Twins on the way for Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon deserve a second round of congratulations: The couple is expecting twins!

Nick Cannon confirmed the news on New York’s 92.3 radio station Thursday morning with a special story about what famous couple was the first to find out that Cannon and his wife are expecting twins.

There’s been plenty of speculation about whether the baby's a boy or a girl - or, if there was more than one on the way - since Carey first confirmed she was pregnant, but Cannon, 30, says they were wary of revealing too much.

But the questions about Carey’s pregnancy became unavoidable – especially that little nugget about whether the 41-year-old singer was carrying twins.

“I couldn’t avoid that question anymore and people became fascinated with that...In order for my wife and I to live our [lives], we have to be up front and I need to be able to share things with you,” the “America's Got Talent” host said, even admitting, “I haven’t even told my wife I’m doing this so I’ll probably get yelled at for not getting permission.”

He then went on to explain how Carey, who performs during TNT's "Christmas in Washington 2010" in front of the First Family, spilled the beans.

“She’s singing this song ['One Child'] and she goes backstage, and she has the opportunity to speak with the President and the First Family, and they even questioned my wife about what she’s having,” Cannon revealed. “At this point, she hadn’t told anybody anything, because doctors advised we keep it to ourselves. [But] because of the excitement and the emotion, she shared with the President and the First Lady that we are having twins.”

Cannon added that the couple looks forward to sharing with their two kids that with all of the excitement about their impending arrival, it was the President and the First Lady who got the scoop.

And as for the two babes? They’re doing just fine, Cannon said.

“We had another ultrasound last night, and everything is a-ok,” he said. “The babies are healthy.”

Mariah, you should sing to your children from the time they are born. It would be a wonderful gift to all if they turn out to have as beautiful a voice as you do. My God bless you and Nick with a wonderful experience both during your pregnancy and after. You have worked hard for your career and your family times will be rewarding.

Congrats on the babies! That is awesome! Some people are just mean and have no moral compass and don't know it's extremely rude to say such horrible things. If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. And I agree that the people claiming to be good, Christian people are leaving some of the worst comments. Oh and pregnant women aren't fat–theyre pregnant. Kate hudson gained–what 70 pounds when she was pregnant with her son. Mariah is supposed to be having twins–leave her weight alone. And she will get back to her old self after she delivers and has time to heal from giving birth. Seriously the common sense of some people is truly astonishing. And just because someone is rich does NOT mean they don't deserve to have their own biological children if possible. Children are a gift from God. This is the US, not China–we don't have population control. That's like something out of Brave New World or something. Seriously. Oh and just because they're famous (or maybe you're a racist and its because they're black) but that doesn't mean they're drug dealers. Some of you people need to grow up. I wish this couple nothing but the best, and a long, happy life with their twins.

Ladies: Get lives, please. People who police the way other people have children are pathetic. The who, what, when, why, how of someone else's fertility is none of your business. Grow up, please. The world is full of tragedy and sorrow that needs our attention. Rich people having babies later in life because they've been blessed with the money and moxie to pull it off is not one of them.

Why can't people just be happy for other people's happiness and if not then keep your comments to your self?? So what if they used fertility drugs or IVF to conceive a child or if they lied about it? Is it really anyones business?? They did what they had to do to make their dreams come many of you do that or just give up? People amaze me! I am happy for them. I am 8 months pregnant now and it is such a blessing and i know the happiness they are experiencing and i hope they enjoy it just as much as i do!! AND.....having children does not make you fat or less desirable....its a beautiful thing....but only real men realize that. So before being shallow minded people....just keep your opinions to yourself!!

Do or did you tell your beautiful wife, everyday of her pregnancy how fat & disgusting she was? I do hope your children show you & others greater respect than what you have shown here today. God be with you & your family. Oh, if you are really ticked off @ the world; start changing from your home. Change has to come from somewhere; your home sounds like the perfect place to start. @Hawke-Yes it is always good to give and help those less fortunate, and adopting is also a blessing but shame on you for thinking Nick and Mariah shouldn't have a choice, and that they shouldn't have their own, but only adopt or donate money to other children. They have the God given right to have their own children! On a different note, I do find it increaseingly common now that many celebritys are having twins-its happening quiet a bit, which yeah makes one think they r going n and paying the big bucks to make it a certainty. Congrats to Nick and Mariah both though:)

Well put Crista. I'm going with the bet that Hawkes never been in a serious relationship and living with mom, or is a product of the foster system himself, and angry about his own situation. Why do people have to trample on other peoples happiness. Oh and just because they are wealthy doesn't mean they shouldn't be allowed to feel the joy of having their own birth children. Any child is a blessing from God no matter how they are conceived or to whom!!

