Taylor Swift gets split reaction from music stars

If you ask Nelly, Taylor Swift has validated his "cool," but if you ask Chris Robinson, she’s the personification of the faux music star.

In an interview with Billboard, Nelly responded to an admiring tweet from Swift. The 20 year-old country-pop music star took to Twitter last week with praise for the St. Louis rapper’s latest single, “Just a Dream.”

“I’m so in love with that new Nelly song,” Swift said about the newest offering from the 36 year-old, whose latest album "5.0" is slated for release in mid-November.

Despite the fact that Nelly has sold millions of records, has a successful fashion line and is still one of the most recognizable faces in the world of music (even if his last album has only sold 223,000 units), he said Swift's words of support were a definite confidence boost.

“My daughter was like, ‘OMG!’” Nelly said. “I’m only cool to her because I know Chris Brown and Bow Wow, and now Taylor tweeted about me.”

But Black Crowes frontman Chris Robinson isn’t so convinced that Swift has the talent to back up that star power. “I find it embarrassing that adults are like, ‘Taylor Swift is very talented.’ She's not," Robinson told Nylon Guys magazine. "She might be cute, but she's horrible."

Robinson went on to dub Swift as an example for an overall lack of artistic originality in today’s musical landscape. “They have stylists who dress them, they make records with producers who play a chord into the computer and it all comes out the same," he said. "There's no individuality."

  6. Yeah...

I would not count Taylor Swift among music's best singers. I also do not think she is bad. She does write her own music. Plays instruments and has through her own hard work become successful. Although I realize Chris Robinson has his own fans, he is at this point irrelevant and in a lot of people's opinions, washed up. When was his last hit? When was the last time his music mattered? At this point, he is using Taylor's name to bring his name into the spotlight. Otherwise, we wouldn't even be talking about Chris Robinson.

She writes her own songs. She sings her own songs in front of thousands of people without messing up too much or peeing her pants. She may not be much of a vocalist but in all her recordings she's almost always pitch-perfect.

I'm sure most of you whiners couldn't do that. I don't even like Taylor too much but, damn, she has style, grace and talent.

Just because she writes her own songs doesn't mean she has talent. Her "songwriting" consists of rearranging the words "heartbroken" and "boys" around the G cord over and over again. And just because she sings in front of people doesn't make her any better. Heidi Montag does that. And of course all her recordings are pitch perfect, they're autotuned. It's being able to sing well live that counts. Taylor Swift is the worst thing to happen to the music industry because she proves that it's not talent that makes someone successful, but the ability to act victimized.

I think Taylor Swifts whole marketing strategy is getting very OLD and BORING. They keep trying to portray this GROWN lady as this "innocent little country bumpkin". NOT!!!! Taylor needs to start acting her age and STOP trying to be this little victim from the country. It's utterly boring and very, very lame. The reality is she's NOT a very talented singer, she's pitchy every time she sings and she's very, very stiff. If I was Taylor I would focus on WRITING those great songs she writes, that's where her god-given talent is. The reason she's being pushed as a singer is because she FITS the marketing package mold. She's easy to package and sell, sell, sell!!!

There are FAR MORE better singers than Taylor Swift, but they are not easily marketable. It's ALL about visual projection in the record business!!! Bottom line.

It seems I'm a bit late to this parade, but I wanted to comment anyways. I'm 23 and have a unique music taste. I don't tend to listen to what my friends listen to (ex. Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, etc.). I tend to gravitate toward British rock, oldies, country and classical music. Why i don't know. But i enjoy it. This is just me as someone who doesn't care personally for Taylor Swift's singing.. who cares? It is the old saying from the Married With Children days. "Dont like the show? Change the channel." If you dont like a certain style of music or musician (talented or not), just change the radio station or TV channel off MTV. Yes, we all go out in public and hear the same popular songs whether you enjoy them or not. But you just have to deal with that.

