Jon Stewart responds to Rick Sanchez comments

"The Daily Show" host Jon Stewart had a good laugh at Rick Sanchez's expense this weekend, making light of the former CNN anchor's recent departure over controversial comments he made about Jews and Stewart.

On Friday, CNN issued a statement that Sanchez – who said during a radio interview that Stewart is bigoted and made other statements about Jews and the media - was no longer with the company. The network thanked Sanchez for his years of service.

At the Night of Too Many Stars benefit in New York City on Saturday, host Stewart urged people to donate to autism education, but cautioned, "If you went on radio and said the Jews control the media... you may want to hold on to your money."

However, Stewart did have a solution for Sanchez: "All he has to do is apologize to us," he said, "and we'll hire him back."

Not to be outdone, David Letterman made a surprise cameo at the benefit, telling Stewart that he decided to stop by because he was in the neighborhood, "helping Rick Sanchez clean out his office."

You can't have freedom of speech and be politically correct. Racism existed from the begining of times and shall forever remain. It's unfortunate but true. Human nature, you can't beat it.

For those of you saying things like ' Why can't people just tell the truth about Jews?'-don't you realize that is a form of prejudice? There is no universal truth about Jews just like there is no universal truth about Muslims or Southerners, or Democrats or Republicans or Gays or Women or etc.. That's the point. There are indviduals of all types within all of these groups. If you know multiple people in any of these groups, you will see that. If you don't know multiple people, then keep your mind open enough to imagine it to be so. In addition, while we may be guaranteed free speech, many organizations who rely on people to buy their goods or watch their shows do not want to offend large groups within the population. It's just bad busines. Thus, firing some one who does this makes sense.

I don't think Sanchez should have been fired for what he said and neither does John Stewart. The issue is we have moved away from jounalism and have morphed into newstainment with our anchors becoming opionators instead of relayers of information and explorers of the truth. All the networks regurgitate the same tiny bit of information and because they have 24 hours to fill and few actual reporters they fill the hours with opinion and those so called experts.
Sanchez has said some stupid things but when people are on the air for hours a day and are unscripted they are bound to say something stupid. It happens to all of them. Should he be held accountable, sure but fired no. As Jon Stewart said, paraphrased, on Larry King if the network felt his overall performance was bad and his show stunk then they should get rid of him, not because of what he said.

This is not a freedom of speech issue, or if it is, it's not the one people think. Sanchez can still walk around saying all the bigoted things he wants, but the network, due to their rights of free speech, can limit what is said on their shows. Perhaps it's an unbecoming comparison, but I think of it like a film director and an actor. Sure the actor has free speech, but if he wants to say different lines than that the director desires, he can exercise his rights in the unemployment line.

