Behind the Scenes on 'Showbiz Tonight': Are Gaga's antics getting old?

The "Showbiz Tonight" staff was surely on the lookout for part two of the big Kanye West vs. Taylor Swift showdown at MTV’s Video Music Awards last night and we weren’t disappointed!

It was this time last year when Kanye famously swiped the mic from the now 20-year-old when she was delivering her speech for her very first VMA win. Kanye was so berated by the public about the whole incident that he basically went into hiding - until now.

In our meeting this morning, we talked about the performance duel and how Taylor clearly forgave Kanye. She sang an emotional song, "Innocent," about forgiveness next to a TV showing the infamous incident between the two. Kanye, on the other hand, left us somewhat baffled.

His expletive laden performance was clearly addressing disappointment in how he behaved, but did he absolve himself? We decided the great debate today should be: Who came out on top? Kanye or Taylor? And do you think this feud is finally over?

But one of the most shocking moments from the VMAs didn’t come from Kanye or Taylor - that award goes to Lady Gaga and her meat dress! We were curious if  it was real, so after the meeting producers put in calls to Lady Gaga’s rep who told us that the meat dress was real and raw. PETA immediately issued their statement about the dress, telling "Showbiz Tonight" in part, “In her line of business, Lady Gaga has a hard time being ‘over the top,’ and wearing a dress made from cuts of dead cows is offensive enough to bring comment, but someone should whisper in her ear that there are more people upset by butchery than impressed by it…”

It’s obvious that PETA was not impressed, but surprisingly, neither were some of the "Showbiz Tonight" producers. We all talked about how Gaga relies on shock value to propel her fame, and Senior Writer Rob Melstein said he can see Gaga’s outrageous ways growing old. Some of the producers agreed, saying the meat dress idea seemed desperate. So what do you think? Is Lady Gaga’s outrageous shtick getting old? Or do you love it? Weigh in on the "Showbiz" poll and join us for the great Gaga debate live at 5 p.m. ET today on HLN.

And remember, we're still TV's most provocative entertainment news show seven days a week at 11pm ET/PT!

Not a fan...I have a natural block to those who call themselves "an artist" come from a rich family with butt loads of money and take themselves way too seriously. Her music is fine, but she's not as great as the hype.

The meat dress was nasty, but then again, so is eating meat. I was a vegetarian for 10 years, and now a carnivore again. My motto is everything in moderation. Anyone who eats beef can't throw stones, it would just be hypocritical. Let her do her thing, she's out there for entertainment – like her or hate her, it's your choice.

I love Gaga! But I think her new perfume should be called Eau Du Tartare

lady gaga does not need to rely on shock value, and her "antics" aren't growing old...as is evident by how many awards she won.

Gaga is just revealing her artistic influences. Anyone who is interested in the Lowbrow Art movement knows Mark Ryden and this particular image. http://www.markryden.com/paintings/index.html. He had a show in LA called the Meat Show.

Everyone keeps saying she's a "smart cookie," but honestly i don't really think so. She's just a product of the pop machine, just like Beyonce, Beiber, Rhinna, Katy Perry, etc. I highly doubt that she's the only master behind her madness. If she were really smart, she should cut it out with the politics (her "viewpoints" are so predictable and commercial that it is ridiculous...), learn to vary her "outrageous" wardrobe (dressing weird is cool but after awhile it gets really old...at some point, it is just not going to be all that shocking), stop constantly feeding her ego (i'm sorry, i'm a gaga fan but i feel like each time she mentions her fans it's like she's feeding her ego...it's like, ok, we get it, you love the fans as much as you love yourself), and go on vacation. She's just too over-hyped, people WILL eventually tire of her unless she sometimes gives us a break (even fans need a break from their favorite artist sometimes...it's healthy), and comes back even stronger and badder than ever.

I love her regardless of what 'antics' she's up to. She is constantly trying to be innovative, creative and yes...outrageous. She is an artist..not some Taylor Swift stylist produced fem-bot. She's just so damn talented regardless of who she offends. Who the hell cares what Peta says anyway? Don't eat meat...fine..but shut up about it.

I'm really back and forth with her, I like her music a lot, but she vexes me. Some days she's all about others and then the next day its this self indulgent crazy fest. She fuels her own narcissism (which I'm not saying is bad, gurl can do whatever she wants) and at the same time makes headlines for herself. She is an entertainer in every sense of the word. Love her or hate her the woman is hard to ignore. You're good if you can inspire the people who love you to write about you, but you're awesome when you can inspire those who hate you to write about you.

Props to her, she's a smart cookie.

I believe that all the haters who talk about 'oh, it's just shock value' and 'she needs to stop it!' are just angry that they weren't up on stage, accepting awards while wearing raw meat. Tsk tsk. I guess we all can't be winners.

Anyone in my generation that namechecks Sylvia Plath in a song automatically earns my respect, since most people my age probably don't know who she is.

"the music she makes isn't exactly that deep and creative"

You should listen to 'Dance in the Dark'. That song is very meaningful.

That song is beautiful and meaning, but that's just one song. She makes mostly vapid pop music with one or two actually meaningful songs. One song doesn't hide the fact that the rest of her songs are just typical catchy pop music that basically sounds similar and just as catchy as the music of Beiber, Rhianna, Katy Perry, and Beyonce. I just wish/hope Gaga will just make better music instead of the typical crap she's making, she's just too talented to just stick to the same ol' catchy pop thing.

Well, yeah, I'll admit that most of her stuff is silly pop stuff geared to the dancefloors and radio, but she's proven with 'Paparazzi' and most of the the Fame Monster that she can write about deeper subjects. So we shouldn't count her out.
I can't wait to see where she'll go with her next album.

