Jonah Hill takes on '21 Jump Street'

Actor Jonah Hill is no stranger to playing high school students, but now he's getting ready to play a cop masquerading as a high school student in the big-screen version of the 1980s TV hit, "21 Jump Street."

"That should be shooting early next year," 26-year-old Hill, who is also writing the script, tells MTV News. "It will be my next movie. I won't do another movie before that movie as of right now."

The original "21 Jump Street" starred Holly Robinson Peete, Peter DeLuise, Dustin Nguyen, and, of course, Johnny Depp, who shot to superstardom as a baby-faced crime fighter. Hill has written a role for Depp into his script, and he says, "Hopefully, he does it. It would be awesome if he did it."

Though "Superbad" co-star Emma Stone is also rumored to be starring in the movie, Hill isn't revealing the names of the cast members just yet. But, he says, "I think we'll have some cool casting announcements to make very, very soon."

This kid is going to die the fat, funny celebrity death that killed John Belushi, John Candy, Chris Farley and Chris Penn. He gets fatter every time I see him. He's hilarious, but he might want to lay off eating mayo out of the jar.

Cyberpolice, I am worried you may hurt yourself trying to correct every poorly spelled comment appearing in this blog. Out of concern for your health, I advise that you log off and take a nap. Perhaps when you wake up, you could go look for a job.

C'mon, Hollywood. Leave the late-80s/early 90s alone already.

I hope the storyline is something of a passing of the torch idea. It gets real pitiful when some actors can't really get certain established parts right.

21 Jump Street? Hopefully Jonah doesn't have to do any "jumping" because I don't think he could.

Also, shave the double chin hair! It's gross!

I liked the show. I have all the shows on dvd and will watch them from time to time. As far as bringing back the original cast, unfortunately I don't think it would work if you put them in their old roles. As cameos, definetely it would bring back the old 21 Jump Street fanbase. P.S: I'm surprised nobody mentioned Steven Williams who played Capt. Adam Fuller.

Not sure if Depp would really be into this. If you follow his carrer, his roles have always had some sort of uniquness to them; or he found a way to create an interesting character when there was nothing to work with. That being said, the people he has acted with have always been of interest to him as well. I could be really wrong when I make this assumption but, I'm not really sure there is much depth to Jonah Hills range. I wish there would be; however, every time this guy shows up in a movie...it's the same character with the same script; just different costuming. Please, show me something else and make me change my opinion.

I think if you are going to redo this filck. Go find unknows, who need jobs. This is what happened with the original Jump Street. I'm sure there are many actors who would love to do this. Humm? That might be something Depp would jump at.

    Just my thoughts.

Hopefully this won't be another campy remake of a non-campy hit tv show from the past e.g. Starsky&Hutch, Charlie's Angels, etc.

Isn't it kinda obvious to anyone but me that Jonah Hill and Emma Stone are big goofballs? Aren't the majority, if not all, of the movies they're in are super goofy? I don't mean that as a bad thing. I actually like their movies. It's just not Johnny Deeps cup of tea I don't think.

@alltyme....Do you even know what 21 Jump Street was? It wasn't a movie so this isn't a "remake", it was a television show and it was a television show from 25 years ago so unless instead of being students the cops are nursing home patients that won't work.

Why not write a small part for all the original cast ? besides Depp I am sure they could all use the work (although Holly is cohosting The Talk on CBS) - that would be interesting

So Hollywood ran out of good ideas to make movies about so they continue to remake old ones or create film versions of old tv shows. And I heard rain comes from the sky.

I was thinking that exact same thing. I think Greico actually got more fame from the series that Depp. I seem to recall a spin off called "Booker" that did quite well. I also have many memories of being subjected to it weekly due to the fact my sister loved this guy. Correction, still loves this guy. (Greico that is)
