Gabourey Sidibe is an Elle covergirl
Big things keep happening for Gabourey Sidibe.
The Academy Award-nominated actress is one of four stars chosen to grace the October issue of Elle magazine. Sidibe, “The Hills” star Lauren Conrad, “Transformers" actress Megan Fox and actress Amanda Seyfried were selected as part of the fashion magazine’s “favorite 25-somethings” in honor of Elle’s 25th anniversary.
The plus-sized Sidibe dons a green, jeweled Tadashi Shoji jersey cocktail dress on her cover and told the magazine about her own 25th birthday.
“Part of me thought it would be weird if people knew I was a grown-up playing a teenager in ‘Precious’,” she said. “So I had a twenty-first-birthday party. We had drinks and went to a strip club called Shotgun Willie’s.”
Sidibe has parlayed her success - she was nominated for a best actress Oscar for the 2009 film - into roles in the new Showtime series “The Big C” and the forthcoming film “Yelling to the Sky.”
To read what Lauren Conrad, Amanda Seyfried, Megan Fox and others had to say about being 25, head over to ELLE.com.

The first sentence of this article is very condescending. A snide attempt at humor that comes across as snarky.
In the same way there is a difference between being anorexic and being naturally slim, there is also a clear difference between being naturally larger/curvier and being morbidly obese. Gabourey Sidibe, although very talented, is morbidly obese (to the point where you can't see her eyes; probably no longer gets her period and breathes ridiculously heavily when not sitting down). Therefore, I don't think it was a right move by Elle in endorsing such level of unhealth (Particularly when there are so many talented, beautiful and healthy women of color, like Zoe Saldana and even Mo'nique (who alhough large is clearly healthy) that deserve an Elle cover).
Gabby is pretty gross. She's on for her personality, not for her beauty.
I don't care what people say about her bubbly disposition. Someone who's that big is shame-eating on a near constant basis. That level of obesity is on the same level as pretty serious alcoholism or gambling. You might be able to put on a brave face in limited situations, but you're dying alone and slowly.
The girl needs help. There are no two ways about it.
She is beautiful and talented
Check out this video on YouTube:
Indeed she might be a good actress, but I don't care how confident she claims to be ,baby girl is simply too big. She might put on this facade for the press. When she gets up in the morning and see herself in the mirror she can't possibly say she is satisfied with this figure at such a young age. Few example of woman that said they're happy about their round figure but few yrs down the line decided to loose the wait Monique, Jennifer Hudson. Im not promoting anorexia, or the skinny b**** figure, but you need to care for ur health, and at this size I don't think you healthy.
To Britanny: You are right we are brave behind a computer screen and I wouldn't say those things to her face, because she would then proceed to sit on me and eat me. I must say though that she has nice big cheeks, probably comes in handy during winter when she has to store food in them before hibernating.
I sure hope you don't think youre funny you are so judgemental!! I will pray for you..god bless
I cant not believe how bold people can be behind a computer screen and i bet any amount of money you wont say any of those comments to her face. Its a shame how judgmental people can be. I wonder how many of you all that are judging her smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol every weekend or more..being overweight is not the only unhealthy way of life... think about it people and she got more money than all of yall so I dont think she even cares about yall little comments because she doin it big and yall just sitting looking at HER magazine cover so she is doin something right!!!
Keep up the GoOD Work
I see you
This Woman is definitely an inspiration
Love everything about her.
She is someone to be proud of
She didn't let all the bitter people in the Business
and on the streets stop her from being who she is
Can't please the World all the time but you can Please yourself and that's
poetiQ rOses Loves Gabby
She is simply inappropriate for a high fashion magazine whose contents are devoted to elegant and slender models. Her picture would be suitable on another type, perhaps one devoted to weight loss or something similiar. If she slims down and loses a lot of weight, I feel certain we will read that she hated being overweight and was crying on the inside since she knew how she looked and how people viewed her.
My copy of Elle arrived today and the cover picture is of a young blonde girl. Inside, on the back pages, is a small picture of Ms. Sidibe. Are they having different covers for different demographics? Or, have they changed the cover after all the negative remarks? The magazine is full of the usual very tall and slender models. A fat woman on the cover would be completely out of place for the rest of the magazine pictures and articles.
Better a happy and successful "cow" with a good personlity than be a jealous and meanspirited "cat" lke so many of the haters here. I'm happy for Gaboury Sidibe. She has as much right to enjoy her success as any else, regardless of her body size! So some of yuou just need to STFU right now!
On a lighter note...My 21st b-day is this Sunday. I want to party like Gabi! Get smashed and hit str!p clubs! Hell yeah!
A lot of mean people here... Are insults all you have to say and write? Then go back to school, hit the books, experience reality because you don't deserve to exist if all you have to contribute to the world is hate and ignorance.
Take your load of crapola someplace else. This chick's fat, period. Why don't YOU go play in traffic or help your mommy do laundry until your shift at Micky D's starts. Moron!
She is a pig, nothing about her is the least bit attractive. I resent the media foisting her on impressionable young people. She is not normal, not healthy, not a role model, not pretty, not worthy of our attention at all.
As a black woman, I am insulted. When ever has a Elle covergirl's body taken up 2/3 of the cover? This is embarrassing. Surely, they could have kept the same high standards that they have for White cover models and chosen an attractive and talented Black cover model. Hollywood would much rather promote our obese and matronly looking women – Monique, Queen Latifah and now Gabourney. Where are the hot, young, Black counterparts to the hot, young White women that receive so much publicity? The young Black Megan Goodes and the 100's of other hot young White actresses. Equal rights did not extend to Hollywood.
Queen Latifah is matronly looking? Personally I think she's a beautiful woman.
The following comment is in no way a reflection on Gabourey Sidibe, I am directly addressing the INDUSTRY behind this choice which is overtly participating in the SOFT BIGOTRY OF LOWERED STANDARDS. The Fashion Industry is well known for allowing only the minimalist of opportunities for beautiful and talented African American women to shine. Many of the most beautiful Black women have NEVER been offered the opportunity to feature on Elle Magazine. Although they commonly post unknown White models on the cover, they do not do the same for Black models – only a few Black actresses are given this honor. What results is a dirth of opportunties for Black models. And now look at this situation. While they have NEVER put a severely obese and unstylized White woman on the cover, they have done so with this African American woman. Again, the soft bigotry of lowered expectations. Elle is basically saying to the black community, "Hey you wanted us to put on a Black covergirl, well HERE'S your Black covergirl." I can only imagine the prolonged and raucous laughter that occured in the Editor's meeting for the final Elle cover.
It's really fashionable to say these fatso's are courageous or real or whatever you want to say to justify the politically correct, but truthfully, she's fat. This lardo is a health hazard and all of your can cry a river when she drops dead of a coronary before she's 30.
