Kanye West cancels 'Today' performance

After firing off critical tweets of the “Today” show earlier this week, Kanye West announced Friday via Twitter that he won’t be performing on the NBC program on November 26, as was previously planned. (Update, 1:13 p.m.: A representative for "Today" confirmed to CNN that West has canceled his concert.)

“I’m not performing on the Today Show for obvious reasons,” West tweeted, then going on to say how happy he was that “the world got to see just a small piece of ‘the set up.’”

What West refers to as “the set up” are the elements of his pre-taped interview with Matt Lauer that caused him to launch into a Twitter rant this week. “Today” aired the video on Thursday.

The topic of discussion during the interview was to be the relationship between West and former President George W. Bush and his upcoming album, but things got sour when the artist felt like he was being attacked.

After responding to Lauer’s question of whether or not West regrets uttering that infamous phrase, “George Bush doesn’t care about black people,” during a telethon for Hurricane Katrina, Lauer asked West to take a look at the video clip of Bush reacting to the statement in a "Today" interview.

“Don’t even listen this time. Just look at his face when he’s commenting about you, just look at him,” Lauer told West. “This is the most emotional he got during my entire three-and-a-half-hour interview. What would you say to him if he were to meet with you face to face?"

West responded, “I don’t need you guys to show me the tape in order to prompt my emotions. Pre-looking at his face, I came up here because I wanted to say something to him right after the fact. You don’t have to do the TV stuff with me….I don’t need all the jazz.”

West continued his criticism on his Twitter account, and, since that interview has aired, was back at it this morning.

“I want you guys to look at that footage and start to put everything together now,” he said. “It’s very simple to call someone angry or spoiled or the one thousand names I’ve been called but it’s harder to try to take a look at what’s really behind the curtain... They made a mistake... they thought they could pull it but they couldn’t!”

In response to West’s claims that he was “set up” – the artist also tweeted that he didn’t appreciate “Today” rolling the clip of his (also infamous) interruption of Taylor Swift’s MTV VMAs award acceptance speech in 2009 – Lauer said that nothing was done out of the ordinary.

“It’s something we do everyday. When a guest is talking about a location or an incident, we run video of that location or that incident. There’s nothing improper about it, noting unusual about it whatsoever," Lauer told "Today's" viewers.

Despite the back and forth, West has added that he has no ill will towards the "Today" anchor.

“And I don’t hate Matt Lauer...We don’t promote hate,” he said. "That’s the whole point!!! I promote love and truth! All positive energy ...all smiles. Much love to Matt and the whole Today Show. I accept ya’ll future apology in advance LOL!"

According to his tweets, West is currently in Abu Dhabi to perform.

Seriously, someone tell him to STFU. No one wants to see him perform anyways. I think the VMA's was enough for a lifetime.

wow, i have never seen so many idiotic comments on one article, you people need to do a reality check, KanYe West is one of the gifted artists of the 21st Century.
Every moron that commented on this negatively is 120% ignorant. Those incidents are in the past Matt what ever his name is shouldn't have brought them back up, the man played a picture of George Bush's face trying to make him feel bad about a mistake he made, shame on all of you. You people should do some research on all the GOOD (pun intended) that Kanye has done. While your at it you should peep his album reviews, Rolling Stones gave his new album A PERFECT RATING! guess who the last person to get that was? KANYE F***ING WEST! in 2005.

Now while you go down to pick up your jaw that just dropped you might as well bow down to the King.

Wow, I can't believe it. It was such a fantastic show! Will's character was one of the best on TV! I'm so surprised by this action, I know the ratings weren't great but AMC has shown that it sticks by it shows. This cancellation that people want simple TV, not something where they have to think. They want a show to be filmed in front of a studio audience, with stupid one liners, and some sort of cast that has been repeated a thousand times in television: a cranky dad, a hot soccer mom, and brother and a sister, the womanizer friend, and the crazy grandparents. Also, why the hell did this comment section turn into politics and Kanye West? I mean, seriously what the hell? Oh Well, AMC still has Mad Men, Breaking Bad, and The Walking Dead.

It’s sad to see an individual (celebrity in this case) who doesn’t know how to defend himself in a well-mannered, non-aggressive way. Why do I get the feeling he likes to play the victim card every time?

