnant and engaged. The novelty of a baby with the wrong partner wears off, I'm sure. To have a man's baby a year after after knowing him is no good. She shouldnt have it, even if she can afford it. She should know better than to make this mistake. A man who impregnates a woman before the man proposes is not trustworthy. They should decline this and wait to see if the union is solid. He's likely after her money.

Another backwards relationship, first comes the child then the commitment. When can people make grown up decisions to raise a family, but first commit to each other till death do us part. No one takes marriage serious anymore. I promised my wife on our wedding day that I would take care of her all of her life, and thats what I will do. She did the same and I expect that she will honor her promise as well. 25 years so far.

Almost 50% of marriages fail, maybe a higher % for celebrities, and an ironic divorce line is, "We are the best of friends and want what is best for our children, and will continue to do what is best for them; we just aren't compatible anymore." Why don't these people PRETEND they are divorced (best of friends!) even if they are miserable while married, and wait until their kids are grown to ACTUALLY divorce?! That's right stay together for stability and normalcy for your kids! If you are actors, it should be easy to fake being happy for your kids, and when the kids are independent, then split! How phony to say you are the best of friends, then confuse and damage your kids by "happily" divorcing and shuttling them between houses with exposure to new rotating girlfriends or boyfriends!

It seems like 90% of Hollywood doesn't know how birth control works.
My theory is that she probably had amenorrhea (stop of menstruation due to her losing too much weight for Black Swan) so she probably thought she didn't need birth control. Wrong, it doesn't mean her body still isn't releasing eggs!

These Hollywood types always seem to fall in love "on the set" of their last movie/show. They never practice contraception and the marriages last for less than 3 years. They live and work in make-believe worlds. Reality is not in their make-up. Their personal lives are usually a mess – why do we think that we need to listen to them. I love Natale Pportman and hope that this works out. BUT!!!!

To those who are bashing Ms. Portman for becoming pregnant before getting married:

The article does not provide an order of events, probably intentionally, because this sort of thing is controversial. Did any of you stop to think that perhaps the two are madly in love and planned this pregnancy? It's possible, and there's not a thing wrong with it. There's no need to vilify this amazing actress based on your petty assumptions.

In pre-Victorian times, it was common not to get married until a baby was expected. Some would get married first, though if a baby did not come within a few years the marriage would be annulled,

Only in our "modern" age have we held such archaic beliefs as to the "proper" order of the events of marriage, pregnancy, and the like.

I agree with you, I am shocked that she was able to become pregnant after such dramatic weight loss on her already lithe frame. I just became however that she has been dating her fiance for over a year now and its quite possible that she is already several months into her pregnancy. Just bc Black Swan is just now being released doesnt mean that she filmed it just recently. They were first outed as a couple last New Year at a party in NY.

First everyone should congratulate Portman on keeping the baby and not aborting it.

Then tell your kids that Protman's decision is second best. Harsh words sometimes get attention. Best is a marriage that is a marriage, not a marriage based solely on the goal of child rearing. Good way to make you and your partner feel special? Get married first. If that doesn't happen, then do your best to turn your relationship into something good. (yes there are implications to that statement and they should be there) Also point out that there need not be lockstep life plans. While Portman is doing the guidance teacher approved thing and getting married near to thirty, actually getting married anytime is fine.

    December 27, 2010 at 2:03 pm | Report abuse |
    • Edwin

How is it you somehow KNOW the primary purpose for this relationship is child rearing? Some people actually choose to avoid marriage because of the complications. In the case of Hollywood stars, they often avoid it because of the media frenzy. The only compelling reason for them to get legally married is to protect the child from legal issues.

I have lots of friends and colleagues who did similarly (without the Hollywood glitz). They did not want the hassle and expense of a wedding, so they never got married until they were expecting. The relationships and vows were real, however, and already in place LONG before the pregnancy.

Have you thought that maybe they WANTED to get pregnant? My husband and I were engaged for only a few months when I found out I was pregnant. Birth control failed. We chose to bump the wedding up and we got married much sooner than planned. Two children and 7 years later, we are very happy and still very much so in love. Even if I hadn't gotten pregnant, we still would have married at some point. Perhaps Natalie and her fiancée were engaged first and just hadn't announced it yet. As far as I can see she prefers to stay out of the tabloids and leads a very quiet and private life.

Actually, couple—and other mass nouns such as squad, force, team, fish, etc.—can be used with either singular or plural verbs. It all depends on the connotation that the writer is trying to achieve. In this case, the use is perfect, as none of us posting were aware that the two were/are one. (The couple of people versus two people coupled as one.)

Define "correct" order. What might be the proper order for one person is not necessarily the way that it works out for another person. It is ignorant, and unnecessarily judgmental to assume that this is not the right order for Ms. Portman. So you think she should have done things differently? Good for you, do you want a cookie? Different chronological movements work for different people. There are people who have gotten engaged, married & pregnant just to end up miserable then divorced. There is no "right" way that works for the entire world.

She had a career booming before she finished high school or college. She did that "out of order" too. Do you think that is wrong? I think you should open your mind to other ways to live your life. Just because its not right for you doesn't mean that it doesn't work for someone in this world. You can come down off your high horse now.

Reading comprehension fail, seriously. Thanks for playing.

You may still get your chance. Even though I like Natalie Portman – and hope she is happy – chances of Hollywood marriages lasting are slim to none. Hollywood is like the revolving door of marriage and divorce.

Given the hollywood divorce rate and the ordinary Joe rebounds, I would say your chance has improved. :-p

I give her credit for marrying a ballerina with less money than she. However, unless you are wealthy or a brilliant artist you do not have a chance.

@Realist – Which team does he not play for? He seems to have 4-bagged Natalie Portman, that should give you a clue which way he swings.