Being obese is dangerous and a heart attack waiting to happen. Anorexic people are also not healthy. Why do people equate being beautiful to weight? Beautiful should be how you balance your life by being healthy and active, not by how much you weigh. You could be a size 8 but a very active and healthy person and a size 0 with a lot of problems. She is a a beautiful person on the inside and out but she is NOT a healthy person. She couldn't be. So while we should commend her on her success and on being confident, we should also encourage her to loose weight otherwise I don't think she will be living a healthy and long life.
I agree with all you say, but you used an incorrect word.
loose = not tight
lose = mislay
OMG – you've got to be kidding me!!!!!
I'm glad that she is on the cover but I do think they could have got a better picture they have also lightened her skin.
Eyes shut, head back... her only look.
She bursts across the cover and I love it. Women, big and small. short and tall, whatever they are physical should be respected and honoured for who they are, not what they look like. She's as worthy a covergirl as any other!
Boy that cooch must stank
This is so racist, showing a big fat black blob on the cover!!!
She's morbidly obese (that means so freakin' fat she's endangering her life, to all you ignorant sheep) and she's ugly.
Overweight doesn't always mean overeating you idiots. If she's happy what do you care about her weight, she's asked you for NOTHING. It's her life. BTW, I bet some of you talking aren't the picture of health yourself. She might live longer than you just because she's happy. What nasty little habit Annabelle? Name calling????? "THAT COW" sounds like something you've been called before.
Gabby in all her glory! I love it 🙂 Much better than looking at bobble-head models with blank expressions on their faces.
Do you think they're holding a twinkie above her head out of the shot?
I just don't see the beauty that others say they see. She is morbidly obese and it is disgusting to look at. I don't see beautiful there at all. I'm not saying it to be mean; it isn't about race. I'm african-american too. I don't understand why the media is so keen on promoting this girl. I saw her on Saturday Night Live and I didn't see anything that I would remotely call great. I agree with those who say that in a short time she will disappear from the spot light. If you are young and morbidly obese, illnesses, are definitely in your future. It takes time. That is not the same as someone who may not be that overweight and has illnesses. There is a genetic component. Michelle Obama has made childhood obesity a priority for the nation. The NFL has play60 which is meant to get kids moving. If this girl wants to be known for something great, then she needs to lose weight and show others who are in the same situation, that it can be done.
Gaby is a beautiful and intelligent young woman. If God wanted everyone to be a size two twig.....then even men would be size two twigs. Outside of Johnny Wier and Austen Scarlett.....not happening people. Yes, I like both guys....smart, talented, funny....not afraid of socieity. Yes!!!! This world needs more people like Gaby, Johnny and Austen.
Cass Elliot died of a heart attack. She did not choke to death...urban legend. Try reading the British medical inquiry (report) regarding her death. Plus, her family confirmed the heart attack. Yes, every skinny people die of heart attacks at 32...not just ful lfigure women.
Remember, Karen Capenter died of a heart attack at 33....due to self-induced vomiting in an effort to be thin.
So, stop judging and accept people as they are......thin, fat, tall, short, gay, straight, just maybe society would be a kinder place to exist.
I'll tell you why she's on a cover of a FASHION magazine.. ATTENTION..and damn are they getting it, from all the idiots buying it, amused by it, astounded by it, and squeemish by it.. and hell EVEN I lowered my IQ over 100 points to post a response on this silly a** forum.. arent there MORE important news worthy things to talk about.. instead of some overweight woman, who got her 15 min of fame via an oscar nomination.. and truly needs just as MUCH if not MORE help then the skinny boney anorexic bulemic drug addicted equally low self esteemed women put on these magazine covers !! I hope she gets the help she needs and hopefully WANTS FOR HERSELF... hopefully if she's as talented as so many people think, she'll be smart enough to make healthy choices and not end up as a statistic or folly for people with nothing better to do, then to post on forums showing their own lack of intelligence & self esteem by the stupidity, jealousness and shallowness of their comments...
OMG my IQ just dropped another 25 points.. what was my name again?
wow her arm takes up 1/4th of the magazine cover.
FOOD IS KILLING PEOPLE, OBESITY IS NOT BEAUTIFUL....IT IS A ILLINESS. IT IS DEADLY...AND I AM SURE
GABOUREY WILL SOON DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. SHE HAS ENOUGHT MONEY TO EVEN GET A TRAINER
TO ASSIST HER. THIS IS SERIOUS AMERICA OBESITY IS A ILLINESS AND IT IS KILLING SO MANY PEOPLE.
A PERSON CAN IS BEAUTIFUL, OUTSIDE AND INSIDE...REGARDLESS OF THEIR WEIGHT. WHEN YOU HAVE
A ILLINESS THAT IS GOING TO KILL YOU, YOU DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.
FACT: GABOUREY SIDIBE IS A VERY GOOD ACTRESS.....AND SHE IS A CUTE YOUNG LADY.
OBESITY CAN KILL HER. NOW SHE MENTIONED ON HER 21 BIRTHDAY, SHE HAD DRINKS
AND WHEN TO A STRIP CLUB. IF SHE CAN DO THIS, SHE CAN GO AN GET THE NEEDED
HELP TO LOSE WEIGHT. A REAL FRIEND WILL SAY, GABOUREY I LOVE YOU, AND I WANT YOU
TO BE AROUND FOR A LONG TIME. HOW CAN I HELP YOU LOOSE WEIGHT? HOW CAN I
O putting a FAT BLACK chick on the cover is just going to sell to the lowest common denominator... sell that is just it now how many more BLACKS will go out and purchase the magazine because they see another FAT BLACK chick like them on the cover, appeal to a healthier lifestyle "sista"
Accepting yourself is one thing improving yourself is better- being the best not settling for being overweight, working at being a reasonable size and healthy is leading by example.
She is happy with herself and doesn't give a damn what anyone else thinks. If she wants to lose weight, it should be for her health and not because of what haters think. I am overweight but my daughter is skinny and she has health problems too.
The fat fear mongers are practically praying this woman drops dead of a heart attack tomorrow so we can keep buying the idea that obesity is imminently killing us all so we better go vegan, get a gym membership or whatever right now. I certainly don't advocate being obese for a myriad of reasons but to suggest this woman hide her head in shame for fear that she may normalize what already occurs in nature is ridiculous. Truth is, fat should not be feared, that creates eating disorders. It should be dealt with in a way that people are healthy. And I would not be surprised if she were NOT diabetic, NOT hypertensive, NOT high in cholesterol... just FAT and perhaps some lower back and joint issues but nothing fatal. Let it go, folks, she's here to stay, her fat... is up to her.
Putting aside the issues listed by previous commenters., the fact of the matter is that ELLE is a FASHION magazine, not entertainment publication. Like it or not, fashion is about style and beauty, both of which, unfortunately, Ms. Sidibe lacks (and ELLE stylists and photographers made no attempt to provide). Yes, she has a friendly smile, and is attactive. Yes, she is a good actress, but no, she is not an appropriate cover model for a FASHION magazine.