And if you're going to pick an interviewer to target, Kanye, don't pick one like Matt Lauer that incredibly high popularity and credibility. Once again, your childish behavior has backfired on you.

As always, it was very clear that you were just waiting for an opportunity to claim that you were being disrespected when, in fact, the show was simply what it's done during interviews for decades. Kanye is justified in not performing on the Today Show…it wasn’t that Kenya was upset that he was interrupted by the video clips of the Taylor Swift/ Bush incidents; it was the overt psychological meaning of what was being said in Real-Time vs. pass regrets. Matt was trying to pull as a fast one, since everyone knows images, especially negative images have a more dramatic impact; Kanye just called Matt on his game (Kanye could see Matt Lauer’s ambush). And yes, I think Kanye was wrong for interrupting Taylor’s pivotal moment at the VMA, and the backlash was justifiably deserved. Frankly, if Bush think what Kanye said “Bush don’t care about black people” was the lowest point in his presidency, I think he truly needs to reevaluate more pressing issues on his presidency, like the lie about WMD, 911 – the promise he had made to the American people for the hunt of Osama bin Laden and bringing him to swift justice, the $700 billion bank stimuli bailout and yes, the infamous flyover New Orleans (victims of Hurricane Katrina). Of the 8-years of the Bush Administration, and the lowest point of his presidency he was plagued as being a racist during the aftermaths of Hurricane Katrina and his administration slow response in the rescue efforts of U.S. Citizens, and he felt it was imperative to highlight this in his book and under the same token breath had the audacity to say he doesn’t want the publicity, is truly pathetic, I cannot believe Bush’s idiosyncrasies in why people questioned the level of his intelligence when he deliberately diverted attention to Kanye’s post-Hurricane Katrina insinuating him being a racist as a benefiting highlight to purchase his book, and gullible Matt Lauer unsuspectedly drinks Bush’s Kool-Aid.

Really, the only reason Bush is making such a big deal is because the TRUTH hurts. If he cared so much and was so deeply moved by the plight of New Orleans people, his actions would have shown it. Kanye simply called a spade a spade. It was very timely and embarrassing for the Bush administration. Sometimes the truth is very hard to digest and it reveals who we really are inside – knowingly or unknowingly. What better way to divert everyone's attention from the mess the Bush Administration left our country in. Can our former President talk about that on TV? Kanye, learn a lesson and move on. Enough apologies! You will never please everyone.

Kanye West is an untalented hack. He has no voice, he dresses like an idiot, he is completely disrespectful of his peers and his fans (who happen to be the two groups of people that put him in the position he is in now), and he is musically retarded. The only thing more worthless than Kanye Wests' 'music' is the fact that there are still a lot of people who think he is a genius. It's sad, really, what's happened to peoples' understanding of and respect for music. Rap is a waste of time, and Kanye is a disgrace to REAL musicians everywhere.

Kanye was all EGO, telling people on set to be quiet so he could talk and then throwing a hissy fit about rolling the MTV footage. Hey on this one...I am surprisingly with Kanye. It was very difficult as a person of color to watch our people dying in the streets of New Orleans. It was very difficult to hear news commentators refer to those same people as "refugees" rather than American citizens. So if the young brother was a bit upset, then I understand. As far as him not apologizing, or whatever it was that Matt Lauer wanted him to do, I would not have apologized. Just because George Bush was upset, damn if Bush can't take a little name calling, then he really wasn't fit to be president. Jeez, look at what Obama puts up with all day, every day.

as for GW Bush, what does Kanye owe him? he DOESN'T care about black people. that should be obvious.

My only hope is that he will soon disappear from the public eye and we won't have to hear about him and his tantrums any longer. Or maybe I'm simply being overly optimistic. I was on the verge of beleiving his apology when he went all screwy. As close to an apology he can give. Gave him the benefit of the doubt. As for those with Katrina issues black people aren't the only ones who live in Louisiana. When you live close to the coasts you need to provide food and water for yourselves in advance. You cannot expect the government to give you water etc. in an emergency. You be prepared. If people were prepared themselves many lives would be spared. Kanye needs a lot of growing up. He doesn't need to insult other people to get attention. He seriously should get behavioral health help. He seems to blame racism for all the nations problems.

