Kirstie Alley: I've lost 50 pounds

Kirstie Alley took to Twitter yesterday to address a very weighty issue: "I've lost over 50 lbs... and I'm having the time of my of my life," she wrote, adding, "30 more to go."

The 59-year-old former "Cheers" star – who also posted a photo of herself from a recent shoot in Italy - confessed last year that she was tipping the scales at 230 pounds, having gained back the 75 pounds she dropped on Jenny Craig in 2006.

"By 2008, my weight started creeping up and I said, 'Oh, I still look good at 150. I still look good at 155. I still look okay at 165. Some of my clothes still fit at 175,'" she told Ladies' Home Journal in April. "And nobody was saying 'You're fat.' I was like a bank robber who was getting away with it."

Not anymore. Alley says that with the help of her new Organic Liaison weight loss program, she has successfully gotten rid of the pounds and gained confidence and control.

"Back from Italy...found the love of my life," she tweeted September 19, "turned out it was me."

Best Wishes, Kirstie. Getting older is a battle every day, but it is worth it. As for the nasty comments, few of these commenters are going to get several hundred comments to a CNN article about them when they get close to age 60.

unfortunately, she's coming out bragging about this because she now has her own weight-loss program to shill for.
Most people can control their weight with diet and exercise. The rest of us need supplements, but we don't need $100 'programs' just a high quality supplement.
Unfortunately, most supplements do one of 2 things:
    1. trick your body into thinking you're full when you're not. This is starvation.
    2. rev up your metabolism, and we've all read about how dangerous this can be.
A new set of supplements uses Leptin – the hormone your cells release to tell your brain "we're full".
Our modern lives – stress, poor eating, etc. – mess with our body chemistry, and sometimes those messages don't get through.
Leptin supplements, like Mandura TRIM, help cut through the 'clutter' and make sure your brain knows when to stop eating. Naturally.
    Safe, effective, and Clinically Proven.

Listen all you idiots that are throwing comments like this, over eating is a bad habit, but let me tell you why we see so
many overweight people today!! It's because of the things that are going on in the good old USA, the prices of food, bills,
cars, and etc. have gone through the roof, it's cheaper to eat junk food, and we are all guilty of indulging when were
depressed ,Just look around you and ask people if they are really happy with the life we now have in USA. we no longer are able to live the DREAM . Life is not easy and a there is a lot of people whom are depressed today, we just can't keep up, so of course we turn to junk food, I'm sorry for all you skinny people whom bad mouth the over weight
people, yep! But about Christi, she still is a beautiful person and that is all you all should care about, so stop hating
and let us all live in peace, either skinny or fat, were all still here to make a differance. SO Christi, keep up the good
work and go girl. I'm sixty and wish I looked as good as you do!

Do we really care? Why can't these women embrace their bodies at the current wieght, and stop obsessing about it. I would prefer it if she reported she was starting a self acceptance and wellness website for women focused on healthy behavior and self esteem. Why can't she accept her size and be a spokeswoman for large women? Rather than continuing the stereo type that you are only worthy if you are a certian weight. Show off your body, be in a bikini on a beach in Italy, on the cover of People magazine. Start a movement for self acceptance and self esteem for women.

She is a big woman and she had to weigh more than that. If she weighed 175 and lost 50 and 30 more to go....that would make her 95lbs. She should just be honest about what she is and lost. She is a beautiful woman and I hope she stays a healthy weight for her.

Then she packed on the pounds again and then later, another story about her losing weight and on and on. It's been awhile since we've seen this same story. However, good for her providing she keeps it off. She just can't help herself when she goes on a binge eating kick. Anyone notice that she hasn't been on a TV show for years and years let alone a movie! I thought I read somewhere that she just finished up a movie but who knows.

Anybody else find it funny that the (supposedly) healthier America eats, the fatter everyone gets? America, as a whole, is eating less fat now, and has more obese people, than anytime in the past.

There is something going on metabolically that is beyond most people to control.

Thank you Jodee for posting that info, I am going to look it up and also invite a friend to do so as well, that has severe problems with depression and obsesity due to over eating.
I am almost 100 lbs overweight and I'm 35- yet I don't eat a 3rd of what i used to eat 10 years ago. Yet I have not seen any weight loss. To look at me you would think I eat all day and gorge on bon bons by the truckload. Its frustrating. Someone mentioned how some of us have inherited those kind of bodies our ancestors did that could survive on very little food. It feels true. I have a strong body and quick reflexes for my size, and don't "feel" like a lazy slob but it must be what people think of me too. Like "if only she'd put down the fork and walk". So funny. I walk everywhere, walk to bus stops, walk to grocery stores. I get firm flab. That's what I get. But its no excuse to stay overweight. I don't want to die in 2 years. I'll never lose hope. Nobody should!

