'Sarah Palin's Alaska' draws big ratings

Almost 5 million viewers tuned in to the Sunday night premiere of “Sarah Palin’s Alaska.”

TLC announced that the début episode of the new show drew 4.96 million total viewers, making it the No. 1 program launch in TLC history among households, besting the “What Not to Wear” series launch in 2003. The new show features a glimpse into Palin’s life in her home state and is scheduled to initially run for eight weeks.

While "Palin's" ratings were big, last year's break-up announcement on TLC's “Jon and Kate Plus Eight” continues to reign as one of the network’s biggest draws to date, with more than 10 million viewers.

I don't want her to run, but she was/is more qualified than Obama.
Obama won because of Bush and the tide of the country.
I only hope the country has opened their eyes and will stop the government from taxing and spending our money.

I think there is a total political undertone to this 8 week series. Whereas it will not sway my future vote one way or another, I am interested in seeing more Alaska. What a beautiful state. I'm not going to insult anyones intelligence on the show, but I will admit, I turned the volume down....

Just because someone shares your same values or has a nice family, doesn't mean that they are qualified to run a state or country. This is just a show, but you'd have to be naive to not acknowledge her constant posturing towards a run for the presidency. Self-promotion is not a trustworthy value.

I don't want to give her too much credit. It is political strategy that decides who is electible. Popularity has trumped qualifications for a long time now. I don't know if any candidate has been even remotely qualified for quite some time.

I really liked the show and saw another side of Sarah Palin, which I liked. I also learned a little more about Todd, family and the beautiful state of Alaska. Can't wait unitl next weeks show.. I am beginning to change my opinion of Sarah and hope that she will really study politics and the problems of the United States and international concerns. The next two years of 'hard' studying as mentioned.., I could reconsider and take a closer look at Sarah Palin and her views, opinions and how she would 'focus' on helping all americans' and the international community. Yes.., I would give Sarah another look. You bet ! Mike in Montana

When I first heard this series was coming out, I wrote to discovery and told them that I would not only not watch it (and I haven't) but that I will cease watching all discovery channel programming until she gets cancelled. If discovery wants to be known as the channel that promotes ecological awareness, putting someone on their channel who likes to kill wolves from a helicopter isn't the way to send that message.

For those of you watching to see how unintelligent the woman is – you should know that by now and all you're doing is helping her keep the gig.

As a moderate Republican, I am appalled by Sarah Palin. She has done more harm to our party than Nixon did in the 70's. She is the reason we lost the election in 2008 and will lose again in 2012 if she is nominated. Those of us who want a fiscally stable country while addressing the big picture of social issures must ban together and get this woman out of any power position in the Republican Party. Didn't watch and don't plan to. In fact, I am not watching any TLC programs any longer because they chose to further Palin's influence on this country by giving her this show.

She is a very smart woman and if it came between her and Obama, I would vote for her. The woman has values... moral values which is something this country definetely needs. I felt jealous a bit, because we lived in Anchorage for a year and it is the most beautiful state I have ever been in. Would love to move back there.Compared to Oklahoma, it's Alaska hands down.

People with brains have the right to judge her. Educated people (Palin calls them elitists) have the right to judge her. People who behave ethically have the right to judge her. People who deal in facts have the right to judge her. The American people have heard firsthand what comes out of her mouth and that is nothing of substance.

This woman is actually about as dumb as you can get, just go do some research and you will see she constantly dramatizes events and subjects that she has no clue about.

Half her speeches are filled with propaganda and b.s. exaggerations. It's ludicrous that anyone will even interview this idiot anymore. Just watch her show, half of what she says and does is just drama, no substance at all.

As a recovering republican who is liberal, I find your stereotypical comments and snide remarks about “us libs” so, well, fox newsish. It’s because John McCain threw Sarah Palin in as his running mate, not because she was qualified, mind you, but because he wanted to grab women voters, that we can’t stand her. I think you will also find that libs and others can’t stand Sarah because she is and as a reality starlet will continue to be grossly unqualified to lead a country. Period. Perhaps had old man McCain put someone qualified as his running mate he would currently be running the country. Thankfully, he’s not and if there is any form of god existing, Sarah Palin won’t ever be either. Give me a decent republican, give me a decent democrat, I’ll vote based on information, not party line affiliation.