I agree with you, to some extent, that too many people throw out the "freedom of speech" defense as a shield to avoid the consequences of their actions. In this case though, Rick was not spouting his beliefs on CNN. Whether or not his freedom of speech was violated depends on the personal conduct policy he agreed to abide by when he joined CNN. I have to imagine that if his rights were violated he would have filed suit in response to his firing. With that said I tend to be in Rick's corner on this one. I only found out today that he was fired, after wondering why he wasn't on the air and "googling" his name. In todays atmosphere of deliberately edited and sensationalized news, I went ahead and listened to the interview for myself, before forming an opinion. As a submariner in the navy, I can identify with what Rick is expressing in regard to his frustrations. I don't watch John Stewart so I can't comment on the validity of Rick's claims one way or the other. What I will tell you is that my views on how far we've come since the civil rights era have changed quite a bit in the last five years, and not for the better. The fact is that in this integrated society the existence of the sheet wearing racist is just unacceptable. Not many people want to identify themselves as being part of that group. There are many people who hold "prejudices" however. A prejudiced person doesn't have to want to hang someone of a particular ethnic group from a tree. For a person to be prejudiced they only need to have established a predetermined judgement in their minds of a person based on their belonging to a certain group. What a lot of people don't realize is that they hold these prejudices, and that they do carry over into the work place. Whether Sanchez was right or wrong in his accusations against Stewart I understand perfectly when he describes the subliminal slights minorities deal with in todays society. As I said, far less people are overt about their prejudices these days. They may not even realize they have them. In my time in the navy I, as a black man, have made friends that were, in fact, prejudiced. I think in Sanchez's case you saw the result of years of being on the receiving end of veiled insults, and wondering why he had the target on him (rightly or wrongly), converge into the interview he gave. Was it the most eloquent? No, he was speaking from the heart in a moment of frustration. Is it something we Americans are ready to hear? Not really. There is a disturbing trend in this country where we label anyone who dares bring up the "R" word a whiner and "reverse racist," in our rush to declare racism and bigotry a long dead relic of the past. Unfortunately, it is more often than not, someone who is not a member of the ethnic group which experienced the oppression who is the loudest in declaring that the oppression is ended. Which is why I gave careful consideration to Sanchez's comments about Jews. If he were to deny the oppression that Jews went through, he would be plain wrong. I didn't get that from him though, or that he even denies the current existence of anti-semitism. He was offering his view in response to a comparison made between the jewish and hispanics. He wasn't bringing up that there are a lot of jews who run the media (something I'm honestly in no position to agree or disagree with) as a way of saying there's this jewish cabal which meets in a hidden lair to plot conspiracies. I took his argument to mean that 1) There are a lot of jewish people who you really can't tell are jewish (I didn't know Stuart was. Maybe I'm just bad at these things though.) Therefore their status as a member of a minority group is not so evident and 2) The jewish community has seen success in the corporate world uncomparable to other minority groups. John Stuart is in show business so Sanchez mentioning a jewish stake in the media is fair. It's less likely that Stuart would experience prejudice in his job field if his bosses are all of the same faith or race as him. That was the point Sanchez was making. I didn't see him discrediting the jewish experience, as much as stating that at this point and time in this country, the experiences of the jewish race is not 100% identical to the hispanic experience, despite both being minority groups. I find the treatment a lot of people have for gays in this country, despite one's moral stance on the issue, deplorable. There are those out there who harbor an unwarranted amount of hatred for that group. As a black man, I do not see our experiences as equal. I can't tell if someone is gay just by looking at them. I can tell if someone is black (due exception given to the rare case.) That doesn't mean I deny the trials and tribulations of the gay community. I just don't see them as being identical to those of the black community. If i'm speaking truthfully, at this point and time in this country, I think hispanics are facing a tougher challenge than any other group in this country, including Arabs. That being said I don't think Rick was trying to diminish, deny, or sugar coat jewish history. He was only arguing, in response to a comment comparing the two, that the two are different. As for CNN firing him, I haven't been able to find much in terms of a statment regarding his firing, but I've read that they thanked him for his service. That to me is unacceptable. Either the man is an out of control racist deserving of his swift departure, or he shouldn't have been fired at all. There is no middle ground. This comes off as shady to me. I've already taken a break from CNN (explaining why I just now found out about Rick's firing) and now I might be taking a permanent vacation from them. At least with Fox News I know what they're about. Still I can't see myself tuning into them either. I'll go with BBC, if anything. Maybe I'll just stop watching the news. I hate to say ignorance is bliss, but it seems to me news organizations, following the success of Fox's sensationalized "news" programming, have fostered a culture of extremism and intolerance on all sides of the issues.

I think there are a lot of jealous people out there; jealous of rick's pleasing personality. We need this type since most of the people on cnn are rather dull and the news is repeated over and over. Rick always gave you a lift, something to laugh about. If he is not back on I'll have to go to something else, but I don't know what. Cnn was my favorite channel, but I'm disappointed in management. I will say that I like Wolf very much.

I had respected CNN for their relatively balanced reporting of news, espcially compared to Faux News Channel. But firing Rick Sanchez was a super bad move. He is a hard nosed journalist who relentlesly pushes for the truth during an interview, and has a wonderful sense of humor. And all of us, William, make mistakes. And the best we can do is live our lives the best we can, try to clean up the mess we made, and be of service to others. Bottom line, very bad racist decision by CNN.

