Gaga poised to pass Britney Spears on Twitter

Looks like Lady Gaga is experiencing the "Fame Monster" for real - the outrageous singer is about to topple Britney Spears as the most-followed Twitter user.

Social-media tracker FameCount reports that Spears currently sits atop the Twitter throne with 5,659,701 million followers as of this morning, while Gaga runs an extremely close second with 5,655,299.

But Gaga's fan legion of Little Monsters could change that very quickly. This month alone, the "Bad Romance" singer garnered 600,000 new Twitter followers, while Spears drew in only 200,000.

And while she hasn't quite made the transformation from glitter queen to Twitter queen just yet, Gaga, 24, is the most popular online entity worldwide, with more than 16 million Facebook fans and over 330,000 YouTube subscribers, according to FameCount. Even President Barack Obama's Web popularity comes in second place to Gaga's.

Meanwhile, Gaga fans might be disappointed to learn that their idol won't be singing at the September 12 MTV Video Music Awards, but the show won't be any less entertaining. As host Chelsea Handler told Ryan Seacrest on his radio show yesterday, "Gaga isn't performing this year but she'll be in the audience; we'll probably end up wearing the same outfit."

the media machine glom onto people for a period of time and ride them for all they're worth. she's not on CNN (this story) because she's worth it, CNN is running (yet another) story about her because they want to pull traffic and sell banner ads to sponsors. think about how trivial this story is. it doesn't matter. next time CNN will report on the new nail polish color gaga is wearing...any excuse to post a story, pull some traffic and sell some more ad space to sponsors. same game with every other media source that's pushing this talentless b1tch. as soon as she stops pulling the traffic (people grow bored with her like they always do with EVERY celebrity eventually), CNN (and everyone else) will stop focusing on her completely and she'll be discarded like a used sanitary napkin.

Gag vs Spears?!?! This is what modern popular music has come to? Gaga should have to credit her costume designers and give them 90% of her proceeds. Spears needs to hibernate for 20 years and work on her skills.

She's a current fad for the younguns. I've heard her music, and she's okay I guess if you're into Pop Music, but a legend she is NOT. There seems to be a formula for Pop Princesses. First, find a young woman who has mediocre to somewhat above average talent; 2nd, hype them up as a prodigy, like they were born to do music (aka Brittany = Mickey Mouse Club/ Lady Gaga = piano player at age 4); 3rd, completely overexpose them to the point where you're just sick of hearing about them; 4, give them a $h!t ton of awards; and lastly, flash forward three to five years later and they either crash & burn publicly or drift off into the sunset. It's sad, but that's the nature of the beast we call Pop Culture.

You are so right. We seem to live in a culture where we for some reason have to act like every new pop starlet is going to be the new so-and-so, trying desperately to put them in to a "legendary" status. I remember when Britney first came out how everyone treated her basically the same way that Gaga is treated now: proclaiming her as the new Madonna, give her tons of awards, freak out over every little thing she does, overexpose her to nauseum, until the next new pop "legend" comes along. Gaga is exceptionally talented and will certainly have a long standing career, but she's not so special that she will break that trend, regardless of how many records or online fans she's getting on youtube and twitter.

it's mainly because g a y s run the entertainment industry now and this is how they operate. they love projecting themselves onto these kind of 'empowered s3x goddess' archetypes, because, essentially, they wish to be that for themselves. they also love juicy, salacious gossip and controversy, so as long as the g a y s are in charge of entertainment in america, you can be sure of more of the same.

I really like Lady Gaga, but I honestly still don't really understand the Gaga-mania. I mean, she is really talented, really entertaining, has some catchy tunes and stellar music videos, and is overall a very hard working show woman, but isn't a bit of an exaggeration to say she is the next Elvis/Madonna/Elton John/Prince, etc? Even saying she is a revolutionary is really pushing it. It just seems a bit much to compare her to the likes of legends when she's still, more or less, just starting off her career. A year or two from now, whose to say that she will still have the same attention and fame? She has only made one real album, and yet everyone is making her out to be as if she's an icon just because she wears a lot of flashy over the top outfits. Basically, all I'm saying is that this Gaga mania is just getting out of hand. Yes, the numbers say that she is hugely successful and has a huge fan base, but Gaga hasn't yet shown us that she is an artist with substance and I think still has a long way to go before she hits the prime of her career. Let's wait until she has at least made 5-7 albums before jumping to the conclusion that she is some legend. If the legends before her can work hard and make a couple of albums with substance before being called legendary, so can she.