She is a tragedy. She is rationalizing about her weight, making a joke of it. The media should stop praising "curvy" people. That only makes it sound acceptable and normal. Whatever happened to the word "gluttony"? Why is it never used in discussing obesity and its cause? Elle and the others who are glorifying her only reinforce her behavior. They are using her.
Honest and happiness are the survival tools to your life and keep your chin up. Embrace them, accept them, move on and smile!
Maybe this girl is happy with herself! Why should she give a damn about what any of you have to say! Just shut the hell up and let her live her life. While you all sit here and bash her, she is doing more then many of you ever will. You're sitting behind a monitor and she's on the cover of a major magazine. This says enough.
She is definitely Big Drawls McGraw style, but more power to her. What is she supposed to do, go in a basement and hide because she's overweight? You gotta play the hand you're dealt, you can't wish for someone else's.
For those of you saying she's not happy ... perhaps YOU aren't happy with a bigger woman making it in the business but she is doing exactly what she wants to do. Are you? Sad part is people like you aren't happy with plus size women and you aren't happy with the skinny little waif women either. This is why you are where you are ... which is just looking at them on the other side of their success.
Everybody is special is special in some kind of way. its so wonderful to see that our magazines can feature nice big, beautiful women on their front page of their magazine.
Wow. lots of self indulgent praises and lots of name calling. this nation isnt ready to embrace a healthy lifestlye. Americans are very immature-bullying on one side and whining on the other will keep you all obese and unhappy! You should support a government that doesnt allow fast food, then this blog would be about planting trees or saving dolphins.
If Elle wanted to make a point, they might have remained consistent to their past and given a "plus-sized" white woman the cover. Obesity, even morbid obesity, is a real problem in the Black community. Gaby is celebrated now, but will she see the age of 40? (John Candy and Chris Farley were funny, talented, and successful. And they are gone.) I love Gaby's charm but her size frightens me. As she is, she is a throwback to an old stereotype and no role model at all.
Some of you need to diet. others of you need anger management. a few of you need to be sent to detention for name calling (grow up!). Do you really think one stupid cover means anything? It certainly doesnt make someone a role model.
Good for Gabby. The only thing i find ironic are some of the comments here. It's beyond me why people feel the need to bash skinny girls so to bolster up the beauty of a big woman, and yet get upset when people bash big women for being too big. Stop being hypocritical. All women are beautiful regardless of their weight, size, color, etc. If everyone in this world were the same height, size, and weight what a boring place we'd be living in. But I guess people have to have something to pick somebody on....you are either too big, too small, too skinny, not skinny enough, not "real" enough, etc. Nobody is ever satisfied, eh?
I'm so glad she's on the cover of Elle. I'll never feel fat again.
I think she's a wonderful actress, with a bright future. Her habits and lifestyle will change when she is ready. The choices for her life are hers just as the choices for your life are yours. I just absolutely HATE the wigs and weaves they use on her! Sheesh, can somebody call Oprah's hair stylist!
I have never seen an overweight white actress on the cover of Elle, Vogue or any other magazine. They deliberately portray black women in this manner and refuse to put any beautiful ones on their covers.
stop referring to this girl as "plus sized", shes morbidly obese. you can big big and beatiful or whatever but you have to draw the line somewhere my god
I like the cut of your jib. She's as fat as they come.
I c ppl continue 2 b ignorant in their way of thinking & understanding. Elle is not focused on her weight. it's her career & progress dummies. every1 has an opinion, however, it appears that most of u are using this mag cover as a reason 2 talk about an over weight person & express your ignorance. If GS was small noone would b commenting on her size ud b praising her skills. so many girls & women r starving themselves because the ignorant says ur nothing if u r not thin. & beauty is thin. IT'S ALL BULL$*!+ GO GABBY DON'T LOOK BACK!
Well, those ladies chosen are all different. GS is just an obvious rep of several categories that we label as different. If u were to walk in a high school right now, these girls would be what ud see. Variety! This is a job for all involved and the risk with this industry is public scrutiny, GS has done a good job and I adore her image! Stay optimistic* everyone will not ever look the same daa...haters its just reality and variety is IN. Especially in this economy, in order to actually sell or make a profit, acknowledging and targeting different demographics is key. I think its good bc hiding those not statistically average is unethical. Stats are just for reference look into the data before u determine what's set in stone.
Lol what a load of politically correct garbage. All of this is like If they put Jonah Hill on GQ and everyone kept saying how handsome he was. How stupid.
Nice that they are not all super skinny because that isn't good for you, but neither is being morbidly obese... this isn't ok and the morbidly obese know it and want to change. They can be great people but we don't need to condone their seditary lifestyles...
What difference does it make what size people are as long as they are productive, tax paying, law abiding citizens? What color a person is shouldn't matter either!!!! She is a person who is happy with who she. How many of us can say that about ourselves? If you noticed I included myself in that statement!
There's no way around it this giril is a a fat cow and the entertainment industry and the magazine is doing her no favors by glorifying it. She may be a great actress but she really needs a spot on The Biggest Loser. She is destined to die at an early age. All you overweight people defending her need to take the blinders off as well.
She is so fat her a$$ has its own zip code.
I feel so sorry 4 gabby! This is bs. Its ok 2 b a size 2 and unhealthy? People need 2 mind their own buisness. If ur not happy with urself fix u not others. And 2 the people that think all fat people eat 30 bugers u need help. Parents need 2 b their kids role modles not stars!
Ok, first off, regardless of what u think about someone u see in the media or in movies, unless u know them personally and they have affected u personally, u can't judge! All I can say is...What u put out, u get back & while ur trying to knock someone, ur really knocking YOURSELF!! Put that energy into changing ur own life & being successful not into someone who u will probably never meet or even know!! Don't be jealous when someone is doing their thing and unaffected by people who have NO lives!! Gabi, Congrats on ur success, I hope ur determination and confidence will influence others to go for their dreams in spite of who they are, what they look like, or where they've been cuz its about where ur going in the end!!! And also, childrens role models should come first from home and their schools! Don't base ur childrens destiny on anyone u don't know & more than likely aren't thinking about ur children anyway!! Do what works for u people & leave the rest with the man upstairs!!
I CANT BELIEVE I read all these Comments...Some of U are Destined To Be Forgotten...GS SHOULD LOOSE WEIGHT, but I salute her in Hiding the Fact That she is Uncomfortable..I have not Mastered that Yet, Im A Chub 2.
Gabourey Sidibe makes every New Yorker, black and white, big and small ,very very proud. Keep kickin' it G!
i'd like to see the child lose some weight her face is so full you cant see what she looks like. I think we wouldnt even know who she was if she lost a bunch of weight. and the health issue. like to see he live longer
I say go for it. Not everyone is a size 6. I love it how being a full figured woman now starts at size 12. Ah, people; 12 is not full figured. The average woman in America is about a size 14-16. Okay, that being stated. I can get on to my comment.
