Carnie Wilson: 'I'm fat'

It doesn't look like there will be any New Year's resolutions regarding weight loss from Carnie Wilson.

The Wilson Phillips singer famously underwent gastric bypass surgery for the cameras, but now appears to have made peace with her battle with the bulge.  She recently told PopEater "I'm fat as f**k, what can I say?"

The mother of two, who once weighed more than 300 pounds, has been very open about her struggle with her weight. Following her surgery, she reportedly lost 150 pounds in 16 months. She later gained weight following her pregnancies and even participated in the VH1 show "Celebrity Fit Club," where she lost over 20 pounds.

But these days, she seems to be over it. "You know, after all these years, it's just like we are who we are and it's a struggle for me and sometimes I'm heavier and sometimes I'm thinner," she told PopEater.

WTH with you, people!!! When you don't know how it feels to be FAT, don't say any words. When all you can say is only insult, shut your "banci" mouth. I AM FAT AND I AM HAPPY! And if you don't like what you see, just pull your eyes out from their socket. Easy, rite???

I had gastric bypass in 1998. I weighed 285 at 5'4 and lost 125lbs. I am still at 160 now at age 54. I followed instructions after the surgery and eat whatever I want in moderation whenever I want. Carnie is a sugar addict and after watching Unstapled I am not surprised she's fat again. You blew it!

No sympathy for Carnie here. She IS fat, borderline obese. She has made a living being fat, losing it, gaining it back. Waaaaaaa! She is going to have major health issues because she eats too much, with no regard how it is affecting her family. I am fed up up with fatties, the diet gurus, The Biggest Loser, and the Fat Acceptance movement! If I start gaining weight (which I do during the holidays), I go back to salads and walking every day. She needs to get a real job, live a real life, and maybe she would lose a few.

Evidently being slender is not in her cards. She surgeries...and is now accepting the reality she is going to be fat. What degree is up to her, whether she eats just one extra serving or more is what will determine how fat she gets. Sad she cannot control that battle.

I don't care about the weight. I wish people (the media) would quit being so obsessed about weight. Do you idiots know how expensive it is to eat healthy...Why don't you (the media) go after the food industry to bring down the prices so that we could be healthier? We don't need you to tell us we're over-weight – We do own mirrors!

In a time of war and our Soldiers and Families in harms way, this should not even have made the news or be of any importance to our country. Exploitation of a person's self-esteem may pay the bills for obsessed paparazzi but as a country we nee to be a little more concerned with real issues that affect our security and the lives of those that protect it.

    First things first:
No one is saying that one should purposefully become overweight. The argument is whether overweight people (especially women. Everyone seems to regard overweight men as jolly and funny while the women are classified as gross) should be allowed to consider themselves to be valuable human beings and allowed out in public without being ridiculed. I believe they should be encouraged to love themselves. Think about this for a moment: while our stars have become thinner and thinner over the years, the average citizen has become heavier. Is there a correlation? Could it be that by the time a woman is in her early 30's she has been on some kind of diet half of her life and knows that she will never reach the Hollywood standard of perfection so she simply gives up? Seriously, think about it.
As to the whole "Carnie's kids are going to grow up without a mother," yeah, maybe when they're in their 60's. The fact of the matter is that many people can be heavier than the average and simple be very healthy. It's true. Believe it or not, my grandmother was 50+ pounds overweight her entire adult life and never developed heart issues, diabetes, etc. She took long walks each day until her death at 82 years. Perhaps she could had lived to 90 had she denied her all of the food she loved, but she would rather enjoy life than to live miserably. Everyone needs to make his/her own choices. That being said, I try to eat as healthy as I can (it is very expensive to feed a family of 5 healthy food, no matter what anyone says), and I workout 5 days a week. I know that even if I were to stop eating entirely I could never have the body of Megan Fox, and I'm fine with that. I'm sure that Carnie, like every other celeb who has been called out due to their weight, will come back in 4 months time slimmed down and on a strict Zone type diet and brutal workout regime. That's what they all do; look at Tyra and Jennifer Love Hewitt.
Bottomline: Encourage healthy habits but don't assume slim=healthy or heavy=lazy sick slob. Some of the least healthy people I know have been skinny people who huff and puff up a single flight of stairs.

She looks absolutely stunning. I think that Carnie is living a very rich, creative life, and there is much more to that life than worrying about fitting into some arbitrary rack size. I wish her all the health and joy in the world - the only people she has to consider are the ones who love her.

Kudos to DenverGrl for post # 65! You took the words right out of my mouth. I could not have said it better myself. People get over yourselves you have no right to tell anyone else how to live their lives with respect to how they eat, exercise, or what they do with their bodies. » Furthermore beautiful women come in every shape, size, color etc. The only really ulgy or unattractive people are the ones that are 'ugly' examples as humans from the inside. The Holier than Thou crowd who are mean, nasty & full of themselves and their narrow-minded, ignorant, shallow opinions, like so many that posted here. As for Carnie You ARE a very beautiful woman inside & out, god bless you & your new found innerpeace!