If any of you actually watched the interview, Matt Lauer was out of line...and the Today Show is certainly guilty of trying to edit out the parts where Lauer was being a jerk. Only in response to Kanye's tweets did they show the clips that were previously edited. So if you didn't actually see the Today Show segment, I would encourage you to try to find it online before passing judgment on Kanye. No, I am in not in any way a Kanye fan. Also it makes him look even more childish when is is at an established network interview and he then tries to instruct the media how to conduct the interview. It is true he has a right to his own opinion; however, I think he needs to keep it to himself and while doing that, keep himself locked in his house so we don't have to be exposed to him.

At worst, he was probably a little too sensitive to Lauer doing what Lauer does in showing two clips over which Kanye has received a lot of criticism. The Today Show has become so tabloid - I totally agree with Kayne about not being manipulated on the spot for some sort of "emotional" reaction that is the show's stock in trade: weeping, parents, widows, distraught parents of missing children, etc.

As a white, upper middle class college educated mother of two, I for one, was glad when Kayne West remarked that "George Bush doesn't like black people." Watching Katrina unfold, and the criminally slow response from the White House, I was thinking the exact same thing as Kayne!
This is America, Kayne is a public figure and he has a right to his opinion and a right to voice it. I'm glad he did and I'll defend his right to do so!
Kayne West was simply expressing his opinion as an American citizen and I think it helped spur action to aid Katrina victims...
Don't blame the victim here - blame the real culprit - the sleazy Today Show and it's cynical cast of characters!

What Matt Lauer did to Kanye West in his interview is exactly what the media always does in every interview: they splice and dice the story in order to portray a certain picture to the public. Similarly, the media has done this same cutting up of stories to George Bush. They never reveal the true story, just the parts that they believe will make a successful news story. So how do we know what is true and what isn't true?
That said, Kanye West made the completely illegitimate remark about George Bush based upon the media's interpretation of the Katrina events. In other words, he made an ill-informed remark about Pres. Bush, and a hurtful (and very elementary ) one at that, most likely based off of what he had seen portrayed via the media. I seriosly doubt he took the time to really find out what was going on behind the scenes before he made that comment.
So, Kanye West complaining about the shortcomings of the media is sort of ridiculous. He does not seem to realize that this is the same media that portrayed untrue images of George Bush, prompting him to make the outlandish comments that he did. Furthermore, his twitter rebuttals are almost impossible to interpret. He continuously contradicts himself. I agree with the others who say that he should stick to music. His attempts at legitimizing himself in other arenas are fruitless and only diminish himself as a person and a performer.

Did you see the film of Kanye the Motormouth on Conan last night? It was hilarious. Can't figure out why someone with a little musical talent thinks that makes him an expert on anything. All Matt Lauer did was expose Kanye as a not-very-bright singer. He obviously doesn't think quickly on his feet, which should make him think twice about his next outburst.

What really irks me about the likes of Kanye, Mel Gibson, Tiger Woods, Bill Belichick - people in the spotlight who've made egregious mistakes - is when they think they get to dictate how others should react, and how long they are allowed to have a reaction. Because THEY are tired of taking heat for their stupidity, they try to insist that everyone else needs to move on. Kanye, if you don't like people pointing out your mistakes - which, sorry, are not normal every day mistakes - you might want to try putting more thought into your actions. It's really not so hard to not look like a fool.

They're ALL socially inept... not to mention grammatically, politically, mannerly, knowledgeably, and morally inept. But, it's no one's fault but ours. When the public goes ga-ga over Lady Gaga and Kanye and the rest of the plastic celebrities, lap at their feet, spend money on their CDs that should be paying the rent or food for the kids - how else should they, or are to be expected to, react? They're just takin' in as much as they can grab while they ride their usually very brief wave of adulation.

Add up the money that the entertainers and jocks make in a year and ask yourself: how many inner city schools could half of it repair to that ALL children can get the education they're promised? Kanye and his righteous indignation over being asked a few uncomfortable questions - what a load of horse hockey. Why doesn't he just shut the hell up and put his money where his over-active mouth is, and HE take care of the black people he says George Bush doesn't care about?

