'Dilemma' director will keep gay joke in film

Vince Vaughn's "electric cars are gay" joke may have been cut from the trailer for "The Dilemma," but director Ron Howard says it's staying in the movie.

Despite public outcry from both GLAAD and CNN anchor Anderson Cooper, who declared the words insensitive and harmful, Howard told the Los Angeles Times, "I believe in sensitivity but not censorship."

And so viewers will hear the offending line uttered when the film arrives in theaters in January.

"Our lead character of Ronny Valentine has a mouth that sometimes gets him into trouble and he definitely flirts with the line of what's OK to say. He tries to do what's right but sometimes falls short. Who can't relate to that?" Howard asked. "It is a slight moment in 'The Dilemma' meant to demonstrate an aspect of our lead character's personality, and we never expected it to represent our intentions or the point of view of the movie or those of us who made it."

That said, Howard admitted he enjoys stirring the pot and welcomes discussion and debate.

"I defend the right for some people to express offense at a joke as strongly as I do the right for that joke to be in a film," Howard said. "But if storytellers, comedians, actors and artists are strong-armed into making creative changes, it will endanger comedy as both entertainment and a provoker of thought."

GLAAD president Jarrett Barrios, however, told the Hollywood Reporter he believes Howard's decision is "contributing to the problem. The conversations started as a result of the community’s response to this slur will help schools, media, and parents understand the impact of the word ‘gay’ being used as a pejorative."

Barrios went on, "Hopefully in the future, Universal and Ron Howard will recognize the power of their words and use their films to bring people together rather than drive us apart.”

Don't you people get it? The public was being played by the film's publicity machine. This potential stinker of a flick needed to create "a dilemma" to raise it's buzz-worthiness and save it from tanking at the box office. Nobody would have heard of this film, had this strategy not been employed. Now, the film producers have been able to drive visitors to the studio's website, and promote the storyline and characters – particularly, the lead role and his character flaw of sometimes saying the wrong thing, like, "electric cars are so gay." This has all been a publicity stunt. Free press = priceless.

I'm a gay man and do not take issue with the joke or line. Derogatory or not, PC or not, people talk this way in real life. It is a reflection of our society and culture, not a shaper of it. A director and writer should have the ability to have there characters be represented true to their nature. Besides some gay people fit stereotypes and some do not, but some things are "gay", like being over sensitive to everything being said or shown in entertainment.

What the hell difference does it make – Opie hasn't had a hit since Aunt Bee and Clara made eyes at each other over a Chinese dinner in Mount Pilot. And, of course, excising words like this matter. They are demeaning and insulting and undermine equality, and anyone who doesn't agree with that, is as dense and dim-witted as Gomer Pyle, who, ironically, was played by a gay actor. But I won't go into that. Belaboring a point is so gay.

It's a problem to use "gay" in this way because the movie is a comedy and the line in meant for comedic value, not to display the character as a racist, bigot, etc. People would go CRAZY if he was saying the "N" word in a similar fashion.
Especially in light of the gay bullying and gay suicides that have been on a rise in our nation, I would expect greater responsibility, accountability, and sensitivity from Ron Howard.

I'm against gay bashing or any minority group for that matter, but Howard is right, all this PC stuff is getting out of hand. Where does it end? We now refer to "fat" as "heavy built", "short" as "vertically challenged", "blind" as "sight challenged", what next? Next, we won't be able to portray bald men (or women), talk about pimply-faced teenagers, or what have you. What's interesting is that all those protesting this are probably "straight" and are making all the ruckus not to defend gays, but trying to score political points.

All I know is that it bothers me when my husband uses "That's so gay" for something he doesn't like... my brother *is* gay. Similarly, I cringe every time I hear someone say "That's retarded." Not only is it insensitive, it is weird to bring in an unrelated group to prove the deficiency of something (I didn't like "You're so Jewish!" in the 80s, but the idea behind that was the equation – whether fair or not- between Jews and thrift).

I have to wonder about the intellect of the speaker, if the best thought they can get out is "That's so gay." Even the average 5-year-old has a more precise turn of phrase!

If you advocate removing the word "gay" from media because it's offensive, then to be fair, you have to be for the removal of all offensive language from all media. If you don't, you're a hypocrite. If you call me insensitive for not caring if the word gay is used as an offensive term, I take offense to that and I demand an apology from you. It hurts my feeling to be called insensitive. Thats on par with being called emotionally retarded and we all know that we can't use the word retard.

As I write this, there are 829 comments before mine. 829 people who felt strongly enough to say something. On this article alone. I"m sure there are other articles on other sites that people have commented on as well. What Mr. Howard has done is call attention to a problem. He's done what I always tell people to do. "Offend someone, make them think!" and by that, I mean, don't shield what you say because someone tells you to, if that's what you mean to say. Censorship for the sake of censorship never did any good. What has happened here is that he's used something controversial to draw attention to a problem, in order to get people to HAVE A CONVERSATION about it. When you get people talking, then you get people interacting, then you get people making things happen. WAY TO GO.