Come on already she wants everybody to feel sorry for her. Well no one should. She would even fail at the "Biggest Loser". The only strong part of her body is her "Right Arm" she uses" that arm to stuff her face. Have you ever noticed the diference. She should stop her whining and try to eat food that is good for her and Exercise and stop stuffing the "Goodies" in her mouth. For someone who has money and can afford all the top trainiers she is a poor example for someone who has had the opportunites to stay in shape. Carnie quit your whining and go away. I know when I was 20 pounds overweight, my knees hurt terribly, I had gastro-intestinal problems, my BP and chloresterol were skyrocketing. Thru determination, I lost the weight...and it wasnt easy (i am post menopausal) and not only do I feel better; I look good too. It is not a matter of money (veges are cheap and walking is free). NO EXCUSES, FOLKS

I had a boyfriend in high school who was overweight. I didn't mind it at the time. Got in touch with him after 25 years and he is a total mess now. In his own words "I sat on the couch grew another body." I can't believe his current wife enabled this behavior. It just disgusts me. I know not every overweight person is a twinkie eating hog, but we all need to live with our decisions in life. I see so many people at the supermarket buying crap that can hardly be labeled as food. I know not everyone has the $$ to shop at Whole Foods, but there are inexpensive and healthy foods like lentils and whole grain products. Trader Joes has good affordable foods. We as Americans should all move a little more and eat a lot less.

I eat pretty much what I want. . . in moderation. I'm 5'11" and weight about 170lbs; most people tell me I look skinny. I can eat burgers and pizza and even sweets. About the only thing that I really watch is my salt intake (since so many modern foods are simply overburdened with salt). As for the rest, I simply don't over do it.

If I eat one unhealthy meal (like a giant sloppy burger with bacon, cheese and all the works, or homemade lasagna with loads of goodies) then I go light on the rest of what I eat during the day and maybe the next. I never count calories and yet I never gain weight. Moderation and exercize is it. That's all we need. I walk at least a couple of miles a day, work on my cardio for maybe 30-45 minutes, with strength training a couple of times a week.

My entire family is however VERY overweight. My Mom, for example is 5'6" and weighs over 250lbs. The difference really isn't in the foods we eat, it's in the amount of physical activities we engage in. We aren't made to sit on our butts all day, and ride around in cars everywhere. The human body is made to be active, and to move.

To be sure, some people have health issues that prevent them from dropping wieght, but they are very much in the minority.

I read this article and the comments and wonder two things. First, how low does your self esteem have to be to actually declare "I'm fat"? Seriously–if you think you are keep it to yourself. Regardless of your weight, nothing is more attractive than someone declaring basically, "Ohhhh, I'm so fat. Poor me!" Same with declaring, "Wow! I am so skinny and hot!" Second, how low does your self esteem have to be to come here berating people for their weight? Worry about yourself and you'll have more than enough to worry about. That includes worrying about your weight.

    December 13, 2010 at 7:40 pm | Report abuse |
    • Elizabeth

She didn't say I'm fat, poor me.. she said I'm fat – so what? And that is finally better self esteem.

As for the haters – it makes them feel superior. Too bad it doesn't manifest outwardly. How cool it would be if every time someone posted something hurtful their ears grew or something. Then we could point at all the people with hater's ears.

As for those who choose to give up a chunk of their lives each day to exercise, congratulations, if it makes you happy more power to you... but don' t you dare use the health system if you ruin any part of your body with your obsessive exercise; and do remember that the extra time you are spending exercising is probably the extra time you are adding to your life... so if I choose to be average size instead of exercise than we're even as far as quality of life where I'm coming from... because to many people being forced to exercise is worse than an early death.

I'll take the shorter life and eat the cheesecake with my friends. Have a slice of life you poor hungry dears.

This is the biggest bunch of immature people writing on here. I grew up in a house with a mom constantly telling me no one would love me if I was fat so I better watch my weight. Depression took a my 140 lbs (I'm 5'6") down to 120 lbs and then up to 230 lbs. Sometimes us fat people have issues that make us eat. We feel bad, we eat. Someone says the cruel things that some of you have said here online to our faces, we eat. The self loathing is horrible. I have lost a lot of weight over the years since my depression lifted, but I will never be 120 lbs again. At that weight I was starving and exercising like crazy. I would rather be a little overweight (like I am now) than starving or morbidly obese. Also I do not have DM type 2 or high blood pressure or high cholesterol. In fact I know more skinny people with those conditions than I do us "fat" people.

