'Dexter' stars file for divorceIt seems there's no life left in the marriage of "Dexter" co-stars Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter. The couple have announced that they've split up. "Having been separated for some time, Jennifer Carpenter and Michael C. Hall have filed for divorce," their reps tell CNN in a joint statement. Carpenter, 31, wed Hall, 39, on December 31, 2008, and stood by him as he battled Hodgkin's lymphoma this year.
"The triumph of a man, to have gone through something like that and not even give the crew any suspicions that he was in any sort of need, it's impressive," she told the New York Times in September. Access Hollywood reports that Carpenter attended Sunday night's season 5 finale party alone and often talked about their troubles on the set of the hit Showtime series. Now their co-stars are worried about how the actors – who play brother and sister – will get along when they start shooting the upcoming sixth season. Stay tuned.

ccr, you just ruined one of the biggest surprises of the series for me with your careless post. This is an article about Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter, NOT about what happens at the end of season 5.
You shouldn't be dropping major spoilers here, and the very least you can do is clearly mark your post with **SPOILERS** so that other people don't stumble on your comment like I did.
I can't even tell you how annoying this is after I've recently watched the first two seasons and really enjoyed the show. I hope a spoiler ruins a television series for you, so you learn your lesson.
The season was SO BORING! It shows when there are classically trained actors like the Trinity killer. Lumen was a goon (the character). And Emily Rose please eat some food.
Not really surprising, since Hollywood marriages between actors/actresses tend not to last.
I'm glad I'm not in that cast though. If she was talking about their problems on the set rather than keeping it between the two of them, I'd imagine it wasn't an amiable divorce. Speaking to others in public about marriage problems implies you aren't able to talk in private. It's going to be really uncomfortable for the other cast and crew. They'll have to take sides.
Probably a good thing its the last season.

I can't say enough how impressed I am with Michael C.Hall's work, He is what I would call a true professional at what he does,And that is being an actor,He's Not really a serial killer he just ACTS like one and he does a super super job at it. My wife and I both we not into the first few seasons of Dexter,But we did catch on around season 3 I think,ANd we have been hooked every since. I was so upset when I found that Michael was sick because we have lost so many wonderful people to the very same disease. I send out well wishes to the both of them,And I honestly think that their working together on the set of Dexter will not be any problem at all,They are very seasoned actors and I feel that the won't let their private lives effect their jobs.Good Luck to the both of you.
Her character Deb always seems like she's crying or about to cry on the show. I suppose its good for an unemotional Dex to have her balance him out but it gets to be a bit much for me. I will say the scene on the last show where she tells Lumen and Dex to leave was killer and a great performance though. Anyway it must have been hard for them to work together and be married. Best wishes to both.
Good observation Karl! I happen to feel the same way. Sometimes, it seems the writers have poor Deb crying a lot! Not that Jennifer isn't good at it, she is! But, I think it gets overdone at times and they forget that Jennifer's character can also be very funny with some of the crazy lines written for her. I wish we could see more of that in the next season. Also, agreed, the part where Deb confronts Dex & Lumen between the sheets was brilliant (as usual). 🙂

I mentioned Masuka, only because people were talking earlier about 'killing off' Debra, who is a central figure. The writers did 'kill off' main charachers previously (Doakes & Rita). If they were to 'kill off' another main character in the next season, I offered up Masuka, but only because his character isn't integral. Although, if Masuka were done-in, I would miss him terribly because he is just so cute & ridonkulously hilarious!!

It's too bad that it didn't work out... many hollywood marriages don't last because either party can afford to leave the relationship. If they're not happy, then they end it (not that some don't try to work it out). I think more marriages would split up if finances weren't a major factor. I'm all for marriage (and in a pretty happy one), but if it's not working, then why stay? Best of luck to both of them... and hoping it doesn't make either miserable on set.

I think its funny how sometimes in TV shows its the brother and sister that get together. Same thing happened in Roswell...They split up and did fine...hopefully since they play brother and sister they'll still be fine together...its worse when people who play partners on the show divorce...cause then they don't want to act that chemistry (alias, happy days).

actually this is pretty sad news to me... first off, they are both very talented...they look great together...i love both of them in Dexter individually and as brother/sister... also, my name is jennifer and my husband just went through a year long battle with cancer...so i loved that aspect of their relationship

Hello real world. I love the show "Dexter". They will not kill Debra off she is an intricate part of Dexter's life. It's too bad that they are ending things considering what they have gone through in their personal lives with his illness but that sometimes that can also take an emotional tole on people also. We aren't in their house and their personal lives. So don't judge. Unless you are perfect which no one is.