It's not about the word being in the film, it was about the word being in "APPROPRIATE FOR ALL AUDIENCES" trailers right around the time of the whole gay bullying thing. It was an example of how pop culture supports that type of behavior. It can be in the movie. The character is a loud-mouthed insensitive jerk. The whole topic is gay. Who cares what a movie character says? Gay/lesbian, overtly religious, agnostic, idiot, or brilliant...it's all irrelevant. Entertainment is just that. Stop shoving your agenda down other people's throats. Imagine what life would be like if we were forced to conform to one ideology–and it was diametrically opposite of our own? I'll take the gay comment for a laugh and you can poke fun at whatever you find humorous.

Simple solution: if you find something like this to be offensive, just don't watch the film. It's not as though there's someone forcing you to see this. Really. You don't have to go and make a big deal about it.

And really, the only way not to offend someone is to have a film with no lines in it. Because if it has lines, someone will say something that someone finds offensive. Ex. all three LOTR films (arguably some of the least offensive films of all time) have the word dwarf in them. Dwarf could be viewed as an offensive word by those with dwarfism. Should that be censored as well?

The fact that "the conversations started as a result of the community’s response to this slur will help schools, media, and parents understand the impact of the word ‘gay’ being used as a pejorative," doesn't sound like this single word in the movie is "contributing to the problem."

Gays use the term "breeder" as a pejorative for straight people all the time (I have lots of gay friends and have heard it used frequently). So, it is OK for a gay person to use a pejorative to demean a member of the straight majority, but not OK for a straight person to use a pejorative to demean a member of the gay minority? Is that what we are to believe? That sounds a little like the stupid idea that only White people can be bigots and racists. This country needs to grow up and abolish this stupid PC nonsense.

I didn't hear Anderson cooper complaining about this type of offensive T.V. but then I also changed the channel on that biased, political tool of a station as well. We all have a choice on what movies we watch, get a life, if you don't like it, don't watch it. We have an election going on right now, go express yourselves in the polls and let go of the petty stuff. I am not gay, however have a gay uncle, he could care less what they say in a film, we are censoring way too much, pretty soon most won't have a mind to make their own decisions, they will wait for someone to tell them what to "think" god help us with this non-sense. I may not like Jesus in a jar of urine - actually, I don't feel one way or the other about it - but I strongly defend the right to create such stuff, even if it's nonsense. JNC33 you're wrong. Calling something that you feel is stupid "gay" is calling all gay people "stupid". If you are calling something you feel is uncool "gay" your calling all gay people "uncool". It is exactly like using the word "retarded" to refer to anything other than someone who is developmentally challenged.

As a gay man I defend Ron Howard's right to use the word in the film, but I don't like it. In this current climate where we're trying to understand why teens and young adults are committing suicide after being outed one way or another; we should not have a protagonist of any movie, no matter how openly flawed that protagonist is, using "gay" as a pejorative. If a "hero" says it, kids will copy it even if it is wrong. I'm all for stirring things up in a public forum, but only to raise awareness of a problem. Ron Howard isn't challenging the status quo – he's being part of it here. When kids learn to say these things – other kids get hurt. Ron Howard has the right to do it, but it is irresponsible.

Pick your battles wisely or else none of your platforms will be taken seriously. The fact that this has even registered a blip on the gay radar makes me wonder about GLADD's ability to fight for gay causes that really matter (i.e. equal rights for gay partners, and discrimination in the workplace). I don't think it was a calculated line to offend gays, but it will be used by all for the publicity – by gay groups. It won't hurt the movie, either. The sign we will probably need to get used at that point will be the middle finger, judging from the comment boards.

The use of the word gay and retarted, usually implies something is weird or different. We should all, by now realize that there are going to be people that refuse to accept things that make them question themselves and impose alternative thought or acceptance. Gays have to realize that by holding themselves out for their differences, that not all are going to treat them with acceptance. The fact that some people have used these words to represent things that are not mainstream, doesn't make them acceptable, but it does make the story very real to those that grew up with these expressions. The mere fact that these words have become an "off the cuff expression" is a testament to human nature.

Break down barriers, don't paint them brighter for all to see. Make this something to learn from, make the change happen.

