Taylor Swift fans petition for national holiday

Taylor Swift’s most vocal fans (a.k.a. tween girls) quickly realized they wouldn’t be first in line to buy the singer’s new album on October 25 – they’d be in school. So they turned to their favorite medium to get the release date declared a national holiday.

A Twitter petition, or Twitition, was started last week for all Swifties. The website states their cause:

“Help persuade Swiftie's parents to let the true Swifties stay home from school, or at least half of the school day, on October 25th, 2009, in order to buy Taylor's 'Speak Now' album when store doors open. Please Sign!”

Of course, they got the year wrong. And only 158 people have joined the cause so far. But you can’t let tiny details like that stand in the way of true fandom.

The fans need to be in school since they aren't sure what year it is. And most will download the music anyway. Some will cut classes anyway.

I guess Taylor Swift is wanting to let us all know that she's grownup by writing lyrics seemingly to indicate that she's no saint with her new " Dear John " song. At least she wants us to believe it was bad boy John Mayer. Maybe this is better that wearing feathers and dancing around inside of a birdcage screaming I'm no longer a child star.

This is funny! What a difference a year makes! Most of her "fans" only bought her music because of the Kanye West incident. This was their way of getting back at Kanye. But there was one little thing that they all forgot. TAYLOR SWIFT SUCKS!! Lets be real most of yall dont even like country music and you know it. I know Kanye is just sitting back laughing at all of you! Well you all got what u wanted. A crappy, annoying, wanna be 16 years old, no talent having, "innocent", 6 ft tall, ugly so called singer. ENJOY! Payback is somethin else. What up Kanye!

The only thing preventing me from NEVER again visiting CNN's site for news is the overwhelming, almost unanimous response to the latest PR strategy bought and paid for by this person's family and PR team. But now that I've thought about it, the New York Times web site is looking better and better ...

I've never really sat through an entire Taylor Swift song, but frankly all if this publicity for her just annoys me and makes me NOT want to know or hear any of her work. Ever since the Kanye incident...get over it and her...PLEASE. There are far more intelligent, talented, and significant artists...people...and events in the United States out there that deserve the recognition. Enough!!!! Sooooo sick of hearing about this girl every other day!!!!!

ok, If I have to work on National Popcorn Day then they need to go to school on that day...... To quote a phrase by my 15 year old daughter OMG. This is the biggest joke I have ever seen. Little Miss Swift has done nothing to enhance the music industry, so why in H$!! would we want to give her this type of praise. I am all for enhancing education through music, but this is a little too much.

Might as well take the day off. After all, they have made Christmas shopping not only a holiday the day after Thanksgiving, but they have practically made it a requirement. They even cover the shopping as teh headline story on all news networks. Why should an album release be any different?

I think it should be a federal holiday. We should all get the day off because she's just that good. I mean, culture is really a big deal to this country and we are headed in the right direction musically and artistically. I mean, none of our pop culture "artists" perpetuates hypocrisy, mental laziness and mediocrity. No reason to ever go to work/school again as long as Taylor Swift is putting out good tunes for all to hear. It's kind of like when Jesus was born. Or better yet, Kind of like when Martin Luther King Jr was born. OR celebrating all the dead soldiers for Memorial Day.

I just can't believe where our priorities have gone. America, let's grow back some of our balls PLEASE. Just because this mediocre musician can, in fact, put out notes that are on a scale doesn't mean that what she is saying is worth anything. Since when does that matter? I see talent as a full package. Just because this girl has "talent", she is worth something? I see talent as being able to produce/write music but also say something to the extent of being important, or at least make headway towards the expansion of some thought. Just because she is marketable doesn't mean she has talent. That means that she is marketable. And just because she is marketable doesn't mean she has talent. She's just a cute-ish girl who happened to be in the right place at the right time and has been sucked into the horrible world of American Pop Culture.

All judgment of talent aside, because that isn't the issue here, all of these fans have 2 alternative options to just trying to get out of school, and both are fairly obvious... Go to Wal-Mart at midnight, cause the CD won't have a single thing on it that needs to be edited off, or just buy it online via iTunes, or whatever your preference is...

Taylor is another manufactured 'artist', as so many are today. Well marketed, but a shell. Sad that she had an opportunity to really become something of substance and has been packaged to be just a perennial 13 year old, totally distraught that a boy / man does not share her fantasy of them in a relationship with her. There is nothing 'there' and the sooner the PR team let her slide back into oblivion the better.

For different tastes, there are different colors. Personally I do not care for her. The real issue here is the sad fact that many of our youth care more for singers and athletes then themselves. Education has gone down the drain. Parents have stopped being parents. No wonder this country's fall from grace is more apparent with each passing day.

Come on. Just a bunch of kids who are getting really excited over a record. Of -course- this isn't worthy of a national holiday. Of course a new album isn't worth ditching school over, but young kids don't have the same priority system we adults have. That's one of the jobs of being a parent – actual parenting and setting boundaries.

These kids aren't brainless, they aren't morons. They're just excited, even if that excitement is clouding their judgment. Once again, that comes back to the parenting thing and setting boundaries.

As for Taylor Swift, I can't believe how cruel too many of you are. Her songs are fun and they strike a chord with her target audience. If they don't suit you, who cares? It's tween music, for god's sake, nothing more than that. She may not be an earthshaking talent, but she -is- a talent even if you don't care for her style.

Gifted musician & song writer...but cant carry a tune in a bucket. She's done nothing miraculous to warrant a national holiday, & frankly, why is this news? She's a kid, her fans are little kids, kids are generally dumb, enough said.

To those talking about how Taylor Swift has no talent – 1) her fanbase is "tween" girls, so your critisism makes you sound like you're a 16 yr old music elitist in a band that people just "don't get", 2) she's made millions over multiple albums, so obviously someone likes her music, and 3) get over yourself – her music isn't the Beatles, but it also isn't as self involved and pretentious as most "true musicians" outthere – it's music, it's for enjoyment – that's the point

Is no one old enough to remember Milli Vanilli? They also sold millions of albums and turned out to be complete frauds.

The fact that she's sold millions of albums and made millions of dollars just means that there's lots of stupid, tasteless people out there with money to waste...or tons of bad parents who will buy their kids anything to shut them up.

CNN has gone seriously downhill with the content of their website and I for one can no longer justify using this site as a source for serious news. Tucker, You are so right!! The girl can't cary a tune without electronic help, even then it grates on the nerves. We all need a break from Taylor Swift, maybe a year or two. She thinks she is still in High School as her songs project.

I don't know why she is listed as a country singer, she is no more country than Lady Gaga or Miss Piggy. I really hope the people voting for the Country Music award shows, use a little common sense and realize that this is a no talent, mega hyped, wanna-be singer. Give us a break, just saying....

Hi guys...it's me Taylor. I know you all hate me, but I just want to say my voice IS horrible live and I even know it. I've just managed to sell millions of albums out of sheer LUCK. All my songs are for my Tinkerbell fans who are 15 yrs. of age or younger. I sing about immature, childish things b/c I haven't really gone out there and lived life yet. And my songs all sound the same b/c I only "sing" about broken romances.....I always fall in love with some guy who finds me unbelievably annoying, leaves me, and I am left devastated trying to understand why.....