Although I think her character often amuses me, she cries often and is kond of annoying. I also do not find her attractive. Julie Benz is much better looking, but her character was kind of annoying....especially 4th season. Im sure the gobs of money these two divorcees are getting to act will be more than enough encouragement for them to stick around. If they are just now filing for divorce then they probably have not been getting along for a while now. No reason things cannot stay the same.

Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter play brother and sister so convincingly that I was surprised to hear they were married in the first place. They're both great actors, and I am sure that they can likewise set aside their marital difficulties to continue playing the these wonderful characters without a hitch.

All of them are fantastic & I enjoy every character immensely, Batista, LaGuerta, Masuka! I would weep if Deb weren't on the show, she's awesome! Deb can make me cry or laugh like hell & is a big reason I tune in every season! Dexter & Quinn are both my heroes and I still miss Doakes! So, I hope the writers don't kill anyone of these main characters off, though I am glad Rita was offed & maybe they can kill Masuka but only because he's not really necessary...I was a bit disappointed in the season finale though – was great to tie everything up for next season, but there was no cliff hanger? Maybe I am a spoiled fan...cya next year!
The cliff hanger...THAT'S exactly what was missing. I watched it on on-demand & the description wasn't there so I had no idea I was watching a finale! I agree, I'm a spoiled fan too, this is the first time they've left the season with some closure. I was glad to see he's a bit more "human" now...probably because of Lumen!
Dexter and Deb are not blood-related. Yes, Harry had an affair with Dexter's mom, but it was established in an episode via a DNA test that Harry was not Dexter biological father.

Good comment! I am wondering why everyone is focusing on Jennifer's physical appearance. What does that have to do with a marital break-up? I wish them both well, and hope they can continue to work together. The fact that they did stay together through Michael's illness says alot about how they care for each other – but maybe not enough to be married.
Also to all the people talking about her character, they should realize that only a really great actor or actress can make people hate their character so much. So she must be a great actress afterall. And she can only work with the script she has been given......
Also, though Deb is not the best actress, she is a million times better than julia stiles. Ms.Stiles made the 5th season nearly unwatchable.

Her character could get killed by some locked up mob guys as she gets to close to a secret they are hiding. Then Dex gets himself locked up with them offs them while in jail The End. Or Dex finally snaps and she finds out and they go on the run together or she ends up just offing him right there as he is just like his half-brother that nearly killed her.
I think Dex will let himself get caught to save Debra.
And then they'll fast forward ahead in time to baby Harrison as an adult, and he'll be like his father.
Well I started to watch this series about 2 months ago. A good friend of mine lent me the first 4 seasons on DVD. I signed up to HBO to watch the rest. Now attcking his wife who i can tell is not the best actress in the world, but then again you would never have great actresses like charlize theron, meryl streep, jody foster etc in primetime sitcoms so what do you expect? They are the only 2 that know what happened behind closed doors. Maybe she was a diva, or he had a chip on his shoulder. Their characters we like or dislike are just their characters, not what they are in private. I wish both of them luck, and if they can be professional enough to carry on with the show great if not then the show is called dexter, not Debra!

I know the show is on showtime, but I am in Canada and the show is played through our channel 301 which is part of HBO in my town.
I love Dexter but seasons 3 and 4 are only ok compared to the epicness that was seasons 1 and 2. Michael C Hall is amazing but good lord Deb is so annoying on the show i gag. dex is on the loose now!
Wow, that was quick after only two years. Hope they remain in good terms. I like Michael C. Hall but Jennifer Carpenter is a terrific actress with beautiful eyes.

My guess is they'll now have just enough animosity to come across even more like a real brother and sister.
Carpenter's character on the show comes off like she's an unstable personality. Her relentlessly foul language makes her sound like she is emotionally out of control all the time. It's too much. There's no respite from her Tourette's-like outbursts. OK, we get it. She's got a potty mouth! Give it a rest! If she and Hall can't work together after the split, then I am all for finding a way to deal Debra out of the series. She hasn't really contributed anything since season #2 anyway. Her current relationship with Quinn was far too predictable. What is also predictable is that it cannot last because both of those characters are psychological train wrecks. I see a double-murder in the near future of this series.
If anything, I blame consistently poor writing for her character for the lame, overdone foul language. And her being a weak actress certainly didn't help it feel less forced.
The writers really overdo it with her and the "f" word.

In the finale of season 5, one scene she was making her usual contorted cry face, and I swear, I thought one of her eyes were going to pop out of the socket and fall onto the floor. They're just so buggy, and un even, like the rest of her face. Next season she should find out about dexter, so that she has a real reason to cry on set.