Saying that the censorship of the pejorative "gay" somehow stunts creativity, is an insult to creative people. That's like saying that the end of the manufacture of Black lawn-jockeys has somehow stunted the future of American sculpture. I'm very tired of writers/comedians receiving carte blanche from American society in the name of 1st Amendment rights, or that any and all censorship will eventually lead to Fascism. These insult comics/writers continue to hide behind Free Speech, unwilling to own up that they have an ignorance and/or are insensitive. Where is it written (and they treat this as if it were some religious tenet or axiom) that comedy is the best medicine for bringing our "society" together? This overused statement is in deep need of a sociological reevaluation. If the only way a writer can make his or her fictional characters communicate their faults is through insult-comedy, then it shows a lack of talent/range/care on the part of the writer, regardless of style. Artists and media craftsmen have a deep responsibility too; they can't just create whatever they want and lay all blame and responsibility on the viewer for interpretation and application.

In 'idiocracy' the characters constantly said the main character 'talked like a f_g' - and that was funny not because it was insulting to gays but because it showed how dumb the character saying that was. There is a huge difference about making fun AT something/someone/a group (i.e., being mean) and making fun ABOUT something/someone/a group. Archie Bunker was a CHARACTER, that highlighted a lot of ignorant bigotry, at that time. He was a FUNNY, LOVEABLE character, who made SOME people stop and think about how narrow-minded and intolerant they, themselves, were being. Way to go Ron. Political correctness has gone way too far in this country. Everyone makes jokes and says things they shouldn't about others. Movies in some cases are made to show what life is like. One comment said movie characters use God's name in vain all the time and no one cares, and they are correct. So if a movie character says a negative comment about gays it is because people do that in real life, so get over it.

I disagree with the position that a passing "gay" comment such as this one ... coming from a fictional character that's boorish in other phases of his personna ... detracts from the dialogue that's going on right now. I suggest GLAAD do a better job picking their battles.

You have no basis that being gay is a choice. When you wake up as a child every day and struggle with why you're different and deal with it for years, then you can say being gay is a choice. Until that day, STFU...

Ok if being gay is not a choice chew on this: God gave everyone their free agency. Now with that being said why would God give everyone their free agency to choose who they want to be and what they want to do and then retract and say you know i think i'm going to make this child gay as soon as he is born and not give him a choice. So it seems to me the gay people who believe in God but saying that they were born gay are actually calling God a hypocrite.

I don't get offended because I know it isn't intended to put down gay people. It is merely a term. Most smart people are aware that it doesn't mean gay people are bad or disgusting, even if that might be the reason for it's original use. Who knows. Does anyone know why this term began in the first place? Do we know its origins. Highly unlikely. Trying to sensor this film is like trying to sensor comedians for using gay material in their acts. Anyway, try not to be so offended or worried. This country has come a long ways and I don't think this one word should be our main concern.

I hardly think the sentence "electric cars are so gay" is what's causing so much pain in this world. Maybe we should focus just a little bit on real threats – bullying in schools, violence in every city in America, the economy, etc. Guess that would be pretty stupid when we can be more concerned about a joke. It's may not be everyone's idea of a good joke, but no need to make something bigger than it really is.

Family guy makes fun of straight white males, minorities, chairs, cars, computers, etc etc. Family guy even made fun of the holocaust (way worse then saying "Electric Cars are gay"). But we have freedom of speech, and being PC all the time (especially in movies/literature is wrong). In some movies they kill people, which is obviously way worse then one comment. If an actor playing Hilter says something offensive in a movie it's just his character. This is exactly the same. Although I do notice that sometimes a character will say something offensive just for the sake of saying something offensive. It's like when you watch a movie and the guy swears or curses god once – but never again. It's like they just don't want a G rating so they throw in an F, or they aren't Christian directors so they think Jesus Christ used as a curse isn't offending anyone. It is.

I am sick of the oversensitivity in today's society. People have no knack for subtlety or satire. If you make light of a racial or ethnic stereotype, pointing out how ridiculous it is, people will accuse you of reinforcing that stereotype without applying any critical thinking whatsoever.

This is what happens when a society decides that it wants to stick to news bites and kneejerk reactions. Remember the outcry when Will Smith said something about Hitler, and everyone got up in arms about it without even realizing the true meaning of his words?

If you can't laugh at yourself, if you can't find the irony in a situation, then you have no business watching television, reading books, or watching movies.

I thought we lived in a country where free speech and free thought was encouraged, rather than having people being knocked for voicing their opinion. Is it a word that should be thrown around irresponsibly? Not at all. But is it part of our lexicon that will eventually die out based merely on public awareness? Absolutely.

If people don't agree with the gay movement, power to them. But this has nothing to do with acceptance. It's a word. Next step will be burning books that feature commentary that isn't deemed politically correct. I'm all for giving gays the same rights that everyone else in this country has. And that will thankfully come in the near future...but we didn't get to where we are now as a country by being thin skinned, bottled in fear, or turning a blind eye to a large percentage that has a certain view. Rather than bringing everyone together despite their differences, we've divided our country and blocked out those who don't agree with us. It's a movie, and it's a mirror of our culture.

If it offends you, look deep into your own beliefs and see where you think you may have gone wrong. Only within ourselves can we create a more positive society...you can't force it on others.

