Neil Patrick Harris expecting twins

Neil Patrick Harris is the latest member of the “How I Met Your Mother” cast to get bitten by the baby bug – the actor and his longtime partner David Burtka are expecting twins.

Harris – whose co-stars Alyson Hannigan and Cobie Smulders each became moms last year – announced his good news via Twitter on Saturday.

“So, get this: David and I are expecting twins this fall. We're super excited/nervous/thrilled. Hoping the press can respect our privacy,” he wrote.

According to reports, Harris, 37, and 35-year-old Burtka, an actor and chef, will welcome their bundles of joy via a surrogate in October.

Rumors first surfaced that the couple were searching for a surrogate in June 2009, but the former “Doogie Howser, M.D.” star slyly told People, “We are not currently expecting a baby," adding, “Maybe someday …" It looks like that day is here.

What did I miss ? Ahh...he campaigned on his agenda, or am I

the worst listener in the world. O.K. switching gears.

In New Hampshire Hospital – I can blog on computer. What a great

outlet. Now alittle rhyming dedicated to my gramma Finnegan and

Fitzgerald, oh, Kavanaugh and Kinney. Oh, Hetzelt is my great,

great grandmother's name – Germany, forbidden marriage, religous.

Now I say, walking up and down

the hall I have it all within my head, sometimes dread. Worn and torn

is the scorn; I wish I wasn't born – is shouting at me. When I was

created I was jaded. I've been here before so let's explore why I

surmise that you're a freak in disguise. Hey bold, do what you're

told. If you have something to say, say it to your face. Then

erase for more space, for the human race.

Honestly, in a world where children are starving to death, being cared for by two men or two women should be the least of our concern. Regardless of whether or not they're gay, I just hope they treat their kids right.

I find it utterly hard to believe that so many straights out there have so much time to devote to hating on people they will never meet. The "harm" children of gay parents will have to endure is from the children YOU raise to be hateful. If you are straight and protest this version of a family, maybe its because you KNOW what you are teaching your children and are too lazy to correct yourselves and learn/teach tolerance. I wish these MEN the best and I will laugh HYSTERICALLY if 20 years from now CNN features a story on how their kids turn out. I doubt they will be the like Kardashian / Hilton / Lohan spawn (still proud of traditional marriage and the children it creates?) Stop reading this and go look after your own children and spouse.

Wow, I didn't know the bible thumpers were on here in force. Can I ask one simple question to all you bible believers out there? Who wrote the bible? It was man. Not whoever you believe in. The bible was written to control the masses. It was used to scare people into believing. If you have to have a tool to make people believe in what you believe, then your believe isn't very strong. Let me know when someone dies and rots in the ground, then comes back to life and tells us about what it's like after death. Not, that there is a heaven and hell, because that is what the bible uses to control the sheep. Have a real through for once in your lives.

It amazes me that CNN will delete any comments against these "alternative" lifestyle people. Believe it or not, in the "real" world, there are people that don't agree with this type of thing. In the "real" world, most of us don't want to see this type of thing and in the "real" world, these "alternative" lifestyle people would get their a**es kicked. So, go ahead, call me a bigot or a hater or have my comment deleted but don't think for a moment that this type of thing is normal or approved of by the masses.

However let's not get too carried away with how fabulous they will be as parents. They will have to prove themselves like anyone else and as human beings will no doubt make the same mistakes as everyone else as they travel down the joyous but difficult road of parenting.

These kids are going to be born into a family in which both of the parents make a more than decent amount of money. They will have access to the best in food, shelter, clothing, and education. It would appear that your concerns for these poor children should be directed where it might do some good. If you are really concerned about kids, make a donation to help some of the one billion poor kids in the world instead of worrying about two that don't need your concerns directed toward them.

For those that have nothing positive to say, or judge the young couple due to the fact they are gay, stop wasting your time and ours! Life is too short to have so much negativity, live your lives positively! There is already so much hate in the world. Why add to it? All children deserve a happy home, and I'm sure the twins will have a most loving one. Cheers!

A child deserves to have a mother and a father, ideally the same mother and father who conceived him/her. People can sanitize this however they want. But the bottom line is that it is still incredibly selfish. Gays really do not have the best interests of the child at heart here. And that goes for single women too who go to sperm banks because they are too busy for a relationship or feel they don't "need a man."