This is like when a professional athlete commits a crime or is involved in some scandal and arguing that the organization, like the NFL or the MLB, and saying that they should not suspend this athlete or release them. Rick's personal opinion was said publicly. He is a professional and presumably an intelligent man should have understood that his voice reflects CNN and their reputation in any setting. So when an anchor or host of any news station says something offensive, and it is NEWS, its going to reflect their company. How do you think it looks when CNN has to cover a report on their own employee? He should have kept his mouth shut, and i do not condone bigotry, but if he really wanted to say something like this, the man should have kept it off the air. Lesson learned, case closed, doesnt matter if he worked for FOX, MSNBC, CNN or whatever. If Larry King went on Oprah and said something completely and overtly racist, he will most likely get fired (extreme scenario). Its business people, don't like it, thats too bad, because thats how the world works, life isn't fair. As a public figure, he should have known to keep those sort of negative opinions to himself.

Up until this strategic blunder Rick Sanchez deserves credit. He has parlayed 2 weeks of 24 hour commercial free, worthless emotional garbage coverage of Hurricane Andrew for a local Miami station into career oppotunities that awarded to the elite of the news industry. Sanchez achilies heal is that he doesn't think before he speaks and he really stung himself here, regardless of if it was provked or not. He had to know that most contracts of his nature will contain a morals clause that would make it prudent to avoid ethnic comments that might be considered offensive. One can say he deserved a second chance and that is open for debate, but the fact that history has shown that media figures have paid dearly in the past for similar comments, should have been a clear indication to Rick to sidestep the opportunity to make that sort of a comment, and dissassociate himself with the inference that was being suggested by the person interviewing him.

If the Jewish are in the entertainment or news business is because they deserve it, they are the best there is. But the prejudicial CNN management made a rushed decision on Rick by an statement of factual information. The dominance of a given group on a skill does not make it wrong. Why is it that being a minority has become the only way someone can express their opinions without caution. In one way I'm happy that cnn decided that sanchez wasn't given the minority get out of jail free card. But I also feel like the statement wasn't that harsh. The truth is that the media has a large amount of funding and operational control held by jewish individuals. Most of which are not zionist btw and operate comparably to the good ol' boy network. Its not a secret either! I don't feel like those idviduals that have control hire spokespeople that share the same bloodline... But they do however hire based on political preference. And I do think that has become common practice in regards to all of the news networks. In my opinion, the news has become entertainment all across the board due to this type of behavior. Thus causing me to believe that Jon Stewarts "I'm just a comedian" rant is no longer an acceptable excuse for allowing him to say whatever he wants without consequence. if he is just a comedian then why do millions of youthful americans look to comedy centrals daily show for news. And if he's not a journalist or a newscaster, why does he allow his followers to continue to look to him for political advice.

Wow! I go on vacation (traveling) come home, go to CNN to watch "Rick's List" and find out he has been fired! Unbeleivable!! The fact that he made a comment that indicated, that mostly people of the Jewish faith either own or control the US (and/or World) media outlet seems to me not to be an issue here. The issue for me is, "Was he telling the truth when he made the comment?". Holding with tradition with CNN's "Keeping Them Honest", I would like to request that CNN provide their dedicated followers with the true facts.

I personally could care less who owns the media, or what faith they are! "As long as they tell us (the Public) the truth!" So, put all the statistics up on the screen for us (the Public) to see. You (CNN) have a fantastic group of Statisticians to do the research and to provide truthful information, "Right"? Or am I wrong here?

I want to see from CNN who Owns and Controls not only your cable network but "ALL" television, radio, magazine, newspapers (Major only) and Movie/theatrical production by percentages of "Faith" and "Ethnicity".

If Rick Sanchez was correct then you just fired him for telling the truth and will show he was correct in his statement. If it shows he was wrong then I would have to say "Job well done by CNN" for canning a liar.

Now, CNN, in "Keeping Them Honest", can you keep yourselves honest for your veiwers? If not I will find another outlet to get my News from.

A difficult situation with much to be said by both sides. Sanchez made a major mistake. Anti-Semitism in any form is evil. Yet, what about free speech? Sadly, in the media there are certain taboo subjects, and one of them is Jewish presence and influence in the media. American Jews are a creative and industrious people and have worked hard, and I certainly don't fault them for their success. But I'm sure some others are frustrated as I am because we never get objective reporting when it comes to Israel. Our messed-up involvement in the Middle East, especially our foolish invasion of Iraq, is in part due to the Israel Lobby. Now some radical neo-cons are pushing for a US attack on Iran!