Honestly, I think everyone is a bunch of hypocrites. How many of YOU profess beliefs and opinions that YOU do not hold? Get off your high horse, mind your own business and stay more focused in your own life, rather than continuously bashing others. Don't you THINK they already know their issue? There is NO excuse to be obese unless you are completely unable to exercise and are on a very high calorie diet.

In her case, she doesn't exercise, eats the wrong things, is unhappy about it (it's horse-shyt if any obese person HONESTLY says he/she is happy, it's utter horseshyt) and doesn't do anything about it. When she made the choice for her own health (surgically) it didn't do anything to address the fact that she has low self esteem, still does, let's face it, people who overeat to the point of obesity have big mental issues and it's the truth, that's why they do it. So she gave up on herself. Too bad for her. Some people have it together, some don't. Nothings going to change unless we make it change if we have the ability to do it

I just lost over 100 pounds. To do it, I had to give up pretty much my entire life and put it on ice. To maintain it, I'm always hungry and I workout at least 2 or more hours a day. And I still have to lose another 70 pounds. I already eat literally nothing. But I'm going to do it. However, if someone doesn't choose to do what I have to do to lose and maintain, I can't blame them. Sorry folks, being thin is not nearly as easy for some as others.

yeah all you heartless idiots obviously have not seen what she has gone through in her attempts to be healthy and lose weight. If you aren't born with the sort of body chemistry that an overweight person has, you have no clue what that life is like. She even had major surgery that has many nasty lifelong side effects, and she couldn't even eat more than a piece of chicken the size of a strawberry, but her body still keeps returning to it's more natural state. It doesn't take a scientist to understand that everyone's body chemistry is entirely different, and some people should learn to be thankful that they were born lucky instead of being hateful to those who weren't

Being overweight is a choice. I used to be, so I know. I dieted and did all the stupid things that cause you to stress out and gain it all back. Suddenly, I realized it was simple. I had to make the choice to eat the right things, exercise and not over-eat. I didn't starve myself...I just ate better, kept up with the calories and did moderate exercise. I could eat dessert when my calories allowed and didn't eat the whole cake. It's a choice people. You can be pre-disposed to being overweight, but you can maintain a healthy weight by making the choice to not over eat. Carnie is making excuses for not wanting to change her behavior.

You know, I am getting kind of tired of people passing judgement on others. You make it seem like all overweight people do is sit around eating junk food and making excuses. Obesity researchers are finding that there is indeed a gene that casues some people to gain weight more quickly and also casues them to have a harder time losing weight and keeping it off. There is no doubt that obesity is a health problem, and I am by no means suggesting that people just give up and not try to be fit and healthy. But it is also true that the issue of being overweight is not as easy as some people make it seem. I have known people who exercise every day and eat a healthy diet and they are still overweight. Conversely , I have known people who could eat everything in sight, live on junk and are not active and they are still thin. By the way, in case anyone accuses me of making excuses for myself, I am not overweight by medical standards. I just wish that people would stop being so nasty towards other people.

It's the last cookie in the bag, it's already on the plate, it tastes so good, it is a suggested serving, it's as much as my skinny friends eat, it's free, it's going to expire, and on and on. Sounds like a bunch of lame excuses but every time I put something into my mouth I think something like that. We each have our achilles heels and my is Coke, Ice cold with lots of ice in a big glass. I know it's wrong but I can get a fix at every 7-11 and there is a lot of Coke dealers in the country. So I now see the problem, I just have to beat it. Don't hate me, just wish me luck.

Hi Arlee, if nobody here does, I do wish you luck. I was very overweight at one time and still have some to lose. It was the most difficult thing I had to do. Have you tried Weight Watchers? WW helped me to relearn how to eat. Heavier people need a little more calories to lose weight because they have more weight to carry around so they expend more energy doing it. You will need more food than your "skinny" friends at first, so don't go by that. As you lose the weight, the amount you need will decrease. WW also helps you to incorporate the foods you like and give you the tools to monitor the calories in so you can effectively hit that more calories out moment. Again, good luck to you and never give up.

I am happy to say I'm not morbidly obese but I am obese according to the 'chart'. However my doctor and I had a conversation and agreed that I am not in danger from my weight I am actually health. I think Carnie's point and a lot of us fighting the bulge point is we do not need to fight it so much if we are healthy but did not fit the overall image of others. I agree if you are obese and have health issues because of the excess weight you need to do whatever you can to get to a healthy weight for just that health reasons. By the way most people look at me and still would say I'm fat but hey long as I do not have diabetes, great blood pressure, good cholestrol and not health issues I'm okay with it... my health is my concern I want to live long and screw everyone else I'm happy. :o) Size 14 or 16 and happy with it !!