People should stop making stupid remarks about which one of them is pregnant, there are plenty of women who are unable to conceive a child that doesn't make them inferior. What has this world become? We are surely near the end of time when it is becoming the "norm" to refer to two MEN as having twins. As a WOMAN and mother of three children, I am righteously disgusted at this perversion. Let me ask, which one of these MEN will BREASTFEED, Uh!. It is without a doubt that the erosion of the human race is fast becoming a reality when your magazine proudly condones, promotes, glorify, praise and admire such filth. Why were they not able to conceive children? You got it.....because they are two MEN! Neither can produce an EGG. Don't we need an EGG and SPERM to make children? Oh that's right......between the two of them, they each have SPERMS. Why aren't either of them able to give "their" child the best food nature can offer....you got it.....because they are MEN! Righteous indignation.

And by your argument, if i was sterile or lost my ovaries for some reason like sickness, i am condemed to never have kids?
If my husband leaves me or dies, then my children are sure to grow up to be woefully incomplete? By your definition also, I am worse than gay couples as a parent because atleast their kids will have 2 parents while I will be raising my kids on my own? If you call them Filth, then what am I to you?

If I can't breastfeed for some reason, then my children will be woefully deprived as humans, no matter how much I love and care for them?

Is this what your God teaches?

As a true Christian, I beg to disagree with your logic and your intolerance. Yes, read the Bible but also use your common sense and compassion.

For all of the jokers who think that the traditional family with a mother and a father is the only way that God wants us to live, I pose this question: What about all of the people who were robbed of the traditional family? Does God hate them too? My father died before I was born. Does that mean God hates me because I grew up without a father? Your argument is stupid and baseless. You are obviously men who are afraid of being reduced to nothing more than sperm donors by a society that has figured out how to sucessfully rear children in ways that don't conform to your idea of the "traditional family". Parents who love their children, engage them and teach them, raise successful, happy children regardless of their lifestyle. I have already witnessed evidence of this fact because instead of closing my mind to new ideas I listen and learn. The best thing that any straight or gay couple can give a child is love. Once a child knows that he or she is loved, they blossom and become what they are meant to be. And unlike some of the idiots on this site, children don't have closed minds because they haven't yet been exposed to a society that teaches hate, intolerance and ignorance. Therefore, they love their gay parents unconditionally and feel quite normal atleast until they've had the misfortune of meeting people who think like some of the idiots on this site. Not knowing how much some people hate their parents they are quite happy and content with their two Mom's or two Dads. It's too bad that there are so many hateful people in society who have the nerve to call themselves Christians who represent Gods beliefs. Personally, I've never met God because I don't look at the sky and see an invisible man, so I don't know WHAT God believes. I'd like to think that God is kind and loves all people because after all, if he created the world, he created all of the people in the world including gay people.

What does traditional have to do with the fact that it takes a man and a woman to make a kid? They should raise their kid because they made the child together. The first thing most strait couples wanna do is make a baby, it makes them feel complete. Gays can not make a kid which means it is not ment to be. Plain and simple people, plain and simple.

Sorry, CNN, but unless NPH grew a uterus, he is not "expecting twins." The surrogate is expecting twins. It has nothing to do with his being half of a gay couple, either. Any hetero man who says he is expecting is going to raise the same hackles on my female self. A man can get away with saying, "my (whatever you want to call the baby mommy) and I are expecting". But until the contributor of the Y can take on the onus of nine months of incubation - followed by hours or days of pain a man can only imagine - they better watch their mouths. And so better the reporters who write about them.

If our "Lord" knew today how our bodies worked and the dynamics of modern science, believe it or not, we HAVE progressed since those books, I would think he, being a loving, caring, understanding, etc person that we are supposed to believe he is would understand that this is the way of the world and "Go with the flow" so To speak. He would understand that if it is something natural, biological, then it can not be cursed and turned away. And for the morons who refuse to believe that it is NOT natural, read a science book and learn something. It'a as natural as having twins, But then again you still wouldn't except it. I'm just waiting for some Hollywood nut to come out of the closet saying they've been in a relationship with parrot for the last 5 years and have the bird announce that they are having children. Sounds stupid but 40 years ago people would have thought this was totally insane. This world is a mess.

delusional much. ONE mother ONE father???? What is the divorce rate? 50%? 60%? I bet right now you alone can name at least 1 kid that lives in a single parent situation...I bet half of us on here have no idea who their father is...who is to say that YOUR lifestyle is any better than another's? You may have an ideal, but that is what it is...an ideal. Anything on paper looks good until you peel it back. Is it better for a kid to be raised in an abusive household where the mother is beaten by the dad or vice versa? Is it better for the child to have a mother and father even though the dad molests the daughter nightly and the mother stands idly by all in the name of god and "one mother and one father"? Just throwing it out there...