I personally found Sanchez a fair-minded, interesting CNN anchor and will miss him. He made a strategic mistake in expressing his honest opinion, something we all can do if we're not careful. And he also whined in an inappropriate way, considering how he had climbed the ladder. But look at what people like Beck, Limbaugh, Hannity, and all sorts of wild ones on TV and radio get away with and they stay on. I probably will turn less and less to CNN, which is disappointing because CNN seemed to be the only 24-hour news channel that approximated 'fair and balanced'.

We are so sorry to have lost Rick's reporting skills and personality. We loved him. I'm sick of all the racial slurs. I'm a WASP, so am an observer of all the racial slurs and so-called "comedy" from the likes of Stewart. Too much, too long and very unfunny. Rick had a lot of fans, and what he said, I'm sure, was not intended as a slur, but the truth as he sees it. We are supposed to have freedom to speak, and freedom of religion in the USA. CNN...put him back on...there are few good reporters that can keep on top of the news like he does. You killed the goose....shame on you.

The only thing that matters to me, is the fact that autism research will receive $3 million that was raised at this event. Oh, didn't know that? Yeah, that point got overshadowed by those remarks of Jon's. I really don't care about that. I really don't care about Rick Sanchez opening his mouth and showing his true colors either. What I do care about, being the mother of an autistic child, is that a good chunk of change was given to AUTISM RESEARCH.

So, is it just me, or are most posts on news websites comment areas just full of people who don't completely grasp whatever topic they are currently reading? I sit here reading posts, and I feel myself wondering if there can really be this many people who seriously can not put a coherent thought together or think in analytical terms. When people use "You're stupid!" as their master stroke, it just makes them look like they don't have an intelligent argument to present as to why their point of view is the right one. Even people who seem to be on the same side as myself don't help the cause. Critical thinking people. It is an amazing concept. Think before you post.

I find it ironic that the brash, sensationalist prop that CNN put in prime slots was fired for saying something sensational! His antics were good for ratings, and his radical anchor behavior was just getting started. CNN was happy making money off of his attacks on others, but its confounding unjournalistic response here shows to me that they're truly unwilling to "look at this issue from all sides". In light of all of the lynchings CNN has orchestrated on other outspoken public figures, CNN's suffocation of this compelling story would make a good subject for "Keeping Them Honest". Although I can appreciate that immigrants and minorities often feel and often are slighted by others in America, not every case of criticism or selection of someone over a minority is a case of prejudiced. In some cases, the person who gets the job or the accolade actually deserve it by their accomplishments. Likewise, not every put-down is motivated by bigotry. When Jon belittles Keith Olbermann for mindless name calling, it isn't because Keith is white. When Jon snickers at Sanchez when he points to the Galapagos Islands when referring to a potential tsunami in Hawaii, it isn't because Sanchez was born in Cuba. It's because both were being foolish when, as newsmen they should be informed. How each reacted to Jon's humor at their expense is telling to how they ended up.

I don't like very much Sanchez’s programs, but in this issue he is correct, he opened his mouth to make commentary on American Taboo, and got fired.

The much hidden fact and politically incorrect to talk about it is that Jewish are a minority who were persecuted through the ages, and after their initial mass escape migration from Eastern Europe to North America in the late 19th., to early 20th century, positioned their children and younger members of their tribe (extended families) to go outside their closed society customary occupations in order to economically succeed.

The younger American Jews took advantage of the new freedoms America had to offer, and with the sponsorship and direction from their own clan elders they pursued higher education in the fields they had analyzed and had the conviction that in the future would transform their society, these main fields of study would be the medical sciences, communication and law.

More or less one hundred years later, the Jewish People are still a minority, but they are no longer the shoe maker, the butcher, the seamstress, the ice and milk delivery person in the streets of New York; now with their new westernized last names to blend and avoid discrimination, they are an important part of the American experience, they are neuron surgeons, esquires, politicians and most importantly the captains of communication who basically choose what the American masses hears through the air waves.

This very small minority by their own design, but a very powerful one is the one Rick Sanchez made the mistake of making a small insinuation which ultimately got him fired.