It has totally changed my life NoDoubt. I will never diet again and this intuitive eating or listening to your body's hunger and fullness cues is the only way to go, I honestly believe this. Of course there is more to it than that, but that is just to simplify and give you a very short overview. Our society is so focused on body image and weight loss and diets, and where has it got us – only to one of the unhealthiest nations in the world!! Something is seriously wrong there. It's time to take back our power from the diet industry. It's time to toss our scales. It's time to live life free of food and body image obsession! Before I go, I want to share one more site that I really like. It's about media and body image Take care, you can do it!!!

There are so many directions to take this story. From the first time I saw Ms. Alley perform, I was awe-struck. She clearly is talented as an actor. With that, she also has incredible, sultry, piercing eyes. In her early days, her physical balance was excellent, and very admirable. She was one of the most physically beautiful female actors of her time.

Her roller-coaster weight issues are likely based in her psyche, as is true for most people with similar life challenges. I sincerely hope she is receiving the needed psychological help she needs to truly maintain a weight/height balance it seems she seeks. Perhaps she could regain a sense of legitimacy in show business, as she would likely feel better about herself.

Suicidal – read my comments and then go look up Intuitive Eating, Natural Eating, Conscious Eating. There is a way out of your diet hell and I am totally living proof. There is help. It is not about finding willpower!!! It is not just about walking away from the table. And who cares what everyone else thinks. This is your life, not theirs. I never thought I could do it but I did and weight is no longer taking over my life. There is an online program that might help you from the Cedric Centre in BC, Canada. Google it and see what it's about. There are others, but this one is super affordable and has a built in support network. Killing yourself is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. Dig deep and invest in yourself to get better and live an amazing life. That will be the best way to get back at all the haters!!!

I'm overweight. I'm unhappy. I've searched for answers, tried using my will power, cried out to God. I don't know what else to do. And after reading the cruel comments here, I now realize how people think of me. They think you just walk away from the table? It's not like that at all. It's more like this constant hunger that never goes away and the more you try to ignore it, the louder it screams at you. I met an alcoholic once and that is how she described her disease. If she bought a six pack, it's like it was screaming at her (figurately speaking) until all 6 were gone. I'm glad people can leave anonymous comments here so I now see how society really feels about me. Since I can't fix myself, then I guess I'll have to eliminate myself.

Suicidal- please trust in one thing: that when a person is depressed, they can't think straight. Can't put things in proper perspective. I have a friend in the same boat. There is help and we CAN get better but only if we stick around! When a person is depressed they are not capable of cultivating the proper responses to life's challenges. We take it way more internally and feel like everything is our fault. A difficult childhood, abusive relationships, and genetics are not things we can fix from the past or from our DNA- but we CAN learn to take things one day at a time. ONE DAY AT A TIME. If you want you can talk to me-

To Suicidal–Please do not do anything permanent to yourself to stop this attack. You mentioned God in your post so you also know a little something about the dark side. It sounds like you have been targeted by those who are working for the dark side! The strategy they use is to keep up their chanting until you give in to the temptation they are suggesting. In other words they want to wear you down until you obey them. In your case they are ordering you to eat, eat, and eat some more! Why do you think they do this? They want to see you destroy yourself, just as you are suggesting. If you do their bidding, they win this battle, but you would be gone! Do not obey their orders! Pray as you have never prayed before! You have people who care about you. The fact that you are reaching out on this blog means that you are still strong enough to stay in the fight. Please try the things that have been suggested here, but do not give up.

Suicidal I can't speak for everyone but everything I've said (typed) is in jest. I do find it hard to understand people who cannot find it in themselves to change aspects of their life. Please do not harm yourself. Find help. There are medical procedures if worse comes to worse but more so than anything else look within yourself and find what makes you unique. Accentuate those things you do well. Not everyone is meant to be thin. the issue here is when someone uses an aspect of their life to get money out of pity then she gets what she deserves.

