Obama's 'Mythbusters' episode draws big ratingsSay what you want about President Obama, but the guy can pull in some ratings. The President made a guest appearance on the Wednesday, December 8 episode of the show and more than 2 million people tuned in to check it out. As we noted earlier, President Obama asked the mythbusting duo to solve the legend of Archimedes' solar ray, which was storied to be one serious weapon. Although the team had handled such a fiery mission twice before, this time the President wanted them to examine the myth by considering manpower. With that many people tuning in, the episode landed in the No. 1 spot among cable primetime programs that night among men 25 to 54 and men 18 to 34.

Well plain and simple. Who cares and what's the big deal where he's from or born, so what. Dod'nt even really matter. 2nd ok! He spent the time it took to promote somethng positive on tv, think it was good.he's an out of the box president. He has style. Different than traditional, that's good! To me! He's doing the best that he can considering all he has to work with, the republicans that won't give him the oppourtunity to work his plan. And a very intelligent man, he trys for sure. I think he can get it done but trully it won't be overnite. Gonna take time to undue the mess he inherited.but he's open to negotiate that's a start. Far as the tax breaks the wealthy got theirs, plus they outsource for cheap labor, so they keeping more of it its the middle class that need the break! Actually no more middle class, poor and wealthy! Poor getting poorer, wealty getting richer. Pubs for corporate wealty and dems for less fortunate. If it's up to a pub. They'll cut out evrythng that helps people of less fortuneate.I'm not jobless or broke but I know them pubs, not out for me! Also watch to movie John Q with denzel washington. All folks need healthcare. I'll sacrafice for a plan that works, won't. You.
The show wasn't about Obama. The show was about finding out if it can be done. If they didn't have any schematics at all of how he actually did it, the I think duplicating the effect would be much harder. It's a fact, a flat mirror cannot focus light.. so if it was done with flat mirrors, I doubt the experiment was apples to apples.

I personally dont like obama but if his true intentions were to get children reintegrated back into the books then good for him. Obama is just like a chicken with his head cut off since hes been in office he had a plan the plan crumbled and so did he. HE HAS NO IDEA HOW TO RUN OUR COUNTRIES MILITARY. One day he is bringing home the deployed troops in iraq and afganastan then turns around and sends more troops. Make up your mind you cant boost our soldiers morale to tear it down again. Oh and dont forget cutting military funding when we have soldiers deployed and more training to deploy. The parabolic mirror concept has been done on Mythbusters. They turned a satellite dish into a parabolic mirror, which did focus the sun, about 3 feet in front of the dish. And I'm taking about a dish about 6 feet across. Unless the original dish was mounted on a ship and pulled alongside the enemy, a parabolic mirror doesn't work. Besides, how good were the optics and mirrors back then??

Our president is your savior. If you do not think so, refuse the unemployment benefits and other breaks he is trying to put in place in order for you to survive. No matter who the President is you will always have a reason to complain regardless of what good he (or she) is doing! If only one child decides to become an engineer after watching this episode with Obama & the Mythbusters team, then it was worth every second of his time.
Maybe instead of complaining about the current President, you should get a proper education yourself to become the next President of the United States of America. Then you will see first hand how difficult the job really is. Especially when your trying to fix all the screw ups the previous President left for you to clean up!

