Gabourey Sidibe is an Elle covergirl

Big things keep happening for Gabourey Sidibe.

The Academy Award-nominated actress is one of four stars chosen to grace the October issue of Elle magazine. Sidibe, “The Hills” star Lauren Conrad, “Transformers" actress Megan Fox and actress Amanda Seyfried were selected as part of the fashion magazine’s “favorite 25-somethings” in honor of Elle’s 25th anniversary.

The plus-sized Sidibe dons a green, jeweled Tadashi Shoji jersey cocktail dress on her cover and told the magazine about her own 25th birthday.

“Part of me thought it would be weird if people knew I was a grown-up playing a teenager in ‘Precious’,” she said. “So I had a twenty-first-birthday party. We had drinks and went to a strip club called Shotgun Willie’s.”

Sidibe has parlayed her success - she was nominated for a best actress Oscar for the 2009 film - into roles in the new Showtime series “The Big C” and the forthcoming film “Yelling to the Sky.”

To read what Lauren Conrad, Amanda Seyfried, Megan Fox and others had to say about being 25, head over to ELLE.com.

In the same way there is a difference between being anorexic and being naturally slim, there is also a clear difference between being naturally larger/curvier and being morbidly obese. Gabourey Sidibe, although very talented, is morbidly obese (to the point where you can't see her eyes; probably no longer gets her period and breathes ridiculously heavily when not sitting down). Therefore, I don't think it was a right move by Elle in endorsing such level of unhealth (Particularly when there are so many talented, beautiful and healthy women of color, like Zoe Saldana and even Mo'nique (who alhough large is clearly healthy) that deserve an Elle cover).

I don't care what people say about her bubbly disposition. Someone who's that big is shame-eating on a near constant basis. That level of obesity is on the same level as pretty serious alcoholism or gambling. You might be able to put on a brave face in limited situations, but you're dying alone and slowly.

The girl needs help. There are no two ways about it.

Indeed she might be a good actress, but I don't care how confident she claims to be ,baby girl is simply too big. She might put on this facade for the press. When she gets up in the morning and see herself in the mirror she can't possibly say she is satisfied with this figure at such a young age. Few example of woman that said they're happy about their round figure but few yrs down the line decided to loose the wait Monique, Jennifer Hudson. Im not promoting anorexia, or the skinny b**** figure, but you need to care for ur health, and at this size I don't think you healthy.

To Britanny: You are right we are brave behind a computer screen and I wouldn't say those things to her face, because she would then proceed to sit on me and eat me. I must say though that she has nice big cheeks, probably comes in handy during winter when she has to store food in them before hibernating.

She is simply inappropriate for a high fashion magazine whose contents are devoted to elegant and slender models. Her picture would be suitable on another type, perhaps one devoted to weight loss or something similiar. If she slims down and loses a lot of weight, I feel certain we will read that she hated being overweight and was crying on the inside since she knew how she looked and how people viewed her.

My copy of Elle arrived today and the cover picture is of a young blonde girl. Inside, on the back pages, is a small picture of Ms. Sidibe. Are they having different covers for different demographics? Or, have they changed the cover after all the negative remarks? The magazine is full of the usual very tall and slender models. A fat woman on the cover would be completely out of place for the rest of the magazine pictures and articles.

As a black woman, I am insulted. When ever has a Elle covergirl's body taken up 2/3 of the cover? This is embarrassing. Surely, they could have kept the same high standards that they have for White cover models and chosen an attractive and talented Black cover model. Hollywood would much rather promote our obese and matronly looking women – Monique, Queen Latifah and now Gabourney. Where are the hot, young, Black counterparts to the hot, young White women that receive so much publicity? The young Black Megan Goodes and the 100's of other hot young White actresses. Equal rights did not extend to Hollywood.