Obviously, they had both media clips primed and ready to go (my degree is in Communication so I know a thing or two about media production). Kanye never fails to disappoint and he reacted the exact way they wanted him to. You can call him a jerk, ass or whatever expletive you choose. The fact is he is what he is. Kanye West has seen death (serious car accident) and I think that has altered his perception of things and political correct restraints that most people have. He wears his heart on his sleeve and isn't afraid of expressing his opinion–regardless of whether or not it is at your expense.

Reading most posts, I can only conclude that the majority here are not people who have a diverse sensibility to art. Kanye is a genius at producing new and artistic ways of expression through music. Yes, he does have social interaction issues but what genius doesn't? Michael Jackson was a pedophile but he's considered a great loss to music and the world?! What does that say about our world? Kanye says & does some dumb things here and there because he views the world as a person who doesn't understand why we live by society's rules of what is relevant or important. He views things differently than what everyone else does by not following the stream of ridiculousness. Lesser minds will always take things for face value and dismiss them as the majority have done here. Everyone celebrates the celebrity drug addicts and abusers of today's musicians and actors but when Kanye just says some unnecessary comments, he gets ridiculed. what a country! Someone is different than the white culture and he's deemed irrelevant but all these white politicians who abuse drugs, have extra marital affairs, and pretty much send this country into more and more debt, get all the votes and popularity?!

And ok, so we might not all know alot about how the business works or about art but we all know the simple rules of economics. If you have a product with the damand for it waning, no matter how good of a product it is, it will no longer need to be ... created. Not because he is arrogant or delusional–he is both–but because the reality show watching uncritical undisciplined youth love this stuff and their parents are too weak and busy to teach them there is a better world out there for them to create. So even though George Bush deserved what was said, Kanye probably deserves as much criticism for his personal bad judgement and egoistic antics which get publicized, imitated, and then ruins hiphop and American culture in the eyes of the world. He made a total fool of himself...and by Matt explaining "that's what we do" he clearly indicated that it was in regards to the video that ran at the same time as the interview...it's called live television, and at the time, he was asking Kanye if by his selfish stunt at the VMA's, he knew how President Bush felt by being called a racist, how would the video not be relavent. Kanye is a camera hog, who only cares about getting his stupid face on tv. Hopefully his 15 minutes are now LONG over and we won't hear from his sorry a$$ anymore. Pound Salt Kanye.

I honestly think Kanye is a racist. The two main incidents were him dissing white people in defense of black people. Seems kind of crystal clear to me. Then he says he meant no disrespect to Taylor Swift and only wanted to say that Beyonce was more deserving of that award. It isn't for him to judge who was more deserving, he doesn't get to decide. He is a self-centered, big-mouthed narcissist who needs to shut the hell up. Just make your music and entertain us because that is what you do best. Get off Twitter and go in the studio and make your good music so I can see you perform it on SNL. His last 2 performances on SNL have been epically stellar. George Bush may not have been the smartest president we've ever had. There's no question about that.

There's a big difference between speaking from the heart about your displeasure with people in power and flat-out calling that person a racist for virtually no reason. Did you know that Bush wanted to send troops to Lousiana, but couldn't since the Governor didn't request them? That's how the law works. How is that racist?

Do you really think George Bush thought, "eh, screw all those black people in Lousiana. Let's not send them help. BECAUSE THEY'RE BLACK." I mean, SERIOUSLY?

When he doesn't like you, he tries to play gotcha and be really tough. Yes, Kayne made some ill-advised remarks. He apologized for the Taylor Swift incident a long time ago. Why bring it up? To get this kind of reaction so that they could then leak it to the media and create ratings for the Today show. They know he is volatile and they were hoping for some kind of reaction- the angry Black man thing. It is manipulation pure and simple. Unfortunately for Kayne, he wasn;t not prepared for it. See ClubRob fans like you are why the Kanye's are put of control. I LUV Whitney Houston to death but even I know her ignorant behavior after marrying Bobby and the tacky reality show displayed her TRUE colors. I wouldn't dare get on a board and defend her behavior. Kanye was DEAD wrong to humiliate a girl who just wanted to sing her songs. Kanye's camp is known for stunts for more PR and thats why EVERYONE turned on this idiot. Yes I said it he's an IDIOT!!! His mother would be VERY sad at his behavior. Even my daughters who are HUGE Kanye fans felt he went to far promoting OVEREXPOSED Beyonce and humilating Taylor!!!! I think it easy to point and judge, but when one finds himself/ herself having to explain poor judgment in the past, emotions become overpowering. I think anyone posting today, tomorrow would agree having to say your wrong to one person is one thing. Imagine saying it to a whole family or to all your coworkers, then to a million of strangers. I feel profound sadness to think I live in a society that is so disconnected and empathetic we can’t identify and feel for another lost soul...