The problem in our society is not just centered in Washington. The division of Americans between party lines is the greatest sucess to keeping the US from being an premeire superpower. Big mythbuster fans, glad when they get big ratings. They do an excellent job of making science cool, for both children and adults! I also think it's great that the elected leader of our country will take time to participate in activities like this. I don't see how it could be portrayed as negative, anyone encouraging the quest for knowledge should be applauded; we could all use more knowledge and appreciation for science! Good job to all involved with this show!!!
I can't help but laugh at all of these Obama haters. It's funny that it took Bush 8 years to run our economy into the ground (and did nothing to fix it), but we won't even give Obama 4 years to try to fix it. The ignorance of some people is amazing. The problem I see here is the fact that we are so divided on stupidity and minor issues is the reason this country is falling to common idiocracy. Our inability to come together and realize the major issues facing us as a country has led to further downfall as the leading edge to creating a poor and dumb down America. The problems are very simple when broken down its not about age and considering those under the age 0f 30 to be the dumbest voters in this country or about race or background of the president. The matter of the fact is that he is president and there is no going back so the time is to move forward and to adjust our focus on the problems of now and those too come. First our national deficit is far too high and will eventually come down on us in the form of taxes whether we do tax breaks or not we will lose other portions of benefits or have to pay a different tax to settle this debt issue, things that we will find more reasons so separate on due to belief or ideas we have. Second, we need to consider the jobless rates the plans that were used to create jobs are short term and do not focus on long term needs and the reason of that is to ensure political affiliation we fix short term we get votes however the need is to forget politics and focus on the American people who are struggling to survive with the ever growing prices of the market. Third, the focus was on the banks who were saved by us the American people or tax paying dollars kept them alive and now they are focusing on taking homes away again after they got their money and paid off their ceo's. Fourth, is how to unite a nation under the basic philosophies and principles the country was built upon. His focus on education I see yes is a good thing is it better to go on a tv show and push this idea I personally say no the idea needed to focus on going to schools and understand the classroom environment and push the education focus there. Congress is filled by the largest groups of idiots I could ever consider due to the fact that they are so set on political votes rather than the people who voted for them in the first place. The answers are never easy but the truth is we need to cut back spending and focus on the people here to strengthen or own markets and economy and let the rest of the world focus on their own situations. We are supposed to be the best country in the world and the leaders in that respect and we are sadly failing in the great divide we have ourselves in. The need to come together as a country and let the government know we want answers now and until they give answers they do not deserve their long vacation breaks every year while we are starving and losing our homes on a daily basis. We want solutions that take care of those truly affected and not those who are rich and store the money to not be used for years to come. The rich may pay a good majority of taxes but without us the country would fail we are the heart, soul, and backbone to the entire operation of the country. We provide the defense, we provide the economy, and we provide the most workers in this country and spend our money more than the rich. Forget about politics and this sad quibbling we have between us because I have I am a republican, I am also 24 years old the group in which has been stated over and over here that is dumb and full of idiots who shouldn't vote yet I am more realistic than most of these bs comments left here. I am also a soldier who is deploying soon and I love this country and all of the people in this room for being involved and proactive yet it saddens me that we gripe of the little things rather than deal with the real problems ahead. The solutions are not in tax breaks and they are not in giving petty little 600 dollar checks to every American it is in utilizing the means we have to initiate new revenue to push the economy in the mode of spending a la the American people not the government therefore increasing revenue in business and pushing the need to increase the number of employees to handle the increase in demand. The need to get the homeless off the streets and put their tails to work and getting rid of long term unemployment benefits. The unemployment benefits are so lucrative to many that they have no urge to find a job when they can sit and get paid more than they would to work. The ability to take care of our veterans since they are not taken care of properly and the need to quit spending as the government and save to pay the deficit off. I may not know every detail in how to do this as I seek knowledge everyday to learn how to help solve by doing my part but I can tell you I am more willing to look for ways to give input rather than argue over petty crap and quibble over nonsense. If you don't like what I have to say so be it but if you do then help each other and do your part in coming up with ways to solve this ongoing problem.

Okay, we all know education is very important; my wife is a high school math teacher, and I've taught programming and various PC applications and ops, but the myth we have to bust with Obama is that he's even close to qualified to be in the office of president. Let's hope we can survive the next two years with this inexperienced, dangerous socialist and still have a representative republic that works for the people.

The Myth Busters are great. I only wish they could be a viable program and tackle some of the most pervasive myths - namely religion. For example, I'd like to see them tackle the Catholic myth that bread administered by a priest becomes flesh when a person eats it. Of the Mormon myth that ancient Americans were Hebrews. Or the Jewish myth that the world was once covered by a universal flood.

I am so glad to see a president who isn't afraid to go on a national television show, and show his interests. He was on the View, and it was excellent to watch. He is on Mythbusters now! George W. Bush was a good president. The way he handeled the aftermath of 9/11 was heroic and began counter-attacks on Al Q. in Afghanistan. 75% of the country approved, all of congress authorized military action eventhough he didn't need it. He handeled Saddam Husien as diplomatically as he could. That madman was threatening the entire Middle East region. Having served in the middle east, I know that as fact. BUSH ALSO WENT TO THE united Nations, our allies before any shot was fired at Iraq. He gave countless warnings to Saddam and so did the rest of the world. Saddam violated no fly zones, time and time again. I know this will start a firestorm of WMD's responses from you Liberals. In the 1980's, Iraq was at war with Iran. One million people lost their lives, USA armed and sold WMD's to Iraq. Iran was the bigger threat, still is today.