Congratulations to the family & may God continue to bless you with a healthy pregnancy & a healthy delivery. For those of you who seem to know what is fact or isn't fact, the 1st tri-mester is the worse. My daughter just lost lost twins in September. It was heartbreaking. If the Dr said to keep everything under wraps; you do just that. As for the weight gain, that is normal. Yes, you can get pregnant & have a healthy delivery @ the age of 40 w/out IVR. It doesn't matter how she got pregnant. It's none of your business how she got pregnant. Wish them well & move on. Everyone wants their own family. There own children. There are millions of children who need homes, but not everyone is a candidate for it. It takes a really strong & loving couple/person to adopt. Mariah & her family chose their path for their family. Whose to say they will not add to the family, in the future, by adopting. One step @ a time. Give them a break. They are doing what is right for them. I think that is what your problem is.

  84. mariahsfriendt

I have to comment on this for the ignorant people out there... 1. Mariah did not "wait" to have a baby. They have only been married 2 years and have been trying. 2. Fertility clinics are not only for IVF's. You have to go there when you are having trouble conceiving. They run tests on you to see if your tubes are clear, you are producing eggs etc... tests that you cannot get at the OBGYN. 50% of women have trouble conceiving after the age of 40. 3. After you are 35, your chances of having twins go up between 5 – 17% depending on your age. 4. Mariah and Nick are not drug addicts, drug dealers, etc... 5. It's close to impossible to control your weight when you are pregnant. With twins, 60 pounds of weight are babies and fluids. 60 pounds!!! That does not include what your body stores as fat so that you can breastfeed – 2 babies. 6. Finally, as far as those "waiting to have children" comments go... sorry, but some of us are not as fortunate to find the love of our lives in our 20's or even in our early 30's. Some of us have no choice but to have babies later in life, but nevertheless, being able to have a baby at all is a blessing that everyone should be able to enjoy – even celebrities.

Why do people have to spread their unhappiness with their lives to others? What is the point of leaving negative comments? Does it really make you feel better to gossip about how someone became pregnant? I'm so happy for Nick and Mariah! What a wonderful blessing, those babies will have all the love in the world. God Bless.

just so people know, you don't get IVF just because you go to a fertility clinic. There are several other procedures a woman goes through. Many fertility drugs cause multiples births like chlomid and progesterone.

    December 16, 2010 at 12:59 pm | Report abuse |
    • missmangles

Progesterone doesn't cause you to ovulate multiple eggs - it only helps maintain the pregnancy once pregnancy has occured. Clomid alone will not help a woman in her 40s.

Actually, "missmangles", it is a medical FACT that the older a woman is, the more likely her chances are of having multiple births, so you are VERY WRONG in your assessment. I'm not really much of a fan, but good luck for this new family forming, its always a blessing.

Actually, that's only true if you've had been pregnant before, and even then, the risk of twins is still only slightly higher than in the general population. The reason for so many multiple births in older moms, according to numerous studies - is the rise in fertility treatments.

Eden, so what's your point? It's not your business if she received fertility treatment. Every woman is different, some women can have children naturally and some, like myself, can't have children and need a little help. Its their choice; not yours.

I did not make the "piggy" comment - I don't know why it's showing up with my name. But yes, she is a liar. She couldve just said "that's personal / no comment / all babies are a gift no matter where they came from" or something to that effect. But when she makes a point of denying that she used IVF, when everyone "in the know" knows different, she is very much misleading the public and women who want children but think they can wait forever to have them.

Why add two more people to the world? Guess the drug dealers are happy though.

why should celebrities be denied the joy of raising a family? It is not their responsibility to take care of the families who can't support their kids. we have government programs in place for that. And maybe the people who can't support their kids should stop having more children. At least these two are able to financially provide. and did I miss something Hawke? I didn't hear the news about them getting divorced. Hmm. You must know an awful lot about the inner workings of their marriage to go around saying things like that. This is all well and good, but she has lied about conceiving her pregnancy "naturally" even though she has been spotted at an LA fertility clinic, and admitted to taking progesterone to support the pregnancy. Sorry, she did more than take progesterone. By going out of her way to state that these babies were not the result of IVF, she misleads women into thinking you can delay motherhood into your 40s and BAM you get pregnant with twins. And that's just not the way it works.