I understand how you're feeling. I was reading these comments all day Friday. Don't ask me why–I guess it was an eye opener as to what people really think. I am so appalled that people are so full of hate and really don't care. I spent my whole weekend feeling like I would never be worth anything any more. I will probably lose my husband to cancer in the near future and after reading this, it makes me wonder what reason I have to stick around. People don't underestimate what effect your cruelty has. Maybe you don't care–I think a lot of these people really don't and it's sickening. CNN, maybe you should reconsider how these comment threads are handled. Freedom of speech is good, but not when it's used by immature people trying to get laughs at the expense of others.

Obesity is an epidemic in our society. It is troubling to read articles about the increase of americans that are over weight or obese. It is especially disturbing to read how many children are obese. This may indicate that the cycle will continue. It is also troublesome because obesity leads to so many other problems, such as diabetes and heart problems and lead to other lifelong healthcare concerns.

This has got to be the biggest proof that diets do not work. If a celebrity with all the resources in the world cannot lose and keep weight off, well then there is no hope for the rest of society! Plus, she was paid to be on Jenny Craig and she still couldn't do it!

If she would just realize that the only real way to get down to her natural body weight is to eat when she's hungry and stop when she's full she could get off this weight loss/gain rollercoaster for good. No one should care what they weigh. You can feel it when you're heavier than you should be. Who cares what the number is!? Do not let yourself be controlled by the stupid scale!!

This greedy (for attention, for money, for food) woman was paid a handsome fee for losing weight with, and shilling for, Jenny Craig. The only requirement was that she weigh in regularly, and stay with the program. She started feeding again, and got fat, and got fired, and all of the attention she once had was lavished on that new (and much better looking) JC girl, Valerie Bertanelli. So KA came out with her "own" diet and - voila! - she's losing weight (again) to promote it. Quelle suprise! What Kirstie needs is a giant cork. No one told her she was fat ? Is she serious ? Has she been totally blind to the press coverage done on her ballooning weight ? Can't believe she expects us to believe this yet again. She knew she was fat to begin with and that's why she went through Jenny Craig. When she finished, she passed the torch on to Valerie Bertinelli, who in turn passed it on to Sarah Rue. Kirstie meanwhile went back to her old ways, and ballooned up again. I don't believe she'll ever stop yo-yo-ing back and forth, because she refuses to fully commit to it. ....I cannot believe how insensitive some of the people posting here can be. Eating disorders is HUGE problem today, especially in the US. Whether it is a model who starves herself or an actress battling obesity, Eating Disorders in this country really effects everyone. For those people who do not have problems with thier weight, you should be grateful, not judgemental. Shame on you. Kirstie Alley is keeping the awareness of Obesity alive, and I am sure it is not easy and has been embarrassing. Look at Allegra Versace who was photographed with her feeding tube (due to her anorexia)while shopping. I am sure all you insensitive bloggers would "hit that" too, feeding tube and all.....Wake up people, its not a career stunt and is in no way helping her acting career (is she even working today???) I think she keeps everyone posted to give hope to people and inspire people to try to maintain their weight. Go Kirstie!

All you people who run off at the mouth with criticism are idiots. Nutrition and metabolism are waaaaay more complicated than "stop eating and lose weight". Oh yeah, you'll lose weight all right, for about a week. Then your metabolism goes into "famine" mode, and wham! You can start to gain weight on fewer and fewer calories. It won't *matter* how much you exercise either, except that you'll probably drive yourself to a physical breakdown. So unless you have a real clue about these things, just help yourself to a serving of STFU.

The negative tone of nearly all the posts reflects how tired people are of Kristie's public struggles with weight. When she's heavy, she announces it to the world and cashes in with a sitcom. When she's losing weight, we have to hear about how motivated she claims to be as she hawks the latest fad diet for profit. The bottom line is that she is not a happy person and uses food as a crutch. She, like most overweight people, don't have the willpower to take it off and keep it off. I feel badly for her and wish her luck.

What no one has mentioned is that her "Organic Liason" is a Church of $cientology side project. The "Church" is hoping this "diet" will gain in popularity ("Gosh Kristie's lost so much weight, maybe I'll try it too!!!!") and get people to spend their money, which will fund the Cult. If you research the "diet" it's basically vitamin supplements and drinking tons of water, which is essentially a Dianetics practice. It's just a ploy to get people to join $cientology, start drinking their kool-aid, and spending your hard earned $$$ on a "diet" that's not going to work!

well one thing about Kirstie – at least she doesn't give up!! losing weight and keeping it off is hard! bad habits don't form overnight, and breaking them doesn't happen overnight either. many people have to quit smoking 3, 4, 10, 12 times before they actually "quit" for good. dieting is the same for many people. I admire KA because she keeps trying. she doesn't just give up and say "oh well, I'm fat, too bad" – and hopefully this time she will succeed and won't gain the weight back.