The public should become more literate about the subject so they can choose their own destiny; follow the example of the Jewish People who pursued a better future no matter what.

Prejudice and bigotry should not be tolorated in anyone entrusted to deliver the news. When Walter Croncite delivered the news, no one knew or cared about that religion or national origin he was. Now this country is so divided that even the right wing fanatics get so-called legitimate forums to express their particular prejudices. Comedians do seem to get away with a lot more than anchor people. But, don't we want it that way? I agree that Sanchez just wasn't very good at his job and should have been fired anyway, whether he had said anything about Jon Stewart or not. Now if CNN is getting rid of incompetent anchors, I hope that Fredericka Whitfield is next. There needs to be a certain amount of education, vocabulary, and general knowledge required of anchors. I am not picking on Sanchez and Whitfield because of ethnic issues but because of their incompetence.

I don't think it is funny to make a joke about someone getting fired.

Since Jon Stewart had a history of making fun of Rick Sanchez, I wonder why Rick ever agreed to go on the radio show of someone who used to work on Jon Stewart's show, and is a friend of Jon's. I guess Sanchez believed he was really on the show to promote his new book, and was caught offguard when the interview took a turn.

Perhaps, CNN doesn't want people to demonstrate our support for Rick Sanchez. He was right on point and said nothing inappropriate. So many of us say exactly what he said, but are not fortunate enough to have the opportunity to say it on public television or radio. Thanks for taking away the one man who had guts to say the truth: Jews DO control the media and many sectors of the economy. They control more than what white Americans control!!! Need evidence, well RS got kicked out because he offended Jews, so Jews kicked him out! How convenient. It comforts me to know that soon, RS will be working on a network (one not controlled by Jews) that values his work and integrity. From now on, CNN will no longer be my homepage and I'll make sure NO ONE in my family or circle of friends supports CNN. CNN is a disgrace to all networks.

Should it not be taken as a compliment that they control the media. I am sure it was through hard work and perseverance. I would be proud to be Jewish and be part of such a successful, hard-working race, and there is not the slightest undertone of bigotry in my remarks, just truth. Perhaps Rick Sanchez felt the same way. I loved his show and he really got me into watching CNN. To me, he was the most impartial reporter I had ever heard. I like John Stewart, too, but maybe he went just a wee bit overboard. You think! This ethinticity crap has exceeded all boundries. He NEVER said anything anti-semetic; he said that Jews are not an oppressed minority in MODERN society and that they hold many high positions in the media. These are both FACTS.

Both Sanchez and Helen Thomas were fired within days of making comments that were interpreted as critical of Jews/Israel.

Why hasn't Joel Stein been fired from Time magazine. He pointed out that Jews ARE actually heavily represented in the media (and stated that he was proud of the fact) then wrote a racist article about Indian people taking over his hometown in NJ. Yet he still has a job. Hmmmm.

Why is it that whenever anyone says a truth or fact that is not complimentary or flattering about the jewish community or Israel, then that person is immediately called an anti-semite. Saying the truth about Jews is fine as long as it is a nice truth, when it is something hard to accept, then the victim complex comes on, and your labeled as anti-semetic. Get real! Of course major media in the US is controlled by Jews, it is well known, and is one of the driving reasons behind the ridiculously biased reports Americans hear every day regarding the Middle East, 'Israel Good, The Arabs Bad.' That is why the BBC is so good as it is completely unbiased and you can trust what is being said is not being slanted to protect a certain group of individulas.

He could have articulated his thoughts in a way that didn't border on the side of lunacy. Everyone has the right to free speech. It wasn't the content that got him fired, it was the delivery. The news today on all networks is Garbage today, because that's what attracts viewers. We can hate on Fox all we like, but at the end of the day people are tuning in. And for all you people ripping on Stewart, give me a break. He is a comedian, is it really his fault that people are turning to him for the news? ...I don't think Jon Stewart actually did anything to get Rick fired. In fact, CNN fired him before Jon ever got a chance to make any comments on the issue. On his show, Jon Stewart even said that if they fired him over these comments, it was the wrong reason. But if they fired him because they just didn't like his show, that is legitimate.

Maybe CNN wanted to fire him already and this gave them a great scapegoat to finally do it.