And you know she used IVF how? Just because she was seen at a fertility clinic? You are aware that there are many other methods of fertility treatments other than IVF right? How do you know she just didn't take clomid or any of the other fertility meds? Or how do you know she didn't do IUI or ICIS or GIFT? Or how do you know she wasn't just seeing the doctor to make sure her and her husband are actually fertile? What does taking progesterone treatments have to do with anything? Not all women produce enough to support a pregnancy until the placenta takes over and is something that has become standard in giving to women who have a history of previous miscarriage. And honestly what does it really matter if she did any of that? She's not the only woman in the world who may have had to turn to fertility specialists to conceive children. I did twice. She doesn't owe you or any other person in this world an explanation of how she got pregnant. She didn't mislead anyone. And you know the older you get the chances for twins actually DO increase. And statistically almost every woman has the same 1 in 100 chance of getting pregnant with twins naturally.

I don't think she needs to discuss her personal business to the public. Who care's anyway on how she conceived her babies. And if she lied, kudos to her. Why does the public think we have a right to know celebrities personal business. Just because they are in the limelight, doesn't mean they have to disclose everything about their lives to other's. Geesh!

I see the point you are trying to make, but this is not Mariah's fault, or any other celebrity who needs to use fertility treatments and chooses to keep their reproductive life from the public eye. It's the normal women who look at magazines and think they can have a baby at 47 like Kelly Preston or have twins at nearly 50, like Nancy Grace. Shame on them for leaving their mothering until the last minute because that's what celebrities can do, and then being upset when it doesn't seem to happen as easily as it looks on US weekly. A woman who is only moderately informed about reproduction knows that a womans fertility starts to decline after age 27 and that the older you are, not only the harder it is to conceive, but the higher chance of twins, chromosomal abnormalities and high-risk pregnancy. This is NOT the fault of celebrities being 'misleading' by not sharing their private health issues with the public.

I agree it's none of our business, but i also agree they should not outright lie about it. Mariah saying she got pregnant just from accupunture, or Nicole Kidman saying it was from a fertility waterfall...i agree they should just say no comment and leave it at that.

I personally know several women in their early 40s who conceived naturally.. advanced maternal age actually INCREASES your risk of multiples because you can begin firing multiple eggs as hormonal fluctuations begin. So it might take you longer to conceive but your chance of multiples is higher than a woman in her 20s. Congrats to her either way... she was probably told she had to postpone motherhood for her "image" by her labels... good for her to take the leap. Whether natural or not. And just a side note – fertility clinics also usually handle regular gyn treatment too, especially in women her age who are considered higher risk simply by being older. The clinic I went to with my baby was a "fertility clinic" but also handles all of the regular gynecological/obstetrical treatment not just for fertility treatment women.

missmangles---You are indeed eith stupid and dumb, or dumb and stupid! Just because you go the IVF route does not guarantee multiples. I went through 6 intr-uterine and 2 IVF and they all failed; three months later I became pregnant with twin boys at the age of 42 and that is after trying for 7 years. So.when you start throwing stones at someone because they need a little help conceiving, thank God for someone else's joy and don't spread you VILE and PURE IGNORANCE to others in regards to HOW THEY CONCEIVED!

I would agree with you. In the grand scheme of things, statistically twins occur in 1 in 33 births, or about 3% of all births. Yet celebrities including Jolie, Roberts, etc. are popping them out every two minutes. That comes off as way too much a statistical improbability without some help.

it is because when approaching 40, these women are more likely to go the IVF route, hence increasing the chances of multiples.

Actually as women age their release more eggs at one time to increase the chances of pregnancy. It's not to do with IVF although IVF has a higher chance of multiple pregnancies because the doctor implants multiple fertilized eggs to increase your chances of it "taking" a la Natalie Suleman. Although they usually don't implant *that* many. I believe they had a miscarriage so perhaps Mariah used fertility drugs to increase her chances of getting pregnant again. Either way, it's a blessing and I love Mariah's music and wish them the best.