It's one thing to empathize with someone who stuck their foot in their mouth, realized their mistake, and was accountable for it.

It's another thing when that person thinks they are 'the voice of the generation', doesn't want to take accountability for their actions, and makes the same mistakes over and over and over.

I think too many people are doing a little too much JUDGING on this board. Kanye West is an extremely talented performer. What other super-talent performers HAVEN'T been tortured, misunderstood, sometimes arrogant human beings..??! Mick Jagger, Andy Warhol, Burt Reynolds, Charlie Sheen, Russell Crowe...the list is endless. I personally think Kanye has a RIGHT to say what he wants, and say how he feels. I dont see too many people on this board that the world would give two hoots about..yet the stones are being thrown all over the place at a man, that is above all else, ENTERTAINING. Even entertaining enough that he's used as target practice for a bunch of non-talented haters. Look in a mirror people. Perhaps some of the callous epithets being bandied about, like "idiot", "moron", "jerk" might be a bit tempered when said in the context of looking oneself in a mirror. These posts are disgusting. With all the hate and violence in the world, one would think that people would grow weary of tearing someone else down.. ooops...guess I was wrong.

I don't like Kayne's music and I don't buy it which is my choice and I don't have a problem with anyone who likes his music for I do believe in freedom of choice. It is just that he needs to stick to what he does best. Politics is not it. He should perform for that is his job and then leave the politics to the politicians. I will agree that I thought Beyonce's video was better than Taylor's but that did not give him the right to take the mike out of her hand during Taylor's moment and make a fool of himself. Honestly what did that accomplish. Taylor still got the award and Beyonce will continue to get hers. But Kayne will be remembered for acting a fool. He needs to just Rap and not sing and I am sure he will be surprised at how many people will start to support him for his God given talent.

I'm going to challenge the Kayne haters to look at the video again...and maybe see it another way...or even...in this case...see what I saw.

Not having seen the Taylor Swift thing (until just now)...but having heard about it...Kayne, of course, got a big fat zero as a person from me. :)~

And not knowing ANYTHING else about Kayne West...(wouldn't know the guy if I ran over him)...but what this link just showed me...I see a guy in pain...and torn...about what he perceived as a terrible injustice.

He is trying to admit that he misspoke about hurricane Katrina/Bush racism. But I also see a man struggling to apologize for the racist comment meanwhile trying to maintain that indeed...(as I believe) that while he shouldn't have said anything racist...the truth of the matter is...(and I am in total agreement) the response...or there...lack of...to Hurricane Katrina would have been much more swift...had that stadium been packed with the upper echelon of white people. It simply is a fact of life...and so very sad!

Without seeing or hearing what exactly he did say...WHAT I see on THIS video is someone who knows he was wrong about being so up in Bush' face...about racism...and would like to maintain that while it probably wasn't racist driven...the lack of response...there was something to be said...as valid...as it indeed happened.

There was no appropriate response and ultimately...Bush should have taken over. I remember seeing hundreds of loaded trucks with supplies...idling on standby...while the government bickered over who was going to be able to send in what... Meanwhile...people are defecating on themselves...starving...dying...from dehydration. It was appalling.

I think what Lauer did while interviewing is shenanigans (playing the tapes etc) He's just trying to re-inflate, drum up...a story...re-hash it. He was playing to the audience.

Apparently both he and Matt were in New Orleans days later when all this horrifying stuff was going on...I can only imagine the pain of seeing thousands upon thousands...I guess mostly black people...or the downtrodden...absolutely filled with despair. We live in the richest nation on the face of the planet...and yet...nothing was going right.

The response to Hurricane Katrina will go down in history as one of the United States most shameful moments. If Matt Lauer has been patient...while Kayne explained himself...I think we would have seen a man trying to be truthful and sincere.
I think Lauer was behaving like a clod.