I believe the United States and Canada were "founded" in such a way that provides the freedom of speech. However, more and more that simple freedom... is being pushed to its limits and changed so that everything remains "Politically Correct". We are no longer afforded the freedom of speech as we must all now apparently consider the feeling of the next guy or gal. Gay, in this case has been added to the list of "bad" words and thus no one should mutter the word "gay" unless its not used in any sense of a joke or off color remark.

I struggle with Political Correctness every year in December – during this month when Merry Christmas is the thing to say – I am not allowed to utter these words unless I hear them first.. This is due to political correctnes...

This is for Dan. Thank you for proving a point of view I support. When you used the word stupid in the context you used it in, that just proved all the statements made about how the gay community is over-reacting. We are talking about censorship to support a lifestyle.
I was using comedy to lighten the situation. You victimized yourself, and you should get some help for that. Also, calling someone stupid is like calling someone gay. You know it doesn't help bring us together.

Is this actually a serious matter? I am shocked and appalled that this is turning into such a big issue!! The word gay is NOT being used in a derogatory way in this movie and even if it was... What is the big deal. It's a movie!!
What about all the movies out there that portray a part of history like the Holocaust or times of slavery or any sort of war movie. Anyone ever heard of Schindlers List? I can name a few derogatory terms used in that movie that were way more offensive.
The fact is many movies are meant to raise awareness. And some movies use real terms used in everyday life that are, in this case, not meant to hurt someone.
If you try to take away freedom of speech then you might as well take away freedom in general. This is a lame attempt to make a point.
2 thumbs up to Howard for using his freedom of speech and not backing down.

There have been many other examples of this use of the word "gay" in a derogatory manner...One recent one, on Glee last year, Kurt (who is gay) said, "Mr. Shue, that song is gay", and he did not mean it was happy!! I don't recall GLAAD being all up in arms over that utterance of the word "gay", and Glee has a large viewership, so potentially lots of people heard that and should be offended by it, or hurt by it. Lighten up a little, it is being used to illustrate the point that the character is a bonehead, and that seems acceptable. He isin't going to do a tirade about how being gay is wrong, he is just going to use the word inappropriately, and it's not a "G" rated fild...in short, GET OVER YOURSELVES GLAAD

There is nothing disingenous about the fear losing our freedom of speech and expression. If we aren't allowed to voice our opinions for fear we'll hurt someone's feelings, that's censorship, whether legislative or societal.

You're crying over a line spoken by a fictional caracter in a fictional story. Instead of getting up in arms, why not use this movie character as a means to point a spotlight on ignorance and intolerance? Just don't ruin entertainment for the rest of us.

There are several things that I do not understand here. Gays refer to themselves and each other as "Gays" and when they come out of the closet, presumably they tell people that they are "gay." Then there's the whole "gay pride" kick. Yet when someone refers to an inanimate object as being "gay" then you insist that the very term you use to describe yourselves is derogatory.

The "G-word," unlike the "N-word," has many other meanings that applied well before the word eventually was applied toward those attracted to their gender. In that regard, the "G-word" is much like the "F-word" as it's one of the few words that can be used interchangeably as a noun, verb, adjective, adverb, etc. The "G-word" then, is very much like those that are gay because they have to adapt to their surroundings to fit in, just as everyone else does.

One more point is that when people use the term "Retarded" to describe something other than a person born with a mental disability, nobody really intends to hurt or offend "retarded" people. In fact, I would say that only the most soul-less heathens of society would purposely offend those born that way. The same can be said with the use of the "G-word" in this movie line. Was it INTENDED to be derogatory toward gays? No. It's meant to be derogatory toward the Electric Car as the word "Gay" has evolved also to include the meaning of "stupid or ridiculous."

If you doubt whether or not the word "Gay" has developed so many meanings, I recommend listening to the opening jingle to "The Flintstones" where they joyously sing, "Have a Yabba-Dabba-Doo time. A Dabba-Doo time. We'll have a gay old time!" So you see? "Gay" also means "Yabba-Dabba-Doo."

You should be happy that Vaughn's character used the word and then go buy an Electric Car, because really the loser with this movie line is the environment.

The point is that the word gay isn't being used to mean happy or "yabba dabba do". He is not saying that electric cars are happy and good times. He is saying that they are stupid, thus giving the negative connotation that gay=stupid. When people use the word retarded, unless they are referring to a process such as "the sponge retarded the further spread of oil" they are most certainly referring to the mentally challenged. If someone says that's "retarded", they are using the word in a negative way insinuating that something is again stupid"

When a "word" is considered so offensive that it cannot be uttered, then someone or group is using it to promote their victimization. Can't use the N word unless you're black? Can't joke about gays, stuttering, the mentally retarded, the handicapped (cripples), ethic groups, etc.? Depending on the context, it may be rude, it may be socially unacceptable, but should not be forbidden. Children are an exception and should definitely not be harassed or bullied. The use of these words is an indication of something wrong in society but individuals should be allowed to use them. It more or
less calibrates the person using the word.