If this woman loves herself, what is the big deal. It is very apparent to me that she does love herself. That shows when anyone talks to her. She is quite confident in what she is doing. She didn't let the sterotypical machine try to turn her into something she isn't. If Ms. Gabby feels the need to lose weight she will do so, but it will be on her terms.
I think it's great that Hollywood is accepting who she is and dealing with it.
As for Jill Scott. Oh, I do love her. I agree that there have been many other fuller figured gals in the mainstream; but the public seems to be fascinated with Gabbie. So, you go on with your bad self.
she act like she feels this way . she still doesn't want to be that big , tells me that shes not as together that she says , she knows how bad this is for her health , not so meny acting jobs that want that heavy of an actress. her mother is a plus size woman but not like her daughter, shes not as heavy and you can see a pretty face. she looks like her mom but you cant tell right now
It's crazy how people get mad at the one obese girl that's on the cover, but OK with all the anorexics of the past gracing the cover. Yes, Gabby should lose weight, but that does that mean she can't work and get recognized for it?
She is being used because of her extreme obesity. If she was just "normally" obese, she would not get this attention.
All the ones calling her beautiful are.... women. Surprise, surprise!
I find all of you pathetic and shallow and without any lives of your own. 3000 people died 9 years ago today because of terrorists, not because of their weight. Love your shallow lives.
Well, i love big girls and i would love to ....rarrrrrrrrrrr.......... i think she is very cute and i like her a lot!. As about Amanda on the other cover...wow..she looks very hot for a skinny girl
I used to have low self esteem about my self now ibhave learned to love ..myself no one is gonna love u like u....
We are always dealing with such extremes in this society. Miss Sidibe is not a representative of average and somewhat overweight people she appears to be morbidly obese. Yes, she has confidence despite the criticism sent her way but she seems to be overcompensating by stating how pretty she thinks she is– which is always in bad taste no matter what size you are– people who think kindly of her overlook this because we feel sorry for her because of her weight. I've seen her interviewed in person and she played most of her comments for laughs by continually bragging about her supposed good looks. People talk about her as though she has so much substance but she seemed really silly and immature. She has come of age in the talk show era where if you overcome an addiction or outlive and surpass school bullies you are some sort of hero. She recently stated in an interview that if yoga were a person she would stab it and that one shouldn't have to suffer to be thin or pretty. Extremes again– yoga is a mind and body practice not known for causing pain. Its probably one of the best holistic ways to deal with weight. There's a big difference between extreme dieting and exercising and moderate exercising and a gentle practice like yoga–and this girl's supposed to be educated.
If she was an obese white girl Elle would never be interested – Obese women do not belong on fashion magazine covers. A story on her would be more appropriate in Good Housekeeping.
ok JOE JONES, cut the "racist" c*ap. First of all her skin is "lighter" because of the lighting from the photo shoot. second of all who cares if they lighten or darken her skin color. Do you realize all magazines are photoshopped? Thirdly would you look at an image of a women with a spray tan and say "omg what are they thinking darkening her skin like that? So sick of folks playing race card when it is really not necessary!
This very talented young woman is beautiful, spirited and full of life! I don't believe featuring a large sized female is glorifying obesity or encouraging/ignoring potential health concerns precipitated by excess weight. It's just a lovely photo of a very engaging young person. And she represents more of the norma than the rail thin models usually featured.
Good Lord, she is just BIG. I know she is beautiful on the inside but she could certainly be a role model for those who are over weight by losing weight to have a healthy life and to show others THE CAN DO IT! Not a flattering picture for her. Does she have a low hair line too? looks like it....
Lmao Too Funny Truly Entertaining Funniest Of All Swerved To Avoid And Ran Out Of Gas Now Seriously Obesity No Laughing Matter Im A Formerfatso 275 Now 180 Still Losing Feel Better Than Ever It Is Hard But Instead Of Criticizing This is Young Lady Lets All Whisper A Prayer For Not Only Her But 4 Each Other Now Im Off 2 Walmart 2c This Cover
Don't usually read blogs but this turned into a train wreck. Truth be told nobody really cares about her or Elle. The fatties and the skinnies all make good points. As a skinny/average, it's her life and health, not my business.Don't buy the magazine and don't defend morbid obesity or call her names. Maybe if the same energy was directed toward the fact that a child dies from starvation every 6 seconds, the skinnies can have a bake sale for the fatties and send the $$s to a charity. Now we can all be happy.
Don't usually read blogs but this was like some weird reality show. Truth be told nobody really cares about her or Elle. The fatties and the skinnies all make good points. As a skinny/average it's her life and health, not my business. Maybe if the same energy was directed toward the fact that a child dies from starvation every 6 seconds, the skinnies can have a bake sale for the fatties and send the $$s to a charity. I'm willing to bet she will be on celebrity fit club with all the other D list stars within 5 years. I'm plus size as well but I'm working on it. GS is disgusting looking. And this is coming from a fat chick.... If your face looks like it's been stung by 1000 bees then it's time to put down the crock of butter and lose some weight. Fat isn't pretty. It's not healthy and it should not be glorified.
She is a woman, an actess, a fellow human being. Like all of us, she has strengths and weaknesses, hopes and dreams, fears and anquishes. She is living her life and making the best of her opportunities. Those that follow the creed of judging a book by its cover are unqualified to comment on her "health." You do not have a basis for your ridiculous theories. She does NOT have to conform to anyone's idea of an appropriate appearance. She does NOT have to explain her medical history or her choices to any of you. She does not have to ask your permission to be happy. And "you" do not have the right to question the choices she makes for herself. You only have the right to question the choices you make for YOURSELF. As for me, I choose to smile at this lovely picture of a woman who has grabbed life by the horns and chosen to share her happiness with anyone who wants a glimpse!
Thou should not JUDGE. To all of you that are being so hateful. Let me guess everyone in your family is thin and beautiful! Just rememeber if you don't already have children you may some day and someone could talk about your child. Will it be funny then?
here's another ? should she hav declind2b on elles covr because of her looks($$$$) don't u under stand someone sees her & kno's I'm something I can getup dispite my size or how I'm percived because there told by people theyre not good enough the world beat them down cause there diffrent then they take there hypicritical azzez 2 church or the P.T.A rasin the leadrs of 2morrow I'm sure the good lords SOO PROUD.
I swerved to avoid Gabi and ran out if gas.
kno 1s sayn were kool w/ovr weight people I'm sure its hardest 4 them ,2call some1 ugly disqusting or any other name not possitive r upliftn really sho's ur insecurities n the end we stand n judgement as individuals not as lik minded people wholl laugh w/u then? WHEN will good&bad right&wrong ever matter over money, hate ,greed......