This begs to question: if a different administration were in the White House, which shows would its President or First Lady appear in? Would John McCain appear on a History Channel special on the Vietnam War? How about Hillary Clinton advocating for children and families? Could either Mitt Romney or Mick Huckabee attract viewers by guest appearing on either CTN (Christian Television Network) or a televised Sunday Mass? Would Sarah Palin and family draw in ratings with an guest appearence on 'Deadliest Catch'?
CNN is a disgrace to journalism. CNN is the most biased "news" network in the world. Not even Fox News omits facts or censors like CNN.
The series averages 2.3 million viewers per episode with it's highest rated episodes more then doubling that figure. The ratings for the episode mentioned here (co-starring Obama) were a little below average if anything. The ratings are definitely nothing to tout as a success.

How sad our President stooped to appear on one of the most illegitimate broadcasts on television today! "Mythbusters," and the actors on it, promote themselves as being credible scientists. Because they cannot recreate a situation (e.g., risks of using cellular phones while pumping gasoline), they declare such things to be "myths." They choose to not be "confused with the facts" gleaned from numerous incident investigations of professionals.
"Mythbusters" is just another in a long line of irresponsible, mind-numbing television that should be sent down the road. The two freaks of nature who "host" this program have zero credibility in the world of thinking human beings.
I am disappointed our President would tarnish his already deeply stained reputation by lending credence to a couple of freakish beings who should be anywhere but in the public eye!
It truely baffles me, how imature most people are. First off, if you voted for Obama or not, he is our president, and you should repect the man for that. You think it is easy doing a job that he is doing? Do you honestly think you could do better? I doubt it. He is doing a good job, but the congress and senate will not allow him to succeed. Too many problems will arise if he succeeds in their eyes. (like they may have to start actually working and pulling their own weigth)
Next you can be religious and believe in science. I am a good Christian and I am a science teacher. They can go hand and hand. Education is extremely important, we are falling further and further behind the curve everyday. Anyone who thinks Obama is a lousy president has a very poor memory, and even worse powers of observation (or perhaps intelligence)? I am someone who was around when Kennedy was president and I must say it is difficult to recall having a president this intelligent, thoughtful and hardworking. Clinton was certainly intelligent but had his problems and sometimes let other issues come ahead of what should have been his prime concern: the country and its citizens. Obama is wonderful and I am so glad to see there are a good number of people here who appreciate it. Too many think someone strong is someone loud, aggressive and imbued with qualities better associated with a bully than with a courageous person. This president is someone we should be grateful to have in office. And by the way, Kennedy was indeed charismatic, but so many of his wonderful speeches (and even his book) were not actually written by him but for the most part by Ted Sorenson.

There were thousands of people complaining about ending outsourcing including myself. What chance in Hades do you give the Republicans of making outsourcing illegal? I would support lowering the manufacturing tax from 30% to ±5%, but I still think that companies that ship jobs overseas should pay more taxes since they do so in order to avoid paying that pesky minimum wage. I'm poor and get free grants for school as well as food stamps. I'm a year away from my degree. I really don't see where there is a problem with this. President Obama has always looked for "teachable moments" to promote his programs (and there is nothing ojectionable about this one), and we should all know by now that he is drawn to a camera like a moth to a porch light. The President is just using some free advertising time to promote education (at least it would have been free if we didn't have to fly him there in Air Force One – but that's just the way it works) and the US needs to take advantage of all the free stuff it can get right now. I did have a problem with him blowing off the Boy Scouts to go on "The View", but I don't think he really cares about what I think.
All you people arguing about whether the left or the right is best need to get a clue. If Nancy and Harry had their way, we all would make $100 an hour, but we'd pay $96 of it in taxes. If the Republicans had their way, we wouldn't pay any taxes, but we'd only make $4 an hour. Either way we only get $4 an hour! Until a party emerges that actually cares about the middle classes interests instead of just their votes, keeping power separated between the two parties is the only way the middle class can exist. Would Sarah Palin and family draw in ratings with an guest appearence on 'Deadliest Catch'?

