Who were the soldiers with Lady Gaga at the VMAs?

Lady Gaga had not one, but four dates on her arm as she strode into last night's MTV Video Music Awards at L.A.'s Nokia Theatre: gay and lesbian soldiers who were discharged or opted to leave over the military's Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy.

"I'm here for a very, very important cause tonight," the eight-time Moonman winner, 24, told MTV. "These are all my friends and they are with SLDN.org, which is an organization that was founded in 1993 under the reaction to the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policies. Their stories are very inspiring and there's so much we can do right now."

According to the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, the soldiers are former West Point cadet Katie Miller, who resigned in August to protest the policy; and former U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. David Hall, former U.S. Air Force Major Mike Almy and former U.S. Army Sgt. First Class Stacy Vasquez, who were all discharged.

SLDN adds that Gaga met with Hall, Vasquez and Miller prior to her Sept. 7 show at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C.

"Lady Gaga’s recognition of these fine patriots casts a spotlight on the unjust burden that Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell imposes upon the brave men and women who defend our country every day," SLDN executive director Aubrey Sarvis said in a statement, "and further underscores why the Senate must swiftly act to get rid of this despicable law for good."

A federal judge in California ruled Sept. 9 that the military's ban on openly gay soldiers is unconstitutional, and the Senate is expected to debate its repeal this month.

Gaga added last night, "No one person is more valuable than another person."

Seriously, this woman is a blessing. I really hope she works with us to tear down this law. As a military member, I can say that it really hurts to defend a country's rights to be American when the country won't defend your rights to be human.

Even if discharged or retired, you can wear your dress uniform BUT only to military functions. I highly doubt the VMAs is a military function. I do agree that WP cadet, former, shouldn't have been invited. She didn't do anything, she quit before she got out of school. I don't give a crap if someone is gay, straight, black, white, religious, atheist – who cares? They should be allowed to be open with their significant other. Also, there is a difference when people who are discharged solely for being gay and nothing else and the ones who are harassers. If you have an awesome soldier, the best ever, and you find out they are gay – who cares? Why should who they love matter? Remember not too long ago it was "immoral" for blacks and whites to marry.

Okay, just got done reading all of this intelluectual crap and it comes down to just one thing: Lady GaGa did all of this just for the money and the publicity which will get her more money. The four gays could not care less about the military or Lady GaGa, all they care about is their own publicity which, of course, will get them interviews which, of course, will get them money. So, it is all about the money. Yes, I have served 6 COMBAT TOURS, it is all about the money.

lady gaga has no talent, that's why she relies on costumes. are people in this country seriously that stupid? i challenge everyone who likes this nitwit, to listen to other music. FORCE yourself to do it. and you will realize what a complete hack this person is. she is bad and she knows it, and rely's on shock value. any different that madonna? know it's the same concept, no talent=more shock to get attention. people in general are stupid and don't get it.

I had to just scroll down to comment because I'm tired of reading some of you idiots comment on something you know nothing about.

To those in the military commenting, you are the only ones that should and I respect all of your opinions. For those commenting who don't serve, haven't served, and will not be serving... STFU.

Don't preach about America being free, for civilians [including myself since I'm not enlisted] it should be a free and that's thanks to our military. Apparently some of you don't realize, when you join the military YOU SIGN YOUR RIGHTS AWAY AND THEY DO SO KNOWINGLY.

The military is a completely different world, so STFU.

BTW "Military Brat" you don't serve so you can zip it too because you're a civilian just like me. If one of your relatives that serve would like to come share an opinion on DADT or those with Gaga last night, then tell them to hop on line.

And yes, they're not all soldiers! Every branch is different, there's soldiers for the Army, seamen/corpmen/seabeas for the Navy, airmen for the Air Force, and Marine for the Marine Corps. Ignorant people.

So most important thing, military signs their rights away when they join and they do it knowingly – so they didn't have to sign up if something was such a huge problem for them.

What I dont like is that the former military members were discharged (usually an administrative discharge) which usually means all ties to the military were cut, but they wear their uniforms still. I had Marines discharged with this type of discharge and we collected all their uniforms before they were released. This was bad for the military.