Its cause she messed with colored guys, Dexter hates the blacks and hispanics. Oh actually Micheal C Hall hates them, thats why after filming they say he wont go anywhere near florida and especially Miami.
This is actually for Debs Lover. Michael C. Hall played a gay undertaker, David Fisher, in Six Feet Under. His boyfriend was BLACK. They made out several times in the series (yes, MCH kissed and tongued a Black man). MCH does not have a problem with dark skin, but you might.
Well it seems that Michael likes to rush to the alter with co-stars. Oh well, I'd rather have the weird vibe of them having been recently divorced playing brother and sister than still being married doing the same. Even the sechs scenes for both characters were less steamy these last two seasons. Obviously outside relationships do not mix inside. Now if Batista and LeGuerta would just get divorced; terrible story line.
$100 says Season 6 is the end anyway.

The woman I mariried was a dancer at my night club and I can assure you its good to marry who you work with. She understands I need to break in all the new young 18 year old girls before they dance and now she gets to puch them around and be a manager at the club. Its a plus for both of us, so your comment is wrong.

Deb is one of the only things keeping Dexter attached to humanity, so they will never kill her off but their Real-life relationship always seemed bizarre, so I'm not surprised they are splitting up. From what I've read though, Hall is good about being professional, regardless of his personal life, so I doubt it will be an issue. Besides, we all knew a Man-Elf relationship was destine to fail...
Don't think the divorce will have any big impact on their acting together. I mean they were husband and wife acting like brother and sister so if they can pull that off they should be okay. if not yes kill Deb off. Though doesn't this show follow stories from a series of books? The author may not like too many changes.
Nah, the show stopped following the books half way thru Season 1. I mean, LaGuerta gets killed in Book 1 and Doakes is still alive in the 5th book. The show went off in a totally different direction a long time ago.
I say dont kill her off, as that would be too much for good ol DEX. Let her get married and move away with Quin, Problem solved get rid of both of those losers......

Mike B, is it not implied that Harry is Dexter's real father? Deb is is half-sister (different mom) and Brian was his half-brother (different dad).
to Wawawat's comment on dexter's father: no, Harry wasn't his dad. Remember, both he and his brother went to their dad's house to clear it out after he died. Dexter even had a DNA test done. So, he and Deb are not blood related.
ghislaine – If you go back and listen between the lines, that old guy's DNA does not "rule in" that he was Dexter's bio-dad it merely suggested he was "related" to Brian and Dexter, which he would be as Brian's bio-dad. All three would have some level of matching DNA to thus furthering Brian's plan. They hint at it a couple of times in Season's 3 and 4 that Harry may have actually been Dexter's bio-dad. If I recall correctly, the books hint at it as well. I'd have to go back and check.

I hope Carpenter is a great actress, because if she's anything like the character she plays on Dexter I wouldn't be able to stay in the same room with her for five minutes, let alone in a marriage. Of course, it's sad when any marriage comes apart, but these two are so good on that show that it seems like they were more than just brother & sister and husband & wife. Maybe, during his illness, they both decided that they had gotten married for the wrong reasons.

If you truly feel her character is annoying, then stop watching the show because her character is critical. The writers write, and Jennifer the consummate professional brings that writing to life. Check out Jennifer's fairly recent interview (CNN has it somewhere) regarding the motivations for her character's behavior. Numerous fans hope your wish doesn't come true – the character doesn't need to meet a violent end, but your commenting does.

Why all the haters here?! She did nothing wrong. Relationships sometimes don't work–for whatever reason, so stop calling her a "ho", or dissing her for no reason. She's an attractive, young lady who I'm certain will not have any problems finding another guy. Jealous women here just need to get a grip and the men don't know what the hell they're talking about.
Shane- agreed. Frankly, Deb is one of my favorite characters on the show. I like her cussing and I appreciate the honesty of her character. In fact, her character's emotional frankness is, I believe what some people are misinterpreting as instability. Granted, as a straight woman, perhaps I'm not the best judge of what men find attractive, but I believe her to be attractive. These "skinny" comments seem shallow and unwarranted. Last, they already killed off the most annoying woman on the show- Rita. What a wet blanket. Now there's a woman that could drive a man to kill.
I don't fault either of them, because I don't know the details. But being part of such a short marriage shows that either one or both didn't take it seriously, or one or both rushed into something they should have never entered. People take marriage way too lightly, yet we still have many conservatives trying to rail against living together before marriage. A lot of failed marriages would never begin in the first place with sufficient time living in close quarters beforehand.

I hope their break up does not affect the show, they are both fantastic on it. Not sure why all the hate on Jen, she is dynamite and is almost as main character on the show as Dex and she is a terrific actress. If she were like that in real life, I for one would not mind. Refreshing to have a woman actually say what she's thinking and put it out there (hmm seems like Quinn said this). She is also very cute (which does not hurt) a bit too skinny and could really use a boob job, but if she goes down, so does the show.....