The following comment is in no way a reflection on Gabourey Sidibe, I am directly addressing the INDUSTRY behind this choice which is overtly participating in the SOFT BIGOTRY OF LOWERED STANDARDS. The Fashion Industry is well known for allowing only the minimalist of opportunities for beautiful and talented African American women to shine. Many of the most beautiful Black women have NEVER been offered the opportunity to feature on Elle Magazine. Although they commonly post unknown White models on the cover, they do not do the same for Black models – only a few Black actresses are given this honor. What results is a dirth of opportunties for Black models. And now look at this situation. While they have NEVER put a severely obese and unstylized White woman on the cover, they have done so with this African American woman. Again, the soft bigotry of lowered expectations. Elle is basically saying to the black community, "Hey you wanted us to put on a Black covergirl, well HERE'S your Black covergirl." I can only imagine the prolonged and raucous laughter that occured in the Editor's meeting for the final Elle cover.

Being obese is dangerous and a heart attack waiting to happen. Anorexic people are also not healthy. Why do people equate being beautiful to weight? Beautiful should be how you balance your life by being healthy and active, not by how much you weigh. You could be a size 8 but a very active and healthy person and a size 0 with a lot of problems. She is a a beautiful person on the inside and out but she is NOT a healthy person. She couldn't be. So while we should commend her on her success and on being confident, we should also encourage her to loose weight otherwise I don't think she will be living a healthy and long life.

I just don't see the beauty that others say they see. She is morbidly obese and it is disgusting to look at. I don't see beautiful there at all. I'm not saying it to be mean; it isn't about race. I'm african-american too. I don't understand why the media is so keen on promoting this girl. I saw her on Saturday Night Live and I didn't see anything that I would remotely call great. I agree with those who say that in a short time she will disappear from the spot light. If you are young and morbidly obese, illnesses, are definitely in your future. It takes time. That is not the same as someone who may not be that overweight and has illnesses. There is a genetic component. Michelle Obama has made childhood obesity a priority for the nation. The NFL has play60 which is meant to get kids moving. If this girl wants to be known for something great, then she needs to lose weight and show others who are in the same situation, that it can be done.

Outside of Johnny Wier and Austen Scarlett.....not happening people. Yes, I like both guys....smart, talented, funny....not afraid of socieity. Yes!!!! This world needs more people like Gaby, Johnny and Austen.

Cass Elliot died of a heart attack. She did not choke to death...urban legend. Try reading the British medical inquiry (report) regarding her death. Plus, her family confirmed the heart attack. Yes, every skinny people die of heart attacks at 32...not just ful lfigure women.

Remember, Karen Capenter died of a heart attack at 33....due to self-induced vomiting in an effort to be thin.

So, stop judging and accept people as they are......thin, fat, tall, short, gay, straight, just maybe society would be a kinder place to exist.

The fat fear mongers are practically praying this woman drops dead of a heart attack tomorrow so we can keep buying the idea that obesity is imminently killing us all so we better go vegan, get a gym membership or whatever right now. I certainly don't advocate being obese for a myriad of reasons but to suggest this woman hide her head in shame for fear that she may normalize what already occurs in nature is ridiculous. Truth is, fat should not be feared, that creates eating disorders. It should be dealt with in a way that people are healthy. And I would not be surprised if she were NOT diabetic, NOT hypertensive, NOT high in cholesterol... just FAT and perhaps some lower back and joint issues but nothing fatal. Let it go, folks, she's here to stay, her fat... is up to her.

Putting aside the issues listed by previous commenters., the fact of the matter is that ELLE is a FASHION magazine, not entertainment publication. Like it or not, fashion is about style and beauty, both of which, unfortunately, Ms. Sidibe lacks (and ELLE stylists and photographers made no attempt to provide). Yes, she has a friendly smile, and is attactive. Yes, she is a good actress, but no, she is not an appropriate cover model for a FASHION magazine.

If Elle wanted to make a point, they might have remained consistent to their past and given a "plus-sized" white woman the cover. Obesity, even morbid obesity, is a real problem in the Black community. Gaby is celebrated now, but will she see the age of 40? (John Candy and Chris Farley were funny, talented, and successful. And they are gone.) I love Gaby's charm but her size frightens me. As she is, she is a throwback to an old stereotype and no role model at all.

It's beyond me why people feel the need to bash skinny girls so to bolster up the beauty of a big woman, and yet get upset when people bash big women for being too big. Stop being hypocritical. All women are beautiful regardless of their weight, size, color, etc. If everyone in this world were the same height, size, and weight what a boring place we'd be living in. But I guess people have to have something to pick somebody on....you are either too big, too small, too skinny, not skinny enough, not "real" enough, etc. Nobody is ever satisfied, eh?