U go Gabourey Cinnabun! Congrats! Luv u!
Hrrmm... I bet any amount of money that if some new celebrity who was skinny sprang up, created a fantastic movie, and all the while confirmed she was anorexic and proud, that there was nothing wrong with her because she liked "who she was", the criticism would be enormous, and NO ONE would be making statements like "You Go Girl!", "She's a role model for all the other anorexic girls!!".
Not saying ALL skinny people are anorexic, but you have got to be delusional if you think this girl could possibly be healthy. It's one thing to have a little more meat on your bones, maybe be "chubby", but this girl is obese. Self-esteem should come from being healthy, not giving the finger to people who try to show you that you really aren't.
i can't help myself but she takes up almost all of the cover. lets stop praising obesity people, yeah she's big and she's on the cover that's great but it's not healthy!! lose weight pleaseeee
I'm fat. So, I should be offended by Loads911, but those comments are too funny!!!!
Didn't she play the clueless teenager in "Southland" who had to go into witness protection but called her boyfriend who ratted her location out to the killers trying to find and kill her? Whoever that was, she was good, very real.
Gabourey Sidibe is just another word for : "LANDFILL" Just a human being using her body as a "landfill". A "Dump".
When I see pictures of her, I think of a "Landfill". A landfill, also known as a dump or rubbish dump, is a site for the disposal of waste materials by burial and is the oldest form of waste treatment. Historically, landfills have been the most common methods of organized waste disposal and remain so in many places around the world.
Gabourey is a another Landfill, that travels.
Sorry folks, but I look at fashion to see nice things, not some fat unhealty ugly thing who cannot open her eyes due to her huge cheeks pressing them closed. Yes of corse she is happy, she can finally afford the big ole bucket of fried chicken she so desires. Gross, gross gross. Why promote being fat and nasty. Ewwww
Cass Elliot died at 32 years old. (Of the Mama's and Papa's) Seriously over weight. Elliot died choking on a ham sandwich. The police noted that a partly eaten sandwich had been found in her room and that she choked while eating it.
Same thing is going to happen to this Elephant named: Gabby. "if" she doesn't do something about her seriously over weight. In the photo of her, Gabby, as she leans back her head, you can almost "see" a huge bag of M*M's going into her mouth. On average, obesity reduces life expectancy by six to seven years: a BMI of 30–35 reduces life expectancy by two to four years, while severe obesity (BMI > 40) reduces life expectancy by 10 years. Science is behind these findings. Someone should say: Hey! Look! There is STILL an elephant in the room. And stop trying to ignore it. Gabby is an Elephant. Plain and simple. And the magazine "Elle" is doing her a great huge injustice, by promoting her obesity, in print.
She actually died of a heart attack. Her obesity played a part, I'm sure, but she was also a heavy drinker and drug user.
No matter how tallented Gabi is, she's obese, there's nothing to be proud of and support. I'm not saying she was a bad choice for the cover. I don't care who they airbrush but saying that finally the're showing a real woman is a lie. She will die within the next 10-20 years if she keeps being so much overweight. Do not promote obesity or anorexia!!
there's nothing wrong with being successful whatever size you are. But I think the point a lot of people are making is like it or not SOME kids are considering her a role model. It's been a while since she's been in precious, if she were serious about losing weight, which I don't think she is, she would have hired a trainer and lost some of it by now. You can love your self to the grave by overeating, if that's what she wants and you as fans want, looks like y ou're going to get your wish. On the other hand, NO ONE can say that that much weight is healthy. She might not be feeling it as much now because she is relatively young, but in a few years and MORE weight added, it will become a tremendous problem for her. Losing weight is never easy, but I do hope she has people who are lovingly trying to steer her into that direction. I would hate to think that people are over-looking the problem to make her feel good; she might not consider that losing weight is important if that's all she gets. I don't expect her to be a stick, but there is a heck of a lot between being a stick and what she is now, SUPER obese.
I don't understand why some of you are calling her beautiful. Look at her face, her hair, her fat, she is disgusting. I couldn't even sit through the movie because it was so uncomfortable to watch her. She is delusional. I am glad that Elle put Megan Fox and the others on covers, there is no way this whale can carry a cover.
The part that really upsets me is this huge woman is projecting that she thinks she's beautiful, when in reality she spends most of her time at home shoving twinkies in her mouth and crying that she is fat and unattractive. I have seen some larger women who have attractive faces, but this poor girl has nothing going for here -not her face, not her body or anything else for that matter.
GREAT to see Gabourey on the Elle cover!! I think she is such a bright light, and an intelligent beautiful woman with amazing talent. I am proud to see your career blossom. For all of the chatter and cruel jokes regarding weight and health, we should not be taking other people's inventory. None of us are perfect or 'better than' and we should just celebrate when good things happen to a fellow sister. I support you Gabby!!! Much love from San Diego! I am addicted to The Big C and LOVE your character! XO
I am ashamed of the vast majority of individuals who came online to tear down someone because of weight issues. while this young lady needs to lose weight, it is clearly not that easy to do. most of you need to shut the f!@k up and sit on it. you make me sick!
its a shame n 2010 people r still so hatefull but its good2 kno there r perfect people n the world "attention" there not, what cover have u GRACED get a life GABBY has 1 ur unhappy w/ur selves HATERS.......
Gabourey is a liberal stooge. In five years, nobody will remember her.
Where are all the posts slamming stars for smoking or doing drugs?
None of you, I stress NONE OF YOU have any right to pass judgement on anyone whether fat, skinny, light bright, or darkest dark! Take a long, strong good look in the mirror! Start w/ yourself w/ negative criticism!
I love it! I love her and I love that they put her on one of the covers.
A: The women who eat right and exercise are on all the other magazines such as Health, Women's Health, Cosmo, Glamour, etc. Yes, we all know there is an obesity epidemic. You don't have to preach it. The media does enough of that. Maybe Elle decided to showcase Gabourey because she is talented and young. Maybe their decision had nothing to do with weight.
Its not evryday that elle has women of bigger size on their cover so i doubt they are trying to promote obesity. i enjoy gabourey sense of humor in interviews though i havent seen her act. She may benefit from exercise and a healthier menu. but what is the average life expectancy for her height and weight? Some people like jenn hudson looked better to me with a little extra weight though gabourey seems like she may look even better with some weight loss since she has a pretty face already
I find that people find identify through the stars unfortunately. They put them on such a pedestal that we forget the 6.49 billion of americans that live in the real world and not fantasy land and realize that people come in all shapes and sizes. However, I believe that her obesity is a welcome change from the skinny pasty looking stars that we see today. She fits into the almost normal and it should be a reflection on what we need to work on as a people whether skinny or obese. In the meantime Gaby, do you in the here and now and if you decide to lose weight for health reasons, do you then as well.