I am sure Swift is aware she can't sing great and it is all production. Music magic i call it. However, I am sure she has a coach that trains her to improve her singing ability and one day she may get better. But honestly, folks, who cares? She is living the American Dream and is famous. God bless her for it. Same with Justin Bieber. Her music speaks to teens because all they care about his relationships and the heart break that follows. If you don't like her talent, turn her off and find something else to enjoy. The Black Crowes singer is correct but the bashing of Swift just doesn't make sense. Don't like the music, turn it off.

Most of Taylor Swift's bigger songs are "co-written" with a professional songwriter by the name of Liz Rose. Taylor Swift is not a talented songwriter. She is not a talented singer either. She is little more than a pretty-faced puppet for Universal Music Group. The Black Crowes may not be the greatest rock band to have ever walked the planet, but their singer hit the nail on the head with this one.

    • hello there

Amen! I'm pretty certain that when she won a Grammy last year, I noticed that Colbie Caillet (?) was a co- writer, yet I didn't see her up there collecting an award. UMG wants us to believe that she is this teen machine that is doing everything on her own but EVERYONE knows she is working with professional songwriters. It's just a better "story" for them to sell to the public and apparentlly alot are buying it!

She isn't alone in this but she is being credited for being a fantastic artist in full control of her career. I think she probably does excercise more control than other artists, but essentially the labels make the final decision on everything all artists do from imaging to sound and all in between.

As a classically trained musician, I do have to agree, Taylor Swift can't sing in tune. Did you see her performance at last years Grammy Awards. It was not good at all. I don't personally like her lyrics, as I feel they reinforce the idea of women being an object (consider in Love Song she never actually does anything but only has things done to her), but I do think she could have a great career as a song writter. Why does every writter have to perform as well?

First – taylor swift is a country musician, which is usually a contradiction in terms. Nelly has never produced a note of music, like all rappers he chants to samples and random notes some producer clips together. I wouldn't call Swift "cute" she has a weird, demented elf look. The bottom line – no one is going to be listening to any of the entertainment acts mentioned in this article in 50 years, except possible the Black Crowes.

Someone stopped listening to Country because of Swift? WHY?? She's hardly your typical Country artist. But how about we focus on the TOPIC of this blog - which IS NOT ABOUT whether Swift is Country or not (who cares!!), NOR is it about the quality of her singing ( if you read Chris Robinson's full statement, he CRITICIZED people who get all caught up in a singer "hitting the right note" as a standard of excellence, saying EMOTION was more important. Which proves he criticized Swift without having a clue about her as an artist, because that's what she IS all about. But instead of being a role model for hormonally-driven teenage buys, like most rock artist5s, Swift has FINALLY given young women a spokesperson. She sings - in a voice that is just right - the very real, intense emotions of young women: the softly-whispered passions AND the shrill, frustrated outbursts. WHO else has ever so truly captured the day-to-day diary of "everygirl"? What songs by any other performer - pop or rock or country - sound JUST THE SAME as Taylor's? Maybe if Chris has criticized Miley or Britney I might agree; but, in choosing Taylor he's selected the wrong target, and demonstrated a little male chauvinism to boot.

Anyone that has a real ear for music and was around before auto-tune and synthesizers knows that TS cannot sing a lick. Whenever she has played live performances (which are few because she lip-synches) she sounds like 50 cats being run over by a rocking chair. She is out of tune, off-key, pitchy and the lyrics are just crap. Yet, for those tone deaf people, who keep buying her albums, she is sweet (syrupy sweet), cute (in an odd way), and relates to the tweens. I simply tune her out and turn her off whenever I hear her. That means no more CMA specials, because those idiots dont know country music from dog poop.

No one plays an instrument and all the music sounds the same and the artists look the same and move the same..its ridiculous and watered down...most "artist" today don't have real talent....its about the look and the computer will clean their voice, and tone....its horrible...this is the mess our kids have to hear..I'm a child of 70's and 80's when there where bands on stage bringing the house down the same band thats on the studio album...Sade PLEASE GO ON TOUR

Glad someone finally called her out. Cute girl, with some talent, but overhiped IMO. Great that she's a writer-many great voices are always looking for a good song. She's got good stage presence at a young age and the "younger" kids like her. I've heard her live and it's bad. No amount of stage presence can cover that up. Seems like a sweet girl, but overrated in my book. She came out of nowhere and never "paid her dues". Her age is what got her noticed at first.

