Conan: Leno won't be a guest on new show

Seth Rogen, Tom Hanks and Harrison Ford are just a few of the stars who will appear on Conan O'Brien's new late-night talk show over the next two weeks. One name that won't be landing on the list anytime soon? Jay Leno.

"He can come as the musical guest, because that I want to see," O'Brien remarks in a candid new interview in Playboy's December issue before adding, "No, there are certain things I will not do, regardless of the price.”

And while the "Conan" show will tape not far from the "Tonight Show," O'Brien doesn't anticipate that he and Leno will ever cross paths. "We hang out in different circles, so I don’t think we’ll be bumping into each other," he explains.

Despite his comments about Leno  and the fact that the comic replaced him just 7 months into his new gig as the "Tonight Show" host, O'Brien insists he's not bitter – which is why he didn't dwell on the negative in his signoff speech.

“I wanted to end on an optimistic note. I thought it could end up being the most important moment of my television career. It still could be," says the 43-year-old funny man, who considers himself a fortunate person. " Doing those last 'Tonight Shows' was a high. A lot of people tuned in, and I was really proud of what I was able to make in that situation."

As for the "Conan" show, which premieres November 8 on TBS, he says, "It’s going to be me doing whatever is in my power to entertain people for an hour." That includes making actors pay a fine if they dare to plug their projects on his show.

"I want to talk to people who are good at a craft, people who work with their hands… We’re going to talk to a lot of upholsterers," he jokes. "Will I bar Tom Hanks from the set? No, I will not. He can come, but he’s not allowed to talk about his project. He’s gonna keep his [expletive] mouth shut about his project. And we may have financial penalties… Anytime someone starts to drift into ‘Well, the great thing about this movie is that I was reunited with my favorite director’ - bzzzzt –everyone watching gets $2,500."

Ultimately, O'Brien tells Playboy, " I’m going for eight months on the air. All I want to do is break my 'Tonight Show' record.”

Wow, Conan really turned out to be a whiny little baby. Leno on Conan's new show would make rating history for late night talk shows. "Boo hoo he tuk muh jub!" Guess what Conan? You were kicked because when you started hosting the Tonight Show, it actually LOST to Letterman. In all the years that Leno hosted, he never once lost. Plus your viewership was steadily declining anyway, just face it. You're just not as appealing as Jay Leno because the vast majority of people who watch Late Night shows are middle-aged and above.

Conan not bitter? That is his best joke yet. I don't know why he continues to portray Jay Leno as the one who caused him to leave NBC. NBC gave Conan a choice and he rejected it. I suspect he feels he made the wrong choice now.

I am a Leno fan. Because he is good at his job. He ALWAYS makes me smile, if not laugh out loud. Since the Johnny Carson era when I was a child, I watched the Tonight Show but vowed to never watch again when Leno left. I will never watch Conan or Letterman because they are not funny at all, just sarcastic.

To the ill informed nimrod that said Leno is old and doesn't smoke weed. I propose a challenge...get Conan and Jay to do a smoke out! I'll put my money on Jay...he can smoke wicked amounts of herb he and Harrison Ford are two of hollywoods deepest lungs! To smoke or not to smoke is not the question as to why either one is funnier than the other its just that they both came from different eras. Weed has nothing to do with it but I'd love to see them both sit down and pass the peace pipe back and forth in one of those ultimate fighter caged battled rings and with Woody Harrison in Connans corner and Harrison Ford in Jays .... Hell I'd pay $100.00 to see that on "Pay per view"!!! Oh yeah and after each round of bowl smoking they got to do 5min stand up jokes. Would love to have Lindsay Lohan be the Bikini girl that walks around announcing the up comming ring! Ohhhh yeah!!!

What you Leno-supporting morons seem not to get is that he's the true crybaby. He forced himself into the Tonight Show (even though Carson handpicked Letterman) and had the audacity to call Carson washed-up. You guys are calling Conan to man-up?! What about sticking to your word? I'm pretty sure that's has as much to do with being a man as vindictive revenge. Leno is an unoriginal quack who thinks he's such hot S*** in real-life. Pompous, and arrogant.