Now with Lady Gaga, I like how she supports all these types of things. I respect her for that.

actually if anybody would bother to read military regulations if you were honorably discharged and discharges under dadt are honorable discharges you are authorized to wear the military dress and mess dress uniforms and even be buried in uniform when you die they use to issue a lapel pin to show you were out of the military in ww1 and 2 it was called the lame duck then later it was a red background circle with a minuteman on it now retirees get a retired pin as for the cadet it depends what year she was in if she was 3rd or 4th year she had to be discharged because she was in the military so she would be authorized to wear what she earned. also just because they were discharged under dadt they should be authorized to show their honorable service and i say this as a seven time deployed combat soldier who believes that although i am a straight male i still support my brothers and sisters who have been discharged under this discrimination policy of dadt

When wearing any military uniform, you are required to have a valid military ID card. That applies to active duty, reserve, national guard or retired. When you are in uniform, you are subject to military rules and regulations and the military police may arrest you. Without an ID, it might take time to sort out who you are. In the meantime, you could possibly sit in a jail cell until the military determines that you are not in the service, if you had been arrested.

Is this rule enforced? No, probably not as much as it should be. Are there exceptions to the rule? Yes, one eception that comes to mind is that of an actor playing the part of a military figure. They may dress the part for movies and stage plays.

Do these people with Lady Gaga have the right to wear a military uniform. Depends...are they carrying a valid military ID card? If they have been discharged from the military, unless they retired, they do not...military retirees carry a military ID card, because they are still subject to recall in most instances.

In this age of terrorism, the wearing of a military uniform should be controlled a little better than it is. I'm not saying that these former service people are terrorists, but in some situations, terrorist could use the uniform in a terrorist plot to gain entrance to places that are supposed to be secure.

Another exception to the rule of wearing a uniform is that of a person who has been discharged and is headed home to their home of record. They may wear the uniform while enroute home, but once they arrive home, the uniform must be removed. In any case it may not be worn more than 90 days after discharge. Dischage papers would prove that you were wearing the uniform legitimately.

Enforcement of the uniform regs kind of went to hell during the Vietnam War era, it probably should have been enforced better than it was....

While I support people working to overturn DADT, and would like to see immediate integration of gays in the military; if I remember correctly, the wearing of military uniforms by people who were discharged, and no longer in active duty or active or inactive reserves or guard is considered a crime. Basically fraud and misrepresentation. Which means that I now classify these four people as dirt bags, not victims.

The military loses a ton of great qualified people simply because of the gay thing which in this day and age is ridiculous. And I hate to break it to you for every person in the military who comes out as gay and is discharged, there are probably 10 who are closeted. I think it is funny how people will express their happiness and support for somebody who stands up for what they believe. It's not the fact that they are standing up for what they believe, but the fact that they are standing up for something that you also believe. If somebody stands up for something you don't believe in, all of the sudden that person becomes a hypocrite and a bigot and not a courageous person for taking a stand. So really I don't think that you like her because she is taking a stand by itself, but you like that she is taking a stand for something you believe in.

For those who object to my opinion, that's your right. The fact that she received awards from an industry that registers its votes on itself based solely on "popularity", she could have won EVERY award and it wouldn't have meant squat. The reality is that the only reason she's even still around is that people get off on her antics and costumes. What connection that has with TALENT I'll never know. Here's a thought....it 10 years (heck, even 5) see how many people even remember her name. She'll be another pretender who winds up in the dustheap of musical history.

Frank, I'm going to guess that you're either 14 years old and/or g&y, because no straight/adult male would actually defend someone as clearly talentless as this. To comment on your claim...yes, many pop musicians are less than well received during their initial period of fame. But truth be told, those that actually HAVE talent are (more often than not) recognized as such. Here you and I part company, as I don't know anyone over 25 who actually considers her efforts to be music (something I'd have grudingly accepted in Madonna's case). Any infatuation with her clearly stems from either wardrobe choices or antics. That said, even morons have a right to their own opinions....I'll chalk this one up as yours.