Too much junk food and an unhealthly life style is why you're fat. No matter how you slice and dice it, obese people are not attractive. They're killing themselves. My advice to Wilson is to start being more responsible. Lose the weight not only for yourself but for your kds too. Stop blaming others for your horrible lifestyle and appearance.

All of you people talking about large people like they are addicts is sickening to me. Some people genuinely don't have control over how they got this way, and it certainly wasn't by eating cheesy poofs (I am overweight because I had a serious diease that required me to be on steroids for a year). Despite taking (honestly) every opportunity to eat right, exercise regularly and live an active lifestyle I can't seem to get down toa "normal" BMI.
Doctors run tests, they say I'm 100% healthy, physical trainer says I'm as active as I need to be and show no signs of obesity related problems.
Who are you to tell me that I'm just some lying alcoholic secretly sitting at home with a box of cookies? I bet I have worked harder on my body than you will ever have to. Just because you've been fortunate to never have a weight problem does not give you the right to talk down to people who look like me.

@Jeff Regarding those tribes in African. In African, large women are venerated and much sought after because they are seen to be rich. One genetic marker, a fat pad in the sacral area, has been used to trace a genetic connection to a certain tribe in Africa. These male opinions have nothing to do with laziness, but with cultural bias. Look at classic films from the 40's and 50's women were much larger. Marilyn Monroe was a size 16. BTW, endocrine disorders and medication not lifestyle can cause a person to become obese.

This doesn't solve anything nor does it make any progress in all those chunky people out there who don't want to be that way. This only racks up another excuse to think it's acceptable. Most of the overweight people in this country will die because they are overweight and while curb smoking, alcohol or whatever, we still keep pounding that McDonald's while refusing to walk anywhere that is more than one block away. Want to be un-fat, change your diet, eat the 20 percent of the food in america that isn't unhealthy and exercise off more calories than you consume; those fad diets don't count.

It's true that your weight should not be important. It is afterall an arbitrary number that is dependent on multiple factors. What people should be concerned about is athletic ability, and the truth is that basic human movements like running and pull-ups are compromised by obesity.
I don't care what you like, I just want to know how fast you can run a mile, and if you can do it under 6 minutes and weigh 300 lbs than that would be impressive. The only problem is that you can't, no one can.

She has a psychological disorder in that she uses food as a way to control her emotions. "She is fat" is just a byproduct of that problem. If she could eat healthy and exercise more she would be fine. She and other obese people must stop claiming that food is the problem, it is their mindset. Some people would rather "accept they are fat" and die rather than look at the root cause. I dont know maybe she has looked at it from that perspective but not able to break through to the real problem. But at least state what the real problem is.

Who says? I know lots of older people who are not fat, (or just carrying extra weight), just because they're older. Myself included. Sometimes that just comes about because we are not as active as we may have been at a younger age. I admit it's harder to shed gained weight when you are older and again that comes with lack of physical activity. When you're older you just don't have the same energy in your body even though you may have the resolve in your head. then you look at people like Jack LaLane. Then I gained a little weight back after I stopped working there and my M.D. put me on a liquid diet of 1000 calories. I could only handle 750, 3 meals instead of the snack horrible stuff. I have known quite a number of people who had bariatric surgery, lost a bunch of weight and then gained it all back and more. Until science can come up with a better explanation of weight control, there will still be overweight and underweight people. Many factors control our weight, including hormones, genetics, caloric intake and exercise, but it's not as simple as just "stop eating and get on the treadmill". For those of you smug self-righteous types out there, try walking a mile in an overweight person's shoes.

There's no indication that there is a physiological root to he obesity - and overweighters tend to want to blame their condition on anything other than themselves - so this is just lack of will power coupled with self-destructive dietary behavior.

Actually, SKINNY people can be just as unhealthy. Sure, exercise and a good diet are the way to go no matter what – keeps your heart healthy – but being "overweight" can actually be beneficial, especially when one is female. Society and media have a huge impact of the perception of beauty and health, and it's been proven that being too health conscious, to the point of extreme dieting and unnecessary excess of exercise can actually be just as harmful as being morbidly obese. However, looking at this woman now, she isn't fat. In fact, 60 years ago, she would have been considered to be absolutely perfect the way she is right now. As long as your are comfortable in your body and how you feel, then you're fine. Being heavy doesn't automatically make you unhealthy. Especially considering other factors – bone structure, muscle mass. I weigh 200 lbs. I'm 5'9", I have very strong, very dense bones, and a good portion of my weight comes from muscle mass. So yeah, it's good to exercise – but it's also good to know what's best for your own body, and if she's happy the way she is, then more power to her.

