GLAAD: 'Glee' shouldn't have used 'tra**y'

After the Parents Television Council gave them heat for that racy GQ photo shoot, "Glee" has come under fire once again: New York magazine's Vulture reports that GLAAD is upset that the hit Fox series featured the word "tra**y" in its "Rocky Horror"-themed show.

In the episode, the character of Mike Chang offers to play campy cross-dresser Dr. Frank-N-Furter but then backs out, explaining that his parents don't want him “dressing up like a tra**y.”

"The casual manner in which the word was used is jarring, even if he may have been repeating what his parents said," GLAAD'S Matt Kane writes on the organization's site.

"Unfortunately the larger problem here is that the word 'tra**y' has become an easy punch line in popular culture, and many still don’t realize that using the term is hurtful, dehumanizing, and associated with violence, hatred, and derision against transgender people - a community that is nearly invisible in media today," the statement went on.

Kane points out that "How I Met Your Mother" also used the word on its October 18 episode, and that "Project Runway" star Christian Siriano has added to the problem by making "hot tr**y mess" a popular catchphrase.

"GLAAD urges all entertainment industry creators to stop using the word tra**y for a cheap laugh," says Kane.

I am so sick of all this "overly sensitivity". I say we start a new movement of "suck-it-up"! My Gosh people! We are becoming a society of babies! I am sick of EVERYTHING being censored, or deemed offensive. I am offended that these groups can't see that I am adult enough to know what is right and wrong. Quit telling me what I should be offended by! I love Glee! And totally loved the Rocky show! Didn't even catch the TRANNEY comment. (oops, I typed the whole word... Wonder if I am going to get complaints now)

Tranny??? I had to read all the comments before I figured out what all the uproar was. Glee is by far one of THE worst show on TV to begin with. Just stupid, period. So, who cares what they say?????? All you trans-gender ppl out there??? Be proud of yourself, and don't bother with such petty arguments over such a cheesy, dumb show.

What if he had said "don't want me to dress in drag"? Would that be offensive? The problem I have with GLAAD is that they jump up and down every time something burns their delicate little ears, but they never have a suggestion on a way to move the dialogue forward.

Then they say that GBLT characters are under-represented in mainstream media. Of course they are. It's simple economics, and a character is only as useful as the gags you can get with them.

When you have to set aside money from your budget so you can be ready for GLAAD's extortion, give us a donation or suffer public haranguing, then you're just not going to write a gay character into your story.

Sure you have free speech, but if someone used the word "n*gger" you better believe that there would be a helluva lot more stink than this.

And to you "f*ggots" who have no problem with the word "tr*nny", that's nice. I (a native american) have no issues with the word "n*gger". See, being a gay person has nothing to do with being trans (unless you drag queens are shoving yourselves under the "transgender" umbrella with the other people who actually aren't going through hell just for kicks on a friday night at the gay bars.

So how about we leave the saying it's ok to use "tr*nny" to actual trans people and you gays just shut yer perty little mouths?

Seriously when will the whining stop? If that word offends u then u dont need to talk at all. And im afraid it will come to that if people dont stop complaining. We cant say this word or we cant say that word. How stupid can u be? If it offends u then stop watching it. Its like people and religion. If u dont agree with it dont gripe about it just walk the other way. yea we all have rights and if i watch something that says something i dont like i dont watch it anymore. plain and simple. Its called entertainment. they have a power button on the tv. If they are not personally attacking u and i mean actually harming u by hitting u or abusing u then shut up! more important things in life to be worried about than some word being said.

GLAAD and PETA are the worst groups to over react to the point where they become silly and loose all credibility.

If tranny has such a negative connotation, maybe we need to start reflecting inwards before criticizing the outside world on its use. Should the Trannyshack in SF sanitize it's name to appease you, GLAAD? Maybe I'm just an insensitive f-g, but this whole discussion is a hot tranny mess! Get over it GLAAD, you can't banish all the words. Try reclaiming them instead of wasting energy wiping them from our vocabulary. Tranny to me means fun, celebratation, decadence, and over-the-top. Next, you're going to want to ban the words "drag," "hag," and "f-g-bangle."

Using the word tranny when someone IS a tranny is not a pejorative. Using the word gay to mean something is stupid a different issue. It is changing the meaning of a word and slighting a entire segment of the population. GLAAD needs to take a good look. If someone is called gay, as in being stupid, they can feel offended. If someone is a tranny and gets offended when someone calls them that, then they have more issue with the truth than they have with a word.