@Huffygirl- I really just want to say that while you have had the opportunity over and over again to make an intelligent argument, all you can consistently spew forth is "derp". I don't think you sound funny or amusing and I'm sure that intelligent dems and those republicans who also love palin as much as you would agree. The state of Alaska is very green and beautiful, but this is no thanks to sara palin. It had its pristine beauty before her parents brought the family there from the lower 48, and it will be beautiful long after she, and the rest of us are long gone. What I was stunned about and no one seemed to have focused on (even the pundits) was the fact that she had her young children in that boat and THEY could have been killed and maimed by the wild bears.I don't know how close her small canoe was to the bears (which looked awfully close), but even if the boat was a fair amount of distance from the bears, the bears showed that they were extremely avid and flexible swimmers and could have easily overtaken that boat had they chosen to, putting her children in danger. It seems to me that if she is so careless with her own children's lives, she would have far less with the American public's safety, should she be successful in her political endeavors. The second stunner was climbing up a steep hill or mountain with her small child. She was barely climbing and showed physical strain trying to get up the hill. While in back of her was the child trying to keep up with "mama grizzly." The real bears showed more concern and care for their cubs than she did, which really did not surprise me, as she has put her career first over her children for years. She is not true to those family values that the Republican women that I know and have known share. She is a greedy, opportunistic, power driven women who cares little for her family, but chases the almighty dollar at the risk of her own children's lives. Her thirty pieces of silver is the millions she expects to receive from TLC. Media is saying that her show was the highest rated in TL C's history and I heard the highest rated show on TLC during its first week was "John and Kate plus eight." Which is true? I know I won't be watching again, because as far as reality shows go, this is the farthest thing from "reality" than anything on the air, to date. Palin orchestrated every scene, the script and entire production and turned the show into a ill conceived campaign "get to know me." We know her no better now than before. Which tells me and America, that she has a lot to hide. And I for one do not want to "buy a pig in a poke" on election day.

Well Sarah is a big fan of freedom and she has certainly found her ticket. She never cared about being vice president, and her house would come crumbling down if she became president. That doesnt mean she wont run. If not this time, the next time. In the 2010 presidential race she was the big winner. She got on TV, made lots of fans, selected her target market and gave them what they want. Now it's time to rake in the coin. I would love to see her 2010 tax return. She is probably booked for the next year with a boatful of opportunities begging to be next. She sold a book, had a very successful fundraising tour, is a star on Saturday Night Live, and now she has her own show. And with HD TV justcoming into vogue beautiful shots of the magnificently beautiful state of Alaska will be on everyone's TV screen, no matter what your political persuasion. Ironically, a lot of conservationists (read: environmentalist, or "tree hugger") will love this show if just for the visuals. Sarah wins and now is the payday. She will make enough money in the next year (and she is, despite her politics, smart enough to know what to do with it) to set the Palins up till about the 25th century. "Palin" is the new fashion. I cant wait to see the commercials with Todd selling Levis and Bristol hawking handbags (with that nice inside pocket for the .38). Sarah is no longer a person, she is a culture and an industry. She has found the American dream, and you are paying for it.

    Sarah Palin,

Does not deserve to have a show or speak publicly. She is a failure when it comes to politics and the only thing she is good for is getting paid to speak at events to stick money in her pocket. She pounces on the "liberal" media and she is the one throwing her and her family into the mainstream media. She is a pathetic excuse of a woman to symbolize success in politics, she is a prime example of the circus American politics. Every country has there own issues, but seriously I do not want someone who is making money off there one hit wonder nomination at VP running my country. I blame John McCain and his campaign group for this B.S. wanna be politician. As a Vet who served this country during and after 9/11 I would be insulted having this idiot running my country! I don't care whether you are Democrat or Republican, to be known in your home state for being highly negative toward saving wildlife and preserving our natural resources, and then to get a deal to pretend you ARE supporting that wildlife and preservation of our natural resources is wrong. Tell those wolves that you and your buddies shot from the helicopters how supportive you are of wildlife, Sarah! One line that was used OVER and OVER again in the commercials touting this show was that she preferred being out in the wild than in a stuffy political office. I agree, Sarah - I would prefer you there, too! But I don't think that you or your family should benefit financially as long as your state is still granting more rights to trophy hunters than to wolves!