She can do whatever she wants, but the fact is, our insurance dollars are paying for this and it is affecting all of us, because these patients have one complication after another then gain back the weight the majority of the times. All of the studies done showing the successes are done by–you guessed it–bariatric surgeons. We need some internal medicine docs who see these folks for the rest of their lives and don't have financial interest in it doing the studies. Wonder why your insurance rates are rising?

Let me guess, you think it's because of all of the fat people in the U.S., right? Perhaps we should deny fat people the right to buy food. That would solve their problems, I'm sure. Rising insurance costs couldn't have anything to do with big pharma companies charging $100 per pill, or people living longer and requiring more expensive meds to do so, or medical billing fraud. But right, let's just blame it on the fat people. That's an easy scapegoat.

I agree DenverGirl. And for the record, I'm very overweight and have been for over 20 years (and have tried every kind of exercise program, diet plan, and plain old healthy eating and it hasn't worked for me). But guess what? I am not on a single medication for anything. The only thing I've been hospitalized for is to have my tonsils removed. My blood pressure is wonderful. My cholesterol levels are normal. I am not diabetic. I'm overweight. But my health is just fine. I'm not responsible for your insurance rates. And I'm tired of people blaming overweight people for it all the time.

Mary, you are right on many levels. Insurance does take care of many illnesses that we bring upon ourselves because of diet and lifestyle. I don't know what the answer is with folks who blatantly disregard their own health by bad diets and drugs, alcohol, etc. So I guess, logically, we should take smokers, skydivers, race car drivers, drinkers, substance abusers or anyone with any hint of a dangerous type of lifestyle (decided on by the insurance companies of course) and make them ineligible for any health insurance.

By my unlearned estimate, that would leave approximately 15 people in America with a shot at insurance! 🙂

Yea, yea, she's a beautiful person on the inside, has nice hair, personality and all that. Regardless, being overweight is unhealthy and to just accept it as, "that's me", is a cop-out. She's giving up and rationalizing it to herself and sending the wrong message to others, including her children. This is not about a few extra pounds from holiday eating. Like she says, she's fat! It's like I heard Oprah tell Barbara Walters in an interview in TV last week. She doesn't have time to be concerned about her weight struggles anymore. However she has 2.7 billion dollars and that gives her the ability to only have to take time to say, "make me a salad". She has time to eat and get fat but no time to not eat and get thin? Funny how someone can be so intelligent but then can't handle a simple thing as watching your weight.

Overeating is an addiction like any other. It, however, does not help anyone to make fun of them or tell them that all they have to do is exercise and eat right. We have started to realize it does no good to tell an alcoholic or other drug addict to "just say no!" or to tell a smoker to just quit. The dynamics of addiction is not that simple.

going down and up the scale is dangerous for you physically and emotionally. yes, being "obese" stresses your body and systems – if you decide to live at that weight you should accept the risks, including a lower quality of life as you get older and/or dying younger. on the other hand, once you rid yourself of the stress ot looking a certain way, you can enjoy your life!

Yes she is fat. But it's because she doesnt exercise nearly enough and she eats way too much of the wrong food. If she says she doesn't then she's a liar. She doesn't have to be fat but she lacks the discipline to be thin, and she has come to terms with that, so she quit. Nobody's saying she could be wafer thin, but she could be much thinner and relatively healthey instead of being morbidly obese. She will probably develop diabetes (if she hasn't already) and she will end up dying 5-10 years sooner that she would if whe had some self control. But it's her life, so if whe wants to live that way, that's her perogative.

I have never seen one episode of that show. I am just a realist and facts are facts. Her morbid obesity is purely a matter of choice. Don't be offended but that was kind of a stupid reply. All I'm saying is The Biggest Loser knows how to get people where they should be and gives them that knowledge. What the people do with it after the show is up to them. It's called having some self-control, especially when you have the formula that worked and experienced it. If being healthy and lean is not enough incentive, especially when you hear the stories these people tell, I don't know what could be.

Right Citizen, because everyone can spend 4-6 hours a day in the gym and not work or worry with children. That is simply not reality. There certainly something to be said about eating healthy and exercising, but what you see on the biggest loser is not real life. It's a manufactured environment for quick weight loss. People have to transition back into real life and find some way to balance everything that living requires of us (e.g. working 8-10 hours a day, taking care of children and family) with eating and living healthily.

Thomas, so glad you live in her head and know exactly what her "problem" is. Maybe she is a food addict? Many people are hooked on different things and food is really no different. There could be dozens of reasons why she is over her ideal weight, but really it is no one's business but hers and her families. With healthy and helpful, loving support most people can relax and not make food their focus as much. Berating people, handing out insults as if you have no problems or issues of your own, and being generally clueless does not do anything to encourage people.