I think its ridiculous how you people attack Gabby because society has mis-led you on what a beautiful person looks like. Maybe you all should focus yourself vs focusing on the false images that has been presented to you by the society that has pretty much ruined our world. Worry about your health. You should worry about how much time it took you to post that negative post. With those 3-5 minutes you could of planted a tree. People we have got to get better.
Gabby has more talent in one of her toes than HALF of Hollywood~Her size should not define who she is or how far she can go. For far too long Hollywood has had a "certain look" and regardless of the talent or quality of the actresses casting was done based on marketability. It's sad and as a African American woman, plus size at that I admire Gabby for her beauty, poise and grace....I have confidence, high self esteem and so does she and her continued success is riding on her acting ability and NOT her weight. She's a star in my eyes so keep the negativity to yourselves she has ENOUGH on her plate(pun intended) xoxo
'NEED TO LOOSE WEIGHT FAST, FOR HEALTH REASONS" SHE IS ABLE TO GET THE NEEDED HELP.
I am all for acceptance of bigger bodies in magazines. But of course, the media biz can only illustrate extremes – HUGE or Skini & BONES. There is a middle ground – normal perhaps? I think Gabby is an attractive enough person. However, I think Elle did her a disservice with the cover. With all their photogs, computer abilities, they took a LOUSY picture. How about seeing her EYES? The "portal to the soul"? The made her look like a blob in a green dress. NOT GOOD WORK-I've seen good pics of her...no EXCUSE ELLE – just didint' care to do a good pic b/c she was heavy?
Let me guess, all of you haters are a size 2. How ignorant you sound. You don't know anything about her yet choose to judge her. She looks happy and beautiful. Can you say the same about yourselves?
You reap what you sow [whether positive or negative].
HAVE YOU HAD A XOWii energy drink today??? http://www.xowii.com
All of you haters need to remember that when magazines put men of power on covers of magazines, you never know what secrets lie beneath the $2,000 suit and the Colgate smile. This girl is a beacon of hope for women who look at magazine covers and hate themselves because they feel they will never attain the image of beauty that the fashion industry has deemed 'appropriate'. So much better to encourage anorexia in order to be the perfect size 2, instead of accepting people the way they are.
In response to earlier: That's what I thought! So, you can all be trolls over CNN, but you can't email me and tell me I'm fat? What a bunch of shallow idiots!
Truly sad to read all the negative comments. GS may be over weight and yes, there are health risks but really, do people have to be so rude? I'm glad to see a woman of her size being given a chance to shine! Congrats G!!
Yes, there is a problem with obesity in the United States. I believe the point to this cover is that she's a talented woman regardless of her size. I don't believe the intent was to promote obesity. She's overweight and I'm sure her doctor has told her she needs to lose some of the excess. Lay off her. As far as the comment about her being a "real" woman. Whether skinny or chunky or whatever, we are all real women. It just happens that the "normal" woman is around a size 10. For those that are super skinny, good for you. For those that aren't, that's okay. What matters is that we do our best to stay active and healthy.
So why not put a size 10 on Elle? Or heck even 12 or 14, heck even 18! But Sidibe is twice that. It's not healthy, it's not attractive. She's lovely on the inside but a horrible example on the outside.
I must say though the person who says they're now 110 @ 5'6....that doesn't sound healthy either. One extreme isn't better than another.
I am overwhelmed by the emotional content displayed in comments regarding this obviously gifted actress. She has the ability to command our attention. Love her, or hate her, she steals the spotlight. Try expressing your passionate opinions onstage, or on film, or in an audition for any role. Break a leg.
That cover would have to be a special fold out one for them to fit her fat a** on it properly. Leave it to America to put a woman who could easily be the poster child for obesity/diabetes on the cover of a fashion magazine.....what a joke
Sorry, I don't get it. Just way too big and for her own good.
What is WRONG with you people?! Do we really live in a world that is incapable of seeing how beautiful this woman is just because she doesn't conform to what you all perceive as "normal"? Personally, I'm more offended that no one is talking about what a waste of space Lauren Conrad is!
Nina – cosign on both of your points.
@jen and guest you two are the meanest, most miserabe people to say such horrible things about people you don't know. I'm shocked and feel sorry for the both of you. May GOD help you both smh
When will people stop praising bad behavior? Sodomy is now seen as trendy... Now obesity is seen as courageous. That girl needs help. Obesity is still dangerous. No matter how much politically correct magazine covers that's out there, obese people need a wake up call. Gabourey needs to focus on her health and lay off those cheeseburgers and deep fried food.
She's got the money now to eat healthy, I hope she takes advantage of that.
This is sad... GABUREY IS A SODOMIST ?
To the person who weighed 376 and is now 350...wow- a whole 26 pounds. That would be admirable if you were, say,a bit overweight. But you're not. You're considered morbidly obese. And studies show, fat people have a shorter life expectancy than a healthy person. That's what people mean by she's gonna die....by the fact that she doesn't control what she puts in her mouth. Why she thinks she needs to eat 30 cheeseburgers a day is beyond me....
Any weight lose is better than none.
Thank you T!!
I'm going to say something to Jen she didn't say to me. CONGRATS on your 70lbs weight loss. I'm 26lbs down and on my way to loosing 70lbs...and MORE!!!!
@Jen.....one word "shallow". You seriously need some help in empathy if you feel the need to judge and belittle people b/c of their weight. Don't you think over-weight people know that they are over-weight. The last thing they need is someone who think they know all, telling them what they already know. IF you were a size 18, you should already know this. Just remember these people have feelings and are more than what the scales say. I would rather have 1 loving over-weight freind than 10 shallow 110 lb know it alls 🙁 You're a really sad person!
I find it very interesting that people are going on about Elle "promoting" obesity because of this cover....does that mean when the cover normally shows an "unhealthy" too thin actress they are promoting anorexia? I thought the covers were to showcase successful show biz people. Also to the bloggers who use words like "sick" , "pig, "disgusting"....no matter what your physical size or shape, you will always be considered "ugly" because of your nasty beliefs and opinions. A person's physical attributes can change (such as losing weight)...but you ignorance, shallowness and immaturity will haunt you for the rest of your lives.
She is seriously gross. She is lying through her teeth about being comfortable with herself... and really?... Quit picking on skinny people. People pick on skinny people when they're jealous...and to the plus sized people that are getting offended-stop. You're just feeling bad because you know you need to go on a diet.its your fault you're chunky or plus sized. Don't play the victim. Pudge and chub is gross and sick. I used to be 5'6",a size 18 and 180 pounds...then I did something about it. Now I'm 110 pounds and a size 2....
Didn't anyone ever tell you Jen, Bulimia is not a diet.
There are so many so called skinny models and actresses who have not made it like Gabby. Being thin and beautiful alone is not going to make it anymore to make it big in hollywood. They are looking for something much more deeper in a person. Stop hating because an obese black woman made it. Black women who are overweight such as Oprah, Monique, Gabby, Queen Latifah have proven you don't have to be a size 2 to make it.