P.S. I'd assume Coco wouldn't invite Hanks back because Hanks was the one who started this whole "Coco" phenomenon. As much as I'm sure it does truly annoy you, Conan, you must be giddy over the marketing aspect. TEAM COCO!

Conan kicks a$$. Leno is ok too. I just like unpretentious people. Conan can turn a really stupid joke into something funny by pointing out how dumb the joke was. I hope they bring back the Clutch Cargo skits with Saddam and Arnold. I also liked his interaction with the band and LaBamba

Personally I think Conan is much more funny. I'm not dumping on Jay either because I think they're both funny. Conan has more of a weird sense of humor that gets kinda idiotic, but he knows some of his jokes are stupid. Leno is more straight laced and that serves a certain audience. I also think Leno benefited from the Johnny Carson crowd sticking around.

I agree with you John. I am a tonight show fun and when Conan took over, the watched to see how it was. It was awful. A gave him a chance and after the 4 nights of watching him, I finally gave up and stopped watching the Tonight show. Only when Jay Leno came back did I started watching The Tonight show. With millions in his pocket, Conan should just call it a day and enjoy those cool milliions - he's comedy is so slapstick, it is hard to watch.

And last I checked Leno was the one cryin and tryin to ruin Conan. One thing about America that is a mess is people a free to have an opinion and say what they want but its not a law to be informed. Conan is such a big crybaby. I'm tired of his whining. His show on NBC got cancelled because of low ratings. It was awful! If he had been able to at least beat David Letterman in the ratings, he might still have a job there. Leno gets the short end of the stick here and the media makes him out to look like the bad guy in this. Afterall, Conan got millions of dollars for being a big failure. Must be nice to be a failure and still make millions. If George Lopez was half the crybaby Conan was for having to move his show one hour later, then we'd have the whole late night debacle all over again, but Lopez knows it's part of show business and gracefully smiled and looked happy at the media...humility is something Conan needs to learn!

Now I will say Conan is more funny then Leno. Leno should have been a man and just ither left show business or went to another network, Leno had his run and has not been funny for years anyway. For years the only part of leno i saw was the last 5 minute befor conan started cause my dvr started recording early so as not to miss the funny that is coco. Now I did catch a few episodes of Lenos new time slot and it was the same lame jokes and stupid chuckle. Conan was a man about the whole thing. At no time in tonight show history did they ask Johnny to move to midnight cause the guy befor him sucked! It would have been a plain wrong. Now and till the end of Leno I will never tune into the Tonight show with Jay &^%$&(&^()(*%^ Leno......Move tonight show i mean come on ppl that should show you that Leno was a punk about it. Why couldnt Leno be a man and move to a time after Conan and Jimmy? Oh i know cause like his other time slot no one would bother to watch him. Well thats my rant. To all Team Coco fans enjoy the new show cause I know I will.

Conan did a great thing by not accepting the push back to midnight. That would have F'd everyone behind him (Late night with Jimmy Fallon) Fallon has a great show, im rarely up that late, but anytime ive watched its been really funny, better than Leno. So hats off to Conan for seeing the writing on the wall, and taking a (forced) break and moving to a new station. Looking forward to some good comedy.

I think we all have forgotten, it was NBC who told Jay Leno to go to the other 10 p.m. show, so that Conon could take over the Tonight Show. And then it was NBC who decided that Conan wasn't bringing in the people. So it was never Jay Leno's fault. He just went where NBC told him to go.

I think all of you are too quick to blame Conan and Leno. NBC was the ones who dropped the ball. The announced back in 2005 that Conan would be replacing Leno as the "Tonight Show" host (which was not what Leno wanted). During those negotiations, NBC did not want a repeat of David Letterman (Leno being chosen over Letterman to replace Johnny Carson). So NBC offered Leno his own show at a 10pm weeknight spot. During the course of both the "Jay Leno Show" and the "Tonight Show" both ratings didn't perform as hoped by NBC. Leno's rating did well for NBC but not the affiliates who felt Leno's ratings were not good enough to sustain an audience for the 11pm newscasts. Bottom line: NBC screwed up

You do realize that most of Conan's quotes are pieces of an interview, right? Or did you even read the article? If you did, I'm sure you would have been able to surmise that these are questions that he was asked by the interviewer. That is, unless you're a complete idiot – then you may not have grasped that. He's not just going around talking smack about Leno to anyone who will listen. You may be correct that he is bitter, but this article doesn't prove it. Now, run along and let the grown-ups talk.

