Casting Spider-Man's love interest

Now that Andrew Garfield is attached to play Peter Parker in an upcoming "Spider-Man" project, the studio is reportedly starting to consider who will play his leading lady.

THR reports that there are a number of actresses in contention to play the part of Spider-Man’s love interest, but these are just meetings. If all six of the names mentioned in the report fall to the wayside, don’t be surprised.

The names of the handful of women reportedly being considered are listed below, although the entertainment trade paper did note that others are also thought to be in the running for the role:

Imogen Poots

You’ve likely seen this 21-year-old Brit in quite a few places, even if you don’t recognize her name. She’s had roles in “28 Weeks Later”; “V for Vendetta,”; “Me and Orson Welles”; and “Solitary Man.” Poots is currently working on a remake of “Fright Night.”

Lily Collins

British/American actress Lily Collins, 21, is the daughter of Phil Collins and was last seen in “The Blind Side” as Collins Tuohy.

Teresa Palmer

Teresa Palmer is a 24-year-old Australian actress who can now be seen alongside Nicolas Cage in “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.”

Ophelia Lovibond

This 24-year-old British actress had a starring role in the recent U.K. films “Nowhere Boy" (2009) and "" (2010).

Emma Roberts

Emma Roberts, 19, is the daughter of Eric Roberts (so yes, that makes Julia Roberts her aunt) and rose to fame on Nickelodeon’s “Unfabulous.” She also played the lead in “Nancy Drew” in 2007.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead

Winstead, 25, has a number of horror flicks under her belt, including “Final Destination 3” and “The Ring 2,” but if you want to see her on the big screen and not have to scream in fear, she’s playing opposite Michael Cera in “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.”

why does peter parker love interest have to be the typical safe white female character!!!! / these women look so boring and look like every other character in every other movie!!!/ why dont they mix it up for a change and get a african american up in there, i bet you that would be more interesting and hopefully a interesting script!! (i'm just saying)!!!

    September 27, 2010 at 11:38 pm | Report abuse |

@ANGEL : In all honesty, dear friend, even in this day and age, Hollywood is not that comfortable with interracial relationships or love scenes; neither are the majority of American audiences.
The casting for films, I think, is not only based on "reality" but what is perceived as being, believable and "credible"
in the mind of the audience.Obviously, interacial relationships do exist in the real world, but not are most likely not considered "desirable" for a SPIDERMAN screenplay.
However, if an "African American" were to be cast as PETER PARKER'S love interest, it should be YOU or HALLE BERRY! : )

Look, I am not a big Spiderman fan, but if Sam Raimi can make me care about a teenage boy who gets bitten by a genetically engineered spider, I say let him keep making the films. What's wrong with Peter Parker growing up?

Please feel free to join the conversation about films at

We'd love to hear what you think, and often.

For those of you who believe it was/is about the money it is actually funnier than that!! Ready for it?? Wait for it!!! He didnt want to be typedcast!!! There, i said it!! I understand that acting is an art and as an actor/actress being typedcast into one role could be disastrous but here is the thing, typecasing usuall follows those movies in which they turn out horrible and i thought all the Spider Man movies were great and he brought a humaness to Parker. I wonder if the executives realize this could turn out to be a very bad gamble as its not like Batman in which different leading men played the part of Bruce (which i believe was an attempt to say Batman was anyone not just one person) but Parker's role played by Toby made it his but i will give it the benefit of the doubt as comic book movies are very good and original so here's hoping:)

i don't know why people care so much about where an actor is from. if a foreign actor can out-act american ones, then he/she should get the part. besides, actors (including american ones) fake accents all the time.

Imogene Pools seems like the logical choice to be Spidermans love interest. She has a young, but more mature look that would show Mary Jane evolving along with the storyline as time has passed. Her acting has centered around horror flicks. It would be nice to see her in a different movie genre.

He has got to be the gawkiest funniest-looking guy ever! It's like casting Barney Fife as spiderman. they couldn't have found a normal-looking guy? I'm not sure he could get those bizarre eyebrows and funky nose under a face mask. They'll probably cast Marilyn Manson as MJ.

I'm less interested in who the actress will be so much as what character she'll be playing. Since Pete's supposed to be in high school, will she be playing his original high school girlfriend, Betty Brant? Or will she be Gwen Stacy? MJ, perhaps?

Not an Emma Roberts fan – she has kind of a boring presence about her. She isn't intriguing like Kirsten was. Lookwise some of those other girls work though I don't know them very well. But they have more interersting looks.

I do not understand the casting of Emma Roberts in anything; she lacks big screen talent and I doubt she would have won any of her prior roles if not for her family connection to Hollywood. Please, cast someone who can carry the role, even if they are a "no name."

I agree. I think they should consider someone who is not a "noname" but a great actor who is not a household name yet, Brittany Curran. She may be a little too young, but is on Men Of A Certain Age and has been in a lot of other stuff. An amazing actor with great range. And she looks really good on the big screen.

And Wolverine is played by an Aussie, but he's Canadian anyhow. At least Captain America will actually be an American...but a British Spidey just seems stupid. You can't tell me there aren't any eligible young American actors who can take the role of Peter Parker, instead we get this big-haired idiot. What's next, Mary Jane from Pakistan?

American actors seem to care more about the MONEY than their craft of acting, that's why they hired a Brit. Andrew Garfield is getting less than 5 million to play Peter/Spidey for the new trilogy. While Tobey Maguire got nearly 50 million for the first trilogy, and not to mention, he was a horrible Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Garfield will act rings around him. And he's doing it, why, because he loves the character? Tobey did it strictly for the MONEY, admitting that he wasn't even a Spider-Man fan, and knew very little about the core of the character, and it showed on screen. We need people who actually know the characters (or are willing to do some research), and care more about just getting a huge paycheck and producing mediocre work, which Tobey did. Which sums up the majority of young (American) Hollywood actors.