Censorship is a much bigger issue in this country than the need for political correctness with reference to any perjorative.. I agree there is a civil rights issue in this country with the treatment of gays, but in the end, change advocates are trying trying to systemically strong arm society into baring the weight of raising and managing kids and individuals with poor coping skills- when it should start and end with proper parenting and or the individuals themselves. Gay rights will happen because it's right, not because people are coerced into one rigid vernacular at the further expense of free speech.

A lot of people are making a big deal about the recent suicides and school bullying that CNN reported on. In truth, LGBT groups are one of the highest groups prone to suicide. It is a sad truth, but there is no crisis, just recent news media trending. 3000 people commit suicide each day, every 100 minutes a teenager commits suicide. Those numbers haven't changed but media fixation has grown tremendously. I am all for the recent public awareness but the fact of the matter is that the media only did this because a few white young people killed themselves, and this is an excuse for a story that will convince people there is a crisis and the white youth are in danger.

But I digress. I am all for free speech, and I firmly believe that all is fair in comedy and there should never be any limitations. GLAAD are morons to think a little joke in a movie will somehow tear us apart, there are plenty of more harmful things out there from fundamentalist hate mongering to irresponsible news media. Filmmakers and studios should be held accountable when something is harmful, but this is not the case, it is just a stupid joke that should not represent the entire movie or be used by GLAAD for publicity.

I agree with Ron Howard! Just because certain people are offended, it doesn't mean he needs to be subjected to censorship or arm twisted into expressing his own ideas/plots/characters in his films.
If people don't like it..let them not watch it.. but I hate how the left always wants to ram-rod their sensibilities and sensitivities on to others.
the country as a whole does not approve of a gay life style.. let time do it's work.. and eventually it will be accepted.. till then.. if people make jokes about it..let them do so.

Not sure why this is even an issue. We see this in movies ALL THE TIME. See the below quote from the 40 Year Old Virgin:

    Cal: You're gay, now?
David: No, I'm not gay. I'm just celibate.
Cal: I think... I mean, that sounds gay. I just want you to know this is, like, the first conversation of, like, three conversations that leads to you being gay. Like, there's this and then in a year it's like, "Oh, you know, I'm kinda gonna want to get back out there, but I think I like guys," and then there's the big, "Oh, I'm... I'm... I'm a gay guy now."
David: You're gay for saying that.
Cal: I'm gay for saying that?
David: You know how I know you're gay?
Cal: How? How do you know I'm gay?
David: Because you macramed yourself a pair of jean shorts.
Cal: You know how I know *you're* gay? You just told me you're not sleeping with women any more.
David: You know how I know you're gay?
Cal: How? Cause you're gay? And you can tell who other gay people are?
David: You know how I know you're gay?
    Cal: How?
    David: You like Coldplay.

I'm Italian AND Jewish, my wife's Polish AND Jewish, my kids are Polish, Italian Jews. So, which joke do you want to hear? We've heard them all and most of the time (by far) chuckle at the humorous stereotypes. Sometimes we lament the more insensitive humor. We always defend the right of the teller to do so and NEVER get on a soapbox about a perceived injustice. We cannot change our heritage nor do we want to as we are proud of who we are.

If being gay is such a hardship, then shut up and don't go about flaunting it at every opportunity. Pride doesn't mean dressing in ridiculously provocative costumes and marching half naked in a parade then crying about being insulted. Pride is knowing who you and living your life as the best person you can be.

the difference between saying something is "gay" and calling someone a "stupid breeder" is that there is no chance an offhand slur like that would put a straight person in any physical danger. In fact, a gay hating straight person just may see that movie and that one line will spur their underlying hatred into action. who knows? but the interesting things is how ron howard is obviously so completely out of touch with what is even remotely funny. What a shame mankind has gone so far it doesn't know what is really important and what is not. Sure, all the comments and jokes are fun. Everybody gets a chance to be witty and clever. So what about this one-liner? It's just a movie, it's just one line. Good people, fellow humans, it is not the one line, it is the line here, a law there, a truly atrocious remark made by a co-worker, your boss, teacher, classmate, your parents and relatives. It's the death of a thousand cuts, and it's killing children in our country.
So if gay people seem a little "sensitive", try educating yourself a little. Despite and asertion by young Mr Spartacus (and that name is SO gay) that gay people have the tight to get married, adopt children, etc. there are laws in most stes in the US that specifically rule out gay people from legal marriage. In many states you can still lose your job for being gay,and get kicked out of your apaprtment with no legal recourse.
Please, just stop and think for a moment. Childern are killing themselves rather than put up with the hatred and isolation that face them every day. Every little cut counts.