Maybe they overreacted (or acted appropriately) but either way, you can't blame Jon Stewart for Rick being fired unless you blame the mere existence of Jon Stewart. He had no active part in this.

You all act like Sanchez got fired solely for his inane Jewish conspiracy comments. Did it ever occur to you that maybe this was just the last straw and CNN had been thinking of dropping him anyways? I mean seriously, the guy is a buffoon. I thought I was going to throw up when he had his Tony Orlando lovefest. He was arrogant, ignorant and uneducated as well as being self-important and basically a clown. There are thousands of better anchors in the world than Rick Sanchez and I for one had been hoping he'd get the axe sooner rather than later. Now they just have to axe that stupid Tony Harris spot in the morning that has begun to ruin my breakfast. What a waste of airtime. Maybe he and Sanchez can open a clown school together or something.

How ironic.. David Letterman of all people to kick someone when they are down. To me it seems like not just Jon that got under Sanchez skin but years of people telling him he can't make it because of his Cuban background. Finally came to a head and Sanchez spilled his guts. The way it came out was not good for Sanchez but as a minority, I kinda understand the part where he says people would say things to him and as a minority, you can read between the lines of what they are really trying to tell you.

I'm not a fan of Rick Sanchez, but, then, again, I rarely watched him. From what I saw, he sometimes said good things; other times, he was nuts. HIs taser act I think was over the top and over sensationalized. Jon Stewart had every right and was not wrong in making fun of it.

But the comments about Jews controlling the media is an old, old complaint which typically has come from bigots. In one way, I feel sorry for Sanchez, but he should not have made those remarks.

Yes, Kayla. People can read a lot between the lines. It's also pretty clear that (Freedom on Speech) does not extend
to CNN. They and all of the media "Pick and Choose" what they want to be FREE SPEECH>>>
I thought Rich Sanchez was one of the best and I hope he gets a good job where he is allowed to fight back when
      someone picks on him.
Everyone is so thin skinned anymore. The least little nothing sets them off. I remember a sermon in church one Sunday when parishioners where complaining about each other to the clergy and the Minister said, I have a message for all you
complainers who come to me with your little petty sensitivities....GROW UP !!!!!!

I also will miss Rick Sanchez I thought that his reporting was fair and balanced. Although, in today society you can't tell your true feelings when your in the media. And that's what got him the axe. Another thing Chris Matthews is on MSNBC. So turn to that network.

Well, I will not be watching CNN anymore. CNN missed an opportunity to hold a forum etc. to discuss and advance society. When Glenn Beck called Yhe Pesident of the US a racist, they didn't fire him. He was allowed to expalin himself and apologize. We were all able to come to some understanding of his view–right or wrong. IF we are unable to discuss these negative views of Jews, we will never get to the bottom of dispelling these negative views.

CNN lost a viewer. Once Larry King retires the only good reporter will be Anderson. Spitzer & Parker show stinks, firing Rick Sanchez is another costly mistake CNN made i rather watch fox news!

Sanchez was an arrogant buffoon to put it mildly. He finally overloaded his big cuban mouth and got what he deserved. CNN will be much better now. Sanchez is on the list you DON'T want to be on! bye bye sanchez suckers.

They wouldn't fire Anderson Cooper, first off hes at the top of his game and second if they did fire him, his family could buy the company and fire all of them.

Rick Sanchez was the biggest waste of airtime I have ever seen. I tried so many times to suffer through his moronic commentaries but invariably had to turn him off or risk having my IQ lowered.

My husb.and I always watched Rick Sanchez then Wolf Blitzer. It was our routine. We really don't understand why A&E can 'pardon' DAWG Chapman and put him back on the air after making disparaging remarks about a certain group of people, and CNN cannot 'pardon' Rick Sanchez. The level of commitment and passion for journalism given to us by jRick was worth every penny of his contract, and DAWG also was a redeeming show. The pardon for one man should be extended to the other. Is A&E different from CNN? C'mon...we don't even listen to afternoon shows now...
Rick Sanchez is UNIQUE in his field. Many Canadians (French- and English-speaking, love his open type of person he is. We want Rick Sanchez BACK with the same type of show. Amen. Point Final. !Punto Final!