I give her credit – for being that age and wanting to do something about her weight – you see so many people that are FAT and barely can walk or do strenuous exercises and still have bad eating habits. I am glad she is taking the initiative to do something to improve her health. All these people out that that are overweight – do you know what that is doing to your health? wake up people and get on a diet – cut out the fatty foods and the Mountain Dews and get yourselves in SHAPE – I've always liked Kirstie Alley and I am glad SHE IS DOING SOMETHING to improve her health – SO, all of you that have made comments about Kirstie – bite your tongue b/c when she is done loosing her weight – you guys will be WISHING you looked like her. So many of our population is overweight and they don't have the motivation or ambition to do something about it – Valerie Bertinelli of Jenny Craig inspired me and I am still working hard to get where I want to be – i am in my mid 40's and I don't want to be overweight when I hit my 50's

Kirstie Alley lost some weight? Are you sure that isn't just a reprint of the same headline from a year or two ago? I like Kirstie but I'm so tired of hearing about her weight gain/loss/gain/loss, etc, etc. Also, I find it hard to accept that obesity is a "disease". Give me a break! Either stop eating calorie-laden food everyday or get up off your @ss and start engaging in some actual physical activity, maybe even break a sweat. Or, just maybe, you could do both. I'm far from skinny (size 12-14) but I don't blame my weight on on some disease or addiction. I blame it on the fact that I hate exercise. I just started at the gym and everyday I go, I have to force myself. I need to get to that place where I actually enjoy going and start seeing the results. Until I get there, everytime will be a struggle. So many people don't want to suffer through the hard part before they get to the reward. Well, sometimes there's just no way around it. Hopefully Kirstie, and others, will realize and accept this. Then we won't have to read another story about how she got fat again.

Good for you tam! Keep it up. trust me, there is a tipping point with exercise. The longer you stay at it the easier it gets. The easier it gets, the more you can push yourself. Several years ago I was a gymnastics instructor and fitness trainer. One of the most rewarding parts of that experience was seeing someone crest the work/enjoymeny threshold. Once it becomes more of a pleasure than a chore, you will be hooked for life. Good luck, keep at it!

I don't care about Kirstie Alley but I am sad to see people in this thread saying things like: "Geeeez! If people would just step away from the trough and stop shoveling food into their holes the problem would be solved. I'm so tired of looking at obese people EVERYWHERE!" (Squeeker). Yes, personal responsibility is a factor. But our entire food culture is based on over sized proportions and processed foods that are unhealthy. People are completely ignorant about what is in their food. Our culture is about consumption. This is a big factor in the obesity epidemic in this country. People who make fun of obese people and say hateful things about them need to take a deep breath and think for a minute before they rant on the web.

I'm not fat. 6'1" 190lbs. I run or bike every morning, followed by weight training or isometric exercises on an opposite schedule. 45 minutes to an hour max before I go to work and one day on the weekend. I eat a banana and almonds for breakfast every day. Drink one cup of coffee and ice water all day. Sensible lunch and small dinner high in protiens and god carbs and low in fat and bad carbs. I don't eat any junk food or soda, never have. My only vice is beer, and I exercise enough to work off the calories.

My wife follows a similar routine except that she exercises in the afternoon because she works very early in the morning. She is 45 years old 5'8" and 135. She does not look a day over 30. eating right and exercising not only keeps weight in check it improves every other aspect of your health and just plain makes you look better and healthier.

Kirstie is fat. She has admitted that he lack of self control with regard to diet and exercise contribute to it. She yo yo's. That is the worst thing you can do to your body. Change your life style. Get healthier, live longer, live better. It is actually very easy.

Did it myself for 50 years...and then had enough. The lapband is a tool to help you in the behavioral modification, and if you do it right, it works like a champ. But it takes hard work. I am a success story for the band. My weight is where it was when I was 20. I've lost about 100 pounds. And I have changed my eating habits. We need to care not only about Kirstie, but about all those who are struggling with their weight. Obesity is like any other addiction that must be fought to successfully overcome it. We do not want our family members or friends to develop health problems and that is what happens to those who neglect their food addictions. I do not have this problem, but pray for those who do, and sometimes they also find strength that way.