You have twisted some facts. A Democratic congress in 2008 approved the bank bailout submitted by GOP Pres. Bush. Additionally, the GOP candidate for prez...McCain...stopped his campaign to rush back to DC and vote yes on the bill. After Obama was inaguarated he submitted the 700 billion stimulus bill to a Democratic congress which approved that bill AND that some GOP reps also cast a yea vote on. And the money from this bill did NOT go to big business. It went to state govts to keep firefighters, police, etc on the job and also reduced your taxes. One of the President's spending bills ( the auto bail out) is almost paid off and will make a profit, so you need to subtract that out of the deficit. Well Chad... I see another one of your well written statements of the trash that the 'Tea Party' likes to recycle. I was all for them in the beginning... until they apparently started mixing in something extra with their tea... Anyways, if you actually breakdown yearly spending you will see that the debt has been steadily going up for about 30 years now. While there have been times of surpluses in the budget, most of the time the debt has climbed. About 9 years ago a man named George W Bush decided that with two wars he wanted to fight (which by the way they will never end, they have declared a holy war on us – they plan on fighting for the rest of their lives) and that he also wanted to use an outdated method of sparking the economy called the trickle down effect. It didn't work. Couple that with how the banks decided to play with out future unscruplously and you have a recipe for a true disaster called our National Debt. Now it is actually a fact that while many jobs have been lost during Obama's presidency a majority happened in his first few months in office. And since it can take several months to have a policy put in place and start to work he is still getting blamed for something he had no control over. It's like blaming Bush for Katrina. He didn't make the storm happen, all he could do is control his response to it (which that is another debate).
The part that gets me is that you have decided to judge his policies rather prematurely. It took over a decade for the meltdown to happen, it's going to take long time to fix and to believe that there is some sort of magical cure all for this situation means you are either smoking something or live in a dreamland. And actually the previous commenter that mentioned Hoover even has some of his facts wrong. He actually put several policies in place that prevented the Great Depression from being worse. And the actual causes of the depression were a result of the previous administration's policies. He did what he could to stop it but people still believe he caused the depression since it happened under his presidency.

It's a national initiative to get American children back on top of those disciplines as the US is slipping further behind other countries – yes, we're becoming dumber. No president is perfect, I don't expect you to drool over Obama. Have some respect, an obivious majority of your fellow citizens voted for him. He's trying his best. At least he's using multimedia resources to attempt to grab our future generations attention. Kids should become interested in science and math. Work hard. So we can be leaders. But right now, our students are lacking 21st centurry skills that we are going to need.
If you weren't so busy watching Glenn Beck and buying into Republican pandering of morons and loonies, you'd realize that our country is quickly falling behind in all aspects of education–math, science, and reading. This means we will fall behind in innovation, something that has driven ALL aspects of this country and made us the great country we are today. Well, it's not like Obama was just sitting around reading stories to school children while planes were being flown into The Twin Towers. That must have been another President having some priorities out of order. Figureheads have to be seen doing many things that demonstrate the importance of health, education and tradition, etc. All of these things together make up the mesh of American Society and as a whole, is as important a priority as any of the top ten.
When a leader makes special appearances, attends a meeting, entertains foreign Diplomats, goes to a funeral, and so forth, the country does not come to a screeching halt. In fact, you can be quite certain, there is an army of people working 24/7 on, well , pretty much EVERYTHING. The notion that high priority issues get put on the back burner whenever The President is, basically, making a Public Service Announcement, is silly.

If you actually watched the episode, Obama was promoting science interest in young kids of the future. The episode used school children to help bust the myth. Obama was on air for no more than five minutes. I'm sure it didn't use up a lot of his time.

MCO39, do you have a link to the experiment you mentioned in Greece? The myth busters did indeed use flat mirrors but angled them such that the overall effect would be a parabolic mirror.

Bob, the idea is to angle a series of parabolic mirrors rather than a series of flat mirrors. This allows you to take advantage of the full intensity of each mirror. A similar concept is used in the VLA:

I think the President being on a science TV show to promote science is a good thing no matter who's in office, Republican or Democrat. I remember President Regan doing something similar when I was younger (appearing on an educational type program to promote learning) and it inspired me.

MCO39, parabolic mirrors only focus light at one distance. So the enemy fleet would have to sit at the right distance. Archimedes did not have access to modern day mirrors so he would need a lot more reflectors to make it work then we would.