Conan, you are the worlds child, we want to watch you and support you when things go array. I'm not religious but, Godspeed!

Great. Just what the world needs-a 43 year old child. Lol. Leno, Conan-what difference does it make? It's all crap and the few people that watch it only do so because there's nothing else on.

brandonj, who are you to tell us "why" we watch either of these shows? Do you know all of us personally? I watch because its funny, not because there's nothing else to do.

Oh, excuse me JAB. I forgot to mention the tiny minority of morons who think this loser is funny. Yeah, he's really hilarious-that's why his ratings sucked. The bottom line to all of this is that NBC wouldn't have gotten rid of Conan if the ratings were there-but they weren't. In fact, they took a serious nosedive after Jay left-who isn't very funny either. In any event, get a life and quit getting all bent out of shape because some dares not agree with you-you pathetic little loser.

@@say what – I think it's funny that you chastise someone for sarcasm about not having a life when you post about not having a life. I think you are the one the sarcasm was lost on.

Dee, if you mean by real adults you mean those who humorless, easily amused, and those who enjoy watching a someone rip off countless bits and brings zero originality to the table, then you might be the realest of all.

Say hello to the rest of your dwindling, stagnant contingent for me.

Dee – last I checked this whole Tonight Show fiasco started because JAY wasn't able to bring in the viewers for HIS new show. Oh, and don't you have to actually cry to be called a "cry baby"?

I love Conan but having Jay Leno on his show would only make him better. Talk about the ultimate turn the other cheek! I think its time for Conan to move on and let go of the anger. His response about having Jay Leno on makes it clear he is still mad no matter what he says. Show business is a mean and harsh business. You have to get used to being treated badly. he, unlike most, was compensated well for this.

The last time i watched any of them was when letterman did his alka-seltzer suit. And that was a while ago.

Conan... do us a favor.... don't contort your face and screech like a freak.... seriously.... it is disturbing....and it isn't funny.

Second. Leno owes you nothing. You tried to take his job. And you complain because he manned up and took it back? Act like a man for ONCE and stop being a cry baby. No one likes you... which is why your ratings fell off a cliff. Loser.

I just hope he keeps the beard. Who cares about Leno anyway – Letterman, Conan, and now even Craig Ferguson are all better at what they do IMO. At least Leno is better than Jimmy Fallon (what a compliment).

Are you people really that stupid? Imagine your dream job. Now imagine the person who has your dream job agrees to give you their job in 5 years. Imagine waiting 5 years and then being handed your dream job. Now imagine 8 months later. Imagine having your legs cut underneath from you BY THE VERY PERSON WHO PROMISED TO GIVE YOU THE JOB. It wasn't because of Conan, it was because Leno's numbers sucked. Leno even said he wanted to retire, and wanted to go out on top. But I guess Leno still needs money for his what? Like 400 car collection? Leno does it for the money. Conan did it for the job. That's what makes this a huge deal. If I was Conan, hell yes I'd be mad. Hell yes I'd be REAL mad. Hell yes I'd ask for a truckload of cash because now my staff has no job. I'd stay mad. Conan was weinerchopped from having his dream job by a bunch of corporate, back stabbing retards. I thought Leno was a decent guy, but instead of going out on top he'll be very far at the bottom. Conan was always funny, and will always be funny because guess what? He's not in it for the money. And hey, if you don't like Conan, that's cool. But seriously, think a little bit before blasting away and put yourself in his shoes. Also, if you like Leno, enjoy your bland, sad sense humor. I'm sure you're a real hit at parties.

I do not care for Conan's humor, and I don't watch his show. However, the class by which he has handled himself through this has at least made me a fan of his character.