    • Delusional much?

Why is it that supporters of gay marriage and gay parental rights always try this? You cite divorce rates to me...okay, when did I say that I was accepting of divorce? I'm happily married and I took my marriage vows seriously when I made them, so I will not be getting a divorce either. Divorce is a major problem and a plague to marriage. Does that mean I should just stop caring altogether, throw up my hands and say I don't mind if gays get married? Marriage is still sacred to me, and I live true to that belief in my own life. I will advocate the same for others because my family and I have to share in this society with everybody else, so I have a vested interest in its well-being. Likewise with abusive parents...did I ever say I was okay with that either? Why compound an existing problem by allowing further attack on children and their proper development by accepting other forms of sub-par parenting? Arguments such as yours prove nothing.

Chris, get off your high horse regarding values–based on the numbers, I am guessing that you or someone very close to you is either a product of a broken home (divorce, child out of wedlock), and has one of more "step" or "half" brother/sister, IS the reason for the broken home (cheating husband/wife).. hetero men and women have absolutely no right to take the moral high ground because everyone of them when we look in their closet have a few skeletons...look at all the loud mouth anti-gay politicians lately that have been caught with gay lovers...look at all the bible thumpers that have been caught cheating, politicians being divorced or exposed or having kids with multiple partners...ridiculous to come on here and pretend to be the guiding light for society, it is a freaking joke, so many dirt bags hiding behind religion and morality to spew hate but when you look close enough they are no different or better than the ones that they are comparing themselves too

The hypocrisy surrounding this subject is astounding–a hetero couple can have 2 kids, get a divorce, both members of this couple can meet others that have 2 kids of their own, they can then have 2 more kids each and this is normal. I am betting that almost everyone on this discussion knows somebody that has kids with more than one woman/man and it is normal...family psychologists have fancy terms like "blended family" to describe...does the hetero community worry about these kids being made fun of at school because they have 2 or 3 or 4 "half" brothers and sisters? It is amazing how many women I know that have kids with up to 4 lst names...has anybody thought about disallowing benefits or welfare for these people? Obviously they are doing their kids a disservice by living such a "disgusting, vile and ungodly" lifestyle, no?

Momo, you simpleton. There is no hypocrisy. Its wrong for a hetero couple to split up and screw up the kids too! Why do you morons always use bad examples to make gay couples look better? Bad examples are irrelevant. People always say, 'having a gay couple as parents is better than two abusive straight parents'. THAT IS NOT AN ARGUMENT. THAT IS IRRELEVANT. We are talking about a loving mother and father caring for their children. Gay parenting is wrong and so is straight parenting that is abusive. Why can't you get that through your thick skull?

It is not my right to judge, however, I feel a woman who rents her womb for two gay men is not thinking of the future for this child. Only the money she will get from the deal. Every child deserves to be loved. And I am certain these two men will love this child, but the child will be emotionally scared for life. Love is not enough outside the home. Every child deserves a Mommy (woman) and Daddy (man). I have seen it happen within a very close circle of friends. People are cruel and the child is going to suffer.

Do we still consider the world being flat? Except for the narrow minded bigots who are the dumbest people on the planet, do we still think blacks are inferior? With the exception of some mid-east countries, do we still think people should be stoned for sinning? My point is the world and its thinking evolve over time – hopefully to a better place. In the future gays will be a part of society without any stigma.

He kept saying that abortion was evil because it was god's will to have this child be born...but couldn't argue his way out of the opposite side, that many couples (straight) cannot have a baby naturally so resort to IVF, surrogacy, etc, which he condones. So which way is it? If god "wanted" babies to be born, he wouldn't have couples jump through hoops, would he? Or, hmm, maybe "he" just doesn't care, doesn't exist.