@Jen- its odd of all the stupid things people have said on this board I choose to comment on you. Well here ya are Jen:
you are a d0uch3 nozzle. plain and simple. The things you say are vapid and hate-fueled. As a former fatty (and future by the amount of negativity you spew and consume apparently) you should know better. You are an embarrassment to the human race. Kindly go start your car in the garage and close yourself in you shallow cow.
I am 29yrs old, weighed 376lbs [now 350lbs], and I have no health ailments...ONLY BY GOD'S GRACE!!!! I have friends who are a few years younger than me, the same age as me, or a couple of years older than me and have health problems, i.e.: diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. Many are shocked that I have a clean bill of health. People are talking about her coloring and weight; why can’t we just be HAPPY for the girl!! No, I don’t know her personally, but you should always be happy for someone if something positive happens to them!! No one is appalled, shocked, or astonished that the other skinny ladies are on the cover; so, why should it matter if Gabourey is on the cover of Elle.
Someone commented that she’s going to die, if she doesn’t loose weight. FYI to that person, WE’RE ALL GOING TO DIE!! Who said she’s the epitome of being healthy. No one speaks up when the photographers [or whomever] are airbrushing the models to make their skin clearer or waist smaller…that’s an issue!!
Let her loose weight, when she’s ready!!!! That’s what I did!!
OMG....she's FAT !! We MUST HATE her !! Fat people are the destruction of the world....seriously...get a life people
For those of you, 'concerned' about her health, why not use that SAME energy, to support the fight against obesity, instead of TRYING to tear anyone down with it? Waist size does not determine who goes before who. NONE of us, are promised that next breath, eating a burger, or spinach leaf.
Wow. The cover is too small to contain her. Thank god it's not 3-d.
Seriously Racists.....and HATERS.... This girl is talented! Why does she deserve any less reason to be on the Cover of Elle than any other SKINNY WHITE GIRL!!!!! Race is so not important!!!! Elle is giving credit to her talent! You all obviously have not seen the movie "Precious!" If you have, you obviously dont have a CLUE!!!!! Get a clue!!!!
Bebeangel, Mama Cass did NOT die from choking on a ham sandwich–she died from a heart attack. There was a half-eaten sandwich on the nightstand, noted in the police report, which is probably how the rumor got started. Cass's daughter has gone on record dispelling that myth.
If Gabrielle were a man, no one would bat an eye at her size. If she were a skinny supermodel who was addicted to cocaine no one would comment on her health. Get over it. You people have problems.
For u dummies who are obsessed with the size of this girl...ur freakin idiots. Just because a person is thin does not make them thin or beautiful...I wonder what all u self hating a'holes look like...there is nothing wrong with loving urself no matter how u look..someone should do a study of how many runners and supposidly healthy thin people die of heart attacks each year..u would be suprised..I am happy for the girl and wish her much sucess
This is probably the best post on here. Kudos.
Dido. I'm so sick of shallow STUPID people. No one seems to get it. This isn't about fat, skinny, diabetes, etc. It's about a happy obviously well adjusted person trying to succeed in life. People need to be less judgmental and more positive and supportive of others.
I have to disagree with part of your statement. Just because you are thin, it does make you... thin. Just saying.
She is a heart attack waiting to happen....so sad
As, a plus sized person, myself I'm outraged at these negative comments! My email address is Arielleashellej@yahoo.com.I dare one of you mean malicious people to email me and tell me I'm fat. I DARE you.
Let 'em have it, Arielle!
Hellman is on my nerves talkin bout Gabby. I wish u all would stop talkin about her. Yes the girl big but dang she doing the damn thing haters
You're right. I'm sorry. Gabby should have ate you last night for dinner. Besides, Gabby should come put with her own lines of Mu Mu's at QVC.
I think she's disgusting and I don't understand the need to pretend she's not. When the magazines put anorexic models on their covers people are outraged but when the put this obese mess on the cover everyone cheers because it makes them feel thinner. Its sickening!
This is ridiculous. She is a poster child for pre-diabetic children. They criticize runway models for being too skinny but Sidibe is the worse choice as an example of health for anyone.
I agree. I guess if ELLE'S goal was to get my attention away from all the gorgeous models on the covers of all the magazines there for me to look at while I'm waiting to be rung up at the grocery store, they succeeded. But there ain't nothing about that cover that makes me want to buy the magazine for all the reasons you stated and then some.
As a big guy, myself, it's nice to see a BWW making it in the entertainment industry. You go, Gabi! Beautiful and talented!
Everyone who is hating on her because of her size needs to get some self-esteem themselves. Sickening.
They renamed this edition: cowbELLE
Just cuz shes really a mean person.
well played sir!
Home girl needs to pull a Star Jones...fast. or else her and the fattie on Glee will be fighting for the starring role in The Blindside 2.
Ugh. I don't know what's worse–the fact that this country is so obsessed with 'being fine with whatever body you have' (fat), or convincing this poor girl that her being morbidly obese is fantastic and cover-worthy.
This is not a flattering picture.
She is a pretty (yes) and talented girl but her weight is unhealthy, I don't care how 'ok' she is with it. To pretend otherwise sends the wrong message. Be positive, yes, but be realistic. She is NOT healthy at that weight.
If they needed a representation of a fabulous actress of size then why not someone like Jill Scott, the girl on Glee, or that actress on the World's Dumbest? This chick is not cute or Elle worthy. And that wig is ridiculous. There are plenty of big beautiful women that would have put that cover on fire. But they chose this as some sort of representation. No Thank You!
She has a pretty smile and a great sense of humor. I always enjoy reading her interviews.
I don't understand all the interest in GS. Granted, her role in Precious was a harsh one, but she is not a great actress by any measure. she's terrible in The Big C. I have to assume that it's a sort of condescending thing - like she's so great for doing this when she's such a large woman. I find that offensive and demeaning.
Which of the 4 covers will be the most popular on the news stands? I doubt it will be this one.
You are right about that. If I'm an advertiser in this issue, I just lost untold eyeballs since this issue will stay on the newsstand shelf. Elle has more newsstand purchasers than subscribers. This would be the equivalent of
Architectural Digest featuring a double-wide mobile home on their cover.
@Loads911.....aren't you just too funny.....NOT!!! Grow up! Your comments sound like something a 14 yr old would say (sorry to the 14 year olds who have more sense than this moron)!!
I think it is completely unacceptable for Elle and other media outlets to promote this type of obesity. They are making it seem like it is acceptable to be unhealthy and not give a d*mn about it. With the obesity epidemic already prevalent in this country, the last thing we need is obese, unhealthy role models. Obesity is linked to so many health problems that it is irresponsible to promote it as an acceptable lifestyle. I think there should be women of different shapes and sizes on magazine covers, but I think they all need to be healthy – neither obese women nor anorexic women should be on magazine covers. Where are all the healthy women who eat right and exercise?