And I know many of you are gonna chime in and lecture about how she has played the piano since the age of 4, went to Julliard and NYU, and so on. This shows that she is definitely no talentless bimbo. Still, nonetheless, the hype she is getting in regards to being compared to legends and icons is far too exaggerated at this point of her career. That's all I'm saying.

I like Gaga and I like Britney. However this is the music busines, "one day you're in the next day you're out." Today is Gaga a legend, of course not and only time will tell. But being a legend requires quite a bit of substance to your craft and you must revolutionize the music industry in some capacity and this she has not accomplished. Just more of, been there done that for now.

She actually has revolutionized the industry. The cover of Variety said the other day that she "single handedly" revived the Music Video, creating a partnership with Vevo that creates a new revenue stream. Her videos have been viewed over 1 Billion times, Bad Romance has been seen over 250,000,000 times. Compare that with only 90 million for Single Ladies by Beyonce.

    • lala

@ Chandler- So she has basically impacted the internet based on her music videos, but that does NOT make her a legend! Basically she has shown that she has a huge online fanbase who constantly watches her videos, that's it, don't make it out to be revolutionary when in reality, it is not. She hasn't revolutionized MUSIC. That is what shell is referring to. Relax, give her time, right now, Gaga is extremely popular but a legend she is not. Call her that when she has more than one album and a couple of songs to her current fame. Her music has NO substance, it is just fun, catchy, pop music, that's all it is at the end of the day regardless of what the numbers say. You can't put numbers over musical substance, Lady Gaga will get there but it takes more than just one album and a huge internet fanbase from Vevo to make it there.

I think Britney and Lady Gaga have both paid their dues: if you read Lady Gaga's bio to see how she got to where she is now, you'll see she didn't just suddenly get her fame handed to her. She worked hard in the clubs of New York and just like so many singers/actors, had the fortune to eventually get discovered after a lot of hard work. The one thing that makes me feel bad about Britney is that she was thrown into show biz from childhood, and I can't claim to know a lot about her career, but from what I do know she's been in show biz all her life. She's done fabulously considering that (not being able to have a "normal" childhood and life, if there is such a thing as "normal"), and considering her battles with mental illness, I really admire her. The only thing I wish is that Britney would speak out more for people with mental illness: she's so famous and loved by so many that I think she'd do a huge amount to take away the stigma mental illness still carries. Regardless of that, I admire both Britney and Lady Gaga, and I don't think this should be a contest, they're both talented and who cares about Twitter.

I think the woman is talented and a hell of a performer, I just wish people focused more on her music instead of so much on her fame and fashion statements. Trolls don't usually explain themselves... they just straight out throw the hate where they want, when they want. You're fine.

I don't really like Lady Gaga at all, but she is definitely more talented than Britney Spears. You can take anyone from the street and do what Britney does, but Gaga... different story. Gaga is definitely hard to duplicate. People say she copies Madonna, but that shouldn't matter... people copy each other all the time... it's called paying respect to the people before you.

I'm not so much a fan of her music, but I do think she is very talented and her performances are great, you can tell that she puts her heart and soul into it. I'm looking forward to the day when she will make music with more substance, the stuff she is doing now is honestly not reflective of her talent and is more or less kinda gimmicky, but now that she has made it she can definitely do anything she likes, the world is her oyster. I don't so much mind her "copying" Madonna, I think it mainly annoys me when people compare her to the likes of legends when she is only getting started. She has only made one real album and is really only known for a couple of songs, I just think people are overreacting far too much and trying so desperately to proclaim her as a legend. Fan or not, nobody can say that her music is in the same ranks of Madonna, Elton John, etc. Right now, she is making really fun, good, catchy pop songs, and has all the potential to make better, more meaningful pop songs. I'm just sick of the hype. Otherwise, I have much respect for Gaga and her amazing talent.

You people don't know what talent is! All of these so called people like Gaga and Spears use auto-tune and recorded tracks they sing along with during live performances when they are not lip syncing. They are not talented! Many of them don't write the music to their songs. Gaga is more of a copy of a singing version Ru-Paul then she is Madonna. The reason they get as much press as they do is because they have really good publicists to keep them in the news.

@Jsck – see, if you did your homework, you wouldn't sound so ignorant. Lady Gaga doesn't use Autotune and she writes her own songs as well as songs for other artists. It's fine to say you don't like her, but at least get your facts straight.
