Farewell season of 'Oprah' starts with a tripFor the beginning of the end – or, as Oprah Winfrey’s team has phrased it, the premiere of the farewell season – the Queen of Daytime TV rounded up 300 of her “ultimate” viewers to join her in the audience and reminisce about the days gone by, watch as she surprised some hard-core "Oprah" fans – and get free stuff, of course. “I’m going to treasure for the rest of my life the emails and letters you’ve sent,” Winfrey told the audience at the start of the show, many of whom still had tears in their eyes from flipping out when the 56-year-old host first walked out onto the set. “Some of you I know have grown up with me, you’ve raised your children with me, and you all have been on this wild, wild ride with me and I have deep, deep heartfelt gratitude to you all.” And what better way to show gratitude than with an 8-day all-expenses paid excursion to Australia? With John Travolta playing the part of the pilot, no less.
Travolta actually made an appearance early on in the show – since he had the esteemed position of being one of Winfrey's favorite guests – but he reappeared wearing his pilot's uniform after Winfrey announced that all 300 audience members were going to get to shop till they drop in Melbourne and take in the grandeur at the Sydney Opera House. “We're going to Australia!” Winfrey repeated as Australian flags were handed out, confetti rained down and the audience members did everything humanly possible to express extreme excitement. Aside from the trip Down Under, Winfrey celebrated the start of her farewell season with a serenade from Paul Simon and a visit from actor Don Johnson, who finally returned a pair of rhinestone sunglasses she once sent to him in 1986 in attempts to lure him onto her first episode that aired nationally. “The pressure was on for us to get a really big celebrity,” she explained. “After deliberating for some time with my staff and bribing Don Johnson... we decided to do what we do best, a show about and with everyday people. But doing a show about everyday people was the right call and it still is 25 years later.” Click here to watch Winfrey surprise her audience members with the trip.

Peoqle please don't complain. True enough our economy is bad. But a trip to a fabulous place is a blessing, espdcially when your mind and body needs a break. I always wanted to go to an Oprah show taping. But couldn't due to my economic situation. Now with her retiring I guess I won't get that chance. Give Oprah her props ... She's a wonderful person. God bless you Oprah.
I wonder what her Will reads! I'm in awe of her success and just wonder how she did it. What fuel was added to her fire for it to burn so long and bright. I hope she keeps producing movies. The Australian taxpayers are the ones footing the bill for Oprah's generous "gift" of a trip to Australia for the audience.
The Oz government announced that they are paying up to $3million to bring Oprah and the audience to Australia.
Funny that she doesn't mention this.

Hey Oprah haters...how many homes did you help get built in New Orleans? How many pedophiles have you caught? How many scholarships have you given to deserving kids? Just wondering. How about looking at the good things she has done? I would take a trip to Austraila anyday just to get away from the negative people who complain they can't find a job. Work at Walmart, or a grocery store, at least you'll be doing something other than complaining. It may not totally pay the bills, but it could lead to brighter opportunities. You may meet someone who needs the skills you have. I know many people who have found work in their field this way.

Its so unfortunate that no matter what she would have done or said, people only logged on this article to write something derogatory. Its so unfortunate there is so much hate in the world. I pray that outside these blogs and words of hate your lives are truly blessed. If she would have paid 1 million mortgages for 5 months, people would have asked why not the taxes. If she would have paid mortgage and taxes, you would have said why not the utilites. I do not hold any celebrity to any higher standard than I do myself. Maybe some of you should do the same. AMEN..AMEN..AMEN... very well stated Sunny Love. It's honestly a shame how people pass judgement on others. This lady is a billionaire and has helped people in need, but that's not good enough. I wonder if people are writing hurtful messages because they are upset it's not them...but who knows. The more I read articles and watch the news, the more I realize how hateful people are in this world. It's really a sad situation.
I also cannot believe the hate in this world. God must cry when he looks down on it. My husband lost his job in March. We have honestly seen hard times and people who would help don't because of all the dishonest people out there who have used the system. So So sad. We are by far out of our battle but I can promise God has been there with us and without his love we couldn't have made it this far. If this country could go back to simple love and helping your neighbor we would all be ok. But these haters, evil people, they have ruined our country. I know if we loose our home Gods right there with us and thats what matters. I pray for the people in this world so full of hate that they cannot say something good about about anything. Oprah has done much good and helped so many, Its her money and her choice. Thanks Oprah for all the good. Enjoy what you've earned and thanks to all those you've blessed.
Nice...but how about paying people's bills for a year? Or paid for a few mortgages, or paid for a few rents for a year? Taking a trip is so stupid it's unbelievable. There are over 1M unemployed people in the United States. Many of our jobs are now in India, China, Mexico, Hondorus, and other countries.
Sad to see how celebrities turn a blind eye to what's really needed to help people survive. She's not thinking clearly and has lost her mind. How about giving homeless children in school clothing for a year? How about helping homeless families get on their feet? There's more to do to help individuals who truly need it.
I was shocked when 300 people are going halfway around the world on a trip. I'm sure she can write this off in taxes, but clearly the money needs to be spent without abandon. I don't know about her. It's so sad.
For the unemployed, it's a slap in the face. We can't even put enough food on the table (we eat once a day) let alone try to keep a roof over our heads...we are one check from being homeless. When your job gets sent to another country, it's awful. We have no say in keeping our jobs.

Though I agree with you in some lights, others use unemployment to exploit the system, collecting checks and continuing to do nothing about their situation. I feel sorry for those who cannot catch a break, but I don't care for the ones who ride the system and do nothing to better themselves.
How would you know that Oprah's money would be used correctly if she paid everyone's bills? She might be helping some who need her assistance and those who could care less and would take advantage... it's a double-edged sword when you do stuff like that. Perhaps those who don't care either way and will do things unconditionally should do it... and if Oprah is one of those people then she should do it.
Oprah worked very hard to get where she is, and although I really don't like her, she did earn her money. Can you say that about yourself?
It's easy for one to comment on how someone else should share their wealth with others. It's harder for that commenter to actually NOT be on CNN and to be ACTIVELY looking for a job. I suppose it makes sense to see so much hate here. "Oh but " Bad fortune does happen, but that means you gotta keep trying and never giving up. Somewhere along the line you are bound to get a break. It's when you give up completely... that's when you lose.
As always a very generous gesture but wouldn't most of the recipients prefer the cash instead of the trip, in today's economy? I work in a Food Bank where sometimes the people turn down a box of Hamburger Helper because they can't afford to buy the hamburger to make the dish!