Good for you Neil. Two kids will live in luxury with loving people who had to fight to become parents (and not the result of an accidental pregnancy from a broken condom). As for you Christians criticizing this, that is your right. But your rights end when it starts to impinge on the rights of others. I dont believe in your Bible and I see no reason why laws should be enacted that cater to one religious group. If your faith was strong enough, you should be able to live by the tennets of your faith without having the government force everyone. And if you cant share living space with those who believe and live differently, go somewhere else.

Take religion out of the picture. Studies show that children thrive with a father and a mother that love them. Not being raised by two mothers, two fathers, 3 fathers and a duck.. no.. a father and a mother. To wish it any other way will not work.
Its like saying, 'yes I beat my kids but I buy them candy!' Depriving your children of their own parents is selfish and wrong.

What a load of crap that a child NEEDS a mother and a father. As a woman with a awesome best friend who is Gay male i must say that i swear he would probably make a better mother than me sometimes. One of the best things i can offer my child or try to instill in my child is an open mind. To not make judgments on people simply because they are different that yourself. My daughter knows that some guys like girls and some guys like guys etc. We don't feel the need to classify him as Gay simply because society prefers we classify everyone so then we can be judgmental of them because of that classification. Congrats to NPH and his partner couldn't be more happy for them to defy society and have two children.

You could not be MORE WRONG. In fact, there is another article on CNN.COM that proves a father AND a mother is crucial to the development of a healthy child. A loving father and mother. There are people out there without a father or a mother that would do ANYTHING to know their other side that created them. They want to know what makes them who they are. Not know your parents leaves you empty inside. Believe me, I know. People say they are loving but if they truly were, they would adopt kids that do not have parents at all instead of creating more fatherless and motherless children that will have psychological damage. This should be illegal.

Ok rough tally here: Note the comments of the Christians and religious nutcases above and you see a common thread. Hate, bigotry, calls for death, extreme negativity. The other side shows compassion, support, love, thoughtfulness. They run around with their bible spouting hate under a banner of their loving Jesus. It is this same misplaced misguided logic and attempt to force religion on others that just allowed the Taliban to stone a man and woman in Afghanistan. Notice a common theme?

Nobody wants to hurt NPH, he just shouldn't be allowed to 'buy' a kid with another man. As for gays being compassionate? Calling God a fairty tale and telling people they are idiots or crazies because they disagree with them is NOT being compassionate. THAT is being a bigot towards others. To all the people who seem to think these kids will be made fun of I disagree. We are living in an age where (most) parents are raising their children to view everyone as equals. My son who will be in 1st grade this year has a friend who has 2 lesbians as parents. Not ONCE have I heard of another child making fun of this little boy. My son has asked me why his friend has 2 mommies and I just tell him that every family is different and sometimes kids have a mommy and daddy and sometimes they have 2 mommies and sometimes 2 daddies. He really could care less. I know he's 6, but bottom line is kids don't care unless PARENTS make them care! At some point every child gets made fun of for something, if not gay parents then something else!

Judging by most of the approving comments this culture is going to hell in a septic tank.

Most people posting here should stop and re-evaluate the foundation that their so-called values are based upon.

Here's a sober thought; most people do not have a coherent foundation for their "values". Most peoples' values are firmly based in mid-air.

There's nothing to worry about. Most people out there (even most voters in California) are not as morally corrupt as many of the posters here. I'd say most of them are either gay themselves or confused.

True. As most people (in the United States) are Christians, the foundation for their values is completely incoherent. And here's why:

I'm a minority, adopted by "white folks" and I know how confused I was and how often we had to explain "oh, he's ours"

What the fcuk is someone going to do to have to explain why they have two moms or two dads?!?!?!?!

What will these kids do! Aren’t all children today raised in a loving home, by two educated parents of different genders, with good jobs, who planned their children, waited until a mature age to get pregnant? This is sarcasm if you haven’t figured it out. Most children in this world will never half of what these twins will. I got teased about all kinds of things when I was a kid. If a parent is worried about a kid being teased they might as well keep their kids in a bubble! Two loving parents that can provide for their twins.....sounds like great parents to me! Congrats 🙂

It's not about what the parents want; it's about what's best for the child. I would not have wanted my daughter to be raised by 2 men. Nor would I have wanted my son raised by 2 men or 2 women. I am NOT saying that gay folks cannot make good parents; they can. It is about what the child needs. A child needs a mother and a father. Granted, they can't always get that, but let's try to bring them into the world in an optimal environment. Too many children that grow up without a mother or father have a great big hole inside of them. There is definitely something missing. And it's not the adults who suffer from this void; it's the child.