I am gay, and quite frankly, this issue is gay. I mean c'mon. I hear on a day to day basis, the many many many uses of the word. So what? If you've studied comedy, you know that minorities use self induced humor as a means of lessening the seriousness of hateful speech. If you read much of our classic litereature you have undoubtedly encounted hateful words time and time again as a means of providing people a deeper understanding of the words. Sweeping things under the carpet, which is what censorship is about, doesn't answer anything.

But really, we have developed a culture in which you aren't important unless you are always in a state of "BEING OFFENDED!". We have a fetish with this childishness... You cant say this or that you have to be PC. Its making america a neutered society where we fire people in the media for their oppinions or "words". They are so afraid of losing advertising dollars from these "groups" that have fake outrage over words that they censor everything. Its sickening and I applaud anyone who doesn't back down to these idiots.

50 years ago gay meant "fun" hell even the flinstones use it in the intro song "we'll have a gay ole time". Oh and by the way I truly believe these "fake outrages" are just being done to get their propaganda out through the media. No, you can still laugh at black people, brown people, white people, yellow people, red people, Jewish people, Christian people, Scientology people, foreign people. If that's something you enjoy doing & take great pleasure in. But, of course, one has to ask, "Is Ron Howard inviting you to laugh at gay people?" If the answer is "yes", then GLAAD is right to pressure him in this way. After all, if you & yours are so readily eager to laugh at gay people, then Ron Howard inviting you to laugh at gay people not only perpetuates but also condones and promotes your bigotry. Meanwhile, can we say "electric cars are so Anglo!" so that we can all laugh at white people?

It all depends on it's usage and by whom. If a villan or an idiot uses it, it further proves on a subconscious level that only bad people or idiots use such terms and make such jokes. If the hero is throwing terms like that around, I'd completely agree that it's bad for society. So before you bellyache about it, consider the context. If you disagree with this and still think it should be taken out or censored (which is what you're doing) then you have a very real problem with sensitivity and your thought process is illogical and YOU are the actual problem. GLAAD should be using more films as a tool to get the word out that only idiots and heathens use these terms and leave everyone else alone! Tarantino's racist characters are usually bad and/or some sort of pig and overall not someone to emulate...yet fine actors who are also African American continue to be drawn to his writing and his projects...be smart people, use hollywood to your advantage. Let the idiots in films say stupid things to illustrate the point, because being the idiot trying to censor only makes the point that YOU'RE the idiot.

I think what everyone is missing here is that it's not the use of the word "gay" that is offensive. It is that the line makes a prejudiced assumption about a group of people. It assumes that all gay people drive these little electric cars. It stereotypes gays. I know many gay people who drive trucks and look, talk and act just like any hetero out there. It's not an act for them, it is the way they are. To some, its no different than their eye color. It's when everyone starts assuming that gays act, look, talk a certain way that the slippery slope starts to get traveled.

Just cause your Gay does not give you the right to tell other people what they have the right to put in their movies, blogs or any other place where freedom of speech is able to be expressed. And i think its wrong that people are even telling grade school kids about gay people at all that is a parents job not the techers. As a parent i would be very upset to learn if a teacher or some one at my kids school took it upon themselves to explain gay people to my kid. I like Howard and figure he's a pretty progressive person due to the stuff he's done in the past. But I think he's wrong on this one. Time to put the word to rest the way it's used pejoratively in this film. The word, the way it's used, is demeaning on a number of levels and – yes – allows people old and young to use the word in a very nasty way. My father is one of the world's biggest bigots and uses this word (and worse) to spout his hatred but he actually thinks he's being respectful.

And I'm sick to death of people using the 'politically correct' phrase. There is no such thing as 'politically correct'. That is a phrase dreamed up by racists and bigots to use when they don't have a defense for their attacks and ugliness. So they attack the offended and try to turn it around. Conservatives use the phrase all the time to back up their prejudiced agendas.

I suppose GLAAD and kd down the thread here wants there to be an end to movies based on real people, because these are things that real people say. Through constant narrow mindedness, the politically correct have devolved into the mentally retarded. Oops! I suppose now The ARC and kd are going to put me on report! This isn"t a speech about someone's opinions. It's a story, and stories evolve around plots that are evolved by characters. This is something that the character in the movie would say, at least at the beginning of the movie before he evolves into a better person. The idea that we can no longer tell stories about flawed characters is ludicrous, especially since every single one of us has a flawed character, even those snooty noses amongst us who think they don't. What you mean is, what would people think if someone said, "electric cars are "insert N word here)". That doesn't make any sense at all. The word gay also has been used to refer to something being stupid or silly. The N word has never had another meaning other than what it is. So you can't really use that as a comparison.