@ Frank- Yes, me too. I can't wait for the day when she calms down and stops taking herself so seriously. it's just a turn off, that's all, but i do realize that she's young and maybe with time when she's in her 30's she will be more mature and not as eager to make a point all the time. I hope she can prove that she's more than just a pop star who wears crazy outfits for attention, i'm just afraid that if she overdoes it people will just count her out. sometimes less really is more.

Or she could end up just as eccentric as Bjork. Which isn't a bad thing. =P

Maybe she should take a break from the political stuff. That tends to make people so stiff.
I definitely can't wait to see what she'll be like in 10 or 15 years.

Frank, stop right there, no artist is and never will be as eccentric as bjork lol. Bjork has a natural, raw, unforced eccentricity that strictly comes from within and from nature, Gaga certainly is crazy but she's by no means a bjork. If she didn't try so hard and have to take such a political stance on every outfit she wears and things she says maybe I would categorize her as being like bjork...but nah, gaga's eccentricity is far too commercial, where is bjork is entirely natural with it and does it without having to dress too weird ALL the time. Glad to know that you like bjork though. 😉 She's a class all her own.

    • Frank

Oh, Bjork has only been my favorite solo singer for years. She's an inspiration. Nice to meet another fan. 🙂
I think Gaga seriously needs to stop explaining her outfits. Just ignore it when people look at her weird or ask her questions about it, as if she's wearing a t-shirt and jeans. You should never explain your art, anyway. Let the people figure it out!

I was just going to say that! That's what I also mean by Gaga taking herself too seriously. If you are going to wear kooky/crazy/bizarre outfits, DON'T EXPLAIN WHY YOU DID IT. It just takes the fun out of wondering why she wore it in the first place. I get tired of she and lots of her fans explaining everything about her videos and costumes. It's not art if one has to explain it. Same concept as a joke, if you have to explain it, there is no joke. I just find it a bit contradictory that she's all about saying what she believes in but then has to explain herself as if she's apologizing. It confuses me.

Yes, I've been a fan of bjork for years, i've seen her in concert many times, she's just so ethereal and yet she's so humble and wonderful.

I was very lucky, and I saw her in concert twice within the same week! And up close! It's truly a breathtaking experience. Even though it takes her 3-4 years to make an album each one is so worth it. Lady Gaga does need a break. I just fear that she's going down that line of being "overexposed." She may wear out her shtick if she keeps chugging away at it. Would be nice if she could do the weird outfits once in awhile, and other times just look glamorous and come off as low key, like mix it up a little, weird is always good but doing it too much is really just too much. I think it would maybe make more people like her more for her being a real artist instead of being simply a Madonna/Elton John knock off.

You must live in a really big city or something. She never comes to where I live. lol
That would probably be good. After all, she's going to run out of ideas. Or it's going to be like what my mom once said, she's going to need a pyramid bigger than the Great Pyramid of Giza to house all of her props that she said she'll be buried with.

I used to be a fan of Gaga, when she was more fun and didn't take herself so seriously, nowadays though i'm not so much turned off by her antics and costumes, but more so by her personality. she talks as if she's Lady Jesus. I know she is young and is really popular and successful but jeez, she needs to give it a rest, her music is catchy and enjoyable to listen to in the car or in a club but c'mon the music she makes isn't exactly that deep and creative. I'm tired of her acting as if she is the voice of the world and the most creative individual that god ever created.

I admire Lady Gaga's bravery and odd choices in dress, but I think it is getting to the point of her being just too desperate to make a point about how creative and "deep" she is. She's an extreme narcissist, every word she says is about how how gifted she is and how much she loves kissing the fan's ass. It's just too much. If she was really as creative or interesting as she makes herself out to be, she wouldn't have to rely so much on the antics.

Obviously its not getting old, because people still talk about her like they did at last year's vma's. Its artistic and creative. Its DIFFERENT, and thats what we all need in our lives.

Yes people still talk about her, but that doesn't mean that everyone that talks about her likes her or actually appreciates what she does. So you are saying we all need to wear raw meat on our bodies, that's what we all need?

@ Frank- Is that what you say to every celebrity? Even people like OJ? Or some of the few celebrities who are pedophiles? Not that I'm comparing Gaga to OJ and pedophiles but i think the whole "attention is attention" phrase is just a bit tired and uncreative. There is such thing as bad publicity; for some celebrities, it practically ruins their career. In Gaga's case it's not going to do any harm to her career, but c'mon now, not all bad publicity is actually good.

Sadly, even the criminal stuff can fall under that because of the way society is. We just want a juicy story, after all. Even the moral crusaders flying into a moral panic thrive off of it.
I'm not saying this is a good thing -it's just how it is.

No. Lady Gaga is an artist. She's not trying to shock, she's just being creative.

Just being creative? If somebody else were to do this, I bet you that you would say that it was stupid or crazy, but when Gaga does it it's innovative. C'mon. She's just relying on shock value. This is beyond creative, do you think she's doing this just to "be creative"? She's doing it for shock value, let's be real here.

No, actually I wouldn't. I like that kind of art. I was one of the few people who liked Bjork's swan dress, for instance. I like it when people stand out, even though they'll be criticized for daring to be different.

I personally liked it when Gaga did the more fun (and funny) costumes, nowadays she just takes herself too seriously with the "artistic" outfits. Maybe it's just me but i like it better when somebody can wear a bad/interesting outfit without taking themselves so seriously in the process. Her self-indulgent ego is just on overload right now and it shows.