You think Madonna has more talent than Gaga? Okay, you've lost all credibility. I like Madonna (somewhat) but she can't even really sing. Let's just say that she doesn't hold a candle to Cyndi Lauper. Gaga is a wonderful visual artist, musician, singer and songwriter.
Now we're just exchanging opinion (along with your laughable efforts to insult -who's the adult here?), but you're the one wasting time commenting on someone you don't even like. At least if you're going to do that, make it witty and/or constructive.

The pope, bishops and mormons are cult members promoting discrimination against minorities. That bogus black book called the bible should be banned. Religion and the churches should now be exposed as a bigoted structure that gets away with hate mongering. Love between two guys or girls existed long before these cults existed. By enjoying their tax exempt status and benefits from the state it also puts them at the mercy of state; to be forced to adhere to the human rights laws.

It's cool that GaGa stands up for what she believes. It's definitely cool that she's willing to take on unpopular issues. I'm just worried about our society that decides to call good evil and evil good. Our Heavenly Father loves all of us – we are all His children. I know for a fact that He's sad when His children decide to choose evil then try to convince the rest of us that what they're doing is 'ok'. It's not – we will all have to answer for those mistakes we made despite our Father's counsel. It's a good thing that our brother Jesus loves us all so much that he was willing to sacrifice Himself for our sins – as long as we acknowledge them and stop making it. Peace to all my brothers and sisters.

The Right Honourable Prime Minister of Canada Jean Chretien told the Vatican that there was to be no cross erected over the Canadian Parliament buildings figuratively speaking; when the Pope demanded the Prime Minister go against gay rights. An Alberta bishop had the audacity to say that The Canadian Prime Minister would go to hell for going against the church. Such outrageous evil threats. The Right Honourable Prime Minister in return; basically told the Pope to go to Hell! The Honourable Irwin Cotler, Canadian Minister of Justice, stood for equal rights for the gay community. With reference to protecting the children: The Honourable Hedy Fry, member of the Canadian Liberal Parliament, who happens to be a doctor who delivered many babies; spoke eloquently to defend the rights of babies being born and stated that she was in fact defending their rights by speaking on behalf of equal rights for the children and youth of the future - defending their integrity and dignity. Minority rights must be decided by a dignified judicial system and/or a compassionate government.

United States is supposedly fighting for democracy but within the U.S. they treat gays like secondary citizens. Being black or being gay is just as natural. If blacks or women’s rights were cast to the masses to decide … then the majority or lunatic fringe in this case - has the advantage to decide minority rights.

Rangers all the way? Hardly. Military policy is created by civilians. Their called senators and representatives. The military branches are controlled by the chairmen and the joint cheifs of staff (Highest Ranking Officers in their branch) who then report to a secratery (civilian) who reports to the secretary of defense (civilian) who then reports to the President of the United States (yup, civilian as well.). So you see, the military is the tool of the government. Set up that way long ago to keep the military leadership from overthrowing the government. Checks and balances.

Interesting how even the political undertaking of a pop star is lambasted and looked down upon....At least she has a cause, at least she had a voice that she uses besides just singing and entertaining and taking all the money like most pop stars. And if you think no-one does or willtake her or her influence seriously; you are as ingnorant as you already sound. Just becuase she is well outside of the box and allot of people are really enjoing that does not mean she will not be taken seriously. To think that you must live in the middle of nowhere and never read the news or have any concpt of what is currently going on in Modern society. I would much rather an artist have a brain and ideas and the courage to try to make the world better place than just indulging in the star-dom, fame and money. All the hatred, pain, abuse, and violence that has bloodied this lands shores has been done by men blindly following words written in a book. The book says kill the unbelievers and they kill. The book says take the land and imprison the people that were there first. The book says enslave and destroy the dark skinned people. The book says drive the gays out and they are driven out.

Just our hear say, but why would we have such strong feelings towards them being in the military but have friends and family that are and... and... it makes no difference if they are.

Its called life... if you dont like it leave our great country... Its needed in a situation like allowing men or women the chance to join a service that is JUST THAT, A SERVICE again some thing you will never know yourself.