I love it when afterwards he and Meredith are commenting...'well that's what we always do". as if to suggest humiliating a person is perfectly acceptable while they are trying to offer up a sincere apology. Lauer is not operating in the real world. He's operating in the land of Matt. The entertainment media is not in the business of ethics! It's E for entertainment.

I hope Bush accepted Kane' apology as it was intended. I also believe that every President...Democrat, Republican or whatever...has the best of intentions...though sometimes that is just not good enough. That's when you have to look at all the spokes in the wheels of the operating machine (our government) and see what when wrong and how that can be corrected so it never happens again.

I dont suppose you know about Bush asking the Govenor to give him permission to send in the national guard and the Govenor replying "give me 24 hours". The President cant just send in the troops to a state without the states permission. Or would you have the Feds violate States rights?

    • really?

Katrina was a tragedy, but people need to step back and get the facts. You just admitted that there were trucks lined up waiting to go in. Bush offered help almost immediately, but the STATE government has the primary authority for state disasters and initially refused the federal assistance. Are you saying that interrupting a 17 year old who is receiving an award in front a TON of people is acceptable? In the world I live in, like everyone else, it doen't matter what kind of injustice someone felt. It is rude, selfish and completely UNacceptable. What happened with West and Swift was not a debate. It was an award that the girl earned and she deserved her time in the spotlight. West is constantly messing up. What a loser

I didn't see the Lauer interview and don't care to. He will not get any ratings from me 🙂

If you don't know the back story, you really shouldn't comment on things. I don't know much about Kanye myself as I am not a fan of his type of music but I know enough about him to know that this is just another example of Kanye making a complete ass of himself in order to remain in the spotlight. He is a complete narcissist jerk who only cares about himself and loves to hear himself speak.

Marie – You wrote very thoughtfully, and I for one appreciated the time it took, the points made, etc. The only note I would make to you is this: the entirety of the interview was (in fact) 40 minutes. Matt allowed Kanye all the time he needed to formulate his answers, he was not rushed in any fashion. There was three to five minutes of time that elapsed between the time a question was asked and Mr. West put the words together that he wished to say.

Kanye is still reeling from the death of his mother, he is most likely surrounded by a lot of "yes" people. You called that one very well. However, when one publically cites another as racist after having done so themselves, why is it unfair to allow the other shoe to drop? This young man has much growing up to do . . . he came to apologize, yes. Now cries foul when his past mistakes are brought to the fore?

Our country suffers from putting the wrong people into positions of idealization. Our armed forces, fire fighters, police officers, teachers should be paid what any of these entertainers are making per year. They are the heroes, not the ones who play them. But I digress . . . .

Funny how you forgot to mention the mayor of NO- who decided the school buses weren't good enough, or the governor that told the feds, we got it covered. Reaponse should have been quicker, but to lay it at the foot of the president sounds remarkably racist, just as kanye west did

Kanye had very good reason to attack those who were attacking him. He wasnt there to talk about Taylor Swift. He was supposed to make a few statements about what Mr. Bush said in his book of lies and promote his upcoming album. I watched the show hoping to see those things...not discuss old news about Swift and how he and X-President Bush are seen as a racist. Who Cares. Obviously the today show is more concerned with promoting racial tension than Kanye West.

Kanye should have kicked Matt Lauer's ass!

You are your past. Your slate isn't wiped clean every New Year's Day, despite what some may wish. We are all the sum of our past experiences and actions, for good or ill. Kanye doesn't get to dictate what we do or don't remember, or what we ask him about because, whether he likes it or not, it happened. It's fact, and it's a part of his legacy now. He can either try to move past it, give us something else, something better to remember, or continue to act like a bratty child whenever someone questions his history or his actions. Actions speak louder than words, and despite Kanye's words, his actions give the impression of a loudmouthed biggot. If he wants to be a loudmouthed biggot, that is his choice, and he's free to be one as far as I care. But if he chooses to be a loudmouthed biggot, he shouldn't be surprised if someone else calls him on it, or wants to know why, especially when he craves so much attention as to continuously pull stunts like this in front of a camera.

