Kathy Griffin booed for Bristol Palin jokeAfter defending her mother to Margaret Cho, Bristol Palin now has fighting words for Kathy Griffin. While hosting the December 3 VH1 "Divas Salute the Troops" concert, the 50-year-old comedian took a jab at Palin, saying that the former "Dancing With the Stars" competitor "is the only contestant in the history of the show to actually gain weight ... She gained, like, 30 pounds a week. I swear to God, it was fantastic. She's like the white Precious." The crowd booed Griffin - and clearly, they weren't the only ones who failed to find the humor in her wisecracks. In a statement to Fox News, 20-year-old Palin said, "The audience's reaction to this ‘comedian’ spoke volumes, and the decent people I know would probably have booed her, too. I hope people didn't have to pay money to hear her negativity and criticisms.” As Marquee previously reported, Griffin's fellow comic Cho also had harsh words for Palin, alleging that Sarah Palin forced her daughter to do "DWTS" so the public would forget Bristol's notoriety as a teen mom and the former governor of Alaska would gain fans if she runs for president in 2012. Bristol has denied those claims. |
While KG should hardly be casting dispersions about someone's looks, I find the entire Palin clan to be the most repulsive, self-involved, moronic cast of fools ever put upon the earth. Why they are still news is beyond reason? It's frightening to me to think that people actually could think of Sarah as a possible candidate. She's not qualified to be anything other than contestant in a GILF pageant.

While I have never been a fan of either woman, and can say I have never watched a single episode of DWTS what amazes me is the lack of rage over her comment to go ahead and boo here " she knows WAR IS HELL". How could she possibly have a clue as to what war is like. Griffin is right, Bristol Palin did look significantly chunkier at the end of the DWTS season. I remarked about it too, when I watched the finale..."is it me, or did she actually GAIN weight on this show?"
Wow. I know many of these comedians are liberals. But some of the comments in December have been crossing the line from comedy into downright hate. Cho, Griffin, Jon Stewart on the Daily show and more ... I'm not sure if they can't stand how people have rejected Obama and voted for conservative candidates over liberal. Or maybe they are so disillusioned with Obama themselves that they have to blame someone. While they always made fun of conservative values before, now they've gone hostile towards such beliefs and anything not fitting in their tiny view of the world.

I think Kathy is absolutely right. I only watched one of the DWTS shows at the end but the girl had a double chin. I thought all that dancing was supposed to make you LOSE weight. I'm not sure what she was eating but it must have been A LOT. By appearing on DWTS, Bristol Palin placed herself in the spotlight, and is now getting the attention of a lot of people, and it's not all good. By paying attention to so many who've gone the road before her, she should have known what was coming. And furthermore, can you honestly say she didn't use being the child of Sarah Palin to try to attain her own sort of celebrity? None of us can pick and choose what is said about us, or by whom. We all have to deal with nasty remarks, and if any of the rest of us entered the world of celebrity, we'd be dealing with it on the same public level we willingly chose to place ourselves in.

The article is clearly written by someone who doesn't like Kathy Griffin, yet she makes a very handsome living by being controversial and causing a stir. Honestly... don't you guys get it? I recall she was "booed" at another concert a year or two ago and when I saw the show on television, the audience was responding by a big groan, not a boo and at the end, Kathy had a standing ovation. Methinks this is the case here. Let's be totally honest here... Bristol had no business being in "Dancing with the Stars"... she edged out Brandi who was clearly a heck of a better dancer than Bristol and was far more attractive. Bristol would be a big fat zero if her mother wasn't such a celebrity. Bristol is also not a "star".. she is a new figure. She did okay on the show and she gave it her best, but she has the personality of a hamster and her dancing would have been zero without her talented and energetic dance partner. Like Kathy I am sick to pieces of the Palins. The celebration of the dull and lifeless is just a fad and Kathy and Cho will continue to make fun of it and get the laughs.... and groans and continue to laugh all the way to the bank.

I want to thank you for your support. Given that 1/2 of Americans are overweight, I can see why you defend me. However, the weight I have gained is not from being like you big folk. I'm pregnant with my 2nd child. My mother contacted Heidi Fleiss in Nevada who is working on an all-male brothel. Mother bought out the brothel for a night so that I may conceive a 2nd child. It was a special night. After a couple rounds of antibiotics post-brothel night, I found out I was pregnant. I am working hard to narrow down the father (either Larry or Buck), but mother has indicated to me that she may just purchase a "proper" male whom I can use as the father for media purposes. Btw, my "dancing" on DWTS was the best I could do given that I haven't been able to properly walk since the magical night at the stud ranch. Also, I want everyone to know my mother is mentally fragile at this moment. Her meds aren't alleviating much of her chronic diarrhea these days...so she is a bit irritable. Every comedian has "their" schtick. Some are more story tellers (Gabriel Iglesias) or a general comedian (Bill Cosby, Jerry Seinfeld, Jeff Foxworthy), make fun of themselves (Joan Rivers, the late Rodney Dangerfield) while others run into the candid/often crude humor (late George Carlin, has-been Andrew Dice Clay). Each finds their own "niche" and has some following. Long ago, I found little of Kathy's routines funny as she makes her attacks more personal. However, the next person may find them humorous...Until more folks tune her out – she'll linger around, though I am surprised she's lasted as long as she has.