I agree that we need realistic body types on magizine covers but let's not fool ourselves into thinking the stick thin models are any healthier due to their size. Health and size are most times related and there are times they are not. I don't think its any healthier showcasing folks with drug and alcohol issues but they still do. So why when it applies to size is it wrong. Also role models start at home-they shouldn't just be people your kids have never seen but on tv,sports, and movies.
"let's not fool ourselves into thinking the stick thin models are any healthier due to their size." Amen to that. At 108 pounds, I was still a size 12 because of my skeleton - pelvis/ribs/shoulders - not because there was an ounce of fat anywhere on me. At 150 pounds, I was *still* a size 12, and a lot healthier. But because I discovered as a calorie-burning athlete that I'll never be a size 0, it was never anything I strove to accomplish.
Gabourey is a great actress and a beautiful person, but she is going to die if she doesn't lose weight. Someone should intervene and save her. What a terrible loss it would be.
Howard Stern was pilloried for saying something cry close to that. But I agree that she needs to get the weight under control.
Well take that Vogue!!! Kudos to Elle and congrats Gabourey!!!
@Loads911 Get a life – seriously!!
He must have a good one with that sense of humor!
"Big things keep happening"? Really CNN? I'm afraid that there's too much of this fetishizing of the physical or the unusual going on here. Do we have to have pithy leads for all celebrities' physical differences? ("It's all Greek to Nia Vardalos." "You'd be blind not to like Marlee Matlin.") Please! Gabourey Sidibe is a serious actress, who by virtue of her physicality, can play parts other actresses will never be able to play, which opens up whole avenues for storytelling on film. Don't put her on the cover of Elle because she's fat. Put her on the cover of Elle because she's talented and BEAUTIFUL.
Gabby and Elle, I am so proud of you. It's about time magazines showed "REAL" beautiful women. It's too bad more large women don't exude the confidence level that you do. If that is really you, Dr. Phil, shame on you!!! You should be supportive and encouraging a young woman to feel good about who and what she is. Your comments are from the dark ages and should be ignored. People are missing the point here–a beautiful and confident woman who is self assured and happy with herself. More power to positive feedback in this very negative world. Elle, thank you for producing a beautiful cover.
CathyM – being morbidly obese doesn't make you a "real" woman any more than being anorexic prevents you from being a "real" woman. Having two X chromosomes makes you a real woman.
Hey mamamba, whyba doncha beba coolba bahumma.....
That is one STYLISH cover and I love her in her new Showtime hit "The Big C".......
Guest, OMG really!!!!! "I hope she has a heart attack soon"? You are pure evil. No matter what you may think of her obesity you should never ever wish ill upon someone, especially someone you don't even know. Would you like it if someone said they hoped one of your family members would have a heart attack? Seriously....you need counseling because clearly you are demented.
To Guest...may the very thing you wish to happen to Gabourey Sidibe not happen to you. It's so not obvious that you hate her because she's where you are NOT. Kudos to Gaby. SMOOCHES to Guest.
I'm happy that she is finding success in such a cynical world.
She will be forgotten in less than a year. How successful will she be then? Besides I hardly call her successful. She is living off the fame she got from the Oscar nomination but that will fade.
Talk about a cynical world, Guest is Exhibit A.
Doesn't anyone notice that they spraypainted her skin color to make he look more white? She's really dark and she almost looks white. Looks like racism has won again.
@ Joe I hadn't noticed, and I don't think anyone is going to mistake Gabby for a white woman. The only one out with the brown paper bag is you.
@Joe: I think you are confusing "racisim" w/ lighing effects at different angles. Not everything is about race and being racist...just fyi. I think this picture looks amazing and really captures her beautiful complexion!
"Spraypainted"? Ever heard of Photoshp, Joe? Skin tones, shadows, even the spacing of the facial features and length of the arms, legs, neck...are regularly altered for cover shots.
They probably sprayed painted her stretch marks. They had to pick a color in between.
Just can't leave it alone, can you! What difference does it make what color she is!
I am a dark skinned African American female and I take offense to your comment Joe Jones. When I am in a room with a lot of light the light brings out the red in my skin therefore I am lighter but if a room has reduced lighting I am darker. No one asked you for your brown bag theory. I can tell by your comments that you are not apart of the African American community because we all know about lighting. GET A LIFE DUDE!!!
Wanda? Really? You take yourself (and this photo shoot, which tomorrow will be forgotten and not mean anything) way too serious. 157 comments on a plus sized actress-THREE on the medal of honor story, zero on the two Pakistan stories...what you consider important today boggles my mind.
You know what? It's idiots like you that cry RACISM when none exists that adds to the problem. She is merely brightly lit.
You Joe are the reason that the real racists get their ammo from. "See, all they want to do is blame the white man!"
Yes, racism still exists, but people like you want it to be 40 years ago, when racism was rampant even in liberal areas.
Besides, you mouth breather, she still looks black. Using your limited observation skills, anyone who gets a tan is trying to be black, right?
U dummy, it's called lighting. I'm all for equality but this is a ridiculous use of the race card.
It was probably so you cant see those gross stretch marks on every inch of her.
I don’t believe in sugarcoating the dangers of obesity, but I think that this is a GREAT photo of Gabourey. I give Elle magazine a lot of credit for thinking outside of the box and showing that if a person’s heart and soul are beautiful, then that beauty will radiate on the outside (regardless of the dress size). Hopefully she will lose some weight, but it’s nothing wrong with loving yourself where you are – on the way to where you’re going. Good for her!
Amen. Beautifully stated!
I love this picture of her, but it really looks like they purposely took up the whole page to make her look bigger. Like a subliminal snub.
They had to think outside the box, as they couldn't find a box big enough to fit her...
I love her in "The Big C"! She is hilarious!
How about the Big Cholesterol?
U GO GURL! Gabby, im so proud of u. Let da hatas know just bcuz we're plus-sized, we still got it goin on. Strut ur stuff my sista! U make us(big and beautiful) sistas PROUD! I know i'm 'proud'.
This is bull. Someone like Jill Scott would have really done it.
I though Gabys sitcoms shouldve been "Big Love". Oh, well.
They could have at least not made her take up the entire cover, it's almost rubbing in the fact about her weight.
ITrue, please READ the article!! Jill Scott is not near the age of 25!!! Morons, all of you!
Quit playing the politically correct role. She can continuously say she's happy with the way she looks but there is NO WAY she could feel good about being a potential walking heart attack. She needs to stop promoting this farce. And anyone that is jumping on her bandwagon agreeing with her needs to cut the crap.
....sorry sista..................chucky monkeys DO NOT have it going on............the three other Elle covers totally ROCK.......Gabby's simply Rolls (if ya know what I Mean)......simply stating the aweful truth everyone thinks but few say.