Actually, while I am not a fan of West in the least (I've only ever heard "jesus Walks", that was enough, thanks), I think he is perfectly right is exposing how exploitive and manipulative the media is . ML was doing his job, sure, but obviously Kanye West is no patsy, and kudos to him for standing up for his own dignity. And while i have little against Bush in particular, what's worse is George Bush crying like a baby about West's remark lol, revenge on West if anything. We are supposed to believe that Bush was more deeply affected by West's remark than he was by the protesters at his inauguration or any of the zillions of instances where people hurled insults at him? Come on, a shell game. You go Kanye ! And retract that "apology" while you are at it, you had every right to say what you did, what's the big deal? Otherwise you are going to loose your credibility in a hurry. BE IRREVERENT !!

    • let's be reasonable

First, Matt Lauer (the media) didn't distort anything here. KANYE brought up how he had been called a racist too, during the Taylor Swift incident fallout, so it was perfectly reasonable for them to show a clip while he was speaking about it.

Second, obviously I don't have insight into George Bush's mind, but I think he was probably more affected by being called a racist than by other attacks on his policies because being called a racist is attacking the very person you are – your morals and your upbringing, etc. He was likely able to deal with other criticisms and Bush-bashing more easily because those attacks were mainly related to hsi decisions, etc.

He's doesn't have an ounce of humility. I think the interview was meant to soften his image and unfortunately, Kanye, as always, got in his own way. Interviews are dialogues, not monologues and do revolve around discussing our past as well as present and possibly future. I do not think I like this young man anymore. His behavior is more and more spoiled and self-absorbed. Money does not give you true power, only the ability to control your moods, words and actions when all are seemingly against you .. is.

The shame of it is this 'man' has no one - including himself - to check his ego. I think it very interesting that he wants to erase his past actions while at the same time promoting "truth". UHMMMMMM, Really I think this is another example of a person who I do not think is extraordinarily cerebral and yet feels the need to, and is given the right to, pontificate due to his celebrity stature. It is really quite OK to not be an exactly stellar thinker but when you fool yourself into thinking you are just that you have a big problem ... and of course the people you pay and those that hang on for a free ride will keep your illusion going. The is no truth for this man because the only truth he sees is that no matter what he does their is an excuse for him to do it. Its OK for him to call Bush unsympathetic to black people, and its just as OK for him to ignore Bush's thoughts ... yes that is REAL truth "the world is as I say it is and that is that." ... lol this guy is funny.

Peole in the USA give this guy way too much air time, who cares what he thinks, why not interview people who actually have talent, to actually infer that your President is a racist is disgusting, and i do not blame Mister Bush for being angry, ya if probably was one of the most devastating things to be said or happen, because it involves his soldiers, the people he governed, so if he does not want to perform on the today show and is angry with Matt , it is a good thing, keep him off the airwaves

Kanye West needs help, seriously. I applaud him for his Katrina efforts and I believe that Prez Bush doesn't like black people. To first go on the Today show and attempt an apology to Bush – when none was necessary, then attack Matt Lauer was uncalled for. But he's going to destroy his career with his outbursts and canceling shows. He needs to effectively deal with his mother's death and seek some couseling. He's too talented an artist to destroy his career.

Kanye, Mr. Yesterday's News, has shown us his real colors. His career has been inflated by myth and is now being brought down by reality. I'd like to kick him on the way down. Bye-bye- pompous @#$%^&*!

Kayne is just too much ego, to even understand what they asked him.

He hurt Bush's feelings, and no matter how I don't like his policy or what he's done to our country, at least you see some humanity in the man. I even miss the old knuckle head.

As for does racism exist in this country, yes, just look at Glen Beck and a majority of the Tea Party followers. With that, I wouldn't call anyone racist unless it were 100% true.

Everything Kanye West said was right! Lowery did attempt to force feed him words! I think that Kanye was forced into that interview and into “saying he was sorry”. Kayne should be proud, that
Look, this is a white man’s world. Kanye was forced into that interview and he was forced to apologize. Anybody with half a brain knows that bush is racist and Kanye West was justified and right for sticking up for the black community. I don’t care who buys his music he is a black man and he is an artist who is proud of his heritage. Kanye has to decide what’s important to him. He may have lost a few album sales but he makes up for it in PERSONAL INTEGRITY! Thank you Kanye West for saying others are too afraid to say. Bravo Kanye for being my personal hero! Keep your head up.