You are right. The Biggest Loser is extreme. But if you want it bad enough you'll make it happen even if it means lifting gallon jugs of milk while you're home with the kids. Jog to the maillbox, move alittle faster in the supermarket. Little changes can make a big difference. I think we can pretty much all agree a lot has to do with what you stick in your mouth. If you didn't eat you'd die. So you eat. Do you eat a box of Twinkies or carrots and fat-free Ranch dressing? Can you eat one Twinkie but also carrots? I hope you can agree that once you have your body is properly metabolized it can be kept that way with minimal effort. Do you believe that working 8-10 hours a day adds or removes weight? Do you think that all the other activities, (aside from eating), that you do in a day adds or removes weight? Look, I know there are people who just can't help themselves or have some issue that is beyond good eating habits and some exercise. However when you see the stories about the obesity problems in this country, that can't apply to all of them.

Thomas, you are either a former fat person who now knows EVERYTHING about being thin. Or you are a super thin, self hating, image conscious gym rat.

She doesn't seem to be making excuses per say, it seems as if she has given up. When you have gastric bypass and still gain weight back you have serious issues with eating and exercise.

Also, genetics do play a role. And anyone who says they do not is an idiot. If people are genetically predisposed to cancer or other hereditary diseases then why is it not possible that different humans, created by two different humans don't have a genetic normal? Why is that that people believe that NORMAL is what everyone says it is. All people are different, plain and simple. I think the normal for some is ultra thin, others it is larger. But there are extremes to either. If you are genetically disposed to being ultrathing then not eating and exercising puts you at risk. If you are genetically disposed to being a large person then eating like a cow and sitting on your butt will lead to health issues.

But all of us sitting here thinking some goofy scale created 50 years ago that says all 6 billion humans should fall into a height and weight scale is absurd.

Look at a 350 football player with their gut hanging over their pants....exercise like mad but eat like horses. Now explain that and why they don't die young? Also explain the marathon runners who drop dead? Genetics play a role.

But in the case she is a naturally fat person who has done nothing to control herself. She gives up.

You're wrong to believe that. Some people are genetically programmed to have slower metabolisms and some people are genetically programmed to be more prone to food addictions, but that's not the same thing. If she ate 2000-2500 calories of the right foods, in the right intervals, with a reasonable amount of exercise, then she would not be morbidly obese as she is now. Stop making excuses for why pepple are fat.

Thomas, then how do you explain the fact that she continually returns to her original weight? She has tried numerous diets as well as "just eat healthy and exercise," and she stays overweight. Alicia, it's simple. She's not being completely honest. Sure she might try to diet from time to time but chances are she isn't sticking to a healthy diet (and I am not talking about apple slices) and she is probably not exercising the way she says she is. Food addicts are not that much unlike drug addicts in that they are ashamed of their actions so they lie to themselves and they lie to others about the things they do. That's how I explain it.

Thomas is absolutely right. It's simple math. Take in less calories than you burn and lose weight. For example, how many obese Africans do you see in those poor countries? That being said, she's free to be fat. I just hate it when people make excuses and then teach their kids to eat the same way they do.

      December 13, 2010 at 2:59 pm | Report abuse |

Jeff – Not quite that simple. There's a point where you are not taking ENOUGH calories in, and your body reacts by taking any calories it can and storing them into fat.

If you are indeed taking in enough calories for your body, but exerting more energy in exercise than you take in with food – then yes – you will lose weight.

The problem is that most people don't know that – and almost EVERY diet omits that fact. The answer IS simple – eat the correct amount of calories, with a good balance of nutrition, and workout – and you WILL lose weight. Stop the exercise – and you will GAIN weight. All of these other "diets" are frauds – that's the ONLY thing you need to know to lose weight! YOU MUST MOVE TO LOSE WEIGHT.

@Thomas Had my doctors listened to me, when I told them I was inexplicably gaining weight, they would have diagnosed the pituitary tumor before it caused my weight gain due to excess cortisol pouring into my body, the loss of thyroid function and production of human growth hormone. All of these hormones play a role in controlling weight loss and weight gain. Many medications, including birth control pills cause weight gain. So while you are accusing people like me of being lazy, they may be sick or taking a medication that is causing the weight gain. My tumor ruptured and I am blessed to be alive and not blind. Better to fat and alive, than skinny and dead.

And even in those cases your body never stores fat, it just burns a higher percentage of lean body mass in ratio to fat something like 40% lean 60& fat. and to add to that unless you are under 5% (which fatty is not) this really does not become a big issue....

Brain tumor? Not likely. If she had such a condition, don't you think she'd be publicly discussing that, too? She said herself that "I'm fat." That's it.