If you dont look at things from both sides and not just the present time but how each action will affect or maybe compound the next, then, simply open your mouth about some thing you HONESTLY have no idea about, wether your bi gay or straight, your letting people knowing follow your uneducated and uninformed idea. So beyond the fact that these individuals enlisted in willful violation of US LAW and MILITARY REGULATIONS and wanted to become leaders charged with enforcing said laws and regulations for the order and effectiveness of the military, and beyond the fact that they are further violating military regulation by wearing their unifors during a political protest, what makes them heroes? They lied in order to get personal gain (free education, military benefits, etc), and to gain personal power (federally recognized commission). They set an example that it is ok to lie and defraud the nation as long as your cause is chic and currently popular. What precedent does that set for not only the misguided young children who consider Goo Goo to be talented, but also to the troops that the rest of us have to lead into combat when they see "officers," and "leaders" violated laws and regulations so they can feel better about themselves? I know I will be called various names and accused of various PC crimes here by all of those who have never worn the uniform but feel the need to criticize those of us who have at every turn. I like Lady Gaga and am happy that she is one of so few music stars who actually play an instrument and can sing. But I was NOT a fan of the meat suit she wore. It was a waste of meat and with all of the people out there who are hungry she could have made a better statement about feeling like a piece of meat than wasting it. I'm no fan of PETA, but I do not like waste like that, especially in these times.

Please don't think for a second that meat is real. Lady Gaga is an animals' rights activist. She was simply making a statement that when people wear leather, fur, etc. it is just as ridiculous as wearing an outfit made of raw meat. She would not really be able to parade around for hours, under bright studio lights, in real raw meat.

Also, she did it so that more people would know about the debate that EVERYONE should have a chance at equal rights, you know, that old EQUALITY thing that our nation was supposed to be founded on? That thing that you and many others enlisted to perserve and protect?

I love how people only want change when it applies specifically to them, when it helps further their own selfish, convoluted agendas. You people are the reason this nation doesn't work.

Try shutting your mouth and hearing someone out next time, imagine yourself as a minority trying to gain recognition in a place that PRIDES itself on its openness, its tolerance, and its understanding and acceptance of ALL people.

"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free"...is BS. It should have read "give me someone who is just like me so there is no diversity, no reason for equality or compassion, only hypocritcal oppression".

Get over yourself. They earned the right to wear those uniforms. In fact, they are STILL earning them because they are still fighting for the things that make America better than the other countries – the rights of anyone to come from any background and still make something of themselves without someone else's stupid bigotry holding them back!.

For the record, GWB was credited with fulfilling his military service as an F-4 pilot. While he did not serve in a compab role for whatever reason, he was honorably discharged.

Additionally, whenever civilians are given "orientation" flights on fighter jets, the military provides them with appropriate attire for the occassion. Everyone on a fighter jet is provided an anti-G suit to prevent black-outs. I believe GWB flew to the ship on a F-14 and a business suit would not be appropriate if there was an emergency which required a bail-out at 600 Knots.

The "Vets" in the picture probably could wear uniforms that are similar the the military uniform, but they cannot wear uniforms, (including insignias, buttons, and medals) if they recieved a less than honorable discharge..

    September 13, 2010 at 11:56 am | Report abuse |
    • Wrong

If you've served and been discharged honorably, you're allowed to wear your uniform however not for political purposes which this obviously was. Once again, these members show little respect for the service and the honor that is required of all military members whether they served before or are still serving. Where are the wounded warriors???

    Dear Lady GaGa:

When you stop contributing to the narco terror wars raging south of the border by way of your "casual" cocaine use, then perhaps then I will take you seriously as a purveyor or peace and love . Until that day comes, you have the blood of young children on your hands. And please do not speak for my gay community. You are not a part of it silly little straight girl.

@suzanne – white people defending civil rights generally didn't take part in the beatings, water hoses, and dogs being set upon blacks so your comment is dumb. lady gaga who casually uses cocaine standing up for any issue makes any person part of the issue she is defending cringe and hope she goes away. It's like the southpark where the kkk support a certain flag and nobody wants them in the discussion.