Ok, first off, regardless of what u think about someone u see in the media or in movies, unless u know them personally and they have affected u personally, u can't judge! All I can say is...What u put out, u get back & while ur trying to knock someone, ur really knocking YOURSELF!! Put that energy into changing ur own life & being successful not into someone who u will probably never meet or even know!! Don't be jealous when someone is doing their thing and unaffected by people who have NO lives!! Gabi, Congrats on ur success, I hope ur determination and confidence will influence others to go for their dreams in spite of who they are, what they look like, or where they've been cuz its about where ur going in the end!!! And also, childrens role models should come first from home and their schools! Don't base ur childrens destiny on anyone u don't know & more than likely aren't thinking about ur children anyway!! Do what works for u people & leave the rest with the man upstairs!!

I say go for it. Not everyone is a size 6. I love it how being a full figured woman now starts at size 12. Ah, people; 12 is not full figured. The average woman in America is about a size 14-16. Okay, that being stated. I can get on to my comment.

If this woman loves herself, what is the big deal. It is very apparent to me that she does love herself. That shows when anyone talks to her. She is quite confident in what she is doing. She didn't let the sterotypical machine try to turn her into something she isn't. If Ms. Gabby feels the need to lose weight she will do so, but it will be on her terms.

I think it's great that Hollywood is accepting who she is and dealing with it.

As for Jill Scott. Oh, I do love her. I agree that there have been many other fuller figured gals in the mainstream; but the public seems to be fascinated with Gabbie. So, you go on with your bad self.

We are always dealing with such extremes in this society. Miss Sidibe is not a representative of average and somewhat overweight people she appears to be morbidly obese. Yes, she has confidence despite the criticism sent her way but she seems to be overcompensating by stating how pretty she thinks she is– which is always in bad taste no matter what size you are– people who think kindly of her overlook this because we feel sorry for her because of her weight. I've seen her interviewed in person and she played most of her comments for laughs by continually bragging about her supposed good looks. People talk about her as though she has so much substance but she seemed really silly and immature. She has come of age in the talk show era where if you overcome an addiction or outlive and surpass school bullies you are some sort of hero. She recently stated in an interview that if yoga were a person she would stab it and that one shouldn't have to suffer to be thin or pretty. Extremes again– yoga is a mind and body practice not known for causing pain. Its probably one of the best holistic ways to deal with weight. There's a big difference between extreme dieting and exercising and moderate exercising and a gentle practice like yoga–and this girl's supposed to be educated.

She is living her life and making the best of her opportunities. Those that follow the creed of judging a book by its cover are unqualified to comment on her "health." You do not have a basis for your ridiculous theories. She does NOT have to conform to anyone's idea of an appropriate appearance. She does NOT have to explain her medical history or her choices to any of you. She does not have to ask your permission to be happy. And "you" do not have the right to question the choices she makes for herself. You only have the right to question the choices you make for YOURSELF. As for me, I choose to smile at this lovely picture of a woman who has grabbed life by the horns and chosen to share her happiness with anyone who wants a glimpse!

Hrrmm... I bet any amount of money that if some new celebrity who was skinny sprang up, created a fantastic movie, and all the while confirmed she was anorexic and proud, that there was nothing wrong with her because she liked "who she was", the criticism would be enormous, and NO ONE would be making statements like "You Go Girl!", "She's a role model for all the other anorexic girls!!".
Not saying ALL skinny people are anorexic, but you have got to be delusional if you think this girl could possibly be healthy. It's one thing to have a little more meat on your bones, maybe be "chubby", but this girl is obese. Gabourey Sidibe is just another word for : "LANDFILL" Just a human being using her body as a "landfill". A "Dump".
When I see pictures of her, I think of a "Landfill". A landfill, also known as a dump or rubbish dump, is a site for the disposal of waste materials by burial and is the oldest form of waste treatment. Historically, landfills have been the most common methods of organized waste disposal and remain so in many places around the world.