      @elliottone,

It is HATERS, not hatters. I doubt anyone writing in makes hats for a living. As to why we are commenting on Ms Palin and her family...well, I've seen your name attached to a bunch of comments personally slamming our current President. Do YOU know HIM? If not, then let us have OUR say, as well. Ms Palin (and by default, her family) put themselves out there for negative comments by deciding to make their lives public, especially while making money off of it - and they are making a bundle off of TLC! In addition, as Governor of Alaska, Sarah Palin repeatedly tried to overturn conservation efforts for wildlife, and open vast ranges of undeveloped land to mineral and timber rights without controls. I think that if she had succeeded, some of those beautiful vistas shown in the show would have been wiped out. I won't watch the show because she is a hypocrite - not because of her political affiliation.

As a recovering republican who is liberal, I find your stereotypical comments and snide remarks about "us libs" so, well, fox newsish. It's because John McCain threw Sarah Palin in as his running mate, not because she was qualified, mind you, but because he wanted to grab women voters, that we can't stand her. I think you will also find that libs and others can't stand Sarah because she is and as a reality starlet will continue to be grossly unqualified to lead a country. Period. Perhaps had old man McCain put someone qualified as his running mate he would currently be running the country. Thankfully, he's not and if there is any form of god existing, Sarah Palin won't ever be either. Give me a decent republican, give me a decent democrat, I'll vote based on information, not party line affiliation.

Thank you, Moe . The very point that no one has seemed to listen to since this man came upon the scene. Not only is he biracial, but his ancestry on his mother's side is 100% American blueblood from families that ran this country even before it was a country. Check his genealogy out. He is no more representative of the typical African American or other group of American than is Howdy Doody. Probably less than old HD...

Any quiter does not impress me no matter what your party is. To make the media as an excuse for quiting as Governor of Alaska when the state was going through hard times was lame. What happens when she gets into a real crisis and even greater media scrutiny as president? Abandon the nation too?

She will be protected better from media as the president ... At least her family will ... Cartoons & such that make fun of her down-syndrome child are horrid ... I don't blame her for protecting them ... She did a great job while she was Govener and I'd be so excited if she was president ... She has brains & action ... And she LoVES America ... Not Same I can say for Obama .. Who still won't release his Birth Certificate! If he would just show it .. It would not be a big deal!

Ya'know? The editing device supplied by CNN is not very condusive to the use of a spell-checker or a grammer checker. It falls upon an individual's ability to be accurate and efficient in the knowledge of the English language when tendering an opinion or a reply. However, I would have to agree with one of the previous posters. The correct use of punctuation and capitalization is as an important element of communication as spelliing or grammer.

However, civility over rudeness in communications is always be more readily accepted. Rudeness only leads to retaliatory rudeness, and is the heart of the reason that the country is so polarized. Please, everyone, read, understand, and acknowledge the content of the Terms of Service laid down by CNN, and use the "Report Abuse" response more frequently. It is only when CNN gets the message that these forums need more pre-screening that some of the more flagrant abuse will be eliminated. My rambling is somewhat off topic, as some pundits may be more than willing to report as a violation to CNN.

Therefore, to bring the focus back the SPA reality show I must say that, as a onetime resident of the state of Alaska, I am sure that the representation of that state is, in every way, accurate. I just wish they could have found a less polarizing and more articulate spokesperson. I certainly hope that the show has a future segment that deals with the rampant depression in the populace as the "Land of the Midnight Sun" traverses into the "Land of the Midday Darkness". If the primary subject revolves around the perona of the star then may not maintain such a high viewer rating.

See? Negative comments can be presented with civility.

She quit because the dozens, if not hundreds of frivolous ethics lawsuits that came her way starting during the election season (all of which I believe were thrown out as soon as they came in but still required her time and resources) took a huge amount of time away from her actually performing her duties as a governor. If someone was dragging you into the courtroom every two minutes for B.S. you'd be hard-pressed to stay in your job too.

This show fits right into what is wrong with America. Hopefully enough people will see this and judge for themselves what this woman is, a shameless self promoter who is dumber than 2 buckets of hair. Unfortunately the only people that will tune into this going forward are in her base. A bunch of lower middle class white wage earners who think that the billionaires who are directing the Tea baggers are on their side. Once they lose their jobs and find out that the people they voted in won't extend their unemployment benefits, will raise the taxes that Obama just lowered, and will try to take away the healthcare benefits that they have, maybe they will then think about who best represents them. Probably not, because the real reason the Tea Party formed is because they don't want a Black man running the country.