      Valerie and Squeaker,

It's not that easy, especially if you're a food addict. For the vast majority of my life, food has been the drug that has comforted me, helped me celebrate, calmed me down when I'm stressed, etc. In most places in the country, there are not the resources available for those that are dealing with this, as most of the focus on addiction is on alcohol and drugs and the focus on eating disorders is mostly on those dealing with anorexia and bullemia, and compulsive overeating/food addiction are mostly neglected, with those dealing with it being chastised and ridiculed for being fat/obese instead of being helped.

I still question where I got the strength, but slowly but surely, I've been able to change my eating habits. Instead of eating junk food, I snack on fruits and vegetables, I work out 5-6 times a week at the gym, and have been able to lose 65 pounds. However, I still have my slip-ups, and unfortunately haven't been able to find the support I need to help with my compulsive overeating (12 step programs seem to be too much of carte blanche to have a victim mentality...and I'm NOT a victim!). I'm not giving up, though...

Anyhow, just a thought from someone who's been there.

Ellen, thanks for reminding us of how we should feel. The tendency to gain weight is not only attributed to addicition but to hereditary as well. We have descended from the survivors who could manage to turn a mouse into five pounds of fat storage and live off it for weeks. Now that we no longer need to do so, our bodies are slow to realize it. Most of the mean comments come from those who would have been the first to starve during a famine.

Valerie and Squeeker: A cocaine addict can stay away from cocaine. An alcoholic can stay away from booze. A smoker can stay away from cigarettes. A food addict cannot stop eating. Do you get the difference? It's basically the same disorder, a need to switch off emotionally and not deal with inner pain, but for those who turn to food for comfort, it is most difficult. They still have to eat something, and with "bad" foods easily available everywhere you turn, how do you ignore it all? If you don't understand compulsive behavior, stop posting your cruel and ignorant comments.

Amen, Denizen Kate. Valerie, your stupidity and lack of compassion are far more detrimental to society than are fat people. What if you had a child and he or she were fat, and you couldn't figure out why? I have known overweight people who consume half as much food as I do and work out on a regular basis, and are still overweight. In many cases it can be attributed to genuine medical problems, such as endocrine deficiencies and side effects from medications such as steroids. I certainly hope nothing ever befalls you that causes any weight gain. How will you face yourself when you have such hatred for fat people? You pathetic fool.

I am wondering what is up with the expression on her face.... If I had dropped 50 I'd be grinning like the Cheshire cat, and she's standing there smirking like she's getting a colonoscopy without anesthesia. ;>

Who gives a crap? Is this really how she's staying relevant? By gorging herself to epic proportions and then "learning" how to be healthy? If she "learned' how to be healthy, she'd stop this. This isn't news people.

It's always funny when she gets fat again. Maybe that's her schtick now. Thanks for making me laugh, Yo Yo Ma Ma!

Organic Liaison= fad diet; she'll pack it back on in no time. Maybe if she quit "dieting" and changed her eating habits for life then she could keep the lbs off.

Organic Liaison is not a diet, its a healthy organic way of eating. It is reduce calorie because that only makes sense but her products are completely organic and natural. I've been using them and I'm actually eating healthy and making the life changes that Kirstie is trying to share with people. Why do people knock things they don't know about? I don't get why people need to tear down others for their own enjoyment. She is doing something good... leave it at that and be happy for her and the people she is helping!

Oh, you young whippersnappers (that's called a joke, kids)...
Have you looked at pics of Sophia Loren lately? She's 76 and looks just incredible. There are many gorgeous women age 60 and over, and most of them are not skeletons with skin like so many of the younger people. Today's version of beauty has become so androgynous it's ridiculous.

I'm so tired of hearing about her weight. Is there nothing else good going on in her life? She is a pretty and funny woman, but all she talks about is weight. She really needs some new material.

If you don't care, why did you even click to read the article. All you people with your cold comments which demean others that are making an effort to improve their lives should just keep your poison to yourselves. And while you're at it, go jump off a bridge. You'd be doing the rest of us who want to improve life a favor.

Right on Brett, it's hard enough for anyone to change – they need encouragement, not discouragement! I bet if all of you who are putting her down, looked at yourself – you would find the need for change too. Grow up and keep on keeping on Kristie!