Cass Elliot died at 32 years old. (Of the Mama's and Papa's) Seriously over weight. Elliot died choking on a ham sandwich. The police noted that a partly eaten sandwich had been found in her room and that she choked while eating it.
Same thing is going to happen to this Elephant named: Gabby. "if" she doesn't do something about her seriously over weight. In the photo of her, Gabby, as she leans back her head, you can almost "see" a huge bag of M*M's going into her mouth. On average, obesity reduces life expectancy by six to seven years: a BMI of 30–35 reduces life expectancy by two to four years, while severe obesity (BMI > 40) reduces life expectancy by 10 years. Science is behind these findings. Someone should say: Hey! Look! There is STILL an elephant in the room. And stop trying to ignore it. Gabby is an Elephant. Plain and simple. And the magazine "Elle" is doing her a great huge injustice, by promoting her obesity, in print.

there's nothing wrong with being successful whatever size you are. But I think the point a lot of people are making is like it or not SOME kids are considering her a role model. It's been a while since she's been in precious, if she were serious about losing weight, which I don't think she is, she would have hired a trainer and lost some of it by now. You can love your self to the grave by overeating, if that's what she wants and you as fans want, looks like y ou're going to get your wish. On the other hand, NO ONE can say that that much weight is healthy. She might not be feeling it as much now because she is relatively young, but in a few years and MORE weight added, it will become a tremendous problem for her. Losing weight is never easy, but I do hope she has people who are lovingly trying to steer her into that direction. I would hate to think that people are over-looking the problem to make her feel good; she might not consider that losing weight is important if that's all she gets. I don't expect her to be a stick, but there is a heck of a lot between being a stick and what she is now, SUPER obese.

However, I believe that her obesity is a welcome change from the skinny pasty looking stars that we see today. Gabby has more talent in one of her toes than HALF of Hollywood~Her size should not define who she is or how far she can go. For far too long Hollywood has had a "certain look" and regardless of the talent or quality of the actresses casting was done based on marketability. It's sad and as a African American woman, plus size at that I admire Gabby for her beauty, poise and grace....I have confidence, high self esteem and so does she and her continued success is riding on her acting ability and NOT her weight. Yes, there is a problem with obesity in the United States. I believe the point to this cover is that she's a talented woman regardless of her size. I don't believe the intent was to promote obesity. She's overweight and I'm sure her doctor has told her she needs to lose some of the excess. Lay off her. As far as the comment about her being a "real" woman. Whether skinny or chunky or whatever, we are all real women. It just happens that the "normal" woman is around a size 10. For those that are super skinny, good for you. For those that aren't, that's okay. What matters is that we do our best to stay active and healthy.

So why not put a size 10 on Elle? Or heck even 12 or 14, heck even 18! But Sidibe is twice that. It's not healthy, it's not attractive. She's lovely on the inside but a horrible example on the outside.

I must say though the person who says they're now 110 @ 5'6....that doesn't sound healthy either. One extreme isn't better than another.

When will people stop praising bad behavior? Sodomy is now seen as trendy... Now obesity is seen as courageous. That girl needs help. Obesity is still dangerous. No matter how much politically correct magazine covers that's out there, obese people need a wake up call. Gabourey needs to focus on her health and lay off those cheeseburgers and deep fried food.
She's got the money now to eat healthy, I hope she takes advantage of that.

To the person who weighed 376 and is now 350...wow- a whole 26 pounds. That would be admirable if you were, say,a bit overweight. But you're not. You're considered morbidly obese. And studies show, fat people have a shorter life expectancy than a healthy person. That's what people mean by she's gonna die....by the fact that she doesn't control what she puts in her mouth. Why she thinks she needs to eat 30 cheeseburgers a day is beyond me....

@Jen.....one word "shallow". You seriously need some help in empathy if you feel the need to judge and belittle people b/c of their weight. Don't you think over-weight people know that they are over-weight. The last thing they need is someone who think they know all, telling them what they already know. IF you were a size 18, you should already know this. Just remember these people have feelings and are more than what the scales say. I would rather have 1 loving over-weight freind than 10 shallow 110 lb know it alls 🙁 You're a really sad person!

I find it very interesting that people are going on about Elle "promoting" obesity because of this cover....does that mean when the cover normally shows an "unhealthy" too thin actress they are promoting anorexia? I thought the covers were to showcase successful show biz people. Also to the bloggers who use words like "sick" , "pig, "disgusting"....no matter what your physical size or shape, you will always be considered "ugly" because of your nasty beliefs and opinions. A person's physical attributes can change (such as losing weight)...but you ignorance, shallowness and immaturity will haunt you for the rest of your lives.