Really..? What is BEST for the child is being surrounded by love and positivity, regardless from where it comes. As long as the chil knows he or she is loves unconditionally, they will turn out just fine.. Need an example..? Ask either of my 2 children, and I'm a lesbian 🙂

Sabrina, all the studies that have examined the effect of two gay parents (either two men or two women) have demonstrated that there is no statistical difference between children raised by straight parents and children raised by gay parents. It is simply not true that "children need a male parent and a female parent." Not only is that statement not backed up by science, but it relies on antiquated gender stereotypes that have also been proven to be incorrect. In other words, as long as the child gets all the influences of the "traditional" mother (nurturing) and the "traditional" father (providing, strength (whatever that means)) from SOMEONE (either a man or a woman), the children turn out fine.

Get real! You cannot have it both ways. First, you send out a message on Twitter to announce to the whole world your goods news. Then, within that global announcement, you dare ask for privacy. HA! Like the members of the press are going to afford them that privilege.

I also hope this match made in heaven is actually more solid than those of Rosie, Melissa, Jodie, and the list goes on and on.

Good luck to NPH. Wait.... phone is ringing. Agent says, Hey, Neil, gotta a good, lucrative deal for you and the hubby if People gets to publish your twins' photos first. Wait again... If gays "deserve" kids, how come they cannot conceive and birth them without a third party involved? How come they will never be able to experience having children that will be a manifestation of the two parents combined? I'll tell you why...it's because it's NOT NATURAL! Whatever laws may be implemented by activist judges across the country (without the approval of the voting public, even), such as in California, the laws of nature will continue to hold fast. These and all gay "parents" will continue to be mere shadows of God's intended structure of one mother and one father. It is quite selfish of such people to bring new lives into this world when they will be cheated out of a proper family structure from the beginning. Attempting to defy God and the natural order He created will only result in failure, sooner or later.

So by your logic, anything that you had to work for (that wasn't handed to you by "God") is something that you don't deserve. If you don't mind, please give me your address and leave everything you didn't acquire "naturally" in your front yard. I'll be by in a few weeks to pick it up. And don't even come back at me with "God gave me these blessings". Because I coud just as easily argue that god gave gays the blessing of surrogacy.

@Delusional Much? So what is your take on straight couples who are not able to conceive naturally? Is that "Gods" way of saying they shouldn't reproduce? That makes absolutely no sense. Many children are brought into your so so called "God intended structure" to only be left with a drunken, abusive or absent parent. Does that not result in failure as well? Manifestation of two parents, there goes adoption as well for those barren couples. As far as your laws of nature…cancer occurs in nature, but yet we have medical procedures in place to combat cancer, while yes it does often prevail…by your logic because typical western medecine is not "natural" we should leave those people to die because it is just natures course. Please, you have no logical grounds to stand on. If you believe that being gay is wrong and gay couples having children is wrong, that’s your belief and your decision to hide behind your version of faith, not everyone elses. So does us all a favor and tune out and turn off and stop reading the articles you know you wont like.

Clearly he’s fine with people knowing the news, in general. That’s quite different from the press and public having a total field day and trying to find out who the surrogate is, where the birth will be, etc.

If he HAD tried to keep it a total secret, the press most certainly would’ve gotten wind of the story and descended like vultures, as usual. But, again, rather than allow that to happen he controlled the announcement.

Get it? And maybe, in the future, think about things just a little?

I still don't really how this would relate to whether or not this would make Neil Patrick Harris a good or bad parent, or is that even the issue? Is the issue here that gay couples should or should not be allowed to parent, or that gay relationships are a carnal sin or what? I am really kind of lost in the spiral of the discussion. I do however hope that anyone that takes on the job of parenting (mother of 3) realizes what they are getting into, gay or straight. It is a hard, demanding, self-sacrificing position to be in and I wish them both all the best, as well as thier empending children. Oh yeah, Jesus ROCKS!! I fully support two loving people choosing to have children. Our world would be a much better place if children were limited to loving parents who both wanted them and could provide for their needs. Having a child for selfish reasons such as carrying on a family line or wanting the unconditional love of someone puts an undue pressure for a child to provide for the parent's needs instead of the other way round. I have seen too many unwanted, uncared for, abused, and abandoned children to be anything less than estatic about these two wanted children! Congratulations, Neil and David.