My take on all of this is... industry wrecks everything. People who do this want to make music whether that's through writing lyrics, singing someone else's lyrics or both. These people want to share their talent with others and to let them know that they have gone through similar experiences by writing it in the music. That is why the get these type of jobs. Industry comes in and wants money and their name attached to it. So people invest in it by clothing the singer, doing their makeup and hair. All of them benefit from that one person because they want to look their best.

So far I think Taylor is doing a great job at staying level-headed in this business and a great role model for kids these days...

I would love to see how different this argument would be if she wasn't so pretty. If she was average looking with her average voice she never would have made it. Sadly, the music industry isn't interested in real talent, just cute girls with a hook, in this case "she writes her own songs!"

At least so far by her behavior she has proved herself to be an ok role model for kids. That's more than you can say for most people in the music industry these days.

Miguel, we get it, great, she can write her own music. Lets give her the award for "Writing Your Own Music". Just because you can write your own songs doesnt mean they are good songs AND it doesnt automatically make you a talented artist. Plus the fact that the BC "most sold song" was a remake means they obviously did something right with that song.

I love Taylor. If you dont think she is a great singer thats fine but she is a great songwriter. She writes ALL of her own music and doesnt rely on synthesizers and other trash like that to make it sound good. She promotes a positive message and is a positive role model for young girls who, until her, had Miley Cyrus and other people of that nature to look up to (God forbid). So, in my opinion Taylor is great, if you dont share that opinion then whatever, but dont call her a no talent, because she most certainly IS NOT. Its not fair to compare her to other musicians in other fields either, because no, she will never be as great as The Beatles or Van Halen or The Kinks or Michael Jackson or Nirvana but thats OK because she isnt TRYING to be like them, shes trying to be like her and in a world where literally every song on the radio sounds the same I think thats what makes her great! Taylor is a breath of fresh air 🙂

no, not really, twilight became famous gradually, and then the pr started, after it hit people on the personal level. its the same with taylor swift, she came from a pretty small label, slowly got a little famous, due to constant touring and radio interviews, and then only after people started connecting with her, she became famous. nothing really prepackaged about both.

I've never thought Taylor Swift had any crazy amount of talent. She's purely OK, super tall, and pretty enough.

I was convinced of her averageness when I saw a "live performance" she did on tv... she stood there and "played" guitar which consituted having her left hand forming a G chord and never wavering from it.

She's not a guitarist, and she really can't sing either.

Bad timing for Chris Robinson. The Crowes are playing in Nashville this weekend, and all over the local press, it's the typical reactionary redneck response: "If'n ya don't like it, y'all can just go back where ya came from." How dare someone criticize one of Nashville's own?!!

As long as there are 10 year old girls, there will always be crappy, disposable, forgettable pop music. But there will also be great artists who make phenomenal music in reaction to the crap.

Turn on the nighly news in Wyomissing, it is all Philly. You could argue that Berks is not one of the direct surrounding counties like Bucks, Montgomery or Delaware counties, but if it is not suburban Philly then why do I hear their traffic report in the morning on my Philly radio stations. My biggest issue with Taylor Swift is she has a huge following but can't reproduce live what she does on her albums. She is so popular for being a "real" artists, but every time I've heard her live it was physically painful to me. I know that a lot of boy bands (when they were relevant) and pop singers use auto tune and lip-sync and all that, but they aren't really respected as "artists", where as Swift is. It's not hard to write lyrics about how hard it is to go to high school. It's not hard to make stuff decent to listen to with Auto-tune. (Ex. Double Rainbow Song, Bed Intruder Song). If you can't sing on stage the same way you do on your albums, I don't respect you. Bieber, Miley, etc... they don't bother me because I know they're a passing phase. I feel like Swift is around to stay, and I just wish people would gravitate towards someone with real talent.