I don't see how the word "tranny" is offensive. It's usually applied as a descriptive term to men who are ostentatious cross-dressers... as in, red glitter lipstick, huge 80s-era Dallas housewife wigs, gigantic platform shoes... in other words, people who are trying to look like cartoon characters rather than genuinely living as the opposite gender. And with his corsets and comically oversized pearl necklace, Dr. Frankenfurter is pretty darn tranny!

Sticks and stones, people. Sticks and stones. Because I'm comfortable in my own skin, folks can call me any damn thing they please. And I mean anything. Why should I empower others by taking umbrage? I'd rather empower myself by embracing life and letting all the artifice slip by the wayside. Words aren't real, folks. They don't exist in nature and they can't hurt you unless you allow them too. The sooner you recognize words for what they are–and are NOT–the sooner you can live life on your own terms and nobody else's.

Also, jdee, you might be surprised to learn that "dudes chopping off their junk" hardly ever happens these days.

You're right about Blazing Saddles. Mel Brooks could never make a movie like that today without catching heat from every organization under the sun. As a matter of fact, when the movie is aired occasionally on the comedy channel I've noticed certain words that aren't even cuss words are either muted or dubbed with a different less offensive word. Oddly enough an occasional curse word will be allowed and not muted. It's weird that profanity is acceptable, but words that may offend others but are not profane are not acceptable.

During katrina, peta folks were more concerned about animal rights than saving the animals. the humane society i worked with almost left the area because the peta folks were so hostile to everyone! i usually never have anything to say about glaad, but this is stupid, like the usual peta responce to anything!

Linda the PETA approved word is "companion animal" not pet. The word "pet" has been deemed as too dismissive, almost as if people have more rights than animals.

I love how the first thing that comes to mind for all these whiners about the article is that GLAAD is no different than PETA. A psychologist would have a field day with that. LGBT, especially Ts apparently, aren't really humans or people, so it's ok if we use the word tranny in a derogatory sense. Let's lump them in with animals and treat them as such. They're not people! They won't mind! Idiots.

Isn't it funny that you knew you couldn't directly spell such language in a thread while trying to sarcasticly argue against its use. So there are means to which people or corporations go to to prohibit the use of certain words. I would argue that while it certainly isn't necessary to use the "b" word, it hardly compares to the use of slurs against a particular group of individuals. Thanks for trolling, come again...

I don't get why that issue is made into controversy, when the show has done so much good in it's portrayal of Kurt. The show has had some of the most touching moments when Kurt and his Dad interact. And the Mike story was intentional. It was sad was that his parents crushed his spirit in such a cut and dry manner.

And about freedom of speech. Just because you have the right to carry a gun doesn't mean you get to shoot anyone you want. Actions have consequences. What are you teaching the younger generation? Bullying isn't just about physical violence, most bullying is done in the form of verbal harassment. Children committing suicide is a very real consequence to hurtful language. Never point a loaded gun and pull the trigger unless you know the concequence.

They DO NOT LIKE anything. . .I think they prefer that we bow down to their level of puritanism. . .but bet you those GLADD guys have more skeletons to hide than any of us have, yet they mask it by going to the public saying that a lot of us are a bunch of oppressive insensitive fools.

I find it hard for GLAAD to justify the usage of the word "tranny" as derogatory when Hollywood and the fashion industry are full of gay people. If anything, they should focus less on pointing the finger at others who they think are misusing the word after-the-fact and more on having their own supporters speak out against it in the various fields in which they work before it even makes it on the air.

I think GLAAD has dropped the ball themselves on this matter.

A Tranny is tranny there isn't much more to it that. Here is a show that is cutting edge and doing things that no one else is doing and this is bull. I'm gay and I love the show and have no issue with tranny being used. I'm also a realist. Some people don't understand gay life nor do they want too. It's life real life. Not everyone is going to accept you but as long as they don't attempt to oppress you then it's ok.

yeah...dr. frank-n-furter WAS a tranny! all the trannies i know use the term tranny to refer to their lifestyle. there's a very popular club event in san francisco called trannyshack. it's promoted by trannies. not once have i ever heard this term used as an insult in the same way people use "gay" as an insult. come on, GLAAD, you have more important things to worry about.

This has to be the most level headed comment from a gay dude that I've ever read on CNN. If all gays were like you and I could somehow convince Christians that they're not living the faith by inhibiting free will and hating....maybe we really could get along on this mud ball. Great comment Eric...who want to live in a boring world....PC sucks!!!