  169. Questioning

Rather than honoring these military people, I was hoping to click on the story and find she was accompanied by wounded warriors who had suffered for their country rather than making a political statement about gays. The military is reviewing the policy with the President ensuring the review goes forward. Why not take the opportunity to show Gaga cares for those who have fought to near death to accomplish our Nation's goals?

These ex-service members should not be wearing their uniforms to make political statements. Though honorably discharged, they may wear them to a military function such as a reunion of some sort or Halloween. They wrong as servicemembers and they are wrong now. Still they choose to disrespect their service uniforms.

  171. Dissappointed

I am dissappointed with those individuals. They are not supposed to wear the uniform in a political manner. Nor were they supposed to formal wear (ie Mess Dress) outside of a formal event (which I doubt the VMAs are).

    • Suzanne

VMAs are a formal, televised event. You don't see people in t-shirts and jeans there.
And BS on saying that people don't wear their uniforms for political reasons. Whether they should or shouldn't is one thing – but soldiers, both gay and straight, do it anyway.

Actually, unless they are active duty (they obviously aren't) or winners of the Medal of Honor, they can't wear their uniforms for any reason. Considering the political ramifications I doubt if the military will do or say anything, but those rules apply to everyone.

Seeing these people are already out of the military, I don't think there is much anyone can do. And you'll see vets in various uniforms all over the place. I know active duty folks can get in trouble for attending political activities in uniform, but I have no idea how they handle it for people who are no longer active. Have we not seen WWII vets are political rallies with uniforms? If someone can inform us on this matter, I'd love to hear!

The wear of the uniform is reserved for current active duty/reserve/guard members, retirees, and Medal of Honor recipients. By being discharged or choosing to leave before retirement, they forfeit their right to wear the uniform that so many of us wear very proudly. Whether or not they agreed with DADT or not, they knew that if they were outed while serving that they would be punished under law. Don't blame the military for this law. Officers just uphold as they are legally mandated to do.

"Value and utility are not the same thing."

Both are intrinsically LOCKED together, so while they are NOT the exact same thing, utility indeed has value.

      September 13, 2010 at 2:27 pm | Report abuse |
    • Justin C

Value and utility are NOT intrinsically linked...they may seem similar but many things are valued without the specific use being correlated to a specific value. What Lady Gaga means is that each person has an equal value as a human being (one of the founding tenets of this country)...that does not mean that we are all brain surgeons.

And to those who would question LG's moral value, remember that we have had numerous Presidents and/or First Ladies whose morality was not so questioned in light of their substance abuse:

      George W. Bush – recovering alcoholic/COCAINE user
Bill Clinton – "did not inhale" pot smoker
Betty Ford – alcoholic First Lady who founded a world-famous rehab

By these (in)famous standards, among others, substance use does not diminish one's right/ability to stand up for what is right.

I dont think anyone outside of the Military needs to be speaking on this issue. In 13 years of service I have not had any issues for the exception of one, with gays in the military. Its a private matter that when your at war or depend on that person it doesnt matter. But to think that anyone person thoughts or actions or beliefs are bigger then the military's mission is wrong. Dont ask dont tell has worked just fine. People who have been kicked out need to look into maybe the other things they were doing to draw attention to themselves. I the case of my one experiance with needing to deal with this issue in the bad way, its because the soldier kept harrassing others and caused disruption in the platoon. But I would have handled it the same way if it was straight person. Our job in the military is to give up our freedoms to defend others if you dont like it then you can go.

@Mosul Mafia : Wow... just wow. It brings up the ultimatum that either we agree with you or leave a country we all strive to make better. Mmm... let me think about this. I dont care what you believe about all this, because you know what they say about opinions. But saying we either like it or get out only insinuates that when you picked up that gun to fight, you werent defending my rights. You were defending yours. All because I didnt agree with your opinion. What do I say about it? If you dont like it, find a productive way to change it or wait 4 years. And if you dont think I have a right to comment about the military? Ask my father who served in Vietnam, my mother who was a WAC, my brother who is in the navy and all 7 uncles who served in the Marines, Army and Navy. And every single one of them think that every man and woman has a right to pick up a gun and defend the country they hold dear to their hearts. So the next time you say, like it or get the hell out... stop and think about it. Because the shoe may be on the other foot some day.