I am a white, straight, Christian, female and I am offended everyday – but I don't see anyone marching the streets for me. I don't care either. It's life. Get over yourselves.

Although I may agree with the notion that this movie should not be censored...you're wrong about one thing. The whole purpose of calling something or someone "gay" in the context you speak of, is to make fun of it. It's not exactly the highlight of someone's life to constantly be reminded that they're the butt of the joke 24 hours per day.

The last time I checked, you could get married in all 50 states. Last time I checked, a straight couple could walk hand in hand without fear of persecution or threat of bodily harm. Last I checked, Matthew Shepard wasn't a straight man, kidnapped, tortured and murdered by 2 gay men. You don't need to protest because you have it all. Yes, there are issues between straight and gay. However, our journey through life is much more difficult. We deal, we adapt and we overcome. Continued sarcasm, name calling and diminution of our character doesn't help.

Really? Someone is in your face 24 hours a day making fun of you? Interesting.
Of all the things that should offend you or concern you, this should be the last of them. How about worrying about people who are dying everyday from incurable diseases, or the men and women who fight to protect you, or the children who are starving or get beat by their parents everyday.
I don't feel sorry for you.

Its you that should be ashamed of yourself for not looking at the other side. Continue to support ignorance and you become that which you turn a blind eye too. Lastly, because I do not have time to exchange anymore banter with the likes of you, was the last time you found a cure for an incurable disease? Its funny you mention that.... to a gay man that knows more about incurable disease than you will ever understand. Have a good life. Living in ignorance is bliss, eh?

I have good friends that are gay. I am not ignorant – because I see that there are bigger problems to deal with than a stupid sentence in a movie. There are things in reference to being gay that should offend you, this is not one of them.
You should be upset when a gay individual is killed, or when gays are denied marriage. That is upsetting. Not this

I have a gay friend who uses "gay" as a pejorative all the time. He's called me gay. Do I get offended? No, because I know what he is actually trying to convey.

Language changes. "Idiot" used to be a word used to describe the mentally handicapped. No one bats an eye when it is used today to describe generally stupid people. I would never refer to a mentally handicapped person as "retarded" because I believe the word has moved into the same realm as "idiot". People who get upset about it are those who actually think "retarded" and "mentally handicapped" mean the same thing. I don't think they do. To me something that is "retarded" is something that is needlessly confusing or that flies in the face of common sense, i.e. "My computer's operating system is retarded."

The line can only be banned if it in any way commented on Islam, Muslim, or Mohammed. Apparently, those are the only people in the USA right now who can "convince" people that censorship and violating the 1st amendment rights is a "smart" thing to do...like the cartoonist who suggested the "Draw Mohammend Day", who is currently in hiding. The Gay community does not have that kind of influence.

The issue isn't whether or not it is acceptable to use that word since that right is protected by the 1st amendment. Ron Howard had a decision to make and as a creative artist he knows that he could have used another word used to describe the character's persona. He fell short of what is appropriate. I'm neither gay nor a fan of Ron Howard but when we begin to lose our sensitivity toward any one group in our evolving society, then we regress from what should be humanity's ultimate goal of achieving spiritual awakening. Ron Howard should know this. Shame on him.

I have been a long time supporter of the premise gays are born with a genetic reason they are gay. I fully support that with the clear understanding other factors such as environment and an amount of choice also play roles. One can only hope they can find suitable treatments for both of these genetic defects and rid the worlkd of both scourges.

Gays and lesbians do not own the word "gay". It has different meanings. When teenagers refer to something as "gay" they just mean it's "lame". There was an excellent episode of South Park that covered this same topic, however they used the word "fa&" to mean that something is lame. In the case of that episode it was loud Harley riders. We as a community provide the meaning of words. And the meanings are ever changing.

What if he'd said something about religion, be it Mormom, Catholic, Protestant or Muslim? How about if there was a crack against Mexicans, Whites, Blacks or Asians? Would you still be offended? I'm sure some of you would. Saying an electric car is gay is not a big deal. If you're offended by that please don't ever watch Blazing Saddles by Mel Brooks because he made fun of everybody in that film and if you're that sensitive you'll gouge out your eyes and jump off a bridge to relieve your hurt feelings.