There are so many so called skinny models and actresses who have not made it like Gabby. Being thin and beautiful alone is not going to make it anymore to make it big in hollywood. They are looking for something much more deeper in a person. Stop hating because an obese black woman made it. Black women who are overweight such as Oprah, Monique, Gabby, Queen Latifah have proven you don't have to be a size 2 to make it.

I am 29yrs old, weighed 376lbs [now 350lbs], and I have no health ailments...ONLY BY GOD'S GRACE!!!! I have friends who are a few years younger than me, the same age as me, or a couple of years older than me and have health problems, i.e.: diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. Many are shocked that I have a clean bill of health. People are talking about her coloring and weight; why can’t we just be HAPPY for the girl!! No, I don’t know her personally, but you should always be happy for someone if something positive happens to them!! No one is appalled, shocked, or astonished that the other skinny ladies are on the cover; so, why should it matter if Gabourey is on the cover of Elle.

Someone commented that she’s going to die, if she doesn’t loose weight. FYI to that person, WE’RE ALL GOING TO DIE!! Who said she’s the epitome of being healthy. No one speaks up when the photographers [or whomever] are airbrushing the models to make their skin clearer or waist smaller…that’s an issue!!

I think it is completely unacceptable for Elle and other media outlets to promote this type of obesity. They are making it seem like it is acceptable to be unhealthy and not give a d*mn about it. With the obesity epidemic already prevalent in this country, the last thing we need is obese, unhealthy role models. Obesity is linked to so many health problems that it is irresponsible to promote it as an acceptable lifestyle. I think there should be women of different shapes and sizes on magazine covers, but I think they all need to be healthy – neither obese women nor anorexic women should be on magazine covers. Where are all the healthy women who eat right and exercise?

I agree that we need realistic body types on magizine covers but let's not fool ourselves into thinking the stick thin models are any healthier due to their size. Health and size are most times related and there are times they are not. I don't think its any healthier showcasing folks with drug and alcohol issues but they still do. So why when it applies to size is it wrong. Also role models start at home-they shouldn't just be people your kids have never seen but on tv,sports, and movies.

"let's not fool ourselves into thinking the stick thin models are any healthier due to their size." Amen to that. At 108 pounds, I was still a size 12 because of my skeleton - pelvis/ribs/shoulders - not because there was an ounce of fat anywhere on me. At 150 pounds, I was *still* a size 12, and a lot healthier. But because I discovered as a calorie-burning athlete that I'll never be a size 0, it was never anything I strove to accomplish.

Do we have to have pithy leads for all celebrities' physical differences? ("It's all Greek to Nia Vardalos." "You'd be blind not to like Marlee Matlin.") Please! Gabourey Sidibe is a serious actress, who by virtue of her physicality, can play parts other actresses will never be able to play, which opens up whole avenues for storytelling on film. Don't put her on the cover of Elle because she's fat. Put her on the cover of Elle because she's talented and BEAUTIFUL.

Gabby and Elle, I am so proud of you. It's about time magazines showed "REAL" beautiful women. It's too bad more large women don't exude the confidence level that you do. If that is really you, Dr. Phil, shame on you!!! You should be supportive and encouraging a young woman to feel good about who and what she is. Your comments are from the dark ages and should be ignored. People are missing the point here–a beautiful and confident woman who is self assured and happy with herself. More power to positive feedback in this very negative world. Elle, thank you for producing a beautiful cover.

CathyM – being morbidly obese doesn't make you a "real" woman any more than being anorexic prevents you from being a "real" woman. Having two X chromosomes makes you a real woman.

I though Gabys sitcoms shouldve been "Big Love". Oh, well.

They could have at least not made her take up the entire cover, it's almost rubbing in the fact about her weight.

Quit playing the politically correct role. She can continuously say she's happy with the way she looks but there is NO WAY she could feel good about being a potential walking heart attack. She needs to stop promoting this farce. And anyone that is jumping on her bandwagon agreeing with her needs to cut the crap.