Why is our society so uppity about admitting when people are overweight? Has anyone noticed that we have 'scaled up' the norm for what is considered thin? 15 years ago, when I was a size 4, I would have been considered average sized woman. I'm a 4-6 now, and it baffles me how often I'm referred to as thin. And I'm no beanpole, either. I'm 5'1", so my BMI is close to the 'healthy' range. In fact, I could stand to lose a few pounds, but I don't talk about that around women larger than me because they freak out. Why can't someone want to slim down without being accused of having an eating disorder these days?

PS: Wilson recently lost a deal as spokesperson for a diet food company because she was not losing weight. At the same time she was selling her own line of cheesecakes. Do the math, folks.

You can believe that, Alicia, but it's simply not true. Some people's metabolisms might be different, but it just means they have to work harder at it than other people – not that they should just give up. Look, I have bad gums, but that doesn't mean I have to just resign myself to my teeth falling out, it just means I have to brush my teeth more and go to the dentist more often than other people – or my teeth fall out.

It's pretty simple Alicia. Dieting is bs. Almost everyone yoyos in weight on a diet. It's part of our unhealthy culture where health is marketed the same way as a get rich quick scheme. To be healthy and in shape, you have a DIET (not a "diet") that is consistently healthy. Like everyone of course you cheat sometimes but it is a lifelong goal towards health. I'm coming at this from the skinny guy who learned how to gain weight but honestly a lot of the same principles apply. Understand nutrition and have a real workout routine, not some bs fad of the day crunches DVD and you will feel a lot healthier along with the realization that you look a lot healthier too. And by healthier I do mean muscular and lean because that is what healthy is (not ano or obese). If you have a gland problem obviously we are talking about a different playing field but that isn't who I am confronting.

    • Seriously?

Go back and watch her on Celebrity Fit Club. SHE WAS NOT DOING THE RIGHT THINGS! It is her inability to accept responsibility that is causing the fluctuations in her weight. People think that just because you do the surgery you will be thin. Guess what, YOU STILL HAVE TO EAT RIGHT! When I gain weight it’s because of conscious choices THAT I MAKE. I know when I pack on an extra 10 lbs it’s because I'm eating out all the time. You know how I lose it? I make home cooked meals and exercise.

And for the poor excuse, that’s BS as well. I came from a family of little means and we able to make it without McDonald’s and Burger King. In all actuality its cheaper to make your meals. When you eat out you pay for 1 meal per person. When you cook at home you make 1 meal for multiple people. On top of that you normally have leftovers.

I applaud shows like the Biggest Loser that show with diet, exercise and personal responsibility ANYBODY CAN LOSE WEIGHT. There have been some that have added it back on, the thing about it is, they understand now that it is THEIR OWN FAULT. I’m sick and tired of the BS surrounding weight. I don’t condone those people that control their weight by simply not eating either. Thinness is not a sign of healthiness. To truly be healthy you eat nutritional meals AND EXERCISE. We live in a sedentary society. And until we realize that there is something other than fast food and TV’s, this issue will not stop.

Easy for you to say JEFF. Tell the poor to learn about nutrition when all they can afford is the mac & cheese or cheaper less healthy food options. Tell that to the poor whose choice for dining out is a fast food restaurant because that's all they can afford.

    • Gnuzzer are exactly right. It's all about balance. Learn about portion control and get active! If you have kids, play with them. If you don't find activities that you love to do. Get off the couch and make better choices with the food you eat. Educate yourself. You don't have to give up the things you love, just learn how to not rely on them to make you feel better. You will find that the weight slowly drops off and that feeling is better than ANY comfort food.

Saying people who are poor have to be fat is silly. Educate yourself and find out ways to eat healthy on a budget. And you do not have to take the family to fast food joints! That is a copout. Make meals fun and enjoyable at home and you'll all be healthier. Involve the whole family in researching recipes and food ideas on the Internet. There is no reason anyone has to go fill up at the McDonalds trough.

Internet access is free at the library - as is a mountain of nutrition information. Good food may be slightly harder to prepare - and might even be a little more expensive. But even crappy food needs to be OVEREATEN in order for people to gain weight. Stop making excuses for people who need to make real changes - for them AND their kids.

Yes, there are health issues, but folks, mind your own business. Every life has some risk factors: driving in the rain, playing football, wearing high heels, smoking & drinking, etc. Live your life and I'll live mine, and realize the expense heavy people supposedly add to our nation's health bills is no worse than the expense added by motorcyclists, runners, ballet dancers (have you seen their FEET), pregnant people, and so on.

I write this as someone that has struggled with weight and eating his entire life. Nothing brings out the idiotic repsonses like the issue of obesity and nutrition.