She may not be the BEST singer out there... but you know her fans are gonna stand behind her. And that's what it's all about isn't it?
Besides, some of the best artists in the world arn't top notch singers. Look at Bob Dylan... or Johnny Cash.
I think it's really horrible that a band like the Black Crowes (or any other artist for that matter) go around dis' ing other artists. To me part or being an artist is supporting others...
You don't necessarily have to like every style of music... or ever musician out there... but the least you can do is respect them.

The people she connects to are high school kids and people who never realized life goes on and changes for 50+ years after you leave high school. Bob Dylan or Johnny Cash might not have been the best singers, but they FELT what they were singing and they could do it live. It's an insult to either of them to compare this girl's dribble to their music. 50 years later, we still talk about Dylan and Cash and their influence on music. Who will be talking about Swift?

bob dylan and johny cash have had long careers, thats why people remember them. taylor swift is just starting and improving as a songwriter. she is 20 years old, thats why she is writing "high school/collegeish music", yet i always think some people expect her to sing songs with the mindset of a 70 year old. give it a few years, and then start the judging.

My only question is, what is she going to write about in five years? You can only write and sing about high school experiences so long. Also, in my personal opinion, she is not a great singer. Even when she is "autotuned and remixed", she is only a barely tolerable vocalist.

Seriously, this girl is doing everything right! How else do you explain her becoming one of the most popular artists in the world today! Of course some other artists are going to say "I don't like her" ... she's kicking their asses all over the charts. Its sad that everyone is taking aim at one artist claiming she has no talent considering almost everything on the radio these days is autotuned and remixed to make it playable.

The only thing that matters is that she wants to give her fans what they want ... and she's doing it better than most!

Taylor's a nice fresh little hottie who has got the world at her feet. Time will tell how talented she truly is. ALL music is derivative in one way or another that's not the point. It's the cookie-cutter sound-alike, look-alike cloned identikit sameness and blandness that the music industry pumps en masse that Chris Robinson is railing against. Pop records and artists run through auto-tuners with electronic beeps and bleeps and computer generated sonic backgrounds in place of musicians really has no personality. Radio has been infected by corporate takeovers and backs only those artists whose sound fits into their ultra-narrow parameters for what they deem airplay worthy... which is usually only the most faceless plastic pre-fab crap being spewed out of the studios by a small elite group of producers and music moguls. The sterility and inhuman blandness is what has gotten the music industry into the sorry state it's now in. There needs to be more artists with real character and edge to their sound and recordings: Music that intrigues, entices, interests, and inspires new generations to take up the gauntlet – and there needs to be a radio format that supports that type of music.

I could sit down and write a song about kiddie heart break too, that doesn't mean I have any musical talent. It is easy to impress young kids between the ages of 3 and 15, come on now. In 5 years people won't remember her because she is without talent. And she is mousy looking

I agree with you lora, Taylor can't carry a tune in a bread basket!! She sings off key and out of tune, I really wish they would stop calling her a country singer, she is no more country than the man in the moon. All of her songs are about "my boyfriend did me wrong, bubblegum and this is what happened to me in high school"

Lets give some props to the real country singers who have great voices and leave Taylor to her teenyboppers.

The Black Crowes were a fine rock band, but very derivative of the Stones and other influences. Truth is, the Crowes never developed onto something unique. They had a couple of albums that went 5 x platinum - nothing special in the '80's (BORN TO RUN sold 30 Million, BACK IN BLACK went 49 M, Tom Petty has twice the career sales of the Crowes). It seems like Chris is envious of Swift's success and has chosen to discriminate against an artist he obviously doesn't know a thing about with thoughtless stereotype profiling. She's blond, young, pretty, sings pop, so in his mind she must be superficial and manufactured. The joke is Taylor may be the most self-made star in years, and the one with the greatest artistic control over everything she does - writing the songs, performing them, recording them, designing and putting together her concerts, co-producing videos, making marketing and business decisions - all w/o the help of Disney, American Idol, or even a major record label. I doubt Chris had as much control as Swift does. Then he makes matters worse by saying "singing isn't always about being on key; it's about emotionality(sic)". To which Taylor's fans would agree 100%!!