I'm a gay male, and I use the word "gay" all the time when saying something is stupid or lame. I think everyone needs to lighten up a little in this country, and not get so offended all the time. I appreciate the the gay rights movement, but I personally think they need to be reasonable and pick the important battles, not something as trivial as what is said in a comedy movie. Everyone has something that places them in a "minority" group– large nose, color of their skin, where they grew up, economic status, etc.... If we are so hypersensitive that we worry whatever is said will potentially offend one of these groups, then I promise you we will all live boring, miserable lives of self censorship. Oh, and a large part of the problem? The media for actually making this a story and for covering it on national news. This world is a large place, I refuse to believe there isn't more substantial news to report, and I would prefer to read that, but unfortunately it's hard to find a news source that isn't so gay.... see? hope I didn't offend 🙂

It is a shame that the public has become so PC that they cannot conceive of a character in a movie not being supportive of the gay community. We have in real life people who are against gays. We have people who are biased and bigots and who are just plain mean. Will films and film clips now be required to have a disclaimer that states the characters in this movie do not represent the political or social views of the director, producers, actors, etc? Get real people. Film can be many things including provocative. It can push boundaries, push us to the brink and beyond where we care comfortable. Let characters in film be flawed, be bad, be politically in-correct. If you want a feel good movie about being gay, go for it, make it. All movies do not have to be politically correct to be good and satisfying to watch.

Exactly! If they used the N word there would be an uproar. Maybe if gay people were actually treated equally in this country they could enjoy a self-deprecating joke like everyone else. As it stands they aren't treated equally in this country, so they DO have to fight every time someone singles them out by using the word gay as a pejorative. Every step counts. Besides, how is calling an electric car gay a joke? It's not. It just singles out gay people as a negative.

I don't believe in censorship either. It is seriously sad when people are so sensitive that they find one line in a film to be the "anti Christ" of quotes. If groups like GLAAD find this too "offensive" then please practice what you preach and tell all gays in this country to do nothing in public that may "contribute to the problem". This means anything that supports the stereotypes, anything that maybe offensive, anything that maybe cause someone to privately think "that is awful". Once that is done publicly then maybe you will have a leg to stand on.

EVERYONE CALM DOWN! LOL Listen, in America, we make fun of religion, people, places, things, that's just the way it is. You really want to get a group all fired up you have to do one of two things. 1.) Make any statement that the "gays" will get upset over. or 2.) Make any statement that will offend the Muslims. The two worst things you can possibly do in America! I'm sick of the whiners and complainers, I'm sick of everyone openly making fun of Christians but, we can't draw a cartoon of Mooohamed.

Everyone needs to grow a backbone and get over it. If you are gay, then be gay but, I don't have to like it, agree with it, or censor myself so I don't hurt your feelings. I don't care what you say or think of me, so I don't care what I say or think of you. Thanks

His use of the word 'gay' is to show the sensitivities and the point of view of the character. There are crude characters in the world who use it synonymously with derogatory terms. It doesn't make it right – but the moment we don't allow for characterization in storytelling is the moment that storytelling becomes bland, unrealistic, and 'safe'.

If Ron Howard was in some way preaching/teaching that this was a proper use of the word, I would understand the push back. But Ron Howard is a good man and I think we can trust that he is in no way condoning this as proper behavior.

This isn't about being thin skinned. It's about the use of derogatory language regarding a group that is NOT treated equally and is currently fighting for equality. Once they have equality, the jokes are acceptable. Until then, the use of "gay" as a negative supports the mentality that the language is OK to use in common speech. There are plenty of other ways to get the point across that the character lacks social graces and to avoid furthering the hurt this group of people has to endure while fighting for equality.

    • I'm In This Movie!!!!

So they originally were going to say the line, "Electric Cars are so phat." But all the sound technicians got all mad about it. So they changed it to the line, "Electric cars are so ginger." But of course the red heads all said that doesn't make sense because everyone knows gingers melt in the sun. So they changed it to, "Electric Cars are so black." and the guy working the boom mic was like, "Ain't no black people buying electric cars." And the hair guy goes, "Now if it were, Electric Slide is so black." then yeah it would be accurate. And everyone pretty much agreed on that fact. So, then they changed it to, "Electric cars are so blonde." but the 85 blondes in this particular scene were all like, "Wait how do you drive them if they have to be plugged in to run?" So we all came to conclusion that blondes probably couldn't figure out how to work one. So finally, one of the costume guys, goes well how about, "Electric cars are so gay?" And everyone goes "why?" And he says, "Because electric cars blow." And all the gay guys working on the set, helping as production assistants, and helping as extras all agreed that they did in fact blow. And it was settled.

Freedom of speech, freedom of expression and freedom of choice. Stop trying to make the rest of us in America live to your ideals!

I've always liked Ron Howard, and now I respect him even more. Freedom of expression, and to hell with the politically correct thought police. Bravo!

I'm gay and I really don't see the big deal, it's a joke for crying out loud! People shouldn't get so offended so easily and if you don't like it, don't watch it. That is the benefit of living in a free country.

GLAAD president Jarrett Barrios needs to realize that this is comment made in a movie that falls full well in line with the charcter's personality (an iditot). GLAAD should be promoting his saying it as an excellent example of how only idiots utter such phrases. Instead of whiners, By throwing the "WE are offended" card, GLAAD shoots itself in the foot and does not promote tolerance. Instead, it promotes its own brand of intolerance.