Yes, some people are just more comfortable fat. Fine. Leave them alone. Don't try to preach abou how they need to watch portion control or exercise – unless YOU'VE lost a lot of weight, you have absolutely ZERO experience on how hard it is – to break habits and psychological patterns, to be active when you are overweight, and so on. It's like trying to tell someone to quit smoking that it's as easy as not smoking. Yes, people with weight and eating issue control what they put in to their mouths, but they don't always feel like they do. Giving people grief about their weight and telling them things they already know about it is simply ignorant, self serving, and insulting. Most people that are overweight have lost weight over and over in their lives, only to gain it back and more, and likely know more about weight loss and nutrition that you do. Most overweight people are NOT lazy, as they are constantly told – I've lost over 75 lbs three times in my life, and let me tell you it's work. Many people just give up.

Think about it, this article is about someone who famously had a weight problem, then famously got thin through surgical methods, then gained it all back – this is not someone that hasn't gone to extremes to try to lose weight, and has done in publicly, which kind of brave. But this article is basically her throwing in the towel.

On the flipside, the obese need to cool it with the "as long as I'm happy" or "natural body weight" or "artificial cultural standards" or "it's my metabolism" nonsense, and recognize that they have a choice on whether they are overweight or not, and there is nothing remotely natural, attractive, or healthy about being overweight. Your weight is directly connected to food going in your mouth. If you don't feel like you have control over what goes in your mouth, you are borderline eating disorder. This is not normal, and it's why you are looked down on by people that don't have these issues.

So you're saying I can't critique someone until I've made poor decisions and then fought back from them?

I don't see it. I work hard NOT to make bad decisions. 4 out of 5 meals in my house are cooked by us. We grow a garden. We eat way more vegetables than rice. When I eat out, I stop before I'm full and get the rest of the food to go. Then my co-worker, who's drinking pop out of a 64oz cup at 9 in the morning tells me it's my natural born metabolism.

That's where my criticism comes from.

You would be surprised to read the English literature of countries like India which were until recent years under British occupation. Being able to speak(forget the accent for a second) and write impeccable English was and still is a must to get into the prestigious Indian Civil Services. Just giving you the Indian perspective. Most likely, it will be diabetes that kills her, but heart disease could do her in as well. 200 lbs for her height is going to cut a decade off her life. 300 lbs and she could drop dead any day. There is a reason they would call someone her height at 300 lbs "morbidly obese". Losing weight is hard, but also simple. All she has to do is exercise more, and eat less. Not quite. Once you're not beautiful you're not beautiful. If we are talking beauty of person, that's a different matter. But that's not what people mean when they say "take me as I am". They usually mean "I'm fat and you must accept me that way." This is a fine starting point so long as you really believe it and are content with the fact that very few other people will. Fat people should not be discriminated against, but nor should they expect people to consider them beautiful. Some will of course which is fine, but most will not.

Everybody knows that McDonalds is unhealthy. Period. Everyone knows that being overweight can cause some serious health problems. Everyone knows that exercise, healthy eating and moderation is the way to go. What nobody is saying is that SOME people eat too much because it's an addiction. It's not an excuse, just an explanation. It's the same as being addicted to anything else that's unhealthy. The problem is: you have to have food to live. You don't have to smoke or drink to live. This creates a problem. So while it's easy to say get up and exercise, it's not very easy to do. Also, some people can exercise and eat healthy and STILL be considered "big". Some people just don't care how big they get. Lastly, if you have struggled with weight most or all of your life, it really can consume you. You are aware of every calorie you put into your body and whether or not it's a good calorie, you stress out over it. This can be very debilitating and discouraging. So, if you've been thin all your life or don't have a eating problem, have a care when posting comments about a subject in which you have no experience. That's it. Have a happy Christmas, everybody!

    • Honestly

Gastric bypass surgery is being used to help people who are addicted to food lose weight but they will always gain it back because it doesn't really treat the problem. They have a need to eat whether they are hungry or not. They will always gain weight back after this surgery. Surgically shrinking their stomachs doesn't solve their problem. It is a shame that health insurance is covering this surgery when it doesn't really treat their condition in the long run. I work with someone who ate so much shortly after her surgery she ended up in the hospital. I doubt she was hungry. Several years later she has gained most of her weight back. Our company's insurance plan paid for this. It annoys me because those of us who watch what we eat and exercise are in the long run helping to pay for this as health insurance is getting more and more expensive, our copays, coinsurancs, deductibles and premiums become higher. To me these people need counseling, both phsychlogical and nutritional and they need to exercise. The woman I work with who had this surgery only to gain the weight back eats candy all day and says "you'll never catch this body in the gym"

If being fat doesn't kill her, the long-term consequences of the surgery will – eventually. Iif she lives to be 65, she MIGHT weigh 100 pounds, and be severely malnourished. Rupture her current surgically-altered gut NOW, and it's a horrible picture. The moral behind the article shoud be that the quick and easy fix isn't always the wisest. And SHE, the one who had her surgery BROADCAST, shoud be the first one to come out and say it.