First of all, I don't like Kathy at all, but that joke was funny as hell! My friends and I all agreed that she got bigger too. Some thought she might even be pregnant again. I applaud Bristol for going on DWTS and trying to help her mom's 2012 prez bid like a good daughter should. With that said, when you enter the world of celebrity you'd better have thick skin, especially when you lack any talent like Bristol. She's just the daughter of a political popstar/punchline. Secondly, the troops only supported Bristol because they want to sleep with her, hello? She's cute and, you know, isn't as innocent as mommy thought she was. Lastly, it's comedy people! They pick on everyone, alive and dead. Take the stick out already. Just be glad Sam Kinison is still alive to comment about your "precious" Palins! Bristol, call me! xoxo

I had the pleasure of attending the Divas Salutes the Troops – thank you ladies for a great show. As I recall, the booing was aimed more at the Palin photo shown on the big screens to the sides of the stage than Ms. Griffin's 'jokes'.

I'm getting so tired of comedians believing we care about their political opinions. I could care less what Griffin thinks about Palin. I think it's a sign that some comedians really don't have anything funny to say, or that they can't come up with good material, so they try to make attacking others funny. I'm not necessarily a Palin fan, but I'm not a Griffin fan either. Griffin's mediocre at best, and has struggled in her profession for years. The strange part is that comedians like Griffin actually believe there's a big audience for their "attacking the conservatives" style. People see through it. It's kind of pathetic. I'm embarrassed for Griffin – you know – the kind of embarrassed where you wish the person could see themselves but they don't, and they go on and on making a fool of themselves? It makes you cringe.

There are lines of decency with the public, and making weight jokes about a 20 year old girl who was clearly trying her best on DWTS crossed those lines. When Bristol put herself out there, she allowed herself to be fair game for commentary – any commentary. While I watched, I wondered 1) how she felt about her weekly placement (so obvious popularity trumped talent) 2) how it seemed hypocritical after denouncing Levi's time in the spotlight 3) why Sarah chose book signing over attending Bristol's finale, and 4) who was watching her child. I believe Bristol's agreeing to participate had more to do with her being a pawn to her mother's ambitions.

It is fair game to be "poked at" by comedians if you are famous. It reminds me of sitting in the front row of a live comedy club. Don't sit there if you don't want to be picked on. I didn't find Kathy Griffin's joke to be particularly funny, it was worth barely a chuckle. Bristol Palin needs to have a thicker skin if she seeks to be in the public eye, as she did with her gig on DWTS. Julia Roberts would have responded with a sweet smile and said, "no comment."

I actually noticed that Bristol Palin did not lose weight during DWTS. We've seen several somewhat chunky people take it off, such as Joey Fatone. But I don't notice that Margaret Cho lost any weight, either, and Griffin didn't pick on her.
Bristol should never have been on the show–and certainly should not have lasted as long as she did, which was arranged by a voting bloc supporting her mother–but making her the butt of a joke (no pun intended) about her appearance is tasteless. It's bullying, pure and simple.

I've spent years trying to get my step daughter over an eating disorder and poor body image that Hollywood, her friends and her mother caused. Yes she worked hard at her dance skills, you can see the difference over the weeks. But, her performances were wooden? During her performances she looked as if she was having a root canal with Craftsman power tools. Her partner should have been Steeven Segal or Billy off of Melrose Place. Actually this was her beauty contest. The "bigot banner/sash" was passed from Anita Bryant to Sarah Palin, and now Sarah can pass the banner to Bristol. It is their "god given right" to be bigots. Actually it is their "god encouraged right" to be intolerant and critical since the bible is the "word of god."

My grandfather met my grandmother the love of his life on December 7th, 1941. When he met her he said the first thing he remembered and always will is how pretty she was and her smile! He was on liberty from the Long Beach Naval shipyards where he was at the time serving in the U.S. Navy. My grandmother's family whom he was visiting said to him, "Did you hear Pearl Harbor was just attacked?" At that point the radio spit out the message that all naval personnel were required to return to their assigned places. My grandfather went back did his duty in the navy, got out married that girl of his dreams with that great smile and together they had great kids and great grandkids and were married for over 50 years. I will always remember the story of how my grandfather met my grandmother on the day Pearl Harbor was attacked and how he like thousands of others just like him faced and dealt with December 7th, 1941!

Not sure why cracking jokes about a public figure who is an adult is off-limits. It just wasn't funny. I saw a comedian at a live show and he was cracking on Levi Johnson's Baby Mama. There was as guy in the audience with a sweatshirt with the Univ of Oklahoma logo and the comedian asked him if he had attended OU (as it is commonly referred to ). The guy said yes, he graduated from OU. Then the comedian asked him if he'd run into Bristol Palin at OU and before the guy could answer the comedian said "stupid me – Bristol didn't go to OU she went to Ho U". Everyone in the audience was just rolling with laughter. PS If you don't get the joke find someone who is hipper than you (which means just about everyone else) and ask them to define the word "ho" for you.

Although I was not a regular viewer of DWTS, when I tuned in, I was surprised that unlike all of the so-called "overrweight" contestants, Bristol remained the only one who seemed to gain pounds during her appearance on the show. Marie Osmond comes to mind as someone who made the attempt (successfully) to drop weight during her stint on the show.

For Bristol it was a nice income, and she didn't take pains to work hard enough because she understood that she would never make it to the final. It's actually funny that exhausting exercise makes a person gain weight, but men would never appreciate a joke about a woman's weight gain. That's the only reason why they booed.

If you go voluntarily onto the public stage, then expect and learn to handle criticism as well as praise, especially if you have little to offer. There is no "right to be a success". Only to be a hope to be reported honestly, just as in normal life. But you should very very appreciative and humble for opportunities offered that really should have gone to far more deserving people. Without your Mother's publicity, you would never have had this break.