I think Taylor has a nice voice, and she sings songs about things I remember as a girl and things my daughters will be going through soon. Just because this middle aged Kate Hudson cast-off needs media attention because his music is no longer popular doesn't mean his opinions have greater merit than any other individual's. And, I'm a straight chick, but I'd rather cuddle up to Taylor than have to wake up to Chris's nasty a$! mug! He wishes he looked as good as Mick Jagger will in 20 years. No wonder Kate dumped him to diddle someone hotter! Chris, you are just obsolete dude. Fade away.

Yeah, and I bet you think Brittany Spears is a good singer too. Grow up and listen to some ADULT music so that all of us adults out here are not forced to endure such dumb and uncreative crap like this. She may be fine for tweens but when I see and hear of women over 20 praising it, it just shows that they never grew up either. There are so many types of music out there that is not played on the radio and makes the singers rich. Some people actually do it for the art. If I had a daughter, I would steer her CLEAR away from anything put out on the radio.

My sister loves Swift and all her studio versions sound PERFECT because of the autotune she uses. When she's live it's all pitchy and off key! THAT'S WHY she s*cks! Not because I'm jealous, or I'm a hater. Katy Perry has a better live voice than Taylor does so does Bon Jovi, Alexa Ray Joel, Pink and many others.

Yes, Katy Perry, a woman who writes all her own songs, plays instruments and never uses her looks to promote herself! She's very different from Taylor.
Actually, I like both artists. However, Katy puts her G cups front and center in marketing everything she does musically. Where are men's slams on her using her looks to get ahead? She's a religious music maker who sold out to popular culture to make a dime. I think Taylor is more authentic.

So here’s the deal, Alison. Your last post was 11:12 on September 1. I count that as 2 11’s. Just because I can. You left something off the post itself. My wife says, “Ya left off, “It’s,” Swift, as in, “It’s go time.”” I looked at her, not too concerned, and she said, “Bring it on, Chunky. You’ll be wearing that ear ring as a collar...” I kissed her, not too gently, until she was calm, which took far longer than I expected, because she was really hot. I don’t know where the passion comes from. I imagine she gets it from Jennette McCurdy, who gets it from me. Sent Jennette a Fea Bea. She plays with it all the time, and to justify all her “quiet time” she tells people she is “just thinking real hard.”

Jennette McCurdy and Taylor Swift spend more time “thinking,” lately, than anyone I know. The Cat is not “thinking,” but appears to be in heat. She be rubbing up on everything, and having way too much fun.

Anyway, Ms. Swift, I’m going to see a movie, maybe. If you can interrupt your “quiet time,” I’ll try to set the record straight when I get back. I think you know what that means.

see before making any statement its better to research it.
first of all respect to the black crowes for selling all the albums.
but i mean taylor swift wrote every single one of her songs on her new album, no cowriters, and she coproduced it. aside from that she decides her stage set, and im pretty sure shes involved in all of the decisions everywhere else. so its hard to say shes not talented or hardworking in any way.
some of course say all of her songs sound the same, but thats also not really true. the correct thing to say is most of her singles sound the same. there are songs such as best day, change, fifteen, etc, that are completely different, if you want to go listen to something different than her singing about fairytaleish stuff, you can always go listen to that.
also she is improving her songwriting still, it will get deeper and deeper as the years go by, its only natural, and she shouldnt be writing full " deep mature" songs at 20 anyways, because come on not a lot of people are really mature at 20 as it is.
its the same with her singing, shes nowhere near bad and keeps improving every year, there are a ton of her live performances on youtube to prove that. i understand some people just want to listen to great voices, but the beauty about music these days is that you don't have to listen to taylor swift if you don't want to, there are so many artists and radio channels out there, you cango listen to il divo or carrie underwood or anyone else. just the same though having a great voice doesn't mean you're more talented than someone who writes well too.

Taylor writes and performs her OWN music Stoneloc. To be honest most people who say taylor is bad dont have much to judge her by. They listen to only her singles, maybe only one or two, and make accusations based on..well basically nothing. Taylor writes her own music (speak now dosnt even have any co-writes on it), she performs without autotune and dosnt lipsync, she plays guitar and piano, and is all around a good person. But plenty of people dont see that due to accusations made against her and the little research and effort people are willing to put forth these days. So to all you people who I was just talking about, Way to go! Stick to that negative, cynical, uninformed point of view! Don't let facts or reason get in your way!

But I do think that if anyone uses an auto-tuner....I think they have no talent: You can take THE WORST SOUNDING VOICE EVER and make it cool with that type of machine. It's cheating. I think Chris Robinson has a point that" they have stylists who dress them, they make records with producers who play a chord into the computer and it all coms out the same," No individuality!! And most think Naptster and the Internet is what's behind the downfall of the music industry. It's part of it....but I think it's the lack of creativity and talent......and use of a little machines that make you sound better than you are. Total B.S.

    • Did someone redefine talent and not tell me?

Yes indeed! Taylor Swift sounds fantastic...after they AutoTune her. What a joke. The music industry is in the pits. What about the Beatles? They were great without having to "fix" their voices. I don't care if Taylor Swift is the nicest most considerate person in the universe. Please just do us all a favor and lay off the mic, girl. Stick to songwriting if you really do write your songs and have the cast of Glee perform it or something. I've seen Glee Live and I've heard some of them on Broadway and they don't *need* Autotune (though I think the show still uses it for some crazy reason). Taylor Swift live was one of the two most painful moments of my life. Kidney stones being the second. Ugh.

And for the record? No I don't think Kanye was right when he interrupted her during her speech at the VMAs but the dude had a point...

I guess the issue is that the appreciation for music and art is a very personal thing. I have seen Taylor Swift live and she has an incredibly beautiful singing voice. She sings to me!

I am so glad someone finally fonted that. Every time I see this child on a show...or see her win an award...I scratch my head everytime. I should have a bald spot there.

I totally agree with the Taylor Swift mystery. I can't believe that she has won as many awards as she has because she can't sing in person. She may write her own lyrics but maybe that is what she needs to stick to – – song writing. Whoever is the magic maker behind Swift should be getting paid big $$$ because he is making a lot of something out of very little.

They sold over 30 million albums. Someone likes them, just like people like Taylor Swift. Go figure it out on your own bonehead.

If you're going to insult the band at least spell their name correctly when you do it.

I have to agree that Taylor Swift can not sing a note, if there was no back up singers and no flash at her shows she would no have anything. Taylor can not carry a note at all, she might be cute but that is it, just like this Justin Bieber can not sing a note either, they have no concept of real music and talent

While I agree that Taylor Swift cannot sing to save her life, singing live at least, she does actually write a lot of her songs. Not just lyrics, but sheet music too, which is more than most pop artists can say.

And yeah, like troll patrol said, Black Crows matter because....?

You ppl are odd. Taylor has a very pretty voice. Best ever? No of course not. But then again I can't stand the Beatles and some would say they are the greatest and that's a joke to me. As far as Kanye goes, I am sorry but Beyonce's video stunk. The song was ok, but plz...three girls dancing does not make a great video in of itself. If you want to trash a singer about ruining the industry....go after Britney Spears. Have you heard that girl sing without any help? The modern downfall of music started there....not with Taylor.

Taylor Swift sucks – I feel like it's obvious but I feel like an alien..a minority. People listen to really horrible music, I think there must be different ways brains interpret music because it makes no sense why people are always drawn to songs that sound exactly the same with the most simplistic lyrics – and record makers know this concoction of bland creates gold everytime, whether you put a country twang or dance beat behind it. Always amazed at the tens of hundreds of songs keep getting released with the U2 "with or without you" chord progression and become instant hits

@Brian- Ok...you don't like Taylor and then go into a rant about everything but Taylor music. What don't you like about Taylor?

.....and when was the last time you had a top hit? I find that to be totally poor etiquette on his part to say that.
